F RO M THE e d ito r Growing up, one of my favorite things was World Championship Wrestling on TBS. This was long before the Monday Night Wars between WCW and WWF. I’m talking about the mid-eighties when Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair dazzled the small audience with promos that are still remembered today. At some point, wrestling stopped becoming one of my favorite things. I tend to “find” a lot of favorite things and eventually there just isn’t room for anything else, so I have to edit the list. Wrestling fell off the list after the Monday Night Wars. At the end of each year, people make lists of their favorite things for that year — favorite movie, song, book, record, the list goes one. For me, these lists are incredibly hard unless I have something that stands head and shoulders above the rest. I never make year-end lists and then I regret it. One thing that isn’t hard to label a favorite is an experience with a business and individual. Going that one extra step to make a customer happy embeds memories of exceptional customer service. Showcase Magazine’s annual Rave Awards highlight businesses and people within our community that have become favorites for a variety of reasons. The Rave Awards are our readers’ favorite lists. Each favorite impressed the person who voted for them. They did

something to become a favorite. Maybe they’re known for quality product. Maybe they’re known for providing the best customer service. Or maybe they opened their doors after hours because someone’s child was sick or had a toothache. Whatever the reason, these businesses and individuals are our readers’ favorites, and Showcase proudly presents them to you in this issue.

Favorite lists are important. The Rave list lets people know they can do business with our favorites in confidence and expect the best service possible. Making a year-end favorite list is a good way to share or recall a memory years down the line. World Championship Wrestling taught me that. Recently, the WWE Network started streaming the Saturday evening shows from the eighties. I’ve spent countless hours watching the shows. No one is really going to care about a squash match between Arn Anderson and Bill Mulkey, but the unscripted promos are legendary. Without the WWE Network bringing these shows back I would have never remembered how beautiful Ron Garvin’s wacky promos were, and that’s because I didn’t make a favorite list in 1986.

She Said...

I think January 16th could probably be your national day throughout the whole year. With all the problems in the world and the concerns we all have and the bills you created buying all of your Christmas presents, it seems to me that you could write something more important. At least in previous years you have written your New Year’s resolutions. You never kept any of them but then we both knew that it Photo by Michelle Dalton Photography There are other important days was a waste of time to write them. in January. January 11th is Secret Pal Day, who has secret It’s a little like all this January trivia stuff you’ve written. pals and where do you get them? I imagine if you caught me with a secret pal there would be a divorce pending, Let me give you my January list of important dates for you and it wouldn’t be kept a secret. to reflect on because this is my world according to Larry: January 12th is National Work Harder Day. I think that is one day we should try to get eliminated. January 13th is Make Your Dreams Come True Day. I am not sure how this day works, but since it’s in January I guess that is incentive to get the year started off right by wishing for all your dreams to come true. January 14th is Dress Up Your Pet Day. Dress them up as what? Other pets, monsters, fairy tale characters, or people? I am having a hard time digesting this one. January 16th is National Do Nothing Day. This is one day I can get behind. January 21st is National Hugging Day. This is another holiday where I could really get in trouble. January 23rd is Measure Your Feet Day. Now, I know you are thinking I made this one up, but I am sorry, I didn’t. I’m sharing this entire trivia list with you, but on a serious note, I have decided to invent my own day. I am not sure what it is yet because I haven’t decided what I want people to do on Larry’s Day

January 2nd - National Whine Day. What I have to hear all day about you getting fat for eating too much over the holidays. January 9th - Why Do I Have To Go To Work Day? It’s raining; it’s cold, my feet hurt, or any excuse to not have to go to work will do. January 15th - National Snow Day. (Goes along with January 9th.)You know if it snows we don’t have to go to work and you can cook and feed me all day. Oh yes, and hand me the remote while you’re bringing me my slippers! January 20th - I Would Like To Clean My Room, But I Am too Tired Day. This one speaks for itself. January 24th - All American Excuse Day. See all the above dates. You don’t have to invent a day of your own to celebrate. You pretty much do that every day anyway. I don’t see many people celebrating it, but I do recognize the fact that you celebrate it in your own mind. Maybe we should call it Larry’s National Self-Absorbed Day. That would describe your daily life, don’t you think?

January is a very interesting month. First of all, January 4th is Trivia Day. So you need to know that Betsy Ross was born in 1752, JRR Tolkien was born in 1892, Poet Carl Sandburg was born in 1878, Elvis Presley was born in 1935, and Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 — all in the month of January. This alone shows the importance of January.

A Better You

Succeed in Your New Year’s Resolutions!

By Fitness Professional and Healthy Writer Dave Gluhareff

For many, a new year brings a new plan. It’s a time for people to get on track by establishing a healthier lifestyle. I’m often asked for a plan that takes the guesswork out, this year, I’ll keep it simple and share few direct points. A new year can be viewed as a Renaissance (rebirth) period. It’s a fresh start to right what was wrong the previous year. Change is referred to as resolutions and the most common ones are, in some part, geared toward building a healthier lifestyle. It’s no secret that one of the key components to a positive quality of life is being healthy, yet nearly 80 percent of people who make resolutions break them. Why?

Von Wellington Photography

The simple answer is lack of motivation. The newness of starting over wears off after a few weeks and people fall back into familiar routines. To be successful at change you have to step outside of your comfort zone. Workout routines can be boring if you never mix things ups. Eating the same thing over and over will get boring. The key is finding herbs, spices, and recipes to liven things up. When you decide you’re going to get in shape, it’s not a goal, it’s a lifestyle. If you reach your ideal weight and fall back into the bad habit trap, you’ll find yourself at the same place next year. And that’s frustrating.

Another way to ensure your resolutions stick is to find someone in the same boat and paddle together. It’s easier to give up when you do things on your own, but if someone else is depending on you, that’s motivation to stay the course. And remember, patience is important. Change isn’t going to happen overnight. When you dedicate yourself to become healthier, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. At times, change may be slow, but in the long run you will thank yourself for sticking to it. In order for change to take place, you have to be serious and be realistic. Setting unrealistic expectations leads to failure. If you set a plan and stick to it, positive change will happen. It may take a while to get to the point you want to be at, but know that each day you’re getting healthier. There’s no room for excuses. If you do not apply the effort, you will never see change. A word you should add to your vocabulary is consistency. Consistency is very key to lasting healthy changes. Course correction takes consistency. Going into change armed with knowledge, determination, and a willingness to see things through puts you in a good position to be one of the people who succeed with their resolutions. Good luck. Happy New Year!! -Dave SM

Not So Common – Common Sense!

A Perspective on Public Schools – We Should Disappoint Our Critics – Insights Why DPS Teachers and Staff Inspire Me by Stan Jones, Superintendent of Danville Public Schools

One of the most challenging and frustrating realities of working in public education is that everyone knows more than the people actually doing the work. Public school employees are constantly berated, criticized, analyzed, and attacked in the court of public opinion. Quite frankly, most of our critics could not last a day doing our work. In my opinion, public school employees, especially teachers are heroes. The conventional view that we only work nine months out of the year and leave the job at 3:30 p.m. on most days is simply wrong. While many may leave the physical site at the end of the school day, most work from home preparing lessons, examining student work, calling or emailing parents, and grading assignments. Their work is never done yet they are the target of some of the most negative news stories. Rather than submitting to the criticism, many of our staff focus on what they know is true. They know that they are indeed making a profound difference in the lives of the children we serve. I love DPS staff especially our teachers. They are my heroes. Through them I see and seek hope for our community. They are the builders of leaders! They invest their hearts, heads, and souls in the future we believe in.

want to leave an impression for one year should plant corn; those who want to leave an impression for ten years should plan a tree; but those who want to leave an impression for 100 years should educate a human being. Our staff — especially teachers, are creating the future one student at a time. They are transforming lives and nurturing hearts. They are the greatest hope a child may have for joy during the day. In a single day they create a multitude of moments of peace and wishful thinking for children. They look at challenges and see opportunities. They understand that true living is found in serving, giving, and loving children. They know that one of the greatest pleasures in life is doing what people say you cannot do. They recognize that courage is a greater virtue than love and at best it takes courage to love. Last but not least, they inspire me to lead!

A STRONG EDUCATION BUILDS A STRONGER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

As superintendent, I am their advocate, supporter, encourager, defender, and spokesperson. I am honored by their dedication, commitment, compassion, and self-sacrifice as they work tirelessly to improve the lives of the children and families they serve. As they perform the most important work on the planet, please be reminded that in a typical day students are at school a maximum of about seven hours, excluding extra-curricular activities. For many of the students, those seven hours are the safest, most stable and enriching part of their day. For many, it may be the only time they will have a nutritious meal. For all of them, it is the time of the day when their lives are being shaped, nurtured, and guided toward becoming better people and future leaders. Teachers and staff in Danville Public Schools are driven to engage all students in meaningful and relevant learning experiences aimed not only at building foundational skills in specific content areas but also helping them develop character and personal responsibility skills they will need in life. Stated differently, our staff go beyond the call of duty every day to build skills, improve learning, heal hurts, nurture compassion, instill confidence, offer encouragement, model responsibility, set expectations, provide guidance, hug, love, listen, frame trusting relationships, engage in problem solving, and inspire minds.

Ready for a

Roaring Good Time? If you are looking for something fun for your family to do during the cold month of January, the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Martinsville,Virginia has you covered with scaly, Jurassic fun! On Saturday, January 23, 2016, the museum will host their annual Dino Day Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This spectacular family festival features dinosaur specimens and displays from the collections of the Virginia Museum of Natural History, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Dino Day Festival guests can see full-size dinosaur casts, including Allosaurus, Acrocanthasaurus, Tenontosaurus, and Deinonychus, as well as skull casts of Apatosaurus, Dunkleosteus, Appalachiosaurus, and more. Real dinosaur fossils from the museum collections will also be brought out for viewing. Several new specimens will be on display

this year and include some of the most wellknown and feared dinosaurs of their time, the Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. The Virginia Museum of Natural History brings in prominent scientists each year to the festival to give informative presentations. This year, Dr. Alex Hastings, assistant curator of paleontology at VMNH, will give visitors a fun and exciting look into the science of dinosaurs. Cold Blooded Encounters of Monroe, North Carolina will also be at the festival to provide visitors with a truly unique experience. Get up close and personal with a live emu to see the relationship between modern birds and dinosaurs. You can also meet a giant tortoise and crocodile. The indoor festival is fun for the entire family and will feature educational activities, games, and crafts all day long. A crowd favorite among young dinosaur fans is the Dino Dig Pit where future paleontologists can practice their excavation skills. Free face-painting, dino-tattoos, and balloon animals will also be offered during the event. Continued to page 48

Costumed dino characters will roam the halls of the museum throughout the day and you can get your photo taken with “Cera” the Triceratops. Dinos on Parade is another activity area that offers an opportunity for children to get in on the act and dress up like dinosaurs, too.

Convenient and free parking, on-site dining at the Paleo Café, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of places to sit and rest while the kids play make this a winning day trip venue for families. Plan to visit the area’s seven other museums, hiking trails, and artist studios to turn it into a multi-day getaway.

I love taking my young son to this event each year and seeing the sheer wonder on his face as he takes in and experiences all the exhibits and activities. We both particularly enjoy seeing the Virginia Museum of Natural History’s animatronic Triceratops that magically comes to life to delight dino fans of all ages.

Don’t forget to take home some of the fun. The Virginia Museum of Natural History has a wide variety of dinosaur merchandise to purchase in their gift shop including stuffed animals, T-shirts, fossil kits, model dinos, and so much more.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History is a working research laboratory, so in addition to all the fun of the festival, guests can also watch through large windows as paleontologists and scientists work in their labs. The best part of all is that you can make this event into a full day of fun.

A Special Child

flash fiction

52 Magazine 52 Showcase Showcase Magazine

Joshua was only eight-years old and his father had been a shepherd herder all of his life. Joshua was following in his fathers’ footsteps. Many nights his father stayed out in the fields with the flock guarding them from thieves who preyed on other people’s sheep. Joshua heard many stories around the fire each night as his father, along with his friends, told tale after tale about their experiences as sheep herders. Joshua had been born late in his parents’ lives; his mother died when he was born, so he never really knew her. From time to time Joshua would visit some of the neighbors and play with their children, but he never really made a friend whom he could call his own. There was one story that his father told again and again until Joshua felt like he knew this story well enough to share it with his classmates. In school, students were instructed to wait until the teacher called on them to share a story. Joshua couldn’t just go up to his teacher and say, “Let me tell you my favorite story.” She would have laughed at him or the other students would have made fun of him; so he just kept the story to himself. He hoped one day to get up enough courage to ask his father if the story was really true or if he made it up. Maybe it had been passed down from generation to generation. The warm feeling that this particular tale imparted to Joshua was the primary highlight when told around the camp fire at night. It always started out the same way each time. The shepherds were tending their flocks when they all saw a bright star in the eastern sky. Being shepherds, they all had witnessed the spectacular show of the stars. If the moon was not bright, the sheer darkness of the night made all the stars seem brighter. But on this one particular night, one star was so bright the shepherds decided to follow it to see where it would take them. The shepherds left their sheep, which was unheard of in the annals of sheep herding. The vividness of the star summoned all of them to follow the road to where the star shined the brightest. The way that Joshua’s father told the story, nothing could have kept them from leaving their flock and proceeding as quickly as they could to the east except for this event. Along the way, they ran into three wise men who were traveling by camels. They, too, were following this star that had drawn them from the west to the east. || January 2016 | www.showcasemagazine.com January 2016 | www.showcasemagazine.com

The wise men told the shepherds that they knew something wonderful had happened. They were so excited and amazed that they had even brought gifts to whoever they were going to find under this bright star. My father said the shepherds were grief stricken because they had no gifts to bring. They were not even sure of what they would find, but they knew something special was making that bright star lead them to an awesome site. The shepherds came to a town called Bethlehem, and they followed the wise men as they came to an Inn. The innkeeper told them there was nothing special going on in the town and as far as he knew, there was nothing extraordinary in his inn. But the wise men were demanding and tenacious. They looked all around the inn and found that behind the inn there was a family including a man, a woman, and a manger. In the manger, they found a little baby boy. He was wrapped in a dirty cloth, but he looked as serene as any newborn baby they had ever seen. The shepherds followed the wise men, and they were amazed at the quietness and depth of their feelings. It was like nothing they had ever felt before. They felt as if they were in the presence of someone who was a kind of deity, like a king or future ruler. The serenity they felt was heartwarming and sincere. Instantaneously, they felt overcome with a calmness they had never felt before. The shepherds believed they had to do something for this newborn baby, but what could they do? One of them went back to the innkeeper and told him about this baby lying in a manger back behind the inn, so why hadn’t he given them a room? He told them that there was no room in the inn and that was all he could provide for them. The innkeeper felt badly for the family who had a newborn baby with no clothes and no provisions. He left the counter of the inn and went into a backroom. When he returned he was carrying a pair of baby shoes. He said take these shoes and give them to the baby to warm his feet. They belonged to my own baby boy who died at birth and he never got to wear them. I was going to sell them, but I would rather give them to this baby who can wear them today to warm his own feet. The shepherd carried the shoes out to the manger and gave them to the mother who put the shoes on those tiny little feet to keep them warm. The shepherds came home, knowing that they didn’t have fancy gifts of perfume or incense, but they had shared in the birth and the warmth of this special child. The innkeeper was comforted in the thought that his son’s shoes would finally be worn.

The warm feeling that this particular tale imparted to Joshua was the primary highlight when told around the camp fire at night. It always started out the same way each time.

For three years when my sister and I were in elementary school, we lived in Germany when the Army stationed Daddy there. For three years when my sister and I were in elementary school, we lived in Germany when the Army stationed Daddy there. For each of the three New Year’s Eves in Germany, we had a party with other military families. The one thing we remember most is the Bavarian horn that Daddy bought. It was so loud, and we all took turns blowing it throughout the evening. Those were noisy parties, with that sound that was meant to call sheep or cows in from distant valleys and mountains. I am reminded of that Bavarian horn, now in possession of my sister, many evenings when we prepare to leave the shelter. Our Umbrella cockatoo, Buddy, begins screeching at decibels that hurt the ears. However, he is not being naughty; he is following his instinct to call for his flock members so they can gather to safely roost for the night. No amount of begging or telling him to hush can stop him. His ear-shattering yells serve to remind us that animals and humans are different, even though we are alike in many ways. We increasingly expect animals to fit into our narrowly defined world, and their needs may not always be met. I wonder how much stress or even harm we innocently inflict on our companion animals. There is no way of knowing for sure. Nevertheless, we promise to press forward in 2016 with our efforts to help the animals. We will continue to do what we know to do: We will help people spay/neuter their dogs and cats, we will continue to promote adoptions and carefully screen the homes to do everything in our power to ensure their troubles were over the second they were brought to us, and we will provide a shelter where they are kept safe, warm, fed, watered, and comfortable. Sometimes our work is noisy and public, and sometimes it is quieter. It is always done with love for the animals with whom we share the earth. SM

Kiko

Kiko is about seven months old. He is a Pomeranian mix and was brought to us when his owner didn’t have enough time to take care of him.
