January 2019
Starting at Zero Welcome to 2019. It’s a clean slate to erase what you don’t like, and a time to build on things that make you happy. Just as with any other new year, one of the buzzwords is resolutions. We’ve talked about resolutions, and the incredible percentage-rate of how people fail to see them through. I’m guilty. I cannot begin to count how many resolutions I’ve set and broken within the first few months of a year. Last year, for the first time, I kept a resolution. I decided I would stop buying bottled water and use filtration systems instead. My reason was environmental. I never thought about why I was successful with this resolution when all others failed until I read a book by James Clear called Atomic Habits. Basically, I saw my resolution through because I didn’t define it as a goal. I treated it as a habit. Setting a resolution is creating (or breaking) a habit. If your goal is to lose 20 pounds, what happens when you get there? If you want to keep the pounds off, you have to make it a habit to eat cleaner. It’s about habits, not goals. Around the summer of 2018, I developed a minor health issue that was more a hinderance than a serious concern, but it led to me taking a long, hard look at my overall health. I say it wasn’t too serious, but it affected the quality of life I was accustomed to which led to depression. That’s when I researched “self-care.” I made it a point to stop taking my good health for granted. This issue of Showcase is dedicated to self-care. January is the perfect time to start taking care of yourself if you aren’t already. Instead of dreaming of resolutions that have a 92 percent chance of failure, create better habits. Make (and keep) doctors’ and dentists’ appointments, take a yoga class, try reiki, meditate, quit smoking, eat cleaner, just treat your body with respect and care.

The Self care Issue Reiki: Heal Yourself, Heal the World
Reiki
Heal Yourself, Heal the World By Anna Brooks Photos by Brooke Klauss
F
ounded in Tokyo, Japan, Reiki is a healing technique created due to the revolutionizing discovery of the body’s energy system. The process was discovered by Dr. Mikoa Usui in the mid19th century. Dr. Usui found that Reiki was capable of
conditionally eliminating the use of medication as it was an alternative form of therapy for those struggling with any physical, emotional, or mental diseases. Reiki may be used to either heal tainted energy, or to work towards a more balanced energy. Naturally, if one’s life force energy is low, he or she may feel sick or stressed; however, if one’s life force energy is in a state of balance, then he or she will feel healthy. The very meaning of the word Reiki is translated as “universal life” or “energy.” The process was created based upon the ideology that energy from a higher being descends into the body of a Reiki healer, thus moving through his or her hands, and into the body of whoever is being healed. Today, Reiki is essentially a process of shifting energy that already exist within a room, or within a human being with the intention of balancing that energy. In its essence, the technique is a spiritual form of self-care. Reiki slowly found itself present in the western world, and as a result there are an abundance of Reiki practitioners in the United States. Likewise, there has been a spark in the practice of Reiki in the city of Danville. Sarah Neighbors, Danville’s very own Reiki master, has been devoted to the process for over a year now. Neighbors completed fifty hours of formal training upon becoming a master of the practice. She now practices the healing technique at the Revitalization Station located on Craghead Street as well as the Firefly Yoga Studio located on Main Street. Neighbors describes Reiki as a healing technique that uses universal, or life force energy, to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and stimulate the natural healing process. The healing properties of Reiki include, but are not limited to, mental clarity, a healthier parasympathetic nervous system, and a decrease in inflammation, chronic fatigue, emotional trauma, insomnia, and anxiety or depression. Neighbors compares herself, as a healer, to a conduit for the energy that already exists in a room. Many have Continued to Page 12

fallen under the misleading impression that Reiki requires a practitioner to give their own internal energy to whomever is being healed. “To give all of one’s energy to another human would be utterly depleting,” says Neighbors. Rather, a Reiki practitioner’s job is to move the preexisting energy in the room to benefit the patient. To believe in the practice of Reiki is to believe that energy can be shifted, and energy can be felt. Oftentimes, there is skepticism regarding the practice of Reiki as it claims that an energy force, which is seemingly intangible, has the ability to heal. Neighbors understands many people’s doubt towards Reiki, as it is a process incapable of being seen. She defends energy’s ability to be felt by relating it to the feeling one may possess when walking into a room full of sad people. She states that before one may know that everyone is sad, he or she may feel a sense of ere
just upon walking into the room. Another instance that Neighbors suggests one may experience an energy first hand, is in the check-out line at the grocery store. Before one turns around to confirm that there is someone putting their groceries on the conveyer belt behind them, he or she may feel a presence without knowing anyone is there. Neighbors indicates that if one has ever experienced either of these scenarios, he or she has felt a life force energy. Neighbors believes that the positive effects that her clients experience after the practice is the only source of proof for Reiki, other than the experience. For example, Reiki is proven effective when someone leaves their appointment alleviated from the pain of a two-week-old migraine, or when someone has an emotional realization after the process. During Neighbors’s training she was required to have a Reiki experience of her own. She recalls, “My experiences in receiving Reiki have all been the same, yet different. One’s experience depends on where he or she is energetically. At times, it feels just like a wave of calm or grounding. Sometimes it is really energizing. Reiki can feel like strong heat, coolness, buzzing, and tingling. During sessions, one may feel little sensations in random spots, or even involuntary muscle spasms.” Reiki is not something to be proved, like a theory or a scientific law, but rather it is something to believe in, like a chosen religion. One does not have to disregard their skepticism in order to experience Reiki. Neighbors suggests that if one is curious, yet skeptical of Reiki the only solution is to, “Try [Reiki]!” The process is completely noninvasive and incapable of harm. Post-Reiki, one’s skepticism will fleet as they leave the practice with a feeling of rejuvenation. Neighbors tells that she has had many clients receive Reiki who were unsure of the process; however, they left their appointment saying, “I do not know what just happened, but I feel good.” Neighbors says, “Reiki is profound, it is something that cannot really be proven, but only felt in a personal way. Again, the only proof resides in trying [it].” Neighbors reveals that to be a Reiki master is a prodigious responsibility. In order to be a master, or a teacher, of any practice requires one to continue regarding themselves as a student. This means that in order to help anyone else in this world, one must be willing to help themselves, as well. Neighbors believes that in order to use her mastery to heal the world, she must continue to help herself, better herself, and accept herself. Neighbors, along with many other Reiki practitioners, heal with the mentality, “Heal yourself, heal the world,” because, ultimately, Reiki is a practice that strives for universal balance.

Yoga is a Practice Not Perfection Photos by Brooke Klauss
Y
oga can be intimidating for newcomers. The practice has many styles and forms that seem overwhelming. But, under its surface, yoga is a simplistic, traditional lifestyle that is guided and inspired by ancient philosophy. Once you get over the fear of rolling out your mat for the first time, yoga is beneficial to your whole well-being. Firefly Yoga studio owner, Lauren Mathena adds, “The benefits of yoga are improved strength, flexibility, balance, stamina, and mobility in the body and in the mind. Yoga is a tremendous remedy for anything that might be ailing you physically, mentally, or emotionally. It can enhance an already-happy, healthy life, or it can stimulate great improvement if you are looking for a change.” Before you try yoga, you’ll ask yourself is it a right fit for me? Mathena has the answer. “Yoga is truly for everybody. From the smallest children to older adults, to teens and college students, to desk workers and truck drivers, to orthopedic surgeons to middle school teachers, everyone

can access yoga. Having a mat is really nice, but that is not even necessary.” Yoga originated with the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. By definition, it is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices. Danville Yoga and Meditation Center owner, Cyndi Reames adds, “For those of us who teach and practice Yoga, it is so much more. It can be a way to overcome trauma and addiction, for others a way to relax and find themselves, and some just want a great workout for the body and mind.” Heated classes assist in pain relief, detoxification, weight loss, and increased flexibility. Reames offers heated yoga at her studio. Practicing yoga has also shown to lower blood pressure and blood sugar, boost immunity, and improve self-esteem and mental capacity. In modern terms, yoga encompasses poses (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation. Continued to Page 16

Reames says, “Yoga incorporates mindfulness and the use of breath as the student moves through poses.” One of the most asked questions from beginners is what’s the difference between is stretching and yoga. Mathena says, “Stretching your muscles is part of what is included in yoga, but stretching is just one piece of yoga. However, if the only benefit you are seeking is stretching, then yoga will still be a great time investment for you. Stretching before and after exercise, after waking up in the morning, before going to bed, or during intervals throughout the day can help with sore muscles, aching joints, productivity, sleep quality, and more.” There are many types of yoga with some of the more popular being “yang” style classes like Vinyasa Flow, Buti Yoga and POUND that Mathena says “incorporates building muscular strength, increased flexibility, and improved balance while including cardio sprints and core exercises.” “Yin” classes such as Gentle Yoga, Yin Yoga, and Restorative Yoga use accessories such as blocks and blankets to relax the body in a meditative-like atmosphere. Now that you’ve decided to give yoga a try, you’ll want to figure out a schedule. Mathena suggests finding one day a week, preferably the same day and time and mark a class in your calendar with a reminder. “Grab your mat and give yourself the gift of yoga for just 10 minutes a day— one hour a week to start and maybe building up to a few times a week. Once yoga becomes part of your life, your body will want to move and spending an hour on your mat a few days a week, or every day, will become part of your routine,” she adds. Firefly Yoga offers the above as 16 Showcase Magazine |

well as classes that are somewhere in between like Level 1-2 Hatha Yoga and Beginners’ Yoga. Mathena is a certified prenatal yoga teacher which allows Firefly to offer group and private prenatal classes. Reames says, “At Danville Yoga and Meditation Center we provide classes in Heated Yoga, Non-Heated Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Yoga for Beginners, Vinyasa Yoga. Each month we also offer at least one Specialty Class. Tai Chi, Aikido, and Wang Chun Kung Fu are also offered. Reiki and massage are also available by appointment.” Danville has plenty to offer for beginners and long-time practitioners of yoga. And if you’re just starting your journey, you’ll find out early on yogis are incredibly friendly and willing to help. Mathena says it took her nearly seven years to attend a class after she became interested in yoga, and then several classes to find the style she liked. “My advice is don’t wait. If you’re interested in the benefits of yoga, there is no reason not to try today. Reames echoes Mathena’s advice. She says, “Students just need to come in with an open mind and willingness to learn. Be open to trying other teachers and styles of yoga to find the class that’s right for you. Don’t give up. Yoga is a practice, not perfection.” For more information about Firefly Yoga visit www. fireflydanville.com. Paws for a Cause
Paws for a Cause Written by Paulette Dean Executive Director Danville Humane Society
January 1st is usually a day of reflection for me. In December, I choose a theme for the next year, and I like having a quiet New Year’s Day to think about the coming year. One year, my theme was a quote from Charles Dickens, “Have a heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.” Another year my theme was from the book of Luke: “In your patience possess ye your souls.”
This will help reduce traffic flow, thereby reducing possible disease contamination. We hope you join us for a tour and re-dedication of the oldest part of the shelter that is being upgraded. The date and time will be announced. 3. Our work with placement groups will continue to grow. Shelters that do not accept stray cats in their locality come to Danville to get our wonderful shelter cats and place them in their areas as inside-only cats. Our reputation for having the best dogs and cats continues to spread, and we are thrilled that means more homes are being found.
As an organization, our annual theme would be one of humaneness and compassion. Every program and policy we put in place has that theme. We pledge to continue doing that in 2019 by the following: 1. We fully recognize that only through decreasing the number of unwanted litters can we ever hope to decrease the number of We can’t wait to see what this little boy turns out to be as an adult! 4.
