WELCOME TO THE PUMPKIN PATCH BY ALICE PHILLIPS
T
he summer winds have barely died down and already the East End of Long Island is in full pumpkin mode! Local farms and farm stands are getting ready for the onslaught of pumpkin and apple pickers, cornstalk mazes and Halloween festivities. Please note that social distancing requirements are in effect in most places and openings are subject to weather. Our favorite places include: STAKEYS 270 West Lane, Aquebogue www.stakeyspumpkinfarm.com Open Daily Located on West Lane in picturesque Aquebogue you’ll find Stakeys “Pick Your Own” pumpkin farm. Pick from 18 varieties of pumpkins right off the vine in their 26acre field; there are also mums, cornstalks, flowering cabbage and kale and straw bales for all your fall holiday decorating needs. Admission to the Farm, Country Store and Snack Shack is free; paid attractions include a 3-acre corn maze ($10 per person) and hayrides ($8 per person).

With three locations across the North Fork, there’s fun for the whole family daily — and some evenings as well. The Barnyard Adventure is the paid admission area of Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck; daily admission or season passes are available. Learn about farm animals including sheep and lambs, chickens and chicks, ducks and ducklings, goats and pigs; visit the bee observatories; find your way through the Gnome Maze or the Canna Bulb Flower Field. Weekend offerings include pig races and singing hayride tours. Harbes Orchard offers daily apple picking; on Saturday nights in October, the orchard maze turns into a spooky night adventure with goblins and ghouls. Don’t forget to bring your flashlight. Harbes Family Farm in Jamesport features 9
acres of u-pick pumpkins. Pumpkin picking is by the pound and weekends only; apple picking is $8 per person and the corn maze is $9 per person. Pony rides charged separately. No pets permitted. HELEN’S FLOWER FARM 967 Union Avenue, Aquebogue www.facebook.com/Helens-Flower-Farm Open Daily 9am-5:30pm Tucked away in a corner of Aquebogue just off Route 105, Helen’s Flower Farm is a small family farm geared towards families with small children. Activities include a bounce house and horse drawn wagon rides. Fresh fruit and veggies are available at the farmstand; peruse the acres of flowers in the greenhouses. Admission to the farm is free; pick pumpkins off the vine (pay by the pound), ride the tree train ($5 per ride), and enjoy live music, food (including
local fresh oysters), beverages, wine and hard cider. For the past 5 years, Shamrock has been cultivating a twist on the maze: a maze mapped completely from evergreen trees. While still not complete (it will take a few more years for the trees to reach full height), the maze is reportedly the largest tree maze in the US. For no additional cost, you can wander through the maze paths at your leisure without getting lost!
Featuring a huge playground featuring a castle, an ark and a life size chess board, Windy Acres Farm is a fifth-generation u-pick farm perfect for families and large groups. Fall pickings include pumpkins, multiple apple varieties, squash, tomatoes and other fall produce. THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND, PLAN YOUR STAYCATION AT THESE RESTAURANTS AND WINERIES ALL THE FUN WITH NONE OF THE TRAVEL BY HANNAH SELINGER
SOUTHOLD GENERAL Michelin-starred chef John Fraser has opened his newest North Fork project, Southold General, a one-stop-shop for local produce, excellent coffee, gelato, and even pizza. Like general stores of the past, Southold General is part market, part café, with made-to-order salads, pastries, and homemade focaccia. Fraser has partnered with French pastry chef François Payard, guaranteeing top-notch sweets and baked goods. An online ordering portal allows guests to order seven superlative pizzas online — but a visit to this curated shop is a must for your next North Fork staycation. MCCALL WINES McCall’s recently renovated tasting room is pleasure to spend time in. Reservations are accepted online for any of the winery’s

ooking for a low-key getaway? This fall, instead of hopping on the nearest plane, consider the glories of your very own backyard. The art of the staycation is often overlooked by travelers, but with a host of excellent dining establishments and wineries right here, there’s no reason to deal with the airport. Read on for our favorite picks for a North Fork staycation.
bespoke tastings, available on outdoor picnic benches overlooking the vines. Walk-ins, however, are also available on a first come, first served basis. In addition to wine, McCall serves artisanal cheeses and charcuterie and, on Thursday and Friday evenings, they host a burger night, with burgers made from their own Charolais beef (reservations required for burger night). BRUCE & SON The art of brunch is alive and well in Greenport, where you can get this inbetween meal all day from Thursday through Monday. Seasonal produce dictates Bruce & Son’s broad menu, where you may find an heirloom tomato sandwich on brioche with za’atar mayo; a beetroot toast with pickled green tomatoes and labneh; or even a hotcake served with New York State maple syrup, grass-fed butter, mixed berries, and seeds. The restaurant’s ambitious drink list — boasting both alcoholic and nonalcoholic libations — is reason enough to dip in. Where else on the East End will you find Vietnamese egg coffee, a delicacy served in Hanoi that turns morning coffee into airy morning custard?
SPARKLING POINTE Celebrate your staycation with bubbles — and lots of them. At Southold’s Sparkling Pointe, traditional method sparkling wine is the name of the game. Reservations are required for the winery’s 90-minute tasting experience, a seated experience in which guest can choose from flights of wine, chocolate pairings, caviar service, and even distilled spirits. Eleven sparkling wines are available by the glass, for those looking to experiment with style, color, and flavor profile. Take home a memento from the day with a $10 Sparkling Pointe flute, perfect for the bottle you buy for later. KON-TIKI At Greenport’s Gallery Hotel, get whisked away to a tropical island at Kon-Tiki, an island-y respite from our own island. The pan-Asian-inspired menu features everything from tuna poke with mango, cilantro, and crispy wonton to pork soup dumplings with Thai chilies and scallion. No Tiki-themed establishment would be complete without a well-rounded roster of drinks. Truly transport yourself with the Thai Me Up: Mai Tai-style Agricultural rum, orgeat syrup, pineapple juice, and lime. Vacation starts at home, after all.

The truly outstanding quality of their work is in the exquisite details and craftsmanship of the project...The best way to describe how satisfied we are with this company is that when we purchased our new home in 2020, we knew that based on the quality of their work in 2005, this was the company for us.”

If you have rhododendrons, boxwood or other broadleaved evergreens, spray them with an antidesiccant product to protect them from drying winter winds. For vegetable gardeners, it’s time to clean up the garden when the plants finish producing. If you grew pumpkins or winter squash, harvest them before the first frost. Take down trellises and stakes, clean and store them for next year. Spread compost in empty parts of the garden. Fall can be a time for planting, too. You can plant ornamental grasses and groundcovers, as well as new trees and shrubs. Be sure to water new plants regularly if we don’t get rain. When it’s time to rake fall leaves, if you have kids be sure to leave the piles around for a while for jumping into. Better yet, get the kids to help rake and re-rake the piles for more jumping. When the garden is put to bed, you can start thinking about what new plants to add to your landscape next year.

THE NORTH FORK GETS IN ON THE GROWING CBD MARKET
BD has hit the North Fork with Zeal CBD, a line of products managed by Natasha Van de Wetering of Mattituck and Connie and Joe Arigo of Aquebogue. Ms. Van de Wetering and the Arigos operate GardenWorx Farm and Garden at 1017 Main Road in Aquebogue. GardenWorx offers garden perennials and annuals, lots of sunflowers and Zeal CBD products. Zeal CBD is produced from hemp plants grown by Anton Van de Wetering and Joseph LoSicco and harvested last year from fields along Main Road that now play host to rows and rows of sunflowers. What is CBD exactly? Hemp and marijuana are derived from the same base plant known as cannabis sativa L. Different levels of certain chemical components known as cannabinoids determine whether a plant is considered industrial hemp or marijuana. Marijuana has high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid responsible for the sensation of getting “high”. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the nonintoxicating cannabinoid found in hemp, first grown on this continent by the pilgrims in the 17th century. Hemp arrived on the Mayflower in two forms: as seed for planting and as fiber in the lines and sails of the transport ships. By the 18th century, New York had a thriving hemp industry: hemp fibers were used to make paper, clothing, textiles, rope and other building materials. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp on their plantations; Jefferson invented a special mechanism to better harvest hemp plants. Fun fact: the Declaration of Independence was penned on
18
paper milled from hemp. While hemp remained a staple of the U.S. agricultural and industrial landscape through World War II, hemp production declined and ultimately collapsed in the 20th century for several reasons. The Marijuana Act of 1937 regulated the hemp industry to the detriment of legitimate industrial hemp growers; hemp production further contracted in the 1950s with the introduction of mass-produced synthetic fibers like polyester, which were much more efficient and cost-effective to make. Finally, the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 completely banned hemp production, having designated hemp an illegal controlled substance. It took almost 50 years and a new millennium for the U.S. government to finally recognize the distinction between marijuana and hemp: the 2018 Farm Bill decriminalized hemp and legalized hemp production in all 50 states. As a result, hemp has been under legal cultivation in New York under a special pilot program administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets — the program responsible for the growth and production of hemp right here on the North Fork. And the CBD market is exploding in the US: according to research firm Grandview Research, CBD market size was valued at close to $1 billion in 2020. Hemp has long been known for its healing properties, having been used over the centuries for health and wellness purposes.
BY ALICE PHILLIPS
Due to the lack of psychoactive effects, CBD is most widely used for therapeutic reasons including anxiety and depression treatment, stress relief, diabetes prevention, pain relief, cancer symptom relief, and inflammation. But why take CBD? Natasha Van de Wetering explains that taking CBD is much like taking a multivitamin because the human body has an endocannabinoid system which naturally produces cannabinoids. “Everyone is comfortable taking a multivitamin because your body produces those vitamins naturally. What you may not know is that your body has an endocannabinoid system and naturally produces cannabinoids in your body.” And it’s important to know what goes into your CBD gummy or tincture, Ms. Van de Wetering continues. “Many products on the market are mixed with other ingredients, and consumers are not getting the full dose of CBD because it’s being mixed with other items that you don’t need.” Zeal CBD is coconut oil (used to extract the CBD oil), CBD oil and “a little bit of natural flavoring.” Purchase gummies, oil tincture and topical rub at the farmstand or at www. shopzealcbd.com; no product is priced more than $25. The word “zeal” means enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause — and that’s the mantra and tagline for the Zeal CBD products. “It’s everything we stand for,” says Ms. Van de Wetering. “We want to offer people a holistic alternative to prescription medication that will treat mental and physical discomfort. We are very passionate about what we do, this is our zeal.”
