Since May 2020, the three-star Michelin- and multiple James Beard Award-winning restaurant has prepared 400 meals a day, using City Harvest-collected food, for delivery to shelters.

Based on the terrific book by Rumdan Alam, a National Book Award for Fiction finalist in 2020, it dives into some pretty deep waters, including class, race, life-and-death issues, and the human fallout that occurs when disaster strikes.

TASTY TV Looks like The Hallmark Channel is adapting Katie Lee Biegel’s 2011 debut novel Groundswell into a movie. No word yet on who will star, but the madefor-television film is set to premier later this year.

HAUTE SPOT PIANOFEST'S PAUL SCHENLY COMPOSES A COMMUNITY

“I do everything I can to create a non-competitive and happy atmosphere where they can have fun and grow as people, to experience art and life, while they’re learning about composition and fingering,” he says. Though the performers are housed in a variety of rental spots across East Hampton, they spend much of their time as a group, at the practice house in East Hampton, which has 11 grand pianos, and even one in the kitchen, reports Schenly. Beach breaks and leisure time are built into the program too, he says.

I

t’s been nearly 40 years since Paul Schenly began coming to the South Fork for the summer. It’s an annual tradition that’s become an institution. Quite literally. The founder of Pianofest in the Hamptons recalls that first year in the mid-1980s when he ventured out East. The pianist — who has been a soloist with several major United States-based orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, among others — had been living at the Ansonia on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, traveling and working non-stop as a performer. He was desperately in need of some vacation time. A friend suggested that that he head out east. So Schenly followed the advice and found a small cottage to rent on Three Mile Harbor in East Hampton. The experience changed his life. “I had been working hard without a break and needed time to get away, to think, to relax, to recharge,” he said. “I’m so glad I did because that’s how I discovered this unusually beautiful and inspiring area. The sunsets, the nature, the culture. I was hooked!” The journey not only proved to be a balm for his soul, but it also provided the busy musician a new purpose. More than just a summertime getaway, the East End became a place for annual

pilgrimage for Schenly, who is now the artistic director for Piano Cleveland in Ohio. Here in the Hamptons, he realized an opportunity to teach and share the experience with others. Thus, Pianofest was born. Featuring concentrated study and weekly recitals at venues across the East End during the summer season, the immersive experience has proved just as rewarding for emerging talent as it has for local music lovers. The program has fostered a wide array of prodigiously gifted musicians and has helped to cement the Hamptons as a serious setting for concert pianists looking to learn and grow their careers. Past performers, guests, faculty, and artists in residence include Jerome Lowenthal, Ursula Oppens, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Konstantin Soukhovetski, Michelle Cann, Sergei Babayan, Yefim Bronfman, Andre Watts, Richard Goode, Anton Nel, Claude Frank, Arie Vardi, Melvin Chen, Yoheved Kaplinsky, John O’Connor, and Pavel Nersessian. Typically presenting about a dozen or so collegeage conservatory students, the festival program focuses on ethic-based support rather than competition. Building a well-rounded person instead of single-minded musical automatons is important to Schenly, who prides himself with providing his charges with a community within which they can learn and grow while nurturing their own friendships, performance opportunities and positive life experiences.

“It’s not just a piano competition, it's total immersion, where everyone is doing everything together, including working together to prepare the food,” he says. “They’re slicing, and dicing, and cooking together in concert.” It’s amazing to watch the friendships and partnerships being formed, he adds. In fact, Anderson and Roe, a famously successful piano duo with Billboard Chart-topping albums and several Emmy-nominated music videos, met the first time at Pianofest, according to Schenly. This summer, he says he’s “looking forward to new pianists, new talent, new music and new faculty,” especially since Covid adversely impacted the past couple of years. The 34th Pianofest season will also offer up the inaugural Annaliese Soros Visiting Artist Program, which will bring a slew of fresh faces, and even more opportunity, to the festival. “I can’t wait for our first concert in June,” Schenly says, opining that he’s “full of gratitude for this time and place” where’s he’s been able to develop from “a bright young thing to a wise old owl” since he first ventured out East and formed Pianofest. “It’s the beginning of another new chapter, of sharing and appreciating music, engaging the audience, coming back to this beautiful place. BY KAREN DASH Southampton. The sprawling property incorporates the site of the original Southampton Riding and Hunt Club, built in the 1920s, and where young Jacqueline Bouvier rode. Asking $23.5 million, the property is repped by Harald Grant and Bruce Grant at Sotheby’s International Realty and Ed Petrie at Compass. Despont, who worked on transforming the former Montauk home of Bernie Madoff, as well as the 1986 restoration of the Statue of Liberty, and a 2016 renovation of the Ritz Paris, also owns a 10,000-square-foot townhouse in Tribeca that popped up for sale last November at $25 million.

ello and welcome to summer! As the weather warms up, is the Hamptons real estate market cooling? Yes and no. Prices are up, up, up, but inventory is down. Little inventory makes for fewer sales.

GO-GO GANSETT Sleepy old Amagansett, where oceanfront costs less than higher profile towns to the west, certainly seems to be heating up. To wit: one high-profile buy and another newsworthy listing. The listing, for a $25 million oceanfront home at 2056 Montauk Highway, is with Kyle Rosko, Marcy Braun and Alexandra McDevitt of Douglas Elliman. Set on 2.4 acres of dunes, surrounded by nature, the elevation of the 8,200-square-foot home affords gorgeous views of both the ocean and Napeague Bay. Locals know that means both stunning sunrises and outstanding sunsets. Custom-built by Joe Farrell, the great room includes a fireplace, a wet bar and doors overlooking the pool and deck. Five en suite bedrooms are on the first floor, along with a powder room and a laundry room. The upper level is where the magic happens, with stunning vistas of the ocean. There’s a living room and an oversized kitchen, along with a dining room. The master bedroom suite, with separate sitting room, is also on this level. There’s also a gym and bonus room.

HELLO AGAIN, MICKEY Veteran retail tycoon Mickey Drexler seems to have made a hobby of buying and selling high-end real estate. Of course, in our area, he’s best known for having purchased the Warhol/Church estate, Eothen, and then selling it to art collector Adam Lindesmann. Having put his Tribeca townhouse on the market in November, he obviously can’t quit the Hamptons. He purchased an oceanfront home in Amagansett in an off-market, though not-so-secret, transaction valued at a cool $9.5 million. Martha Gundersen and Paul Brennan of Douglas Elliman represented both sides in the transaction. The plot, as is typical for the area, is just 0.67 of an acre. But unlike many other homes in the nabe, this property sports an oceanside pool.

In Southampton, Despont paid a total of $8.55 million for three contiguous parcels between 2011 and 2013. That includes Rosewood Farm, the prior Southampton Riding Club, which spans about 11 acres, along with a 23-acre parcel, and another of just about half an acre. The half-acre plot includes a four-bedroom house, previously owned by fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka, which Despont uses as a guesthouse. Despont transformed Rosewood Farm’s largest barn into the estate’s main house, while two other barns were also converted, one to a garage and the other into a pool house next to the infinity pool. The grounds overlook another 50 acres of agricultural reserve. There’s room for a tennis court and the compound could also be subdivided back to its original trio of lots.

The wood-clad and partially vine-encrusted contemporary home is pre-existing, non-conforming and set closer to the ocean than current zoning would allow, making it irreplaceable and unique. The property boasts over 110 feet of ocean frontage overlooked by a broad deck and a huge semicircular terrace. Welcome back, Mickey.

FAREWELL TO FEIFFER The Hamptons is well known as a haven for fine artists but, in fact, the area has also been called home by many great cartoonists, including Charles Addams, Gahan Wilson, and Jules Feiffer. Feiffer, who is now 93, has won many accolades in his eight decades of work, including the Pulitzer Prize. Feiffer has listed his house on Shelter Island, which he shares with wife JZ Holden. Set on over half an acre of land, the house borders 45 acres of preserve, which makes for peaceful, pastoral views of flora and fauna all year round. Asking $1.2 million, the sweet-shingled saltbox is repped by Dawn Watson at Douglas Elliman.

Built in 2016, the house features three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The owners’ suite is downstairs; upstairs is an additional bedroom, bathroom and bonus room. Of course, the walls are lined with books and original drawings, not to mention interesting midcentury furniture. Outside, there is a relaxing deck overlooking the preserve and room for a pool. Make a deal, call a pool installer, and then go have an idyllic summer.

OLD MCGAYNOR HAD A FARM Mike and Kerry Gaynor are among the best boutique developers in the Hamptons today. Their signature touch is delivering plenty of farmlike features on a small footprint, in an exquisitely tasteful package. To wit, their newest endeavor, Shelter Island Farm. Set on just two acres, the property offers a myriad of highend bucolic features and has just come up for grabs, listed by Jennifer C. Wilson and Treacy Cotter at Saunders, asking $13.75 million.

As for the outbuildings, they are there for fun. The heavy barn has space for horse stalls, a large car collection, or for three more bedrooms, and currently includes a powder room. At the head of the Gunite pool, the pool house boasts a zinc top bar with a kegerator and a tap, ice maker, dishwasher and a beverage center, a powder room and an outdoor shower. As such it is a triumph in one man’s artistic journey.” Glynn is also passionate about the charity he founded, Wings Over Haiti, which he started by flying medical supplies in his private plane to the beleaguered country after the 2010 earthquake and donates a portion of his artistic proceeds. He updates the success, “The first school we built has over 225 kids and growing and it’s a miracle. We bought land and built buildings and now there are basketball courts and musical instruments and smiling faces.” The Wings Over Haiti annual benefit will be held July 16th at the East Hampton Airport. Maybe it is just good karma but Glynn comments, “I went to my show recently, and I had this feeling from my own paintings that I was receiving energy from them. AFTER RE-DISCOVERING HER CALLING IN THE HAMPTONS, AN INTERIOR DESIGNER SETS THE TONE IN BLUE. BY KATYA RUSSELL

K

atie White stumbled into a career in interior design after working in investment banking. Decorating was her first love and it came naturally to her. “When I was way younger, I wanted to be an architect,” she recalls. “I spent hours at a drafting table. But then, in college, I took the safe route and studied economics.” It wasn’t until she bought her first home on Shelter Island that she changed course. She updated that house and when it was complete, she says, “I was like, I need another project, quick!” She began helping out friends and family, and before long people began sending referrals her way. A couple of years ago White set her sights on moving to Bridgehampton. In short order, she found a spec house just outside the village that gave on to open fields. What drew her to the property — apart from the fantastic views — was the fact that it was a blank slate. She recognized an opportunity to put her mark on the house, to make it her own. “I first saw the property in 2017 when the only thing on it was a tiny cottage. After the developer cleared the land, I remember driving by and thinking, Oh my God, the views are amazing. Because only the framing has been done, I was able to select the trim, the fixtures, the floors, everything.” But that was just the beginning. White had over six-thousand-square-feet to decorate: eight bedrooms (one of which she turned into an office), seven en suite bathrooms, and two half bathrooms.

The result is the long, narrow structure with double-height ceilings that White calls “modern farmhouse.” While the décor is eclectic, the motif that ties it altogether is the color blue. The blue theme began with a slab of Azul Macaubas quartzite. With its elaborate undulations and wave-like forms, it reminded her of the ocean. “It cost quite a bit more than I had budgeted, but it was a good call, as it ended up guiding the other finishes in the house.” Thus, the walls of the formal living room (one of two) are clad in blue grasscloth paper, as is much of the upholstery — from the blue leather-bottomed counter stools in the kitchen to the Holly Hunt chairs in the formal sitting room. “Blue is a very calming color and it felt Hamptons-appropriate,” says White. For warmth and contrast, she lay down grey wide plank floorboards of engineered wood. “I do a lot of whitewashed oak floors for my clients in the Hamptons, and they look beautiful, but I wanted something a little different,” she notes. Statement-making lighting was her other bold design move. “I think of lights as the jewelry of the house,” says White. Among those jewels are a custom chandelier she designed in brass that starts on the second story of the house and drops down through the stairwell, tying the two floors together. In the formal dining room, White hung Ochre’s ‘Arctic Pear,’ a halo chandelier bedecked with dozens and dozens of crystals. For added interest, she clad the area over the dining table with wallpaper in a black and white pattern by Kelly Wearstler. 52

Overall, the house reflects White’s own personal taste and style and way of life. “When I work with clients, one of the first things I ask is how they are going to use the space. For me, as someone who has a kid and three dogs, I need everything to be absolutely bullet-proof in terms of upholstery. That means performance fabric all around. You don’t want to be constantly running around after guests and worrying about high traffic areas.”

Not all her clients have kids and dogs, however, a fact that influences their choice of materials. To wit, White is currently working on an addition to a house on Shelter Island that will feature big slabs of Calacatta Viola marble throughout. Says White: “The owner created a massive library and we are using marble everywhere, including on a seven-foot-high mantelpiece. It’s going to be pretty spectacular.”

HIGH END HAMPTONS HOME BUILDERS ARE PUTTING THE FAB IN PREFAB

he only thing that causes more consternation than discussing politics at a dinner party is asking how someone’s building project is going. With supply chain problems, cost estimates that can jump from $1,000 to $2,000 a square foot and pandemic scarcity of insulation topping that of toilet paper, the Hamptons homeowner has faced an uphill battle to build their dream house. So, you can only imagine the envy of a homeowner looking at a hole in the ground

while a neighbor’s house seems to go up in weeks. You will hear the trick is prefabrication, but this is nothing like the Sears and Roebuck’s Kit House some of which still stand in the Hamptons. In essence the process is about a quality controlled, off-site construction which has repeatability, reliability and a high R-value (insulation effectiveness). There are several of these companies finding their niche here as Hamptons high-end building is being redefined.

Founded in 1990 by Joseph Tanney and Robert Luntz, Resolution: 4 Architecture (RES4) set out to enhance sustainable practices that address the current and long-term challenges of the building industry. The ten-person firm has been internationally recognized with multiple AIA Design Awards for its “Modern Modular.” Tanney explains, “We are architects and we design custom, site-specific homes for individual clients. We just happen to get them built in a factory. We’ve spent a number of years looking into the process which allows us to design very specifically for each client. It’s not a cookie cutter approach.” The firm cut their teeth or 2 x 4’s in this case on renovation projects in Manhattan where time and space were at a minimum. Working within these constraints inspired their “thinking inside the box” mentality. They found a factory in Pennsylvania where they could prefabricate the home and deliver it to the site, only restrained by what the department of transportation allows you to ship down a highway. “We are building faster, better and more cost efficiently,” says Tanney, “It’s a very high value proposition where we

DESIGN build out East.” While mass production is a key component, individual design creates not only a custom look but predetermination of details to prevent costly changes on the job site. “We design with our client right down to the towel bars,” says Tanney, “The rest is execution. It’s a way of working where we have a series of design principles that create guidelines for us, and we always work with the best-in-class suppliers.” With the factory working on a parallel timeline, once the approvals are in place and the foundation and septic are set, the home can be erected quite quickly. Tanney emphasizes that sustainability is also about sustaining your bank balance. An exhaustive design process with 3D computer models ensures a higher degree of predictability in terms of time and cost. He explains, “The crews are also on site less because about 80% of the house is set in just one day. They are made in big blocks with all the walls and windows and insulation and sheet rock, lighting, custom countertops, cabinets and plumbing fixtures, sinks, tiles and speaker wire. Every inch is specified so it only takes two to four weeks to build the house. It’s incredibly exciting.” He sums up, “Each house is something specific but it’s also part of a bigger process.” Little did housing industry innovator Emil Hanslin know when he founded Yankee Barn Homes in 1969, he would be establishing a lexicon of one of the most popular contemporary Hamptons home styles, the modern barn. The goal for the company remains the same today, to build custom homes with the finest materials for weather protection and energy conservation, winning multiple years of the Best of Houzz Design award. Their designs now reach across all different architectural styles. Creative Director and co-owner Jeffrey Rosen who has been with the company for the past 11 years comments, “Every house is a custom design house. They can create any kind of inspiration they want.” Rosen says they are happy to work with a client’s architect or designer but also offer an in-house design team which can save on professional fees. “There is a time savings as well in terms of the house being pre-manufactured at the factory in New Hampshire,” he explains, “The house can be designed and stored and ready for delivery in advance. Houses can go up any time of the year as long as the foundation, slab or crawl is in place. The house is delivered to the foundation and the shell is put up in a week to two weeks completely enclosed. That is huge.” “The houses are also extremely airtight because we have a trademarked insulation system,” says Rosen, “There is not the traditional leakage from stick build.” The company has developed its trademarked roof and wall panel systems, increasing efficiency of the home. It’s on people’s mind these days of the green value.” Well, maybe there’s just enough left over to create a very chic Hamptons doghouse. What they have mastered is a sense of the Hamptons client’s desires. “We understand what they want in terms of the sense of circulation and volumes of space. They still want an ode to country living whether it’s a barn or shingle style home. We also make our own windows and sliders so we can customize all the details.” The results are not only stunning aesthetically, but in their energyefficient functionality. Chugh says, “We also help people understand the process of prefabrication, so they comprehend the difference from say a Prius vs a Tesla.”

As of March, the Clam Bar, in Napeague, is now open again for business. Among the Hamptons’ most iconic restaurants, this beachy spot truly summons summer as few restaurants can. Sit out in the sun and order local Montauk pearl oysters, clams on the half shell, and, naturally, a lobster salad roll. Or opt for the steamers — Clam Bar is one of the sole places on the East End to serve this coveted style of bivalve, after all — dipped in broth and drawn butter, at a casual place where sitting outside is part of the point.

I

t is the season of outdoor dining. Shed your coat, your scarf, and your hat and prepare for the warmer weather. In the spirit of the season, we’re embracing the moment of eating outdoors. This is the beautiful-if-shortlived season of outdoor dining. Soak it up. It doesn’t last forever. On the East End, the best spots for outdoor dining offer hidden patios, romantically lit yards, and even waterfront views. There is no such thing as too many options, but some of our favorites are the ones that catch you by surprise. In Amagansett, Donna Lennard and Justin Smillie’s il Buco al Mare’s seafood-centric restaurant offers a petite backyard, a respite from the busy streets of the Hamptons. It’s hard to believe that you’re anywhere in New York, actually, when the ancient grain focaccia comes out of the wood-burning oven. A kitchen helmed by chef de cuisine Eugenio Plajo takes full advantage of the East End’s bounty, leaning into local fish, seasonal produce, and everything in between (think tuna cheek sashimi with

colatura and citrus, fiore di zucca and spicy lime salt, and little neck clams with Bernardo’s bacon and grilled bread).

Follow the road east, all the way into Montauk, where Harvest on Fort Pond betrays one of the hamlet’s most coveted outdoor gardens. The restaurant takes no reservations, so expect a wait for the winding, terraced outdoor area, which overlooks the water and is populated with blooming flowers. Never mind all that. Like all of summer’s best treasures, dinner outside at this gem is more than worth the wait. (And, given the enormous size of the entrees, you’ll have memories to look back on, for the next few nights or so at least).

O by Kissaki serves up one of the Hamptons’ most surprising — and surely most underrated — sushi experiences, with inventive nigiri, shockingly fresh fish, and a price point that is relatively in tune with the rest of the East End’s dining. As warm weather commences, the restaurant opens its adorable outdoor patio, closed in by shrubbery and lit from above by Edison bulbs. Although the restaurant faces a busy road, the patio feels worlds away, and is well worth the transportive visit (but do that for the sushi, too, which truly is exceptional). Sag Harbor’s Lulu Kitchen & Bar, the centerpiece of which is a wood-fired oven on the interior, offers a dainty front patio. But in the rear, guests can really relax into outdoor dining, in an area that is as welcoming as the weather itself.

The Samsung line, which retails from about $3000 to $4000, recently announced the release of the MyBespoke capability, enabling consumers to add original artwork or photos custom-printed on the French doors of their refrigerators, too, for a fully customized space. For CAFÉ, notably, approachable luxury also means the integration of technology. The brand produces a line of induction ranges, and their induction, electric, and dual fuel ranges are all Alexa-, Google Home-, and Nest-compatible. Some of the more overlooked appliances, Mr. Davis says, which are equally capable of adding panache to a kitchen, include the CAFÉ dishwasher drawer — a drawer that functions as two dishwasher drawers in the same space as a traditional single dishwasher — and the built-in microwave oven.

f you’ve noticed a difference in appliances of late, you aren’t alone. Stainless steel, once the go-to for those looking to streamline the modern kitchen, is getting a field of competitors in the mid-tier field. For some appliance makers, like GE’s CAFÉ line, it’s back to black and white, but with a bit of a spin from that drab 80s style you may remember from the old days. “By disrupting what we call the ‘sea of stainless’ appliance offerings, CAFÉ gives consumers the opportunity to customize their appliance hardware through our customizable professional collection, or choose a more contemporary and urban glass finish through our modern glass collection,” says Wayne Davis, senior brand director for CAFÉ. Davis calls the price point “mass premium,” which falls somewhere in the middle for luxury appliance buyers — and it’s a place where many appliance makers are now landing, especially those who are choosing to take more risks with finishes and color. For CAFÉ, that means matte black and matte white offerings, and customizable handles available in brushed black,

copper, bronze, and stainless steel (Mr. Davis says that more colors and finishes may be available down the road as well). “CAFÉ is all about giving consumers, who are more self-aware and expressive than ever before, the opportunity to design kitchens that fit their personal tastes with an offering of unique finishes and hardware options,” he says. “CAFÉ is the first brand to make this kind of appliance personalization available at a mass premium price point, while also delivering on exceptional appliance performance.”

“We think of our CAFÉ appliances as the jewelry of the kitchen,” Mr. Davis says. He notes that appliances, in 2022, in the “mass premium” market, are the kind of item that homeowners might upgrade to not because their last appliances stopped working, but, rather, because they want to redefine the aesthetic of their kitchen. Will stainless ever really go out of style? No, probably not. But for now, appliance makers like CAFÉ, Samsung, and others are working to introduce buyers to the wide world of possibility. Edible Flowers And Entertaining: Corn Tortillas

dible flowers can be a great way to add an extra special touch when entertaining guests. Some of my favorite edible flowers are pansies. Pansies come in the Spring and if you’re lucky you can get them to survive throughout the garden season. We add them to salads, garnish dishes with them and even dress our favorite cocktails. One of my personal favorite ways to use pansies is by making homemade “flower tortillas”. They are so simple to make and are sure to wow your guests.

RECIPE: 2 Cups Masa Corn Flour (Gluten Free) 1 ½ Cups Warm Water 1 tsp Olive Oil 1 tsp Sea Salt Parchment Paper Or Plastic Wrap Tortilla Press purchased online STEP 1-3: Combine masa corn flour with water, olive oil & sea salt. Once combined let it rest for about 5 minutes. The dough should feel soft. If it feels too dry add a teaspoon of water. Divide dough into 19 equal balls by rolling them one by one by hand. Cover them with a damp cloth to keep them soft and moist.

STEP 4-5: Line your tortilla press with parchment paper or plastic wrap. One by one place a ball of dough in between and press them until each tortilla is about 5-6 inches in diameter. Arrange your pansies on top of the already pressed tortilla and re-press the flowers into the tortilla. Heat a skillet or griddle to medium heat. Carefully peel the tortilla from the parchment paper and cook them flower side up for about 40 seconds. irds, bees and butterflies all help pollinate the plants in our gardens, farms and wild places. You might be surprised to know that so do bats, beetles and small mammals. The heroes of our gardens, whose essential work mostly goes unrecognized, pollinators help plants reproduce, which helps sustain the ecosystem that in turn sustains us. They help plants to reproduce and continue the cycle of life, which helps sustain the ecosystems that in turn, sustain us. If you have a flower garden, or if you visit one of the public gardens on the East End, in spring and summer you’ve probably seen bees, other insects, and butterflies perched on the flowers. They’re drinking the nectar which nourishes them, but in the process they pick up pollen from the flowers and spread it to other flowers, which in turn enables the plants to produce the fruits, vegetables and nuts that we eat. Pollinators are endangered now, and you can help support them. If you have a garden – even if it’s only a bunch of plants in pots on your deck or patio – including

some plants attractive to pollinators will help support their essential work…and our food supply. There is an official pollinator week each year. This year it’s June 20-26. If you want to learn more, visit the website of the Pollinator Partnership (www.pollinator.org/pollinator week) or the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture). On your own property, if you see bees or other insects on the flowers in your landscape, leave them alone. If you have a garden, try to avoid spraying pesticides; if you must spray, target only plants begin attacked and harmed by pests. Don’t blanket-spray the entire garden. Here are some plants to add to your garden to support pollinators: Beebalm – a beautiful perennial flower, beebalm’s summertime flowers have colorful bracts in shades of pink, red, purple or white that bloom atop tall stems lined with pairs of aromatic green leaves (beebalm is in the mint family).

Black-eyed Susan is a summer classic in many East End gardens. Their flowers resemble daisies but they come in shades of orange-gold to bright golden yellow, with a prominent round center that’s dark brown in most varieties. Purple coneflower, or echinacea, is similar to black-eyed Susan, but its flowers are somewhere between purple and pink and the center is bronze-brown. Lavender is treasured for its intoxicating fresh fragrance. It’s heavenly planted in masses, in the garden or alongside a pathway. If you’ve never visited the Lavender by the Bay farm in East Marion on the North Fork, by all means go this summer. Yarrow, a favorite in sunny perennial flower gardens, produces flat-topped clusters of tiny flower that bloom atop tall stems in summer and come in shades of bright gold, pale yellow, pink, red, white and burnt orange.
