Beacon Air Private Shuttle

Flying High While the East Hampton town fathers try to come up with a plan to lower airport noise, yet another private airline has announced it will be servicing the New York (actually White Plains) to Hamptons route. Beacon will shuttle passengers in small planes (fewer than 10 people). Called the “Netflix of the air,” the airline is based on an “all-you-can-fly” subscription model offering members unlimited flights between New York, the Hamptons, Boston, and Nantucket for $2,000 a month.

A M AG A N S E T T L E G AC Y AN ARTSY COUPLE PRESERVES AND UPDATES THEIR HISTORIC DREAM HOUSE

I

n 1979 Michelle Murphy and Robert Strada, a young couple who’d known each other only eight months, began to look for their perfect Hamptons house. Real estate agent Ceil Ackley took them to a shingle-style Amagansett house built in 1894 to give them an idea of the sort of old-world house they sought. Alas, it wasn’t for sale.Yet the pair fell so in love with the authentic relic of times past that a deal was soon struck. Now, counting 36 years of marriage behind them, husband and wife still reside in the house. They are only the third owners. Originally built on Atlantic Avenue as a dwelling for Capt. Sam Loper, who ran the Amagansett LifeSaving Station, it was moved to its present location on Fresh Pond Road in 1903 upon Loper’s retirement. He owned the house, but not the land so it made the several-mile trip to his father’s parcel. The Stradas

were struck not only with the house, but also with its connection to the area’s past. “We both fell in love with the roots of the house,” says Robert, a designer and historic preservationist. They were seduced by the home’s history as well as the Lopers, “a famous old family,” according to Michelle. Fast forward to the present time. Robert is a board member of the lifesaving station where pictures of Capt. Loper adorn the walls.To bring things full circle, builder Ben Krupinksi helped restore the station. Ben’s mother is Ms. Ackley. But the couple also fell in love with the structure’s bones and the fact that it was “very well made.” When they moved in, on weekends for 22 years till they moved in permanently in 2001, only one upstairs room was heated and a motorcycle was parked in the entry hall. “I would take the train out from the city on Friday mornings and spend the day cleaning with a

bandana on my head, listening to poetry on tape,” says Michelle, an artist, poet and playwright, who is writing a memoir about her showbiz family. One such Friday she came upon a snake twined around the upstairs bannister and chased it with a broom downstairs and out the door. There were even bats. But nothing dissuaded them from the painstaking process of updating, renovating and expanding the edifice. Originally a farmhouse, the footprint has remained intact while the house was raised to accommodate a basement (replete with media room), wings were added and a switch made from shingle to clapboard on the exterior to give it a Greek Revival feel. Their first move was to put a woodstove in one of the five “rabbit’s warren” upstairs bedrooms, where they camped out, “teeth chattering,” while they worked on the rest of the house. It was romantic, recalls Michelle. The entire downstairs of the

farmhouse is now the kitchen/dining room from which the steep and narrow original staircase (now the back stairs) still rises to second floor. The second owner put on a large addition sometime in the last century, but when the Stradas finally took on their major renovation in 2008 they expanded upon that. In order to widen the central hall into a grand entryway, Robert designed such architectural details as panelling and moldings, which were then handmade. To add space they forfeited footage in the living room, which they were able to reclaim by losing the porch, a move that still causes a sigh of some regret from Michelle, who enjoyed reading on a hammock as the sun set on the undulating terrain of the golf course across the street. They reconfigured the upstairs to make comfortable bedrooms for their two daughters, Alex and Annie, and added three more fireplaces to the house for a

total of four, which remind Michelle of the Garden City home in which she grew up, which boasted eight fireplaces, and also the Greenwich Village house the couple restored, which had nine. The Stradas are known for their winter holiday parties during which all fireplaces are ablaze. They replaced floors using old-cut nails, “the way it would have been done,” says Robert, whose company, Strada Baxter Design/Build, restores historic homes. They also added a wing at the back where they put a library and an enclosed porch – to make up for the sacrificed front porch -- which is surrounded on three sides by windows and overlooks the garden and pool. Above it is a deck off the master bedroom. Another wing next to the living room was built to house Michelle’s painting studio. During the renovation, they moved into the atmospheric cottage on their property, which they bought from the widow APRIL 2015

of a Norwegian fisherman whose family had squeezed into the small space before the Stradas expanded it. Though they say they plan to stay in the house “forever,” they have begun to rent it (and the cottage) during summer to those who want to borrow a piece of history. To make it more accommodating to today’s renters, they turned the library into a downstairs master suite. Meanwhile, the couple who recently founded Peconic Historic Preservation, a nonprofit that saves local structures facing the wrecking ball, enjoy balancing a fast-paced life (besides his business and her art, they both have shows on LTV) in a home built for a slower existence. On winter mornings MichelIe gets the studio fireplace roaring “to set the tone for an inspired day of painting and writing.” As evening approaches, the house is likely to fill with artists and friends for an impromptu dinner party by the dining room fireside, where their tradition is to “raise a toast to another day of creativity by the sea.”

eoff Kuzara, who grew up on a small subsistence farm at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming, still lives part of the year in that state while also residing in the Hamptons. Having spent his childhood with drill presses, lathes, welders, farm machinery, and livestock learning the basics of engineering and fabrication, it’s no wonder he’s gone on to produce hundreds of wheel-thrown stoneware pieces, dozens of chairs, tables, benches, custom furnishings, and countless small sculptures from multiple materials. He also makes watercolors, oil paintings, and graphite drawings. “Of all of these media, I’m most challenged by and drawn to wood,” he says. “And the inexhaustible dynamics and beauty of the mobile.” Of one of his mobiles currently hanging in the Grenning Gallery

in Sag Harbor, Laura Grenning says: “It gyrates and turns with the breezes that waft by, creating a delightfully mesmerizing exchange of energy and motion, a hundred percent natural.” Many of the artist’s pieces take several hundred hours to make – time he’s found spending his winters in Springs. GrenningGallery.com Taking a cue from Banksy, a Water Mill artist who calls herself ‘The Tanster’, has been distributing free artworks around the South Fork in recent months. The brightly spray-painted pieces, some of which were stenciled with the face of a helmeted Valkyrie, have shown up outside venues from the Golden Pear Café to the 7-Eleven – all with the message: “Please pay it forward to women with cancer.” Most pieces disappeared within hours of

Only having lived a few months in the Hamptons, he works out of a Springs’ studio lined with boards in various stages of completion. Because of the particular joys of entertaining in the Hamptons—a mood set by the sun, the sea, the thrill of the getaway—Huniford’s approach to a Hamptons living room creates a relaxed environment geared towards social gatherings, from intimate moments with one or two friends, to large parties where a never ending parade of guests may be marching through the front door. In either case, within each Hamptons project, the furniture layout is essential. “For smaller groups, the furniture plan allows for flexibility in creating more intimate and cozy areas, including pulling up a few chairs by the fireplace or using the table in the kitchen for dining,” says Huniford. In his own beach home, he repurposed the antique stools of an artist’s studio as versatile additions to his living room. Lightweight, they can easily be moved around the space, and perform double duty as either seating or small tables. Expressing Huniford’s fondness for pairing the old and the new, the rough with the refined, they live alongside the clean lines of a sofa of his own design, inspired by an 18th-century English settee and modernized with a skirt and streamlined silhouette. “My house is a laboratory for color and texture,” explains Huniford, who also added an Ingrid Pitzer collage,

surprisingly well next to a cranberry rake repurposed as a wall-mounted sculpture, both of which frame the rich Huniford Collection armchair that sits at the head of the space. For those grand occasions in which guests outnumber the seats in the living room, “All the areas in the house flow together and correspond well so that conversation flows freely from one space to another,” says Huniford. Color is also an essential component when entertaining guests. To promote flow he keeps the palette simple. “I favor using one paint color for the whole house—it creates a sense of calm and cohesion,” he says.

In Water Mill, for a project designed from the ground up in collaboration with architect James McChesney, Huniford chose a subdued grey enlivened by hints of olive green, which complement the earthy textures of the oxidized metal pendant lamp, reclaimed wooden floors, and rustic farm table that anchor the main space. In his own home he opted for a vibrant shade of white.“When I’m beginning to conceptualize a new project in the Hamptons, one of the first steps is to analyze how the nooks and shadows of a house will translate in the light throughout the day— it’s essential in selecting a paint color,” Huniford explains. In every project, the palette reflects an inspiration drawn from the environment. In this case, it’s the Hamptons sea and air, which are, after all, the two things that bring our guests there in the first place.

HRES: If you could have one super human power, what would it be? MS: Selling real estate in the Hamptons requires super human patience. If I have any super human power, I think I have developed an ability to stay with the process of identifying the right property for a renter or buyer. Or staying the course on a listing and finding the right buyer for that property. I cannot tell you how many times a deal has come together for me in the 11th hour. I do not give up easily and that to me is a newly acquired skill. “Don’t quit before the miracle” is a favorite mantra of mine.

HRES:What is your favorite Hamptons spring activity? MS: I love to be a passenger on one of my husband’s Harley Davidson motorcycles and head east to Montauk. I spend 90% of my day in a car looking at real estate but when I am on that Harley as a passenger I can just relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us in the Hamptons. It is a wonderful way for me to reconnect to the beauty and serenity that brought me to the East End from Manhattan 14 years ago. It is on those rides that I remember how blessed I am to live and work in the Hamptons.
