author Colson Whitehead has earned two big-time honors for his latest book, “Underground Railroad.” He was recently awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the tome, which has also been optioned by “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins for a limited series on Amazon. Singer songwriter Paul Simon might not like to live on the edge but it appears that his Montauk house does. The multiple Emmy Awardwinning actor, activist, philanthropist and producer was handed a doctor of fine arts during the school’s 57th commencement program earlier this month, in recognition of his tireless work on behalf of his Michael J. BUSY SUMMER SEASON PREDICTED PRICE REDUCTIONS MAKE IT A GOOD TIME TO BUY

s the 2017 summer season kicks off, another busy year is expected for Hamptons real estate both in rentals and sales. Rentals are trending towards monthly rather than full season, while sales are already better than last year. Amagansett, Sag Harbor, Water Mill, and Bridgehampton are hot. Waterfront is in very high demand, while new construction is active. In select areas of the market, prices are rising slightly, while inventory is decreasing. Predictions are for a good year in Hamptons real estate.

Martha Gundersen of Brown Harris Stevens says, “The 2017 rental season is similar to last year with the early birds getting rentals ahead of time. Now July and full season rental requests are coming in. Sales have been better than last year. Amagansett, Sag Harbor,

and the Water Mill/Bridgehampton area South of the Highway are the most active. It’s an excellent time to buy new construction from a year or two ago, as material, labor, and land are all going up. Home prices have come down quite a bit and inventory is moving, but there is still a lot of inventory, especially in the rental markets.” Martha believes,“Barring any negative, major political event all signs point to a great year.” Judi Desiderio of Town & Country Real Estate says, “Where Memorial Day to Labor Day rentals used to be the norm and monthly rentals the exception, just the reverse is today’s trend. As for sales, January was one of the best in several years, February stayed strong, then March activity slid a bit due to inclement weather – but the closings for 2017 will trump 2016! Under

My highest rental this season so far was $1.2M. I have had quite a few closings $10M and over and have 7 signed contracts totaling over $70M in sales so far this year. Any waterfront is very hot! Although there seems to be quite a lot of spec houses and inventory for sale, builders are still building! There have been quite a lot of price reductions and it is a good time to buy, as

prices won’t go up until inventory starts to deplete!” Susan remarks,“I have no doubt it is going to be a very busy spring and summer for Hamptons real estate.” Janice Hayden of Halstead Property says, “The rental market is going well. Instead of the typical Memorial Day to Labor Day, rentals are only for one month such as July or August. Sales are up over 2016. Homes under $2M went through a good run from 2016 into 2017 and inventory for homes under $1.5M is down. Homes with pools and a nice yard still rule, as do homes closer to villages. New construction is still desirable – though inventory is up, so are the prices.” Janice observes, “The market is improving and the low interest rates make it the best time to buy. I see 2017 being a good year and the market will continue to improve.”

ere on the East End we’re all about summer. While all four seasons have their particular beauty, summer is the peak, when the bay and ocean waters are warm and inviting, and we can throw open our windows to the soft summer air. In summer decks and patios become extensions of our homes. We cook there, dine there, relax there. We furnish our outdoor living areas with tables and chairs, lounges, lights and fire pits and heaters for chilly evenings. Plants are welcome, too. Many of us move our houseplants outdoors in summer—mine always thrive there and become rejuvenated after spending the winter indoors. Just as landscaping adds beauty and value to our properties, plants can enhance our decks and patios. They soften the lines of outdoor structures like railings and stairs, and bring their colors right up close to where you sit. It feels good to sit among plants. Their greenery is soothing—did you know that green is the most restful color to the human eye? Their colorful flowers and heavenly fragrances make your deck feel like a tiny bit of paradise. You can scatter plants randomly around your deck, of course, but you can also create a real feeling of landscape there, your own little Eden to escape to or entertain

in whenever you like. If you really want to make a statement, you can color-coordinate your deckscape with the landscape on your property. Or, you can turn the deck or patio into a little world of its own, perhaps a tropical paradise bursting with bright, hot colors.

together for visual impact. For a lush look, start with tall centerpiece plants, add bushy plants for volume, then add smaller filler and accent flowers, and include cascading and trailing plants to spill over the edges of the planters.

First, some basics. One problem with decks is hiding the space underneath them. You can screen off the bottom of the deck with lattice panels or trelliswork. Shrubs can provide excellent screening around a deck. If the deck is very close to the ground, use spreading junipers, cotoneasters, carpet roses or other sprawling plants. Use upright but relatively low growers such as azaleas, spiraea, hypericum or Knock Out roses around decks not far off the ground. For higher decks plant taller shrubs such as rhododendron, viburnum, upright junipers or hollies, or shrub roses. If you use the deck or patio only in summer, ornamental grasses can provide an easy-care screen for the warm months.

Key the pots and plants to your garden’s color scheme, picking up colors from the house trim and beds and borders. Container plants can produce all sorts of looks. You could create a tropical paradise, or maybe you’d like to pretend you have your own little meadow, with containers of wildflowers and grasses. For a contemporary home, a Zen garden featuring a quiet composition of plants with simple, angular shapes in beautifully glazed pottery, perhaps enhanced by a trickling water spout or fountain, can create a serene feeling. Also consider the growing conditions on your deck or patio, in addition to a color scheme, when selecting plants. Is the deck sunny or shady? Will you be there to water every day in summer, or do you need very drought-tolerant plants in your pots (or someone to come in and water when you’re not there)? Bear in mind that large pots dry out more slowly than smaller ones. Decorating your deck with plants might just unleash your creativity. You get to enjoy the results all summer long, and next year you can refine your design or create a whole different look!

Of course, a deck isn’t complete without some potted plants. You can plant in rectangular planter boxes built right onto the deck that can be reused year after year. You can also group containers of plants, large and small, to create a garden effect. Combine lots of plants in large tubs, bowls, and planter boxes, or group smaller pots

utdoor living is in vogue. Whether a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, hidden speaker system, graceful pergola, or gorgeous garden, your outdoor space adds another dimension to your Hamptons lifestyle. The trend now is towards more natural design with aesthetics in mind. Choose neutral colored sofas or wooden garden sculptures, or a repurposed bench from natural cedar branching. Use minimal soft lighting. Combine traditional with contemporary styles and exotic plants with natives. Large and small planters with colorful flowers beautifully frame an outdoor room. Lighting using iron lanterns around patio furniture, or hanging light fixtures from tree branches illuminates outdoor spaces. Compliment the garden with garden sculptures made from fiberglass, iron, or wood. Blend exotic plants with natives for unusual landscapes. Create long borders by planting the same species of flowers, shrubs or trees for repetition of color, texture, and shape. Best known for his early work constructing weekend houses for wealthy industrialists, this late great architect was also an innovator in the world of pre-fab construction. During his lifetime, the celebrated architect conceived of more than 100 major projects— from his storied estates to thoughtfully considered urban planning. His grand style lives on here on the East End, and on the pages of at least one seminal Hamptons coffee table book.

This architect’s name is synonymous with the Beaux Arts beauties he designed. Embracing the “American Renaissance” style, through his well-known firm, his work is celebrated from the South Fork to

Newport. Lesser known is the fact that his last work, a major departure, was a contribution to Nicola Tesla’s Wardenclyffe Tower in Shoreham. This son of a theater scholar (who had no money but great connections) was prone to dramatic visual statements in his residential and institutional commissions, and regarded as conquest collector in his personal life. He made what might be his biggest lasting mark in lower Manhattan, though some say his death—resulting in “the trial of the century” of the time—nearly eclipsed his life’s work.

This prolific architect made a name for himself designing structures in harmony with humanity and the environment. The organic architecture pioneer is the father of the Usonian home and a leader of the Prairie School movement. Often referred to as “the greatest American architect of all time,” his colorful life and romantic adventures landed him in the headlines nearly as much as his iconic work.

Sculptural beach houses were this architect’s stock in trade. His modest but distinctive beach homes were

Multiple examples of his quirky work grace the East End, from the oceanfront shore in Westhampton to an entire community in Montauk. In addition to his super-modern mid-century work, this architect’s legacy lives on through his connection to the great “Kitchen Debate” over the merits of capitalism versus socialism.

Still living and producing monumental work, this architect and abstract artist revels in making bold statements. The East Hampton resident’s minimalist geometric designs make prominent use of the color white—as evidenced at his Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Saltzman House here in East Hampton. So sure is it that his playfully original architecture will stand the test of time, his alma mater named a professorship after him. veryone has heard of or knows Tim Davis of The Corcoran Group - one of the top producing agents here in the Hamptons, but have you met Tim’s newest team member, Thomas P. Davis? Yes, I too thought they were related, but no, that is not the case - as it was luck that brought these two together. After a chance meeting in the fall of 2015, Tim saw something in Thomas and decided he would make a great addition to his team. HRES: Where did you grow up and what college did you graduate from? TPD: I grew up on Eastern Long Island and attended SUNY Geneseo and graduated from Stony Brook University. HRES: Why did you become a real estate agent? TPD: My family has been involved in the business of stone sourcing for homes throughout the Hamptons for many years. I grew up spending time out here and always knew that I would somehow be connected to the real estate market in some way. I have a passion for architecture and love thinking of ways to improve homes and, at the same time, connecting people to these properties. HRES: How did you come to start working with Tim Davis? TPD: I met Tim while he was dining with his wife Susan at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor and found that there were synergies to our life path. MOLD IS A FOUR-LETTER WORD APRIL SHOWERS CAN BRING MYCOTOXINS BY BREE HOLLANDER

W

e love being surrounded by our beautiful waterways, but with so much moisture comes mold. More of our homes are infiltrated with the evil little mycotoxins than you think. “I am alarmed at how many homeowners don’t keep basement dehumidifiers going year-round,” says Debra Scott, an agent with Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “Basements are a mold breeding ground.” These mold spores can cause illness, with symptoms similar to those of Lyme infections. Think: respiratory issues, rashes, headaches and fatigue, to name a few. Mold can also be detrimental to the selling price of your house. “Before you put your house on the market, be sure to check out the most likely locations for mold: under sinks, in basements, crawlspaces, and attics,” says mold remediation expert Steve Levy of Certified Mold Inspections. “You can easily be risking tens of thousands of dollars by failing to deal with a mold problem before you put your home on the market.” The bad news is, no matter how clean the home is all homes can be susceptible to a mold problem, especially if there are water events that are left untreated. If you suspect mold infiltration (things smell musty or you’ve had a leak), you will want to hire a Certified Mold Inspector (CMI) like Levy who, with a wealth of technology, will assess mold infiltration and customize a remediation strategy.

Visual Inspection A mold assessment begins with a visual inspection of not only walls, ceilings and ventilation systems, but also cardboard boxes and books. “Environments that are overly cluttered or filled with dirt and dust can harbor and promote mold growth,” says Levy. Infrared Test Since moisture intrusion is often invisible, an infrared camera can detect temperature differences that may indicate hidden water or moisture infiltration. Moisture Meter This is used to map out potential hidden moisture. Remediation Removal of the mold and its sources.You can’t just kill mold, you also need to remove it, according to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. While it’s actually a myth that your home can be completely free of mold, it is also true that even if you can see only a small amount of mold it could be the tip of the iceberg. Says Levy: “What could be harboring behind wall and ceiling cavities could be much more extensive than you actually see. Mold is nothing more than a symptom of water and moisture intrusion.”

HOW TO PREVENT MOLD • Any time you notice a water event such as a leak dry out the area within 48 hours. • Maintain ongoing visual inspections to check on plumbing leaks such as under sinks or outside intrusion from windows. Tubs should be sealed completely. • Climate control. Keep your home between 30 and 50 percent humidity. You can measure by relative humidity gauges. • Keep your washing machine door ajar to let it dry out naturally.You don’t want mold on your clothes. • Anyplace that remains damp and unventilated is a potential mold-forming zone. “Anywhere water travels” in a structure is vulnerable to mold, says Austin Reid, co-owner of Mold Masters in Southern California.

HOW TO CLEAN SURFACE MOLD • Dilute with water such disinfectants as bleach, Borax, vinegar, ammonia and tea tree oil. • A baking soda spray works well with upholstery. • Wear rubber gloves, goggles and some sort of mask.The EPA recommends an N-95 respirator.

AN ARTIST’S PATH NEILL SLAUGHTER TRAVELS TO PAINT BY HEATHER BRYCE

I

t can be a challenge to identify a work by Neill Slaughter because of the diverse nature of his work. The world-renowned artist, who lives in an 1890 Victorian house in Southampton Village, has drawn and painted a wide range of subject matter — from plein-air landscapes/seascapes to scenes of social commentary based on his travels in third world countries throughout his four-decade career.

During four decades of teaching art at the university level, Slaughter has traveled throughout the world to teach, conduct research and create art. His extensive forays have influenced his works, which often reflect the social conditions of his surroundings. His many fellowships include a Scottish Arts Council Grant, an LMU Research Grant to Africa and a Fulbright Fellowship to India.

Throughout his life, beginning with his childhood in Annapolis, Maryland as well as time spent in such nautical places as Galveston, Hilton Head Island and the Virgin Islands, he has maintained a fascination with the sea. Early on he spent a summer in an historic English harbor village “drawing the ebb and flow of tidal life.”

In his social commentary pieces the artist often contrasts like with unlike to dramatically make a point. In his Africa America Amalgamation series he compared urban American culture to rural African societies. In his 1980s diptych Dance Fever he portrayed a bacchanalian revelry at Studio 54 alongside Zulus performing a fertility dance. “I was essentially upsetting the stereotypical notion that whatever is equated with the term “civilized” is generally thought of as better or more progressive than that labeled “uncivilized.”

Slaughter not only paints his seascapes where he lives, though Southampton has been a primary inspiration, he also takes his easel to such favorite locations as the beaches of Maine. Because of the changing nature of plein-air painting, he aims to quickly capture the essence of what is being portrayed to achieve “a sense of urgency and spontaneity in the brushwork.” 118

His Civilization Sinking is a metaphor for his encounters in India. “I found the country a study in contrasts that assault one’s senses at nearly every turn,” he says. “I was perplexed as to why the country

would not save the crumbling ruins of this historically significant temple that was slowly sinking into the Ganges, the holy river where literally millions make a pilgrimage to cleanse their soul in some of the most polluted water on Earth.” In a self-portrait called Looking Back, which he created for a mid-career retrospective in 2008, “the title both literally and symbolically refers to my looking back on three decades of my art career.” In his most recent work the artist is once again juxtaposing scenes of pure nature that have not been manipulated by man with cityscapes of Manhattan, such as the Queensborough Bridge painting seen here. Slaughter has had more than 30 solo exhibits of his drawings and paintings and participated in more than 80 national and international group exhibitions. His art has been reviewed by leading periodicals and is in numerous public and private collections throughout the world, including Joan Irvine Fine Arts collection in Irvine, California and New York Academy of Medicine, NYC.
