WHO WE ARE We are proud to be a family-owned store that has grown from the imagination of Tony, Mabeth and Sherry Grout into one of the largest home furnishings stores on the West Coast today. We have become what we are today because of you, our customers, our neighbors and friends. Because of your loyalty to us and your continued support, we are able to offer an unusual if not unique way to shop for home furnishings. As the company name suggests, the store is housed in a former cannery, where fruit from eastern Washington was packed and canned. And it has other draws besides its historical setting. How many furniture stores have a fudge factory hewn from an ancient tree right in the middle of their store? How many have seven miles of suspended G-scale trains, reminiscent of days gone by, that travel through the showrooms and warehouse? These are just a few of the unique things about The Old Cannery that make it a wonderful place to visit for your furniture needs and for the enjoyment of your entire family. We invite you to come experience it for yourself and become a part of our family, as so many others have done. We want to continue to thank you every time you visit us by offering you a unique experience and great value. We are constantly striving to help make our community a better place to live and shop.

THE PLANK ROAD DINING COLLECTION BY KINCAID Now available at The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse — Kincaid Furniture. For four generations, Kincaid Furniture has been built on a philosophy to make wood furniture in its most natural form, using Solid Wood construction. Kincaid Furniture focuses its efforts and resources on those details that provide the greatest value to the consumer. It uses heirloom quality, English dovetailed drawer construction for long-lasting strength. Kincaid drawers also utilize high quality, precision soft-close drawer glides for the

smoothest drawer operation possible. While several enhancements have been made since Kincaid began in 1946, the company still uses solid wood construction, English dovetails, and hand-rubbed finishes to craft its wood furniture. At Kincaid Furniture, things are made the way they used to be; they may even be a little better.

Fighting Breast Cancer One Step at a Time by

Julie L eydelmeyer

Almost five years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Debra Peterson heard about Come Walk With Me at a Pilates class full of other survivors of the disease. They convinced her to join their team, Ta Ta Warriors, and she’s glad she did. She describes the energy of the walk as a “greatness of spirit.” Jolene LeMay didn’t know how personal her support of Come Walk With Me would become when she offered her students at Sumner High School extra credit for participating. The longtime physical education teacher and coach was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Not long after, her students and colleagues formed a team in her honor. “This is a great event because of the amazing support from the community,” says Michelle LoFaso Sabia, event manager for Come Walk With Me. That support is clearly evident by the blanket of pink that washes across downtown Sumner annually on the first Saturday of October. An estimated 1,500 participants converge outside The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse ready to honor and celebrate those who have fought breast cancer. They are also raising funds to support breast health programs at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital. Last year, donors exceeded the event’s fundraising goal and set a record by bringing in more than $138,000. One hundred percent of these funds stay local, to provide free and reduced-fee services for detection and treatment of breast cancer. Services include mammograms, guidance from a nurse navigator, resource kits, prostheses and wigs, support groups, and disease-specific exercise and nutrition classes.

As the largest breast cancer walk in Pierce County, the Come Walk With Me 5K raises spirits, builds friendships and offers hope. “It’s like being part of a 1,000-person family,” says LoFaso Sabia. Turning the Page to a New Chapter of Life by

Julie L eydelmeyer

Moving into a new chapter of life can be difficult. A successful transition often depends on a helping hand giving you the opportunity to overcome the inevitable hurdles. That’s exactly what NW Furniture Bank does for its clients—and for many of its employees. Joe Goree was encouraged by a friend to apply at NW Furniture Bank when he was at Progress House, a work release program run by Washington State Department of Corrections. After being incarcerated for more than 18 years, Goree was uncertain of his next chapter. Fast-forward a year and a half and you can find him working hard in the warehouse—keeping it organized, accepting donations and loading truckloads of furniture for clients. “The way this organization is run puts a smile on my face,” says Goree. “It feels good to give back and to see people leave with a smile on their faces.” He knows that the opportunity to work at NW Furniture Bank is important for his new beginning and he’s committed to sticking with it. Goree’s story is one of many similar accounts among employees at NW Furniture Bank. The Tacoma-based nonprofit’s primary mission is to help provide basic furnishings for people starting a new chapter. These might be survivors of domestic abuse, people suffering loss from fire and natural disasters, foster children, and especially families coming from transitional housing who are trying to rebuild their lives. At minimum, each client family receives a sofa, dining set and a bed for each person. NW Furniture Bank also has gone a step further by employing individuals who may be overlooked because of

their past. Executive director Bill Lemke is proud that the organization has been able to evolve since he founded it 10 years ago with seed money from The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse. “Helping improve the lives of our 34 employees is as important to me as helping our clients,” he says. “It’s good stuff!” For more information: NW Furniture Bank 117 Puyallup Ave, Tacoma nwfurniturebank.org 253.302.3868

Another Success! Corks and Crush 2018 by

A ndrea L erum

On May 19, supporters of MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup came together at the Washington State Fair Events Center for the 12th annual Corks and Crush gala. Together they raised a total of $863,000 to support programs and services at the hospital. Guests were treated to premier wines from across Washington, Oregon and California. The evening was filled with a live auction, musical entertainment by The Happy Sinners and Baking with Julia, and a phenomenal gourmet dinner.

One hundred percent of the fund-a-need donations will be used to support a new 18-bed Substance Treatment and Recovery Training inpatient unit at Good Samaritan. The START program is designed to provide a compassionate approach to pregnant mothers seeking help from chemical dependency. The intent is to reduce harm to mother and baby and provide critical services in one setting to improve the health of both.

Dr. Amol Shaw & Dr. Sam Song, Isiah & Hollie Sandlin, Justin Basel, Cameron Kontos

On average, Good Samaritan Hospital provides intensive care for three newborn babies per day who suffer from the painful effects of drug withdrawal. We can and we must reduce the number of babies who are born dependent on substances that their mothers have taken by treating the problem head-on. ~MultiCare The START program is desperately needed. The number of women who suffer from alcohol or drug addiction while pregnant is growing exponentially. Good Sam’s program is the only one of its kind in Pierce County and only the fifth in Washington. Thank you to all those who came to support such an important cause. A very special thank you to this year’s event chairs, Dr. Dave and Colleen Crouch and Jeff and Ellen McVicker. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year for another successful and fun event! ‘Greenery’ Is on the Table

Image courtesy of Saleina Marie Photography, table design by Kelly Welk of CiderPress Lane

by

Emily Happy

“Greenery,” Pantone’s color of the year for 2017, offers refreshing options for decorating festive tables. Look for a fresh, verdant green that evokes the first days of spring. “Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute. She says the “life affirming” shade can be paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels and metallics. Wedding planners offer ideas for anyone setting festive tables for friends and family. David Tutera, an expert in wedding and event décor, forecasts ditching shiny gold and silver and instead choosing softer brushed metallics and bright white accents. His ideas span the seasons for home entertaining and easily incorporate greenery. Table decorations using greenery can be dressed up or down. Consider unique or mismatched arrangements if dressing up multiple tables or spaces. Garlands of greenery arranged along the center of the table can be enhanced with matching candles and blossoms for a more formal look. Or forget the flowers.

“Rustic” decorations include the garlands of greenery with rounds of wood—varying heights, bark included— as bases for candles or other thematic objects. Minimalism is OK. Mason jars are on the way out, but interesting bottles can serve as small vases. Greenery centerpieces can be as easy as layering sand, soil and pebbles in glasses and planting a variety of succulents in the containers. Another predicted trend may relate to renewed interest in Cuban culture. Consider using bright tropical colors along with the leafy greens. Think deep purple, turquoise, tangerine, bright coral, yellow and fuchsia for festive tables set indoors or in the garden. Also influencing table-décor trends are these new colors from Design Master: blush, maroon, Pacific blue, champagne gold and “überfrost,” a clear, frosted finish. Local nurseries offer endless floral or plant choices for table décor. Set the table in formal place settings or offer casual dining with utensils in wooden or brushed metallic containers, and prepare to impress!

The Cannery and Sumner Rotary Transform Lives at Home and Abroad by

K elly L enihan

The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse has been a mainstay in the Sumner community for decades. If there is a community event taking place, chances are The Cannery was integral to planning, donating space, sponsoring, or participating in the event. Although The Cannery lends a helping hand to many local charitable groups, its ongoing commitment of support falls right in line with the Sumner Rotary’s own mission: “Care about our community and eagerly seek opportunities to better the lives of those around us.”

Rotary Club of Sumner has been a fixture in the Sumner community for 90 years. To learn more about this community service organization, visit the club any Tuesday at noon and enjoy lunch, fellowship, and service above self at Brank’s BBQ. Brank’s BBQ 13701 24th St East, Sumner rotaryclubofsumner.org

“The Cannery’s support and sponsorship means more than a logo on a sign at a Rotary event: It means a commitment to caring for people here in Sumner and around the world.” ~Carmen Palmer Many people don’t realize the reach Sumner Rotary has both at home and around the world. Here in our community, the club gave a leadership gift to help build the Gordon Family YMCA in Sumner, now enjoyed by over 20,000 members of all ages keeping healthy. At the same time, the “International” part of “Rotary International” is also a key component. The club continues to partner with Team Agape, founded by Sumnerite Sarah Rolfing and her husband, Jamie. In the past that partnership has included building bathrooms for a low-income school in Kenya. Now the project is expanding to funding an offroad Jeep to function as a mobile health clinic to the villages around the town of Magadi in Kenya. As The Old Cannery continues to be a leader in supporting Sumner Rotary and its various events, whether that’s Girls Night Out, the annual gala, or the golf tournament, these are the results of those efforts.

BRAMBLE: VISIONARY PRODUCTS When the Bramble Company first started over 25 years ago, its workshop was cut out of a narrow space in a home garage. The very first pieces of Bramble furniture were designed, finished and assembled there. Back then the company sourced its goods from various suppliers. But it quickly learned that this presented a challenge: It could ever be only as good as its supply chain. It was then that the company decided to take matters into its own hands, literally. Now Bramble manages the entire process from source to creation so that it can be sure that each piece lives up to its vision. The company’s own factory spans over 17 acres. Its team of over 1,500 painters, craftsmen and designers create each Bramble piece from start to finish in this factory. Over time, the Bramble Company has been able to make products that reflect its original vision. That vision still drives its designs today. Bramble has a passion and commitment to create pieces that go above and beyond what is expected and will only get better with age. Bramble furniture is the fruit of a meticulous design process that spares no detail. brambleco.com

Salute to the Troops—Operation Turkey Drop by

A ndrea L erum

Local military personnel are more than service members. They are our neighbors, friends, family and community members. That’s why the Old Cannery has a long tradition of supporting our region’s troops. Each year, the Cannery helps raise funds for several local events to honor service members and their families. Salute to the Troops, an event held each summer for military and civilian families alike, allows the communities of Puyallup to gather and show their support for the local military. The Capt. Meriwether Lewis Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, or AUSA, organizes these events, working closely with the Cannery. Funds raised throughout the year by the Cannery help support projects at Joint Base Lewis-McChord facilitated by the AUSA. The largest annual events occur during the holidays: Operation Turkey Drop in November and Operation Ham Grenade in December. For over nine years, the Cannery, with the help of the community, has ensured that junior-enlisted military families (active duty, reserve and National Guard) receive a Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas ham. Last year, over 1,200 turkeys were delivered across JBLM and Camp Murray during Operation Turkey Drop. In addition to generous fundraising, the Cannery assists with delivery by providing a truck and a team of volunteers.

44 OLDCANNERYFURNITURE.COM

Cannery employee Dave Radcliffe has volunteered as the truck driver at both events since they began. “Dave and his team have been with us since we started these two programs nine years ago,” says Carlene Joseph, treasurer of the Capt. Meriwether Lewis Chapter. “We could not do this without their generosity and help.” Operation Turkey Drop will take place on Nov. 15 and Operation Ham Grenade on Dec. 15. For more information on how you can get involved with AUSA, please visit the Facebook page of the Capt. Meriwether Lewis Chapter.

Craft Your Ambiance With New Home Decor Trends by

Emily Happy

Have you ever walked into a space and felt immediately at home? Comfortable? Enveloped in mood and character? Welcome home to an essential interior trend: homecoming. Take note of textures, colors and patterns that bring you joy. Seeking invigoration? What colors and patterns energize you? Chasing relaxation? Select furnishings and accessories that soothe you. With you and your favorites as a touchstone, let’s explore five new trends to transform your home and the ambiance you create.

1. Sustainability

Composing a space that uses aesthetically pleasing materials is a natural, and so is doing it with natural materials. Sustainably harvested, recyclable, reclaimed, eco-friendly—the buzzwords are out there, and for good reason. In the outdoor-loving Northwest, harmony with nature is a popular value to incorporate into our homes.

3. Statement Ceilings

Forget accent walls. Bring on the statement ceilings. Give your ceilings some love with wallpaper or paint, and create a unique surprise that’s above the norm.

4. Retro

From ’60s Bohemian to the glittery ’70s, retro continues to inspire. It’s a bold, confident vibe with era-specific shapes and textures. Select a few strong pieces that carry a distinct feel, and remember the unique lamp and lighting options.

5. Multifunctionality

Busy lives require flexibility and innovation. Why not expect the same from our furniture? Brought to the fore with the rising popularity of tiny homes, multifunctionality is also simply about thoughtful design that fits into dynamic lifestyles. A stool that’s also a side table that’s also a tray? And oh, they also stack together? Yes, please!

2. Soft and Rich

Find luxury in soft seating arrangements. Sofas, armchairs and ottomans are coming oversized, rounded and velvety. Combine with marble, glass or metals like brass, copper, silver and gold for an aristocratic look.

48 OLDCANNERYFURNITURE.COM

Trends are sources of inspiration and exploration. But what makes your interior unique is you! Mix and layer textiles, patterns and colors that speak to you, and you’ll love the feeling of coming home.

Boush Moving and Storage— Peace of Mind Delivered by

A ndrea L erum

Anyone who has ever shopped for furniture knows how stressful it can be. From choosing color and fabric to ensuring that measurements are correct, there is much to consider. You don’t want to have to fret about delivery. You can’t exactly fit an eight-piece dining room set and wraparound sofa in the back of an SUV. Even if you could, the prospect of getting the pieces into your home without serious damage looms large. For customers of the Old Cannery, however, delivery of their beloved new furniture is the last thing on their minds. When receiving their furniture delivery, customers are greeted warmly and their home is prepped as if for a full move, before the new furniture is even taken off the truck. Haul-away service for old furniture is also available. Boush Moving and Storage has provided delivery services for Old Cannery Furniture customers for about seven years, but their shared history goes back much further. Located in downtown Puyallup, Boush has been in business since 1919 in the Puyallup community. Boush and the Cannery began working together in the mid-1900s when R.F. Boush would haul produce from the Puyallup Valley to the Cannery when it was in the business of canning. Since then, Boush has grown and the relationship with the Cannery has endured. It is a relationship the two companies hope will continue for generations to come. “We provide our customers with first-rate service. We want them to enjoy the experience,” says Bruce Ellis,
