Editor’s Letter
Put Me in Coach Last December, Showcase introduced its first Community Strong People of the Year. The editorial board at Showcase chose individuals based on their passion to give back and create a stronger community for all to enjoy. This year, we asked last year’s “Community Strong” people to choose this year’s group. The 2017 Community Strong People of the Year come with impressive resumes. You’ll find their uplifting stories in this issue. Commenting on last year’s group, I said these individuals have dedicated time, energy, and ideas to the evolution of Danville into a better place to work, live, and play. The same can be said again this year about Kenny Lewis Sr., Tammy Wright-Warren, Randy Johnson, Shannon Hair, Jon Horin, Lorrie Eanes-Brooks, James Buckner, and Laurie Moran. While we recognize individuals, it takes a collaborative team effort to sustain a healthy community. Hopefully, these stories will inspire motivate others to join the team. I’m big on finding inspiration through quotes, and something Coretta Scott King said sums up building a strong community perfectly. “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassion of its members.” There is a responsibility that comes with being part of a community. Everyone should want to play a part in the enhancement of a community. Getting involved leads to personal growth and building new friendships, both of these things are key components in strengthening communities. So, as we say goodbye to 2017, let’s all vow to be community strong in 2018. Have a Happy Holiday and enjoy the issue.

me joy to see individuals succeed, especially those who need us the most. How do you balance life, work, and community involvement? We prioritize by putting God first, family, and then community. Trust me, it’s easier said than done. It’s somewhat easier now that I’m retired.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? What you make happen for someone else, God will make happen for you. – My Pastor Bill Motley Who are your real-life heroes and why? The one that stands out the most is my oldest brother. When both of my parents passed, my brother dropped his career and come home to raise me and the rest of our family. He made sure we earned our education. What is it about Danville that makes it special to you? It’s my home. Danville is the place that gave me my opportunity to display my gifts and talents.

How do you recharge? What do you like to do outside of work and volunteerism? My faith and relationship with God is a major part of my life. I love reading the Word. Prayer, praise, and worship recharge me each day. Our church, Abundant Life, helps meet those needs. Also, I love spending time with my family and enjoying their successes. What is your idea of happiness? Happiness to me is being content with knowing who I am in Christ. Do you have a favorite quote, and if so what is it? We enjoy going to the movies and eating at various restaurants. We try to see how healthy we can eat while still enjoying the food. What are your visions for the future of Danville? I envision Danville have a world-class educational system where every child has a pathway to a successful career, athletic programs that are second-to-none in the state with state-of-the-art facilities in all sports. I also envision we live up to the name as being a true “city of churches” what are united. What are you most looking forward to in 2018? Being debt free. www.showcasemagazine.com

along with my day-to-day life, but I am blessed to have a very understanding wife who encourages me to do more than I ever thought I was capable of doing. I am also very fortunate to be surrounded by a great team of co-workers at Wilkins & Co who are there to help me whenever I am in need. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? My dad used to tell me all the time to give life your all and if you fall, get back up and try again. Never give up. Who are your real-life heroes and why? My mom and dad are my heroes. They always loved me, my brother Jay and sisters Jean, Ann, and June unconditionally. They sacrificed to make sure we were
taken care of and although we didn’t have much, we were all happy kids. What is it about Danville that makes it special to you? It’s my home. I love that we have so many hidden treasures in our city like the river walk, the bike trails, the architecture of our historic buildings, and the homes are just as nice, if not better, as other places I’ve visited in the world. I like knowing when I go to the grocery store or out to dinner, I will likely run into someone I know. I like that we, as a community, can see we have problems and we also know that, as a community, we are the only ones who will be able to fix our problems by working together and standing for positive change as a whole.
“
My overall vision for the future of our city is to have a united community working together to build a better Danville. There’s no individual person who can lift Danville to new heights by themselves, but when we, as a community, lock arm-in-arm with one another, we can accomplish wonders.

hy is community involvement so important to you? With all humbleness, why wouldn’t community involvement be important to all of us? This is the community we live in. It’s the community our family,
friends, and neighbors live in. I want this to be the best community on planet Earth. What inspires you to volunteer? Volunteering is very rewarding. It makes you feel really good about what’s been accomplished at the end of the day. If more people start to ask the question, “What can I do for others?” then we will have a better community, a better neighborhood, a better nation, and we have a better world to live in. There are a lot of hurting people out there, and volunteers make a tremendous impact and difference in the lives of those people. Making a difference in people’s lives inspires me. How do you balance life, work, and community involvement? I have honestly answer that by saying almost all I do is work, and that’s by choice. I love what I do. I love that I have the opportunity to serve, run, and direct an organization that’s making an impact on our community, our nation, and around the world. An average work week is about 70 to 75 hours a week. So, there isn’t much time for other things, but we have to try and strike some sort of a balance and find time for life and other things. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? As far as a leader is concerned, my former pastor Tim Knuckles told me when we first started God’s Pit Crew that whatever we do with GPC do your best to do it with excellence because not only does God deserve it, he expects it. I have found that to be good advice in everything we do in life. I would tell people to enjoy life, enjoy the journey.

Who are your real-life heroes and why? I have many — first of all, my children, I’m grateful for them and what they do in life. Second, would be the mentors I’ve had in my life — Pastor Knuckles, Pastor Roger Ewing, Pastor Jackie Poe, lots of folks who’ve sewn into my life. Some of my biggest heroes are the volunteers I get to work with every day. To see people like James Hodge, David Willis, Ricky Hyler, and I could name dozens and dozens of people who give their time, talent, and treasures freely to make a difference in other people’s lives. What is it about Danville that makes it special to you? The people make it special. I’m continually blown away by away by the generosity and kindheartedness of the wonderful people who live here.

How do you recharge. What do you like to do outside of work and volunteerism? If I have to be honest, I guess outside of work, I work some more. But I do enjoy spending time for my family. I don’t race anymore, but I still have one race car, so when I get a chance to run a few laps, that’s a good stress reliever for me. What is your idea of happiness? Good family, good friends, and doing what I get to do for a living. I feel honored and blessed that God’s given me the opportunity make a difference in people’s lives. What are your favorite things to do in Danville? I love going to the movies with my wife. hy is community involvement so important to you? I believe that in order for change to take place you must be involved and willing to have a seat at the table to voice your opinions. It is the best way to serve, connect, and celebrate our community. Being involved
gives me a sense of belonging, and it has developed many relationships which would not have taken place. What inspires you to volunteer? I come from a family of volunteers; therefore, I have seen the evidence of its importance all of my life. For me it is about giving back and making a difference in someone’s life. Simply put, it feels good just to see the smile and witness the appreciation of those served. How do you balance life, work, and community involvement? I am able to balance life, work and community involvement mainly because my children are now grown, and I have the time to be involved. While family is still important to me, it is also important to be able to give back to the community. I am able to still enjoy life, while being actively involved in my community. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? The best advice ever given to me was by my father, Kirby Wright. Never be so comfortable in life that you stop growing...Keep pushing! Who are your real-life heroes and why? I have several. My parents, Kirby and Thelma Wright, because they instilled in me a work ethic that I am able to both see and practice daily. I am blessed to be able to work with my father daily at Negril and W&W Luxury Limousine Service. My godmother, the late Ruby Archie. I admired her as a professional as well as a community leader. What is it about Danville that makes it special to you? Danville is special to me because it is home! I have so many fond memories from childhood to the present. During my lifetime, I have seen Danville transition from a textile industry to an industrial industry. I was able to see the advantages and benefits of the sale of the hospital and the organization of the Danville Regional Foundation which has initiated and funded many projects in the Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County areas. Also, I am happy to say that I was able to see Averett College grow into a thriving university which is now one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the world. Danville has also become a well-known research center with the relationship established between IALR and Virginia Tech.

He is also the Executive Director of the DCC Educational Foundation. Shannon has raised over $25 million for DCC’s Educational Foundation, used mostly to award scholarships. hy is community involvement so important to you? My parents instilled in me a strong sense of community service. It takes the vision and contribution of a wide variety of individuals to move a community forward.
What inspires you to volunteer? I truly want to make a difference in the lives of the people in this community. I believe that Servant Leadership is the foundation on which strong communities are built that will enrich the lives of all that reside in our area. How do you balance life, work, and community involvement? It is a difficult juggling act. There are times that work takes precedence, but there are times my family life must come before anything else. It isn’t easy to do, but the rewards are worth the sacrifice. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? The best advice I have ever been given came from my parents when they told me, “If something really matters to you, don’t give up on it, fight for it and make it a reality.” Who are your real-life heroes and why? My real-life hero is my father, Richard. With the values he taught me, the unconditional love and support he has given me, and the caring he has shown for others, he is everything I aspire to be in a father, husband, and a man. What is it about Danville that makes it special to you? Danville is my home. It is where I am raising my family. I have always compared Danville to Mayberry. Danville has that small-town feel, where values matter, family and friends matter, and where neighbors are still willing to help their neighbor. This is very difficult to find in the fast-paced world we live in today.

What is your idea of happiness? My definition of happiness changes depending on the context. When it comes to family, my happiness lies in my children being healthy, being able to live a useful and productive life and finding a love that sustains and supports them, whether this is in their personal life or through their career. When it comes to my professional life, my happiness lies in being able to advance the college’s mission and provide opportunities for DCC students to achieve their educational goals. Finally, when considering my community, my happiness lies in helping our community to become the best it can be for all of our citizens.
“
I truly want to make a difference in the lives of the people in this community. I believe that Servant Leadership is the foundation on which strong communities are built that will enrich the lives of all that reside in our area.
”
- Shannon Hair, 2017 Showcase Magazine Person of the Year
Do you have a favorite quote, and if so what is it? My favorite quote is by Mark Twain, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” While I believe the answer to “why” changes as we change, my “why” at the moment, is to do everything I can to make Danville a better place for our children’s future. What are your favorite things to do in Danville? Being active. Danville’s new bike share program allows my family to enjoy the outdoors along the walking trail. Also having the activities available with the Danville Braves and Danville Science Center provides unique opportunities to spend time together as a family. What are your visions for the future of Danville? When I think about the future of Danville, my parents’ advice comes into play. We, together, can make Danville an amazing place to work and live. But in order to accomplish this, we must all work together to overcome the challenges of our area. Some of the challenges we are faced with include escalating crime, gangs and drugs, educational attainment and economic development. If we, as a community, can control the crime rate, gangs and drugs and increase our educational attainment, economic development opportunities will follow. What are you most looking forward to in 2018? As Vice President of Institutional Advancement & Development for Danville Community College, I am
especially looking forward to the partnerships we will be building in the community as the college embarks on its next Major Gifts Campaign – Pathways to Regional Success. Through these partnerships and pathways, Danville Community College and the DCC Educational Foundation will be working with community leaders to advance workforce development, economic development and quality of life for our citizens. www.showcasemagazine.com

Laurie Moran Photos Provided by the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce
I
n June of 2017, Danville and Pittsylvania County lost one of their biggest advocates for a strong community. Laurie Moran spent her life giving back to the community she loved. Laurie was the definition of “community strong. Laurie held the position of President of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce from January 2002 until the time of her passing. Her passion for building a stronger community was seen through her work with many organizations including the Danville Regional Foundation, Smart Beginnings of Danville Pittsylvania County, the United Way of Pittsylvania County, and The

Launch Place. She gave her time, knowledge, and energy to the community. Even if you took her job out of the equation, Laurie was just an amazing human being, who gave her all to lift up everyone around her. She always had that great smile on her face. She was truly a beacon of light for this community. Laurie made our community a better place. We continue to miss her. The Showcase Magazine Editorial Board

Paws for a Cause
Paws for a Cause If I could know for sure that Santa Claus receives letters at the North Pole, I would write one each year on behalf of the animals, and this is what I would say to him: Dear Santa: Through the years, you have given me so many wonderful memories and gifts. When we were children, my sister and I waited in lines to see you. Because we were Army brats, we saw you in Hawaii, Kansas, Germany, Michigan, and California. No matter the location, you never failed to greet us with kindness. It is because of that kindness that I feel safe in asking certain things of you this year.

please just make sure that they have decent shelter. So many of them do not. Maybe the people who own them would be just as happy if you left them a stuffed animal and took their dog to the North Pole. I feel safe in promising you that the dogs will love to lie in front of your fireplace. There are many, many cats that are living around dumpsters and other very unfriendly places for cats. I am not sure if you will be able to fit all of them in your sleigh, but I hope you try.

Perhaps the greatest gift you could give to the animals this year is for more human hearts to be kind. All the animals would benefit from kind human hearts.
This little boy pug mix is a sweetheart. He was found as a stray wandering around on Franklin Turnpike. He’s about four years old.
If when you fly over Danville and the surrounding area this year, please look out for animals that may need your help. There will be many.
Some dogs will be chained in backyards and would love for you to take them off the chains. If that is not possible, then

Hot Chocolate Cookies are so popular in our family that I end up making dozens and dozens for family members during the holidays! They’re rich chocolate cookies with melted marshmallows stacked on top with a chocolate glaze drizzle. Add some Christmas sprinkles and they’re ready for the holidays! Yields: 45 cookies
INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIES: 1/2 cup butter, unsalted (1 stick) 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 3 eggs 2 teaspoons chocolate extract (or vanilla) 135 mini marshmallows
FOR THE ICING: 4 tablespoons melted butter 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/4 cup hot water 2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon chocolate extract (or vanilla)
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE COOKIES • In a small sauce pan, melt the butter and then whisk in the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Whisk together until the butter and semi-sweet chocolate chips melt into a smooth chocolate sauce. • Set aside and let cool. • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. • In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the sugar, eggs and extract together. Mix until well combined. • Once the chocolate and butter mixture is cooled mix, it into the sugar and egg mixture. Not So Common - Common Sense
13, 2017. An overall draft vision statement included the theme that Danville Public Schools is “a community invested in education.” Another notion that evolved is the idea that we are “all in” when it comes to education in our community. These vision statements are beliefs that drive goal setting, planning, and decision making for the Board, Superintendent, and staff. These statements are in draft form and will be discussed further in upcoming meetings.
The Danville School Board held a three-day retreat, November 2 through November 4, 2017, to consider a future vision of public education in the city of Danville and develop a robust framework for the Danville Public Schools’ Education Strategic Plan. The Board and Superintendent spent three days brainstorming and planning in an effort to develop a compelling vision, goals, and potential initiatives to achieve those goals. The retreat goals included team building aimed at blending and leveraging the experiences, preferences, and values of Board members and the Superintendent toward serving the Danville community as it develops its Public Education Strategic Plan. The retreat also provided participants an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the governance roles and responsibilities while identifying focus areas that will assist the school division to develop and sustain a strategic approach that will enable it to be high performing and meet those expectations. The School Board confirmed its commitment to the themes that arose from the retreat during its work session held on November
Not So Common Common Sense!
The Board also identified several target areas for specific goals including: optimal academic achievement, investing in the highest quality employees, creating and maintaining 21st Century learning environments, and ensuring that each child realizes his or her unique potential. The Board also emphasized its commitment to maintain a strong working relationship with City Council and between the City Manager and Superintendent. What is the proposed vision Specifically, the Board identified six specific for Danville’s desired strategic goals to achieve the vision: public education system? • DPS develops and implements an by Stan Jones, Superintendent aggressive curriculum that challenges and of Danville Public Schools inspires every student to optimize learning and success. • DPS attracts and continuously invests in its employees and their professional development to maximize student success. • DPS creates and maintains infrastructure and operations essential for dynamic 21st Century learning. • DPS engages the community and all of its members to embrace their role in a comprehensive approach that realizes each child’s unique potential. • With help from the larger community, DPS identifies and addresses the physical, emotional, and social needs of each child as they affect his or her educational achievement. • Through DPS’s exemplary public relations and customer service, Danville will attain a reputation across the state as a community that is invested in education.

Following the retreat and subsequent meetings, the School Board members identified a next step to complete the Strategic Plan to include the Superintendent scheduling Strategic Planning Session(s) for staff in November and December 2017 with a goal of completing the draft DPS Strategic Plan by the end of this year. Next, the Superintendent will work with the facilitators to schedule a joint session after the first of the year (2018) for the School Board and staff members who developed the draft DPS Strategic Plan. This will assure that there is clear alignment between the goals identified by the School Board and the objectives and action plans drafted by staff members and support from community members that the DPS Strategic Plan will ultimately include the vision, goals, objectives, action plans, and measures. Ultimately the Plan will guide the work of the Board, the staff, and the community as a tool for systematic measures and accountability for Danville’s desired public education system. www.showcasemagazine.com

Belonging means to be accepted as a member or part… such a simple word that means so much to the human experience. Belonging brings a sense of value to a person, it means they are understood and welcomed. The concept of belonging is at the center of the inclusion movement. Inclusion is being a part of what everyone else is, and being welcomed and embraced as a member who belongs. Practices in providing supports and services to people with developmental disabilities have evolved over the years to a deeper understanding of what it means to have A Life Like Yours, and that effective supports for people are those that honor and recognize that people with developmental disabilities want the same things in life that we all do…. a home to call our own, a job or activities that fulfill us in our daily life and friends and family to share the successes and struggles of life. The Arc talks about A Life Like Yours when describing supports and services for people to remind us all of this sameness in the need to simply belong. People with disabilities belong in our schools, in our neighborhoods, in our workplaces, and everywhere we are in our communities….they simply belong. The work of service providers is simply to provide support to people so that they can access the things already in the world. These supports can take any form, they are specifically designed for each person. And with the right supports, everyone regardless of level of ability, can take part in all that our world and communities have to offer. The Inclusion Movement is a matter of Civil Rights, we must afford the same opportunities for a full and meaningful life to everyone, regardless of ability. Segregation and isolation of people with disabilities has shown us that institutions cannot begin to tap the potential of individuals to learn, participate and contribute to their communities. They isolate
people from family, friends, and communities, creating higher risks for abuse and neglect. The experience of the past few decades has shown that no one needs to be separated, and that everyone belongs. Where do you belong? The Arc of Southside believes that you belong with us. We are a membership organization where numbers of members equal the power to influence public policy and public perceptions. We hope you will join us as we work to help everyone Belong in our community.
