“I

would say my decorating style is influenced by the gracious country houses found in Locust Valley, on the North Shore of Long Island where I was raised,” shares Tom Samet. Unafraid of color, pattern, and texture, Tom creates spaces that are not only beautifully layered, but are also livable and practical for families with children and pets and are easy to entertain in. Widely known as one of the most coveted decorators on the East End for decades, Tom currently lives and works with his partner Nathan Wold at their design firm, Hamptons House Design, in East Hampton.

KDHamptons: Tell us about your recent East Hampton Renovation? Tom & Nathan: The property includes a barn-style cottage with a smaller Cape Cod style guest cottage off of Main Street in Amagansett. The exteriors of the cottages include traditional Hamptons design elements like Cedar shingle siding and bluestone terraces.The interiors of the cottages are also traditional in design, but are updated and uncluttered for easy family living. The main cottage includes all of the amenities of a larger home, including a lower level media and game room with generous storage, outdoor covered living area with a fireplace, and a master suite with a marble shower, large soaking tub, walk-in closet, and a south-facing decked balcony. The small cottage easily accommodates five guests and has a dining area that seats at least eight. Both cottages have generous ceiling heights in the main living and dining areas which make the spaces feel larger than they actually are.

KD: What would you say is the current trend in Hamptons design? Tom & Nathan: We are currently most often asked

The trend of open concept floor plans has us designing what we call “the one room you’ll ever need.” This includes an open kitchen with counter-top seating for casual dining, a dining area with an expandable dining table for a large group, a seating area around a fireplace and TV that is comfortable for 2 - 10 people, and a cozy nook to settle down with a book or catch up on some emails at. We also like to include a few chairs that can easily be pulled into the mix.

KD: What are three items or design elements every Hamptons home should have? KD: What does your personal Hamptons home decor look like? Tom & Nathan: Our home is designed with comfort and entertaining in mind. We like to use a neutral color palette, but incorporate lots of texture like sisal rugs, decorative painted walls in a strié style, burlap draperies trimmed with classic Greek key tape, and our favorite wall covering from Nobilis, which is a perfect imitation of solid wood and even has a slight relief to it. We put together furniture in multiple seating areas and add chairs that can be easily moved. Colors are introduced through interesting pillows, lampshades, accessories, and art.

Lighting designer Caitlin Faron doesn’t deal in quick fixes. Working in collaboration with residential architects, she creates lighting schemes for new construction and major renovation projects that are carefully considered things of beauty. But when a friend with a small cottage in East Hampton appealed to Faron for help with her randomly-lit open kitchen and sitting room, the designer, whose current projects include a 12,000 square-foot modern residence and an Italianate villa, made a flying visit to the house and took a look around. Relying on the strategic selection and placement of decorative fixtures, Faron conceived of a modest redo that would leave the ceilings intact and the space aglow with layers of light. Below are her moderate to high-end picks. (For budget options, she likes Schoolhouse Electric, Dutton Brown, Walden Wood Designs, and Phototonic Studios in addition to such larger retailers as West Elm.) eal estate listings often tout a property’s ability to bring the outside in—but for homeowners, bringing the inside out is becoming just as popular. In the Hamptons, outdoor living is a key trend; high-end backyards are being outfitted with outdoor TVs, kitchens boasting every appliance, and the latest technology to control it all, matching and sometimes surpassing the features indoors. For the latest in chic backyards, we turned to Bill D’Agata of Pembrooke Fine Landscapes, a luxury builder in Southampton. Bill says, “Teardown homes have been common in the Hamptons for years: we are now seeing a trend toward the ‘tear down yard.’ Homeowners are looking for complete renovation and reconstruction of their outdoor space/landscape. They’re ripping out dated landscapes—pools, patios and decks—and replacing with new amenities such as outdoor kitchens, pavilions, outdoor showers, outdoor fireplaces, pergolas, luxury gunite pools/spas and patios. The goal is to create an aesthetically beautiful functional outdoor space.”

Bill says that technology driven design and integration are huge, especially in the realm of automation. “We are in the process of installing three outdoor televisions inside one pavilion. Two appear over the

fully functioning outdoor kitchen, the other above a custom fireplace. Audio/visual is big; every job seems to be expanding on that. Automation permits homeowners to control so many features, from pool and spa lights, spa jets, outdoor lighting, sound system, outdoor wireless.We’re recommending a system called Savant that allows all to be integrated via one app.” Inside, everyone gathers around the kitchen island, don’t they? One thing Bill noticed was that many outdoor kitchens lack that seating space. “We have been creating more outdoor kitchen islands featuring large custom polished and honed granite counter tops, with stools that brings family and friends together. Our outdoor kitchens are larger and more functional than most indoor kitchens, with full refrigerators, icemakers, decked out grills, farm sinks, attractive and functional venting, canopy lighting, wine refrigerators, dishwashers, and cabinetry providing a warmer, more indoor feel. There are some great treatments for wood out there that look weathered but withstand the outdoors.” As far as style goes, Bill says he likes to go a bit traditional with contemporary flair, much like the latest trends in indoor architecture. “We are asked to match, and in most cases surpass, what exists in the main house. The homeowner asks us for every convenience that would


SPOTLIGHT make the outdoor space a fully functional destination.” Of course, the crowning glory of any backyard is the pool. Greg Darvin, owner of high-end East Hampton builder Pristine Pools, says that East Enders like a traditional pool. He says,“The rectangle is still the most popular and functional shape. Within the rectangle we can provide space for lounging and hanging out, while still offering a lap lane or area for water aerobics. The symmetry of the rectangle is congruent with most architecture and construction.” Do homeowners really swim laps in their pools? “People often want an area for laps included in their designs, but then usually admit they don’t know if they will actually use it—but feel better about the potential if it is there. People who do really use their pool for exercise tend to appreciate and value their investment much more.”

What about that new kind of spa sometimes seen, where the spa itself is submerged into the actual pool? Does Greg recommend this style? “Although we have installed the ‘floating’ spas, this is a detail I typically try to discourage. I understand the aesthetic advantage, but I believe the functional disadvantage far outweighs it. A spa and pool built in this manner will make it virtually impossible to regulate the temperature of either because the water is mixing between the two bodies of water. The result could be a pool which is too warm and a spa which is too cold. I feel it is my responsibility to be the voice of reason in this scenario, but at the end of the day, once the client understands their choice we are happy to accommodate.” Seems like saltwater pools are becoming ubiquitous. Why is that? Greg says, “Most new pools are including a saline water treatment system. It is the most cost effective and manageable way to get away from

traditional chlorine water treatment.” As far as new materials and advances in technology, Greg explains that automation of systems and better energy efficiency are key. “Automation and communication technology make the swimming pool an obvious extension of everything else going on in the field of technology. Easy ways to control their pool’s functioning makes people feel empowered. Often, we can make repairs or clear up issues from our office rather than on site. “As far as energy goes, a swimming pool by nature is not an efficient amenity. When discussing this with my clients I always equate it to trying to heat your house in the dead of winter with every window and door wide opened. Given this, any appliance or fixture that can offer a higher level of efficiency benefits your wallet as well as the planet.”

FINDING TRANQUILITY

W

e live in a fast-paced world and sometimes we just need to slow down. You can’t always take a vacation, but you can take a break, right where you live. Moments of peace and serenity can be as close as your back door. Here are some ways to create your own peaceful haven in your own backyard. First, create a quiet, private spot somewhere in your landscape. Install an arbor and plant wisteria or grapevines or trumpetvine to cover it. Set a couple of lounge chairs underneath. Place a bench in a quiet corner and plant hydrangeas on either side and butterfly bushes behind it. Make a tropical miniparadise with large pots of palms, banana plants, canna lilies and elephant ears to screen a small patio or a gazebo. Second, choose colors for your garden that are soft and cool. Blue is calming, the color of the sea and the sky; it creates a peaceful feeling when we gaze at it. It is. Blue flowers and foliage can promote a feeling of serenity, especially planted around a small pool or fountain. Green is the most restful color to the human eye, because the lens does not need to refocus in order to perceive it. A garden of different shades of green foliage can be soothing, too. Or, if you prefer

BY ANNE HALPIN warmer colors, plant drifts of flowers in soft pink or peach instead of bright red and hot orange. Particular scents also have been found to produce emotional, psychological and in turn, physiological effects in people. This research became the basis for aromatherapy. Lavender, for example, promotes relaxation, as do jasmine and bergamot (or beebalm). And who could deny the therapeutic effect of wandering through a garden full of deliciously fragrant roses? All these plants can inhabit your serenity garden here on the east end, if only for a summer season. Ornamental grasses work a special magic in the landscape as they sway and rustle in each passing breeze. That gentle motion can be hypnotically soothing if you let your eyes just follow it, and the soft rustling sounds are relaxing. Grasses are easy to grow, and as a bonus, deer don’t generally like to eat them. Other sounds can also soothe the spirit: hang some wind chimes or bells in your garden. And encourage birds to visit by installing a birdbath and a feeder or two, then keep them filled. The songs of birds in spring and summer are a joy to hear. Water brings its own particular charms to the garden. Water that moves is musical – trickling, splashing, bubbling gently – its cheerful sounds are pure delight.

Moving water can be as quiet as a gentle trickle from a simple bamboo waterspout or as lively as a fountain dancing skyward in the center of a patio garden. Its sound will distract from neighborhood racket. Still water provides a visual balm. The surface of a small pool, or even a birdbath, draws our eye as it reflects the sky and trees above.A passing breeze ripples the surface and the image dissolves, only to reform.Water can be mesmerizing, a still point of serenity that drains away stress, even if just for a moment or two. French Twist Sagg General Store has a new owner. Pierre Weber of Bridgehampton’s Pierre’s Restaurant will rename the old standby, which has been a general store since 1878, “Pierre’s” and will keep it open seven days a week year-round. While it will remain a general store, the pastry chef will be offering such Frenchified fare as quiches and croissants. He plans to gut the interior but will keep the Sagaponack building’s history in mind.

Lowered Expectations As news outlets proclaim new price adjustments of the high-end Hamptons market, two financiers have lowered the price of their homes. Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein has slashed the asking price of his Parsonage Lane by $4m from $17m to $13m. The 7 bedroom house is one of two local houses owned by Blankfein and his wife, Laura. The couple purchased the other larger Bridgehampton property in 2012 for $32.5m. Real estate tycoon Jeff Blau has also shaved the price of his Bridgehampton manse from $32m to $27m. High Spirits After years of waiting, Sagaponack farmer Dean Foster has gotten approval to convert a barn on his Sagg Road property into a wholesale vodka distillery. aybe it’s all those negative ions blasting off the Atlantic. Or maybe it’s all the stressed out New Yorkers. There seem to be countless healers who have hung their shingles on the South Fork. We visited a few complementary practitioners plying various forms of healing.

Fancy Footwork What can be better than having your feet rubbed with St. John’s Wort oil? Okay, so there are occasional twinges of discomfort as a thumb or finger hits a “sensitive” spot. My feet are talking to Elizabeth Willoughby, a reflexologist with offices in Montauk, Sag Harbor, and Manhattan. They’re telling her where imbalances lie so that she can correct them with pressure. It’s a dance between ecstasy and … Ouch! She locates several imbalances in my body: most notably my inner ear (I did have a scary bout of vertigo the day before) and my neck and shoulders. Well, I am a writer who spends many an hour hunched over a keyboard. Believe it or not, she tells me, reflexology is actually a western application of Chinese acupuncture and Egyptian massage, which was developed by an American ear, nose, and throat doctor at the turn of the last century. Dr. William Fitzgerald used

His work was further developed in the 1930s by another American, physical therapist Eunice Ingham, who worked with points in the feet. Like most reflexologists, Willoughby works with the feet, hands, and ears to harness the “eastern principle of increasing energetic flow in the body.” Reflexology is also known to “increase blood circulation, enhance nerve function, lymphatic circulation and drainage, reduce toxins, and enliven organ function.” Following in the footsteps of its originator, practitioners today still use it for pain management. Willoughby started a program in 2003 at New York’s Hospital of Joint Diseases for women with disabilities – many of whom found pain relief. Some also experienced increased function.Willoughby sees clients suffering from migraines, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, and muscular-skeletal tension.“It’s not a substitute for western medicine,” she stresses. “It’s a complementary medicine. We’re not saying alternative anymore.” Willoughby started out as a modern dancer before becoming a window dresser at Macy’s. She’s been practicing reflexology for almost 30 years. She once

worked on a client who jumped three inches off her table when her gall bladder point was touched. “It was like an electric shock.” Willoughby advised her to see a doctor. The next day the client had her gall bladder removed. Willoughby is currently working with a cancer patient in Montauk who is filming her struggle to overcome the disease through complementary treatments. “Reflexology also is a great way to relieve stress and induce a deep state of relaxation,” she says.Amen to that. The Whole Being Suzanne Kirby and her husband Glenn Goodman are legends in Hamptons healing circles. I’d been hearing about them for years and finally found time to visit their practice, Sag Harbor Integrative Medicine Associates (SHIMA). While I’d somehow expected Kirby to be an earth mother replete with flowers in her hair, instead I found a chicly tailored fashion plate. So much for preconceived notions. Both spouses practice integrative/functional medicine using various modalities including chiropractics, acupuncture, homeopathy, botanical medicine, and nutrition. Goodman also teaches his clients yoga and

Kirby “looks at the whole being” before deciding on an individualized course of treatment. Her practice is filled with patients seeking help for such conditions as back pain, Lyme disease, digestive disorders (think: leaky gut), and allergies from dairy to seasonal. Blood and saliva tests, as well as kinesiology (muscle testing) are key elements in her diagnoses. Good Vibrations Adriana Barone spent the first part of her life as a graphic designer, a career that encompassed being an art director for such publications as High Times and National Lampoon. In the early ‘90s, as she found herself “in recovery,” she felt an “inner drive” to follow a path into the healing arts.The urge was so strong that it felt to her as if “someone had a hand on my back pushing me into this field.” It was a field about which she knew nothing. That was about to change. Barone has spent more time than many medical doctors studying a bevy of modalities that have led her practice to where it is today. She spent three and a half years in Arizona studying with Robert Jaffe, MD, whose School of Energy Mastery taught her that energy contains intelligence. She went on in search of a “deeper spiritual training,” which she found with The Divine Unity, which taught her how to be connected to a higher power. She started her energy healing practice in Sag Harbor in 1994, but still continued her studies. “When people came to my table I didn’t feel I was getting to know them,” she says. “I wanted more interaction.” Experiential Therapy, a method that incorporates psycho-drama among other elements, offered her a way to help her clients “break out of patterns.” It allowed her to “access a more conscious side of the person where the self has an understanding of patterns.” Cranio-sacral work, which she also studied,

brings her work “into the body.” But much of her work is done on another plane. Her four years spent studying with energy healing guru Barbara Brennan took her from mastering the fundamentals of “grounding” to reaching a “spiritual opening to divine energy.” She cherishes the time spent there with “800 other students, all pursuing a journey of self-discovery.” For my session, Barone asks me a few pointed questions and within moments I’m crying, not something I do often. Seems we’ve started to chisel away at a block. I lay on her table whereupon she asks me to access my higher powers. I am visited by diaphanous beings that swirl about me, taking my hand, flying me off somewhere. It’s all very nice until such ethereal visions are replaced by the drivel of my monkey mind: What will I have for lunch? What will I write in this article? I’m aware as the warmth of her hands hover over various parts of my body. It’s especially comforting when she cradles my head in her hands and asks me to feel the heaviness of my brain. She later explains to me what she was experiencing from her perspective as she accessed my “energy fields” and bypassed my “personality field.” “It gets more vibrational, I could feel a lot of divine love, a lot of god presence. Very loving energy came for you, very deep.” She tells me that she balanced the mother/father sides of my body. I tell her about the trauma I experienced with my parents. “We carry the energy of our parents,” she says. “It takes some time to shift.” She asks me what gift I would give my younger self.
