EDITOR’S LETTER
FEBRUARY 2022
Rave On
CEO Andrew Scott Brooks scott@showcasemagazine.com
“Do right. Do your best. Treat others as you want to be treated.” Those are words from Lou Holtz. It’s a good synopsis for Showcase’s annual RAVE Awards. This issue marks the 15th anniversary of the RAVE Awards. It’s become an honor to highlight individuals and businesses in our area that go above and beyond to provide excellent product, customer support, and services. Each year, we offer a multitude of categories. The favorites possess a great deal of diversity, but all have one thing in common — putting their audience first. Believe me, your clients, customers, fans, etc. are your audience. They tune in to see what new products or services you’re offering or what new songs you’re playing at shows. It’s important to keep your audience happy. It’s crucial if you want to grow your audience. Studies have shown that it costs nearly five times more to gain a new customer than it does to keep an existing customer. Having a positive reputation can help lower the cost of new acquisitions. Potential clients will research before trusting you with their business. And the most important thing they will look for is the customer experience. I titled this note after a Buddy Holly song. One of the most distinctive things about Buddy Holly was his glasses. They were part of his brand. When Holly began performing, he wore plain plastic frames. At the urging of his eye doctor, Holly switched to horn-rimmed glasses that would soon be known as “Buddy Holly Glasses.” Buddy Holly also set Waylon Jennings up with his first recording session. Both men shared the same hometown, Lubbock, Texas. Holly played guitar on two of the songs. His kindness to help a fellow artist gave the world one of the greatest voices of country music. For a business or artist, establishing a brand can be difficult, but the best foundation is kindness. Be kind to people. It could end up being your “Buddy Holly Glasses.”

hen Justin Williams was looking to find his calling in his hometown of Danville, all he had to do was to call upon his wide variety of life experiences, be they in the military, his education, or his family’s legacy in the food service industry.
Williams is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the Army who has traveled the world from Virginia to South Korea, Afghanistan and back, and he’s brought much of what he has learned back home to create a menu that is as diverse as it is popular.
“I’ve taken a lot of the things I’ve seen and brought them” to Soul of the Sea seafood restaurant on North Main Street in Danville.
The name “Soul of the Sea” is no accident. Opened in spring of 2021, the eatery is a mixture of traditional soul Continued to Page 14

food combined with seafood and other home-cooked fare. Williams is no stranger to any of those. His father also managed King of the Sea on Memorial Avenue, which partly inspired the name of Soul of the Sea. “I took a piece of it and merged it (with my own ideas),” Williams said. After spending nine years in the military, then getting his degree from St. Leo University in Florida, Williams needed a plan—literally. He relied on his uncle, Bobby James, who runs Seafood & More on South Main Street, for more inspiration. Williams said his father told him that, “If I didn’t listen to anything else he says,” he needed to set up shop in the same way James had done. “He told me to take his idea and run with it.” It wasn’t easy, nor was it a quick process. “I did research on business plans, (and) it took a good year and a half to two years to find a location,” he added. Williams said he had a general idea where he wanted to
be, and after seeing the amount of traffic on North Main Street, “it just clicked,” he said. Another reason Williams chose the North Main Street location, he said, was because he “wanted to give back to the community” and provide a business that was welcoming and warm. “I wanted to give people something to look forward to,” he said. “We’re here to serve the community.” That means combining every facet to give the customer the best experience possible. “The ambiance, the scenery inside—we have to continue to strive for excellence,” Williams said. “You also have to give customers memorable flavors and great customer service to that ensure they keep coming back. That also comes from having a passion for excellence.” “If it’s not cooked with love, you can tell. If you didn’t take your time, you can tell.” Most of the credit for this belongs to his manager, Dedrick Rodgers, who helped design the interior, and staff of seven employees, Williams noted. In addition to a variety of seafood dishes and southern favorites like yams, fried chicken, and meat loaf, catering is available. Even with the success of his restaurant business, Williams’ ambitions don’t end there. One future goal he has is to open a skill games cafe in Danville and continue to expand Soul of the Sea. Despite these ambitious plans, Williams said his primary focus is spending time with his family and his daughter, Jadea, and “making sure she’s always tucked in at night.”

FEATURE EVERY GIRL NEEDS A DOG
Every Girl Needs A Dog BY BRANDIE KENDRICK PHOTO BY BRANDIE KENDRICK

very girl needs a dog. It’s science, well, truthfully, I don’t know it if is science, but it should be. I am certain there is some type of study that shows endorphins being released when you see a cute animal. Either way, it is true, EVERY girl needs a dog. I look back on my childhood (thanks to therapy) and the one constant thing I remember was the dogs. Now, I did not live in a house full of random animals. I remember each dog based on the stages of my life. I remember being a young little chubby toddler cuddling our family dog’s new puppies. I remember caring so deeply about animals. Some of my first actual memories involved our family dog. My family shared in my love of animals, and there was always a family dog in our home. Having a dog taught me more than just responsibility, it taught me how to love. Sounds super cliche right? It is completely true, though. Yes, I learned about feeding, walking, bathing, and caring for another being. Which in my young brain was a great distraction from the scary world around me. Having a pet grounded me. I watched my mother’s illness take her in and out of the hospital often. I remember getting off the school bus daily and not knowing if my mother would be home, or if she would be in the hospital. While my anxious baby brain was worried about all the big grown-up things; the one thing I didn’t have to question was if our family dog

“Missy” would be waiting at the door for me. She was every time. It was a constant reminder that I was loved and everything would be okay. Dogs devote their entire lives to loving their owners. For us, they are a small part of our world. For them, we are their entire world. Having a dog taught me to love something other than myself. It helped me feel needed and important. Not only was it a comfort to see our dog standing at the door or sitting on the back of the couch looking out the window each day; she was also a great distraction and a great playmate. So technically, the first family dog I remember didn’t like me. I was a busy toddler when she came around, which made our relationship a little rocky. She didn’t like me, but she loved me. While my mother was certainly her favorite, she still waited for me to get off the bus each afternoon. When a thunderstorm rolled around; she left the comfort of my mother’s lap and found me. Why me? I have no idea, however; she kept me feeling grounded. It wasn’t until I grew up, got married, and moved away from my parents that I understood the absence of not having a dog. Coming home to a quiet house without a four-legged companion was boring. My newlywed heart longed for a dog, but we had very little money and space. After almost a year of marriage, we finally adopted a puppy that was headed to a no-kill shelter in Northern Continued to Page 22

Virginia. We made him the highlight of our entire world. He was our first baby. Charlie had a birthday party. He went on beach trips to the mountains and was the subject of many creative writing assignments. For three years, our entire free time revolved around loving our puppy, and we loved him well. Soon our family grew
and our Charlie was right beside us through all the changes. He helped us welcome both of our beautiful daughters into the world. He was the best, most caring, smartest dog I had ever owned. He was my therapy. My daughters grew up around him. By six months of age, my youngest knew to look around the room for him in the mornings. He helped me greet and wake up our girls every morning for five faithful years. Charlie became my oldest daughter’s therapy. He was her constant. He grounded her. Just like my first family dog grounded me, Charlie helped our oldest find happiness in the silly things in life. He licked her face to make her laugh. He would also hide from her when she was having a toddler tantrum (sometimes I hid too). Charlie wore his expressions through his eyes and was more human than dog. When the doctors told us he wasn’t well, I stayed up that night crying. He sat beside me and licked my tears away. He didn’t know I was crying over him. Charlie just knew his human needed him. This relationship is exactly why every girl needs a dog. When Charlie passed, it left a gaping hole in my heart. My daughter, only four, cried ugly tears and felt grief for the very first time. I didn’t know how to help her, because I also felt the deep pain of losing my best friend. My heart told me to never love another dog, it was too painful. My brain told me it was too risky to open up our home to another animal. But I saw the longing in my daughters’ eyes. I heard my then one-year-old call out for her dog and I knew every girl needs a dog. I’ve learned that if you love a dog long enough, you will lose them. It will hurt, but it teaches you that loving is worth the losing. It teaches you that feeling grief just means you once felt love, deep love. So yeah, every girl needs a dog to teach them responsibility and all that good stuff. BUT every girl needs a dog so they can learn to love.

CONFESSIONS OF A 30 SOMETHING
Confessions of a 30 Something
Snow Days BY LEE VOGLER PHOTO BY LEE VOGLER
There’s nothing like a good snow day. We all probably have fond memories of being young and playing in the snow until our face was numb and our fingers wouldn’t move. Just about anyone can enjoy a snow day. You don’t need money or a special setup. As long as you’ve got snow and some time, fun can be had. Yet somewhere along the way, as we get older, we tend to forget that. Snow days aren’t fun anymore. They become an inconvenience. Or at least that’s how we often react. It reminds me of the story in the not-nearly-as-good, Frosty sequel: Frosty Returns. You know, the one with John Goodman voicing Frosty. We let the simple joy of a snow day pass us by. So, this winter I went in with a simple approach: embrace, and enjoy, the snow days. And as of this writing, we’re getting quite a few of them. What does that mean, embrace the snow days?
Certainly, there are things that still need to be done and responsibilities to uphold. However, there are things just out of your control, and you shouldn’t stress too much over them. You get a ton of snow and ice? You’re likely not leaving your house for a day, at least. Don’t stress over it. Find something enjoyable to do while you’re there. Or if you’re dead set on being productive all the time, be productive at your house. I’m sure there is at least one thing you’ve been putting off that needs to be done there. So far this winter, I’ve hunkered down in these snow days and watched Grumpy Old Men (my favorite snowed-in classic), organized my house a little, and, most important of all, had some fun with my family. We’ve built snowmen, had snowball fights, and gone sledding down steep hills. This winter has reminded me that even the simplest things, like a snow day, can bring us a lot of joy.

PAWS FOR A CAUSE
Paws for a Cause Even during Leap Year when February has 29 days, it is still the shortest month of the year. Some people (probably most of them women!) love it because of Valentine’s Day that is just about in the middle of the month. It used to be that one billion Valentine’s Day cards were sent worldwide. With e-mails, social media, and e-cards nowadays, I wonder if that number has decreased. Although the manner of sending messages of love may have changed, some lessons of that day remain constant, and many of the lessons come from animals. The biggest lesson would be that we should not have to have a day set apart as the time we let our loved ones know they are our loved ones. Our companion animals let us know how they feel about us every time they wag their tail, follow us throughout the house, or look at us with adoring eyes. The fortunate humans who have been loved by an animal know that their love is really not based on physical appearance, age, wealth, or status. I have seen pets love people that other people would shun or speak ill of.

We can also learn from animals that true love is not selfish, but is selfless. Of course, we fill our animals’ basic needs, and they appreciate it. Animals, however, do not warn owners of smoke in the house or bark when a stranger approaches because they expect a reward. They give us service out of sheer love. From witnessing the love that my pets have for each other, and seeing the grief they experience when another pet dies, I know that animals have a gift of love that we humans do not always realize that they have. I have been blessed to share my life with a variety of companion animals.
MEET ROSCOE This handsome guy is seven years old. He is a long-haired dachshund and came to us from the owner because neighbors complained about his barking. He needs to be in a home where he will not be alone very much.
Pet ownership is not easy, and really should not be. But, oh, the rewards and life’s lessons learned far outweigh the costs of time, finances, and other resources.
