S

pring on the East End is a most glorious season. The flowers are blooming, the weather is increasingly warmer, and the crowds have not yet begun to descend. Constantly unfolding, and growing more enticing as the days get longer, it’s the time of year when a body practically aches to be outside and experiencing nature at its fullest. Especially when the bounty that surrounds us beckons with the full force of its beauty and beguiling charms. It might not yet be hot enough to bring out the swimsuits yet but it’s plenty seasonable to hit the beach and explore in ways that aren’t possible when the throngs arrive. And from east to west and north to south, here are a few other of the can’t-miss opportunities that should be experienced right now, before the summer season gets underway.

On both the North and South Forks, our public gardens, farms and green spaces are gorgeous, and many are open year-round. In fact, some may argue that springtime brings out the best in these great places. So now’s the perfect time to get some sneak previews of what’s to later come at the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton, LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton, Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton, Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, the Agricultural Center at Charnews Farm in Southold, and many more of our local treasures. Outdoor activities include nature walks, bird watching, photography opportunities, gardening lectures and exploration. And be sure to mark your calendars for a few special upcoming events: Astronomy Night at the Museum at SoFo on March 16; The Vegetable Garden, Step 1: Seeds and Soil at Bridge Garden on April 7; Build a Birdhouse

at Charnews Farm on April 7; the official Rites of Spring season opener at LongHouse on April 28. We are also blessed with a few top-notch wildlife refuges, including the Quogue Wildlife Refuge and the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Quogue, the Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge in Noyac, and The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research Preservation. Upcoming events include Spring Wildlife Camp will be held on April 5 and 6 at Quogue Wildlife Refuge and there will be an Earth Day Celebration at Evelyn Alexander on April 28. Viticulture surely counts as well. Fortunately for us, we’ve got a plethora of vineyards and wineries to choose from out east. Here on the South Fork, there’s Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack, Channing Daughters Winery in Bridgehampton and Duck Walk Vineyards in Water Mill. And on the North Fork, in the heart and soul of Long Island Wine Country, there are close to three dozen grape

growers. Tastings, tours, workshops, live music and even family-focused entertainment abound for all, not just the oenophiles. Springtime can’t come soon enough for lovers of fresh veggies and fruits. Good thing we’ve got farms stands and farmers markets galore. Got a hankering for straight-from-the-soil produce? Pick your favorite farm stand or head to the markets. Nearly every single village and hamlet on both Forks has at least one. The East End also has a plethora of protuberances of the man-made variety—our windmills and lighthouses. Windmills dot the landscape from Southampton to East Hampton and there’s even one on Gardiners Island. And our shining examples of lighthouses dot the coastlines of Montauk, Orient, Greenport, and Southold. Power couple George Stephanopoulos and Ali Wentworth have put their Southampton Village estate back on the market after pulling the listing a couple of years ago. This time the former President Clinton political advisor and his actress wife are asking a million dollars less: a shade under $6 million. Just off Hill Street, the shingle-style mansion built in 2003 boasts five bedrooms including what the listing agents calls a “wondrous first floor master suite with private library.” It is represented by Ann Ciardullo and Keith Green of Sotheby’s International Realty.

Nicolas De-Meyer, a former personal assistant to Goldman Sachs Co-President David Solomon, is accused of stealing more than $1.2 million worth of rare wine from the East Hampton cellar of his boss. The theft was originally reported to local police before the alleged thief was arrested in Los Angeles. Among the stolen wine were seven bottles totaling $133,650 from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, considered one of the best wines in the world.

The price of the “Window House,” a 2,800 square-foot edifice owned by architect Alfredo De Vido, has been lowered to $1,698,000 after half a year on the market. The Northwest Woods structure sited on nearly two acres is thought to exemplify the architect’s aesthetic of “light and livability” as expressed in his book, “House Design: Art and Practice.” The five bedroom, three bath structure boasts double-height ceilings in the living and family rooms. The derelict property that was once a gay nightclub in Wainscott has been purchased by the town of East Hampton. The price paid for the 1.1 acre parcel that housed the rousing disco, Swamp, more than a decade ago was $2.1 million. After demolishing the building, the town will develop plans for the property that will be announced as part of the Wainscott hamlet study and plan.

Disgraced White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, has purchased a new Farrell house with his wife, Deidre Ball, just weeks after they called off their divorce. According to the New York Post, they are planning to spend lots of time in the Hamptons this summer. The abode overlooks a reserve near the home of actor Alan Alda. The 8,300 square-foot abode at 30 Lawrence Court was asking $7.49 million, a mere drop in the bucket for the Mooch, whose net worth is estimated at $1.5 billion by Coed.com. The couple also owns a house in the North Sea Beach Colony where they held “raucous parties” last summer according to a neighbor. Welcome to the Hamptons Mooch!

on’t you just love it when favorites from the past return to make the future just a wee bit better? It’s happening soon for one of our legendary locals and we couldn’t be happier about it. What’s old is new again, in the very best way, for East Hampton’s Candice Bergen. The Emmywinning actress is probably not strapping on her memorable shoulder pads, but she is gearing up to play her most famous character, “Murphy Brown,” for a CBS reboot of the wildly poplar and groundbreaking television show from the 1980s and ‘90s. The updated version of the classic sitcom will focus on the title character’s millennial son, Avery, whose birth viewers might remember caused quite the commotion back in the day. Picked up for 13 episodes so far, which are set to air later this year on CBS, Ms. Bergen will be joined by former cast mates Faith Fork, Joe Regalbuto and Grant Shaud, as well as the original series creator, Diane English. The original show aired from 1988 to 1998 and was nominated for 62 Emmy Awards, winning 18, as well as earning three Golden

Globes, two Directors Guild Awards and two Writers Guild Awards. Since “Murphy Brown” ended, Ms. Bergen has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including “Sex and the City,” “Boston Legal,” “Miss Congeniality” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” to name a few. Of late, she’s gained additional success in a wholly new medium—as a painter of pets on purses. Clients such as Barbra Streisand and Lena Dunham have commissioned her acrylic works on designer handbags, with proceeds donated to charity. East Hampton rocker Jon Bon Jovi, who will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in April, is also busy getting his side hustle on too. He and his son, Jesse Bongiovi, along with French winemaker Gérard Bertrand, are launching a rosé wine called Diving into Hampton Water. The wine, which “captures the spirit shared between the Hamptons and the South of France,” according to Bertrand, is said to be “crisp, refreshing, quaffable and well suited for drinking in the sun, poolside or beachside.” Retailing for $25 a bottle, the wine hit shelves stateside in February. Speaking of adult beverages and talented moguls, Jimmy Buffett’s signature drink now has its own Broadway show. The North Haven resident— known for his catchy tunes, laid-back attitude and food- and beverage-based empire—is making his “Escape to Margaritaville” debut on the big boards. The show, which tells the tale of a singing bartender named Tully, opens on March 15 at the Marquis Theatre in Manhattan. It features original and classic songs by Buffett, such as “Fins,” “Volcano” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

Fans of the surprisingly literary kids lit “Lemony Snicket” series, and of East Hampton’s Neil Patrick Harris, will be happy to see that the Netflix televised take on the 13-volume epic tale starts back up on March 30. But, alas, we have to gird ourselves against the bad news that “A Series of Unfortunate Events” is ending far too soon. Mr. Harris, who plays Count Olaf and is also a producer of the show, has confirmed that season three will be the show’s last. The final episode, aptly titled “The End,” will bring us to the end of the sad tale of the Baudelaire orphans. Sniff, sniff. On a happier note, did anybody else notice that Cathy Moriarty recently showed up on NBC’s blockbuster “This Is Us?” The Hampton Bays resident appeared in a blink-and-you-might-missher-but-of-course-you-could-never-forget-herdistinctively-smoky-voice role in “The Super Bowl” episode in early February. Fingers crossed that we get to see, and hear, more of this talented lady soon. And travelers to NYC on the Long Island Rail Road who stop happen to prick up their ears and pay attention whilst waiting for the train should notice another familiar voice. That’s right, it’s Amagansett’s own Matthew Broderick imploring you to please not smoke on the platform. Good! Want to hear and see more Mr. Broderick? We’re all in luck, as the former “Ferris Bueller” is set to star in the Irish Repertory Theatre’s production of “The Seafarer.” Performances begin on March 30, and opening night is set for April 18. To poorly paraphrase the actor’s most famous quote: Get your tickets now, because life moves pretty fast and we certainly don’t want to miss this.

I

nterior designer Kim Radovich says “As a kid your family decides who you are. I was the artist in the family.” As such, she was sent to the School of Art and Design in Manhattan. Afterwards she attended the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts and finally Parsons, where she studied interior design. Her background in art “informs everything I do. I also have an appreciation for the decorative arts and all sorts of architecture.” She cut her teeth in interior design on Long Island’s “Gold Coast,” where she worked on many an old manor house. “My greatest joy is saving an old dowager from being torn down.They were built with so much thought and attention to detail. If you have an understanding [of these places] it’s a wonderful reference to bring with you to new spaces.” Radovich, who is President-elect of the ASID New York Metro Chapter, is based in Huntington Bay, but works extensively in the city, Florida and the Hamptons. Besides residential design, she is equally prolific with commercial projects – from law offices to spas – where her work is sleek and contemporary. The designer is nothing if not a perfectionist. Before she does any decorating she first sees that all finishes are up to par from floors to wall surfaces to moldings, whose profiles must be “ample and clean.” “I cannot tell you how many times I have to bring my own people in to fix walls that aren’t prepared properly.” Her next step is space planning. Here’s where she determines how a family navigates the house so that the space flows properly and the furniture is the correct scale. It is also the stage at which she helps her clients “find their aesthetic.” For an empty nest couple who moved from Cold Spring Harbor to a year-round house in Southampton, she faced “a bit of a challenge” when they asked her to incorporate some of their traditional furnishings while making the feel of the home modern. “The kitchen is a perfect example of where I had to honor their aesthetic. Instead of that chic Hamptons modern look, it was more country, a little French.” All the better for displaying the owners’ collection of dishes. For the wife’s vanity Radovich switched out its silk skirt and had it redressed in a more contemporary linen with tailored dressmaker’s pleats. “It’s still feminine,” she says. “but not froufrou.” “The dining table is not what I would have chosen for the space, but the client had had it made and loved it,” says Radovich. The designer’s solution was to customize the dining chairs. The legs worked with the table’s wood while the chairs were fully upholstered in a transitional style except for a skirt that acted as “a nod to the traditional.”

The upholstery was made of ivory Crypton®, a resilient indoor/outdoor fabric that Radovich uses a lot, especially when working with young families with children. “If your palette is ivory or white, with all these new fabrics the world is your oyster.” A Bit of French Country Flair

She is also a big fan of wallcoverings. “The moment you install it half the decorating is done for you,” she says. “It completes the space much more effectively than paint by adding texture or pattern. As soon as the wall covering is up, before even the window treatments are up, the space feels cozier. It feels like home.” One place Radovich enjoys going bold with wall coverings is in powder rooms “where you can have fun,” she says. “You can create a wow space that puts a smile on your guests’ faces.” In the Southampton house she used a large urchinlike pattern in the powder room, by Celerie Kemble for Shumacher, breaking an old rule against large patterns in small spaces. “Lots of rules can be broken, as long as you know how to.” In the same house, there were rooms where she employed a “feature wall,” usually a wall behind the bed. In one room, she installed a navy blue raffia wall. “It was very dramatic and beautiful, but I don’t do it often.” Why? “It’s a little bit trendy and I like classic design that transcends fads.” She likens classic to owning a little black dress. “You spend a lot of money on it but it lasts you a decade.” A home’s interior design should also be changed every ten years. “Have a foundation of good pieces and have fun jazzing it up with beautiful accessories.“

As for the outdoors, Radovich waxes enthusiastic about “so many amazing materials” such as “anodized aluminum that looks like wood” and “beautiful teak for an organic aesthetic.” Outside, where open spaces are not confined by walls “you have to create your own living spaces so you can be more creative.” She creates boundaries with plantings, furniture and draperies. “Pool houses are a big deal now.” She has been known to make outdoor spaces that “look like the Beverly Hills Hotel” replete with black and white stripes and hibiscus bushes aplenty.

WHAT’S TRENDING ARCHITECTURALLY IN THE HAMPTONS LOCAL ARCHITECTS SHARE THEIR VISIONS FOR 2018 BLAZE MAKOID The folks at Blaze Makoid Architecture in Bridgehampton are currently working with several clients with serious art collections – not an easy task when you’re dealing with glass houses. The obvious reason, of course, is that there’s not a lot of wall space on which to hang art. But there’s also the problem of all that light shining through and damaging the paintings. “We do computer daylight studies to see where sunlight hits at what time of day,” says firm principal Blaze Makoid. “We can pick any hour of any day of the year and hit a button and it tells us where the sunlight is hitting.” This is especially helpful if, let’s say a piece can’t be in direct sunlight. “We think very hard about what happens at what time of day,” he continues, “and that thought process does not just relate to art placement. It colors every facet of designing spaces where people live. In one home currently being redesigned “the kitchen is like a pass-through with people eating at all times of day.”

Thus, to separate themselves from the constant chaos, the family chose to take their main meals at a separate formal dining room on the other side of the house. Not a problem when there is staff at your beck and call.

MODERN SHELTER At Modern Shelter in Sag Harbor husband and wife team Grayson and Heidi Jordon are noticing a trend toward homes that are both less ostentatious and a little smaller. “There’s more respect for energy efficiency and sustainability,” says Grayson. “A smaller house is kinder to the planet.” Thus, the architects are employing such energyefficient solutions as solar panels, geothermal heating systems and greater degrees of insulation. Another way they help save environmental resources is to position rooms like the kitchen and bedrooms so that they “make the best use of natural lighting,” says Heidi. Not only does that “enhance the experience”

of living in those rooms, it also reduces the use of artificial light.

“A smaller house is kinder to the planet.” – Grayson Jordon “People are viewing their homes here as an escape from their busy city lives, not replicas,” says Grayson. “We are building homes as sanctuary, as a retreat to a simpler life.” How the architects achieve that is to take advantage of the “pleasing views and breezes.” To continually remind their clients that they are surrounded by natural beauty “We’re pulling walls away as much as possible.” Glass is good, of course, but not too much as it’s not energy efficient.

ANTHONY VERMANDOIS Sag Harbor architect, Anthony Vermandois, specializes in historic renovations, but he is finding more and more clients asking for modern or transitional style homes. While these days he is busy helping to restore the dilapidated Sag Harbor “Morpurgo” house on Union Street, he is concurrently working on modern structures. (Note:You’ve probably read about that edifice behind the Sag Harbor library. The 1850s built Italianate edifice, named after a pair of sisters who allowed it to decompose, needed a total gut renovation. A developer has finally stepped in to finance its resurrection.) Vermandois also designed a stunning Greek Revivalstyle home on the village’s Eastville Street, where another long abandoned residence was completely unsalvageable. Greek Revival is typical of the former whaling center. He has nothing against it in that context. “It’s in the middle of the historic district so we couldn’t plop down a modern house even if we wanted to.”

But elsewhere in the Hamptons “Everyone got bored with traditional,” he says, “It used to be that new construction was a double gable, Shingle Style home but those have rapidly gone out of style.” Homeowners are now asking for either transitional, which “still maintains the vocabulary of traditional – gable roof, H-shape floor plan – but he is adding “a lot more glass especially in back and cathedral ceilings.” His modern projects with open floor plans, flat roofs and bi-fold glass doors are fairly new for him. “I wouldn’t say clients are looking for a radically different idea of how to live in a house,” he says. “Everybody still wants every bedroom ensuite, a junior suite on the first floor, an eat-in kitchen. The programming hasn’t changed, the styling has.”

hen it comes to the rehabilitation of important houses in the Hamptons, celebrities come out of the woodwork to help. So was the case this past summer when such local luminaries as Cindy Sherman, Larry Gagosian, Kim Cattrall and Nicole Miller manned the committee for a benefit to fund East Hampton’s Thomas Moran House. The event allowed partygoers to get a sneak peek at the structure, which was nearing the end of a painstaking restoration. (Restoration officially ended in December and the house will open to the public in early June.)

After building their home on Main Street in 1884, Moran and his wife, Mary Nimmo Moran – famous in her own right as an etcher and landscape painter – lived in it several months a year while not on expeditions to far flung locales – places where “god and nature were obvious,” according to East Hampton Historical Society Curator Richard Barons. The couple lived there until their deaths and are buried across the street in the South Side Cemetery nestled next to the town pond.

When the Morans arrived in town “the community was very excited,” says Barons. And the Morans were quite involved locally. An early member of the Maidstone Club, Thomas raised funds for the institution.

“The Moran house was the first purpose-built artist’s studio in the Hamptons and they had a ball including fancy-dress parties, a sea monster weather vane, and an ornate Venetian gondola launched on Hook Pond,” says Frank Newbold, an agent at Sotheby’s International Realty. “We should all be proud to have the studio restored as a center for East Hampton’s artistic and cultural community.”

Artist Thomas Moran (1837–1926), himself, was also a superstar in his day. A painter of the Hudson River School, he was best known for his landscapes of the American West, especially his canvases of Grand Canyon and Yellowstone – a then

The main room in the house – a grand affair with high ceilings and huge windows – was not used as a living room, but rather as the artists’ studio. As such, it contained little furniture. What we can see in photographs are Moorish lamps, a Chinese fern stand and an ornately carved Indian marriage chest that they brought back from their travels. Many of the house’s built-ins were scavenged from

A subsequent owner Condie Lamb, who established an eponymous real estate agency in 1963 that was purchased in 2016 by Compass, worked to get the home declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. When she died in 2004 she bequeathed the structure to Guild Hall, which in turn deeded the property, which had fallen into severe disrepair, to the Thomas Moran Trust in 2008. “It is hard to imagine the poor state of the house when I first approached it about five years ago,” says Barons. “The floors were rotten; the ceilings exposed wet wooden lath. The weathered exterior shingles clapped against the walls when there was a wind. The roof leaked and when it rained, water gushed out of the studio’s fireplace like spilling from an overturned bucket. A floundering sagging Victorian folly that seemed unrepairable.” An education committee will determine the exhibits to take place in the edifice, which has been returned to its former glory.

Colorful Tulips Reign Over Your Garden

I

n flower gardens and landscapes, spring begins with bulbs. Here on the East End some of the earliest—and most welcome—color in our landscapes and gardens comes from bulbs. Their bright, warm colors bursting forth after the long cold winter—like the one we’ve had this year—are balm for the spirit, showing us that spring is coming at last. These bulbs are planted in fall, but in spring when they’re blooming is the time to think about where to plant more for next spring’s display. Bulbs are wonderful planted in masses where their early color delights the eye after a too-long winter of bare branches and short, gray days. Clumps of bulbs along a sidewalk, in the front of a foundation bed, or scattered through a perennial garden will brighten the early spring scene. Imagine the glorious sight of a mass of golden daffodils or brilliant red tulips when the trees are just sending out their first new leaves. For a little work to plant them in fall, bulbs give you a big reward in spring. The earliest bulbs to bloom are snowdrops and species forms of crocuses, which poke through the ground in March or even February, depending on the weather. These earliest bloomers flower mostly in yellow, white and purple. In fact, yellow and white are much in evidence in spring, as crocuses are

followed by the flowers of daffodils and narcissus. Dutch hybrid crocuses —the most familiar kind— have chalice-shaped flowers in shades of deep purple, yellow, yellow-orange and white. The plants grow 4 to 6 inches tall and they’re the first flowers to bloom in many East End gardens. Daffodils and narcissus are delightful in beds and borders. Plant them (in fall) wherever you’ll be sure to see their welcome flowers in spring. And a big plus for so many East End flower gardeners —deer don’t eat them. There are various types of narcissus and daffodils, all of which have a central “cup” surrounded by a ring of outer petals, but there are several basic types, and many variations within them. Trumpet narcissus, which we call daffodils, have flowers with a central cup, or trumpet, surrounded by a ring of flat petals. The flowers may be all yellow, all white, bicolored, or may have a yellow or orange trumpet and white outer petals. They may have yellow outer petals and an orange, yellow or salmon-pink cup. In small-cupped narcissus flowers the cup is smaller and shorter than the length of the petals. There are also double-flowered varieties with twice the number of petals. The other big player among spring bulbs is tulips, the queen of many spring flower gardens. There are thousands of tulip varieties available today. A

tremendous selection of heights, colors and blooming times is available, as well as several different flower forms. Tulips bloom in many warm colors, in shades of yellow from soft cream to rich gold, salmon, orange, peach, red, light and dark pink, pale to deep rose, purples and even a dramatic deep maroon-black one called Queen of the Night. There are bicolored tulips striped or feathered or flamed with a second color. There are tulips in soft pastel shades, vibrant jewel tones and dramatic bi-colors. Some have fringed, curled or twisted petals. If you don’t have deer issues on your property, you can choose tulips for your garden that harmonize or contrast, whose colors whisper softly in the landscape or make a bold, dramatic statement. They can range in height from 8 inches to 2 feet or more. If you can keep the deer off your premises, with high perimeter fencing and tall, sturdy gates, plantings of graceful tulips can be a symphony of color in spring. Mass them in beds and borders, or buy pots of tulips when you see them in the garden center and group them on your deck or porch. When the show is over, toss them. Many tulips have to be treated like annuals and planted anew anyway. But they are undeniably wonderful, as is the most welcome return of springtime.
