as anyone else noticed how the Hamptons are everywhere right now? Thanks to streaming, and the unquenchable thirst people seem to have for watching how the other half lives, it seems like a flood of television shows have invented a reason to stop by, or at least mention, our always fabulous neck of the woods. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ETC. To wit, the Apple TV+ hit The Morning Show — whose theme song was created by Amagansett’s Carter Burwell, by the way — recently aired an episode set at a stark modern oceanfront beach house seemingly in East Hampton. The splashy and super expensive “West End stunner,” owned by Billy Crudup’s character was the setting for his fictional network’s “upfronts” party, which was attended by the characters of Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Julianna Margulies and Jon Hamm. Interestingly titled The Green Light, we loved the numerous nods to The Great Gatsby. Catching up, Hulu’s Fleishman is in Trouble — starring Lizzy Caplan, Clare Danes and Jesse Eisenberg — made a notably disastrous short stop in what looks to be Southampton. And maybe not so recent but certainly notable, there was the limited series, The Shrink Next Door, on Apple TV+ starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. You might have missed it, but there was even a romantic comedy television movie on Roku called The Wedding in the Hamptons earlier this year. Of course, it’s impossible to mention the Hamptons and television without giving a shoutout to Showtime’s Billions and HBO’s
FOR MATURE AUDIENCES Not for everyone, but we are certainly there for Dicks: The Musical, starring East Hampton’s Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally. The saucy and scandalous film, which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in September, is probably best described as a decidedly adult version of The Parent Trap. The Supermodels
Succession, which both have prominently featured the East End on multiple occasions. And, lest we forget, there’s an ever-present reality show brigade filmed here, including Forever Summer Hamptons, Summer House, Selling the Hamptons, Serving the Hamptons, The Real Housewives of New York, and many others that come to visit for that franchise. On the horizon, we can expect a show by Amagansett’s Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy that’s simply titled Hamptons — which looks to be stuck in some form of development at the moment; Carl Weber’s The Black Hamptons returns for season two on BET in November; and the television movie Holiday in the Hamptons, starring Eric Roberts, comes out this December on a yet-to-be-announced network.
FINS & SCENES We’ve got good news for Parrot Heads. The late Jimmy Buffett’s final album, Equal Strain on All Parts, is now available. Featuring a full track list, the sure-to-be-a-hit effort also features Amagansett’s Paul McCartney on bass, plus collaborations with Preservation Jazz Hall Band, Angelique Kidjo, Lennie Gallant, Will Kimbrough and Emmylou Harris. Can’t wait to hear it! And finally, kudos and well wishes to Montauk’s Julianne Moore, who is already aswirl in Oscar buzz for her role in May December. Also starring Natalie Portman and directed by Todd Haynes, the feature film is very loosely based on the true story of convicted pedophile Mary Kay Letourneau. Interesting.

espite the doom and gloom filling the headlines about Hamptons real estate this autumn, mostly caused by lack of inventory, there are, as always, several bright spots and some big sales. NEW, MODERN MONTAUK Last year, Montauk saw a record price for nonwaterfront construction, with 14 Maple Street selling for $14 million. Now, listed by Douglas
Elliman’s Eklund Gomes Team are the Maple Villas — two more luxurious new houses offering unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean. These modern masterpieces are developed by Italian race car driver Alessandro Zampedri, who has embarked on a second career as a real estate developer in Montauk.

Asking $18.5M and $19.5M, each sits on nearly an acre with ocean views; they are nearing completion this fall. BACKPEDALING ON FURTHER LANE Peloton co-founder John Foley sold his Further Lane, Amagansett, oceanfront house for $4 million less than he paid for it in 2021. Not too surprising given that Peloton stock plummeted after Covid-related lockdowns eased, and Foley was rumored to be interested in offloading the property just two months after his purchase. The property, set on about four acres with 400 linear feet of oceanfront, traded for $51 million in May. Foley paid $55 million for it in December 2021. COMPOUND INTEREST Another big recent sale was the transfer of an oceanfront house in Southampton’s McDonnellMurray Compound. On 2.64 acres, with 191 feet of ocean frontage, the house was built in 1992 and traded for $41 million. Bespoke Real Estate represented both the buyers and the sellers. The dwelling includes almost 8,000 square feet, with six bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms. Outside, there’s a gunite swimming pool, a clay tennis court and a private duckwalk to the beach. The property was previously owned by apparel magnate Irving L. Rousso, a founder and president of Russ Togs, who died in 2017. SAGAPONACK IN SOUTHAMPTON Much less new is an early 20th century farmhouse in Southampton Village. The plot of land is deceiving, as the just over half an acre property is much deeper than it is wide. According to listing agent Pat Garrity, of Corcoran, the property is almost more like Sagaponack, with enormous plots and gardens, than it is the sedate village. But wander through the back gardens and you’re in another world, with gorgeous plantings and beautiful old trees. Asking $3.895 million, the property has been owned for more than 50 years by artist Paul Waldman and his wife Diane Waldman, a director and curator at the Guggenheim. The Waldmans purchased the place with the legendary Roy Lichtenstein, who a few years later decided that he wanted his own house in Southampton, so the Waldmans bought him out.

Back in the days before anyone kicked up much of a fuss about zoning, Waldman and Lichtenstein added a large artist’s studio to the property and connected it and an old guest cottage to the main house. Today, the former guest house is a garden room, but it could be converted into a standalone home office. WHITE GEM Up on Hedges Banks in the Northwest Woods of East Hampton, there’s a small enclave of bluff front homes that belong to or formerly belonged to marquee names, including Donna Karan, Hugh Jackman, and of course, Sean “Diddy” Combs. Back in the day, Diddy’s white parties were
legendary, attracting thousands of revelers and big celebrity names. All white inside and out, the house was quietly unloaded by Combs in 2020 for $4.7 million. It sold to finance guy Chad Let in 2022 for $5.5 million. Now, the property, overlooking Gardiner’s Bay, is asking $5.995 million via Laura U. White of Saunders & Associates. The modern house offers 4,500 square feet, with four bedrooms and five and one half bathrooms, is set on 0.92 of an acre. An open floorplan, doubleheigh ceilings, and contemporary touches give the abode the feeling of a resort. Of course, there is a gorgeous (white) pool overlooking the bay.

veryone knows the best party is always in the kitchen. This has never been truer than it is with today’s expansive open kitchens and supersize islands. “The kitchen has become another room that is a really beautiful focal point,” says Jeannine Price of the luxury bath and kitchen brand Waterworks, New York City. “Modern kitchens are much more complex than in those days of the original work triangle of storage, prep, and cooking,” says Robert Bakes, co-founder and head of design at Bakes & Kropp Fine Cabinetry, with locations in New York City, the Hamptons and Palm Beach. “Now, more than ever the kitchen is an extension of the living space and will need to perform many different functions from use and function to a congregation and relaxation area.”
COUNTERTOPS AND CLUTTER Top designs include large islands, according to the NKBA. “For islands, size and inclusion are primarily driven by the overall kitchen footprint,” says Bakes. “The island forms a valuable transition point between the various functions of a modern kitchen.” Islands are topped with marble, natural stone, granite, quartz or quartzite. To eliminate clutter, many small appliances such as a microwave or a coffee station are hidden away, perhaps built into a drawer. CLOSED PANTRY A hidden pantry the size of a walk-in closet is very popular, according to Price. “You open
a door and go into it, as you would a closet,” she says, noting that “there are also a lot of wet bars where you walk through between the kitchen and the den. These might have a wine cooler and a built-in coffee station.” FIXTURES AND HARDWARE. “Hardware is the jewelry that can add personality so it’s a way for a client to project a subtle message,” says Bakes. “Generally speaking, hardware and faucets should match though other fittings such as lights and additional metal accents can contrast.” Price believes that “People should spend some money on faucets as they are the most used item. People are choosing brass and gold and some gun metal and nickel
CABINETS “A combination of painted and stained wood cabinetry is very relevant today, not so much the all-white kitchen but white with a twist,” says Bakes, ”Our palette speaks to an enduring market with white, greys, soft cerused walnut and oaks.” The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) trends research notes that “whites will be a popular neutral with natureinspired greens and blues for warmth and inspiration.” In addition, designers will use bold colors for backsplashes, artwork, accent furniture, paint, and wallpaper. Alex Yacavone, Kohler Design Studio Manager, lists bolder colors as one of the top five design trends.

SUSTAINABILITY NKBA reports that sustainability is important to many homeowners. The top three concerns are LED lighting, separate storage for recycling, and increased natural light. Bakes agrees that “sustainability is becoming ever more critical to the industry and to our clients. High-quality custom cabinetry is a naturally green choice. We try to take conscious steps in production that make for greener outcomes by educating clients on wood choices that might be more environmentally friendly in the long run.” Kohler’s Yacavone also lists the desire for sustainable materials as a top trend. TECHNOLOGY The NKBA says homeowners are most excited about smart controls via mobile devices or voice control, touchless faucets, integrated lighting,
smart appliances, dedicated areas for charging devices. “There was a movement toward desks in the kitchen a few years ago,” says Bakes, “but it is not so relevant now. For most, kitchen desks became an inefficient use of space where clutter took precedence. We find clients are turning toward other alternatives, such as adding more seating for entertaining, integrating a landing zone with charging docks and organizers or freestanding pantries to name a few.” Price notes that an island could have a drawer with outlets for a computer and phone rather than a traditional desk.

P “The location of our house is nothing short of a dream come true,” shares Scott.
erched on the highest point in all of East Hampton overlooking Gardiner’s Bay sits the stunning new dream home of designer Scott Sanders and his husband Peter Wilson, along with their sweet dachshund Bailey. A sandy private beach can be reached by a 93step stairway leading down for early morning swims. “Nestled in serene solitude, our only neighbor is the vast expanse of the sea. It’s a location that brings us unparalleled peace, making every moment spent here a cherished treasure,” shares Sanders. “It’s a testament to the power of design to capture the essence of who we are and what we hold dear.” Sanders founded his full-service design firm in 2000, specializing in bespoke residential interiors and a distinguished portfolio including homes in: New York, Florida, New Jersey, Colorado, Arizona, California and the Caribbean, and three iconic hotels. Scott is also the author of two beautiful books, The Insider Guide to the Lord Baltimore Hotel and Baltimore, Too and Picture Perfect: Designing the New American Family Home. HRES and Sanders share an insider tour of his idyllic property, below. HRES: The architecture and landscaping at your property is picture perfect, whom did you work with? SCOTT SANDERS: Barlis Wedlick, the visionary architect, and Craig Socia, the landscape designer have woven their magic into the fabric of our home. Having had the pleasure of working with them on previous homes, it’s a partnership I hold in high regard. Their work speaks of precision, artistry, and a deep understanding of the spaces they create. Along with Trunzo Builders, they’ve transformed my husband’s and my visions into tangible expressions of beauty and functionality. HRES: Tell us about the dramatic grass pathway leading from the house to the beach? SCOTT: The grass path is a testament to the beauty of thoughtful landscaping. Originally, we envisioned it as a sandy path to the Bluff, but our landscaper’s inspired suggestion to opt for a lush grass pathway instead was the direction we went with. This unique pathway not only connects

The rhythmic swaying of the grasses in the breeze creates a serene journey along the way. HRES: Is there one room which really embodies your design philosophy? SCOTT: Yes, the living room embodies my personal philosophy, one that I love to share with my clients. A harmonious blend of elegance and approachability, striking that perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. Every detail in the room is a deliberate choice. It’s a space where classic meets contemporary, and vintage pieces intertwine seamlessly with modern elements. HRES: Which space holds the most personal attachment for you? SCOTT: My screened-in porch is one of my favorite aspects of the house. Growing up in Ohio, my
grandmother had a screened-in porch where we would always congregate. I inherited a lot of her outdoor wicker furniture, which has created a space of nostalgia and comfort for me. The porch isn’t just about furniture, it’s a connection to my roots, a tribute to family, and a tangible piece of the past. It encapsulates the cherished moments of a home that make it special. The view — it’s a simple pleasure, but one that never ceases to amaze. No matter my mood, when I look out to the view of the ever changing shades of blues of the water and sky, I find serenity. HRES: Please describe how you showcase the eclectic elements in the breakfast room / kitchen? SCOTT: The oversized built-in blue lacquered hutch is a magnificent focal point that not only captures the eye, but also showcases my diverse collection of treasures. From the classic charm of the blue willow to the timeless elegance of blue and white chinoiserie, vintage baskets, and a curated collection of mid-century modern teak pieces, this space shares an appreciation for the unexpected beauty that emerges when different pieces come together in perfect harmony. HRES: Stepping into the pecky cypress-lined den is like entering a world of timeless charm and comfort. Where did you draw inspiration? The bookshelf, adorned with a treasure trove of collections, reveals a rich tapestry of our lives — from my own cherished items to my husband’s, along with family photos that tell stories of shared moments. HRES: Tell us about your entertaining spaces and how they work for you? SCOTT: In the warmer months, my screened-in-porch accommodates up to ten guests comfortably. As the sun begins its descent over the water, the porch transitions seamlessly from cocktail hour to an elegant dinner setting. Summer entertaining took an exhilarating turn when I hosted 50 guests last summer. As I scanned the gathering, I realized that 30 of my guests had vanished from my sight! To my delight, they were reveling on the little deck right at the edge of the Bluff. It was a joy for me in that moment to have my guests soaking in the view that I’ve grown to love so much. And in the future, a bar will certainly be stationed at the deck! In the winter months, my home transforms into a warm and inviting haven for formal entertaining. The living room and dining room seamlessly merge into one, providing seating for up to 12 guests, and making it a focal point for elegant gatherings. I opted to not have a formal dining room and instead positioned the dining table within the same room, to add an air of intimacy. Another option for gathering is by the crackling fire pit outside. Guests can enjoy the crisp winter air and share stories under the starlit sky. Whether inside or out, formal winter entertaining in my home is an experience that embraces the magic of the season.

f you feel like you’ve eaten everything on the East End before, we assure you — there’s plenty out there that you haven’t experienced yet, even at your favorite tried-and-true restaurants. From local fish prepared in a classic French style to a new take on linguine with clams, we’ve searched high and low for the East End’s most interesting dishes. We’ve come up with some of our favorites. Eat them and share our excitement for the diverse and ever-changing — and ever-evolving — cuisine of eastern Long Island. It’s hard to choose just one interesting dish emerging from Mavericks Montauk, the new and exciting Montauk space with chef Jeremy Blutstein at the helm. As ever, the hometown hero chef focuses on locally sourced seafood and produce. Some favorites include the Southampton maitake mushroom steak, an umami-forward vegetarian dish amplified with a 20-year Jerez — or Sherry — and thyme; a whole fluke, caught in Montauk and served a la Meunière, a classic preparation that has fallen out of vogue (fish is dusted in flour and sauteed with butter, which, in this case, means beurre noisette, or a brown butter made with capers, parsley, and lemon); and burnt Sagaponack carrots, served with a delicate basil Labneh.

At East Hampton’s Highway Restaurant & Bar, where chef Justin Finney rules the roost, the linguine with little neck clams, cockles, tomatoes, garlic, parsley, and chili is one of the most interesting preparations on the East End. Pliable Korean chicken buns are made with a yuzu mayo and curry pickles, and langoustines, priced per piece, are garnished with burnt lemon and arugula. The Thai chicken stir fry is unexpectedly intriguing, a spicy mix of minced chicken, Thai and fresno chilis, Thai basil, and sticky rice. Don’t miss it. Lulu Kitchen & Bar, in Sag Harbor, offers plenty of expected delights, including one of the most hospitable dining rooms on the East End. But some of the interesting — and less expected — hits are the reason this restaurant continues to impress diners again and again, year after year. The saucisson en brioche, garlic pork sausage served with house-made brioche, a truffle and herb
salad, and a black pepper-red wine sauce, is just one stunning example of this restaurant’s breadth. The two-person serving of rack of lamb, served with harissa yogurt sauce and an Israeli salad, is another. At Lulu, dinner is always something to get excited about. Bridgehampton’s Elaia Estiatorio is known for its superlative and authentic Greek cuisine. And while those familiar with classic Greek dishes will flock to the taramosalata and the saganaki (good choices indeed), it’s worth taking a chance on dishes like the gigantes, large beans that have been baked in a light tomato sauce with onions, carrots, and celery (add a block of feta for just a little extra). For main dishes, the bifteki, a Greekstyle Wagyu beef patty served with herbs, lettuce, onions, feta and tzatziki, and wrapped in pita is one of the best grabs on the East End. It’s a trip to Greece, minus the airfare.
