HOT SALES AND LISTINGS WITH A DOLLOP OF HAMPTONS GOSSIP

BY KAREN DASH

Jule Pond/Fordune

Caption

A LOTTA COFFEY BEANS So now we know who bought Jule Pond/Fordune: it’s Manhattan-based hedge fund manager Greg Coffey. Though the estate was technically acquired by an offshore company based in the Cayman Islands, it was the Australian-born trader, nicknamed the Wizard of Oz, who treated himself to the epic estate, which cost him a cool $105 million. The veteran Wall Street wizard can swing it, though; his $4 billion Kirkoswald Asset Management has risen 9% so far this year, after returning a whopping 23% last year. The sale has broken records as the most expensive single parcel ever sold in the Hamptons. Listing agents were Zach and Cody Vichinsky of Bespoke. The Water Mill property boasts 42 acres of prime property and the longest stretch of private oceanfront in the area, nearly a quarter of a mile. Weighing in at a massive 20,000 square feet, the main house was built by Henry Ford II, grandson of the Ford Motor Company founder. The

HRES_April2022_RealtyCheck.indd 1

main living spaces include a 48-foot-long living room, family, game and recreation rooms, and a 20’ by 28’ kitchen. There are 12 bedrooms in all, including two master suites, and 12 bathrooms, plus a couple of powder rooms. In addition to the main house, the property features a separate three-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath carriage house, plus a detached six-car garage. Welcome to the Hamptons, Wizard!

BIG RENTAL ASK A brand new oceanfront mansion built by Farrell Building on Surfside Drive in Bridgehampton is available to rent for the month of July for $1.65 million. Sounds like a lot, but each day costs just $53,225. Can you really put a price on the perfect summer? (Well, actually, yes.) Set on one-acre of land, the not-quite-finished estate includes a 10,000 square foot, 8-bedroom, 9-bathroom mansion, with an elevator to access all three floors. There will be a surfside pool and a finished roof deck, all ready for summer entertaining. The property is listed with Saunders & Associates.

MASSIVE HOUSE, MASSIVE PRICE Neighboring that nice Mr. Rennert’s Fair Field, also along the ocean, is a more modest (and better looking) residence, built in 2013 and designed by Bates Masi + Architects. The homeowners, financial whiz Eric Semler and wife Tracy Chutorian Semler, had the house on and off the market several times over the years, with asking prices that went as high as $60 million. The property ended up selling in an off-market transaction that closed in January. The recorded sale price is $50 million, and the buyer a typically anonymous LLC. (Interestingly, property records show the transfer as a non-arm’s-length transaction, which means the seller and buyer have a personal relationship.) The Semlers bought the 3.2-acre property, with its 300 feet of oceanfront, in 2006. The house is so gorgeous, it’s won numerous architectural awards and was even once featured in a Chanel No. 5 commercial, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Gisele Bündchen. Outside, there are an oceanside pool, pool house and a tennis/sport

REALTY CHECK court, plus a rooftop deck with kitchen, fireplace and spa tub. And of course, the always coveted beach and ocean lies right outside the back door.

MERCEDES BUYS AND SELLS IN EAST HAMPTON As a native New Yorker and year-round Hamptonite, the award-winning stage, screen and television actress Mercedes Ruehl has bought and sold multiple houses in East Hampton. Recently, her former property in Springs sold for its full asking price of $1.695 million, coming up on double the $958,000 she paid for the place in 2017. Ruehl’s new house, in East Hampton’s northwest measures in at a modest and manageable 1,300 square feet, about half the size of her former 2,500-square-foot house. Ruehl paid $1.325 million for the slightly more than half-acre property, which was listed with Triplemint. Inside, there is a large living room with vaulted ceilings and skylights that keep the house light and airy. A cozy fireplace is flanked by sliders to the deck outside. The first order of business for Mercedes, it seems, would be to add a big bookshelf to the living room. After all, she needs somewhere to display her Oscar and Golden Globe awards, along with her Tony and Drama Desk awards, two Obie Awards, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards.

HOORAY FOR THE CPF! Despite low real estate inventory, January 2022 saw the biggest monthly revenue in the 23-year history of the Peconic Bay Community Preservation

Fund: $24.69 million. That contrasts with January 2021, when the sum was $21.07 million. Funded by a 2% tax on most real estate purchases, the program supports open space, preservation of farmland, and most recently, clean water.

Southampton Town collected the most in January with $14.55 million, while East Hampton took in $7.32 million, 27.1% more than January 2021, the second-biggest spike. Riverhead brought in $680,000 in January 2022.

Huge real estate transactions, like the $105 million sale of the Jule Pond estate as well as a $118 million trade on several parcels in Water Mill, drives the numbers higher. So far this year, the market shows no signs of slackening.

The nearly six-acre property will also feature a 350-seat event space and 90-seat restaurant with outdoor seating for 120 guests. The 37 townhouses include a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom units on the Shinnecock Canal. The plan had originally been to sell the townhouses to individual buyers, but recently, the Southampton Town Board rezoned to allow the townhouses to be operated as a resort, like the rest of the Canoe Place Inn. Amenities include a clubhouse, full-service spa, heated pool, fitness center, boat slips and a beach shuttle.

HELLO, ROBERTA! Roberta’s, a popular Brooklyn restaurant known for wood-fired pizzas will be opening in the old Arbor space in Montauk. The restaurant at 240 Fort Pond Road sold in January for $3 million in an off-market deal. This sounds like a great idea — we were underwhelmed by both the food at Arbor and the location. A pizzeria and casual eatery sounds like a great solution. But look out, Montauk also sports the venerable Pizza Village, the beloved Sausages, and the new and excellent Blade + Salt for pizza joints. May the best ‘za win.

RARE BUT NEW Just listed publicly for the first time ever, the property at 10 Roberts Lane in East Hampton is a one in several generation’s opportunity to own a rare 19th century farmstead property of 3.54 open acres on the immediate outskirts of East Hampton Village. It’s exclusively represented by Martha Gundersen and Paul Brennan of Douglas Elliman, with an asking price of $5,950,000. The main house is a beautifully restored 19th century farmhouse with lots of original detailing and modern upgrades, and the property also includes a studio, cottage and an antique barn that now serves as a pool pavilion. This wonderful character-filled farmstead, with its tastefully updated and restored farmhouse and outbuildings, blends authentic period detail perfectly with the sophisticated needs of today’s contemporary lifestyle. All the well-proportioned rooms of the immaculate main house flow together effortlessly, giving a sense of elegance, comfort, and calm with views overlooking 100 year old specimen trees and the farm’s gracious acres.

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST One of our very favorite East Hampton foodies is growing her brand, yet again, and we couldn’t be happier about it. The Barefoot Contessa now has a brand-new show on the Food Network. And yes, we’re already obsessed! It’s called Be My Guest with Ina Garten and of course, it’s fabulous. Set mainly at her East Hampton home, the series brings a collection of friends and famous people into Ina’s house, and beyond, for “a day of conversation, connection, food and fun visits to some of her favorite local spots,” according to Food Network. Debuting in March, the show features bold-faced guests (several of whom are Hamptons regulars), such as Julianna Margulies (The Morning Show, ER), Willie Geist (Morning Joe), director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca, and of course, her husband, Jeffrey. Hamptons hot spots featured include the beach, Ina’s favorite East Hampton bakery, and the 1770 House. “This show is a dream come true for me,” says Garten. “I’ve invited old friends and some new ones for great conversations, a little cooking, and a personal tour of East Hampton. This is going to be really fun!” Streaming on multiple platforms, the series will air as a half-hour show on the Food Network, and hourlong program on Discovery+ and as a companion podcast. Fans can also follow #BeMyGuest for highlights and recipes from the show. NO ACCESS TO HOLLYWOOD An unauthorized film about the life of Sag Harbor resident Billy Joel is in the works, despite not being able to use any of the Piano Man’s songs or get approval from the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer himself. According to sources in the know, not only

Apparently, the show is still going on though. Piano Man, the biopic, is being developed by actor Michael Jai White and producer Adam Ripp, whose father, Artie, a former friend of Joel’s who produced the multiple Grammy winner’s first solo album, Cold Spring Harbor. That record, which was not a commercial success, came out a year before Joel’s huge breakthrough album, Piano Man. KIDDOS CAN COOK Getting an early start on her culinary career, Eva Achuthan-Kozar is appearing on season eight of MasterChef Junior. The 13-year-old from Sag Harbor, who hopes to one day own and run her own 3-Star Michelin restaurant, joins 15 other young cooks hoping to impress the judges and win the eponymous title of the Fox show, as well as the $100,000 prize. Now an eighth grader at the Hayground School, Eva was just 11 years old when she originally filmed back in 2019 in Los Angeles. It’s been a hard secret to keep but now that the show is finally airing, she has been able to share that the experience of learning from chefs Gordon Ramsey, Aaron Sanchez, nutritionist Daphne Oz, and her fellow contestants has been the thrill of a lifetime. Way to go girl!

Bridgehampton resident Bethenny Frankel has also jumped in to help overseas. Her BStrong organization has committed to sending $20 million in supplies to NATO countries bordering Ukraine. SCORE ANOTHER FOR CARTER Kudos to composer Carter Burwell, who was just honored with The Spirit of Collaboration Award, along with filmmakers Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, by the Society of Composers & Lyricists. The Amagansett resident, a frequent collaborator with the Coen brothers, has scored more than 100 films so far. His most recent works are the films Catherine, Called Birdy by Lena Dunham, and The Banshees of Inisherin by Martin McDonagh, both of which are expected to be released this year. IT’S ABOUT TIME We absolutely cannot wait to see BET’s new fourpart original limited series, Carl Weber’s The Black Hamptons, which will be screening and streaming this summer. Set in Sag Harbor, the drama follows the Brittons and Johnsons as they feud over a coveted property in the village. A Day With... Tim Davis

im Davis of The Corcoran Group has been one of the Hamptons leading brokers for over forty years. HRES sat down with Tim recently to discuss his thoughts about the East End real estate market and where he sees things heading in 2022. Your thoughts on the Hamptons real estate market going into summer 2022? The market remains strong and inventory in short supply. Our market is fairly efficient and full of buyers waiting on the sidelines for properties provided that

pricing makes sense. Keeping that element in line is key for business in 2022. As a leading luxury real estate broker what do you love most about this industry? The ability to be a part of the life changing transactions for individuals is priceless. Each day is a new day for opportunity; no two days are the same. How have the needs and desires of the home buyers changed over the past few years? We have lived through “I want to buy a house” to “I have to buy a house” to “I need to buy a house” and now back to “I want to buy a house”. The decision making process for buyers through these stages has helped to define pricing and markets throughout the Hamptons. Why do sellers choose to list their homes with you? My 42 years of experience and what I have been able to deliver to sellers in sale price and service is second to none. It is an

incredibly rewarding process for me which I take very seriously and commit myself to 24/7. Is there anything in this industry that you wish you could change and why? There should be a more rigorous process for getting a real estate license. An active board of realtors to hold brokers accountable to their actions would be good for our market as well. Is this really a good time to sell a home? Yes, it’s a very good time to sell. However, that depends on what the plans are for the proceeds and whether they are being used to purchase another home in this market or another where prices have increased. There should be an education process undertaken by the seller with guidance from their real estate professional. Tim Davis, Licensed Associate RE Broker tgdavis@corcoran.com 516.356.5736

LIFESTYLE

HAUTE SPOT DIGGING DEEPER WITH LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT BRIAN MAHONEY

BY DAWN WATSON

Landscape architects here on the East End also need to take the demands of our harsh natural environment into account, as well as the specific lifestyle needs clients might have. A comprehensive property plan might include how to best incorporate a pool and accompanying equipment; accessory structures, such as pool house, guest house, barn or shed; and garage, or lack thereof, which necessitates outdoor storage areas for refuse and such.

A

There's also the "garage-door syndrome," Mahoney muses. "So many people go straight from the garage and into the house, and they completely overlook the fact that they have this beautiful front door and lawn that they aren't using or even seeing," he says. "It's one of the most underappreciated parts of many properties. I encourage them to think about beautiful parking areas for everyday use."

Long Island native and landscape architect with more than 30 years in the field, Brian Mahoney knows the Hamptons from the ground up.

“I’m a sucker for an old house,” he laughs, adding that his Arts & Crafts home on the North Fork was the vision of architect Parker Hapgood. "It's fun to learn the history of a place."

Even as a boy, he loved plants and flowers, he says. From fruits and vegetables to trees, bushes, and flowering plants, if it grew from the earth, Mahoney was interested. And though he had no idea that such a job as landscape architect existed, as Mahoney got older, he was encouraged to follow his passion.

One of the top coastal landscape architects working today, Mahoney marvels at the historical trajectory of his chosen profession. It came to the fore in the 1800s with Frederick Law Olmsted, widely considered to be the father of landscape architecture, but, remarkably, the field was still fairly new when he started practicing.

“All the guidance counselors said, ‘You’re a horticulturalist. Go to Farmingdale.’ So I did,” he says of the two-year program close to his family's home in Nassau County. “Before I knew it, I was in a landscape design class, and I was hooked.”

“There were only 1,381 other licenses issued before mine,” he recalls. “That’s pretty amazing when you think about it.”

Mahoney, who also excelled at math — geometry in particular — then went on to earn degrees in landscape architecture and ornamental horticulture at Ohio State University. It’s one of the only programs in the country that housed landscape architecture in the college of engineering. “It was the perfect marriage of drawing and math,” he says. Specializing in historic commissions and waterfront properties, Mahoney says that he particularly loves the opportunity to dig deeper into the history of a property whenever he can.

The job encompasses much more than just the surface beauty or utility of a project, says Mahoney. It demands a deep understanding of dynamic ecosystems and vegetation, as well as current building materials and sanitary systems, plus keeping abreast of the myriad laws governing zoning, building envelopes, setbacks, wetlands, etc. “There's a lot more to landscape architecture than just watercolor images of landscapes," he says. "What’s underground needs to be designed first. You’ve got to get the building envelope sorted out and know where everything can go before you can make everything pretty.”

Speaking of the aesthetics of Hamptons style, over the past few years, Mahoney says that he's noticed a distinct movement away from the traditional landscape and into a more native look. A growing number of clients, especially those who live in modern homes, want their personal spaces to include more indigenous plants. "There will always be a place here for hydrangea, privet, green grass lawns and gravel, but I hear 'I want a beachy look' more and more," he says. Currently in-demand native species include nepeta, or catmint; lavender; ferns; and panicum, or switchgrass, says Mahoney. But, he warns, bringing a bit of the beach back to your property is not as simple as buying dune grass and just planting it anywhere. The soil and sun conditions are different for these types of plants, and they will need different care and understanding than other vegetation. "These native species are built to endure in harsh environments, so they might not act the way you'd expect," he says. "It's best to have an understanding of that before you start digging." That said, there's no reason to fear a landscaping project, says Mahoney. Even the simplest thing can improve one's property for years to come. "The best time to plant a tree was yesterday," he says.

DESIGN

WALLPAPER MAKES A COMEBACK

T

he moment of bold is in. If you were to step into a designer time machine and go back three, five, or even seven years, you might find the world a little less colorful. The palette of just a few years ago was a far more neutral one, embracing whites, grays, and even blacks. (Nowhere is this more apparent than in the ceaseless trend of the white kitchen.) But an exploding trend has emerged in design, after being out of favor for a number of decades: bright, vibrant, and playful wallpaper is de rigueur in the homes of the fashionable. Just ask Bryce Capp, co-founder and head creative director of the very in-demand company Milton & King. The Australian company, which Capp co-founded in 2008 with his brother, Richard, focuses on luxury fabrics and wallpapers in risktaking colors and patterns. And their zeitgeisty designs are perfect examples of what everyone wants right now. Why is wallpaper — and bold wallpaper, in particular — enjoying a renaissance? Capp attributes the moment to a number of factors.

Technology, he says, allows for the development of more sophisticated, more saturated designs. Brands can also develop designs far more quickly than they could in the past. “We’re so agile, and we can create a design in a day,” he says.

VIBRANT PATTERNS ARE A DESIGN MUST IN 2022

recommend ordering 20 percent over the square footage that you’re looking to cover.

Wallpaper, too, Capp says, is now playing to a younger crowd. “It’s easier to install,” he says. “It’s easier to remove.” More sophisticated products, produced in designs that appeal to a younger demographic, have shifted the idea of wallpaper. Removable wallpaper, he says, is helping to get a younger generation familiar with the idea of wallpaper, so that when they are ready to become homeowners, they are already familiar with the product. “The transformational effects that it has are amazing.”

When it comes to wallpaper, it’s ok to take risks. “Realizing the transformational power of wallpaper is pretty impressive,” Capp says. And it’s true: a little wallpaper can transform the look and feel of an entire room. Particularly popular trends of late have been botanical prints, animal-based prints, and even murals; Milton & King, for instance, devotes a section of their portfolio to full-room murals, which include eye-popping scenes: a safari, a view of New York City, a life-size humpback whale, the entire solar system, a wooly mammoth wearing a scarf and hat, a pirate ship sailing through blackest night.

If you’re looking to test the waters with wallpaper — a design must in 2022 — you can start with a statement room or statement wall. Powder rooms are ideal for experimentation, but you can also highlight an accent wall in a bedroom, or the space above wainscoting or a chair rail in a dining room. Wallpaper hangers

This year, splash around in the wide world of wallpaper. It’s an exciting way to bring the external world into your home, to add color, emphasis, and personality to any number of spaces. Forget about stodgy patterns and hardto-install (and remove) rolls. This trend has taken flight. Step aboard!

ART FOR CHANGE HOPE SANDROW’S ART ACTIVISM TRANSFORMS LIVES

H

ow do you keep your humanity in circumstances that are inhumane? For Hope Sandrow the answer is art, and specifically art as a catalyst for change. “Art is life and life is art,” says Sandrow, “the prism through which to live my life.” Sandrow does not shy away. She does not sugar coat. Where there is darkness, she bravely shines a light, finding not only her own voice but giving expression to others. Eerily reminiscent of current events, Sandrow’s great grandparents ran for their lives from Ukraine at the turn of the 20th century. This family legacy led to a defining question, “What is the importance of art to people who have lost everything?” Younger years framed by an era of dissent and the civil rights act of 1964 grew to life-long community engagement for Sandrow. While her works were acquired by the Whitney, MOMA and The Met, she also was keenly aware of discrimination against women artists. “I made art in the ‘80s that alluded to my viewpoint of looking at art on museum walls – for example paintings celebrating the rape of women – called masterpieces,” says Sandrow who wanted to switch the narrative from being directed by men, “I walked NYC streets and picked up men and asked them to pose for my camera. I flipped the gaze.” In 1990 Sandrow founded The Artist and Homeless Collaborative at the Park Avenue Armory Shelter for Homeless Women. “It was a profound experience to see the relevancy of art to life for those who had lost the place they Hope Sandrow working with The Artist and Homeless Collaborative participants

thought they belonged which was their home.” Trust and privacy were paramount as many residents had husbands outside who wanted to kill them. Sandrow recounts, “I was there to listen and learn and as soon as the women experienced making art with me, and later my artist colleagues, they opened up. Art is an important medium for self-representation.” As a victim of abuse herself, Sandrow admits, “It gave me the courage to expose my own personal history and transformed the holding of secrets into works of art.” At the time of AIDS and when many artists were being blamed for cultural woes it was extremely gratifying for Sandrow and her colleagues, “As soon as we got off the elevator the women would greet us, ‘The artists are here!’” Powerful images from this experience were part of a recent exhibition “Art for Change: The Artist and Homeless Collaborative at the New York Historical Society.” (Images courtesy of NYHS). John Ahearn, Rigoberto Torres, Detail Ernestine and Three Friends 1992

The Hamptons have represented a retreat for Sandrow since first coming out with her husband in the ‘70s. They acquired his family’s carriage/ gatehouse in Shinnecock Hills, dating to 1891 thought designed by Grosvenor Atterbury, and recently a carriage house on the adjacent property once belonging to William Merritt Chase thought designed by Stanford White. “As an artist this captured my imagination because years earlier, I’d titled my onsite project open air studio spacetime in homage to Chase,” said Sandrow. “This is my place to make art, reflect.”

BY HEATHER BUCHANAN

Portrait of a Chicken as an Egg Within a Golden Rectangle

Sandrow turned her activism close to home in this case, researching and taking up the cause of the Shinnecock Nation and looking at its rich and complex history, noting the discrimination and bad treatment of Shinnecock Nation members. A chance meeting with a rooster crossing the road led to raising chickens and Sandrow has shared five thousand eggs with Shinnecock food pantry since March 2020. It is the literal nourishment to the soul. She has been an active advocate for preserving ancestral lands since the turn of this century saying after the sacred burial ground at Sugar Loaf Hill was returned to the Tribe, procured by funds from the Community Preservation Fund, Peconic Land Trust and Roger Waters, “It was the first time I had seen smiles on some of my friends’ faces.” Acknowledging the economic challenges faced in land preservation, Sandrow has a proposal, “Would Real Estate professionals, who’s expertise has raised property values, be willing to create a fund, say one percent of their annual profits, with those monies making up the difference between the appraised and market values of the land that the CPF could acquire? It would be their unique opportunity to give back while moving our community forward. Please let me know.” While aware of the many challenges still ahead, it is her “Portrait of a Chicken as an Egg Within a Golden Rectangle”, where Hope finds hope and indeed as Emily Dickinson wrote “it is the thing with feathers.” She says, “I discovered while photographing the eggs being candled they look like suns and moons and planets that have a similar cycle.” You could say in life and in art, it has come full circle.

JESSICA GERSTON TRANSFORMS A WATER MILL RETREAT INTO A HOME FOR ALL SEASONS. BY KATYA RUSSELL PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANDREW FRASZ

I

n the autumn of 2019, clients of Jessica Gerston’s eponymous design firm retained her to decorate their newly-purchased weekend home in Water Mill. Gerston and her team had just commenced the ordering process when the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill. As Gerston tells the story, “The next thing we knew, the family had fled the city and moved to the new house, which was empty except for a black leather sofa from the husband’s bachelor days.” Thus it was that their weekend home became their primary residence. Gerston too had to regroup. Rather than designing a beach house, she now began to think of the house, a new build with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, in a more aesthetically ambitious way. “Sculptural” became her watchword. The double-height foyer with its seven-tiered mid-century-inspired mobile chandelier by David Weeks, announces this theme. “I always prioritize lighting,” says Gerston, “and for me, that chandelier was the starting point that defined the home.” Beneath it, she placed a circular flat-weave Moroccan rug. Plaster and leather lights of her own design are a focal point in the living room. A sinuous assemblage fashioned from rope, also of her own design, hangs over a bleached maple table. Beaded “Talisman” sconces by Apparatus Studio, the most sculptural of lighting designers, light up the master bedroom. For the junior primary bedroom, she selected stone sconces whose well, marmoreal, affect she softened with sisal matting and a linen-upholstered bed, a move that add both texture and warmth to the room.

The double-height foyer features a seven-tiered mid-century-inspired mobile chandelier by David Weeks.

HRES_April2022_Designer.indd 2

Gerston, who worked in the fashion industry before she became an interior designer, took the same approach to the furniture. “There’s a dynamic interplay between shapes,” she says. To this end, the plaster lights are offset by a pair of Brazilian chairs by Sergio Rodrigues. A large coffee table looks as though it might be made of travertine marble, but is in reality a hunk of wood that was treated to resemble stone. The parade of sculptural shapes continues in the adjacent sitting room, where Gerston grouped four of Ligne Roset’s Pumpkin chairs around a custom coffee

table shaped like a puddle. Because Gerston and her clients had worked together before, “they let me run with every single idea. They trusted me and allowed me to go with my gut.” Their trust was well-deserved. An enthusiastic write-up in the Italian edition of Architectural Digest hailed Gerston as a rare talent whose interiors “fascinate and stun.” To be sure, the result of her handiwork is that her rooms do not appear decorated so much as sculpted. Overall, she says, they strike the right balance between elegant yet functional and comfortable. As for her clients, “They lived through the entire installation of the house. It brought them such happiness during that time to be able to watch their home take shape, piece by piece, as each beautiful thing arrived. I don’t like to do interiors that anyone has seen before and I rarely use the same piece twice. It’s so much fun to discover new vendors and artisans for each project. I mean, otherwise, what’s the point?”

EMBRACE YOUR GREEN THUMB TIPS FOR STARTING YOUR OWN EAST END GARDEN THIS SPRING

H

ow to start a garden: Never had a garden before? I highly recommend it! It's easy to do, great to do with young kids — get them away from their screens for a while. It's satisfying and rewarding.

hours a day. A location in light, dappled shade will also allow you a good choice of plants. Don't plant your garden where it will be in deep shade cast by your house, evergreens, or other shade trees with a heavy canopy.

My parents always had a garden, and when my brother and I were young, we each got our own little patch, with a tomato plant, a pepper plant, a few marigolds and petunias.

It's a good idea to spread some compost on the soil and dig it in before you plant anything. If you're going to have your plants in pots, you can find potting soil mixes at local nurseries and garden centers, along with bags of compost to mix in.

We have both always had a garden wherever we lived. It's a good thing to do. If you plant flowers you get to enjoy their colors and fragrances. Bring some inside the house for bouquets. If you grow vegetables, you get to eat them (there is nothing like the flavor of a freshly picked tomato!). Grow herbs and you can pick them fresh to use in cooking. Your first garden can be a patch in the ground or a group of pots on a sunny deck or patio. The first step is to decide where to put your garden. For the greatest choice of plants, look for a spot that gets bright sunlight for 6 or more

If you're going to make your garden where there's lawn right now, you'll need to first dig up the grass before you prepare the soil. When you have your garden dug and you've decided what you want to grow, you have to know when to plant the vegetables, herbs and flowers you want to grow. The calendar isn't always a reliable guide to when to plant your garden. Some things can go into the ground before the last frost in spring; others need frost danger to be past and the soil warm. The dates of last frost vary from year to year; the last frost date you'll see in almanacs and on gardening websites are averages.

BY ANNE HALPIN

A better way to know when it's safe to plant is to use phenology — the study of seasonal indicators of climate. One good indicator to use is a lilac bush. These old-fashioned shrubs are loved for their sweetly fragrant flowers. They only bloom for a few weeks, but their scent is a little bit of heaven. And watching them gives you a reliable guide for planting. When the lilacs' earliest leaves have grown out past the buds that enclosed them, it's safe to plan cold-hardy plants: flowers such as sweet alyssum and pansies, vegetables like peas, lettuce and spinach, and herbs like parsley and chervil. When the lilacs are in full bloom — all the flowers on most of the plant are fully open (and wonderfully fragrant), it's time to plant warm weather flowers like marigolds and geraniums, vegetables including tomatoes, peppers and corn, and herbs like basil. Spring weather on the East End is often unpredictable — watch nature and take her cues.

TRAVEL

THE ALGARVE DELIVERS AN UNFORGETTABLE TRIP TO THE FABLED PORTUGUESE COAST

BY HANNAH SELINGER

For the most part, we ate at casual restaurants, where we could see — and eat — the sea. But one night, entirely by chance, we found ourselves at Bon, a Michelin-starred restaurant set in the idyllic hills not far from our hotel. We arrived in time to watch the mountains purple with dusk, from our table on the patio. There, a nine-course menu arrived in artful stages, each plate a piece of art in and of itself (the restaurant sources its incredible and diverse array of plates from a local ceramicist). The meal was a passionate discourse with the Algarve’s local producers.

I

t was the last international trip before the storm. No, I don’t mean an actual storm; I mean the proverbial storm that has upended travel since early 2020. On my last trip out of the country, I disappeared into the heart of Portugal. Ten days, two regions, one rental car, two children, one husband, and countless memorable meals. Portugal’s Algarve Coast, a strip of southern coastline boasting Instagram-worthy photos, runs nearly 2000 square miles, from the Alentejo, in the north, to the port of Cape St. Vincent, in the south. Limestone caves and grottoes offer stunning vistas of turquoise water. In September, the weather feels nothing like fall. It’s still summer in Portugal, even when the rest of us are experiencing cool weather. We had driven to the Algarve from Lisbon, in the north, where we spent three days stumbling around the old city, in search of the best vittles. The Algarve is less frenetic than Lisbon, more Hamptons than New York City, and it felt just about right to kick off our shoes and dig our toes into the sand and surf. One day, in search of adventure, we headed to the petite town of Portimão. The port town, no more than a slip, is best known for its slippery, silver sardines. Walking through the Mercado Municipal — an indoor market featuring an entire room of fishmongers selling their wares — we dove into the local culture. Scales tipped with mounds of shining

sardines. The reptilian claws of gooseneck barnacles — another Portuguese delicacy — reached upward. Should we take them home with us, we wondered? How should we cook them? Each year, Portimão hosts a sardine festival, a dayslong homage to the humble fish. But we had missed that proverbial boat by about a month. Instead, we walked up the narrow hill that connects town with the water until we arrived at a restaurant that seemed pleasant enough. There, my husband ordered a plate of sardines, simply grilled, while I dipped Portuguese bread into the broth accompanying a bowl of fresh clams. We were staying not far from Portimão, in Carvoeiro, a town of just under 3,000 residents tucked between the famed beaches of Benagil and Ferragudo. Carvoeiro is known for its limestone caves, and you can see them by boat. With our children in tow, we boarded an inflatable power boat that took us from Carvoeiro’s tiny public beach out into open water, where we could see the maritime etchings of time, caves carved into arches through the lifeline of water. In one cave, a private beach beckoned. Weary travelers took solace in the relative respite from the sun, the still-warm water, rays dipping through holes in the top, dappling the surface of the water. Elsewhere: a cave with a hole shaped like a perfect, unblemished heart.

We dined, too, at Rei das Praias, an Algarve establishment that has held court on a gorgeous, private beach since 1976. Seafood is the point here, of course, and we ordered our fish whole (the restaurant will cater to your imagination, whether you prefer your fish grilled, sautéed, or blanketed in sauce). This slice of the Algarve feels not unlike the Hamptons, with its elegant customers, accommodating beach property, and slip of sea not far out of reach. It would be hard to overstate, too, the majesty of the region’s hotels. Ours, the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort, overlooked a natural arch made from limestone. From the hotel’s majestic European breakfast (think rooms upon rooms of unfolding delights, from fresh produce to artisan cheeses to charcuterie), floor-to-ceiling windows reveal the panoramic landscape. The tiered saltwater pool? Just an added benefit, not unlike the rooftop bar, revealing the prismatic colors of a Portuguese sunset, night after night. Perhaps the Algarve has worked itself into my soul so completely because it was part of my final international trip in Before Times — before Covid, before vaccination and testing wars, before masks as a de rigueur part of travel. But mostly I think that it is the charm that stays with me, those metallic sardines, glinting in the midday light; the sizzling, scarlet, heads-on langoustines served at an unnamed bistro on a Carvoeiro side street; the green-blue waters of the famed Praia de Dona Ana. It has all stayed with me: the magic, the light at dusk, the crisp white Port and tonic enjoyed as a Portuguese aperitif. The Algarve delivers. Passport and mask in hand, I’m plotting my return.

EAST END EATS

GET YOUR GREEN ON EAT AT THESE BRIGHT AND CHEERY GARDEN-INSPIRED SPOTS BY HANNAH SELINGER American Hotel reads like a cold weather paradise. But allow the maitre’d to escort you into the wellconcealed courtyard and there’s a secret garden waiting for you to explore. The leafy green interior, open to guests in the warmer months, feels like its own private garden for those in the know. Decked out with plants, flowers, and a warm Sag Harbor breeze, it’s the garden you didn’t know you needed. Bridgehampton’s Topping Rose House has a hardto-forget garden atmosphere, perfect for dining in when temperatures start to rise. Whether you duck in for brunch, lunch, or dinner at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s delicious spot (and whether you opt for the pizza, the kale salad, or the hulking 28-day dry-aged rib eye for two), you’re sure to find peace of mind in the green and serene surroundings.

A

s spring springs on the South Fork, consider bringing a little of that garden inspo into your dining life. Greenery — whether it’s on your plate or in your surroundings — doesn’t have to be relegated to your backyard. The East End has some of the most beautiful garden-inspired restaurants, and, this spring, you should consider paying them a visit. Take a tour of the Hamptons through some of the greenest, most garden-inspired restaurants we have to offer. It’s not always what’s on your plate that counts

Fresno

(although that helps, too). Sometimes, the best garden vibes are in your very own backyard. If your travels find you in East Hampton, duck into Carissa’s, on Pantigo Road, where a petite, Parisian-styled garden, teems with greenery all around. Inside, the abundant menu — which changes seasonally — highlights not only Carissa Waechter’s baked goods, but also a host of savory items. Herbs are cut from planter boxes on the restaurant’s walkway. It’s the essence of the garden, right off of one of the Hamptons’ busiest roads.

Southampton’s Tutto il Giorno is always a delightful (and surprisingly green) destination for an al fresco lunch or dinner. The restaurant’s patio is shrouded in plantings, making it feel like its own private oasis — an escape from the busy, bustling sidewalks of Southampton. Right down the road, at Sant Ambroeus, with its narrow alleyway that has been transformed into bespoke outdoor seating, lunch is served outside, in a transformative garden, full of muted greens. At T Bar, don’t let the location near the always busy train station fool you. A curated outdoor garden brings a burst of greenery. Potted plants and sky-high shrubs surround an ample dining area, where guests can order steakhouse classics on warm spring and summer evenings. It’s the perfect way to spend an evening — an ode to spring, and all the warm months that come after.

At David Loewenberg’s Fresno, a pergola shades a lovely outdoor garden space (known, in season, as the rosé garden). The restaurant, which serves delightful seasonal fare, is perfect for delving into oysters on the half shell, a grilled skirt steak with arugula salad, or even the signature burger, served with pommes frites. DIY GARDEN

A

BY JENN NEUBAUER

fter what has felt like an incredibly long Winter, Spring is finally here. One of my absolute favorite parts of Spring are all the unique and magical flowers it brings. There is something special about bringing flowers into your home. It has a way of not only brightening up your space but the scents and colors are sure to shift your mood and bring in a bright and cheerful energy. Spring brings many beautiful holidays and it’s always a good idea to have a festive and earthy centerpiece as the focal point on your table. We gathered some of our favorite flowers from a local flower shop, Westhampton Beach Flowers, and decided to keep it more whimsical. I dug into my collection of vintage vases and thought some varying colors and sizes would look nice in a shallow box. Adding different sizes and colors allows for multiple focal points and can also add some texture to your centerpiece.

FLOWERS WE CHOSE TO USE: Tulips Ranunculus Daffodil Anemone Hellebores Hyacinth FILLER: Chamomile Assorted Mixed Greens STEPS: 1. Choose your vessel or vessels. 2. Create a base with your filler greens. 3. Create your focal point with your taller flowers. 4. Add your filler flowers.

4

Step away, turn the arrangement and make sure it’s balanced from all angles. When creating any floral arrangement, I always start with the filler greens first. It creates structure and allows for a base to then plug flowers into. Once you’ve dressed all your vases with your filler greens it’s time to insert your flowers. I begin by putting in the tallest stems first to create a focal point. It can help if you can move your centerpiece around in a circle to make sure the arrangement is balanced on all sides. Once you add height you can begin to insert the mid layer of flowers. Finally you can fill in the empty spaces with your filler flowers. It’s fun to create and most importantly to play so have fun with your arrangement and make it all your own. Happy Spring!

HAVE A SEAT Hummingbirds fly through the flowers on this artistically designed Hummingbird Cast Iron Garden Bench by Painted Sky. “A bench is a nice touch in the garden,” says garden designer Elizabeth Finley. “Even if it’s in a spot where you would rarely go, a bench in a clearing, if it’s seen from a window or a walkway, is an invitation to mentally go there and enjoy a bit of relaxation amid the greenery.” WildlifeWonders.com $530

SIZE MATTERS Looking to make a design statement? Large pots or urns with or without plants can make a dramatic visual impact. Designers use them to direct traffic, create paths, or develop a focal point. An infinite variety of sizes, shapes, and colors are available at garden centers such as Marders in Bridgehampton.
