Merry Christmas – from our family to yours. (John, Connie, Bowen, Hux & Katherine, Ki Riddle)
Embrace the Grace of Christmas
W
hat a year it has been! Valdosta has certainly had its share of severe weather, but as always, the community came together to help and support those most affected. Volunteers showed up to distribute food, water, tarps, and many other necessities across the area. The City of Valdosta and Lowndes County worked together alongside countless agencies to remind everyone that Valdosta truly is “Stronger Together.” Now, here we are at the most wonderful time of the year, celebrating being with family and friends and enjoying holiday festivities. While we are all busy decorating our homes and planning holiday celebrations, let’s remember to “Embrace the Grace of Christmas” by showing love and kindness to everyone we encounter this holiday season. Look your best at all holiday events and into the new year with fashions from retailers featured in our annual “Fashion Section.”
This year, we take a different spin on the fashion section by not only highlighting the best styles, but also going “Behind the Fashions” and providing background on each owner’s passion for fashion, how they established their business, and how they’ve developed their store’s culture. Of course, our annual holiday section, “In Holiday Style,” shares beautiful and unique decorating ideas that will inspire you as you adorn your own home with new holiday favorites this year. As always, we are very thankful for the advertisers, writers, photographers, graphic designers, proofers, and everyone involved in Valdosta Magazine. We are blessed with a great team. We pray your holidays are full of grace this year, and we wish you a season filled with thanksgiving, blessings, and joy! With appreciation, John & Connie Riddle

aldosta is a place where families and friends can gather to celebrate the holiday season together. For some community members, however, this holiday season may feel a bit different. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the community has pulled together to assist local businesses. Residents and business owners are committed to building back stronger than ever, and the city’s collective efforts have been met with increasing support. One area that can continue to support the city by investing back in our community is tourism. Out-of-town visitors notice Valdosta’s spirit and charm. Compared to 2022, Lowndes County saw a nearly 9% increase in visitor spending in 2023, reaching a total of $422.3 million. This surge reflects Valdosta’s appeal, with local businesses experiencing a 7.9% boost in food and beverage sales and a 6.1% rise in retail sales—generating $35.2 million in state and local revenue. With local businesses continuing to recover from the hurricane, there is no better time to spread holiday cheer throughout the city by inviting family and friends to come visit. Whether you’re a local or a first-time visitor, Valdosta offers a festive atmosphere that has made it a favorite for everyone. Embrace the magic of a Valdosta Christmas—where holiday traditions come alive. THE SPIRIT OF DOWNTOWN VALDOSTA Downtown Valdosta is where the magic begins! This year, the annual Downtown Christmas Parade is set to take place on Saturday, December 7 with floats, festive displays, and Santa Claus himself parading through the streets under the theme “A Georgia Christmas.” The Lowndes County

Tell us about your business. Our company processes, cleans, and prepares the product for export. What are the upsides of exporting your product? Exporting allows us to reach new, growing global markets. We can expand our brand and strategic reach by growing it outside of the USA. How has exporting impacted your employees and your business outlook? Exporting has allowed us to grow in ways never imagined. Our growth has allowed us to take on more employees and become a better corporate partner for our community and state. Can you share any numbers and/or percentages of export sales versus domestic? Export sales make up approximately 80 percent of our total sales.
Scott Hudson HUDSON PECAN hudsonpecan.com “FAMILY OWNED — GEORGIA GROWN.” THAT’S THE MOTTO of the Hudson Pecan Company, the family owned business which has been around for 150 years in one form or another. What started out as a passion project now occupies a considerable expanse of Irwin County, Georgia, where the city of Ocilla is the county seat. Still very much a family business, the current enterprise is run by the founder’s grandson, Scott Hudson. According to the University of Georgia Extension, Georgia is the nation’s largest producer of pecans, going back to the 1800s, accounting for at least a third of domestic production. An average pecan harvest in Georgia is about 88 million pounds, with which you could make 176 million pecan pies. Georgia’s pecans are considered part of the fruit industry; it supports approximately 13,000 jobs and contributes $1.9 billion to the state’s economy each year. Pecan pies are of course the most famous of the kernel’s byproducts, but the nuts themselves are actually teeming with nutrients, containing about 19 vitamins and minerals. Pecan trees are native to North America, but it was French settlers who first baked pecan pies. Thank you, French settlers. The pecan season runs from October through November, when pecans fall from trees in advance of the autumnal leaf drop. The nuts can be harvested as early as late September and occasionally as late as January. The timing depends on the variety of pecan as well as factors such as weather. When did the company start? The company was started by my dad in 1980; the former operation started with my grandfather. Originally the pecan trees that started the family tradition were dug up out of the creek bottoms surrounding the family farm. The nuts from those trees were used to help feed the livestock. My grandfather and dad began growing the business in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s into what it is today. As the export market has grown so have the farms as the need to export more pecans for the business became obvious.
How much land do you occupy? We have approximately 2500 acres of farmland. How much competition do you have? Oh man… worldwide competition. Are you strictly wholesale, or do you have retail sites as well? We have a very small retail presence. (In August, Hudson Pecan posted on social media: “We are excited to announce our big news: We are expanding our storefront to offer home and gift items. Don’t worry — we will also still have all of our delicious pecans!”) How difficult is exports? I think it’s probably wise to take a look at why we export. We started to move a great deal of volume outside the country to try to help with the domestic price for our friends and family in the farming business. But a litany of things had to be overcome to successfully export. One of the ruling guidelines for customers going into this is how do you schedule a truck, what do you do with customs control, do you need fumigation… There are a mountain of hurdles that have to be overcome. What is it like to work with the State of Georgia’s Economic Development Trade team? They help put us in touch with people and customers that we can talk to in different countries. They have a business plan and ideas on how to reach tough markets that may have been off limits before. Exporting pecans opens new global markets for Hudson Pecan, enhancing its brand presence and delivering highquality, Georgia-grown products around the world. Despite this year’s harvest being interrupted by the unwelcome arrival of Hurricane Helene, Hudson Pecan looks to rise stronger than before side-by-side with the Ocilla-Irwin County community.
The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s nationally recognized Trade team works with Georgia-based small businesses like Hudson Pecans to expand their global sales, making companies more resilient and creating opportunities for growth. The Trade team’s services, ranging from market research to international connections, are provided at no cost to eligible Georgia businesses. Together, Devan, Justin, and their team have grown the store while honoring the legacy and relationships that have shaped Only Options over the decades. Devan’s mother, Dana Boruff, has handled the books for the stores and the other family businesses for nearly 40 years, earning the nickname “Eagle One” by those closest to her. Justin participates in the men’s buying shows and works holidays and weekends. Sherry remains a cherished friend to Only Options, visiting on busy weekends to lend a hand and share in the laughter. Whether you’re looking for something specific or just browsing, their team actively curates items for you based on the reason for your visit. “The art of retail is as much about relationships as it is business,” Devan explains. “We take pride in creating a genuine shopping experience with a hands-on, personal touch tailored to the needs of each individual customer.” Only Options strives to make every visit feel like a gathering among friends. People love the store’s concierge-like approach as well as their unique in-store events. Saturdays are especially fun with treats and slushies, sidewalk sales, and occasional collaborations with local restaurants. One of Only Options’ core values is “supporting the people who support us.” Each year, they contribute to local charities, events, galas, and auctions, proudly supporting the organizations that make Valdosta great. This holiday season, they’re excited to partner for a second year with Leigh Ann and Dr. Ben Hogan for a toy drive benefiting the Salvation Army. “Our collaborations with Valdosta Magazine are another way we show our pride in the area, and we’re dedicated to promoting and supporting fellow local businesses,” Devan says.
herry C. Wetherington opened the doors of Only Options at the 1807 House on Patterson Street in 1986. ity Market Boutique has undergone many changes since its founding in 2008, when owner Jessica Lane purchased the business from its previous owners. At that time, it was a French market-style business selling handmade jewelry and art as well as secondhand items from people’s homes. Jessica decided to include other items in her inventory, ranging from baby gifts and clothing to home décor and women’s boutiquestyle fashion. After six successful years downtown, the store moved to its current location on Oak Street Extension. With the new space one-third the size of the old one, Jessica decided to cull her inventory to focus solely on women’s apparel and accessories, baby items, and gifts. In the process, she changed the name from City Market to City Market Boutique. Jessica and her mother, Kim Newman, have worked together to keep the store running smoothly, with Kim serving as office manager and assisting Jessica with display design. City Market Boutique carries merchandise appealing to a broad customer base, from teenage girls to women in their 60s and beyond. They offer products for gift-giving in all price ranges, from affordable Secret Santa-type presents to luxury items more suitable for weddings and other special occasions. “I believe people shop in a boutique because they like the personal touch that comes along
with it,” notes Jessica. “The items are usually more unique than what you find at big box retailers.” The quantity of each item is limited so customers feel like their purchases are more exclusive. Developing customer relationships is the boutique’s number one priority. “I stress to my team that we make customers—not sales,” Jessica explains. They work to create an atmosphere where customers know they can browse on their own or have someone they trust help them find the perfect gift or outfit. “We have formed relationships with so many people,” says Jessica. “We know their style, size, even favorite scent in candles. We try to make the shopping experience fun and easy.” They also offer complimentary gift wrapping. As an alumna of the Valdosta Junior Service League, Jessica knows the importance of giving back. City Market Boutique frequently participates in donations or silent auctions with organizations like the Turner Center for the Arts and the Valdosta Symphony Guild; they even provide gifts for school holiday parties. “It’s because of the support of the community that I get to do what I love, so I’m honored to contribute however I can,” she says. With help from her mom, Judy Hathcock, and Judy’s extensive background in marketing and entrepreneurship, the store officially became a reality on June 19, 2020, beginning initially just as an online retailer. Judy’s longstanding friendship with Karen Carson, owner of Salon Bloom, helped Heather create a brick-and-mortar opportunity for women in Valdosta to shop in person as well. At the time, Karen had an existing collaboration with another boutique retailer, but she was ready for a fresh start. Sisterology has kept inventory at the salon ever since and now has three wardrobes and four racks of clothing housed in a section of the salon for customers to browse through, try on, and purchase a variety of outfits. The company is headed by CFO Medina Franklin, a longtime associate of Judy’s, who brought 20+ years of experience in Judy’s company along with her. Sisterology’s collection features trendy, affordable pieces that women of all ages can wear. They offer a variety of styles at a range of price points, from casual and workout separates to glam dresses for special occasions. Because Heather, Hailee, and Hope all have their own unique style and are at different stages in their lives, their buying input ensures that every customer will find what she’s looking for. For those who prefer a more personalized experience, there’s Sis Styling, a free service provided for both local and online customers. Based out of Sisterology’s warehouse and headquarters, the process begins by selecting a stylist; from there, either via Zoom or in person, your chosen Sis helps you with a wardrobe refresh, an outfit for a girl’s night out, or a curated look perfect for any special event. Sis Styling customers even receive 24% off of the items they purchase. The company has grown a loyal following, with customers based as far GRAB YOUR SISTERS FOR A FUN NIGHT ON away as Texas and California, but regular THE TOWN WITH THE events at Salon Bloom and Sis Styling allow OLIVE YOU MINI DRESS. e always wanted a children’s store,” say Katie Hall and sister Allison Selph, who together bought Little Options from Sherry Wetherington in 2021. The decision came after the sisters had children close together in age. Katie’s oldest son, Brooks, was born just three months after Allison’s youngest son, John Collins, was born. They leaned on Sherry and the store manager, Adrian Howell, for mentoring in the months leading up to the final transfer of ownership. “During that time, we got in the store as much as we could and learned so much from the two of them,” says Allison. Adrian Howell, who remained as their store manager, is still a huge asset to Little Options today. Most of the customers at Little Options are mothers, grandmothers, and other women. They also have the occassional dad or granddad come in for a specific gift, and they always enjoy helping them as well. The store also offers gift registries for expectant moms and is always happy to help them register for their upcoming arrival. For customers who can’t make it in to the store, online shopping is still an option. Little Options carries clothing ranging from newborn to 16 along with other baby items and a wide variety of toys. From Tonka trucks and NERF to wooden toys and baby dolls, they have children of all ages covered. Allison and Katie’s top priority is the personal relationships they have with their customers. They listen to their needs and aim to ensure store inventory reflects customer tastes and preferences. “We strive to buy what we think our customers will love while getting inspo from our own kids and what we woud love to see them wearing,” Katie and Allison explain. The Little Options team gives back to the community in as many ways as they can by sponsoring and donating to local sports teams and events by churches and schools. They also support the Valdosta Junior Service League. More recently, the shop organized a clothing drive for victims of Hurricane Helene in conjuction with the local school system. For Christmas this year, Little Options is partnering with Necco, a local foster care agency. A tree decorated with ornaments for children being sponsored, along with their wish lists, will enable customers to buy gifts directly for each child. FASHION & HOLIDAY 2024 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE

DOUBLING DOWN ON SOUTHERN STYLE
I
n 2011, Sue Purdy began transitioning her tanning salon into a boutique with the encouragement of her two daughters, Chason and Alden. Because of their shared love of fashion, they suggested their mother add a small section of clothing to her salon, and that subtle change marked the beginning of the Reef Boutique. In 2015, with both Chason and Alden in college, Sue remodeled the 3,600 square foot salon into a space focused on selling apparel and accessories and the Reef Boutique was born. “In the beginning, Chason and Alden were both involved in running the store, but once Chason married and relocated, Alden took over the daily operations,” Sue explains. “We have learned from each other and have built a stronger relationship, both professionally and personally.” Alden and her mother enjoy picking out styles for their customers and discovering the latest in fashion and jewelry at apparel marts. Reef Boutique carries a wide variety of items including women's apparel, accessories, jewelry, candles, gifts, and home décor. They double down on true southern style, with options ranging from short bubble sleeve mini dresses and tiered midi dresses to flowy tops paired with cropped jeans. With most items priced at $100 or less, the boutique offers an affordable collection that’s trendy, stylish, and modern. Reef Boutique is a great place to shop for that special occasion outfit or browse for an eye-catching gift.
Whether you need something for work, date night, a special occasion, or an everyday look, they have you covered. Reef Boutique’s friendly staff always welcomes each of their customers while stylists work with women of all ages to provide a one-on-one experience and personalized accommodations for all. From helping you try on items in your favorite dressing room to curating outfits based on your personal style, Reef Boutique guarantees an enjoyable experience in an inviting atmosphere. Sue and Alden love working with the community and have given back throughout the years to many local schools, organizations, and charities. Clothes from the boutique were recently given to Second Harvest for victims of Hurricane Helene. They also recently donated to the Pearlman Cancer Center and the Symphony Ball and are currently planning a toy drive for the holidays. “We love helping out with events for those in need,” Alden says. “It’s great being a part of such a wonderful community.” FASHION & HOLIDAY 2024 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE

TIMELESS AND GENERATIONAL
T
he Steel family got their start in the jewelry industry in 1986 and boy, what a ride it’s been. It all started as a modest wholesale jewelry repair company providing custom pieces throughout South Georgia and North Florida. This business serviced nearly 38 independent jewelry stores before incorporating its own retail store in 1988. In the fall of 2001, they opened their first free-standing store in Summit Pointe and expanded that location in 2007. Since then, family involvement has grown along with the store. Steel’s currently employs nearly 15 family members ranging from owners and jewelers to seasonal and part-time sales associates. “This is something we do not take for granted,” says Susan. “I love watching my family work together.” Steel’s Jewelry is known for its timeless and generational pieces like diamond pendants and tennis bracelets, gold hoop earrings and necklaces, engagement rings and wedding bands, and everything in between. Steel's also has a large selection of fun fashion lines from designers like Kendra Scott, Charles Garnier, and Dee Berkley with entry price points starting as low as $29. If you’re interested in creating something more one-of-a-kind, their custom jewelry experience is for you. They also specialize in restyling or revitalizing items
you already own. Whether it’s a precious heirloom or an outdated design, let them craft a piece that’s perfect for your personal style. This interactive partnership involves you in every step of the way as you watch your dream become a reality. The first priority at Steel’s is ensuring every client feels like a treasured friend. They offer complimentary cleanings and can help you start a wish list or have your items appraised. They also have a full repair shop on site with fast turnaround time. Steel’s has always prioritized their community and its needs. In fact, they're involved with more local charities than you could mention. Susan has a particularly large heart for the Boys & Girls Club. Having served on the board for many years, she is now honored to serve on their Board of Trustees. This holiday season, let Steel’s help you find all things sparkly to bring joy to the special people in your life. Whether it’s a favorite teacher, cherished family member, dear friend, or wonderful babysitter you want to bless with some bling, they have something wonderful waiting for you—and they’ll be sure to wrap it in their signature style. A COMPASSIONATE H e a lt h GUIDE TO HOSPICE CARE
Providing Comfort and Dignity By Eli Metts, Nurse Practitioner, Hospice of South Georgia
H
ospice care focuses on providing comfort, dignity, and quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses such as, but not limited to, cancer, dementia, congestive heart failure, and COPD. This specialized care is typically introduced when a physician certifies that a patient has six months or less to live, but many patients benefit from hospice services for longer. Hospice of South Georgia and Langdale Hospice House, the only not-for-profit hospice in the region, serve patients of all ages, including the underinsured and uninsured, thanks to donations, fundraising, and other forms of community support.
atmosphere that feels far from a typical hospital setting. Patients can receive acute symptom management, respite care, or residential care depending on their needs, with the goal of either stabilizing them to return home or providing a serene space for end-of-life care. DISPELLING MYTHS ABOUT HOSPICE CARE
While hospice care is for those nearing the end of life, Hospice of South Georgia also offers palliative care for patients who are still seeking curative treatments but need extra support. Hospice care is delivered by an interdisciplinary team that includes registered nurses, social workers, chaplains, nurse aides, and volunteers. This holistic approach addresses not only medical needs but also emotional, social, and spiritual support. Hospice of South Georgia offers music therapy, pet therapy, and grief counseling to its patients as well.
A common misconception is that hospice is only for the final days or weeks of life. In reality, patients can be on hospice care for months or even years, with a focus on enhancing the quality of life. Hospice care supports not only the patients but also their families, offering guidance and tools to navigate the emotional journey. This holistic care helps families feel empowered and often leaves them grateful for the additional time and support they received. A physician’s certification of terminal illness is required to begin services, but this can be accomplished by the hospice medical director, and a physician order is not required to elect the hospice benefit. Despite popular belief, hospice care does not mean stopping all medications. Instead, it focuses on managing symptoms and providing comfort, allowing patients to maintain medications for chronic conditions and continue seeing their regular doctors if they choose.
UNDERSTANDING HOSPICE REFERRALS AND SERVICES
THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CONVERSATIONS AND PLANNING
Hospice patients are often referred from hospitals, primary care doctors, specialists, or even through self-referrals from families familiar with hospice care. A physician’s certification of terminal illness is required to begin services, but hospice care does not mean stopping all medications. Instead, it focuses on managing symptoms and providing comfort, allowing patients to maintain medications for chronic conditions and continue seeing their regular doctors.
One of the biggest challenges families face is the decision to begin hospice care. Often, patients are more open to it than their families, who may feel that choosing hospice means giving up hope. However, hospice is about making the most of the and sharing in comfort and meaningful experiences. Having early conversations about end-of-life wishes and planning ahead can ease the transition and improve the overall experience for both patients and their families.
THE LANGDALE HOSPICE HOUSE: A UNIQUE FACILITY
SUPPORTING PATIENTS AND FAMILIES BEYOND THE ILLNESS
The Langdale Hospice House offers 24/7 skilled nursing care in a comforting, homelike environment. It’s designed to provide a peaceful
Hospice care extends beyond the patient’s passing, offering bereavement services like individual grief counseling and support groups for 13 months after a loved one's death. The organization also supports its staff, recognizing the emotional demands of hospice work, by providing counseling and weekly remembrance ceremonies. Hospice of South Georgia’s mission is to provide compassionate, patient-centered care, making the end-of-life journey as dignified and peaceful as possible for both patients and their families. As a community-supported nonprofit, it continues to make a significant impact, reminding us that hospice care is not just about the end—it’s about enriching the life that remains. THE BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE
FOR CHILDREN Lacie Guy, D.C.
H e a lt h
Chiropractic treatments aren't just for adults. No matter their age, kids benefit from gentle treatments designed to relieve pain and promote growth and development. When your children visit the chiropractor, they'll experience these important benefits:
A NATURAL SOLUTION TO PAIN Rough-and-tumble play sessions, falls on the playground, poor posture, and sports injuries can lead to aches and pains for kids. In addition to injuries, kids can also struggle with aching arms and legs due to growing pains. Chiropractors treat pain holistically with treatments like spinal manipulation (adjustments), massage, soft tissue mobilization, and other treatments. Therapies are specially tailored to your child's needs and modified when necessary to ensure a safe, comfortable experience for your son or daughter. FEWER HEADACHES Tension and migraine headaches can begin when children are very young. Once they start, headaches can become a lifelong problem for kids. Your chiropractor may relieve headache pain by realigning the vertebrae in your child's neck with spinal manipulation therapy or by loosening tight, painful neck muscles with a soothing massage. In a case report published in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research in 2022, chiropractors discussed the effects of spinal manipulation treatment on a 15-year-old boy experiencing chronic migraines. The boy had only five migraines in the two years after treatment, despite experiencing migraines every three weeks before treatment. ENHANCED NERVOUS SYSTEM FUNCTIONING A strong nervous system is essential for your child's growth and development. Nerves carry messages from the brain that help control movement, speech, digestion, breathing, heart rate, and a healthy immune system. Misaligned vertebrae may press on nerves, preventing them from delivering a complete signal from the brain to the body's systems and organs. Chiropractic treatment relieves nerve pressure and supports healthy nervous system function. A strong nervous system is essential for good gut health and a healthy immune system. A GENTLER INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD You're never too young to reap the benefits of chiropractic care. In fact, modified chiropractic treatments are often performed
on newborns. The birth process can cause misalignments and imbalances, which may affect your newborn's development and comfort. Chiropractic treatments realign and rebalance the body and may help improve feeding or sleeping issues. IMPROVED ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE It's difficult to catch a ball or run quickly if your joints and muscles are tight and painful. Chiropractic care enhances flexibility and coordination and improves range of motion in joints. Treatments could also help your child avoid sports injuries. Spinal misalignments and tight muscles and tissues may cause imbalances that make it easier to fall or strain a muscle. Keeping the tissues loose and the spine properly aligned could prevent injuries. HELP FOR COLIC Colic occurs when your baby cries for hours for no apparent reason. Doctors aren't sure why some babies experience colic, although the condition might be caused by gas pains, food intolerances, or sensitivity to stimuli, according to MedlinePlus. Fortunately, chiropractic treatment may reduce crying bouts. Crying duration decreased by 1.5 hours for colicky babies receiving chiropractic treatment, according to a research study published in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies in 2021. Crying decreased by one hour in a control group of babies that attended the chiropractic clinic but didn't receive treatment. FEWER ADHD SYMPTOMS Chiropractic treatment might reduce common attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, like hyperactivity, difficulty paying attention, and impulsiveness. Children with ADHD who participated in a study published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2024 received either usual care plus chiropractic treatment or usual care plus sham (fake) chiropractic treatment. Both groups showed improvement in symptoms after treatment. The researchers noted that more research is needed to evaluate chiropractic treatment effects on children with ADHD.

COLDWELL BANKER HOME ADVICE Article by TOM CALL
THE NAR LAWSUIT
WHAT THE OUTCOME MEANS FOR YOU AS A CONSUMER As a broker with Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate, I believe in keeping our clients informed about important developments in the real estate industry. Recently, the lawsuit against the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and several major brokerages reached its conclusion, bringing about significant changes in how real estate transactions will be conducted moving forward. While the legal process has been closely watched, the outcome promises a more transparent, competitive, and consumer-friendly market. Here’s what this means for you. THE LAWSUIT: A RECAP The lawsuit against NAR challenged the traditional commission structure in real estate transactions where sellers typically pay commissions to both their own agent and the buyer’s agent. Plaintiffs argued that this system was anti-competitive and resulted in higher costs for consumers. The lawsuit aimed to reshape the way agents are compensated and increase transparency in real estate practices. Now that the legal proceedings are complete, several key changes have been mandated that will impact buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals alike. POSITIVE CHANGES FOR CONSUMERS 1. Enhanced Transparency: One of the most significant outcomes of the lawsuit is a commitment to greater transparency in commission structures. Consumers will now have a clearer understanding of what they are paying for and how commissions are allocated. This shift ensures that buyers and sellers are more informed, empowering them to make decisions that best suit their needs and budget. 2. Flexibility in Commission Negotiations: The settlement encourages flexibility and negotiation when it comes to commissions. Sellers and buyers can now openly discuss and negotiate agent fees, ensuring that they only pay for the services they value. This increased ability to negotiate can result in cost savings and services customized to individuals' needs. 3. A More Competitive Market: Removing certain restrictions and encouraging more open competition sets the tone for a more consumer-friendly market. Agents will need to differentiate themselves through the quality of their service rather than relying on traditional commission structures. This competition will likely drive innovation and improve the overall real estate experience for clients. 4. Direct Payment Options for Buyer’s Agents: One of the significant changes is that buyers may now directly compensate their agents, rather than the fee being bundled into the seller’s expenses. This change allows buyers to clearly see the value their agent provides and choose services accordingly. For many, this will bring more clarity and control over the costs associated with buying a home.
5. Empowerment Through Choice: Consumers will now have more options when selecting real estate services. Without the obligation to adhere to a set commission structure, buyers and sellers can pick the level of service they need and can afford. This customization can lead to a more personalized and satisfying real estate journey. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR COLDWELL BANKER PREMIER REAL ESTATE CLIENTS At Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate, we view these changes as a positive evolution in the industry. Our commitment to providing exceptional service, transparency, and value remains unchanged. We see this as an opportunity to further distinguish ourselves by offering competitive, client-centered solutions that meet the diverse needs of today’s buyers and sellers. Our agents are well-equipped to navigate this new landscape, ensuring that our clients continue to receive the best guidance and support throughout their real estate transactions. Whether you’re buying, selling, or simply exploring your options, our goal is to help you feel confident, informed, and in control every step of the way. MOVING FORWARD: EMBRACING THE NEW ERA OF REAL ESTATE The conclusion of the NAR lawsuit marks the beginning of a new era in real estate—one that prioritizes transparency, competition, and consumer choice. At Coldwell Banker Premier Real Estate, we are excited about the positive changes ahead and are dedicated to helping our clients thrive in this evolving market.
If you have any questions about how these changes may affect your buying or selling experience, please don't hesitate to reach out. Our team is here to provide the expertise and support you need to make the most of these new opportunities. Together, let’s embrace a brighter, more transparent future in real estate.

RICHARD & BILL COWART
BROTHERS BROTHERS BY BIRTH, BIRTH, BY FRIENDS BY CHOICE
Richard (seated) and Bill in their teens. Introduction by AMY FAESKORN | Photo by MELANIE BROWN PORTRAITS
B
ehind Bill Cowart’s desk stands a case containing a folded American flag and a letter signed by then U.S. Senator Herman Talmadge on December 4, 1963. The letter acknowledged the request made by E.L. Cowart, Bill and Richard's uncle, that a flag be flown over the Capitol as a Christmas gift for his nephews. Due to the JFK assassination, flags could not be flown again until the official mourning period was over, so what was meant to be a Christmas present arrived the next year. By that time, it carried much more significance to the brothers because in January, 1964, they lost their dad, who
had served in the United States Army during World War II. It is also a constant reminder of the care and influence their extended family showed them through the years along with their mother. Retiring on December 31, these brothers have given an outstanding combined total of more than 80 years of professional and volunteer service to their community As Valdosta pays tribute to the Cowart brothers and their numerous contributions to the fields of law and banking—not to mention several nonprofits, charities, and places of worship—their story reveals itself as truly inspiring. Both men overcame a
devastating childhood loss to find niches where they not only thrived but also surpassed any reasonable expectations for achievement. They have improved the lives of their fellow citizens and maintained a close relationship that has kept both families connected for three generations. With grace, generosity, and honor, Richard and Bill Cowart have made a name for themselves in their respective professions through civic responsibility and as valuable friends to many in the Valdosta community and beyond.

T
he Honorable Richard M. Cowart, Chief Judge of Superior Court, Southern Judicial Circuit, retires December 31. It’s not a decision he takes lightly. In his fifth-floor office of the H. Arthur McLane Judicial Complex, he reflects, “I’ve been doing this a long, long time. I’m 73—and the judgeship is a four-year term. I believe if the people elect someone for a four-year term, then he’s obligated to serve it. So when the decision came around, as it does every four years, whether to run again, I decided in late 2023 that I need to run or retire. Stepping down midterm just didn’t feel like an option to me.” Judge Cowart has been on every election cycle ballot since 1984, unopposed, and in office on the bench since Governor Joe Frank Harris’ 1983 appointment to the State Court of Lowndes County. Cowart’s long-time friend, the late Senior Superior Court Judge H. Arthur “Mac” McLane, encouraged him to apply for the state court judgeship he vacated as he moved to superior court.

In turn, as a new superior court judgeship was created in 1995, Governor Zell Miller appointed Cowart to that post, where he has remained, having achieved Chief Judge status. Prior to state and superior court, Cowart served as the judge of recorders (now known as municipal) court from 1978-1983. Looking back on his career, Cowart says that he never regretting going to law school—he enjoyed both practicing law and presiding over cases. He speaks highly of the esteemed group of Valdosta attorneys that he worked alongside following his 1976 graduation from Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University, where he received his Juris Doctorate. He recalls that there was an active and close-knit cadre in the Valdosta Bar Association that met monthly with everyone in attendance. Cowart served as its president during 1986-87. Whereas now there are perhaps over 200 members, in the 1970s, there were less than 100.

JUDGE COWART VALUES TIME WITH FAMILY MOST OF ALL. For decades, Cowart has traveled the Southern Judicial Circuit, including the counties of Brooks, Colquitt, Echols, Lowndes, and Thomas. This meant carrying a heavy load of documents packed into a large briefcase that went with him, often returning in the evenings. He still carries the briefcase, but notes that today “everything you need is in a laptop.” Each courthouse, beautiful and historic, has its own staff of administrators, attorneys, deputies, and bailiffs, and he has enjoyed working with them all. It’s the people he will miss the most. He adds, “Each day in court is unique. In this position, you might see people coming before the bench that have a myriad of problems, and it can be sad, but we have an opportunity to help them. Perhaps we can give them a track to get on—a structure to maneuver to make their lives better. I believe in no politics, just in being fair to everyone.” Family, home, and church have always been central to Cowart’s life. He was born here, grew up here, went to college here, and proudly asserts that he has always loved Valdosta. He recalls that he and his brother, Bill, were young when their father died suddenly of a heart attack. His mother worked at C & S Bank, and he notes that “taking care of us must have been so difficult back then.” He credits her and a couple of uncles, one in Savannah, and the other in Albany, for stepping in to take them for visits in the summer and see that they had what they needed. Strong role models in the family made life without their father somewhat easier, and it’s no surprise that the brothers became leaders. While at Valdosta State University, where Judge Cowart received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1973 and was voted president of his fraternity, a position that his little brother Bill also assumed a few years later.
Judge Cowart values time with family most of all. He enjoyed coaching his four sons in basketball, baseball, and football. He laughs recalling the days in little leagues when he and his brother Bill coached their sons together. Judge Cowart is the proud father of four sons and a daughter and grandfather of nine (going on ten) grandchildren: Zachary and Amy Cowart of Valdosta, parents of Zachary and Luke; Justin and Jacquelyn Cowart of Valdosta, parents of Mary Jac and Virginia; Adam and Julie Cowart of Valdosta, parents of Hansen and Julia; Ben and Charlotte Cowart of Atlanta; and Anna and James Connell of Atlanta, parents of Annabel, Sadie, and Mac. As for retirement, Judge Cowart plans to take senior status, meaning that he could preside over any superior court matter throughout the state as needed. He will move into Judge McLane’s former office downstairs. He doesn’t really plan to sit on the bench in the metro Atlanta area though; he says that when he goes there, he wants to visit with his children and grandchildren. He looks forward to serving in the same judicial district he has come to know and love all these years. When asked what he would like others to know about his career, Judge Cowart said he’s most grateful for his wife of more than 50 years, Jeanne. He states, “I’ve been fortunate to have the strongest supporter in my wife. I could have never had the career I’ve had without her to raise our five children. She took care of us and kept everything going. I mean, we’ve done it together, but she has played a big part. There were many late afternoons when I was in Thomasville or Moultrie and she was on her own.” They share common interests; she’s an artist, and they both enjoy attending the games and recitals of their grandchildren. -VM FASHION & HOLIDAY 2024 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE

INVESTING IN IN INVESTING FAITH, FAMILY, AND COMMUNITY Story by AMY FAESKORN Photo provided by SYNOVUS
SYNOVUS MARKET EXECUTIVE BILL COWART CLOSES THE BOOKS ON AND BANKS ON A BRIGHT FUTURE IN RETIREMENT
B
anking has been in Bill Cowart’s blood from the time he was a young man—you might even say it’s in his DNA. “My mother was a teller for C & S Bank before it was taken over by Bank of America, and my uncle, E.L. Cowart, was vice president of that same bank in Savannah,” he recalls. Born in Albany, Cowart has lived in Valdosta his entire life. His father died when he was just 10 years old, leaving his uncle to support and mentor him and his brother, Richard, a great deal during their formative years. While studying business management at what was then Valdosta State College, Cowart wasn’t sure what step to take after graduation. “I had no clue what I wanted to do. My uncle told me if I tried banking, I would at least get a good business background,” he says. Cowart was fortunate to be taken under the wing of Don Schutt, a man who would become another profound influence on his life. In 1975, Schutt hired Cowart as

a management trainee at First National Bank while he was still in his senior year. “I did everything. I was a teller. I filed checks. I kept the books. It really helped me understand what I was getting into,” Cowart remembers. He felt he had found his calling, staying at First National for the next decade and rising through the ranks to become president in 1986. “Don Schutt played a huge role in my professional growth. He was a very caring person who mentored many of my peers who went on to become presidents at other local banks,” he says. Cowart learned early on that the banking community in Valdosta consisted of a tight group of individuals working hard to attain leadership positions—all in the spirit of mutual respect and healthy competition, of course. “Mr. Schutt really instilled in us that a competitor could still be a friend. He said to make a decision and stick by it, and to always care for the people who work for you.”

IT’S BEEN BEEN SUCH SUCH A A FUN FUN IT’S CAREER. I’M I’M VERY VERY FORTUNATE FORTUNATE CAREER. TO HAVE HAVE HAD HAD WORK WORK THAT THAT II TO ALWAYS LOVED LOVED TO TO DO. DO. ALWAYS Valdosta went from having only four banks in the 1970s to rapid expansion and growth in the '80s and '90s. These changes saw extensive corporate takeover and technological changes that radically altered the way business was conducted. In 1990, First National Bank was bought by First Union, a large regional bank. Cowart left to become president of Park Avenue Bank, where he stayed until 2001, when he became executive vice president at Synovus. In 2010, he was appointed as president with Synovus. Throughout his career, Cowart has prioritized the relationships he has with his colleagues and his customers. “That’s truly what banking is all about—helping people make decisions that affect their businesses and their personal lives,” he says. Garrett Copeland, who will take over as market executive upon Cowart’s retirement at the end of the year, returned to Synovus in 2021, saying it was a “no-brainer” to come back to work with him again. “He’s an outstanding leader. He cares so much about clients and the community,” Copeland says, noting that Cowart will do whatever he can to help a client, even if that means tweaking a policy or making an exception to find a solution that works. “‘Creative banking’ is what we call it,” jokes Copeland, whose father, Glenn, worked with Cowart under Don Schutt 40 years ago. Mike Dover, chairman of the board of Synovus for the last 25 years, first met Cowart when he was with First National Bank. “He’s a fine banker, but an exceptionally good man. Aside from being a genuinely decent person, he has really cared for his employees,” he says, pointing out that Cowart sends uplifting email messages of encouragement and acknowledgement every Friday, copying board members as well. “He’s always conducted
himself in such an honorable way. He tries to do the right thing and has great integrity. And he’s a strong Christian fellow.” Faith and family have been at the core of Cowart’s approach to his work, keeping him grounded through the ups and downs of the industry. He has been a member of Park Avenue Church since 1976 where his brother, Richard, has been his Sunday School teacher for 40 years. He and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 15 years. Between the two, they have seven children and 13 grandchildren, many of whom come over for dinner every Thursday night and even choose the menu. Cowart has served on committees and boards of charitable organizations too numerous to list, including the VSU Foundation, the American Heart Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Hospital Authority. With the day of his actual retirement drawing near, Cowart looks forward to a new stage in life—but he won’t disappear from Synovus entirely; he’ll maintain a seat on the board and will keep an office at the branch. “When you no longer need to get up every day at 6 and start work at 7, you do wonder how that’ll go,” he laughs. “But I’ll figure it out.” He’s looking forward to being with family, traveling, and playing a few more rounds of golf than usual. Cowart counts his blessing as he looks back at a life spent in service to his beloved hometown. “It’s been such a fun career. I’m very fortunate to have had work that I always loved to do,” he recalls. “That’s what my job has been about: helping others and having a heart for people.” As his next chapter unfolds, he’ll most certainly continue to do both. -VM

In 2020, that business morphed into a vendor mall in the iconic two-story brick building between Patterson and Ashley streets on the south end of downtown Valdosta. Chez What broadened its appeal when Katie, with her husband and co-owner, Patrick, invited artists, designers, and other vendors to come on board. The store functioned for four years as a popular destination for customers throughout South Georgia and beyond on the hunt for unique, affordable items to decorate their homes. In September, when the building that housed Chez What collapsed during Hurricane Helene, Katie realized she needed to act quickly. “After the initial shock wore off, all we could think of were our vendors who had ordered things for Christmas, and we didn’t want to let them down,” she says. Two days after the storm, she received word that the space on Gornto Road, was available. She and Patrick signed the lease, setting in motion plans to

reopen as Chez What Collective – which they did just 41 days after Hurricane Helene had done her worst. The new venture is an innovative hybrid pulling together a team of interior designers, artists, and vendors, with inventory ranging from modern furnishings and antique treasures to market-sourced giftware and accessories. Moving to a space with half of the previous location’s square footage proved challenging, but the relocation also allowed them to be fully intentional about how Chez What Collective would be different. “I wanted to keep those strong relationships I had made, but in a way that was pleasing to the eye and mixing it all together,” she says. Interior designer Doug Carter drew the plans for the store with wall divisions that recall the former boothstyle layout while allowing for more overlap in merchandise display. Chez What enthusiasts can now order custom draperies or bedding, or simply browse the alcoves. “You can bring in your paint color and fabric elements and have us
all take a look,” explains Katie. “I’m surrounded by such talented people,” Katie says. She’s referring to the wisdom and talents of the well-known interior designers who make up Chez What Collective: Rena Barclay, Jan Hannay, Mary Hawthorne, Ann Lacey, Devan Martin, Maura Respess, Callie Shaw, Diane Smith, Kim Strickland, Harriett Sutton, and Doug Carter and his wife, Christy. While devastated to lose the Chez What she and Patrick had previously worked so hard to build, Katie is grateful to be back up and running so soon after the hurricane. The move has reignited her creativity and enabled her to reimagine her business. “People say you should live in several houses before you build your dream home,” she smiles, “and what we’ve built here is our ‘dream home’ for Chez What. This is a true collaboration taking into account everything I’ve learned in the past. It’s a group effort where we hold each other accountable to stay current with trends and keep the space looking fresh and
inviting.” The old Chez What vendor mall will always hold a special place in the hearts of everyone who contributed to its success—a fact that’s not lost on Katie. “In the four years we were at that location, I made more friends than I can count,” she recalls. “And people have cried talking about the old days and how much they loved being a part of it.” Because she and Patrick retain ownership of the original building, they plan to rework it as an additional project in the future. For now, though, Katie is making good on her commitment to the local interior design community and helping each of her customers make their own chez as très beau as it can possibly be. -VM FASHION & HOLIDAY 2024 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE

to do from the beginning, and it’s very rewarding. It comes full circle, where you see somebody and you build a relationship and some trust. It takes a while to capture their weaves and designs and get them to approve it. Some of these artists have spent nine or 10 months making one rug — they’ll sell it and get one check. Or, they can share that design with us and get perpetual income forever. They own the copyright. It’s their design. The fun part is working with the artists and seeing how to handle their artwork or rendering; then we get the nod from the artist and put the spotlight on them — that’s our goal.

he city of Calhoun in northwest Georgia sits in the heart of the Cherokee Nation. Today, Calhoun is home to a huge textile industry, which includes American Dakota, a niche rug supplier that uses Native American artists to create its designs. Owner Mark Ford has been working with a team from the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) to facilitate exporting his products. Recently, he discussed his business model and its reciprocal relationship with the area’s indigenous people. What prompted you to do business in Calhoun? We’re in the textile business, and it’s a textile town. Even in high school, if I had a summer job, it was usually with a textile company. Since I was 17 years old I’ve been dabbling with textiles. When I was in college, I swore I’d never do rugs. I’m going to get a real job! Lo and behold, here I am doing rugs. You work with indigenous people. In college, I minored in Native American studies. I’ve been a staff artist since ‘93 with Whispering Wind magazine, which is a bi-monthly magazine that covers crafts, culture, powwows, and history. That work is where some of the inspiration comes from. Part of our mission at American Dakota is to seek out positive relationships with Native artists and create passive income for them. It’s a real treat to work with someone who’s off the grid a bit, yet they can earn income from something they create. You have an equal profit sharing arrangement with your artists, is that right? Yes! If I make 50 bucks, they get 25. I never begrudge writing those checks because that’s what we planned
And you then manufacture and distribute their designs. Yes! And we help them find stores, if they’ll allow us, and we’ll introduce their rugs to our existing customers. Are there other companies in the area doing the same sort of thing as you? No, we are definitely an oddity. We’re small compared to others. Their sample departments are bigger than ours. And they have to feed that machinery, so at their plants they have looms, printers, various machines … It’s like a steam engine you have to keep chugging the coal into. Exporting; you tried Japan at first, correct? I worked with the State of Georgia looking for opportunities. Initially, we were very well received in Japan. I knew we would be. If it’s one thing they appreciate, it’s craftsmanship; it fits in with their culture. They’d rather buy something handmade than mass-produced. They like American iconic stuff: Harley-Davidson, Mickey Mouse… These things resonate with them, so when you have a company that has that uniquely Americana look, the Japanese get it. Japan knows American nuances. They know more about Navajo (artistry) than a lot of Americans do. They liked the aesthetic and the fact that we work with tribes; there was a lot of potential there. The next chapter with the State of Georgia is trying to get into Canada. We’re already exporting there via FedEx, but there’s some bigger potential. The people at the state office are coaching me on opportunities. They’ve been fantastic. They go to Japan and Canada for me and do their homework. They take it seriously. What do you want to be known for? We want to be good at our genre. We want to be the best. That means setting the bar in a cabin or a rustic mountain home where others are held to our standard. That would be flattering if it happened.

lla Brown, the restaurant’s namesake, bought the business from its original owners in 2005 and has worked there since its original opening in 1977. Since 2019, Ella's grandson, Nick Perry, has served as co-owner and CEO, managing all restaurant operations and ensuring the community’s favorite flourishes for years to come. Nick’s interest in Ella’s Top Corral started at the early age of 13, when his grandmother let him hand-pat burger patties, a tradition he still takes pride in today. “The burgers are never frozen, always hand-patted,” Nick explains. Once he turned 15, he tried his hand at the front counter by interacting with customers and working the register. After class in high school, he would make his way to the restaurant and work in the afternoons. Nick's discipline and strong work ethic grew with him. By the time Nick was a student at Valdosta State University, he had added an early morning shift at United Parcel Service to his routine while still maintaining shifts at the family restaurant. Despite his dedication to Ella’s Top Corral from an early age, he hadn't initially considered it a career path. In fact, he originally planned to take his psychology degree and obtain a master’s degree at Florida State University. Those plans changed during a heartfelt conversation with Ella, when she reminded him how “he’d prepared for this [the restaurant] all his life.” “I don’t like being told what to do," Nick says. It was this self-owning mindset that ultimately pushed him to take Ella’s
profile Top Corral under his wing as a serious career. Still, he had rules for accepting the partnership. Nick’s first condition was a remodel. The old strip lighting and dated tile would no longer do, and Ella agreed. During this remodel, Nick closed the restaurant for a week during which time the roof, kitchen, lighting, floors, bathrooms, chairs, and tables were all updated. In true community-focused fashion, he also instituted a paid, weeklong vacation twice a year for all staff. Hard work always pays off, especially when it involves family upholding their legacy—but that doesn’t make it easy. “That first year was rocky but also a fun adventure. I felt like I was winging it every single day, but with proper planning and always leading with authenticity, integrity, and professionalism, I was able to put my best foot forward,” recounts Nick. In 2018, Ella’s Top Corral won “Best Burger in South Georgia"—a title they have reclaimed every year since. In 2019, they added “Best Hotdog in South Georgia” to the list. By the time 2020 rolled around, the restaurant had reminded the community just why it was a delicious, fast, and affordable hometown favorite. That same year, Kyle Webb, Ella’s Top Corral’s marketing director, began evaluating the potential impact of the COVID pandemic on the business. Like other restaurants, they had no choice but to close the dining room to customers, but Nick was still determined to continue serving the community via the drive-thru. “We pivoted hard. We closed the dining room and launched our mobile app,” recalls Nick. “We kept our drive-thru going and eventually added contactless catering.” Even during the pandemic, customers were wrapped around the building as sales reached an all-time high. The dining room officially reopened its doors to customers in 2022, but disaster would strike once more when Hurricane Idalia surged through Valdosta in 2023. Ella’s Top Corral was among the many buildings that took a huge hit from the storm. The entire restaurant space was destroyed, from water damage to the
grills, deep fryers, and cash register to a completely caved in office and roof top splayed across Patterson Street. The Ella’s Top Corral family once again decided to make the best of a dire situation. Rather than losing their fresh shipment of meat, they served their community by offering a free food line in the parking lot, feeding a thousand hungry first responders and citizens. Ella's Top Corral closed for seven months during their rebuild but reopened with the same 12 employees who never lost a paycheck. By the time Hurricane Helene came through, Nick and Ella were prepared with generators and a strong, new foundation. In the days following Helene, the restaurant provided a sense of normalcy for customers with cool air, internet, and delicious food. When Judy Hathcock, in partnership with the City of Valdosta, sponsored their Feed the City three-day lunch event, Ella’s Top Corral served over 600 people. As a member of the Leadership Lowndes Class of 2023, Nick has been a fixture in local outreach with no intention of slowing down his community involvement. From feeding residents of the Salvation Army and the Haven to donating to the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta, Ella’s Top Corral always gives back. Co-created by Nick and marketing director Kyle,

here are some excellent Irish writers publishing novels today: Colm Toibin, Tana French, Emma Donoghue, and John Boyne come to mind. Rooney burst onto the literary scene in 2018 with Conversations with Friends, followed by Normal People and Beautiful World, Where are You? Each is original and wonderfully atmospheric. One thing you know if you’ve read these, Rooney doesn’t use quotation marks around dialogue. At first, this might slow readers down a bit, but the dialogue is so revelatory that it deserves the pause and effort. “Intermezzo” is the word used for a short piece of instrumental music that connects movements, perhaps in an opera. There are a few romances being connected here. In Dublin, where it is apparently always raining, two brothers are continually out walking and pondering. Peter is a successful attorney, and his decade-younger brother, Ivan, is a chess prodigy. Peter is typically articulate and perceptive except when it comes to romance, when he fumbles between his first love, Sylvia, and much younger fling, Naomi. ewman, the author of the bestseller We All Want Impossible Things, has been garnering acclaim for her latest novel. The title Sandwich seems funny, but readers will quickly make the connection to the generation of 50-somethings caught in the middle of caring for aging parents and their own children. Plus, the plot—going back and forth for decades—centers on the week the family rents a simple, somewhat ramshackle cabin on Cape Cod each summer, where the mom, Rocky, makes the sandwiches for the daily 1 P.M. lunch picnic on the beach. It’s a task she grumbles about even as it becomes increasingly apparent that she loves doing it. They are complicated sandwiches, after all. Rocky and her husband, Nick, have a son and a daughter who are in their twenties and living independently. But this one week everyone comes, even Rocky’s parents. The son brings his girlfriend along, and she’s loved like family too. There are laughing moments and also some poignant ones. One aspect of this deceptively simple family drama is the clever dialogue. Rocky often comments candidly on situations “in her head” only to learn—oops—she said it aloud. Nick must be the best husband ever; yet, Rocky notes that by virtue of being a woman, she has (literally and figuratively) borne the brunt of the reproductive life cycle. She laments

rower, an Oxford University and Barnard College graduate, CNN contributor, and former FOX news producer, has published columns in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair. She covered the Obama administration for Bloomberg News. Her previous books about the American presidency have earned her the title “The Queen of Inside Washington Storytelling.” How did she come to write the first authorized biography of Elizabeth Taylor, you might wonder? The late Senator John Warner encouraged her to, saying that most people judged Taylor without ever considering the “massive weight of her celebrity.” This book had the cooperation of Taylor’s family, trustees, friends, personal assistants, and even her bodyguards. It took over three years to write; Brower’s considerable research (including heretofore unseen letters, audiotapes, and journals) is documented in the back of the book, comprising 30 pages of afterword, sources and notes, and indices. This biography is fascinating, illuminating Taylor’s life from beginning to end with “insider information.” The word “paparazzi,” originally used to describe aggressive Roman freelance photographers, entered the lexicon when Taylor and Burton were staying
at a massive villa near Rome during the filming of Cleopatra. They were the “first celebrity couple” besieged by press, some literally barging into the home and throwing ladders up against the windows with cameras. Brower offers insight into Taylor’s idyllic childhood in Hempstead, England, and how she came to California upon Chamberlain’s declaration of war against Germany in 1939. She worked in films from the age of seven, ultimately appearing in more than 50 films, winning two Academy Awards and four Golden Globes. Taylor is less known for her legacy of AIDS advocacy, but she was passionate about helping others. And, oh yes, there were eight marriages to seven husbands, and love that endured when those were over. This is a biography to keep on your nightstand and enjoy reading whenever you have a moment. It’s not totally chronological, so you can pick up and even skip around a bit, but each chapter is enthralling. Brower’s bestseller, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, was acquired by Shondaland and will be a Netflix series. *** C ON T E M P OR A RY F IC T ION

n her website, Drysdale says she’s an author, actor, and musician who grew up all over the world, living on “a steady diet of coffee, dreams, and literature.” She currently lives in Australia, where her previous four books are bestsellers, but this novel, part thriller and part pop, is very much a California story. Its heroine, Zoe, is a one-hit (well, almost a hit) wonder of a novelist. She must produce a second novel in a matter of weeks or admit defeat, return her big advance, and go home to England. Nearing 30 and nervous about her failures, Zoe runs into Zach, the bartender she had fallen in love with years earlier. Back then, Zach ghosted her cruelly, and she’s not over it, especially now that he has made
it as a big-time movie star. She decides to plot her second novel about him, even though he’s made her sign an NDA. Newly celebrity-adjacent and reunited with Zach, photos of Zoe with him appear in the press, and she gains a notoriety along with a stalker who threatens murder. Who is the stalker? She suspects several close to her. The reader is along for the ride in this fast-paced thriller. eters’ debut novel won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and the Dartmouth Book Award, among other accolades. A native Nova Scotian, Peters is of Mi’kmaq and settler ancestry. Though this is her first published novel, she’s been writing shorter pieces for years and is known for the Indigenous Voices Award in 2021. This narrative features a Mi’kmaq family who makes an annual sojourn to Maine from their Nova Scotia home to pick blueberries at a large farm. The family is close-knit, with five beloved children: Ben, Charlie, Joe, Mae, and Ruthie. Their lives are full of hard work, often amid rust, decay, and under a blistering sun. They aren’t allowed to swim in the lake as the white workers do. Despite the hardships, they are happy until the youngest child, four-year-old Ruthie, goes missing while waiting for her siblings at the end of a row of berries. The point of view bounces among the children as they grow up. Their plotlines diverge for decades until—ultimately—they begin to meet. Despite the loss and heartbreak, this is not a depressing tale. Peters writes beautifully and her characters are engagingly human. Waiting for the Long Night Moon, Peters' collection of short stories, will be out in February. ***

published writer for years and an acclaimed writing coach, Goodman achieved fame and bestseller status when “Read with Jenna” chose Sam as their January 2023 selection. In Goodman’s author’s note at the end of Isola, which is now available for pre-order, she says that she was thinking about Marguerite de la Rocque de Roberval, its heroine, for years before even writing Sam. While reading an illustrated history of explorer Jacques Cartier to her son, she came across the tale of Marguerite, who in 1542, was deliberately marooned by her guardian on an island (“isola” in Italian) in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (now known as Canada) where she managed to survive polar bears, snowstorms, and near starvation for more than two years. Using other historical accounts, including those of the Queen of Navarre (France) and a Catholic priest, Andre Thevet, Goodman imaginatively retells Marguerite’s story. Marguerite was born to wealthy, noble parents, orphaned by plague, robbed of her estate, and cruelly used by her guardian, a distant cousin. Ultimately though, she's a warrior and a survivor. This 16th century heroine’s story is vividly and boldly told – and a surprising page-turner.

n Friday, November 6, Unity Park in Downtown Valdosta was filled with the “Sounds for Lowndes” benefit concert. The proceeds were directed through the Greater United Way to support organizations involved in ongoing hurricane relief efforts. The concert was the brainchild of Matthew Lawrence, of Young, Thagard, Hoffman LLP, who led the effort to underwrite the cost of the concert by anonymous donors. The eventwas co-sponsored by the City of Valdosta, United Way, ONE Valdosta, Lowndes County, Valdosta Main Street, and Valdosta Magazine. To make donations visit: unitedwayvaldosta.org or call 229-242-2208.
