14,000 SF

Modern 8 Bedroom Pondfront Estate

Sagaponack. With a new attractive price and elements of scale and architecture that could not be reproduced in this location today, a beautifully landscaped acre on Crestview Lane along 125’ of Fairfield Pond plays host to a magnificent 14,000 SF, 8-bedroom modern estate recently completed near the ocean in Sagaponack. Masterfully scripted by Brian O’Keefe, the architect employed fundamental principles of balance, proportion, function, and beauty to synthesize classical design principles with a contemporary aesthetic. Charles Allem, principal of C.A.D International, was engaged as Design Director and Interior Designer with overall project oversight. His vision for this property was to create an experience driven by his client’s lifestyle. He established a color palette of taupe and beige punctuated by black. Charles embraced the use of natural honed materials as in bronze, stone, and leather. Complimented by hand woven linen textiles to achieve a casual sophisticated look and cohesive experience, he was able to achieve a restrained, sophisticated, and balanced residence that was both meticulously curated and eminently livable. Indeed, the drama gradually unfolds as you walk past the marble waterfall wall and through a marine -grade stainless-steel sliding door into a 9,000 SF contemporary sanctuary of wood and stone that reveals the expansive living room warmed by a fireplace. The modern Poliform designed kitchen anchors the center of the residence that flows to both the sumptuous fireplaced family room as well as the formal dining room augmented by a butler’s pantry. A bedroom suite overlooking both pool and pond completes this first floor. Upstairs the serene and privately sited master wing, with both pond and ocean views, offers luxurious onyx clad bath and dual closets. A continuous walkway, acting in the words of O’Keefe, as a “brise-soleil”, connects 4 additional bedrooms suites. Climbing from outside the second-floor office, a staircase finds the 4,600 SF roof deck, an amenity no longer permitted in this tony hamlet, offering bar, multiple seating areas and incredible 360° views out to the Atlantic and neighboring farm fields. An elevator descends to the 5,000+ SF lower level which includes screening room, recreational area, billiard room with bar, wine cellar, 2 staff suites and an entire wellness center with gym and spa that includes steam, sauna, hot tub. cold plunge and massage room. A spacious covered loggia provides for outdoor dining and the main level Foussena Grigia stone slab flooring extends out in all directions blurring the line between indoor and outdoor. And in fact, this covered patio with extensive built-in kitchen and comfortable seating overlooks the unique two-sided heated Gunite pool with a nearby sunken fire-pit framed by a stone courtyard. Elaborate landscaping by Edmund D. Hollander Design creates a verdant tableau while also forming a natural wall from neighboring properties. Amenities include a Crestron controlled environment with whole house audio, Reilly windows, Lutron controlled lighting and shades, extensive CCTV and a generator. Stunningly compelling and awaiting its next act, this incomparable and irreplaceable seaside estate is now available to preview. Exclusive. $22.5M WEB# 870429

Bridgehampton. You’ve always dreamt about that 6,000 +/- SF stucco French country house you’d buy, perhaps on Butter Lane, set on a lush acre among the farm fields of Bridgehampton. but close enough to walk to exercise studios, transportation, and the village shops and restaurants that define this charming village. The fact that it was designed by local architect Michael Behringer and built by the late Ben Krupinsky would be a huge plus. Hopefully, the property would have a gated entry that opens to a circular driveway and a two-car garage. Of course, you would want gorgeous interiors including a living room with a fireplace, a separate den and a first-floor guest suite to encourage weekends of fabulous entertaining while you and your family are comfortably ensconced upstairs in four ensuite bedrooms. Wouldn’t it be nice too if you could just plop your furniture in without having to do any renovations? Certainly, you imagine the languorous al fresco lunches and intimate moonlit dinners you’ll enjoy on your pergola covered back patio with comfortable seating areas, all prepared in the eat-in country kitchen with a large center island and professional Viking appliances. And didn’t your wish list include a fully finished lower level with recreational areas, a staff bedroom and a full bath? And naturally, you’d expect a nearly 50’ heated Gunite pool with ample room for lounge chairs and an outdoor living room all framed by a sea of verdant lawn, colorful plantings, and mature perimeter trees to ensure privacy. And in a perfect scenario, you’d have a whole house Sonos system reaching to the pool area, public water, security system and very low taxes. Well, I just happen to have one if you’re still in the market. You’d better hurry though as there aren’t any 6-bedroom, 7 bath Hampton retreats like this hanging around at the moment. Yes, your dreams can come true if you are nimble enough to preview this newly listed property at an incredibly attractive price in an enviable location. Exclusive. $5.725M WEB# 894359

GOOD NEWS GOSSIP ABOUT OUR NOTABLE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS BY DAWN WATSON

sexualized in the heralded feature film Pretty Baby at the age of 12.

In the film, Shields confronts the predatory violence that she experienced as a young girl and turns that into a sense of powerful agency as an adult woman. There are some rough parts, but it’s well worth watching.

STILL WAITING FOR AN ANSWER

SECRET OF HIS SUCCESS

What happens when an incurable optimist contracts an incurable disease? We’re about to find out when Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, starts streaming on Apple TV+ on May 12.

The film, which chronicles the life of the retired actor, producer, television director, activist, and advocate, combines documentary, archival, and scripted elements to share the award-winning actor’s extraordinary story in his own words. Intimate and honest, Still has got it all — from the rise of an undersized kid who became one of the most recognizable actors of the 1980s to the neverbefore-seen private journey, including the years that followed his diagnosis, at the age of 29, with Parkinson’s disease.

Starring the Quogue family, including Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, as well as their four kids, the movie also features Andrew Barber, who plays Georgica resident, Steven Spielberg. The film was produced and directed by East End frequenter, Davis Guggenheim, who’s responsible for An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for “Superman,” It Might Get Loud, etc.

YOU GO GIRL

If you’re into documentaries and tales of true life, and who isn’t these days, there’s another powerful film that’s high on the recommendation list. Streaming on Hulu in April, it’s called Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields and it tells the story of Southampton resident, actor, model, and spokesperson who was

It’s always fun to see and hear Westhampton resident Ann Liguori talking about golf. That’s especially so when the award-winning sports talk show host, network golf correspondent and author, and Ann Liguori Foundation Charity Golf Classic founder gets an extra share of the spotlight in the Netflix megahit docuseries Full Swing.

During Episode 5, set at the US Open press conference, she asks Phil Mickelson “What does legacy mean to you, and do you think your legacy will change?” Even though the PGA defector voices his displeasure at the question and deflects, we’re glad to see the question asked.

Ann’s radio show, Talking Golf, returns on WFAN in April, just in time for the 2023 Masters at Augusta National. Catch her on-air on Sundays from April through September on WFAN and the CBS Sports Radio Network.

INTERNATIONAL TASTE

Joy of joys, Top Chef is back and bigger than ever. Expanded to include winning chefs from all around the globe, the Bravo food hit is now in its 20th season.

Set in London, and starring North Fork resident and chef, Tom Colicchio, this season promises to be one of the best ever to air.

Top Chef: World All-Stars features a couple of familiar faces from the American series — host and Hamptons habitué Padma Lakshmi; judge Gail Simmons; and competitors Dawn Burrell, Sara Bradley, and Amar Santana — as well as chefs from the Top Chef series based in France, Brasil, MENA, Canada, Italia, Mexico, Thailand, Canada, Germany, and Poland. Yummy, yummy!

THE LAST WORLD TOUR

Wish we could say it ain’t so but unfortunately, we can’t. It’s going to be the end of a hit-making era for Amagansett’s Mick Jones and his Juke Box Hero band, Foreigner.

It’s Urgent that we get tickets to the band’s Historic Farewell Tour, which is now staging across the country, and beyond. The band, whose hits include Cold As Ice, Hot Blooded, I Want to Know What Love Is, Feels Like the First Time, and so many more, has announced that the final concert is scheduled for September in Indio, California.

Here’s a few fun facts about Jones that you might not know. He began his career opening for the Rolling Stones in pubs in South London. He’s also produced 10 multi-platinum albums and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Jones has co-written songs with Lou Gramm, Eric Clapton, and Ozzy Osbourne and produced Van Halen’s 5150, Bad Company’s Fame and Fortune and Billy Joel’s Storm Front.

ONE MORE GOODBYE

Quogue resident Doug Geed is soon to be signing off from News 12 Long Island. One of the original team members from the station’s launch in 1986, the News at Ten anchor is the creator, producer, and host of the Emmy Award-winning The East End show.

Geed has earned 10 Emmys and was named Journalist of the year by the LI Press Club in 2004. His last show will be in July.

HOT SALES AND LISTINGS WITH A DOLLOP OF HAMPTONS GOSSIP BY

It’s spring, folks! And we know what that means: daffodils, birds making nests, and big deals that went down in the past few months becoming public. First up is an enormous price for a large oceanfront parcel, and second is an enormous price for a tiny oceanfront parcel. Only in the Hamptons, folks.

LIVIN’ LARGE IN EAST HAMPTON

Developer Peter Fine managed an extremely impressive flip in January. The sprawling oceanfront property at 26 and 32 Windmill Lane, East Hampton, closed on January 11 for a stunning $91.5 million, three years after it sold for $45 million. The 6.7 acre property, which was not publicly on the market, was built in 1989 for former Union Pacific president and chairman James Evans. There’s a main house with a 50-foot

pool, as well as a separate guest house with its own pool.

The buyers were anonymous LLCs, as usual, ruining our looky-loo fun. Newco Windmill LLC paid $77.775 million for the 5.4 acres on 32 Windmill Lane, and Newco Windmill 2 LLC paid $13.725 million for 26 Windmill, with 1.3 acres.

The main home totals 5,500 square feet with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. Extensive patios and balconies take in the ocean view, including a space with a very nice pergola as well as a private path to the beach. The 1,500 square foot guesthouse, built in the 1950s, offers three bedrooms. Is 7,000 square feet just too teensy for today’s buyer? As the previous listing pointed

out, “Zoning would allow a 12,477 square foot new oceanfront residence (plus full finished lower level) and new 6,040 square foot (plus full lower level) cottage on the inland parcel.” Yesss! We’ll be interested to see what happens here.

LIVIN’ SMALL IN MONTAUK

An off-market oceanfront trailer in Montauk Shores community is in contract for an amazing $3.75 million. That’s correct; that’s the price of a less-than-800-square-foot unit. The previous record was $1.85 million.

Unit 15 was “a custom build” by noted contractor John Hummel. The two-bedroom, two-bath condo includes 180-degree views of the ocean from the living room and deck. Now, this tiny house doesn’t look like the rusty trailers

36
Livin’ Large in East Hampton Photo: Dead On Design

associated with mobile home parks. There is cedar siding outside and high-end finishes inside. (Well, they better be for that price.) A gas fireplace, an ensuite bathroom for the primary bedroom, and an outdoor shower round out the beachy amenities.

The gated Montauk Shore boasts 900 feet of coastline and access to some of the best surfing on the East Coast. There is also a clubhouse, a heated swimming pool, a playground and a community garden. Will Gold from The Atlantic Team of Douglas Elliman brought the buyer.

LIVIN’ LARGE IN PALM BEACH

Headlines were made recently when Rush

Limbaugh’s Palm Beach estate sold for a cool $155 million, a record for the area. Turns out the buyer was billionaire William Lauder of the cosmetics family. Lauder is worth about $3.5 billion, so $155 million is a mere bag of shells to him. In any case, Lauder recently sold two parcels in the same area for a combined $200 million, both of which had houses that were demolished.

The 2.7 acre property, which comprises three homes — 1495 North Ocean Boulevard, 1501 North Ocean Boulevard, and 108 Mediterranean Road — was purchased by Limbaugh in 1998 for $3.9 million. The property boasts 250 feet of ocean frontage, a two-story library described as a “scaled-down version” of that at North Carolina’s

Biltmore Estate, a pool, a putting green, and a guard station for 24-hour security services.

LIVIN’ MEDIUM IN NORTH HAVEN

Congrats and welcome to Thom Filicia, the Queer Eye alum and interior designer who purchased an attractive home in North Haven last year for $4 million. The gated property Filicia chose includes 1.8 acres of land. It’s not waterfront, but there’s a very attractive water view and access to a private beach and community tennis courts. The house consists of three old shingled barns knocked together; in total there are five bedrooms and four bathrooms in 2,840 square feet. Extensive pergolas and decking expand the living space further, and there’s a gunite swimming pool and spa.

The property was listed with agents Cindy Scholz and Chelsea Baetz at Compass. Judging by Filicia’s interior design work, he will make the place even more gorgeous than it was when he bought it.

PRICE CHOP

The asking price on Alec Baldwin’s longtime property in Amagansett has been dropped again, now down to $22.5 million. Scott Bradley and Michael N. Cinque of Saunders & Associates represent the listing.

On the market since September, the current ask price is $6.5 million less than when it first hit the market last September asking $29 million. In January, the price dropped to $24.9 million, and now it’s lower again. (Frankly, while a lovely property, $29 million was a serious reach.)

The actor, who is facing involuntary manslaughter charges in the 2021 shooting death of a cinematographer on the set of the movie Rust, has purchased another country home in Vermont for his family.

MODERN SUSTAINABLE

Located at 26 Cedar Street, a veteran team of Young Developers, Oza Sabbeth Architects, and Modern Green Home have just completed a stunning net-zero home in the heart of East Hampton Village nestled on a deep flag lot abutting the Historical Farm Park. This “FutureReady Modern Home” is represented by The Krae-Lylla Team of Saunders & Associates.

“This sets the standard for sustainable development in the Hamptons,” says Krae Van Sickle, “…and is a true ‘modern’ in the sense that

37
Livin’ Small in Montauk Livin’ Large in Palm Beach

it delivers the ultimate in luxury living now while considering the well-being of future generations.”

This barn-style home is an architectural gem that takes full advantage of the dramatic, fully open, and private shy 2-acre property. The home is built for better indoor air quality, using low VOC materials, and to be fully net-zero, generating as much energy as it consumes. “We are thrilled to be working on this project and to be able to offer such a forward-thinking, sustainable option for modern living in the heart of East Hampton,” said Lylla Carter. “This home represents the best

of modern luxury and mindful design, and we can’t wait for people to see it.”

CH-CH-CHANGES

David Blumenfeld joined the Brown Harris Stevens team after an extensive real estate career in Philadelphia, where he purchased, developed, managed, and sold over one billion dollars in real estate assets. Residing in East Hampton, he has extensive knowledge of Hampton hamlets and villages, with the real estate market and technical understanding to support all his clients and ensure they continue to get only the best

results. David is a member of the New York and Pennsylvania Bar and holds Real Estate Brokers Licenses in both states as well.

David and his wife have maintained a house in Wainscott since 2011 and after vacationing here for years have made it their year-round home. In addition to enjoying the many activities and pursuits available on the East End with their yellow Labrador Retriever Rosie, including, of course, the beach, the Blumenfelds especially enjoy the Hamptons International Film Festival.

A SAGAPONACK NEW-BUILD AFFORDS

Building a house on the east end of Long Island is not for the faint of heart. Matthew Miller, the founder of the Manhattan architecture and interiors firm StudioLAB, knows this from direct experience, having designed, built, and decorated his own family’s home in Sagaponack in 2019. As if that weren’t enough, he also took on the formidable challenge of acting as the project’s general contractor. This baptism by fire led Miller to start a secondary company that specializes in design-build projects in the Hamptons.

A few months after Miller completed his house, a neighbor paid him a visit. He was so taken by Miller’s place that he ended up enlisting StudioLAB to design, build, and decorate one much like it for his young family. Not exactly like it, mind you, but a bigger iteration. (Needless to say the furniture and finishes are different, and there are some other critical differences too.)

“It’s a play on a modern farmhouse in the Hamptons,” Miller says of the 6,000-square-foot structure distributed on two stories. “Super-traditional houses can be a little boring, and they lack some of the nicer aspects of a modern house such as light and views and a more open feeling. More glass.”

In Miller’s design, that means long runs of double-height windows that reflect wonderful soft daylight back into the rooms. “This house is a long rectangle,” says Miller, “which gives you two-sided spaces that have light from both sides. The light is filtered so it never picks up too much heat.”

The house consists of three separate volumes — two gables and a central volume — that form a single contiguous mass via a bridge. In

addition to serving as connective tissue, the bridge creates, among other things, a natural sense of privacy. Miller located the family’s sleeping quarters on the second floor, with the childrens’ bedrooms in one gable and the primary bedroom suite in the other so that “the kids and the parents feel private in their wing.”

Common areas are on the ground floor, and a two-bedroom guest suite is tucked away on the first floor.

“What I think is important in a house is a clear understanding of public and private zones,” says Miller, “You don’t want them to criss-cross. You don’t want to walk out from your bedroom to the kitchen.”

What Miller calls ‘public zones’ — the kitchen and living room and dining room — are openplan, each flowing into the other. The effect is airy and sleek with lots of shiplap (Miller likes it because he feels it has a softer look

than drywall), oak floors, and white walls. The furniture is a mix of mid-century modern and Scandinavian-inspired in hues of blue and grey.

“In general I like to put the accents of a house into the furnishings rather than on the walls,” says Miller. “I’d rather paint a living room bright white and have a blue sofa than paint the walls blue and have a grey sofa. We like

to keep things neutral and light, especially in the Hamptons. Furnishings and artwork are opportunities to create pops of color.”

Most new-builds are delivered empty, leaving the homeowners to scramble to furnish it. But when this house was handed over — twelve months after construction commenced — it was dressed to the nines. “We don’t have every piece

of furniture picked out from the beginning,” Miller elaborates, “but during the course of the build we figure out what we’re going to order so that when the construction is finished all that stuff is there. Through 3D renderings, we can figure out what everything is going to look like and we get a really good understanding of the house.”

HAMPTONS GARDEN GLORY

EAST HAMPTON GARDENS OWNER MICHAEL GIANNELLI SHARES THE BLOOMING TRENDS OF SPRING.

After spending 30 years working in fashion design at Gap, Loft, and Victoria’s Secret, Michael Giannelli decided to purchase East Hampton Gardens (EHG) for his birthday and move to the Hamptons full-time.

“I was a client of Carol and Brian’s (the previous shop owners) for twenty years and always joked that I would buy the store one day,” shares Michael. “They decided to retire, I decided to move east, and the rest is history!” HRES catches up with the East End’s favorite garden whisperer, below.

HRES: How did you get interested in bringing home, garden, and landscape design to your dynamic fashion career repertoire?

MICHAEL: Literally, when I celebrated The Big 5-0, I said “Michael it’s time for a change” and the first thing I did was stop listening to people. There were so many doubters “what about this?, what about that?, how much is it going to cost?, etc.” Too much negativity kills a dream. I had a dream, a vision, plus the support of my partner, Greg, and made it happen!

HRES: Can you explain the services you currently offer at EHG as multi-talented interior designer/ landscaper/retailer?

MICHAEL: I’ve learned so much growing up in

retail and how to merchandise a shop or a line of clothing. It is a real passion of mine to bring the story to life within the shop and the grounds of the nursery. We incorporate water features, gravel pathways, and a small barn, and are constantly merchandising the grounds to make it fresh all season long. For the interiors, we partner with Greg Shano Interiors, www.gregoryshano.com and he takes the lead. For the landscape design and retail that is all me.

HRES: The East Hampton Garden shop is a beautiful jewel box, what was your inspiration for the store design?

MICHAEL: Our signature is a navy and white stripe with kelly green ribbon. My partner Greg Shano executed the interior design of the shop and added beautiful wallpapers and details to the interior. I’ve always loved Palm Beach, so we took some inspiration from different interiors and used white bamboo etageres, brass tables, and stone garden tables as the fixtures for the shop.

HRES: Your shop has a nostalgic aura to it, with pieces made for homes to give them an approachable luxury element. What products are you seeing for Spring that our readers would love?

MICHAEL: I love entertaining whether in the

garden or in the home so we have a lot to offer in that category: Great new napkins, and tablecloths, placemats, napkin rings, glasses, and bamboo flatware. We also have great barware, Christofle silver pieces, William Yeoward crystal. For outdoor entertaining, we have a beautiful line of melamine dishes and serving pieces and Italian acrylic

50

glassware that looks and feels like glass but won’t shatter and destroy your pool.

HRES: What interior trends are you loving for Spring?

MICHAEL: What I’m seeing is people really love neutrals in a coastal way. Adding rattan, seagrass carpets, and Sunbrella fabrics that don’t fade into their interiors. We have some really great pieces that can add a coastal feel to your home but we love to mix them up with some more color and prints.

HRES: How do you describe your landscape design style, and which are your favorite plantings?

MICHAEL: I love the perfectly imperfect English garden style but I must give it structure. I love boxwood, Hydrangeas, Peony, Roses, Lilac, Camellias, and topiary. I have an old fashion take on gardening. I love a formal parterre, and a knot garden, and love to establish garden rooms. Even if you have a small space it is really fun to design different destinations one for dining, one for lounging, a small pool, etc.

HRES: Which is your favorite service you offer and why?

MICHAEL: I love to take a very personal approach to garden design and partner with clients to ensure their vision is achieved. I bring a ton of ideas and inspiration and walk the grounds with the client and find out how they use the property. Do they want an herb garden, perennial garden, shade/woodland garden, outdoor ping-pong table, or whatever they can dream up. It really is fun when you click with the client and they give you the freedom to create a beautiful space.

HRES: Which trends in landscape design are you loving?

MICHAEL: Unfortunately, the low-maintenance garden seems to always come up. I am a believer that really doesn’t exist. Any garden needs tending. What I love is not designing into a “trend” but designing a classic, beautiful space. Classics last forever, and trends come and go.

HRES: What do you do for fun when you’re not working on beautiful homes and gardens?

MICHAEL: I love going to the beach early in the morning with our dog Harper, and walking with friends. I love meals at home with friends, game nights, and movie nights. I try to avoid crowds, especially after a long day at the shop. I could never leave the beautiful light, sunsets, and beaches of the East End....once I see the water I instantly relax.

BRING THE GARDEN TO DINNER

Sdining. Check out some of our favorite East End restaurants, all of which have one thing in common: outdoor spaces that will transport you straight from the East End to the botanical vista of your dreams. Read on for some of our favorite places to sit outside this spring.

Since 1996, Christian Mir and his wife, Elaine DiGiacomo, have been elevating the Quogue dining scene at the Stone Creek Inn. Although the indoor dining room is its own treasure to behold, spring and summer diners can also enjoy the gorgeous outdoor environs underneath a tent, which is lit by Edison bulbs and which has an unobstructed view of the property’s tall trees and green grasses. There, guests can enjoy the restaurant’s signature tuna tartare, made with fresh ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi caviar (or with a supplemental 10 grams of Siberian Supreme caviar); grilled Portuguese octopus with roasted grape tomatoes, olives, potatoes, lemon confit, and Espelette pepper; or Long Island duck meatballs, served atop whipped potatoes with an apple cider reduction. For dessert, don’t skip an opportunity to lounge outside while dipping the fresh beignets into the caramel-bourbon sauce.

chairs perched on the restaurant’s verdant lawn offer the perfect place for a pre-dinner drink. Order the Hot & Dirty, a signature cocktail made with houseinfused vodka, olive juice, Tabasco, smoked paprika oil, and a Danish blue cheese-stuffed olive. The dining options are plentiful, but some unforgettable dishes include the mussels vadouvan, cooked in a ginger-curry-cider broth and served with grilled bread. The almond flounder is an ode to Starr Boggs, who occupied the hallowed space before: it’s a crusted piece of fish served with whipped sweet potatoes, seasonal vegetables, rum-glazed bananas, and a citrus beurre blanc.

Hampton Bays’ Canoe Place Inn, which opened last year, has its own bespoke dining venue known as the Good Grounds Tavern. The hotel has plenty of beautiful outdoor spaces, where guests can enjoy the majesty of the East End. While dining, dig into Executive Chef Ülfet Ralph’s award-winning cuisine, which focuses on local agriculture and seafood. The caviar martini, featuring local Sagaponack potato vodka, pickled potato, and, naturally, caviar, is the perfect start for a spring-festive dinner. Follow it up with a fresh seafood dinner of bouillabaisse, made from local sea bass, clams, mussels, and fennel.

in Bridgehampton, which specializes in pizza from a magnificent brick-oven, diners can sit in an adjacent, perfectly green patio that looks out onto the village’s Main Street. This is where the former World Pie once was, and the outdoor space remains equally charming, with strung lights canopied over the petite, green space. The menu, however, has grown in both scope and ambition. Order the San Daniele pizza, a thin-crusted version served with 36-month-aged San Daniele prosciutto di Parma. Or an expertly cooked friarelli pie, topped with broccoli rabe, sweet sausage, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. No matter how you slice it, dinner outside at Dopo is a lovely, green affair.

EXCITING LANDSCAPE DESIGN TRENDS FOR YOUR HOME

It’s almost spring, when a homeowner’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of landscaping and gardening. If that’s where your mind has been venturing lately, you’re not alone. And if you’re in the mood for something new and different than the same old look your home’s exterior has sported for years, why not consider getting trendy this year? Here are five emerging landscape design trends for 2023 that’ll spruce up your home beautifully.

DUMP THE LAWN ENTIRELY

We know what you’re thinking — but take a deep breath. Yes, you’re absolutely allowed to eschew the glossy emerald expanse of a perfectly maintained lawn altogether. In fact, doing so will save water, trim maintenance expenses, and reduce or eliminate entirely your reliance on harmful pesticides and herbicides.

Swap out your high-maintenance grass for

plants that are friendly to pollinators and much easier to care for, or create a lovely, wild meadow instead. Or build yourself a soothing rock garden, or even turn the entire yard into a food- and herb-producing garden.

You’ll want to check to make sure your plans are permissible under your local ordinances. Otherwise, the beauty of a lawnless yard is that there really aren’t any strict rules. You can create the look that’s right for your needs and lifestyle while helping the environment at the same time. That’s a trend we can get behind!

GOING LOCAL WITH INDIGENOUS PLANTS

Avoid the merry-go-round of slavishly adopting generic gardening trends from national publications and embrace the indigenous bounty of our local region. Choosing indigenous plants helps ensure vibrant growth cycles, healthy plants, and less reliance on chemicals.

From trees such as gray birch, American beech, flowering dogwood, and Atlantic white cedar, to plants such as purple coneflower, black-eyed Susans, lady fern, and blue flag iris, this area is home to any number of vibrant plants that will thrive in local soil. Consider getting your soil tested and checking with your local cooperative extension office to make sure you’re choosing a good mix of indigenous plants that work with your home’s access to moisture and shade, as well as its soil type and pH.

REUSE AND RECYCLE LANDSCAPE MATERIALS

If you’re eco-conscious but not quite ready to eliminate the lawn completely just yet, try looking for landscaping materials and ideas from unusual sources. Repurposed building materials such as old bricks or reclaimed wood can provide imaginative, aesthetically pleasing borders and walkways for your landscape design. To get started, start digitally with a simple

58
Maximalist — Photo: JR Harris

Google search for reclaimed landscaping materials near you. In addition to lumber yards and reclaimed wood suppliers, anything from nurseries to contractors can be a valuable resource. You may prefer to consult with a professional landscaper, however, since they’ll have existing connections and sources that might not be open to individual purchasers.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

Call it interiorscaping, or just bringing a bit of nature inside. Whatever you label it, staging your interiors with some healthy green houseplants, potted trees, and even interior courtyards will help you enjoy the lushness of nature all year long. You can adopt this trend in a number of ways:

• Add hardy plants to your entryway to help greet guests and residents, while providing a transitional space between the outside world and the comforts of home.

• Consider adding a dedicated greenspace to a room with excellent lighting and exposure, such as a sunroom or sitting room with an exterior wall.

• Think vertically by creating plant arrangements with variations in height along a single wall. Use planters, plant stands, trellises, hanging baskets,

and other containers to create that height differential.

• Expand your houseplant collection by adding more unusual varieties for more color, texture, and visual interest. Look for plants with larger leaves and unusual shapes.

Consult with a professional gardener or landscaper to make sure you know how to care for your interior plants and to ensure nothing you bring inside presents a health risk to small children or pets.

EMBRACE EXUBERANT MAXIMALISM

Maximalist design isn’t just for interiors anymore. You can go riotously bold and joyfully colorful out of doors, too. The general principle is to combine a variety of design elements, from color to volume, from height to texture.

Think “wild abundance” — lots of full, lush plants in raised beds with a variety of colors and leaf shapes to add height and breadth to your landscaping plan. Leave a safe walkspace to get around your yard to keep it looking intentional without verging into overgrown and messy.

ON THE COVER: PERFECTION IN WATER MILL

Featured on this month’s cover is a property appropriately titled “Perfection in Water Mill.” It’s a stunning home built and designed for the quintessential Hamptons lifestyle. HRES caught up with Tim Davis of Corcoran. Tim is a top producer in the Hamptons, and is representing this wonderful property.

HRES: Your featured listing on the April front cover is appropriately titled “Perfection in Water Mill.” Can you tell our readers what makes this home so special?

TD: With a keen focus on design and “luxury living”, this home is in perfect condition. Also, the systems and infrastructure of the home and property are up to date and efficient.

HRES: What makes a home a good investment in the Hamptons market?

TD: First off, the purchase is one that should suit one’s lifestyle. At a price point at the level of this property, the way one uses the house is often a factor. The ability to rent the home for the time that it’s not in use should also be a

consideration. Renting a home like 900 Head of Pond, even for as little as one month, can cover the carrying costs for the year.

HRES: What are some of the key design features that makes this home so desirable?

TD: The flow of space throughout the entertaining areas is seamless, with beautiful

public rooms spilling out on to the terraces, swimming pool, screened porch and great lawn. The kitchen is spectacular and meets the needs of even the best chef or guest looking to dive into preparing a wonderful meal. The outdoor kitchen provides equal opportunity while enjoying afternoon fun in the sun. The bedrooms are en-suite and the primary suite, quite separate and of good size; quite

60

appropriate for a home of this caliber. The lower level offers 12-foot ceilings and the ability to create some additional features beyond what currently exists.

HRES: Anything more you would like to let our readers know about this home?

TD: This is the kind of seller from whom one would want to purchase a home. Every attention to detail has been executed and all elements of the home have been “touched”. This home is available for immediate occupancy which means a buyer can enjoy all that this property has to offer in time for the summer season.

NOW TRENDING: AN EASIER HOUSEPLANT

THESE PRODUCTS MAKE GROWING THE GREEN STUFF INDOORS AN ACTUAL CINCH BY

Behold the black-thumbed monster. I’ve never met a houseplant I couldn’t kill. Until last year, that is, when I invested in a new plant on the market, Easyplant, a statement piece that promised me it could overcome my ability to destroy greenery that wasn’t ersatz. Would I be able to overcome my inability to stop killing plants? Only time would tell.

I ordered a Dragon Tree, a spiky plant hailing from Madagascar in the tallest size (it measures several feet) in a Deep Navy pot ($249). Easyplant prevents over- and under-watering. A reservoir

built into the pot allows you to fill it once per month; the water is then slowly distributed to the plant in a measured, perfect way. You can go on vacation without asking someone to stop by to water your houseplants, and the sleek, streamlined pots do not need to have a dingy plastic liner left underneath to catch spillover water. Everything is right in the container. It’s one of the most design-forward planters on the market, with extra points for how easy it is to use (and how impossible the plant is to kill, I’ve learned).

Houseplants come in a range of sizes and styles, from money trees to rubber trees to palms. Those looking to add indoor botanicals to their homes with minimal effort and relatively moderate cost should consider Easyplant. Pots come in a ton of different colors, and plants can be selected to suit whatever light your home has the most of. After 18 months, plants can be re-potted — so I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Easyplant isn’t the only brand making indoor greenery that much easier. Lettuce Grow, which facilitates indoor vegetable-growing with a starting price tag of $348, is worth considering if you’ve been missing out on crunchy greens in the colder months. This hydroponic machine relies on water that has been infused with nutrients and fertilizer to boost leaf and root growth. Roots grow long and outward, rather than into the ground, a visual reminder of how gardening actually works.

Lettuce Grow is a modern contraption that looks fashionable enough in any kitchen or sunroom. What’s even better is what it produces: crisp lettuce and herbs and, if you can manage to teach yourself the ins and outs of pollination, tomatoes,

cucumbers, and other members of the nightshade and melon families. The delight is in knowing that there’s very little fuss involved here: nary a spade, hoe, or tiller in sight (and no soil to mess around with, either). The lettuce sprouts irrespective of the weather, and the veggies can emerge even in the coldest days of winter.

Like Easyplant, Lettuce Grow is designed to help gardeners who aren’t necessarily naturally inclined toward making things flourish on their own. The machine does require the occasional tune-up, and, yes, if you feel more ambitious about planting, you may find yourself buried in a book when it comes to pollination. But, for the most part, both Lettuce Grow and Easyplant are both easy on the eyes and easy on the mind. And that’s ok! We could all use a little assistance sometimes.

START A GARDEN THIS YEAR!

Never tried gardening before? There’s nothing mysterious about it. Anyone can garden, and I believe everyone should, even if the garden is just a couple of plants in flowerpots. Gardening is the most rewarding of activities, giving us a chance to reestablish our connection with the natural world, and affording us the satisfaction of nurturing our own little bit of the Earth.

So, maybe this is your year to start a garden, and now’s the time. Give it a try — you might just find out that you enjoy it. If you have kids, get them involved too. Want more color in your life? Grow some flowers to enjoy outdoors or cut for a vase. Do you like to cook? Plant some fresh herbs —

basil and thyme, parsley and chives, rosemary, dill, tarragon — they’re a snap to grow if you buy plants. How about vegetables? There’s nothing like the flavor of a juicy ripe tomato picked from you garden and still warm from the sun, or crunchy sugar snap peas right off the vine.

We’re blessed with an abundance of local produce in summer from farmstands across the East End, so support our local farmers and shop there. But grow some of your own food and flowers, too. It’s not rocket science. Here’s how to get started.

First, pick a location for the garden. Look for a spot that gets full sunlight for 6 or more hours a day. If you haven’t got a bright enough place, try

gardening in some big pots on the deck or patio. Make sure your garden spot is within reach of a hose unless you’re planning to install an automatic watering system.

The East End has some of the best farmland in the country, but my property has sandy soil that’s not very fertile, so I add compost and other organic matter before planting. If this is your first garden, do yourself a favor and start small. If you want to hit the beach on some of those warm summer days, keep the garden small. You can always expand next year. You can lay out your garden in rows or beds, or in pots on the deck or patio.

Deciding what to grow is the fun part. If you want

to grow vegetables, plant what you like to eat. Leaf lettuce, arugula and mesclun are good bets for beginners. So are snap peas and beans. Tomatoes are a must. Eggplant has pretty purple flowers, and the oriental and Italian types bear long, slender fruits that are never bitter. If you want to include some herbs, grow the ones you use most often in the kitchen. Want some flowers? Plant them in colors you like. To have flowers for cutting, choose colors that will complement the colors of your rooms indoors.

As the plants grow, give your garden some TLC. Pull the weeds before they get big and overwhelm your plants. Or at least try to get them out before they bloom and scatter their seeds all over the garden. Water when the soil feels dry below the surface.

And above all, enjoy eating your own homegrown veggies and bringing indoors some fresh flowers you grew to decorate your home!

SOIL TESTING

To understand the growing conditions in your garden it’s a good idea to get your soil tested. Home testing kits are available at garden centers.

A great resource is the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Horticulture Diagnostic Lab. Gardeners can have a sample of their soil tested for pH and conductivity (soluble salts). Results can be sent via email or regular mail. Call them for information on how to take a soil sample from your garden and get it to them: (631) 727-4126.

GARDEN ADVICE: The Cornell Cooperative Extension can also help diagnose plant problems and diseases, answer questions about plants, gardens, landscapes and lawns, or identify insect and tick specimens.

Their office is located at 423 Griffing Ave. in Riverhead. Open weekdays 9am - 4 pm. Or call their information line Monday to Friday 9am to noon: (631) 727-4126

Owned by a farming family, this is a great resource for lawn and garden plants, tools, supplies, equipment and more for farmers and gardeners. Plants are also available during the growing season, and there’s a great selection of seeds. Bird lovers will find feeders, houses and food. There are also supplies for pets, and chickens (they have baby chicks in spring).

EATING AROUND THE WORLD IN THE PALM BEACHES

Photo: Will Fritz

South Florida’s global appeal is a big part of its popularity. The world descends on Palm Beach, with American self-made billionaires equally as common as South American industry leaders, European diplomats, and royals from farflung lands. On top of the diversity and thought leadership this awards to the area, there’s a lot of memorable meals waiting to be eaten. Below, see all the places your palette can travel within a short drive on or around the island.

THAILAND

Malakor Thai in West Palm Beach’s artsy Northwood Village is a long-term staple for authentic Thai cooking and heirloom recipes.

While Thai takeout is never a bad idea, it’s worth dining in to enjoy money bags, pad Thai, and sushi and on the foliage-laden, light-strung outdoor patio (complete with waterfall). This colorful spot will send you straight to The Land of Smiles.

VIETNAM BY WAY OF FRANCE

The February opening of a Le Colonial outpost in Delray Beach introduced new flavors to the Palm Beaches: the fresh, vibrant delights of FrenchVietnamese fusion cuisine. Treat your taste buds to unique menu items like Vietnamese seafood bouillabaisse and sesame beef ravioli.

FLORIBBEAN

You’ve had mouthwatering Southern BBQ but you’ve probably never experienced the wonder of Florida BBQ, which incorporates Caribbean ingredients, Florida meats, Cuban influences, and even ancient Taino traditions (accordingly, some Floridians would argue that barbecuestyle cooking actually originated in the Sunshine State!). Head to Tropical Smokehouse in West Palm Beach to experience a finger-licking meal unlike any you’ve had before.

CUBA

You don’t have to drive south to Miami or hop on a plane to the Caribbean to taste the flavors of true Cuba. Havana in West Palm Beach is a longtime local favorite pitstop for an unbeatable Cuban sandwich or a quick cafecito at the walkup window.

FRANCE

La vie en rose awaits and you don’t even have to leave the island. Book a table at La Goulue, where Francophilic gourmands descend for a bistrostyle experience and elegant French cuisine. Sit outside and watch the world go by or enjoy the warmly lit, romantic interiors.

UNCOVERING BURIED TREASURE

THE ART OF SYLVIA HOMMERT

Sylvia Hommert's art is not only visually pleasing but visceral. One can enjoy the aesthetic qualities and appreciate the creative craftsmanship, but the vibrant energy first strikes the viewer. "Light and the reflection of light, how it interacts in an environment, is a constant thread that flows through my work," explains Hommert. "My technique has evolved to capture light's liquid and fluid nature. I am drawn to materials that enhance and illuminate: pearly paua shell, metal leaf, holographic paper, crystalline mineral salts, beeswax, and resin. I create depth and texture by building up layers of materials from opaque to translucent to transparent, then using a flame to burn away portions. Exposing elements underneath hold a hint of mystery akin to uncovering buried treasure. Introducing dimension as a factor, I can express not only surface texture and depth but also different perspectives; the highs and lows offer yet

another way to play with and capture light."

With a stunning new home and studio in Sag Harbor to display and create her art, Hommert is on a high. Energized for her next chapter, she exudes the same inviting glow as her paintings. Art, however, is not just for the walls but incorporated into each aspect of her life. "I'm a visual artist," she explains, "I love setting the table or wrapping gifts or getting dressed or dressing others." This is no surprise as she began her career in fashion as a successful designer and then creative director for brands like Donna Karan, traveling the world. "I loved making textiles, and that translated into my artwork."

The chance to set down roots and have a studio in her loft when she was starting a family blossomed quickly into a growing art career where galleries embraced her right off the bat in 2000 with solo shows. Her work is now represented everywhere, from California to New Jersey and Uruguay to London, and some buyers even find her on Instagram.

Yet the East End has been home, and Hommert has embraced the art community. Sylvia is a Community Fellow at the Watermill Center, bringing the community to the artists and the artists into the community. You may find her dancing along with a performing arts group in residence at The Church, singing with a band at The Stephen Talkhouse in the Battle of the Fantasy Girl Bands, or participating in a shamanic healing ritual with her fellow artists who recently were at a group exhibit at the Kathryn Markel gallery in Bridgehampton curated by Heidi Lee-Komaromi. Or she may serve friends the most

stylish and welcoming afternoon tea. And speaking of tea, she will display her artwork paired with unique furniture pieces imported from Heritage Brazil at the Plain-T company in Southampton.

With the chance to design and build her studio, she is in the ultimate Virginia Woolf room of one's own moment. A specially ventilated space allows her to work with large trays of wax and resins, dressed in a respirator with protective clothing. "It's not like I am doing watercolors," she laughs. But the journey is as important as the destination, "It's like therapy. All the carving is hand done, hours of stroke after stroke, and I find it very calming."

And like the sunrise-to-sunset trajectory, she always captures the light.

HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU!

Mirror, mirror on the wall. Which shape is the fairest of them all? Curves, diamonds, hexagons, arches. Never have there been so many shapes from which to choose.

“Organic shapes in general are trending right now, and mirrors with irregular shapes bring more personality into a space better than a traditional mirror. Why not bring a little interest to something that was previously just practical and functional?” says Flora Antelmi, Sales Expert & Brand Ambassador at Ligne Roset New York, who provides interior design services through the flagship store in New York City. Also, “using a mirror as a substitute for a work of art will bring another dimension to your space. It adds the illusion of more space, rather than taking up visual space on your wall like an actual piece of art.”

DIAMOND ON THE WALL

This dramatic shaped mirror frames its subject in tessellated malachite, a precious stone believed to have healing properties. Each piece of stone is placed by hand on the frame and subtly reflects ambient light.

MONTMARTRE, MON AMOUR

THERE’S MUCH TO LOVE ABOUT THIS PARIS QUARTIER BY

The colossal sanity of Paris is strong enough to transform the worst unrealities of tourism,” the British architectural critic Ian Nairn observed. He was referring to Montmartre, the village-y quartier in the 18th arrondissement. Nairn pronounced Montmartre fake and unduly praised. Once home to Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Modigliani, Van Gogh and other Modernist icons, the streets around the Place du Tertre are perpetually overrun with tourists who fall hard for the neighborhood’s quaintness. But the northern part of Montmartre, near the steeply-pitched rue Martyrs, isn’t fake at all. Plus, it has recently benefited from a youthful infusion of energy. There you’ll find good cafés, bakeries, interesting restaurants run by ambitious young chefs, and more.

If it’s your first visit to Montmartre, start by getting your culture fix at the quartier’s eponymous museum. Located high on the hill known as La Butte, not only does the Musée de Montmartre have paintings by Toulouse-Lautrec,

Murillo, and others, it also has an entire gallery devoted to the lost art of the French can-can. Afterwards, it’s always a good idea to pay one’s respects to Degas, Nijinsky, and François Truffaut at the Montmartre Cemetery. Another must-see is the Bateau-Lavoire, the artists’ studios where Picasso painted his Garçon à la pipe and other foundational works. (A fire destroyed all but the façade of the original structure which was rebuilt in the late 70s). And while there are certainly more beautiful churches in Paris than the basilica of Sacré-Coeur, the views over the city from the terrace are staggering—yes, it is worth the climb. Once you’ve contemplated those sublime prospects, the only place to go is down, so to speak.

Earthly pleasures are in abundance at Gontran Cherrier, one of the most innovative bread bakeries in the city, where you can pick up a loaf of rye with red miso. The raffishly handsome Cherrier (tousled hair, muscled arms, five o’clock shadow) has a cult following among the Japanese.

Alternatively, do as the locals do and have your morning café crème at Rose Bakery, a veritable Anglo-Parisian institution. Or go straight to lunch. If you fancy a full-on meal, go to L’Arcane, “a culinary tour de force,” according to the Paris daily newspaper, L’Express (lobster and ravioli soup, anybody?). Recently awarded its first Michelin star, reservations are essential. If you’re in the mood for rustic deliciousness, head to Le Petit Bleu, a tiny Moroccan place that serves impeccably-prepared couscous, tagines, and other North African specialties.

Finally, stop in at Café des 2 Moulins, which achieved fame in the film Amélie. A fantasy? Absolutely, for you’re as unlikely to see Amélie (played by Audrey Tatou) behind the counter as you are to spot the ghosts of Matisse or Picasso darting down the street. Still, it’s a delightful place to while away an afternoon all the same. Long live the unrealities of Paris tourism!
