AN ARCHITECT CREATES A SUSTAINABLE FAMILY HOUSE IN GREENPORT FOR A TOUGH CUSTOMER. HIMSELF. BY KATYA RUSSELL

W

ayne Turett, the founder and principal of the New York City-based Turett Collaborative Architects TCA, has been known to design apartments with a fair amount of razzle-dazzle. He once installed a curved stainless

steel slide in an East Village duplex. Another time he accompanied the owner of an Upper East Side condo to a town high in the Swiss Alps in search of a stone destined for a thirty-foot-high interior wall. Yet it wasn’t until a few years ago that Turett finally created a home of his own. The project began when he chanced upon a piece of land for sale in Greenport. Turett is a committed sailor and he and his wife had kept a weekend retreat in that town for years. On learning that the nearly half-acre property stretched all the way down to the water and had its own dock, he made an offer without delay. It was 2014 and although he didn’t know it at the time, he would spend the next four years working on the project in fits and starts during time carved out of his architecture practice. Designing an apartment building or drawing up plans for a gut renovation is one thing; creating a house from the ground up is quite another. Houses, Turett notes, have a special appeal for architects ‘because they are like sculptures.’ Indeed, the interior of the 2,400-square-foot two-story and cellar structure has a sculptural quality. Tellingly, it has no razzle-dazzle whatsoever. ‘My personal taste runs toward the minimal,’ says Turett, who imbued the house with a Scandinavian aesthetic. That sense of style comes through in his design choices, in the oiled wide-plank pine floors, in the palette

An airtight building envelope, proper insulation, and the careful placement of windows — to inhibit solar gain in summer and encourage it in the winter — helped to create an ultra-efficient house.

HAUTE SPOT GENE CASEY GETS BACK ON STAGE BY DAWN WATSON

S

ynonymous with the East End music scene, Gene Casey and his band, the Lone Sharks, have been commanding stages all over the North and South Forks for decades. Heading what many refer to as the “House Band of the Hamptons,” the Long Island Music Hall of Fame recipient of the Long Island Sound Award has also played with the likes of Bo Didley and can be heard on a number of television and film soundtracks, including “Sons of Anarchy,” “Justified,” “Being Charlie,” “The Killing Season” in addition to the radio program “A Prairie Home Companion” on National Public Radio. It just makes sense that now that many of the pandemic restrictions have been lifted on live performances and outdoor gatherings, we should get the music scene scoop directly from one of our most popular entertainers. Haute Spot caught up with Casey just before the Memorial Day holiday to talk about the past year and what’s ahead for the East End.

HRES: Was your approach to performance changed by the time we all spent in the digital world? Casey: Not having the energy of the audience moving right in front of you does change things. It was a real challenge to put across songs that didn’t need the applause or dancing. It forced me to work hard at something new, and to appreciate the process more. I went more into a troubadour-type folky mode. I tried to pick songs that stood alone and told a story instead of ones that depended on groups of people and movement. Casey: It feels great. We’ve done three shows in front of a live audience so far. I’m not going to lie, the first one really felt strange after all this time away.

HRES: That sounds like making very good use of the time. What about one of the slight negatives, such as how the pandemic has affected your stage outfits?

HRES: Ha! Aside from that, what can your fans expect this summer? Casey: We will be playing outside a lot and a bit earlier, which makes my wife happy.

HRES: Have the gigs met your expectations now that things are different than they used to be?

On a positive note, I did manage to write a whole bunch of songs and recorded them from home, so it wasn’t all bad. I was also able to reflect a bit more on what I wanted. This time apart really made me vow to be more selective with what and where we play. As much as I missed working, I also came to the realization that life is short and it’s not worth killing yourself to do stuff you don’t believe in or just to fill a date in a book.

Casey: A low blow! Yes, that has been an issue. Did you know that at the end of his life, poor Elvis had one jumpsuit that he could fit into. I’m feeling that right now. I’m calling this my “last jumpsuit tour!”

HRES: How does it feel to be back in action now?

Casey: As a performer, you can’t wait to play again. But what struck me most was how important it was for people to be able to interact with each other and just have some fun. Being on the stage side of things, we tend to think about what we need to do as performers and forget how what it’s like for the people in the audience. It’s not just about going to see a band, it’s about connecting with friends and family, interacting with other people — just being around each other and dancing — it’s essential for our wellbeing as humans.

Casey: This has been a real humbler of an experience. And I really missed my bandmates. We’re all friends, and it was tough to not see each other.

But, I have to say it was remarkable to see how people would still create connections online. They’d chat and comment, not just with the band but with each other, whenever that option was available. Music is not just about the sound, the radio or the download — at the end of the day, it’s really about that interaction. HRES: Were there any takeaways, or lessons learned, from this time off?

Also, I know it’s difficult to keep track of all the changing restrictions but please be mindful of the health and safety of everyone at an event. And don’t be offended if I’m not hugging and kissing and shaking hands like I used to do. We’ve all got to do our part. Here are the best East End stores selling local goods.

PETERSON’S FISH MARKET This new kid in town is owned and operated by local fishermen Wesley Peterson and Doug Davidson. Peterson, a fourth-generation Montauker, grew up fishing in the Montauk Harbor waters. Davidson has spent the past decade working on some of Montauk’s most recognizable commercial fishing vessels. The store carries locally sourced fish, some meats, and a handful of prepared foods, as well as cool condiments and a slim selection of produce. It’s definitely this year’s go-to for fish on the East End.

AMBER WAVES MARKET & CAFÉ This sprawling Amagansett market features produce from Amber Waves Farm, of course, but it also features everything from East End wine to cheese to preserved goods. The farm grows grains, too, like winter wheat, hulless oats, flint corn, and popcorn, and you can buy the grains whole or processed as flour. The café, which operates in season, serves up food that highlights the farm’s bounty. Like Balsam Farms and Green Thumb Organic Farm, Amber Waves also operates a popular CSA, which is an even better way to get a dose of local flavor.

CHRIS KELLY ADDS NEW INSPIRATION TO A FAMILIAR SETTING BY HEATHER BUCHANAN

A

rtist Chris Kelly creates striking paintings based on the power of lines, but in returning to his East Hampton roots he has come full circle. After an education at Cornell and a successful 20 year art career in New York City and Williamsburg, he felt a calling back to where he grew up for a perfect spot to raise a family, renovating a house in the Springs with room for his ideal art studio. He is in hallowed artistic company just down the road from the Pollock-Krasner house and the Judith Leiber Collection. “It’s a nice place to be hunkered down and my commute is great,” he says with a smile. Kelly’s precision and attention to mathematical detail can be seen in his series of geometrically shaped designs. “Math is as much a medium as my oil paint,” says Kelly, “I enjoyed studying the old masters and learning about the golden ratio. The Greek temples were thought the most pleasing with their proportions of a rectangle of 1 to 1.618. I often use a golden ratio caliper and sometimes I will extend it or contract it. It’s like putting together a puzzle.” Utilizing oil paint and pencil lines give the work depth, some paint dense and thick and other thin which lets the light through. “It creates foreground and background which can shift, and I find

that visually interesting.” He also notes, “I try to counteract the precision with the subtle vibration of the brush strokes so when you get close, you see the hand of the artist. The lighter center acts like a window or a doorway so you are looking into a space where you want to go or where you just came from.” It is an invitation to a journey instead of a destination. Kelly also has a command of color, understanding the additive or subtractive color theory of red, green and blue or the one we know from our computer printers, magenta, cyan and yellow. He comments, “I choose complimentary colors or colors in a certain family, and I build as I go. The painting takes on a life of its own.” With an interest in the metaphysical through yoga and martial arts, Kelly also relates his color choice to the chakra system where the seven energy centers of the body are reflected by different hues. “I like the green to represent the heart chakra or with the throat chakra it is not just an aquamarine blue but includes violets and lavenders associated with the crown chakra.” It is indicative of how art is both an act of communication, speaking to an audience, but also resonating on an emotional and spiritual level.

Usually selling his work through art consultants or interior designers, Kelly decided to reach out to local galleries on the East End upon his return. He found a kindred spirit in Colm Rowan and launched his new exhibit on Memorial Day at the Colm Rowan Fine Art gallery in East Hampton. Kelly comments, “I reached out and he responded right away. He’s very insightful and it’s been great working with him.” How has the Hamptons experience evolved for Kelly over time? “Growing up it was about hanging out on the beach all day and going to your restaurant job,” he says. “As an adult I am discovering even more richness out here, and I have more freedom of time. I have connected a lot more with nature.” This organic experience ranges from mushroom hunting with his wife to harvesting oysters to creating a dandelion vodka. Kelly notes, “My artworks are about the connection of our inner selves to something greater beyond ourselves, and they are reminders of the wild beauty that is all around us. We are a part of nature, and the mathematics that exist just behind the scenes are proof of this.”
