EDITOR’S LETTER

Just Be Together 2020 has been a challenge. In terms of eyesight, 20/20 is the benchmark for good vision. In the year 2020, we are seeing things more clearly. And it’s not all good. We’re facing tough situations and answering tough questions. But the one definite is we are all in this together and, while it’s downright painful at times, I feel we’re going to greet 2021 with a smile and a new understanding of the world. And hopefully, a lot more love for each other. Probably the most recognized Ram Dass quote is, “We’re all just walking each other home.” Another one I like is, “As we grow in our consciousness, there will be more compassion and more love, and then the barriers between people, between religions, between nations will begin to fall. Yes, we have to beat down the separateness.” Author Jacqueline Woodson took Dass’s walking home quote further when she said, “Diversity is about all of us, and about us having to figure out how to walk through the world together.” The opposite of separateness is togetherness. We must do this together. In this issue, we visit with Collidescope, a LGBTQ+ community that is diverse and welcoming to all allies. As noted by the Collidescope leadership team, the mission is “to celebrate the various colorful, unique, and vibrant spirits” of the LGBTQ+ community. Also, Beth Stinnett gives us “The Perfect MHC Itinerary” just as our communities open back up. Summer is here, and it will differ from any summer we’ve ever experienced. And that just may be what we need right now. I’ll leave you with one more Ram Dass quote that stuck in my mind as I worked on this issue. “Let’s trade in all our judging for appreciating. Let’s lay down our righteousness and just be together.” Together. That will define the second half of 2020. Enjoy the issue.

lthough many of us are staying indoors and limiting our social interactions, this June still marks the third consecutive LGBTQ+ Pride month in Danville, VA since its initial proclamation by Mayor John Gilstrap in June 2018. What started out as a simple 400-person party at Ballad Brewing by some well-intentioned friends, has continued to expand. Collidescope, the group that has coordinated the last two Pride celebrations, also offers fun social events and an extensive list of inclusive businesses, nonprofits, and faith-based allies to benefit the community and its allies all year long. Much like a Kaleidoscope is an instrument consisting of mirrors and pieces of colored material whose reflections produce an endless variety of patterns, Collidescope’s goal is to celebrate the various colorful, unique, and vibrant spirits that the LGBTQ+ community contributes. Protecting and supporting the health and wellbeing of this community is imperative to the success and growth of equity and inclusion in the region. We were excited to have the chance to share a bit about Collidescope in this issue of Showcase, and we hope this encourages more friendly faces to join us at future events. Please enjoy learning more about the LGBTQ+ community. Sincerely, Sierra Petty, Member of Collidescope Leadership Team Maureen Belko, Co-founder of Collidescope

Collidescope in the community

“How many people can say that change started at their door? We hear about organizations and businesses that started in garages and basements, and that’s how Collidescope started. On a porch. More specifically, 8 SHOWCASE Magazine |

it started on my porch. It started when those I hold near and dear to my heart felt they weren’t being openly accepted and visible in a community that touts its diversity and inclusivity. Society, as a Abby Karavanic whole, puts far too much emphasis and weight on labels, when in reality, those labels are meaningless if the sentiments aren’t accepted and recognized by the community. Heteros are fortunate they don’t have to worry about being seen because their norm has gone unchanged for centuries. How novel it is to be openly accepted for who you are. The Collidescope community is diverse and varying. They are proud of who and what they are. They’re not striving to diminish your light, but rather to brighten theirs. How can anyone not support that? How can anyone take issue with that? Danville, they see you… now, it’s our turn to see them.” - Abby Karavanic, Member of Collidescope Leadership Team “No one wants to feel alone. Collidescope makes sure people who may have been shunned by others know we are a community and we are in this together.” -Liz Cervantes, Co-founder of Collidescope

Liz Cervantes

“During this pandemic, I think we have all seen exactly how important it is to be a part of a community. Sitting at home, we miss being together and being a part of the community at large. Belonging is Scott Jones a natural human desire, and Collidescope’s goal is to make sure everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, has a group they can feel they belong to without fear of judgment. Everyone is loved for who they are, and everyone is welcomed.” -Scott Jones, Member of Collidescope Leadership Team “My favorite experience volunteering with the Collidescope team was the Pride Party weekend at Ballad Brewing last year. We had so much fun and love involved in everything we did. The crowds Sierra Petty in Ballad were the most joyful I have seen in Danville and I can’t wait to help again!” -Sierra Petty, Member of Collidescope Leadership Team “In order for a community to function at its peak level, it should/ must acknowledge, hear and listen to all of its residents. Collidescope gives us, the LGBTQ+ community in the Dan River Region, an opportunity to be Bryan Price visible, represented and heard. I am so pleased at the efforts made through Pride Month, Bingo and Trivia Nights, Juneteenth

Celebration and other events that let us know that we are integral and valued members of the community, while also conveying that same message to the greater community at-large. Thank you, Collidescope. I’m happy that you are here and look forward to the organization’s future growth.” -Bryan Price, Outreach and Education Specialist, University of Virginia Cancer Center, Research and Outreach Office “As a transwoman growing up in Danville, I rarely ever felt comfortable being myself. Collidescope’s 2019 Pride event here in town was the first time I had EVER heard of this. I remember this excitement in me. I am no longer in the hateful city of Danville; I am in Danville: the city willing to change. In a time when I really needed to see love, hope, and positive growth in my city, Collidescope showed it to me. Now that I’ve seen what can happen when people come together for a good cause, I want to see what I can do for this city. I look forward to all of Collidescope’s events and want to get myself and others involved with what they are doing.” -Madeline Crews, Middle Border Forward Fellow “Moving to Atlanta in 1991 allowed me to experience life outside of the city limits of Danville. I was a sponge, soaking up the diversity in people, food, culture, and experiences. My 10 years there led to lifelong friends, many of whom are members of the LGBTQ+ community. I witnessed their struggles, just as I did with my own family members who are gay. I grew to be an advocate and a champion for LGBTQ+ rights. In 2017, when I heard about the formation of Collidescope, a newly formed group of courageous people bringing awareness of the LGBTQ+ community right here in Danville, I was excited that I could once again become involved in this effort in my own hometown. Collidescope is not a political group, but a passionate group of people who promote and practice inclusion and diversity for ALL people. I encourage you to learn for yourself by attending one of their fun-filled events. I am a friend. I am an ally. I am straight, but not narrow.” -Anne Moore-Sparks, Community Outreach & Business Partnership Specialist, Director, Danville Public Schools Education Foundation, Danville Public Schools “Everyone deserves to feel at ‘home.’ This is what I was reminded of growing up every time I looked at our “Home” sign atop of the Dan River Mills. For such a long time Danville didn’t feel like that. Confederate Continued to Page 10 Help Showcase and Evince survive https://bit.ly/2zf6MNO

Meet Collidescope Leadership Team Member, Marcellous Reeves I was born in Danville, Virginia in the summer of ‘86 and from the start everyone said I was special. Growing up had its challenges, but overall, I had a great childhood and parents who really wanted to nurture my gifts and talents. After graduating high school, I found myself in a great career in the health field which led me to Houston, Texas where I lived off and on for about five years. Once back in Danville full time I settled into an Marcellous Reeves unlikely job in public education that combined my passion for education, youth, and mental health. Now, at thirty-three, I am finally finding my place in Danville and helping to shape it into the place I’ve always dreamed it could be. What drives you to be involved in the community? Being brought up in Danville, I saw a lot of disconnection in the community at a very early age and did not know why. At eight-years old you don’t quite understand why you can’t associate with certain people or go to certain places. I started to develop the mindset that a lot of people from here grew, “I’m leaving Danville and never coming back.” But truthfully, after moving to Houston, Texas I learned a lot and saw a lot of things I truly believed my hometown could benefit from and somehow I migrated back to my roots to eventually shape the future of the city I called home. What would your perfect Danville look like for the LGBTQ+ community? My perfect Danville would have more inclusive, safe spaces and also have more “go-to” agencies for important 10 SHOWCASE Magazine |

issues that directly impact members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially of those that aren’t as financially sound and/or of racial minority groups. Why is it so important for everyone to be an ally for the LGBTQ+ community? I believe it is important for everyone to be an ally for the LGBTQ+ community because it will remind us, and others of our similarities rather than our differences and it will also remind us that we are all in this thing called life together. Every person is a resource. They come with gifts, talents and abilities that the community at large needs regardless of sexual orientation. The community should not lack because of ignorance or bigotry. Where are your safe spaces in the city? My safe space in the community includes the church, ironically. It is a place where I feel safe and most honest. While every church is different, I feel my church focuses on the principles of love and understanding even when not in agreement.

Meet Collidescope Leadership Team Member, Kei Pittrell I’m a 33-year-old fashion, graphic designer, and a proud black transwoman. What drives you to be involved in the community? Representation!! Duh. What would your perfect Danville look like for the LGBTQ+ Kei Pittrell community? A place where people can be themselves (in the confines of the law) without bigotry. A place with open minds and an open heart. Why is it so important for everyone to be an ally for the LGBTQ+ community? Have they never partied with the LGBT? I feel so sorry for people who don’t interact with others from this community. Like, the BEST people. Where are your safe spaces in the city? 2 Witches and Ballad Brewing! There’s no time for bigotry when beer and music is involved, honestly. Keep watching showcasemagazine.com through June for more exclusive Collidescope content.

PAWS FOR A CAUSE

Paws for a Cause Our father died in January 1996, and we still think about him all the time and miss him terribly. Father’s Day has become an especially poignant day for us. Daddy was the provider and protector of our family. He was an Army sergeant who served his country and family with honor. Human society suffers when men abdicate their responsibilities as fathers.

WRITTEN BY PAULETTE DEAN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DANVILLE HUMANE SOCIETY

I love seeing posts on social media about honorable fathers taking care of their children. I wish all of society still respected fatherhood, and I wish all men took their responsibilities seriously.

MEET LITTLE BIT

Generally in the animal kingdom, the males of the species do not help raise the young. There are some notable exceptions; for example, penguins, lions, seahorses, ostriches, beavers, some other species of birds, and even some insects. In most of these cases, the male’s role is one of protection; even some bullfrogs protect the tadpoles. If you spend time on the Riverwalk or if you drive on some Danville streets that are near

hatch, he is watchful, and looks for any enemy or threat to his family. It is a foolish person who would attempt to approach a gosling when a father is nearby. Penguin fathers are the ones who incubate the eggs, losing about one-third of their body weight as they faithfully discharge their duty of keeping the eggs warm in a frigid climate.

the river, you have probably noticed pairs of Canada geese. One may have been sitting down or eating, with one standing nearby, watching. Canada geese mate for life, and during spring and early summer, they join most other species of animals in the desire to breed. The one Canada goose that is watching over the sitting mate is usually the male. Later, when eggs

Lion fathers keep a watchful eye over the cubs in the pride, even if they are not the father. Male elephants are also well-known for helping young elephants learn how to be elephants. Beavers join Canada geese and other animals in mating for life, and in teaching their young how to survive. I was so blessed to have a father who did all these things in his family—he kept a watchful eye, kept out the evil parts of society, took care of our physical and emotional needs, and was a true Daddy. We need more true daddies in human society.
