F RO M T H E E D I TOR Another year has arrived and with it comes Showcase’s annual RAVE Awards. I’ve said this before, but each and every business represented in these awards has the many things, including quality products and services and exceptional customer service, that garner a loyal customer base. If you’re not already using their services, you should be. And if you are, thank you for taking the time to vote and tell our readers just how special these businesses truly are to our community. With 2015 here, it’s only natural to reflect on the past year. I’m sure there are things everyone wants to change. Resolutions — it’s a word that gets tossed around more than Ric Flair in his classic matches with the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes. Did you know that only eight percent of people are successful at reaching their resolutions? Fortunately for Ric Flair, he had a better winning percentage than that in the ring. I’m part of the 92 percent. I went at my resolutions full steam in 2014, but after a few weeks, I started putting things off. Procrastination became the excuse that kept giving. Will this year be any different? I hope so. The
other day I was reading Muhammad Ali’s best productivity tips. One was to make the most of the time you have. Ali once said, “The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did when he was 30 has wasted 20 years of his life.” Those words hit me stiff like an Ali jab. OK, maybe not that hard, but for dramatic effect let’s run with it.

This is nothing new, but each day, each year we waste is time we cannot get back. Time is precious and shortlived. There’s no need to mope about it now. We have been given a new day, a new year to live to the fullest. One resolution that everyone should make (and keep) is to be a better person. Volunteer this year; help out someone that could use a hand, go see Paulette at the humane society and take a dog for a walk. Expect nothing in return for you time, but know that by doing these things you’ve made someone else’s time here more enjoyable.

SHE SAID...
“Mama said, there’ll be days like this, there’ll be days like this, mama said.” This was a song made famous in the sixties by the Shirelles, a female singing group. What they didn’t warn us about was 2014; there’ll be years like this. I expect our lives to change as we get older — walking more slowly, slurred speech, having to go the bathroom more often, sleeping only three to four hours a night, etc.
Well, let me just this about all that — Thank God you have changed your pattern of whining to something different. At least you’re on the path of good health after all these years. You have been cleaned, inspected, and checked from head to toe. Instead of whining and complaining, you should be thanking God for every report you received that said you were in good health.
I have expected this all along so there was no need to panic. But this last year takes the cake. I mean how many doctors on how many days does one man have to endure? I am all for good health. I’m all for doctors getting rich so our daughters will have someone to marry, but Lord help me, one more doctor’s appointment this past year would have thrown me over the bridge. I don’t mean the bridge of troubled water either. I mean the bridge of despair. First, there was the dentist, come back for a filling, and then come back to check on a bridge (this time the bridge was between two back teeth). Then there was my annual physical — glucose too high, borderline diabetic, so come back later to check on that. And while we are at it, the doctor recommended a trip to an endocrinologist. So, here we go again. At that visit, he wanted to know when I last had a colonoscopy. I told him a few years back. When I told over 25 years ago, BAM! Grab a pole and let’s go fishing. Then there was the urologist for a regular checkup — protein is high, better watch that, and be sure to drink more water. After that, it was back to my regular doctor to show him I had improved and lost weight. He asked me how I lost 35 pounds. I said, “It’s simple. I have so many doctor appointments scheduled each day that I don’t have time to eat.
Instead of looking at the negative side of life, you have to start looking at things from the positive side. You are healthy. You don’t have diabetes. Luckily, you had a scare, but turned it around with a lifestyle change that saved you from becoming diabetic. You have lost weight. You have new clothes out of necessity. You have been giving another chance to have a new lease on life and here you are crying because some great doctors gave you some good advice, which you heeded (for a change), and now you are back to good health. I should be the one complaining because I am going to have to be the watchdog and keep you on the straight and narrow road of good health from now on. I have to make sure you walk each day, eat healthy, hide the sweets in the house, and cook the kinds of food that keep you healthy. You don’t hear me complaining, do you? The year 2014 is going to be remembered as the year WE made you lifestyle change to ensure that you and I are around together in 2015. You are most welcome.

New Year’s Resolutions or How I lost the War Again This Year
I have been looking around at the various New Year Resolutions being made by everyone in the world and I have decided that they are all just kidding themselves. I mean it sounds good on the first day of the month to make these promises, but about the third of March most of them have been forgotten and none of them have been accomplished. So this year I have decided to compare by taking a look at last year’s list and see how I have done to succeed or fail. Some of them will be true, some will have failed , but all of them will have been addressed in some form of action. First Month — Improve Self — I had good intentions to improve. Then I started thinking — how do you make a person better than who they are or what they are? So nothing changed and today I am much improved because I am the same today as yesterday. Second Month — Manage Debt — Managing debt is quite simple. You get out a piece of paper and on one side you list your debts and on the other side you list your assets or money coming in. What I found out was I had more going out than coming in. So I guess I could say I managed it by not managing it. I just left it as it was. This year I will owe the same as last year. Third Month — Get Fit — This is really easier said than done. I walked, ate less food, I exercised more, and still I don’t feel any more fit than I did last year at this time. Getting fit must be more than that for which I know, because I know I didn’t get any smaller and I don’t feel any better. Fourth Month — Take a Trip — I don’t know why people list this as part of their New Year’s resolutions. I put it down because everyone else did, I certainly had no intention of going anywhere exotic. Myrtle Beach is just about as far south as I care to go and New York is too expensive and too crowded. Fifth Month — Save Money — This one I did by not taking a trip. So if I accomplished anything I guess this was the one was it. As far as sticking more money in my saving account I don’t remember the last time I saved a dime. You can’t save money when all your money goes to food and women. The idea of saving money is a good idea though. Sixth Month — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — These could be called the three R’s. I agree in principle that we all should strive to make a difference in the world. I say reduce the rent, reuse the paper by typing on the backside, and recycle your clothes, by handing them down to your brother. I didn’t do all of those things but I do think it makes good sense. Seventh Month— More Family Time — I am afraid that if I spend any more time with my family they will get on my nerves or I will get on theirs. Having said
16 SHOWCASE Magazine
| JANUARY 2014 | www.showcasemagazine.com
that, I am all for the family going bowling together or playing sports together, but all that just sitting around talking and stuff gets on my last nerve. I say spend more family time doing what each family member likes to do individually, and then everyone is happy with family time. I know that is what I did. Eight Month — Enjoy Life More — Why do people want to enjoy life more and what can you do to enjoy life more? If you don’t have the inclination to travel or the money then you can’t enjoy that, if you don’t make friends easily or you have no personality how can you enjoy life more? You can’t, so just keep on being selfish and alone…works for me. Ninth Month — Get A Better Job — Easier said than done. You just don’t walk out of your house and get a new job. So why is this one so popular and on everyone’s list? Does everyone need a new job; is everyone unhappy in their present job? I say if you got a job hang on to it. New jobs don’t come around every year when you are making your New Year’s resolutions. Tenth Month — Help Others — Now this one I can see everyone doing because it doesn’t take very much effort to be kind to others or give a friend a helping hand. I don’t always see it on everyone’s list because most people think they are already doing everything that they can to help others. I tried to help others this year but it didn’t always help. Some people don’t want help. So be it. Eleventh Month — Quit Smoking — Lucky for me I quit smoking over forty years ago, but with someone who still has the habit, I could see this one being on someone’s radar. I enjoyed smoking but after seeing some of my friends dying of lung cancer, I am surely glad this is one resolution that I kept many years ago. I put it on my list each year as a reminder that I can keep some resolutions. Twelfth Month — Lose Weight — This one is on everyone’s list year after year, but yet we have an obesity problem in this country. I would say that most people start out good, maybe the first day, but soon after get back into their old habits or eating too much and not exercising. I, on the other hand, did lose weight this year which means I accomplished about two out of the twelve resolutions. So there you have it, my take on resolutions and what they mean, why they don’t work, and what you can do about it. I guess by going back to the previous year to see if I kept my promises on my own resolutions I already knew the answer, so there is no need to embarrass myself again this year by making new ones. Happy New Year to all of you late bloomers, fast starters, and all of my procrastinating friends.

A Better You
A Better You in a New Year By Fitness Trainer, Speaker, & Writer Dave Gluhareff:
It’s the New Year! It’s time for a fresh start and positive change. This new beginning should be about healthy growth. This is the time that people are motivated to succeed. Many attempt to quit smoking, cleanup their financial messes, and to resolve to get healthier, emotionally and physically. These fresh starts are built on good intentions… yet many people get frustrated when they cannot seem to succeed. It’s easy to get discouraged if there isn’t a realistic goal.
Pete Jones Photography
Set your goal, get structured, make a plan (Blueprint), and ask for support and accountability from a professional or even a friend or family member. Most importantly this New Year, please Never Give-up! You Got This!
Dave Gluhareff Suzanne Stowe
In the late 1990s David Gluhareff lost over 100 pounds. Dave then became a certified personal trainer with the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and began his career as a personal trainer. In June of 2009 David earned the elite status of Master of Fitness Sciences (MFS) by the ISSA, their highest level of personal training qualifications. As a personal trainer, Dave has been helping people take charge of their physiques to help them feel, look, and move better through life. Visit www. VirginiaBootcamp. com for more information.
18 SHOWCASE Magazine
One would think that the first week of January is the busiest time for a personal trainer. Honestly, it’s not. A few weeks into the new year is when I start to see people who have become discouraged with their goals. If you combine an unrealistic goal with no structured plan, you cannot be successful. It’s also easy to become discouraged when results aren’t immediate. Positive change requires hard work and time. You must be in it for the long haul. Following my free Fitness Blueprint at http://trainwithdave.com/nutrition/nutritionplan is a good way to kick start your race to good health. This Blueprint is easy, convenient, practices moderation, includes healthy and clean eating, and I recommend taking out some of your TV or Internet surfing time and replacing it with the 3-4 hours per week of exercise (Resistance Training, Cardio, & Stretching) time.
Make Yourself Uncomfortable! From Professional Fitness Trainer and Writer Suzanne Stowe:
Sometimes life requires us to be in uncomfortable circumstances. It is okay to be uncomfortable. Rather than trying to adjust the circumstances to make it easier on yourself, allow your own perspective and attitude to change and adjust to the situation in front of you. Be open to new personal growth and possibilities. One year we spent the Easter holiday in Wilmington. While we were there we attended a Sunday Easter service at a small beach church. We

got there slightly late and it was packed. As we walked in the usher smiled warmly and confidently began to lead us to a seat. I thought it would be a seat at the back, far side, or even a few folding chairs. As we followed, we walked closer to the front of the sanctuary. The usher stopped and politely gestured toward the ornate wooden chairs on the stage area. My heart skipped a beat as I stepped up onto the platform along with my six children and turned facing the congregation. Are my children going to stay in their seats? Are they all wearing shoes? What is about to happen during the next hour? It was a potentially humorous situation and I was very uncomfortable. But it was okay. When meeting health and fitness goals, we are also required to be in uncomfortable positions. In weight training you push through the last few repetitions even though it feels as if the weight cannot be lifted anymore, and we gain strength and endurance. In Yoga practice, you find yourself in a difficult pose, but you hold it for the moment, and you gain patience and confidence. It is okay to be uncomfortable in these situations. We know if we challenge ourselves and do not quit, the moment will pass, and then we will transition to the next required challenge, stronger and healthier, even though it took much effort. Begin 2015 by challenging yourself to step outside your comfort zone. Make decisions that demand focus but lead to healthier outcomes in all areas of your life. Ride your bike to work rather than drive. Walk during your lunch break. Choose the healthier food options. Exercise when you feel stressed. Choose to be calm when you feel overwhelmed. Say something kind when you feel the most annoyed. Let yourself laugh out loud. In this New Year, step up, turn to face your fear, embrace that uncomfortable moment, and reach unexpected, healthier outcomes. It is going to be okay. “Put off your old self… and be made new in the attitude of your minds”. Ephesians 4:22, 23.

A New Year of Experiences
feature
by Jennifer Doss Photos courtesy of Martinsville Henry Country Tourism
There’s something truly special about the New Year. In reality, January 1 is not much different than the previous day but the annual changing of years gives us all an opportunity to, in theory, hit the reset buttons on our lives. We start each new year with excitement, full of redefined perspectives, new goals, and fresh outlooks on life. Whether your goal is to learn a new skill, to meet new people or enhance your health, our community offers an abundance of resources designed to educate, connect, empower, and strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. In 2015, challenge yourself to seize each day taking full advantage of the opportunities around you. One of the most common New Year resolutions that I hear revolves around health and fitness. Losing weight, getting in better shape or training for an event are among the list. A variety of opportunities are available locally to accomplish these goals and more.

Yoga & Chi Gong classes, an oriental style of meditative movement, is just one of the new offerings provided by instructor Bob Tuggle at the Spencer-Penn Centre in Spencer this month. The classes feature exercises with gentle, owing movements that relax and tone the body. Line Dance Lessons with Sue Ann Ehmann at the Center is another fun and creative way to burn off those holiday calories. An instructor at the annual Virginia Line Dance Festival in Richmond, Sue Ann will instruct participants to a variety of music including Oldies, Country, Pop, Show Tunes, Top 40, and Disco. Register for both of these classes by calling 276.957.5757. For those wishing to finish a 5K or half-marathon, there is a wonderful training group offered by the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA. As a past participant of this empowering program, it was a delight to meet runners from all over the region. Each with their own personal goal in mind, first time runners, reluctant runners and experienced runners formed a tight bond as they traded training tips and gave each other encouragement and comradery throughout the program. Once the training program is complete, participants are ready to take on the Martinsville Half-Marathon, Relay & 5K in March. Call 276.632.1772 for additional information. Taking time out to learn a new skill is another common resolution. Painting, wood turning,
pottery and stained glass are just a few of the many art classes offered by The Artisan Center in Uptown Martinsville. For those interested in technology, the same facility offers classes in the Fab Lab where participants can use a variety of equipment, including 3D printers to fabricate products and works of art to make their dreams a reality. During The Artisan Center’s Maker Monday sessions, the public is invited to use Fab Lab equipment to fabricate items ranging from edible chocolate designs to clothing and even custom jewelry. Call 276.632.0066 for additional information. To expand your horizons and learn more about arts and culture, Piedmont Arts hosts monthly Art @ Lunch and Art @ Happy Hour programs. At each event, participants are invited to come by during their lunch hour or drop by after work for drinks to discover more about the current exhibits and various topics on art. Regional artists and local experts are on hand at each event to lead discussion and explain the works seen. While at the gallery, guests will also be amazed at the skill and artistry on display this month through the current exhibits of The Art of the Quilt and Mobilizing Our Community. Call 276.632.3221 for additional information. One of the most powerful impacts in life is the human connection. Surrounding yourself with
positive people is a surefire way to bring a smile to your face and building social capitol with those relationships can also open doors. Quarterly throughout the year The Newcomer’s Network is hosted at the Martinsville-Henry County Visitor Center in Uptown Martinsville. This event is an opportunity to meet others that are new to the area as well as longtime residents that want to share their love for Southern Virginia. The group will meet this winter on January 13 at 5:30 pm. Call 276.632.8006 for more information. No matter what your goals are for 2015, there are activities, organizations and people throughout the community that can help you get going. Take advantage of the resources around you and have a wonderful new year! For information on these and other events, check out the community calendar at www.VisitMartinsville.com.

by Paulette Dean Executive Director, Danville Humane Society
A small group of citizens in Danville and Pittsylvania County met in 1975 and formed the Danville-Pittsylvania Humane Society. A
mission statement was written: Our purpose is to promote the welfare and humane treatment of all animals: mammals, fowl, reptiles, and ďŹ sh; to prevent cruelty and promote kindness, respect, and reverence for all forms of life; and to this end, provide for the rescue and temporary maintenance of lost, strayed, abandoned animals; disseminate the principles of humaneness through educational programs and through these efforts contribute to the creation of a truly humane society. The name was changed to the Danville Area Humane Society a few years later, and throughout that time, other statements have been added to the mission statement, including our goals of finding homes for as many as possible, investigating acts of cruelty and neglect, and promoting spaying and neutering. In 1984, we took over operation of the City of Danville animal shelter. We have seen four expansions of that facility, and have expanded all of our services. Each expansion and change has been made with the animals’ best interest in mind. We celebrate our 40th year of service to the animals in 2015. The years have seen many employees, donors, and volunteers contribute their time, talents, and possessions to help us help the animals. We appreciate each minute and every cent that has been contributed. To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we will continue our successful transfer program. We will offer many options to help spay and neuter as many dogs and cats as we possibly can, and we will answer the calls to help animals in need. In other words, we will strive every day to honor our mission statement. It is a joy to serve the wonderful creatures with which we share this earth. SM

Welcome to my world. Maybe you’ll find something entertaining, or maybe you’ll find something to relate to. Maybe you’ll find both. Sometimes this page won’t even make sense to you. Sometimes it won’t apply to you. And sometimes you’ll think I stalked you and wrote a story about what I saw. My world consists of five children, two dogs, two cats, and a husband. Jason is 22, Corey is 14, Spencer is 13, Tucker is 12, and Kendall is 11. Scott, my husband of three years, is still trying to figure us all out. Every day is a winding road.
and made a pretty good confidant for the teenage son who tried diligently to fit into his new life.
Happy 2015! Here’s to Clean Slates, New Beginnings, and Positivity In June 2006, without a dollar to her name, she left her husband. Their marriage had been crumbling for years even though they loved each other very much. With five children in tow, she packed their things and headed to her hometown. She slept on her mother’s couch, with children sleeping all around her. For a week, it was unclear their fate. But then, an old friend caught wind of her troubles. He offered her a job and a house she could rent from him. Her prayers were answered. Settling into their new lives inevitably took years, but at the time, they were doing as well as could be expected. Her friend helped as much as he could, but when she cried from loneliness, questioning her entire decision of leaving her husband, he could only offer a shoulder. He let her cry and work out her own fears and expectations. He tried his best to be sincere and thoughtful, but just being a phone call away and listening to her tears were better than nothing. He became her best friend. Months passed, and whenever he came around it was a pleasant encounter. He was somewhat in tuned with the children by then,

She went on with her life as best as she could. She made new friends and was becoming comfortable with the choices she had made. And one day, her friend gave her a hug that she didn’t want to let go of. He just smiled and said good-bye nonchalantly, unknowing of the spark she felt. A year had passed since her big moved. Was she feeling something more for this friend? Was he? She didn’t want to risk their friendship but her feelings just wouldn’t go away. He soon became all she thought about. She asked him to lunch, consulted him on work projects, had him ‘fix’ things at her house…whatever she could find for him to do with her, she made happen! Finally, about six months later, it happened. Their eyes met and they both knew what the other was thinking, but they still didn’t communicate it out loud. They were afraid if they spoke it, it would be ruined. But she couldn’t contain it anymore. She wanted him to know exactly how she felt. She wanted to make a life with him. She wanted him to love her the way she thought she loved him. She did what any silly girl in love does — she wrote him a letter. Later that evening, he responded with a text message that suggested they discuss it the next day. She was so intrigued
that she began texting him back right then. She didn’t want to wait to talk about it. She wanted it discussed right then, even if it were over texts. He eventually called her. They talked all night. He revealed that he’d loved her the whole time. She had no idea. She felt like the most special girl in the world. The very next day that she saw him, he kissed her. She was certain of her love for him. It was the most comfortable feeling in the world. In that moment, she knew she was protected. He had her. She was his. A year and a half later, she moved in with him. The children were as happy as could be. They felt secure with him and knew he had their best interest at heart. She knew that was where she wanted to be forever. In November 2010, he presented her with a beautiful engagement ring. She said yes. They were married at their home surrounded by close friends and relatives on January 1, 2011. -The End To Scott: With each January, our lives are filled with more love, more happiness, and more security. I can’t think of a better New Year’s Resolution year after year than proclaiming our love, and vowing to bring true happiness to our home. Happy Anniversary! I can’t imagine my life without. I love you so much. Love, Misty SM
