Welcome to the Holiday/New Year issue of Hamptons Real Estate Showcase. It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us so quickly. This is truly a time to sit back and count all of our blessings, and for being able to live in a place of such great natural beauty as the Hamptons. In our year end Marketwatch report, we check in with some of the leading brokers in the Hamptons to get their take on the state of the market (page 57). 2016 was a year of transition with high-end sales down, rising inventories and decreasing prices. Hot markets like Sag Harbor, Bridgehampton and Montauk performed very well. New construction in the $3-$5 million range also found ready buyers. This past quarter saw an increase in properties going into contract, so the prediction is for a good sales year ahead in 2017. This being our Travel Issue, we take off for some great winter getaway locations… the Grand Mark Hotel in Prague (page 62); Yoga in Tulum, Mexico (page 66) and Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires (page 70). Closer to home, if you’re thinking that most of the good restaurants shut down come winter…think again! In our “Winter Eats” feature we visit three eateries that will surely warm your spirits and satisfy your hunger. Everyman Hotel Developer and restaurateur Jon Krasner, who owns Montauk’s Saltbox and Shagwong Tavern, has purchased Oceanside Resort, a 30-room property also in that hamlet. The off-market deal netted $40M for owner Ken Walles, who had never actually listed the property. “It’s bittersweet,” Walles told the East Hampton Star.“It’s something you don’t want to do, but when you have all this money flying around, how long are you going to hold out?” Krasner plans to upgrade the property, making it into “a hotel for everybody.” The deal’s broker, Jack Botero – principal of real estate investment firm BlackBrick – has observed a new kind of Montauk investor that is fed up with the partying demographic.

Lucky Number Despite filing for bankruptcy in February, music entrepreneur Robert Sillerman has sold yet another property on Southampton’s tony Meadow Lane for circa $38M. It all started when he sold his 3.6 acre parcel at number 1116 for $37.5M. Then last January he sold his 2.4 acre estate at number 1100 for precisely $38M. Fast forward to November when he sold number 1080 for... you guessed it... $38 million. The 4.5 acre parcel features an 8,300 square-foot oceanfront residence and three-hole golf course. Architectural Cred It seems that each year East Hampton’s Bates Masi + Architects receives a bevy of design awards. This year the hosannas amounted to 14. Some of the firm’s projects to merit recognition were Sag Harbor Sanctuary, Amagansett Dunesand Tessa NYC, a Manhattan restaurant. Star Crossed “Stargazer,” the iconic sculpture of a deer head looking skyward that greets motorists en route to the Hamptons in a Manorville farm field, is in dire need of repair after being hit by lightning last year. The red 50-foot piece by artist Linda Scott, who died in 2015, requires a completely new wood frame and plywood “skin” over the existing steel frame and concrete substructure, a fix that will cost about $100,000. Scott’s longtime partner, David Morris, and her son, Morgan Pitts, are leading the renovation project and seeking funds from local businesses. (Hampton Jitney has been a supporter in the past.) If they can raise the capital, they say the welcoming sight could last 50 years. If they can’t, the public legacy won’t last much beyond the 25 years it has reigned.

he 2016 Hamptons real estate market started out slow and steady overall and for some realtors, picked up tremendously this summer. But with high-end sales down, prices decreasing, and inventory rising, it was a buyer’s market. Sag Harbor, Montauk, and Hampton Bays were the hottest markets. As we approach 2017, with lots of pent up demand, predictions are for a good sales year in the Hamptons.

Susan Breitenbach of The Corcoran Group says, “Hamptons real estate for 2016 started a little slow with quite a lot of inventory, but picked up tremendously this summer. Prices were good, inventory was up, and so it was a very good time to buy. I had a very good year – selling $150M in just the last ninety days, including four sales over $20M. Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton were very active as was waterfront and the $1M-$5M market. There was a tremendous amount of new construction spec homes adding to the inventory, making it more of a buyer’s market.” Susan predicts, “Now that the election is over, I think things will settle and spring 2017 will be good for Hamptons real estate.”
Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman Real Estate says, “2016 was not like 2015 in Hamptons real estate, as 2015 was one of the best years since 2006-2007. There is quite a bit of inventory – too much for the market to absorb, with about a 10-25% pricing decrease. It has become a buyer’s market. Homes priced up to $1M are moving briskly. Within the $2M-$3M range, the market is healthy. There is a lot of inventory above $3M. Hampton Bays is the new Brooklyn of the Hamptons and the market is through the roof.” Enzo reflects, “This coming year will be like 2016, maybe a little better. An uncertain market leads people to rent and I anticipate the rental market to be quite healthy this coming summer.”
Judi Desiderio of Town & Country Real Estate says, “2016 started with fits and starts and ended the same way! Certain markets never slowed down, but others seemed to stall with the political process. That said, it’s time to move on and that’s exactly what buyers

Properties with water views, farmfields, and horse farms have been popular. New construction under $4M has remained active.” Cynthia foresees, “Hamptons real estate in 2017 will have a blockbuster year. Interest rates have already begun to rise, although rates are still historically low.The Hamptons and NYC markets are some of the most insulated from extreme market downturns. A safe haven.” Raphael Avigdor of Douglas Elliman Real Estate says, “The Hamptons market this year was bifurcated. The high end suffered some slowness while new construction on the lower end surged with strong demand. We had our strongest year in the Hamptons because we are niched in new construction between $2.5M and $5M. New construction always attracts buyers, as do the Villages of Southampton and Sag Harbor. ‘NORTH IS THE NEW SOUTH’ proved itself worthy this year with numerous wonderful constructions in North Water Mill and Bridgehampton North.” Raphael thinks, “Now that the elections are behind us, despite some continued market trepidation, the gates will open again to activity especially as families and investors try to lock the still very favorable interest rates.”

Westhampton and Shelter Island both had tremendous increases in sales and Sag Harbor and Montauk are still very active. Right now anything under $1.5M and between $3M-$5M is moving. With sales declining and inventory rising weekly, the shift to a buyer’s market is very apparent. New construction is selling, however buyers are looking for quality, features, and something different.” Geoff believes, “The Hamptons will always be a sought after area with global attraction.
With the election behind us and as we head towards the summer of 2017, the market will slowly return.” Rylan Jacka of Sotheby’s International Realty says, “The 2016 Hamptons real estate market was ‘slow and steady,’ without much urgency in buyer temperament. The early 2016 moratorium derailed the Sag Harbor Village market, but it’s a really good time to buy in the Village. Hot areas were Montauk ocean proximity, Amagansett all areas, and East Hampton Village. I am closing out a strong year with sales trending under $10M, especially $2M-$6M. Prices mostly remained flat.We always have room for good inventory. Even in a

PRAGUE PALACE TURNED HOTEL THE GRAND MARK: A GLORIOUS REFUGE IN THE STORYBOOK CITY
D
ating from the Middle Ages, Prague seems to have come to life straight from a fairytale. Known as the “city of a hundred spires,” the silhouettes of castles, palaces and churches are strikingly painted against the sky. There are exquisite architectural specimens from every era from Renaissance to Secessionist. The bustling city is divided into three parts: Old Town (very old), New Town (quite old), and Lesser Town (old). My British expat friend, Stephen Weeks, who has lived in Prague for going on two decades, recommended that I stay at The Grand Mark hotel, literally steps from the gates of Old Town. Besides its ideal location, part of the reason for his recommendation is that Stephen, a brilliant writer and filmmaker, often finds himself there hobnobbing with American movie casts and crews. Prague is a favorite location for Hollywood filmmakers and the impossibly chic hotel is their inn of choice. On my second morning I happened to sit at breakfast next to an exceedingly charming Belgian leading man who is starring with Jessica Chastain, also a guest of the hotel, in The Zookeeper’s Wife, being shot in town. Johan Heldenbergh, both easy to talk to and easy on the eyes (but alas married) was both writer and star of the cult film The Broken Circle Breakdown. The Mark
has also hosted such movie stars as John Travolta and Jennifer Lawrence, both very nice according to staff. Ensconced in a former Baroque palace on a street where the aristocracy once paraded their status with imposing dwellings, the structure seamlessly balances old-world grandeur with modern design and comfort. On the ground floor, beyond the elegant lobby, the Two Steps Bar and Lounge is a testament to glamorous contemporary furnishings juxtaposed against the original vaulted ceiling. It leads through sliding glass doors to the Winter Garden, a glorious courtyard where you can order from the bar and restaurant and relax in the sun when weather permits. “Because it was one of the grandest palaces in Prague, such a large garden is unique in Prague,” says Stephen. The five-star hotel is quintessentially luxurious from its sumptuous bedding (feather mattress top, sleek linens) and draperies to the bathroom’s heated towel rack, rain showerhead, and toiletries from posh English perfumery, Floris. The small gem (only 28 rooms and 47 suites) is one of only two Prague properties listed in The Leading Hotels of the World. Recently taken over by an English company with a strong interest in Central European properties, the place is “unlike many Prague hotels,” says Stephen. “It

has a lot of personality and the scale of the architecture translates into the rooms, which are neither dreadful minimalist nor overstuffed.” The outstanding buffet breakfast includes such exotic (to Americans) items as sour cherry juice (not sour at all), kefir and kombucha (fermented drinks), and whey (the highly nutritious liquid left behind after making butter, cream or cheese). Dinner at Le Grill Restaurant is a mix of modern Bohemian and international cuisines. Think: dense Central European cakelike bread; a smooth chicken liver pate; tomato soup with an edge of roasted peppers; pumpkin ravioli that is more vegetal than the dessert-y American version, and a moist chicken breast flavored with a salami jus. Smack dab in the heart of the city, The Mark is a stone’s throw to the Estates Theater, where Mozart debuted Don Giovanni. Every summer the production is painstakingly reconstructed. Though besieged by swarms of multinational tourists, Old Town is a treasure trove of ancient buildings and stone streets that meander playfully, all leading to the central square with its much-photographed astronomical clock. But it’s not all Hansel and Gretel quaint. Prague is home to numerous important museums, theaters and galleries. And The Mark is a sophisticated venue from which to venture forth.

TRANQUILITY IN TULUM A ESCAPE THE COLD AT THIS CARIBBEAN YOGA RETREAT
fter a series of poses we landed for a few breaths in downward dog as the welcome warmth of the equatorial sun peeked through openings in our thatched-roof yoga palapa. Perched on stilts 30 feet above the beach, we could see the vibrant turquoise of the Caribbean Sea through the palm fronds that fluttered at eye level, the sea breeze caressing us. There were 15 of us on a yoga retreat hosted by the comely Jessica Bellofatto, a legendary yogini with a loyal following at Kama Deva, her East Hampton studio. She also cofounded Sag Harbor’s Yoga Shanti, but that is another story. Jessica is not just beautiful on the outside – think glacial eyes – she also seems to glow from within. And she is down to earth and nurturing. In her entourage are her boyfriend and kids, a willowy fifth grader who does contortions on her paddleboard and a two-year-old girl already braving the surf.
To say I was stressed when I arrived at Amansala, the chic oceanfront hotel playing host to the retreat, is an understatement. The hours-long wait at JFK, trying to sleep in an airport terminal, was bad enough. But a stop by taxi at an ATM to withdraw pesos to tip the driver yielded nothing. It is Mexico, after all. Luckily, the laidback hotel greeter, Mike (originally from Iowa), loaned me ten bucks while also lending me a book on Eastern

philosophy. Was he trying to tell me something?
While mornings were reserved for challenging sessions, evenings were for restorative yoga – the background sound of gentle surf melding with the mellow tones of Jessica’s comforting playlist and such words of wisdom as:
“The mind is a good servant but terrible master.” The all-inclusive meals were held in a multi-level palapa, open to the sea. The casual village feel of the resort reminded me of California in the sixties. I half expected to see a hippie replete with reefer hanging in a hammock. A hotshot Bridgehampton real estate broker, the only man in our group, compared it to Amagansett in 1959, where you’d find “a Woody and a long board.”Yes, except for the swaying coconut palms, the pelicans diving for snacks, and the tide that rises practically to the deck, just missing the beds that dot the powdery sand beach. Tulum, a tranquil outpost on the Yucatán Peninsula two hours south of touristy Cancun, has become a magnet for well-heeled New Yorkers and Europeans.

During the days we took off on adventures, often tooling down Tulum’s single road on bikes – one side carved out of the jungle, the other lined with trendy boutique hotels hugging the sea. The road ends north at the limestone ruins of a Mayan seaport and south at an entrance to the spectacular 2,000-square-mile biosphere reserve, Sian Ka’an (Mayan for “Where the sky is born”). One day Jessica took us paddleboarding on a lagoon there, surrounded by tropical forests. We balanced in poses on our boards while listening to the birdcall chatter of the park’s more than 300 bird species. We didn’t spot any of the many jaguars, pumas or ocelots that roam the land. Afterward we lounged on pillows on a dock sipping fresh juice and exfoliated ourselves with the mineral-rich silt from the lagoon floor. “This is heaven,” someone said. Yes. There are several yoginis in our group – from a Palm Beach art dealer to a veterinarian from Spokane. Ursula, a yoga beginner, had been worried that she wouldn’t be able to keep up, but she says: “Jessica never dumbed it down for me. I had such a feeling of accomplishment.” The next Tulum retreat will take place January 29 – February 4, 2017. Jessica will also be hosting yoga, standup paddleboard and surfing retreats in such exotic locales as Italy, Greece and Puerto Rico.

CANYON RANCH IS A WELLNESS CAMP FOR ADULTS
confess. I ate a packet of Dunkin’ Donuts Munchkins en route to my weekend getaway at Canyon Ranch. Not exactly a promising portent for visiting this almost three-decade old temple of wellness tucked into the Berkshires. But after a 16-wheeler blew its horn when I started to drift onto the LIE shoulder, I figured that a dose of sugar was in order. I had risen at dawn in order to arrive in time for lunch followed by a yoga class, an hour of tennis doubles and more. The schedule containing dozens of daily activities had arrived the day before and I was greedy to experience as many as possible in my two-night stay. But after my five-hour trip, the last hundred or so miles winding up the beautiful but serpentine Taconic Parkway, I had barely enough energy to eat lunch (arugula-goat cheese salad and a mini lobster roll), rest in my room and take a deeply unchallenging restorative yoga class. After which I seemed to be able to muster only enough get up and go to fall into a stupor in an infusion room where I

was enveloped by eucalyptus-drenched steam. Dinner was in the Bellefontaine Mansion, formerly a private residence. which now houses dining rooms and medical offices. An imposing replica of the Petit Trianon built in 1897, the edifice’s exterior and the interior library remain true their origins. The dining rooms have been smartly renovated and were bustling with an assortment of couples and groups of women.The spa food is tasty if you can get used to the dearth of fats and salt. At 8pm the ladies locker room lounge was filled with women awaiting treatments. It seems that the many practitioners offering modalities from Ayurvedic bodywork to anti-aging facials (there are more than 250 services!) are cranking out feel-good vibes well into the night. For my shiatsu massage I lay down on a futon where a lovely Japanese woman crouched — stretching, twisting and pulling me around in between deeply prodding tender pressure points. This was not a massage for wimps.
I awoke early the next day eager to breathe in the deep mountain air on a pole hike around the property’s 120 woodland acres. Alas, the temperature had plummeted overnight. On this late November morning the region’s first snowfall had turned the surrounding forest into an impenetrable winter wonderland. Perhaps if I’d consulted the program advisors at the ready to guide us on our wellness journey, I might have known about the snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Silly me. Instead I stayed inside and accessed all activities through seemingly miles of glass-enclosed walkways overlooking formal gardens. Alternating between three yoga classes, a spin class, a dip in the pool and sessions lounging by one of two crackling fires, I discovered that you create your own rhythm at Canyon Ranch. The 100,000-square-foot spa complex with its myriad of gyms, salons and inside courts (tennis, racquetball, basketball, squash) allow you to be as tranquil or as active as you wish.

WINTER EATS HAMPTONS EATERIES KEEP THEIR DOORS OPEN YEAR ROUND
W
e are fortunate that more and more popular summer restaurants are serving up their fare all year long. Here is a trio of new eateries that have kept their doors open this season.
Fill ‘er Up I’m not one to miss the bygone Nichol’s, a pub-like eatery that anchored the spot now occupied by Service Station. But those who loved the comfort food and generous drinks served there will not be disappointed by the new boite, which by the way is named after the filling station that once graced the location. Bartender Alex Lehnen, who presides over the always-happening copper bar with its flickering big screen TVs, caters to both beer guzzlers and cocktail sippers. Born in Germany, the lumberjack lookalike who sports a thick beard and woolen cap, serves up an impressive array of rare imported beers on tap. The revolving selection includes many from his native land. On the night we visited he was pouring a golden
libation from the world’s oldest brewery, Bavaria’s Weihenstephan, whose roots can be traced back nearly a thousand years. Lehnen, who moonlights as a private chef and prefers to be called by his moniker Alex Von Salad (from the days when he was a vinaigrette entrepreneur), is also a deft mixologist. A self-avowed mescal aficionado, he concocted a smoky miracle with that liquor, fresh pineapple puree and pickled jalapeno. He has no name for it yet, but promises to put it on the winter menu. One he does have a name for is his “Stolen Sidecar,” a variation on the classic made partly with Stolen Smoked Rum. Divine. No wonder it just won a major competition. Chef Matthew Chappele, who was recruited from the East Hampton Grill, dishes up people pleasers from Mac ‘n’ Cheese to a clever take on Oysters Rockefeller featuring the fried mollusks over a tasty mix of spinach and artichoke. There are also veggie options like the Namaste with quinoa and a black
bean rice sauté. His menu has a Southern flair with such plates as the popular Lee Roy’s Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich, layered with white cheddar and served with kale slaw. The Smoky Baby Back Ribs are swathed in a thick coating of barbecue sauce and accompanied by a creamy scallion slaw. “Everything here is sweet with a bite,” gushes my dinner mate. “It’s food from the heart.”
South of the Border I like a margarita as much as the next person (probably more). But it never occurred to me that I would not only like sipping straight tequila, but actually love it. My epiphany took place at Union Cantina, the new Mexican restaurant on Bowden Square (the former Publick House). Helmed by French-style chef Scott Kampf, executive chef at Union’s sister boite, Southampton Social Club, the new spot is known for its upscale south-of-the-border fare. And for its huge selection of tequilas. After I ordered the spot’s tasty seasonal margarita

(made with apple cider), my dinner companion mentioned that she—a prodigious rosé drinker—was switching from wine to tequila. Huh? It turns out that tequila has many health benefits from aiding digestion to fighting osteoporosis. More important to this New Yorker, it contains several factors that aid in weight-loss. Not, of course, if it’s loaded with juices and sugar. So I studied Cantina’s top-shelf tequila menu, which lists dozens of varieties, salivating over the descriptions of each one’s special flavor profile. A shot of Partida on the rocks was velvety smooth and tasted of almonds. My friend’s Casamigos had a caramel finish. We were hooked.

While we didn’t have any, the chef is known for his “deconstructed enchiladas,” feasts of toasted tortillas and meat or fish layered with such touches as guacamole, queso blanco, rojo chile sauce and black bean salsa. Our meal standouts were the Mexican Sweet Corn, a cob whose charred kernels were softly spiced with chipotle crema and sheathed with a quinoacheese crust, and the hearty beef short rib doused with a sweet mole sauce and accompanied by a dense corn bread pudding. It went down very well with another round of tequila.
Topping Rose I’ve been a fan of the restaurant at Topping Rose House since it opened despite its carousel of chefs. And I’ve been a fan of uber chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten since dining at his first American outpost, Manhattan’s JoJo, way back in the early ‘90s. (By the way, the still-extant JoJo is temporarily closed but will reopen in January with a “fresh concept and newly designed interior.”) In 1997 I swooned at the fare at his newly opened Asian-inspired eatery, Vong, atop Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel. It was named, the “Best Restaurant in the World” by the Robb Report the following year. That same year I was treated to a chef ’s dinner at his latest contribution to culinary excellence: Jean Georges at the Trump International Hotel and Tower. It was one of the most memorable meals of my life.
Topping Rose, Bridgehampton
So naturally I was looking forward to experiencing the Alsatian chef ’s new venue at Topping Rose, a post vacated by his predecessor Tom Colicchio in 2014. We had a couple of ginger margaritas at the bar accompanied by a dish of addictive spiced almonds while we checked out the design changes Vongerichten made. The chic space was given more warmth with grass-woven pendants and a dose of casual comfort with upholstered banquettes. In the dining room Billy Joel and Howard Stern were sitting at the next table with their wives. We started with a superlative pear endive salad, built like a raft – its tiers of crisscross endive spears acting as crisp packages for dabs of blue cheese and pecan nuggets. Our advice regarding the wafer-thin pizza? Run, don’t walk, to get a taste of the version layered with Fontina and an explosive burst of black truffle: a testament to the power of few ingredients when married well. The mint-scented, grass-fed grilled lamb chops served with a bracing Aleppo pepper sauce were melt-in-your mouth. And the accompanying broccoli spaetzel was so scrumptious we briefly flirted with the idea of becoming vegetarian. Did we mention the incomparable pumpkin crème brulee? In short, in this reviewer’s opinion, the Topping Rose continues to be the best gastronomic adventure the Hamptons has to offer.

ARTISTS YOU NEED TO KNOW THREE ARTISTS INSPIRED BY THEIR SURROUNDINGS The Light Stuff One thing that distinguishes the work of Shelter Island artist, Sylvia Hommert, is her use of unusual materials – from crystalline mineral salts to metal leaf. It’s all in her effort to capture the “liquid and fluid nature of light,” she says. “I am captivated by the silvery light glistening off alpine icicles and the lavender iridescence of sunset on water.” Drawn to materials that “enhance and illuminate,” she starts by laying down a reflective surface such as holographic paper or “pearly paua shell.” She then tops it with a substance such as beeswax or bee resin, whose malleable qualities allow her manipulation – sometimes even using a flame to burn them – to expose the reflective material underneath “that holds a hint of mystery that’s akin to uncovering buried treasure.” The substances also “help me create depth, texture and dimension.” The final step is painting on a layer of water-based pigments. Before embracing art full time, Hommert was a fashion designer who worked for such style icons as

Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren. “I was always intrigued by textiles.” Traveling extensively for her job, she made a point to keep up with the art world by “going to every gallery wherever I was in the world.” While her abstract images of sunbursts and geometric configurations delight the viewer, the creative process delights her. “It’s very process-driven, very repetitive. It keeps me in meditative zone.” Her work is in many collections including those of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Los Angeles; Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas; Turnberry Resort, Turnberry, Florida, and Ghiradelli Hotel, San Francisco.
The first bridge he painted was the 59th Street Bridge, a structure for which he harbors a deep attachment: “In the early 1900s my grandfather, Francisco Masi, was one of the multitudes of Italian laborers who hauled steel girders to build it.” Before setting paint (mostly watercolor) to paper, Masi walks across each bridge and studies its history and architecture so that he can best capture the essence of his subject. “I tend to use watercolor thickly—the way most people use oils,” he says. He applies multiple glazes and “juicy washes” before focusing on such details as pins, bolts, curves, angles, masonry, and wire.
Building Bridges Antonio Masi lives in Montauk, but he paints dramatic ethereal images of New York City’s great bridges. His inspiration was born in 1947 when he emigrated with his family from Italy, passing through Ellis Island and gazing up at “thousands of glowing lights dotting the skyline.” His large-scale works (up to 8-feet tall and 7-feet wide) evoke those early “indelibly imprinted and magical moments.”

His images of the mammoth stone structures rising like cathedrals into the heavens are brought down to earth by the street level reality: graffiti here, a smudge of yellow taxi there. “My primary concern is to capture mood and those stirring, overpowering sensations reminiscent of my first glimpse of New York Harbor.”

Close to Home When Dana Little Brown began painting full time, she focused on “things that I grow.” It’s no wonder. The artist, who has made the Hamptons home for the past 40 years, resides in an 1860 North Sea manor house that presides over a 28-acre “gentleman’s farm.” Produce from her sizable vegetable garden – from onions to peppers – showed up on canvases, as did flowers grown from seed in her greenhouse. A vibrant rendering of zinnias and Gloriosa Daisies executed in yellow, red and orange oil pastels hangs over the dining room mantel. The richly saturated hues are given a sumptuous texture by the velour paper on which they are depicted. Beyond still lifes the artist meandered into her garden to capture intimate flora-draped pathways. Heading
"What's In Your Aquarium?" by Dana Little Brown
to the chicken coop, she painted a series of loving homages to her hens – Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorps – which were all killed by raccoons. Venturing further afield on neighborhood walks with her dog or by bicycle Brown explored the local waterways – painting the grasses and dunes surrounding such picturesque Southampton beachscapes as Heady Creek. Early on she made a series of paintings of the iconic dilapidated Meadow Lane boathouse once owned by Greek ship-building magnate Manuel Kulukundis. Alas, the structure was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The aquatic theme runs through many of her works. Having grown up a block from the beach in Huntington, she started swimming at age four and spent her childhood “at the beach every day in the
summer.” A series of seashells was inspired by her own collection, a legacy from her grandfather who lived in Miami. The intensely luminous studies seem veiled with fairy dust. Here on the water-saturated South Fork these seashore mementos have sold well. Her latest series is a radical departure from her past oeuvre: fantastical oceanic scenes of mermaids communing with fish. “It’s fun for me to make it up.” One titled “Don’t Let Them Bite,” refers to the summer people who “can suck you dry.” What started her on mermaids was what she calls “the Kardashian invasion,” which took place a couple of years ago when the self-promoting family moved in nearby. Her reaction to her Hollywood neighbors was to paint a “plus-size mermaid” squished into a small space and swimming around a stone castle. She called it: “What’s in Your Aquarium?”
