SAVED BY THE TOWN Topping Farm in Sagaponack, one of the Hamptons’ most glorious properties, is being purchased by the town of Southampton. Well, 12 acres anyway. The rest of the 16 acre parcel is being held onto by the seller as a potential building lot. The sale prevents builders from swooping in and developing the threeacre zone.The price of the land, currently being used to farm potatoes and distill vodka, was $1M an acre.
While one was for a California residence, the other was for a house on Old Orchard Lane in East Hampton. In an innovative move the firm inserted a “tube” to bisect the structure, creating an entry above the floor and setting up visual alignment with a pool house. It also installed small glass bridges to keep with its wood and glass theme and meant to contrast warmly with the cool aluminum skin of the building.
MOVE OVER AIRBNB Another vacation home-rental company is eyeing the Hamptons, according to the New York Post. And with a recent infusion of $103.5M it has more than enough moolah to make giant ripples in the market. More full service than its competitors, the Portland Oregon-based Vacasa not only manages the rentals and reservations for its wealthy homeowners, it also provides housekeeping and maintenance services. “Over the past year, the company expanded to Hawaii, Tennessee, Montana and South Carolina by becoming a licensed real estate agency in those markets.”
HOLD THE ANCHOVIES Anthony Sbarro has sold his Southampton estate for its last asking price of $24M. The two-acre spread on Pleasant Lane in the Murray compound with a 15,700 square-foot, 9 bedroom house had asked $32 million in 2016. He purchased the property for $10.26M in 2014. The house, which was one of the last projects of late architect Frances Fleetwood, features a dance studio – we’re not quite sure why as the owner never lived in the property – instead moving into a waterfront property he bought afterward. Harald Grant of Sotheby’s International Realty brought the buyer. Listing agents were Erica Grossman and Michaela Keszler of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

house on the market for $12M. In less time than you can say “Keep your hands off me!” the beleaguered titan has pulled the property, listed only in July, off the market. Maybe he’ll keep it as a refuge from the tsunami of negative press.

R E A LT Y C H E C K PEARLS BEFORE SWINE A series of oyster farms is ruining the seascapes, claim some homeowners on Gardiner’s Bay in Amagansett. As 5 and 10 acre areas have been relegated to floating aquaculture from Promised Land to Devon and extending to the Napeague Harbor Inlet, according to the East Hampton Star, residents feel “blindsided.” Members of the Devon Yacht Club have also complained to the county, which issues the leases, about “vested property rights, historical access, and far-reaching navigability, among other issues.” But, say proponents, such farms are actually a boon to both the local water quality – bivalves not only filter the water that passes through them, but also augment the spawning potential of native populations – and shellfish industry. BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND Southampton Town is taking a small step toward eliminating those noise-polluting gas-powered leaf blowers that are the bane of Hamptonites’ ears. “The town’s Parks Department has been working in cooperation with Quiet Communities, a Massachusettsbased nonprofit that is focused on protecting the environment by reducing the nation’s reliance on noisy and polluting industrial-grade outdoor maintenance equipment,” according to 27 East. “We have to lead by example if we expect landscapers to switch to electric,” Councilwoman Christine Scalera told the paper. The town’s goal is to transform all town-maintained parks and grounds into Green Zones – where maintenance is completed using quiet and emissions-free electric equipment or manual techniques (think rakes). The town is following the lead of the East Quogue Village Green, which was designated as the first Certified Green Zone outside of California this past Spring. 1947 SAG HARBOR UPDATE Media power couple Bill Wackermann, CEO of top model agency Wilhelmina International (and former publisher of Conde Nast Traveler), and Mark Tevis, publisher of the Daily Front Row Group, have put their Sag Harbor home on the market for $3.1 million, according to Gimme Shelter in the New York Post. The vintage 4 bedroom, 4 bath 1947 clapboard farmhouse at 182 Hampton Street has been renovated in a “chic modern” style and includes a formal dining room, new pool and pool cabana on just shy of an acre. TERRIFIC TRANSITIONAL KRISTEN FARRELL GIVES THIS WATER MILL TRADITIONAL A MODERN FEEL BY HEATHER BRYCE
W
hen you think of a typical Farrell house, you think ‘traditional.’ However, that paradigm has shifted. Take one of their latest projects: 47 Crescent Avenue in Water Mill. While at first glance the shingled exterior might shout “traditional,” there are decidedly dramatic modern touches such as the arched glass front door and a column of bay windows, which are both framed in edgy black steel. It’s all in the firm’s mandate to make their properties “fresh and current” while retaining the “architectural theme of the Hamptons” according to Kristen Farrell, company vice president and wife of founder, Joe Farrell. While the Farrell Building Co. is known for its grand double-height foyers, this one is lined with a patchwork of bleached white oak panels and hung with an Arteriors chandelier that resembles the Sputnik, both further winks at modernism. “We’re introducing new things,” says Farrell. “My job is to find inspiration in other places.” This she does in her travels or by thumbing through magazines. She waits for an “emotional response,” she says. “You suddenly get a hit. If it moves me I have to trust my instincts that it will work.” Moving into the great room, there is a second paneling at work: shiplap. But here the ribs are horizontal, giving the traditional element an update. Modern motifs obtain throughout from the five streamlined limestone fireplaces to the kitchen with its combination of polished and brushed nickel hardware on the cabinet faces “to add sexiness.” What she and her husband are building these days are “customized spec homes.” Typically, a spec home, she points out, was a pretty bare bones affair. “The builder threw it up and the buyer would have to add molding and change the faucets.”These days a Farrell house is fully customized to the point where Farrell says she can “see myself living there.” But most interesting is the fact that the couple are expanding their brand by designing and manufacturing their own line of home furnishings and finishings. At 47 Crescent the company’s stamp on just about everything is apparent from furniture to hardware to a stove hood. They even make their own tile. The Farrells are well aware that the furniture market is saturated. However, Kristen saw a niche. “There was a void in the scale and functionality to fit the Hamptons.” Case in point: in the den, they made sofas with low backs, making it possible to

see into the room. “You can go anywhere to buy sophisticated furniture, but do you really want to sit in that chair?” Her directive is to make furniture that is both sophisticated and comfortable – to cater to “the Hamptons lifestyle.” Also in the den are a pair of square Farrell-designed coffee tables that fit the expansive space better than one. Even dining tables, which seat a minimum of 12, are made bigger to reflect Hamptonites’ penchant for entertaining. The theme of number 47 is very much earthy. “In the baths I wanted the natural element of grass cloth as much as possible.” Baths also sport natural tones – think driftwood with dolomite highlights – to match the limestone in the master bath and mantels throughout. “When doing a mood board and laying it all out I need to make sure it all matches the initial vision.”

And the vision for this house, despite its many nods toward modernity, is “a quiet sophistication with warm tones,” she says. With its location down the road from the bay and abutting an agricultural reserve, she “wanted to be able to open doors and allow the outside in. “I think we achieved that.” They certainly did if you consider that the patio’s cement ping pong table is the first thing you see when you look out the great room’s sliding glass doors. “My goal was country house meets modern design meets Hamptons beach.” But this is not to say that all Farrell houses follow the same design strategy. “Our next house might be in contrast to the neutrals here. She waxes excitedly about how it might have “lots of grays, added metal touches in the master suite, a black and silver theater . . .” One thing we do know: Farrell houses have caught up with the times.

E
ast Enders are blessed with many bounties. We’ve got natural beauty practically everywhere we look, tight-knit communities at every turn and a plethora of talent. Of course we all know that when it comes to knowable names, there’s no scarcity of resources. Believe it or not, the Marvel comics movie star universe is one particularly top-heavy category. The North- and South Forks can claim top-billers from the very beginnings of this industry, even including original comic book creator Stan Lee. Off the top of our heads, here are a few of the Marvel makers. One of our newest neighbors is “Iron Man” franchise star Robert Downey Jr. as series lead Tony Stark, who appears in a staggering number of cross-promotable films; plus Gwyneth Paltrow as his onetime love interest Pepper Pots; and Scarlett Johansson, who also pops up in numerous Marvel vehicles. Then there’s Hugh Jackman, who starred in “Wolverine,” “Logan” and others, and Liev Schreiber, who is in the “Wolverine,” the “X-Men” series and an upcoming untitled “Spider Man” animated project. Visiting co-stars include: Jessica Alba from “Fantastic Four,” James Franco from “Spider Man” 1, 2 and 3, Jennifer Garner from “Daredevil” and “Electra,” Edward Norton from “The Incredible Hulk,” Paul Rudd from “Ant Man,” Dane DeHaan from “Spider Man 2,” Chiwetel Ejiofor from “Doctor Strange,” and Elizabeth Olsen from “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” who also worked with “Revenge” star Emily VanCamp in “Captain America: Civil War.” Now the Hamptons can officially claim “Thor: Ragnarok” title actor Chris Hemsworth, who visited us in November with his family in tow. He and his wife, Elsa Pataky, and their three kids were spotted in Sag Harbor just before his newest blockbuster opened in multiplexes across the country.
Out east, we’ve also got our fair share of bold-faced besties. This past month “Will & Grace” lead Debra Messing, seen out and about in Southampton from time to time, celebrated getting her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with East Hamptonbased gal pal Mariska Hargitay. The close friends are frequently spotted together—on vacays, red carpets, themes parks, and even on Mariska’s longrunning show, “Law & Order: SVU.” And then there’s former Quiogue-based journalist Anderson Cooper and Sag Harbor-based television personality and producer Andy Cohen, who like each other so much that they’ve taken their friendship show on the road. The samesies initialed “Anderson Cooper 360” and “Watch What Happens Live” and “Love Connection” hosts are starring in a fittingly titled live touring production called “AC²: Deep Talk and Shallow Tales.” Word on the street, and in media circles, is that Cohen has replaced Kathy Griffin as Cooper’s “New Year’s Eve Live” co-host as well.

Music icon and Sag Harbor village resident Billy Joel and his wife, Alexis, just added to the Hamptons population by one more. In October, the pair welcomed their second daughter, Remy Anne, to the world. Joel was previously married to supermodel Christie Brinkley who has homes in North Haven and Bridgehampton. And lastly, model, actress and author Molly Sims is doing her part to be productive. Her “Everyday Chic: My Secrets for Entertaining, Organizing, and Decorating at Home” has hit bookshelves just in time for the holidays. It’s the second “Everyday” book for the Wainscott-based lifestyle-advice giver. Her first, “The Everyday Supermodel: My Beauty, Fashion, and Wellness Secrets Made Simple” came out in 2015. or Joan Hornig, philanthropy is much more than whatever the cause du jour might be. Giving back, for her and her husband, George, is a way of life. The Water Mill residents are mightily and actively engaged with the causes that they support. So much so that they’ve built them into their everyday lives. Quite literally, in fact. The philanthropic pair are so dedicated to doing their part that a few years ago they actually erected a structure on their property specifically for that purpose. Resurrected from the original wood and hardware of a circa-1860 barn that had once graced the Hornig’s land, the 3,000-plus square-foot structure is a place where giving back has been framed into the foundation. Filled with artwork and prized pieces from the Hornigs’ various collections, the “art barn,” as they call it, is nonetheless not about the what’s in it, but instead what is meant to happen there. “Well that is why we built it,” says Ms. Hornig of the barn’s higher purpose of charitable endeavors. “We try really hard to touch on the ideas that matter: chiefly the arts, the environment and education.” 58
The space is made for learning, giving back and generating calls to action, she continues. As such, it’s been home to fundraisers for such diverse groups as Southampton Hospital, The Retreat, Riverkeeper, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, Sundance Institute, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Polyphony Youth Orchestra and the Blue Sphere Foundation. As such, it’s also been visited by at least one former President of the United States, several MacArthur Fellows, and a host of other notables, such as James Lipton, Fern Mallis, Christie Brinkley, Chuck Close, April Gornik and Eric Fischl, Lee Woodruff and Wynton Marsalis, to name a few.
she and her husband host. Using locally sourced items and things that she has repurposed from the grounds—whether it be flowers from her gardens; apples from her orchard; or even napkin rings, umbrella stands and tables made from old stumps— she sets the stage differently for every themed event.
Ms. Hornig is quick to point out that, as far as the barn goes, “it’s not about the people, it’s about the doing. That’s much more important to me.” But, she adds, “it’s pretty amazing to think that we might be hosting something that brings the next person who makes significant positive changes in the world.”
Though her calendar for 2018 is fast filling up, Ms. Hornig says she’s always on the lookout for appropriate barn-based opportunities. As such, the founder of the Joan B. Hornig Foundation is keen to put her resources to use for those in need.
Showcasing her flair for entertaining in style (she is the creator of the Philanthropy Is Beautiful jewelry line, which pledges 100-percent of the profits to be donated to the charity of the purchaser’s choice), Ms. Hornig loves to pull out all the stops for the benefits

“It’s fun to take things and put them to use in a different way, especially in an ‘ecotaneous’ way,” she says. “And I love to use things that matter, things that have a story. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION JOHN HAUBRICH: FROM PHOTOREALISM TO ABSTRACTION
S
ome people are fortunate to know their life’s calling from early on. From age three onwards John Haurbrich’s parents set him up with a table and chair in the kitchen where the fledgling artist “drew all day long.” “That was pretty wonderful,” he says. “They really encouraged it.” But, like many artists, he chose an income-producing career first and his art second. After attending school in studio arts for two years in his home state of Minnesota, a friend who was a creative director, talked him into going into advertising, a move that led to graphic design and corporate identity. (He is currently the art director at Fordham University.) While that paid the bills, he continually put his own work out there in restaurants and the like. His luck turned when he showed in one eatery where “all the gallery owners went for lunch.” He was officially “discovered.”

Richard Estes sort of.” But there was always a nostalgic flavor infusing it. His subjects included “older buildings with current cars, diners, movie theaters, iconic New York places like Village Cigars.” After discovering the Hamptons in the ‘90s, he was shown at Chrysalis Gallery in Southampton where his photorealism changed to reflect his East End surroundings. He made beautiful canvases of landscapes, skies and rural themes “indicative of this part of the country.”

He found the abstract process “freeing and experimental, a break from realism’s linear focus.” I find it really kind of sexy – when you take paper off and discover where the ink is and where it isn’t.” He also appreciates how a two-dimensional surface can “draw people in” by layering materials and techniques such as paint, pencil, crayon, varnish, brush strokes, drips, and scratching to create depth. If air bubbles or ripples develop or a piece of a page gets stuck, all the better. Soon he incorporated images from his own camera “to marry” his abstraction to his realism, but making the images as “unrecognizable as possible.”
But let’s face it, being discovered in Minneapolis is not like being recognized in New York City, which is where the artist turned up in the 1980s. “Back then you could walk around to galleries,” he says. “It’s much tougher now – so market driven.” His Chelsea pavement-pounding paid off. He found representation with Stricoff Fine Art for six years. Looking at his abstract work now you would never suspect that Haubrich began as a photorealist. At Stricoff his content was urban inspired: “architectural,

He began with earth tones but then, influenced by “the natural world and its cycles, evolved into a more colorful palette,” he says. “I really like bright colors like acidy green and turquoise.”Those are hues found in an abstract work he made on top of realistic painting of poppies, whose bright orange essence shines through. “You can see flowers in there, but they’re not the focus of the piece. Exploring with color and breaking up form is a lot of what is being done in contemporary paining today. I love it, it’s so much fun.”

ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL A LOCAL DOCTOR’S INTEGRATIVE APPROACH

uch to the gratitude of his cancer and other patients, medical doctor and immunologist Jesse Stoff ’s life did not turn out as he had planned. While he was living his dream of being a country doctor in the Berkshires, he got a prescient call from world-renowned surgeon and best-selling author (Love, Medicine and Miracles) Bernie Siegel, who had read Stoff ’s paper on chronic EpsteinBarre Syndrome.
“Cancer is an immunedeficiency disease and the only thing that can keep pace with its mutations is the immune system.” – Dr. Jesse Stoff Siegel wanted to send a patient from Yale-New Haven Hospital that the oncologists there had failed. Stoff brought her into remission along with other “hopeless cases” that Siegel sent him over the years. It was then that he decided to get a further education, studying immunology with several masters. These days Dr. Stoff is known internationally and has many initials after his name: MD, HMD, FAAFP, DABAM, FAPWCA – and extensive credentials in immunology, naturopathy, homeopathy, acupuncture and holistic medicine. He has authored/co-authored dozens of articles and eight books including the bestsellers Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The Hidden Epidemic and The Prostate Miracle. At his Riverhead office he treats allergies and at his Westbury office he

treats patients with cancer, AIDS, COPD, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, post Lyme syndrome and host of autoimmune diseases. Stoff focuses on both disease prevention and alternative therapies. He has a four-pronged approach in which he gathers information about the patient before determining treatment. Unlike conventional medicine’s one-size-fits-all approach where, for example, most ovarian cancer patients receive the same platinum-based chemo, Stoff treats each patient individually. “I have a dozen breast cancer patients out there,” he says, indicating the treatment room. “And they are all on different protocols.” He first sends tumor slides to a lab that renders a molecular profile of each patient’s particular cancer cells. This “precision medicine” approach allows him to identify biomarkers that indicate molecular abnormalities and allow him to evaluate treatment options. “I need to know what the cancer is trying to do.” He believes that this personalized strategy, based on the unique molecular characteristics of each patient’s cancer, increases the chances of selecting an effective treatment to improve patient outcomes. There are many “alternative” oncologists who use this test. Next, he finds out what’s going on biochemically to support or compromise the immune system. If, let’s say, the adrenals are exhausted, he needs to know. He also looks at “what’s going on with the structure and function of the immune system” so that he can repair it. Without a functioning immune system the patient will otherwise, he believes, be on a never-ending treadmill. “Cancer is an immune-deficiency disease and the

only thing that can keep pace with its mutations is the immune system,” he says. “The number one indicator of risk of recurrence is immune function.” He’s had very ill patients who had never had their immune system looked at before seeing him. Of course, he also looks at lifestyle. Is the patient drinking plenty of water? Eating organically? Going to sleep no later than 10 PM to maximize his Circadian rhythm? Healing takes place in the body mainly between 11 PM and 1 AM.
