The Georgica Pond home of legendary realtor Tina Fredericks, who died in 2015 at 93, is for rent. Her early career began at Condé Nast, where she was art director for Glamour and Mademoiselle. Not only did she later sell Andy Warhol his Montauk estate, she was also known to have helped him along in the art world. The 4,500-square-foot home on 2.3 acres was designed with architect Kenton van Boer. The five-bedroom, 6.5 bath dwelling with a “whimsical” interior design asks $300,000 for the season.
The antique house that locals affectionately call Congress Hall on East Hampton’s Main Street was gutted and modernized inside a couple of years ago, but its original exterior was restored to adhere to historic district code. Neil Patrick Harris and hubby David Burtka have purchased a home on East Hampton’s Hands Creek Road. The house, once owned by Grove Street Press publisher Barney Rosset (known for such once risqué titles as D.H. When a 21-year-old student drove his 2006 Mercedes-Benz into a Hayground Road home, the residents who were sleeping inside, said it felt like a bomb had exploded, according to the East Hampton Star. Luckily there were no serious injuries though the crash set off a conflagration that firemen fought for several hours.The driver is the son of Gregg Wasser, owner of commercial developer G&S Investors, while the house (what’s left of it) belongs to model Sasha Pivovarova, a well-known Prada model. In the home at the time were Pivovarova, her husband and four-year-old daughter.

ack Lenor Larsen is one of the fortunate few who lives in a place so surrounded by beauty that it’s hard to imagine—even for those who are among the wealthiest and most acquisitive of East End collectors.
particular early spring morning in 2017 the list topper is “Cobalt Spears” by Dale Chihuly. The circa-2000 blown glass works—17 of them if he remembers correctly, says the iconic designer and creator of “the Larsen look”—are especially precious as they are a gift from the artist. The bright blue vertical glass tubes also represent a 50-plus-year friendship between the two creatives, which began in the mid-1960s when Larsen suggested that his then-mentee focus his efforts on glass blowing. The rest is art history.
Not only does the 89-year-old textile designer, author and founder of LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton live in an extraordinarily unique home—a reimagined 17th-century Shinto shrine designed by Charles Forberg and inspired by Japan’s Grand Shrine of Ise—he possesses an impressive personal collection of art, textiles and storied collectibles. And, he’s also the steward of 16 acres of extraordinary gardens and dozens of large-scale sculptural works by artists of the caliber of Buckminster Fuller,Yoko Ono, Willem de Kooning, and many more.
“Cobalt Spears” is one of many of Chihuly’s special pieces to live at LongHouse. Most recent others include “Blue and Purple Boat,” “White Belugas” and “Neodymium Reeds,” which were all installed for LongHouse’s 20th anniversary celebration, “White, Hot and Blue,” in 2011, honoring the world’s most famous glass blower. These particular works, however, are a permanent part of the collection. Dimensions of the flexible individual spears vary from 50- to 96 inches in height, according to Mr. Larsen, and they have been made by “repeatedly dipping in clear glass and cobalt to create an intense color that will never fade.”
Everywhere one looks, there is something of significance— from many of Larsen’s own prized textiles to the famed 1939 World’s Fair Table by Wharton Esherick, Pierre Paulin’s iconic “Ribbon Chair,” and countless examples of centuries-old pottery. There are pieces from Larsen’s friends, who happen to be counted among the most successful artists and artisans in the world; precious historical artifacts; rare objet de art; and items that have simply struck his fancy. And though he admires and appreciates all of it, Mr. Larsen does not hold tightly to his possessions.
“They have often been reflected in the pond, but now they will be nearby on dry land,” says Mr. Larsen. “We just moved them yesterday and I can’t wait for everyone to come and see them and everything else that we have in store for them this year.”

The spears have been moved around the grounds of LongHouse several times since they were first presented.This year, when the not-for-profit reserve and sculptural garden reopens with its annual Rites of Spring celebration on April 29, they will have been moved from the sandy dunes near the front entrance to their newest home in the Dry River leading to Peter’s Pond.
“I built this place to share. That was the plan from the beginning,” he says as he looks out the second floor window of his home, nestled in the Northwest Woods, smiling as he watches a colorful blue jay alight on a branch. “It’s a beautiful place to be, and it will be a museum when I leave.”

hen you hear the name Bakes & Kropp you think luxury, high-end custom cabinetry, designers of some of the most exquisite homes here in the Hamptons. Bakes & Kropp is a very well known name for custom designed beautiful kitchens, bathrooms, libraries, media rooms and the list goes on. HRES sat down with Mr. Robert Bakes, one of the founding partners to find out what makes this company a leader in its field in the Hamptons.
HRES: What do you see as the next big trend in custom home design...especially here in the Hamptons? RB: We see a trend toward a more transitional streamlined look.
HRES: Robert, I really love your accent…you’re definitely not from New York or from the US. Where did you grow up and what brought you to the Hamptons? Robert Bakes: I grew up in the UK, had a kitchen design business in central London until I met my partner and decided to move to the USA, where she lived and where we now have a home and business. HRES: When was Bakes & Kropp founded? And why in the Hamptons? RB: Bakes & Kropp was formed formally 3 years ago, the relationship between the partners extends back further. We started as a buyer and seller, Robert Bakes-the buyer, Paul Kropp-the seller, and it soon became clear there was a synergy about the relationship, and out of that Bakes & Kropp was formed. My locale had always been the Hamptons, and whilst we continue to be the primary go-to company for luxury high end cabinetry, we now have showrooms in NYC and the North Shore of Long Island, as well as Michigan, near where the BK factory is located. HRES: What are the most requested styles in Hamptons custom cabinetry? RB: The classic white kitchen now with a twist. That could be a more modern slant or perhaps one of the new signature finishes. 42
RB: Our work is spread over new construction equally to remodels, and both have their challenges, remodels perhaps are a little more demanding. HRES: Where do you find inspiration? How do you stay up-to-date with current trends, technology, and codes? RB: I like to think we have an element of ‘trendsetting‘ within how we work and create. The technology is always changing (and sometimes I think it can get ‘fussy’) so we are very careful when we consider a new system or approach. HRES: What does a successful project mean to you? RB: Our referral base is stronger than it’s ever been, in part due to the quality of the product and the skills of the designers, but also in part to the BK experience, where the journey through the process from design concept to completion is every bit as good as the quality of the product itself.
HRES: What has been the most interesting project designed by Bakes & Kropp? RB: Tough question, for the most part they are all very interesting and challenging. Perhaps a fishing outpost we recently completed in Boca Grande in Florida that started as just a kitchen and rapidly spread through the whole house, or a 2-story 7,000 square-foot modified townhouse in NYC for one of the most prominent developers in the city. HRES: Bakes & Kropp now has 4 showrooms. New York City, The Hamptons, Michigan and your newest location in Cold Spring Harbor, any plans to open more? RB: Not this year, it’s a challenge to open a showroom, possibly 2018, and we may head south! HRES: Do you see a lot of remodels? And are they harder to work on then new construction?

Now that he’s got a South Fork getaway, the talented thespian, author, activist and sometime magician has the perfect weekend crash pad for use in between performances of his newest New York production, “In & Of Itself. ” The show, which he executive produces, is about the art of conjuring and stages at the Daryl Roth Theatre in Manhattan through June 18. Coming up, the Emmy Award-winning actor stars in the Alexander Payne comedy “Downsizing,” opening at the end of the year, and which just happens to also star Amagansett’s own Alec Baldwin. Congratulations to another beloved Amagansett resident, Sarah Jessica Parker, who is on a bit of a fashionable roll of late. Known and loved the world over for playing serial sartorial trendsetter Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City,” the actress has scored yet another haute role—narrator of the “Vogue” 125th anniversary video series. The “fivepoint” series, segmented by decade, covers the fashion gamut from the mag’s first issue date in 1892 to the swingin’ 1960s. Ms. Parker, who has her own SJP Collection footwear line at Nordstrom, is currently starring in her second HBO hit series, “Divorce,” with Thomas Haden Church. Leading lady Jennifer Lopez is one busy bee with plenty to celebrate of late as well. The Water Mill resident, most recently attached at the hip and jetsetting all over the place with former Yankee’s slugger Alex Rodriguez, recently got the green light for a third season of NBC’s “Shades of Blue,” of which she stars (with Ray Liotta and Drea de Matteo) and executive produces. The “Jenny from the Block” singer and once-upon-a-time Fly Girl is also slated to serve as EP and judge on the NBC reality dance 54

Hamptons Real Estate Showcase sat down with Raphael Avigdor and James Peyton to find out more about what makes The Avigdor / Peyton Team a top producer. HRES: Interest rates are heading up. How do you think it will affect the real estate market here in the Hamptons? JP: While rates are still historically low but rising we’ve seen our customer base move quickly to lock in the property that fits best for their family. The market remains strong and Wall Street bonuses improved in 2017 leading the way for a busy 1st quarter and expectations of a successful year out East. RA: Typically, when rates begin to rise it serves as a wake up call to buyers, to realize that it’s time to lock in the still favorable rates.
HRES: What are the advantages to working with a team, as opposed to an individual broker? JP: The Avigdor / Peyton Team dedicates an entire team to each customer and development project. With 7 licensed agents, in total, we can deliver a level of service and sophistication that no other individual agent can. With acute market knowledge and a team dedicated to daily market intelligence we can fully support each real estate transaction to fruition. RA: Working with a team has numerous advantages. We have the ability to cover more ground with more 72
people. There is a tremendous benefit we get from not only bouncing our ideas off each other, but more importantly, that we can have seven sets of eyeballs on the watch for any one specific customer - increasing our band width by seven. HRES: Raphael, we know this isn’t about real estate - but if you search your name on Google, you come up on IMDB.com as a movie producer. Tell us how this all happened, and a little about your award wining movie “The Man Who Saved The World”. RA: Before real estate, I ran an export buying office supply department stores in South America with all divisions of product from kitchen appliances to socks. As a result an old high school buddy of mine; Mark Romeo, asked me to participate as a Co-Producer in a film about the history of denim called “Blue Gold” and I jumped at the opportunity. After the success of “Blue Gold”, our director: Christian Bruun introduced us to Danish director, Peter Anthony who was looking for some finishing funds for his film; “The Man Who Saved The World”. This film won an academy award in Denmark and is still making its way through a circuit of film festivals here in the States. Since then I have gotten involved in a total of 7 films, all documentaries. HRES: We hear that more and more buyers want new construction, is that true? JP: Very much a correct statement, this season, our Team is presenting 10 new construction offerings

from seven East End developers ranging from $2M-$6M. RA: A recent article I read in the Wall Street Journal stated that demand for new construction far outweighs the general marketplace’s appetite for older homes. We have always excelled at finding the right land opportunities for our developer customers and thus reap the benefit of representing them on the finished product. HRES: What price range is really moving right now? JP: Our niche north of the highway is benchmarked at $3M for the entry level luxury Hampton’s residence. Now the bar is being set at $6M for a 2-acre estate with tennis overlooking reserve. Developers have also recognized a niche to be filled below the $2M mark and aiming to deliver smaller homes with all the attention to detail and fine finishes of their larger brethren. RA: The $3M-$5M range is where we do most of our business and where we feel there is most business. We will push the ceiling this year to $6 and $7 million with some exciting new product, but still feel that the volume is done in the $3M-$5M range.

THE OTHER HYDRANGEAS ENJOY THE MANY VARIETIES OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SUMMER FLOWER
F
or those of us lucky enough to live on the East End year-round, it’s not the summer social scene we treasure, or the summer crowds. What makes this place so special is the sheer beauty of the landscape in all of its diversity. Gardens are important additions to that landscape, and arguably the queen of East End flower gardens is the hydrangea. The iconic summer flower of the Hamptons, those magnificent blue balls of flowers echo the color of the summer sky above. Hydrangeas are vigorous and relatively easy to grow, but they can break your heart if you don’t know that pruning to shape them or limit their size, unless you know the right time to do it, can prevent them from putting on their azure finery and leave you with very ordinary looking green bushes. Some newer varieties solve that problem by producing flowers anyway (they bloom on both new and old growth) but the display may not be quite the show you’re hoping for. Those blue hydrangeas are ubiquitous here, but there are other hydrangeas, too, equally beautiful, that can play different roles in gardens and landscapes and are more easy going. Smart landscapers and savvy homeowners deploy these other members of the hydrangea clan to dazzling effect in gardens and landscapes. Here are four to know. Smooth-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens), especially the well-known variety Annabelle, is versatile and undemanding. The plants produce huge white snowballs – lots of them—in early summer, on

tall, straight stems lined with rich green leaves. Versatile and undemanding, the plants will grow in sunny or lightly shady locations. Let them form a clump, or plant them in a row for a screen, divider or backdrop for other plants. This hydrangea can grow quite tall, but you can cut it back to a manageable height in early spring, and it will still reward you with flowers. In fact, this yearly pruning is a good way to keep the plants to a height where the flowers are easy to see (and to cut for the vase). After blooming the plants can serve as a lush green backdrop for later bloomers in the landscape, such as daylilies or shrub roses.
“The Hydrangea is the iconic flower of the East End Summer.” Not all hydrangeas are bushy. One of them, the climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris) is a vine of exquisite beauty. This elegant plant has long, woody stems sheathed in shaggy, cinnamon-colored bark and is at its best climbing the trunk of a tall tree (it won’t hurt the tree). In summer large, lacy white flat-topped flower clusters bloom against deep green leaves. The plants can grow on a sturdy trellis, too, but don’t grow them on a shingled wall, where the clinging stems could cause damage. Like all hydrangeas, this one loses its leaves in

fall. When the plants are bare the beauty of the richly textured russet bark glows in the wintry landscape. For smaller spaces consider the oakleaf hydrangea, a beauty from spring to late fall.The compact shrub grows 4 to 6 feet high, and its rich green leaves are lobed, similar to those of oak trees (its obvious namesake). From midsummer into fall the plants show off large cone-shaped clusters of pure white flowers. They last a long time, taking on pinkish tones as they age, sometimes turning completely pink. As autumn descends, those green leaves deepen to purple-bronze or burgundy. Oakleaf can handle more sun than the classic blue ones, and it can also tolerate drier soil. What it can’t handle is wet, soggy soil. Give it decent drainage and it’s a real stunner. Finally, the latest bloomer, the peegee hydrangea, its nickname taken from its botanical name, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’. This woody shrub becomes almost treelike over time, and in late summer its white round to oval flower heads cover the plants. It can be a star in late-season landscapes. The long-lasting flowers show a lovely blush pink tinge over time. A favorite variety, Tardiva, bears large cone-shaped flowerheads of creamy white in fall, often blooming into October here. These “other” hydrangeas bring their own special beauties to Hamptons landscapes. Expand your hydrangea horizons!
