There was a collective gasp among Hamptons real estate agents the other day when it was reported that a miniscule 654 square-foot Sag Harbor edifice on shy of an acre was sold. Flower power. “Flowers add color and life to a space,” says Montgomery, who favors such outsize dramatic blooms as lilies and other flowers that don’t have a strong scent, which can overpower a room. 2. Lighten up. “Everything shows better in a well-lit room, even during the day,” she says. No matter how sunny the home, I always turn on all the lamps and overhead lights.” 3. Go minimalist. Montgomery says to remove every scrap of clutter, then take another look and remove even more clutter. 4. Ring dem bells. “Music establishes a mood, so if you have a sound system, use it.” 5. Refresh, refresh. If a client’s furniture looks like it’s from the eighties (or the fifties, for that matter), Montgomery will gently persuade them to redecorate. “Sometimes a $1,500 sofa is enough to carry the day,” she says. “Prospective home buyers like furniture that’s modern, clean-lined, and new.”

ou’re putting your home on the market: to stage or not to stage? Industry professionals and trade groups like to cite a federal Department of Housing and Urban Development statistic that staged homes command 17% higher prices than ones that are un-staged, but according to the New York Times, both the figure and the source are apocrypha.When it comes to home staging, objective facts and figures are hard to come by. Nevertheless, many top brokers—people with skin in the game— are of the opinion that hiring a professional home stager is a smart investment. “I’ve had a lot of success with homes I couldn’t sell,” says Vincent Horcasitas, an associate real estate broker at Saunders & Associates, “and as soon as I

staged them they sold immediately.” Among the professional stagers with whom Horcasitas works is Cindy Montgomery, who runs Stage By Design, LLC (www.stagebydesign.com). Currently based in Southampton, Montgomery works around the country, staging and/or designing as many as two hundred homes a year. Recently she designed and staged the interiors of an eight bedroom, nineand-a-half bath home in Southampton. Designed by Peter Cooke the house is on the market for $8.25 million. Within a month of receiving the green light, Montgomery had kitted out the ten thousand square foot structure with custom-built furniture of her own design, upholstered white sofas, a massive dining table carved from a tree trunk which was then polished to a

fine luster, and other appointments. The overall effect was that of a pristine hotel, a style that Montgomery characterizes as ‘luxe spa.’ “I’m trying to evoke emotions,” she says. “Ideally, you want to trigger the kinds of feelings that encourage people to linger.” Fee structures vary. Some staging companies charge for an initial consultation, others have set-up and monthly fees. Montgomery charges 1% of the total purchase price, not including the cost of furniture and materials, due at closing. She leaves the seller with instructions for maintaining the home in cameraready condition every day. he East End of Long Island is known for our beautiful beaches, farm fields, equestrian heritage and commercial fishing industry. Artists revere the quality of the light here.The East End is also a land of gardens—they’re an important part of what makes this area so special. Whether created and kept by home gardeners or designed for grand estates by top landscape architects and maintained by trained crews, all East End gardens thrive in particular sets of conditions.Those conditions vary depending on how close you are to the water, the type of soil present (which varies significantly) and the amount of sun or shade on the site. In addition to environmental challenges, East End gardeners contend with deer, which are a constant problem and whose numbers seem to increase every

Despite the challenges, the East End has an abundance of gardens, from pots of plants on decks and patios to backyard vegetable plots to small gardens to magnificent estate landscapes. There are opportunities to visit some of the grandest gardens in the Hamptons, on annual tours offered by non-profit organizations including Guild Hall in East Hampton and The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF). The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton hosts an annual Landscape Pleasures event that features a symposium followed by a selfguided garden tour. The Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons (www.hahgarden.org) also conducts tours of outstanding area gardens for members. Here are some of the best public gardens to visit on the East End. In Southampton Village, the Southampton Rose


The Madoo Conservancy, located in the heart of Sagaponack, is another must-see for lovers of plants and gardens. Established in 1967 by the renowned artist, gardener and writer Robert Dash, it is aptly described on their website as “a magical oasis set on an enchanting 2-acre landscape.” It is like no other garden, blending lush plantings, interesting structures, surprising colors and architectural details into a visual paradise. Created over decades, Madoo is an expression of Robert Dash’s artistic vision that continues as a living tribute to the artistic imagination of its founder. The garden is open to visitors on Fridays and Saturdays from May to mid-October, and hosts tours, classes, lectures, workshops and children’s programs. A winter lecture series features notable speakers from the worlds of horticulture, design and architecture. On the National Register of Historic Places, Madoo will be sure to inspire and delight.Visit their website www.madoo.org to learn more. Farther east, be sure to visit LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton. This 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden, founded by eminent textile designer Jack Lenor Larsen, is dedicated, as their website explains, to exploring the concept of landscape as an art form, and also demonstrating the broad range of plants that can be grown here in different environments. The gardens include works by Buckminster Fuller, Dale Chihuly, Willem DeKooning, Yoko Ono and others. LongHouse embraces world cultures and aims to “inspire a creative life.” In summer there are outdoor events including yoga classes, tours, concerts and an annual container garden show where you’ll see inventive creations by some of the premier landscape designers and firms in the Hamptons.Visit the website www.longhouse.org to learn more.

In Bridgehampton, under the auspices of Peconic Land Trust, Bridge Gardens is a 5-acre public and demonstration garden where you can explore a variety of perennial and annual flowers and shrubs, a beautiful rose garden, and a garden of herbs with culinary, medicinal and ornamental uses, as well as plants used to dye textiles. In addition to the beautifully maintained landscape, Bridge Gardens offers a variety of educational programs on horticulture, art and children’s activities, as well as concerts, from April to December. Society has created five public rose gardens at different locations.The main garden, not to be missed, is located next to the Rogers Memorial Library and is spectacular when the roses are in full bloom in May and June, and still colorful until fall. ongratulations to Water Mill’s Katie Lee, who got engaged this past month. It happened in Paris, the City of Love, while the host of “The Kitchen” and “Beach Bites with Katie Lee” was on a romantic vacation with her longtime love Ryan Biegel, an actor and television producer. One imagines the two met when Katie hosted the first season of Bravo’s “Top Chef ” way back in 2006, as Ryan is credited with working on the king of foodie reality shows during that time. Since, he’s appeared on “Scrubs,” “Cougar Town” and “Enlisted.” Coincidentally (not really), he’s served as producer on “Beach Bites.” Meanwhile, she’s appeared on a number of TV cooking shows, as well as one of our top picks, Darren Star’s “Younger.” Connecting the dots from Star, who created and produced “Sex and the City,” to Sag Harbor resident Candace Bushnell is a quick leap. As we all know, that particular anthology put the former New York Observer columnist on the worldwide map and spawned a huge television show and two movies. And now, we hear that the author of “Lipstick Jungle” and “The Carrie Diaries” is working on a new book. We should have the details by next month but for now, mum’s the word on the title and subject matter. Can’t wait to find out more about this one! Other huge happenings that we’re just too, too excited about include a “Sopranos” movie prequel apparently in the works. The working title is “The Many Saints of Newark,” penned by creator David Chase and writer Lawrence Konner. Let’s all keep all of our fingers crossed that Bridgehampton’s Lorraine Bracco—most recently on “Blue 54

Bloods”—and fellow Edie Falco—whose “The Land of Steady Habits” we can’t wait to see—get at least a nod in it. Probably not, but let’s dare to dream. Speaking of happy wishes, cheers are also in order for North Haven’s favorite fitness guru, who has lots of wonderful things to be excited about. Tracy Anderson got engaged in February to Scottish banker Nick Riley. And come May the entrepreneur and author will receive The Spirit of Life Award at City of Hope’s annual spring luncheon at The Plaza Hotel in New York. We’ve got more good news galore for the gals of the Hamptons this go-round. Ensemble reality show “Real Housewives of New York City” star, Luann de Lesseps, has a few solo turns coming up at Feinstein’s 54 Below in Manhattan in May. Known as “The Countess” she returns with her nightclub act, #CountessAndFriends, to the legendary venue. The show will include songs and lots of insider fodder about her glamorous life in front of the cameras and probably a few juicy tidbits too about what happens when they are turned off. It only seems appropriate to finish off this month with another tale of girl power, and hashtags. So, hats off to Southampton’s Tory Burch, who is continuing her global #EmbraceAmbition campaign. The fashion designer and businesswoman, who was named the 73rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2015, is taking that title seriously. Last year, the philanthropic designer and Tory Burch Foundation founder

launched the Embrace Ambition movement in the hopes of empowering female entrepreneurs. This year, she announced the inaugural Embrace Ambition Summit, which is happening this month. The event will be held at Lincoln Center in New York City on April 24. Featuring actress, model and activist Yara Shahidi; “A Handmaid’s Tale” author Margaret Atwood; and a powerful handful of other inspiring speakers; including Burch herself.The topics will focus on themes such as Confronting Stereotypes and Creating New Norms. COOKING UP GOOD TIMES WITH KEITH DAVIS OF THE GOLDEN PEAR BY DAWN WATSON

S

tarting with the best ingredients is crucial in making the very tastiest food and drink, but there’s more to it than that, says award-winning restaurateur Keith Davis. There’s also love. Family is just as important to the Golden Pear and Keith’s Nervous Breakdown owner’s success as the food and beverages his businesses offer. That’s why he cherishes his time at home with his wife, Anne, their now grown children—Sarah, Emily and Keith—and their friends and loved ones. “Home is a place of refuge, of love, and sharing with your family and friends,” he says. “It’s essential for a well-rounded, balanced and stable life.” It’s no surprise that the kitchen is the heart of his house. The restaurateur and his wife, Anne, a pastry chef, spend many hours there—pouring over cookbooks, trying out new recipes, whipping up hors d’oeuvres for their frequent golf or football viewing parties, or exploring novel adult beverage mixers. “We prepare all kinds of delicious food and cocktails for gustatory pleasure,” he says, adding that he and his wife make the most of what they’ve got at their home in Hampton Bays. “We don’t have a large

kitchen, but it’s a special place for us where we love to cook great meals.” Though he’s no slouch in the kitchen, Keith credits his spouse, whom he met 30 years ago when she came in to apply for the job of pastry chef at his flagship Southampton Village Golden Pear, as the master of that particular domain. An “amazing cook who always sources the best of everything,” her passion for preparing great food still wows him, he says. The two enjoy cooking together, and their talents are complementary. For example, Keith says he makes a mean meat sauce and Anne’s meatballs are out of this world. And though they love to experiment, the culinary pair are devotees of the basics, he adds. His favorites come from the seminal “Culinary Institute of America Cookbook,” as well as CIA’s textbooks on “Grilling” and “Breakfast & Brunches.” Hers from “all of Ina’s [referring to East Hampton’s own Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten] cookbooks, and ‘The Joy of Cooking,’ which every kitchen should have,” he reports. Having the right tools in the kitchen is also important, Keith says. His staples include a white Le Creuset Dutch oven and a good black cast-iron pan.

“You can cook pretty much anything in those two things,” he says. Cook sauces, soups, stews, and “falloff-the-bone chicken,” in the Dutch oven and pull out the cast-iron skillet for searing in the juices and flavor for bacon, sausages, burgers, and steak au poivre. “And don’t forget to season,” he charges, adding that home cooks needn’t fear healthy doses of salt, pepper and fresh herbs where needed. Of course every good meal should have an equally delicious beverage, he says. Which is why Keith and Anne derive just as much pleasure concocting craft cocktails as they do cooking up tasty treats for friends and family. Fresh juices, premium spirits, and unique flavors and essences can create delicious impact. And they turn any gathering up a notch or two, according to Keith. “Hospitality is a state of mind,” he says. “It’s filled with great food and drink, family, friends and fun. That’s exactly the kind of place I want my home to be.”

CARL FISHER’S MAGNIFICENT HOME IS ON THE MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE ‘50S BY ALISON DANIELS

P

erched atop one of the highest elevations smack dab in the middle of Montauk sits a rambling mansion built in the Roaring Twenties by developer extraordinaire, Carl Fisher, for his own use. Fisher was made famous by his dream to transform the tiny fishing village of Montauk into Miami Beach North. In 1925 he paid $2.5 million (about $315 million today) for 10,000 acres and proceeded to pop up buildings around the sea colony at the rate of the jitterbug. While most of his structures were Tudor in style – from Montauk Manor to the Montauk Community Church (both of which are still extant) – his own home, with its columned portico, resembles a Southern plantation home.

“The two-story entrance with its grand stairway is right out of Gone with the Wind.” While it sports splendid views of Lake Montauk (and of the ocean from a third-floor maid’s room), it is also

visible from far below. In fact, that is precisely how its next owner found it. An avid angler, Bobby Akin was on a boat when he spotted the hilltop mansion. He asked the ship’s captain who the “majestic” abode belonged to and discovered it was Fisher’s widow. He purchased the 8,000 square-foot edifice in 1956. It is now belongs to his grandchildren.

The 7.6 acre lot seems even bigger, especially since much of the surrounding land is owned by both the town and county and is thus unbuildable. There is no pool or much of anything outdoors except nature in all its glory. But, of course, there is more than enough room to go crazy with outdoor amenities. Let’s not forget the guest house with its five ensuite bedrooms.

But what is most notable about the house is that it is totally swathed in wood paneling including its coffered ceilings. And the paneling goes everywhere on the first two floors including the bedrooms. Alas, it is that very un-chic brown-orange color that weathered panels tend to get, but would be stunning if stripped down to a light tone.

The ask is $9.5 million, $1 million less than when the property was last on the market in 2015, but at that time it did not include the three buildable parcels offered currently, two adjacent to the property and one close by.

There are fireplaces galore made from local stone and the bedrooms, which seem to go on and on (there are six ensuite), are on the large side. Besides being a great place to play hide ‘n’ seek, the house with its grand parlor floor rooms is a natural for entertaining. And we’re talking BIG parties.

ARTIST LIANNE ALCON PUTS HER EMOTIONS ON HER CANVASES BY SOPHIE OVERTON

rtist Lianne Alcon’s works are mostly vibrant portrayals of women. Born in Spain, she was brought to the States by her mother after her divorce from Lianne’s father. The pair moved to Miami to join her grandmother, an accountant who owned her own business. Lianne’s mother went to school for veterinarian medicine, but ended up with a PhD in microbiology.

It is growing up in this “female-dominated household of strong women” that has inspired the artist’s work. Her pieces, she says, encompass her view of women: “soft and sexy and at the same time strong and powerful.” She and her mother moved to a rural college town

in Mississippi for a short spell during high school, long enough for Lianne to fall in love with her first boyfriend. Then it was back to the urban sprawl of Miami with the bright colors and Art Deco architecture she so admires. Alcon uses bright colors in her paintings, such as the orange dress with black polka dots on her image of a sevillana (flamenco dancer). “Spanish dancers remind me of home,” she says. “They are sexy and curvy and powerful and feminine.” She paints them mostly from memory, stealing a glance at a photograph for a sense of anatomy.

She thinks of her work as both Impressionistic and Expressionistic – “de Kooning meets Van Gogh.” And she has a point. “de Kooning expressed more about what he felt while painting, rather than the Impressionists who created impressions of what they were looking at. My brush strokes and the looseness of my figures are more Expressionistic. My colors and retaining something of the figure are more like the Impressionists.”

“Bright colors make me feel good,” she says. “A lot of time when I’m painting I’m purging emotions. It’s a way to express feelings whether it’s happiness or frustration, a way of getting it out.” Blue, her favorite color, dominates her oeuvre, with punches of warm reds and oranges used as foils for the coldness of blue and to make the pieces “pop.”

Her paintings are alive with swirling strokes and the visual imprint of her brushes. Lately, she has steered away from her usual oils and acrylics to embrace ink. These nudes are given a dramatic edge by her allowing the ink to drip liberally over the image. “I’ve been drawing since I was able to hold a crayon, she says. “It feeds the soul.”

“I’m very influenced by Van Gogh and Gaugin, who both tended to use pure colors and bold images.”

Her work has mostly been shown in the Hamptons at such galleries as The White Room Gallery, Romany Kramoris Gallery and Ashawagh Hall. Her paintings have found homes with private collectors in Florida, New York, New Jersey and Spain.

She was married “very young,” at 18, so she moved briefly to Ohio where her husband’s family lived and attended Ohio University. After a divorce, she transferred to Shawnee State University where the “art program was better.” She studied fine art with a concentration in digital art. Today her day job is as a graphic artist at Sotheby’s International Realty

1770 HOUSE CHEF MICHAEL ROZZI IS MAKING HISTORY IN THE HISTORIC VENUE BY ALLY HENDERSON

E

ntering the pretty white colonial façade of the 1770 House Restaurant & Inn you are immediately struck by its aura of history – from the antique furnishings to the wood-paneled parlor where there’s always a fire burning in the hearth. While the structure itself dates to a private home in 1663, it became an inn a century later and has remained so since.

“Upstairs is where chef Michael Rozzi showcases his culinary genius in complex world-class dishes.” Currently owned by high-end builder Ben Krupinski, the establishment contains two eateries: the casual Tavern downstairs and the more formal dining room on the parlor floor. The tavern, always packed with patrons, is made warm and cozy by its exposed brickwork and original beehive oven. The candle-lit dining room with its original ceiling beams, oak tables and Oriental rugs is also invitingly warm. Its vintage-style feels as if it was decorated by

your grandmother with flawless taste. The Tavern serves such casual fare as an amazing burger, fish & chips and shepherd’s pie. It is famous for its meatloaf served with mashed potatoes, spinach and a roasted garlic sauce. The upstairs venue is where chef Michael Rozzi showcases his culinary genius in complex world-class dishes. He is adept at layering ingredients for both visual and gastronomic impact. We are not alone in our assessment. Open Table voted the establishment as one of the Top 100 restaurants in the USA in December. And notable foodies who dine there include Ina Garten, Bobby Flay, Florence Fabricant, Alex Guarnaschelli, Giada De Laurentiis and Katie Lee. Did we mention that Jimmy Fallon sat at a nearby table during our visit? Take the chef ’s signature dish: Spicy Fluke Tartar. As pretty as a picture in its presentation. The delicate flakes of fish, sourced from local waters, are laced with subtle heat by wasabi and radish and given a

welcome crunch from the accompanying hijiki (seaweed) salad. Its crown of tobiko (flying fish roe) imbues a note of elegance. A glass of classically clean bubbly (NV Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve) marries with it beautifully.

“Notable foodies who dine there include Ina Garten, Bobby Flay, Florence Fabricant, Alex Guarnaschelli, Giada De Laurentiis and Katie Lee.” (It should be noted that sommelier Michael Cohen was on hand at a recent dinner and his wine pairings were brilliant. Alas, there is not enough room to mention them all here.) The Atlantic Cod with Green Curry where paprika oil flirts with heat while a layer of tasty black “forbidden rice” and julienned snow peas add that familiar note of crunch takes a similar approach. As does the Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras, a sumptuous dish served in an iron skillet. A sauternes from Château Suduiraut adds the right note of sensuality while a second wine served with the course, a pinot gris from Alsace, brings the palate back to reality. We highly recommend the Heritage Pork Ragu, an intensely flavorful sauce served over house-made cavatelli, small rustic pasta shells with little hollows that contain the sauce nicely.
