Where did the summer go? After a cool start, warm weather arrived earlier this month and made it feel like the season had just begun. It’s hard to believe that October and fall are just around the corner…my favorite time of year on the North Fork. Featured on this month’s front cover, Sheri Winter Clarry of the Corcoran Group presents the spectacular Big E Farm and vineyard property. NFRES: As one of the more seasoned real estate agents on the North Fork, what is it that sets you apart from the others? JM: Perhaps it’s my background in the arts and history, and I hold an MFA in Textile Design and Textile History. I had a Fulbright to study traditional weaving in the Andes. I taught at the university level and worked for years as textile conservator at the Metropolitan Museum. So I have a passion for conservation and preservation, traditional architecture and beautiful spaces and landscapes. NFRES: What do you like to do on the North Fork...after selling real estate of course? JM: Whatever spare time I have I still work on my business, Orient Linen Company. I love fabric, good linen and designing my products. Also I enjoy working in my garden, having friends for dinner, making a pie.

NFRES: How would you describe your selling style? JM: Everything I know about sales and customer service, I learned in my shop, selling tea towels. NFRES: What is a typical day like in real estate for you? JM: There’s no typical day in real estate...not for me. I like that. It’s hard work, and very challenging – a real study in human nature. Making more than just sails, this historic Greenport business is an insider resource for all things canvas. The battered sign hanging on the far wall of the Wm. J. Mills and Co. Sailmakers showroom shows its age.‘Established 1880’ it says, the year an enterprising Scottish immigrant named William Mills hung this very shingle outside his freshly-minted workshop in Greenport, which in those years was a commercial fishing hub. Mills quickly distinguished himself for the quality of his work and his sails were much in demand throughout the eastern seaboard. Among his workshop’s most prestigious commissions

were a speed pennant for the steamship the SS United States, which crossed the Atlantic at record speed; sails for the USS Constitution, the 44-gun wooden-hulled three mast frigate of the US Navy; and custom-canvas for those sturdy unsinkable fishing boats called Boston Whalers. (From 1960 to 1996, Mills was the Whalers’ sole canvas supplier). Housed since 1986 in a 15,000 square foot facility just outside the village, the business has grown to encompass far more than sails. In fact, says co-proprietor Robert L. Mills II, the greatgrandson of the founder, sail making represents but a small part

of the company’s activities. Sure, they’ll make a sail for your boat and a good one--Robert Mills, who took his first solo voyage in Hallock Bay, on the northeast edge of Orient Harbor, aged five, is the head sail designer--and their sail loft, where the sails are laid out, is among the biggest on the East End of Long Island---but they also fabricate custom canvas marine products and awnings and such free-standing canvas structures as canopies, shower enclosures, and covers for outdoor kitchens. Bob and his brother, William J. Mills III run the company with practical advice from their not-quite-retired ninety three-yearold father, William J. Mills II. (The latter still comes into work every day). As children, Bob says, the Mills brothers could tie bowlines behind their backs in under four seconds, but they had to wait until their eleventh year to join the family business when they were entrusted with emptying the rubbish bins. Today the two oversee some twenty employees, the longest serving of whom is Greenport native Gil Raynor, who on a recent afternoon was

cutting canvas on a long table. Raynor began as a young apprentice (“Still an apprentice,” he notes. “Just starting to get the hang of it.”) It was around the time, Raynor says dryly, that Columbus and his men arrived in the Americas. (“That would be I967,’” Bob Mills clarifies.) Mills estimates that while the life span of a canvas awning is ten years, a good frame can last forever. Elizabeth Thompson, an architect with offices in Orient and New York City, has commissioned custom awnings and sunshades from the company, some of them of quite complex design. “They always get the work done on time and I’ve never had any of their products wear out,” she says. And for good reason. As Mills notes, “We overbuild everything. Over the years, we’ve recovered awning frames that I installed when I was in my teens. As I always say, ‘I’m a man of the cloth.’”

Otto Schoenstein was chosen by the East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation as the Person of Honor for its 25th Annual Maritime Festival. The following story is from a meeting this writer had with Mr. and Mrs. Schoenstein. Little did he know when he designed and built his first boat at age 11 that the stage was being set for a lifelong adventure of craftsmanship and creations that would touch so many lives. And little did I know when I called him to talk about the Kayak Derby he started for the Maritime Festival 14 years ago I would end up spending a few hours getting the most interesting Greenport history lesson ever. For those who don’t remember, or never knew, The East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation was formed 25 years ago by a tenacious group of Greenporters. This labor of love was created to rebuild the Long Beach Bar Lighthouse, or “Bug Light” as it’s called around here. Among that group was Otto Schoenstein. Otto built the lantern room, and at age 84 can still recount every detail of the construction. It’s truly a work of art. Mr. and Mrs. Schoenstein’s home, a house Otto built, is filled with countless other works of art including hand crafted furniture, model ships (not built from a kit), a full-scale model of Bug Light and what I like to call “painted stories.” One such story recounts, scene by scene, the adventures of 11-year-old Otto finding a working lantern on an abandoned boat and feeling as if he had scored a gem. Only later did he find out that the light was marking the night sky of a hazard to passing boats, and the removal of it caused the sinking of a tug! He smiles and shakes his head when he tells the tale of a naive younger Otto, 36

saying “No one was hurt, of course.” The small lantern still graces the entry post of the Schoenstein home! At every turn, I am suitably impressed with the accomplishments of this man. When the artistic mind is housed in an active craftsman, the possibilities are endless. He has proven that fact time and again. Where others see devastation, Otto sees opportunity. He sees a way to bring things to life. This artistry is reflected in the years of dedicated service he has given to the East End Seaport Museum, The Railroad Museum, The Wildlife Rescue, Cornell Cooperative, Greenport’s blacksmith shop, and countless other projects, not to mention the reconstruction of boat after boat. When Otto shows me how he designed the kayaks for the Maritime Derby, his wife June gently chimes in and reminds him where certain pieces go. He has an exact scale model of the fullsize boats, and June knows its construction as well as he does. I admire the knowing shorthand between them that comes from 62 years of marriage. June tells me “62 years and we have never had an argument.” Otto says, “Yes, but she wins all the fights.” As a kayak enthusiast, I am intrigued and impressed as Otto teaches me the construction and June pours the coffee. We eat cookies, laugh endlessly about the race videos, talk about kids, grandkids and great grandkids. I see the fabric of a well-woven family, the pride and joy of service and hard work. I fully understand the collective community praise about Otto Schoenstein at this moment. He truly is a living legend.
