F RO M T HE e d i tor “Help make Christmas special for everyone.” That’s the slogan for this year’s Showcase Magazine holiday donation drive. Holidays bring happiness, but not for all. This year make a conscious effort to spread the happiness. Smiles are contagious.

While holidays are a time for joy, for some, holidays magnify sadness and loneliness. The best gift that you can give someone who is down during the holidays is a sign that you care. A call, a visit, a simple card to let them know you’re thinking about them. This goes for strangers as well. Angel Trees and donation drives are wonderful opportunities to help during the holiday season. Our drive, boxes are available at all Carter Bank and Trust, URW Federal Community Credit Union, Piedmont Credit Union, and Beacon Credit Union locations, will supply the Boys and Girls Club of Danville and the Salvation Army of Danville

with non-perishables and toys to distribute during the holidays. Angel Trees are available at The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research and Salvation Army. If I missed any, send me an email at paul@ showcasemagazine.com and I’ll be sure they are mentioned through social media. This holiday season take a little time and share holiday wishes at a senior center. Visit Paulette at the Danville Humane Society and play with the kitties or volunteer to take dogs for a walk. Pets love holidays too. Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Give everyone that you come in contact with a warm, happy feeling this holiday season. Your life (and theirs) will be better for it. Enjoy the issue.

Well, I have finally reached the weight where I can officially call myself your “Big Fat Santa.” I mean who wouldn’t want to have their own personal Santa. I have never seen my weight blossom like it did this year. My clothes don’t fit and my hair is balding, but you still don’t hear me complaining, do you?

She Said... Christmas to you is no exception is it? You still want something for nothing and you’re expecting me to get it for you. As your Mrs. Claus, I’m here to tell you that you have NOT been good this year. As a matter of fact, you have been downright ornery and yes, you have let yourself go physically to the point where you actually could be my Santa Claus.

I am still jolly. I am still good natured. I’m an expert at bringing you goodies. So, I guess that is all the requirements needed to be a good Santa. I know I am like this all of the year but the holidays, Christmas especially, seems to be the right time for me to play this role.

Now, before you start asking me a bunch of questions about gifts this year, I want you to remember the old adage that Christmas is not just about giving presents, because in my case I like receiving them. However, I am sure you will get a present if you have been a good little girl. From all the people I talk to, you have been more than good, you have been great. In my little red book you have been the most beautiful reindeer of all. Now that I have finished buttering you up, we might as well talk about what you should give me for Christmas. Tell you what I am going to do. Since you like surprises so much I am going to just let you surprise me this year with my gift. It is the least I can do with you being voted favorite reindeer and all.

Do I need a bearded old man in my life with a red suit on, sitting on a sleigh pulled by reindeer this December? Probably not. Not unless this Santa had a bag full of diamonds, candy, and jewelry. Then maybe, just maybe, I could put up with some shenanigans for a few days. I can’t make you diet. I can’t make you slim. I can’t make you less ornery, I can’t make you younger. I can’t make you exercise for your own health benefits. What I can do is stay at work late, leave the house early, stay on facebook when I am at home, eat a less fattening diet, exercise on my elliptical, in other words keep myself in shape without worrying about you and your size 72 pants. No, if there is one thing that I would like for this year besides peace, quiet, and understanding, it would be for my favorite Santa to take better care of himself, health-wise. That way you would be around for years to come so you can deliver more presents. If you want to make this girl happy--listen clearly, behave rationally, quit eating the wrong food, lose weight, write only good things about me, and clean up after yourself. Merry Christmas, Sweetheart! SM

The Truth about Debt Consolidation

financial

People have debts with many creditors and at varying interest rates. Debt consolidation may save you a great deal of money if you are willing to become a true master of the art and science of managing money. Realistically, there is NO magic formula to get rid of debt. Check the debts you owe: credit cards, auto purchases, and finance companies. Remember that loan charges may vary from year to year among financial institutions.

Todd Boaze

Money management tips, small business strategies and a variety of other financial concepts. Facts and information contained is not intended to provide specific legal, financial or tax advice, or any other advice for any individual or company and should not be relied upon in that regard.

Interest on auto loans is known to vary as much as 10 percent. Finance companies often charge much higher rates than banks and credit unions. Credit cards and department store accounts can be insidious ways of incurring additional debt. That is, unless you use them properly. In regards to challenging your every belief, it is a fact of the modern financial system that loans generally incur higher interest rates. For example, let’s say Ford Motor Company goes to your bank. The company pays interest that is a fraction over the prime rate, which is the lowest rate banks charge their favorite customers. You, for sure, are paying several points over the prime. You may not be able to change the fact the bank gives Ford a better interest rate than it gives you. But you can control, to some degree, the interest rate you pay based on the amount of money you borrow. Look at the interest schedules on your credit card bills. You will see information that tells you something like this: On the balance up to

10 Showcase Magazine

| December 2013 | www.showcasemagazine.com

$2,000, the finance charge is 18 percent annually, while on the balance over $2,000, you pay 12 percent. Remember, these numbers are generalized. You may owe $2,000 or more in credit card bills, but if that debt is spread over several cards with low but lingering balances, you are paying the 18 percent on every penny. And if you pay the minimum amount due to each creditor every month, you will carry 18 percent until all balances go to zero. Mastering a debt-free plan can be achieved by strategically refinancing your debt. In fact, you can renegotiate and finance smaller loans as well as larger ones. However, be careful. Make sure you can benefit from the refinancing before you renegotiate. Suppose you have an auto loan at 10 percent, and your bank is willing to lend you the money to pay it off at 7 percent. Sounds like a good deal, right? Well, maybe. If a big part of the loan has been paid off, refinancing may not be worthwhile because the new debt is usually paid off over a longer period of time and will ultimately cost more. General Rule of Thumb:The more recently the loan was made, the better chance refinancing has to work for you. Get out the papers; go to your accounts online, look at your loans today. Look to see if you can make some changes that will get your money in motion, working for you. Happy Holidays! SM

Recapture the Christmas Spirit: Mixing technology with tradition

feature

Paul Seiple

One of the most important draws to technology is its ability to make lives easier. The million-dollar question is now the “Give me two seconds to Google the answer.” No longer do you have to wait for the record store, scratch that, department store to open to buy an album by your favorite band on its release day. Just hope iTunes at midnight and the music is on your computer in less than five minutes. Probably less than two, depending on your Internet connection. Technology is good. But there is a dark side to technology. It’s a pickpocket. And it’s a good one. Technology stole the record store. It’s stealing bookstores. Sure, this can be viewed as evolution. And, honestly, there is nothing we can do about it. We can support the record stores and bookstores, but the force is strong in technology. My friends and I had this tradition in the nineties. Whenever a rock band that we liked was about to release a new album, we would drive to the record store at midnight to be the first to get it. This only worked with the Pearl Jams of the world. The record store wasn’t opening earlier for Sonic Youth. That’s a tradition I loved. A tradition that can only live on in memories. While some things are out of our control, we can save our holiday traditions. And technology can better them.

A Little Less Jolly Christmas has changed throughout the years. It’s not hard to find someone to debate the topic of has Christmas lost its luster. There is only one way to answer that — if it has, it’s your own fault. Christmas is Christmas. The original 1934 version of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” sounds different than Bruce Springsteen’s rendition. But Santa is still coming to town and he knows who’s been naughty and nice. 12 Showcase Magazine

| December 2013 | www.showcasemagazine.com

If Christmas doesn’t have the same meaning it once had to you, it’s because you’ve changed. Maybe you like the change, but if you miss the traditions, you can get them back. Christmas will welcome you home with open arms. And your smartphone can make the memories last a lifetime.

A Memory-Making Machine Say you miss that relative that has too much “eggnog” at Christmas dinner and decides to take a nap right before the exchange of presents. He’s still there, you just missed him because you were too busy trying to clear level 91 of Candy Crush. Make better use of your phone and record of Vine of the sleeping relative. Maybe the video

vine.co

will go viral, but at the very least, you’re supplying entertainment for next Christmas. Social media is the inspiration for many apps that allow you to capture your magic moments and post them online.Vine lets users upload clips of a maximum length of six seconds. No drawn out director’s cut here, just the good stuff. The Polaroid camera is somewhere bragging to the Betamax that it used to be in pictures. Digital is where it’s at these days. From digital cameras to smartphones, photo taking has never been easier. Granted, a SD-card doesn’t have the same pizzazz of shaking film and watching an shutterfly.com image appear. But digital photos are forever. There is no fear of loss or deterioration. It’s the best of both worlds. You can still have prints. Apps such as Shutterfly give you the option of creating prints right from your smartphone. And if you enjoy scrapbooks, you can still make them, but with the added security of knowing you have a backup. Online, there is an option of the never-ending scrapbook. Sites like Flickr give users free storage to host photos. Flickr offers a terabyte of storage for free. That basically equates to 500,000 photos flickr.com from a mobile phone.

The Song Remains the Same It’s hard to think about holiday tradition without hearing yuletide carols being sung by a choir or thinking of chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Music plays a big role in getting into the Christmas spirit. The roots of Christmas caroling date back to the 19th Century. And while caroling is a sure sign that the holiday season is upon us, it’s the classics that take over the airwaves that put people in a jolly mood. This is not a proven fact, so don’t quote me, but I believe road rage drops drastically once the Christmas channels appear on the radio. Nat “King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” and Run D.M.C.’s “Christmas in Hollis” have enough Christmas cheer to turn any Scrooge’s frown upside-down. But technology is changing the way we listen to these holiday traditions. I remember being a kid and listening to Elvis’s Christmas Album over and over again because no one wanted to change the CD. Those days are gone.

Sites such as Spotify provide all the Christmas music you could ever want — for free. The free Spotify account does have commercials. If you want to skip the ads, a subscription is under five dollars a month. Spotify allows uses to create playlists with ease. Gather around with your family and create your own Christmas playlist. A tradition that you can share and add to every year.

A Present for that “Hard to Buy For” Person There is at least one person on everyone’s Christmas list that is impossible to shop for, let subscription services help you. Health Care Reform and You

Are you confused yet? Wow! At the time this article is being written we are almost 2 month’s since the start of the rollout of The Affordable Care Act. I think almost everyone by now has heard about The Affordable Care Act but is probably still extremely confused about what is required. At the present time the individual mandate is still in force and requires all individuals to carry a minimum level of insurance coverage or pay a fine. What this means is that if you do not have a health insurance policy you will need to get one in 2014 or you will have to pay a fine. We have discussed the fines and their amounts in past articles. If you have been watching, reading or listening to the news you have probably heard of all the people that are having their current insurance coverage cancelled. There are many consumers that are extremely upset by this. As early as today, 11-14-13, President Obama announced a regulatory change that states insurance companies can let consumers stay on their current plan into 2014. We are not sure of the short and long term implications of this change, but it seems consumers will like the ability to stay on their current plan.

Another big issue that has been played out in the media is the problem people are having trying to apply on the website www.healthcare.gov. As of today; there still seems to be many problems with the website, making it very difficult for people to actually apply for coverage. If there is one thing I want you to take away from this article, it is that we are certified to sell plans on the healthcare exchange or marketplace. These are the same plans being sold on www.healthcare.gov. We have the ability to determine whether or not you qualify for a subsidy. If you do qualify for one, we have the ability to determine how much it will be. We have the ability to help you apply for a plan today and avoid having to use www.healthcare.gov. Not everyone will qualify for a subsidy, and if you do not qualify for a subsidy, the plans offered on www.healthcare.gov may not be the ones that are most suitable for you. We can show you all options that are available to you. In other words, you can look at the whole menu and decide what works best for you, not just look at half of the menu. If you are confused as most people are, please contact us to set an appointment for a free consultation. We can help you through these issues and help you find what plan works best for you.

Step Three: Don’t Get Choked!

life in the fat lane

This month didn’t yield remarkable results and I want things to move more quickly. What do you recommend to help me get my number down faster? Finding positive ways to cope with stress isn’t easy. When you are used to eating to resolve stress, breaking that habit can seem insurmountable. And if we want to be truly honest with ourselves, we have to admit why. At this stage in my life, food is my only source of comfort. Real talk.

Bobby Allen Roach

I don’t have an inspiring message to share about overcoming that, because it hasn’t happened yet. I struggle every day with my competing interests: lose weight and look good or eat as usual and feel better. At the moment of writing this article, I feel stranded. At some point, I expect to get over that and move forward again. Right now, things are moving too slowly and I feel disappointed. I don’t like watching things happen over a long period of time. I prefer immediate results. That’s unfortunate because, as weight loss goes, it is not a fast process. But

that is discouraging me the most now. My fear is that I am losing time and missing important opportunities because I’m not pushing myself hard enough. From an objective perspective and based on how I feel right now, I believe this is the low point--the bottom a person has to sometimes reach before achieving his or her goal. To launch me into the next phase of my weight loss endeavor, I need your help. Take my photo to every restaurant in town and tell them not to serve me anything that is unhealthy. I’m serious. Cut it out and post it everywhere. One of the reasons I write this column every month is so I will be held accountable for staying on track with my lifestyle goals. I don’t think I’m going to be able to do that without your help. The bottom line is this: I have to make this happen for myself. And it is taking work to do that. I know that if I don’t put more effort into what I am trying to do, it’s never going to happen.

by Paulette Dean Executive Director, Danville Humane Society

Can it really be December? This year has been a difficult one, so I am not really sorry that the end is in sight. As difficult as 2013 has been, we have had some very bright spots. We are very grateful for the shelter volunteers who faithfully come to bathe puppies and dogs, socialize kittens, and provide playtime for the animals. A happy, well-socialized animal is much easier to find a home for than one who is scared or unfriendly. We also receive each monetary gift with gratitude. Although we receive taxpayer money to operate the shelter, we heavily subsidize the shelter operations with donations. We also rely on donations and grants to support our cruelty investigations, humane programs, spay/neuter assistance, rescue efforts, and all of our outreach programs. We are very thankful when we open the door to the countless people throughout the year who bring gently-used towels and wash clothes, bleach, paper towels, and toys and treats for all kinds of animals. The animal shelter can always use those items. We appreciate the good folks at the Virginia Beach SPCA who accept hundreds of our dogs each year, and then find them homes. The people who serve on our fundraising committee spend many, many hours planning events and other fundraising efforts. We are immensely grateful to them. Of course, no end-of-year reflection would be complete without feeling immense gratitude for the people who come to the shelter and pledge to love the shelter animals they are adopting. As we contemplate the difficult things of this year, they are overshadowed by the simple, wonderful acts of compassion. SM

Buddy is a great name for this friendly dog. He has it all in a small package -- looks, personality, and sweetness. He is a neutered male long-hair Chihuahua.

A High-Tech Colonial Christmas

feature

Larry G. Aaron Michelle Dalton

The most unique house in Danville this Christmas will be the Colonial Williamsburg home of Ron and Dianne McMahon. Its Christmas decorations bring to mind a bygone era, how that holiday was celebrated in that colonial capital during Virginia’s days as a colony. But it’s what you don’t see that makes the home so unique. Ron Mahon, an electrical engineer, wanted to build a house that was energy efficient. Dianne had always wanted a Williamsburg house, because as she exclaimed, “I love anything colonial.” Despite the fact that colonial-era homes were devoid of air conditioning, insulation, heated

water, electric lights, storm windows, and a host of other modern conveniences, Ron and Dianne have all these and more. But their totally energy efficient Williamsburg home has some unseen technology you probably never heard of. And therein lies the secrets to their house. Ron reasoned, “I can’t create energy, but I can conserve what I use, and yet not sacrifice quality of life in the process.” With energy efficiency in mind, Ron designed, engineered, and with Dianne’s help, built the house from the ground up, doing the electrical, plumbing, cabinetry, and some of the flooring themselves.

Almost everything (85 percent) in the house including furniture, fixtures, and lighting was made in America. And all the furniture is 18th century design as well. Like a colonial home, the McMahon home has candles, except they’re incandescent lights that look like candles, with the difference hardly noticeable. They also use compact fluorescent lights and some LED lights, both true energy savers. The home has triple pane windows consisting of two thermal glass panes with argon glass sealed between them and a third pane which is a storm window that opens inside. They also minimized the number of windows because as Ron emphasized, “Windows cause the most heat lost in a house.” Foam insulation is used throughout because foam traps air and forms a temperature barrier. It’s used under the concrete foundation, in the basement and garage, in the walls, inside the roof, all unseen. “It’s as if we live in a foam igloo,” said Ron. The energy savings is unreal.

www.showcasemagazine.com

| December 2013 | Showcase Magazine 39

The home has no airconditioning ducts, using the new Mini Split air cooling and heating system. The outside unit is able to extract heat from air down to negative 4 degrees. Hence no need for a furnace. All sources of water depend on very flexible hightech plastic tubing, each connected to one valve in the basement. There are no other valves, so the plumbing is an easy fix. And there’s a tankless water heater also. A propane gas unit heats the water as you need it. Ron and Dianne’s Williamsburg home is a complete energy package, also equipped with energy efficient refrigerator, freezer, washer and dryer. So now Dianne can enjoy her Williamsburg Christmas without roughing it like in the old days 200 years ago. Complete with fire logs and their Williamsburg decorations, Ron and her cat Moe will enjoy it too, like no one in the colonies ever did. SM
