FRO M T H E E D I TO R I took a moment and stared at the blank page before typing. A clean canvas that is eagerly waiting for words which come to mind. In a way, this scene is no different than welcoming a new year. It’s the annual “do over,” a fresh start to correct the mistakes or to build on the success of the previous year. But before hitting the reset button and listing the resolutions that you hope to accomplish in 2013, take a moment to map out a plan of action. Sure, I know you want to lose the fifteen pounds you gained last year because you didn’t stick to your 2012 resolution. And that’s fine, write it down, “I will get in better shape,” but if you don’t figure out why you didn’t succeed at whatever goal you made last year, you’re doomed to repeat the process. Life isn’t built for reverse, it’s full speed ahead, leave the past hiccups in the rearview mirror.
yourself, the rest will fall in place. You will want to take better care of your body. You’ll have the confidence it takes to write the words “The End” to that story that has been written in your mind for years. You’ll realize you have the talent to record the song you sing in the shower every morning. And so on. Change starts within you, don’t wait on anyone else.
Sounds good, right? But where do you start? Your first and most important resolution should be to make yourself happy. If you feel good about

Bill Strickland Tuesday, February 26, 2013 6:30 PM (IALR)
As a disadvantaged youth, Bill Strickland followed his dreams, never taking no for an answer in their pursuit. The MacArthur “Genius” Award recipient works with Manchester-Bidwell, a Pittsburgh-based organization focusing upon career training and youth arts education programs. The Dan River Region is similar to Bill’s hometown of Pittsburgh - we lost tobacco and textile industries, while Pittsburgh saw a significant portion of its steel industry leave its city. Bill is a natural fit to speak to our many residents who are thinking about or going through the job retraining process, as his organization retrained many of these displaced steel workers. At ManchesterBidwell, Bill has also developed youth arts education programs. Many of the students have gone on to professional careers in the arts. He believes that creativity spurs positive growth, both in one’s personal and professional lives. In addition, Bill will speak with locals going through or exploring workforce development training at a time and location to be determined. Bill Strickland will also talk with students on the subjects of the arts as trade or career and how creativity can benefit all aspects of one’s life.

SHE SAID...
As I sat around contemplating my New I think that the first sentence is frightening. Year’s resolutions, I got to thinking... I am You sat down to think. old and I never have kept a resolution in my life, so why am I wasting time and Only you could take something so positive paper to put something down that is like New Year’s resolutions and turn them never going to happen? It then occurred into a negative as long as it’s something to me that I have been looking at these realistically that you WANT to do. These dreaded resolutions in the wrong way. I subliminal suggestions serve only one need to have a more positive outlook. I purpose...to make you happy. realize that the problem is my thinking negatively about resolutions in general. Do you have any idea why we make I just need to write down ONLY those PHOTO BY MICHELLE DALTON PHOTOGRAPHY resolutions? We do that to improve our lives silly promises that I know I can keep, that way next year I can say that I made or the lives of people around us. As usual New Year’s resolutions and I’LL BE THE ONLY PERSON YOU you start in about things you want or things you think you KNOW WHO WAS ABLE TO KEEP THEM! So here are my should do that won’t tax your time or make you exert energy. New Year’s resolutions for 2013: You may not need a new car, but you certainly could shovel 1. To gain at least 30 pounds. That is not unreasonable and should be attainable if I work hard at it. 2. Not to buy a new car. This one is going to be harder, because I like the smell of a new car even though I do not need one. 3. Not to be so friendly. You always say that the girls at the counters in stores think I am flirting with them, when I am only trying to be nice. I will try harder not to be so nice. 4. Try and Kiss our Baby More (Sophie the poodle). I know she doesn’t get much attention. I will try harder to shower her with human affection, although I think she would rather have more dog treats or go for a walk more often. 5. Post on Facebook more often. Right now I am only posting one or two times a day. I know I can think of more profound things than that to say several times a day. I think I should be able to honor all of these pledges and then next year you will be so proud of me because I was able to keep my New Year’s resolutions for 2013. Hope you have a Happy New Year watching me eat everything you WISH you could eat.
out some of the “stuff” that has been in there for years just in case someone (me) wants to ride with you. About Facebook... social media gets more attention from you than your whole family combined. It’s the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do before going to bed. I bet you even get up in the middle of the night in case you forgot to post something or to check to see if you missed someone else’s post. Without pencil and paper I can come up with at least a hundred new resolutions that you could attempt. However, as you said you have never followed them, so it’s useless for me or any of your friends to make suggestions. I can tell you that your car could be better organized, you could help me keep the house clean, and you could empty the garbage every once in a while or help with the yard work, but I won’t tell you that. I hope that someday you might learn to figure it out for yourself. But I guess that I would just be putting my New Year’s hopes into your resolutions and I know how much you would resent that. So new or old, I still wish you all the joys in the new year. Maybe that word should have been “toys” instead of “joys,” the way you like to collect things.

Earn More Income by Systematizing
financial
The only thing most industries have ever gotten right is that promotion is nothing but a numbers game. The difference between what they have taught us, and what works, is the game must be played intelligently by only reaching people who are interested and qualified. In order to talk to these high quality prospects on a regular and dependable basis, you must have a system in place. And, the system must run your business, while you run the system. The only difference between companies who gross six, or even seven figures and everyone else is that they have a system in place that is better than the competition. Anyone can have a giant income, as long as you are willing to implement the necessary system to make a huge bottomline difference in growth. What type of system is best for your business? The dictionary states a system is defined as “a series of actions, procedures or motions designed to be the means to accomplish an end. If you are real honest with yourself, you will discover that you really do not have everything systematized.

Money management tips, small business strategies and a variety of other financial concepts. Facts and information contained is not intended to provide specific legal, financial or tax advice, or any other advice for any individual or company and should not be relied upon in that regard.
This creates a lot of fear using energy in negative and wasteful ways. Fear comes from not knowing what lies ahead. Fear kills success. However, since fear comes from not knowing what lies ahead, and systematizing makes sure that you do know what is in front of you, it is simple to stop the fear. The key is to establish systems for everything you do. It is impossible to grow anything of lasting value without a system. It simply is not possible. For example, if everything you do is individually handled and actions you take are based on putting out fires, you do not have a chance of growing a dependable business. Realistically speaking, predictability and dependability is the central core of a person with peace of mind and lots of steady income. Once you get the hang of what is going on, you can shake the fear. Once you shake the fear, you can feel relaxed and excited. Once you feel relaxed and excited, you will attract more customers through your system, as opposed to the business running you. So, how can you define and set up your own system?
14 SHOWCASE Magazine
| JANUARY 2013 | www.showcasemagazine.com
Systematizing sounds so overwhelming and difficult to most business owners. The first thing to understand is that simple systems are the best. There are many systematized things to consider that require nothing more than writing down the process on a piece of paper and referring to it when in doubt. You do not have to overwhelm yourself thinking that you have this monumental, impossible job of systematizing your business. Instead, you will be much better served by thinking of things in small chunks, and doing a little bit at a time. A complete system is made of a series of smaller processes. Each process must work by itself, but yet fit into the entire process. Any process, no matter how small, must be systematized in order for your business to grow. Writing everything down is critical. You cannot have systems for some things and none for other processes that fit into your theme. If you do, you are sure to have problems. You cannot systematize certain aspects of the system. Everything must be included. In order for any system to be useful, you must start with the end in mind and work backwards. Defining the end result, very specifically, will allow you to have the basis for building the system. If you keep the end result in mind at the beginning, you can then develop the steps in the process to make the end result become an end result. You do not have to burden yourself with a scary thought of designing systems from the beginning. It does not work and is too much effort to be successful. For example, let’s say that a simple thing like answering the phone needs to be systematized into a process. Why answering the phone? Because this is a simple procedure that anyone can handle. This sounds easy; however, it is not to some people. Answering the phone has many facets that must be put into an organized series of steps to make sure it is done right every time. Every time is the key here. The purpose of a system is to make sure that each and every time a process gets done, it is done the same way every time regardless of who is actually doing it. As you work your ideas for your system backwards, you must make sure you see how each step will be a systematized process. SM

Afton: Younger Days

Afton originated as an outlet for the songs of singer-songwriter Mike Ketchum, who was looking for musicians to record an album of original material. Ketchum grew up in Pelham, North Carolina and started playing guitar at age 12.

Drummer Bob Campbell met Ketchum through some fellow musicians. They rehearsed a few of his songs and played once in Ballou Park with a forgotten keyboard player and bassist. Ketchum was on guitar and vocals,

with Campbell and a second drummer whose tenure with the band was brief. That line-up was short-lived and Ketchum asked Campbell to come up with a band for an album. He contacted guitarist Dane Williams, bassist Donnie Hughes, and keyboardists Jeff Baldwin and Jimmy Dooley, who also played sax and guitar. Campbell and Dooley grew up in the same neighborhood and Campbell had worked with the others in the bands Star and Leevi Whizz. The new line-up rehearsed at the Episcopal Church on Main Street, where Campbell’s dad was a member. Reverend Doug Girardeau liked the band and gave them free rein to practice on the church stage at night, leaving their equipment set up behind the curtains. The band arranged and rehearsed Ketchum’s songs for the
next two months, with plans for a marathon recording session at Major Recording Studios in Waynesboro,Virginia. Ketchum booked the studio for a day and the band drove to Waynesboro a few days early, living in a rustic log cabin where they “practiced and partied,” living off cases of Busch Natural Light until it was time to commit Mike’s songs to vinyl. “The First Day of Summer” was recorded on June 21, 1977, hence the name. The entire LP was completed in eight hours, although Ketchum returned the following week to mix the tapes with the engineer. In the interim, the studio managed to “lose” a guitar track from the title song; Williams had overdubbed a second lead during the original sessions. Most of the numbers were completed in a single take. Hughes said the band had rehearsed the songs to the point that “it was pretty much second nature” by the time they entered the studio. While in Waynesboro, they ate at the local Pizza Hut, including their waitress among those thanked in the liner notes on the album jacket. The album was privately pressed on Lark Records and distributed by the group. Hughes recalls doing a number of college gigs and radio interviews to promote the LP. Copies were sent to major labels and he says the album was “almost picked up by Mercury/Nashville.” Campbell remembers another near miss with Capricorn Records, whose roster included Southern rockers the Allman Brothers Band and Wet Willie. Band members
traveled to Macon, Georgia to meet with label executives. Unfortunately, it was the week that Capricorn folded. The group ended up at a bar in town. Williams and Ketchum knew the house band and Afton jammed with the group before heading home the next day. Sandra Hughes had a popular day-time talk show on WFMY TV 2 in Greensboro and featured a segment on Afton. The band was interviewed and lip- synced two songs from the album. Donnie Hughes recalls another interview on WHLF radio in South Boston. The band thought the segment was being taped for a later broadcast and let a few choice words fly before realizing they were live on the air. Back in Danville, Ketchum visited a Stereo Village store and asked manager Larry Oldham to sell the album on consignment. Oldham liked what he heard and offered to help the band. He was no stranger to the recording industry, having worked for Capitol Records. Oldham also had his own independent label, Lancer Records, and was registered with BMI as a publisher and songwriter. That association led to the group’s second (and final) release, the 45 Cowboy Song/Come Back Babe, which was recorded in 1978. Between the sessions, bassist Donnie Hughes left the band in a disagreement with Campbell, reportedly over 10 dollars. He moved to Rhode Island and joined the band Damien, with Bill Brown taking over on bass. Oldham made arrangements for Afton to record at Lazy Moon Productions, a small

He financed and produced the sessions, which took place on a weekend since all of the members had day jobs. He explained his dilemma and the owner agreed to record the band on a Sunday, if Oldham paid for five hours of studio time. The sessions ended up taking longer, with Afton recording three songs instead of two. Oldham assisted on the sound boards, as most of the engineer’s experience was with gospel and bluegrass bands. Two songs were selected for the single, while a third penned by Williams remains unreleased. Continued to page 42

Afton Continued from page 39 The sessions were held on Sunday, August 6, 1978. It was Brown’s first time in the studio and he was nervous. While he had no trouble laying down the bass tracks, Brown was of no use as a backing vocalist because he had been up the night before celebrating the birth of his son, Robert. Campbell remains unimpressed with the recording of “Cowboy Song” that was chosen for release, insisting that a demo recorded earlier by the band rips the official version to shreds. The drummer penned the single’s B-side, “Come Back Babe,” with an edited version appearing on the single. The 45 was released in 1979 to little fanfare, although it did receive heavy airplay on Danville’s Top 40 station, WYPR, which was managed by Campbell’s father. The drummer also had an air shift on the station. The single came with elaborate packaging and included a double-sided picture sleeve with photos by acclaimed photographer Frank Van Valkenburg, along with inserts of sheet music for both songs. Ketchum later brought Oldham several demo tapes of songs he had written, including a catchy melody about Riverside Drive, dances at the Coke plant, and life at the Goodyear plant. The song was never released, although Oldham says it would have been the follow-up single, had Afton stayed together. A live recording from February 1978 features a mix of original songs from the album and covers of songs by Manassas, Bob Seger, and Chuck Berry. The band is tight and comfortable on stage. It helped that they were playing a familiar venue. The Black
Horse Cellar was a small nightclub nestled in the basement of Danville’s Downtowner Motor Inn, which also housed the radio station where Campbell worked his day job. The house was packed for Afton’s performance, and the folding walls in the banquet hall were opened to accommodate the overflow crowd. A video of the band was taped for a local March of Dimes telethon. Recorded in a church basement, the band performed a set of mostly original material, including “Carolina Woman” and a second song never recorded in a studio setting. Campbell remembers that the band used flash pods and smoke for visual effect. As they were playing in the basement, the smoke lingered and slowly sank down, with the band disappearing in the cloud. Afton continued performing, juggling gigs between members work schedules. Their final performance was an outdoor concert in Milton, North Carolina, near Virginia International Raceway. Their set was tight Southern rock and included a few new songs that were only performed on this occasion. Afton split shortly thereafter, as members moved on to find jobs, join other bands, or attend college. While several in Afton still play in weekend bands, Dane Williams is the only surviving member who still makes his living with his music. Williams also teaches and holds a master’s degree. He lives in Baltimore and has performed with the band Powerhouse.
Ketchum moved and married, settling in Luray,Virginia, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was here that he returned to his Bluegrass roots, performing for 20 years with artists like Tony Rice, Brad Corbin, Del McCoury, Doc Watson, Ron and Don Rigsby, and Bill Yeatts of The Country Gentlemen. He also opened his own studio, Blue Ridge Recording. The label would serve as an outlet for his own band,Virginia Run, and for other artists like the Church Sisters. He also managed the Master Shield label, regularly attending International Bluegrass Music Association and Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America showcases, searching for new talent. He was also instrumental in getting Canadian artists the Abrams Brothers into the mainstream. Ketchum remained active in the music business until he died of lung cancer on May 30, 2010. He was just 57. Oldham describes Ketchum as jovial, tenacious, and talented. “He knew what he wanted and he was good,” says Oldham. In need of a guitar but with no money to buy one, Oldham purchased a Gibson Les Paul for Ketchum, but says he believes Ketchum “would have paid me to record him.” Brown concurs, remembering Ketchum as “a great writer (who) wrote about things that went on in everyday life.” He still plays today but remembers his work with Afton as the best of times adding, “I still miss Mike.” While there has been talk of an Afton reunion, all agree that the magic would be missing without Ketchum fronting the band. THE TOP VOTE GETTERS Stephen G. Bass and Stacy Allocca of Carter Craig Attorneys at Law
Every year Showcase Magazine asks you, our readers, to tell us and the community who you feel are your Favorites in area. The categories vary and the choices are numerous, but it seems each time around we receive an overwhelming number of responses and at the end of counting your voice is always heard. While you can find the full results starting on page 15, here we want to highlight the specific category that received the most votes, Favorite Attorney. Winning the 2013 RAVE Award for Favorite Attorney is Stephen Bass. Steve works at Carter Craig Attorneys at Law, and was born and raised in Danville. Steve’s father was also a Danville attorney who had practiced in Danville for more than 40 years. During Steve’s summers in high school he worked in the Masonic Temple for his father while his father’s secretary took vacation, but Steve’s goal wasn’t to become an attorney. After high school Steve attended college at the University of Virginia where he received 46 SHOWCASE Magazine
| JANUARY 2013 | www.showcasemagazine.com
his undergraduate degree in Government, and attended law school. Like many people who leave home and head to college he had not intended to return to Danville. Two months before his graduation from law school his father passed away. After graduation and passing the Virginia Bar Exam, Steve approached Charles Carter, an attorney who knew Steve’s father, and was offered a position with Mr. Carter’s firm. Carter Craig, Attorneys at Law is the successor to that practice. Steve met his wife, Wanda, who was a registered nurse serving as patient education coordinator and enterostomal therapist at Danville Memorial Hospital. They married in 1980, and have three children and two grandchildren. Steve has been active in community activities since returning to Danville. He has served as President of the Rotary Club, the Danville YMCA, and the Danville Area Association for the Arts and Humanities, Chairperson of the Sacred Heart School Board, a board member of the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority for 12
years, and currently serves on the Board of the Boys and Girl Clubs of the Danville Area, of which he’s been a member for over 10 years.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• A short distance in votes behind Mr. Bass and thus becoming your Other Favorite Lawyer is Stacy Allocca. Stacy also works at Carter Craig Attorneys at Law and is a great asset to their team. Originally from Long Island, New York, Stacy and her family moved to Danville when she was eight. Stacy’s passion for law came at an early age when she was supposed to testify. After meeting with the Judge in Chambers the Judge decided that she didn’t need to testify, but her love for law was created through that opportunity. As Stacy grew older she moved back to New York and attended graduate school. It was her overall goal to stay in New York when she had passed the New York State Bar Exam. As it turned out she would be called to return home to Danville after her mother became sick. She then began to work at a local firm in the area, and was given opportunities to work in the courtroom, which would have taken her years to get to in New York. “I don’t think I would have ever gotten the experience I have living here, if I would have stayed in New York. In bigger cities and larger firms it would have taken years to ever see the courtroom,” said Stacy.

Opportunity knocked again and Stacy decided to move to Carter Craig Attorneys at Law. When asked about her job she stated, “People are intimidated when you say the word lawyer. To me practicing law isn’t a job, it’s a lifestyle. I love working here because of the staff. The staff is phenomenal! Sometimes you get too many women in one place and it can be a bit catty, but that isn’t the way it here at all. It’s one big family. The staff and the attorneys are very professional and yet warm. Mr. Bass and Mr. Blair are great to work with and work for.” Stacy is an active member of the area. She is on the board at the House of Hope. Stacy teaches Sunday School to second graders and also teaches the para-legal program at DCC. She just finished a rotation as the President of the Danville Bar Association. SM

by Paulette Dean Executive Director, Danville Humane Society
When adults in my childhood would tell me that time passes by so quickly as you get older, I probably rolled my eyes. Guess what? They were telling the truth. It is so hard to
believe that 2013 is here now. 2012 certainly was a busy year; no wonder it went by so quickly. In April, we moved into our new adoption center, and expanded our transfer program around that same time. As a result, our euthanasia rate for dogs has decreased substantially. When you consider that a high percentage of dogs that come to us have significant medical or behavioral issues, we do not have to euthanize adoptable dogs any more just because of space. That is a huge achievement for us. Cats, however, are a different matter. We received over 3,000 cats in 2012! In 2012, we gave area veterinary clinics grants for spay/neuter surgeries, and also brought back the popular $25 rebate program for residents of Danville and Pittsylvania County. This means that, for the last year, we remained aggressive in our spay/neuter efforts, realizing that even doubling adoption rates cannot be effective in ending over-population issues. We investigated or helped to prosecute many cases of neglect and cruelty. It seems that just when we think we have seen the worst abuse we could possibly see, we are proven wrong. Frankly, until there are no more abused, neglected, or unwanted animals, we do not want our shelter to be empty. We want to make the world a better place for the animals. That is our primary goal for the New Year.
Angel
We named this tortoiseshell cat Angel because of the way the white hair outlining her ears creates the illusion of a heavenly glow. Unfortunately, her right leg was injured and we had it amputated. She’s doing very well; she’s sweet and energetic.

God has given you one face, and you make yourself another
mystified
by Misty Brooks Photograph by Kendall Cook
Month to month you will find Misty stating the outrageous or ridiculous truths in her day-to-day life, and you will realize that you are not alone in this maniacal concept known as parenting. Yes, welcome to 5150 Lunatic Lane- Where skills and tactics are tried, tested, and often fail. But she keeps doing it anyway! Misty’s children Jason- 20, Corey-12, Spencer-11, Tucker-10, and Kendall-9 know all too well the joy and sorrow of being a big family. And new husband Scott is still waiting for the punch line.
God has given you one face, and you make yourself another. ~William Shakespeare
I’ve cleaned the entire house. (And when I say entire, I really mean half.) The laundry is mostly caught up. The kids are in bed. Scott’s on the couch catching up on some DVR’d Pawn Stars and American Pickers. Now, I’m just sitting here trying not to make up a song to the rhythm of the dishwasher. I may as well head upstairs and start my nightly ritual. As much as I love bedtime, I also dread it. If I could just go to bed at bedtime life would be so much easier. But no.
I can get started on the fun stuff...not.
And then there’s the rosacea medicine I apply twice a day. I’ve had acne rosacea since 2000 and let me tell you it ain’t pretty! Acne rosacea is a skin disorder that affects the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. Small red blood vessels are visible; top that off with some acne and you’ve got yourself a crummy day! I started taking an antibiotic a few months ago to treat the acne but it made me sick everyday so I stopped taking it. Then I started putting Neosporin on the acne and it seemed to keep things calm.
Sleeping in make-up is taboo! So every night I wash my face. And then the application of several layers of lotions, creams, and medicine begins.
But then...my mom bought me some Retinol cream for Christmas. While I know Retinol is said to help with wrinkles, I doubt this cream
First I have to make sure I haven’t left anything in the washing machine or the dryer. And I usually have, so I fold what’s in the dryer and transfer what’s in the washer. Now I’m looking forward to at least 52 more minutes of awake-ness!

Last summer I developed melasma on my face. Melasma is the term for “the mask of pregnancy”. Ha-as if!! It’s darkened skin often associated with female hormones. (In case you are grasping for something that’s not really there, let me clarify...I’m not pregnant.) Every night I apply a powder and then a cream to the affected area- over my upper lip! It looks sort of like a mustache. It’s quite embarrassing. The worst part is that I can’t wax my actual mustache...because wax is hot, and heat makes it flare up. So when you see me tweezing at a stop light just look away.

really combats wrinkles (I just don’t believe in wrinkles creams). But the Vitamin A in it cleared up my acne in 2 days and has decreased the redness. So I’m very excited! Now it’s FINALLY time to pull on my comfy sweatpants, and my Triangle Cycles t-shirt and crawl into bed. As soon as I get on my laptop to catch up on all the social media news, Scott crawls into bed right behind me. He playfully makes a comment about having to see motorcycles (on my shirt) again before he falls asleep. Before I can think of something witty to say back I remember the clothes in the dryer and go tend to them. On my way back to bed I figured I would put on something he hasn’t seen in a while... in response to his motorcycle comment. I stopped off at the closet and changed. I smiled at him as I got into bed, but he’d fallen asleep. I’ll have to save these pink, cotton pants with white polka dots, and a lime green t-shirt from Corey’s fifth grade field trip to DC for tomorrow night. Happy Anniversary Scott! SM
