The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection The Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) proudly brings the national award-winning Kinsey African American Art & History Collection to our community this summer. A unique merging of art and history, the public exhibition includes over 150 artifacts spanning from masterful paintings and sculpture, to letters, rare books, photographs and more. Each piece shines a triumphant light on largely unknown works of art and untold stories of Black Americans throughout history to the present day. Running from July 31 to November 28, 2021, the collection offers a more balanced and inclusive narrative of the American story. The roots of the exhibition were established over 50 years ago, as Bernard and Shirley Kinsey traveled the world together in pursuit of cultural exploration, while simultaneously collecting both memories and artwork. Today, the collection continues to thrive and expand with oversight and leadership from their son, Khalil Kinsey, who serves as Chief Curator and General Manager. The Kinseys are true stewards and protectors of historical material and fine art, as their traveling exhibition has toured over 30 U.S. cities and reached more than 15 million people. Their aim, says Khalil, is that after experiencing the collection, “people leave and say – I didn’t know that.” The guiding light of the Kinsey mission is simply sharing information and encouraging visitors to use what

they learn, employ it in their own lives and continue to pass along that information to others. According to Khalil, the collection is their “small contribution to the conversation. And it has been a wonderful journey.” The Kinsey Collection is especially significant for Tacoma and surrounding communities because it is the first presentation in the Pacific Northwest. TAM’s Executive Director, David Setford shares, “We are lucky to have this collection at the museum. It is an opportunity for people to learn together . . . and to learn the truth about this untold history.” The TAM is excited to help shape and showcase an exhibition that dives deeper into the shared human experience and fosters new conversations and dialogue amongst community members. The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection is the embodiment of black excellence, and its contents challenge us to examine and acknowledge truths surrounding the generations of adversity Africans Americans faced in route to celebrating their artistry and contributions to this nation and beyond. vAMANDA MOORE

CARES Act Funding for Local Students was to cover expenses that affect a student’s ability to stay in college and complete their education. One of those students was Jenae McCabe, a Tacoma native and student at Bates who enrolled in March 2020 just as the stay-at-home orders were put in place. According to McCabe, “I enrolled in Bates to improve my employment opportunities. I want to support myself and my 11-year old daughter through a job that allows me regular hours and a lifestyle where I’m not living paycheck to paycheck.” Slated to graduate in June 2021 with an Associate Degree in Applied Science, McCabe had taken out a loan to assist her through her first two quarters. “When I heard from my co-workers that I was eligible for the HEERF grant, I knew I could stay and complete my degree,” she said. FIRST OF ITS KIND: Maritime Heritage Area When Alexandra Gradwohl and others at the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation received word that the long campaign for a Maritime Washington National Heritage Area had been granted by the US Congress, they were elated, if not a bit surprised. You see, this was the first designation of a new National Heritage Area in more than a decade. The 10 year+ process was rewarded with the designation as the first, and to date, only heritage area dedicated solely to Maritime Heritage. So, it’s a BIG deal. The designation by Congress encompasses 3,000 miles of Washington State’s saltwater coastline – from Grays Harbor County to the Canadian border. Included in the area are 18 federally recognized tribes, 13 counties, 32 incorporated cities and 30 port districts, as well as innumerable harbors, inlets, peninsulas, island shores and parks. Throughout 2021, the Washington Trust will work with communities to develop an operational plan for the newly established Heritage Area. According to Gradwohl, “Our planning efforts and Steering Committee are bringing together various organizations and people within this area and through this, we’re creating a region-wide network with the common thread of water. We are learning exponentially from each other.” One steering committee member is Monique Valenzuela, Executive Director of the Youth Marine Foundation, home of the Tacoma Sea Scout Base. Founded in 1923, the Sea Scouts have continuously implemented programs so local youth can experience the water. “There is so much collaboration among this Steering Committee because we share a love of the water that is all around us,” said Valenzuela.

Some of the youth in the Sea Scouts program are working on board historic Sea Scout Ship #110, which just celebrated its 90th birthday, to earn their Quartermaster Award. Other youth are attending outings to learn more about the abundant water that surrounds them in the South Puget Sound, now a Maritime Heritage Area. To access a new interactive on-line map where you can provide feedback on what sites you value in the new Maritime Heritage Area, visit map.preservewa.org. Raise a Glass with Jacques Pépin at the Saint Martin’s Gala This fall, Saint Martin’s welcomes French cooking legend Jacques Pépin and his daughter, Claudine Pépin, to the Saint Martin’s Gala on November 6, 2021. The Frenchborn, American chef has inspired generations as a gifted author, culinary educator, television personality and artist. Since the late 1980s, he has appeared on American television and has written for the New York Times, Food & Wine and other publications and has authored over 30 cookbooks. After moving to the United States in 1959, Pépin first worked at Le Pavillon, a historic French restaurant in New York City. Jacques Pépin has received 16 James Beard Foundation Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. For the past 30 years, Pépin has taught in the Culinary Arts Program at Boston University. Most recently, he has launched a fresh series of short videos, Jacques Pépin Cooking At Home, featuring short recipe videos that transform readily available ingredients into exciting new dishes, perfect for newly anointed home cooks and seasoned chefs alike. “With our videos, we are now teaching techniques and courses around the country. We want to inspire people with a love of cooking and to show how simple techniques can help kids and adults enjoy their time in the kitchen,” says Pépin. After this past year of spending time at home, Pépin is very excited to cook and savor French-inspired cuisine with attendees at the Gala. “I’m looking forward to cooking and sharing my love for food while raising a glass of wine at the Saint Martin’s Gala,” says Pépin. Tips on how to design an awesome outdoor kitchen Outdoor kitchens are gaining popularity. They are a great way to extend your living space and maximize your outdoor space. There are many details to consider, so take your time in the design and planning. Alinda Morris of Alinda Morris Interior Design, LLC offers her tips.

FUNCTION

 Consider how you will use the space and how you want it to function. Encourage a relationship with the indoor space. All of the areas in your home should work together so it makes sense that the outdoor kitchen should be a natural extension of your interior and other outdoor entertaining spaces.  When designing any kitchen, start with the layout and appliances. There are lots of outdoor appliances to consider; if you want an easy outdoor cleanup option, think about investing in a sink and dishwasher. Utility drawers and mini refrigerators make storage and entertaining easy.  Do not limit yourself! Think about adding fun features (if you think you will use them) like a smoker or pizza oven.  Make sure your appliances are rated for outdoor use — that means they can withstand freezing temperatures and extreme heat.

MATERIALS

 If you love the look of a painted cabinet, you can use a powder coated finish. The powder coating process provides a strong defense against corrosion. It is also a durable finish to protect cabinet doors and drawers from chips, spills, stains and unsightly fingerprints.  There are a few species of wood that can perform incredibly well in outdoor environments like teak, but any wood cabinet will require maintenance.  For a completely custom outdoor cabinet on a budget, you can use prefab stainless cabinets and set them in a natural or pre-cast architectural brick and stone veneer; stone is also highly weather-resistant.  Countertop materials such as concrete and natural stone are both durable and decorative. Concrete is porous and will capture stains and continue to patina over time. Granite works great outdoors, but marble may not. Most engineered stone is not recommended for outdoor applications. It is non-porous, but the process used to color and seal this engineered stone can fade and discolor significantly in direct sunlight.

 You will need to consider what materials are the best fit for your project. Is your outdoor kitchen covered or open to the elements? Here in the Pacific NW, we experience a variety of weather including world-record winter snows, the strongest non-tropical storms in the nation, and lots of rain, moisture and humidity. All of these factors will affect the integrity of materials used in your outdoor selections, especially your cabinetry, so consider this in detail.

PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER

 Stainless steel is a good material to use for outdoor kitchen cabinets as it likely matches your grill and outdoor appliances, and it is weather- and bug-proof.

For Additional Information

When selecting materials for your outdoor space and adding the finishing touches like furniture or a fire pit, you want to create balance with the interior and exterior color palette. You can add texture like stone, concrete, and more natural products but they should all work together to create the story you are trying to tell. This is the trick to creating a seamless yet stunning exterior space. vDELANEY DVORAK

A New Home for Holy Lamb Organics The innovative and sustainable company, Holy Lamb Organics, surprises our community once again with a new location. This time, right in the heart of creative downtown Olympia! Surrounded by international cuisine, historic buildings, breweries, cafes, art stores and other clothing and home goods shops, Holy Lamb Organics fits right in. Since 2017, the previous Olympia location was in the historic steam plant building, mere minutes from the space on Washington Street. When asked why the company decided to move, co-owner Jason Shaefer explained, “[when] the lease ended, we came here because this was more of a central spot. And we wanted to be a part of the revitalization of the downtown after all of the antics of COVID-19.” The new space is narrow, but still spacious enough to fit all their product, including mattress displays, and walking room for social distancing. Between handmade blankets and soft bed sheet bundles is a colorful chalk board featuring the cellular structure of wool drawn by a local artist. Around the store are more art pieces by another local artist, giving the store appropriate Olympian character. The move is working out well for the company and providing a different shopping experience than before. Most customers that visited the steam plant store were more conscious and already-decided buyers. At this central location, customers are largely walk-ins browsing the downtown. The benefit has been the profit of display settings, meeting interesting people and more involvement in a community they love. 36

They are becoming especially close to their neighbors, Painted Plate and Ember Goods coffee. “When customers seem to be stuck or indecisive, we will send them to Painted Plate for some creative release,” says Shaefer. “If the customer is lagging, we send them over to Ember Goods for some caffeine and vice versa. People are sent over to us to rest and test our mattresses.” Overall, the connection the company is creating with their community has been the most rewarding part of their move to central downtown. Be sure to check out Holy Lamb Organics’ new showroom to touch and experience their all-natural product and learn about their mission to provide ethical bedding. vNATALIE BENSON

Not A Dry Eye at Tumwater Eye Center Many of us share a common, elusive problem—Dry Eye Disease (DED), a condition caused by poor tear production. Over 16 million Americans were diagnosed with the syndrome in 2020 alone. For the last 26 years, the doctors at Tumwater Eye Center have been providing quality eye care and treating patients for this irritating condition. Dr. Douglas Jeske and Dr. Devin Finch assured us that, “We strive to get to the root cause for each patient’s DED. We utilize technology to image the oil glands and assess oil gland function.”

Healthy glands

Truncated glands

Several factors contribute to the development of DED, such as environment, medications, outside health issues and contact lens use. The most frequent cause of DED is the progressive loss of oil-producing glands in the eyelids that may come with aging; this helps explain why 50% of Tumwater Eye Center’s patients over the age of 50 experience symptoms. Be forewarned, though, while

aging is a significant factor in DED, younger people are susceptible, as exorbitant use of mobile and computer devices is a guilty agent. Burning, scratchy sensations, blurred vision, redness, and watery eyes are a few symptoms of DED, and, if it goes untreated, complications with corneal surface damage and infection can occur. Take proactive and preventative measures and look to Tumwater Eye Center’s expertise. Tumwater Eye Center’s treatment for patients is based on the cause of DED and may include prescription medications, nutritional supplements, lid hygiene, and advanced procedures like LIPIFLOW® to reset the oil glands. Tumwater Eye Center has experienced, dedicated staff. For the last three years in a row, the Center won the Outstanding Dry Eye Practice Award, 1 of 27 awards out of over a thousand practices. If you suspect you may be suffering from DED, don’t hesitate; schedule a visit at Tumwater Eye Center today. The Center follows CDC protocol and staff members received the COVID-19 vaccine to ensure patient safety. vNATALIE BENSON For Additional Information tumwatereye.com

Clothing as Communication AT ALL AGES AND STAGES With the pandemic forcing many to spend so much time at home, you may not have given fashion much thought over the past year. If there is one thing that we have learned during the pandemic, however, it is the importance of communication. From the cut of our hair to the clothes and jewelry we wear, everything we do visually is a form of communication. Actively engaging in that communication can have a surprisingly positive effect on our state of mind. Cognitive psychologists Hajo Adam and Adam Galinksy, from Northwestern University, examined the psychological effects that wearing specific articles of clothing have on the person wearing them. Adam and Galinsky identified the phenomenon called “Enclothed Cognition” which relates to the effect that clothing has upon a person’s mental process

and the way they think, feel, and function, in areas like attention, confidence, or abstract thinking. Much of the world is now facing the same challenge that professionals leaving the workforce for retirement have faced for generations — how do you maintain your identity when your home has suddenly become your whole world? You may have thought that you have been dressing to impress other people for all of those years, but the truth is, clothing has a significant impact on our self-image. The way we dress, even when we do not directly interact with other people, can have a notable effect on productivity, energy levels, confidence and overall sense of well-being. You may not want to wear a suit and tie or your best high heels around the house, but if wearing well-tailored clothing and nice jewelry is part of the routine that gives you confidence and brings order to your day, it is important to keep up the habit. With so many style icons joining the ranks of the “over-60 crowd,” there is no shortage of inspiration for maintaining a wardrobe that keeps you feeling fresh and inspired at every age and stage of life. Jane Seymour, Phylicia Rashad, Priscilla Presley and Helen Mirren all make life over 60 look like the most fun they’ve ever had with fashion. At 75, Mirren is proof that confidence comes with age and experience. “I used to worry a lot more about my looks than I do now – when you’re young and beautiful, you’re paranoid and miserable. I think the great advantage of getting older is that you let go of certain things.” vANGELA BYRGE
