I have similar memories from my first experience with racing. In 1983, my family took a trip to Florida for the Daytona 500. I was not much of a race fan. The 500 changed that. I was twelve. We were also going to Disney World and Epcot. It’s Disney. What can compete with that to a kid?

EDITOR’S

Racing has provided these types of memories for millions of fans. We are lucky to have a top-notch racing facility in our neck of the woods. Virginia International Raceway (VIR) has established itself as one of the best places for racing in the world. And now, it’s bringing the rock. This month, VIR will be home to the Blue Ridge Rock Fest (BRRF). It’s fitting that one of the best racing experiences is partnering with one of the best rock festivals in the United States. Hundreds of the biggest names in rock music will be here to entertain fans for four Anddays.surely, provide memories that will last a lifetime. For that, VIR and BRRF, we salute you. Last September, I talked about my first rock concert, Van Halen, on the 1984 tour. The memories from that show remain with me today. I never saw Van Halen live again. But I’m very grateful that I watched Eddie Van Halen play in person.

I remember nothing about Epcot from that trip. I barely remember Disney World. Once you’ve seen The Country Bear Jamboree, you will never forget it. But I remember the thrills of watching racecars circling the track and jockeying for position. I remember the wreck that sent Darrell Waltrip to the hospital with a concussion. And I remember Cale Yarborough crossing the finish line first. But the thing I remember most was the excitement that never left my family’s faces as we watched the race. It’s a bittersweet memory for me. A year later, I lost my grandfather. I will never forget the smile that widened across his face when his “driver” won the 500.

1. Cooler weather. I love the summer sun and the heat does wonders for my tired bones, but something about a slight breeze makes my heart happy. This past summer, the heat was brutal. I was halfway convinced I would see Satan himself in cut-off jean shorts walking down Main Street. It was THAT hot. There were also a few nights our family had to sleep without AC. If anything will have you longing for a cool fall breeze, no AC in the dead of summer, sleeping upstairs in an older home will.

Pumpkin Spice and All Things Autumn are Nice.

16 SHOWCASE Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2022 | www.showcasemagazine.com S FEATURE PUMPKIN SPICE AND ALL THINGS AUTUMN ARE NICE

chool is officially back in session, and the summer of 2022 is slowly ending. The start of school brings thoughts of autumn leaves and cozy scarfs. That’s right, fall is coming. I am no pumpkin spice connoisseur. But I enjoy a nice warm coffee on a brisk fall day. I feel like the change in the season does something for my brain. It feels almost like a mental reset button is pushed, and I can take a small breath of fresh air. Maybe it is because it isn’t 1000 degrees outside, and I can physically breathe easier. I am not sure if it’s the idea of all the yummy food at Thanksgiving or the idea of cuddling up by our fireplace, but I feel there is something special about the fall. All the thoughts of cooler weather and the seasons changing have my mind thinking about why so many people love the fall season. So, in true (Pickled Proverbs) fashion, I made a list of why I feel everyone loves autumn.

2. Comfy clothes. I don’t know about you, but stuffing myself into a bathing suit and keeping these legs shaved is just exhausting. You can call me lazy if you would like, but I enjoy less shaving and more layers of clothes. Something about a baggy sweater and a cute pair of boots just puts a smile on my face. And I love a good pair of leggings. Fall is my fashion season.

I look my best during that time. It’s true. It is why the hubby and I got married in October. We knew it was the best time for us both. I even asked my husband why he thought everyone seems to love autumn, and his first response was comfy clothes. It’s unanimous.

4. The gatherings. My family has at least 10 birthdays to celebrate. This means we get to come together often throughout this season. It is busy, but it is fun.

Don’t forget to follow me for more sweet and sour truths of life and motherhood at www.pickledproverbs.com https:// www.facebook.com/pickledproverbs

Let’s not forget the fire pit s’mores and cornhole. I enjoy hanging out with all my favorite people. This fills up my social cup and brings me joy. I think between the birthday celebrations and all the holidays; it steals my brain away from the grind of working three jobs, paying all the bills, and just being an adult. My hubby said that I had to include football. I agree that gathering to watch a football game is nice. Mainly because I like to laugh at how seriously my husband takes the whole game. So, we can add football to the list.

The season ends with all the sweet and savory holiday mornings. Forget hot dogs with chili and slaw. Give me all the honey-baked ham and collard greens, please! Let’s also not forget this food journey ends with a pop. Literally, we celebrate the old year and start the new year off with the pop of bubbly champagne. This is one of the best seasons for eating. Danville does food in the fall well. Maybe this is also why I enjoy the baggy clothes because we all know the pounds find a way around our waist, but in my humble opinion; it is worth every bite!

5. Mindset shift. As my dear sister, Monica said, “I think fall is synonymous with comfort. There is just an undercurrent of good, pleasing, comforting things to look forward to.” I think the idea of being comfortable while reflecting on the year resets our brain. It turns my anxious mind from the grind of day-to-day striving and helps me look at the bigger picture. Nothing can reset my brain like looking at last year’s Thanksgiving pictures and seeing my girls get older. Nothing helps me value time more than sitting at the holiday table and looking for those missing loved ones. In the autumn, I turn inward. I focus on all the good that has happened in my life. I believe I am not the only one that does this. During this season of change, I believe it is in our genes to appreciate what we have. Many of us come from a proud line of hardworking farmers whom all took the time to appreciate the harvest. So, while I am a long way away from growing, hunting, or gathering my own food; I think my body knows that it is important to express gratitude during the fall. I think we can all somewhat agree, autumn is likely the best season. I may not be one of those pumpkin spice latte lovers that squeal with excitement over a $7 coffee, but I enjoy the beauty that comes with the changing of the season. Also, I realize that while you are reading this, it may still be a billion degrees outside. However, I hope you take just a split second to get excited about the fall weather, comfy clothes, and, of course, yummy food.

3. Yummy food. Foodies unite. It is our time to get to business. We begin this amazing journey of harvesting perfect veggies, and then we slide into an array of lattes (shout out to the pumpkin spice lovers). We take a slight turn down Turkey Lane, and then we land beautifully in the land of peppermint.

Teddy had been sent to his new home with a teddy bear he cuddled with all of his life. The Williams have a desire to send dogs and cats adopted from us home with a teddy bear. In their own words: “The Teddy Bear Fund is established in memory and to honor Teddy Bear, the beloved Golden Retriever who leaves behind his loving and heartbroken parents, Girard and Judith Williams—as well as his younger brother and sister. This fund will ensure that every dog or cat adopted will be gifted their very own teddy bear to carry with them to love and cherish as they begin their new life with their forever family.”

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by Girard and Judith Williams who are grieving the loss of their beloved Teddy, an eight-year-old dog who had blessed their lives since he was a puppy. They wanted to memorialize Teddy in some way while helping shelter animals. After a great deal of thought, they asked about establishing the Teddy Bear Fund. We thought their idea was a wonderful Teddyone. had a sad beginning to life. A man who thought she was a coyote shot and killed his mother. later, I had walked to the edge of the trees he had mentioned. Beyond the recently cut lawn, there were briars and weeds and scrub pines. Since I was in shorts and tennis shoes, I was careful as I entered.

Even if I had been dressed to explore the overgrown property, I wouldn’t have been able to take many pictures. So much of it was completely hidden.

Surprised by that, I studied his face more closely, but I still didn’t recognize him. His long beard covered too much of his face. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our brief Minutesreunion.

“Luna Lake was a mecca of entertainment, a place where you could have a vacation in a day. It was an oasis.” Ray ThenHayes.I was handed a map that directed me to Luna Lake. From my friends’ home, the Lake was less than ten minutes away. At least it should have been. According to the map, I knew I was on the right route that had led me to the right street, appropriately named Luna Lake Road. Miles later, I was at the end of the road. I didn’t see Luna Lake. I turned around, drove slowly, looked for someone in their front yard, someone who could give me directions. Moments later, I slowed and stopped next to the driveway of a friendly, bearded man who walked toward my car. In advance, I thanked him for helping me find Luna Lake. Then, he did just that. “If you go down there, to a clearing on the right, you’ll see a pile of stones at the corner, just before you can make a right turn,” he said. “Those stones mark the corner of the property. Just behind all the grass that has been cut, you’ll see lots of trees.”

I knew exactly what he was talking about. I’d passed that area at least two times. He continued. “The owner let all those trees grow to hide what was left of the old pool. It’s still there.”

I was frustrated. An hour before I dropped by my friend’s house, I had tried to find a relic from Danville’s past, Luna Lake. Although I thought I knew where it was and how to get there since I’d driven to the site less than ten years ago, I was surprised that I couldn’t find it.

Less than ten feet away, I saw the remains of the top of the concrete wall that had been the edge of the border of the Luna Lake pool.

The property owner had purposely let nature take over because he wanted to keep children from playing in the remnants of what had been Luna Lake.

Knowing my friends to be bona fide sleuths, I asked for their help. Within minutes, they provided me with a newspaper article from thirty years ago. That article had an interesting attribution as well as a quote from one of Danville’s most popular radio personalities:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, I’m not talking about Christmas, though I look forward to the Santa season each year. I’m talking about kids going back to school. If you’re a parent, you know the hidden joy you feel when your kids head back to institutions of learning for eight hours each day, rather than ransacking your house. To be sure, it’s always a little bittersweet when they go back.

CONFESSIONS OF A 30 SOMETHING

Admittedly, I miss being able to call during the day to check on them, or have them with me. On the other hand, I don’t miss trying to figure out how to balance childcare every day when my wife and I both work full time (and then some) jobs. Thankfully for us, my mom has always been a big help with that. of preschool. I know every parent says this, but it’s amazing to me how quickly my kids are growing up. Our experience with Kingston at Forest Hills in Danville Public Schools has been a great one, just as Ava has enjoyed the Wee Center like her brother and father before her. I’m thankful for that. As a parent, you want your kids to have the best educational opportunities possible. So as summer comes to a close and the thin fall air creeps in, I hope all of you parents out there have a great school year with your kids. Be involved. Ask them each day what they did at school. What they had for lunch. What they are working on next. It might not seem like a lot, but it makes a big difference. The more you show them you care about their
