The four-bedroom, fourbath Greek Revival house was built for Dering, a whaling merchant, in 1835. The home still maintains its original wide-plank flooring and millwork. Its newel post and stair railing were carved way back when by notable East Hampton furniture maker Nathaniel Dominy V. LOCAL HERO HOMEOWNER FOREGOES PROFITS TO SAVE HIS HOME FOR POSTERITY
Y
ou’ve most likely driven by it and let out a sigh of appreciation: the quaint farmhouse rising out of the potato fields just north of the highway on the Southampton-Water Mill border. You would have made note of it in your mind’s eye as a rare and poignant reminder of the South Fork’s agrarian heritage. It practically shouts ‘authenticity.’ When real estate lawyer Ira Kornbluth moved into the 1,200 square foot dwelling 35 years ago, it was one of many such charming relics. Now, says Kornbluth, “It’s the only one left.” Because of that he made the financially compromising decision to designate it a local landmark. “I thought, even if it’s worth less money I want to give back. I’ve enjoyed it so much,” he says. “Money isn’t everything.” The idea struck him one day this spring when he was called by Sally Spanburgh, chair of Southampton Town’s Landmarks & Historic Districts Board, who was worried about the potential teardown of what was thought to be an 18th-century house a field away, and wondered if, as a neighbor, Kornbluth could help her determine its historic significance. Upon further investigation, that house (known as the “old Maddock

place”) was revealed to be a 1930s Colonial Revival structure in such disrepair as to negate preservation. But it got Kornbluth thinking about his own house.Known in the historical archives as the Hattie J. Halsey Tenant Farmhouse, the first land deed was recorded in 1897 by one John D. Wring. After the original dwelling there
“...this is not a place where people live, it’s part of the landscape...” - Ira Kornbluth was destroyed by fire in 1906, the property was bought by Hattie J. Halsey as part of a 14-acre agricultural parcel. At some point between 1916 and 1920 a house built in the village circa 1900 was moved there, which housed farm workers and their families till the 1970s. When Kornbluth took possession he made very few changes. Most notably he added a bay of windows and a window seat in the dining area to “bring the

outside in,” in contrast to what early residents would have desired – to keep the elements, which they had to encounter everyday, out. Once Kornbluth decided to apply for landmark status, Spanburgh went into action, researching the history of the abode, which is described in official documents as a “vernacular farmhouse…with a “front facing gabled roof…and Queen Ann double-hung windows.” There was a town board meeting and the house was unanimously declared a landmark – which means the exterior can never change. The truth is that the house was a landmark in everyone’s minds even before it became official. Kornbluth recalls telling someone he lived there. “No, you can’t live there,” she told him. “What she meant was this is not a place where people live, it’s part of the landscape,” he says. Kornbluth says that he’s always noticed that cars slow down to admire the house as they drive by. Thanks to him they will be able to do so for decades to come.

or the kitchen that has everything, there is always room for improvement – a new gadget here, an updated appliance there. Local experts hold forth on the latest kitchen trends. Interior designer and principal of Fixtures and Fittings, Nancy Davis specializes in bathroom and kitchen design and supplies plumbing fixtures and accessories to the trade and homeowner. When asked what’s new in Hamptons kitchens, she quickly rattled off a list of the latest gizmos: instant hot water; cold filtered water; garbage disposal, in-counter steamers and, for a touch of class, a Mick De Giulio kitchen sink.
Sophisticated Sink Chicago designer De Giulio has designed a sophisticated and functional collection of chef-inspired stainless-steel sinks for luxury plumbing supplier Kallista. The sinks offer “task-oriented accessories” such as a flatware tray for rinsing cutlery, dishcloth holder and removable plantation teak cutting board with knife holder.
Trending Appliances Established in 1918 on the Lower East Side, Gringer
and Sons – which opened a satellite store in Commack in 2010 – supplies appliances to homeowners and the trade, including Farrell Building Company. Vice president Lewis Shenker shared the latest in appliance trends. Induction cooktops “work on a magnetic principle” and are “the closest thing to gas with electricity. They’re responsive, fast and efficient.” Combi-Steam Ovens – Shenker says that steam ovens, a popular product that “puts a shine on bread and keeps roasts moist,” are being replaced by products that combine steam with other functions from convection to baking.
“I don’t think it will ever go out of fashion.” While high-gloss finishes are what’s happening now, Bakes relishes a satin white finish with “subtle wood accents in walnut or rift oak.” What about hardware? “There’s a movement away from polished nickel toward a brighter cleaner look with polished chrome,” he says.Though his favorite is still the former. “It’s got a softer sheen.”
Hood Bakes and Kropp’s own line of custom hoods involves “experimentation – a move away from stainless and white wood toward hoods with far more interesting design elements.” He mentions stainless steel and wood accents with metal highlights.

Kitchens for the Hamptons Lifestyle The design brains behind the Farrell Building Company, Kristen Farrell says, “I literally put myself in the kitchens” of the houses they construct. Because “we live it ourselves,” she can contribute “that extra attention to detail.” Concerned not just with “the finish and sleekness,” she begins the design process by examining the functionality. “We’re designing our kitchen when the hole for the foundation is being dug.” It’s that painstaking process along the way that results in not something you can see but something you can feel when you walk into a Farrell kitchen. The typical Farrell package is comprised of “streamlined” products from Sub-Zero, Wolf or Miele. And, of course, includes all the bells and whistles. “We’re moving away from microwaves to steam ovens since people are trying to lead healthy lives.” Now that most people make their coffee with a “Keurig or French press,” they are no longer in need of the Miele coffee maker she once provided. She’s also seen the die off of the ubiquitous pot filler. “They take away from the design of the kitchen. They’re not aesthetically appealing.” One of Farrell’s signatures is to adapt everyday items for the Hamptons lifestyle. Take the cutlery drawer. She will incorporate a deeper slide for secondary storage, making life easier when guests arrive. “One of the things we all do in the Hamptons is entertain.” Cabinets are large to accommodate Hamptons-size plates and islands have room for that extra set of dishes, glasses and serving platters.

She introduced me to interiors, textiles and beautifully designed furniture,” Dow says. “She fine tuned my aesthetic.”
The lively enterprise is the brainchild of Elizabeth Dow, a creative dynamo whose career began in fine art – some of her works hang in the shop – and has grown to encompass seemingly the entire home design world. Dow moved her headquarters from Amagansett, where she was director of the Amagansett Applied Arts school, to the expansive village digs two years ago. Her support staff numbers circa 15.
Dow’s decorative painting background was the inspiration for her modern wall coverings, which sell in 13 showrooms worldwide. Her wide-stripe paper hangs in the Oval Office. “When Lady Gaga did a video in a fake oval office she included the paper.” The Estee Lauder brand is rolling out stand-alone stores in which her paper will hang. Her huge portfolio of coverings run the gamut from such materials as grass cloth, silk and sumptuous silver and gold hand-leaf. A handsome new faux shagreen paper was designed by Hana Geery of Montauk, and another is based on one of Dow’s abstract paintings of a Turkish patchwork rug.

Speaking of patchwork rugs, Dow offers an assortment of these – squares of vintage carpets hand-stitched together in Istanbul. “It all connects,” she says. Her own collection of beautifully textured and hued textiles is sold along with those of other high-end houses. Her shop, which doubles as a showroom to the trade – she works with the Hamptons top interior designers – also showcases such reputable brands as Schumacher and Kravet.The shop, arranged in an assortment of chic salons, features many midcentury relics such as a refurbished Baker chair and upholstery pieces of her own design such as her curvedback Madison Avenue Sofa. “I’m a frustrated architect,” Dow says of her interior design venture. She has just finished a project on Clamshell Avenue in Northwest and is working on another in the Grace Estate, where she ripped the roof off the house. Of her latest business incarnation, she says: “The cool thing is everything can happen under one roof.”

I
THE HEGEMONY OF WHITE MARBLE IN HAMPTONS KITCHENS
n the Hamptons, wherever you go, in grand estates or more humble homes, you’ll see it: a kitchen outfitted with an ocean of gleaming white marble. “White marble has been the standard in the Hamptons for as long as I can remember,” says Robert Bakes of designers Bakes & Kropp. Interior designer Barbara Feldman agrees. “I think there is a classic, timeless beauty and an elegance associated with white marble that will never go out of style, especially in more formal and traditional kitchens and baths. White marble has been the fallback material for a long, long time. And Carrara marble has grey veining that blends well with stainless steel appliances and fixtures.” But is installing white marble in your kitchen practical? Like all natural materials, white marble requires more care than manmade alternatives. Marble is actually super compressed, crystallized calcium carbonate, also known as chalk. It is porous and soft compared to other stones. And it doesn’t play well with many ingredients found in a working kitchen. Acid—a splash of spaghetti sauce, a drip of lemon juice—reacts with calcium carbonate and etches the surface. Etching is permanent, more akin to a scratch than a stain. Even any cleaning products and even water can leave marks, rings, and stains on marble. (The porous marble absorbs the water.) However, marble ages beautifully and imperfections give it character.

Of course, none of this matters if you’re more likely to make reservations than risotto. Some kitchens in the Hamptons are practically never used. If you don’t cook much, then go ahead and install an acre of snowy marble. Designer Austin Handler of Mabley-Handler says, “For typical Hamptons summer house homeowners who may use their kitchens sparingly, many are willing to trade away the potential problems for a desirable esthetic.” If you’re an enthusiastic cook, and you’re worried about spills and stains, your marble counters must be regularly sealed. Robert Bakes reports, “The sealants used for marble are a lot more durable these days, though it’s impossible to completely prevent staining.” You could also choose a honed finish rather than polished. Honed stone is not shiny, so an etched mark is much less noticeable. But you’ll still have to make sure to clean up your counters carefully as you cook, wiping up spills ASAP, and use cutting boards. Another idea is to choose a suitably pale alternative, such as white granite or white quartz. Robert Bakes says, “Visibly natural looking, genuine white veined marble can’t truly be replicated, but when a client is particularly nervous of stains and marks, quartz is a viable alternative. Caesarstone for example produce some very marble-like effects, and the quartz finish is very durable. As a company we assess each client’s

needs on a per job basis; those that have a fear of staining will be steered towards alternatives, those who appreciate the wonderful aging of natural stone will be comfortable with a natural material.” Austin Handler says that for customers who only want a natural material, there’s a granite that offers that classic Hamptons white kitchen look. “It’s known by several different names, depending on where the vendor is sourcing it from. We’ve heard it called Vermont White, Super White, and White Fantasy. It’s a quartzite granite that has the general look and feel of Carrara marble, a mix of white and grey (with slightly more grey, and slightly larger veining), but with the resiliency of granite. It’s the one stone that we’ve come across that offers the best of both worlds: a natural material with that classic Hamptons white kitchen look, without marble’s softness and sensitivity to wear and tear.” Barbara Feldman says she loves quartz, but another interesting alternative is poured cement. “It is usable on both floors and counters, can be fabricated in any thickness, stained almost any color, and is durable, but should be sealed to minimize staining, especially on countertops.” So if you love the look and feel of white marble, be aware that it stains easily, but also consider fuss-free alternatives. The choice is yours.

BAKED EARTH SIEBERT & RICE’S TERRACOTTA GARDEN POTS FROM ITALY ARE CULT OBJECTS IN THE HAMPTONS AND BEYOND BY ELLA ABRAMS
U
nless you’re a landscape designer or an architect or a committed gardener, you may not have heard of Siebert & Rice, but chances are you’ve seen their elegant terracotta pots from Tuscany. On the East End of Long Island, one need look no further than Meadow Lane, in Southampton, where they are a standard feature of the loveliest gardens.You can also spot them at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Botanical Garden, Lomgwood Gardens, and The Cloisters. The company’s most sought-after item, the Artisan Rolled Rim pot, thirty-six inches in diameter, sells out early in the season and currently has a waiting list, making it the horticultural equivalent of a Birkin Bag. Why all the hoo ha? For starters, each pot is built freehand using the coil method and takes nearly a month to produce. They come from the Tuscan hilltown of Impruneta, just south of Florence, where the local clay is a miracle of geology. Because it is

unusually high in iron and calcium, it can be fired at extremely high temperatures for as long as a week without cracking. The terracotta—from the Italian, meaning baked earth—emerges from the kiln ready to withstand extreme weather. Neither snow nor ice nor rain will cause it to break. And it is this clay that the town’s diminishing population of master artisans use to build the handmade vessels and roof tiles for which Impruneta has been known since the Middle Ages. The business came about through happenstance. In the summer of 1994, Siebert and Rice found themselves sharing a villa in Tuscany. Siebert had left a job in high finance to raise children and Rice was a tax attorney. By chance, both women were casting about for a business project that wouldn’t prove all-consuming. One morning, Rice proposed a reconnaissance to the pottery workshops of Impruneta. When Siebert, who used to collect Arts and Crafts pottery, clapped eyes on the roseate urns, amphorae, and lemon tree pots

that were scattered about a potter’s studio, she saw an opportunity. “At that time, very few nurseries were importing handmade terracotta pots from Italy,” she explained from her office in Short Hills, New Jersey. “All they had were the cheap mass-produced orange-y kind.” Which is to say, the kind that chip easily and must be dragged indoors as winter approaches lest they develop craze lines. In fact, even glazed terracotta is prone to cracking when exposed to freezing temperatures. But pots from Impruneta, being frostfree, needn’t be moved. Season after season, they become part of the landscape in an organic way. Rice shared Siebert’s vision, but when they tried to place an order, the artisans waved them off, back down the hill. “They were used to dealing with big garden centers in Europe,” Siebert explained, “and they took us for American housewives.” Instead of doing the sensible thing and spending the afternoon drinking Chianti, Siebert got talking to the American Embassy

in Rome. The next day the new business partners returned to Impruneta. Before the brothers could say Arrivederci, Rice told them when the truck she’d hired to collect their order was expected to arrive. Back in the States, they researched high-end garden shops and nervously awaited delivery of their goods. (“When we left Impruneta, we had no idea if we’d ever see those pots again,” recalled Siebert.) Three months later, a truck pulled up in front of her home. Rather like old-time tinkers, they loaded up Rice’s station wagon with their wares and called on such design world notables as Bunny Williams, who became one of their first clients. Just a year later, they presented their first collection at the New York Flower Show, where it took Best in Show.The award launched the company into the garden design world, attracting the attention of some of the distinguished names in the industry. Even Martha Stewart took notice. A frost-proof terracotta pot? It seemed hard to credit and yet it was true. Today the pair have just brought out the latest additions to their American Collection, three Impruneta-produced pots that were designed by the esteemed Swedish landscape architecture firm, Oehme van Sweden. Previous commissions include pots designed by Hamptons notables Jack Lenor Larsen and the late Robert Dash. They’ve also released a pot to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the New York Botanical Society. The artisans, it turned out, have long been accustomed to working from foreigners’ drawings. About fifteen years ago, Seibert had a call from the Biltmore Estate, asking if any of the studios her company dealt with could reproduce the Estate’s nineteenth-century urns. Rice promised to relay the request. A short while later she had a reply. “Not only can we reproduce them,” her contact at the M.I.T.A.L. workshop assured her, “but we have the original molds.”

AN EXPERT’S ADVICE ON GETTING PAINT RIGHT
oncerning the difficult question of color, once wrote Edith Wharton, it is safe to say that the fewer colors used in a room, the more pleasing and restful the result will be.” More than a century later, the question remains as vexed and contentious as ever. No wonder so many of us take refuge in the comfort of neutrals, those reassuring earth tones that are the equivalent of a soothing murmur. How to create a color scheme that works? We spoke to color consultant Amy Wax who offers her best tips below. Define your boundaries. “Do you want the space to be bright and energizing? Cozy and introspective?” Deciding on the emotional tone of a room, says Wax, allows you to group colors into categories. ”If you’re decorating a study, for example, you might choose a historic palate in which the colors are more muted than an exuberant modern one.” Consider wall color in context. “People often

think that paint will make a room shine all on its own. But really, the colors needs to work in harmony with the space. Depending on the other elements of the room--the quality of light, the textiles--a color that seems dull at first glance can have a calming effect.” Go beyond beige. Instead, consider what Wax calls “nearly neutrals”--primary colors mixed with grey or beige or another neutral tone. Although such hues are richer and have a stronger presence than standard neutrals, Wax finds them extremely versatile. She’s especially partial to grey with a hint of pink, blue, lavender or green. Turn down the volume. According to Wax, people who have chosen colors in overlit shops often seem too bright when you see them at home.To compensate for this effect,Wax suggests going with a softer, quieter tone. Splash out on superior paint. Premium paints within Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Paints of

Europe and Farrow and Ball contain a high degree of pigments which allows them to bring colors up to their true values. Moreover, such paints tend to wear better than cheap stuff. Notes Wax, “The science of paint has changed dramatically in recent years. There’s been a move toward healthier products that require less ventilation. Some paints are even self-priming; others are washable or “scrubbable” as its called, when dry, which means no more water stains. Paints that previously would have required four coats now go on beautifully with a single coat.” Think big. When deciding on a color, ditch the paint chips and sample a large area. “A common mistake is to put too small or too transparent a sample on the wall.” Wax’s method is to prime a 30 x 40 sheet of oak tag and give it two coats of paint. This allows her “to really see the color in context. It always surprises me how people will agonize over this color or that only to put up such a small amount that it serves no purpose. I mean, think about it. Small or large, you’re going to have to repaint anyway.”

PERENNIAL PLEASURES BY ANNE HALPIN
P
erennial flowers are favorites of so many gardeners and landscape designers for good reason. Unlike annuals like impatiens and geraniums, perennials come back year after year to bring their lovely colors to the garden. Better yet, many of them grow from single plants into clumps, and reward you with ever more bloom. The downside of perennials is that most of them bloom for just two or three weeks, and then are green mounds of leaves the rest of the growing season.To have color in the garden all season, the classic solution is to plant flowers that bloom at different times and carefully plan a succession of color from spring to fall. As some plants finish blooming, others are beginning. That takes a lot of planning, and extensive knowledge of plants and when they bloom. But there’s an easier way to have a colorful flower garden all summer without the bother of planting anew every spring. Some perennials bloom for many weeks and including them in your landscape will give you long term color. If you cut off the old spent flowers, the plants will bloom longer, even all summer (find some tips at the end of this article). Here are some long bloomers for long-lasting color. If you’re a daisy lover, you will enjoy the cheerful daisylike yellow blossoms of Coreopsis. The soft yellow flowers of the aptly named Coreopsis Moonbeam bloom for a month and more in summer. The plants are easy to grow in a sunny spot, and the flowers

bloom in abundance on thin stems. When there seem to be more of the little brown buttons of spent flowers on the stems, you can stimulate a new round of bloom by shearing back the plants by about a quarter or a third of their height with scissors or hedge clippers. The plants will produce new flower buds in short order. If you like bright golden yellow, grow Coreopsis grandiflora instead.When this one slows down, cutting off the old flower stems at the base will do the trick. Another excellent candidate for the nonstop perennial garden are daylilies. Not all daylilies, though. As the name implies, each daylily flower blooms for just a single day. But each flowering stem produces several, and they open in succession. When the last flower on the stem has gone, you cut the stem back to its base. For many daylilies, when the last flowering stem is gone, so are the flowers until next year. But some varieties, notably those with “Stella” as part of their name (the original was Stella de Oro) and those that have “Returns” in their name (such as Happy Returns and Rosy Returns) will produce brand new flower stems, with a new crop of blooms, when the old stems are cut back. Just cut them off at the base. One of the more interesting plants in the perennial pantheon is Sedum. The sedums best known in

flower gardens grow as a clump of thick, fleshy stems and leaves and produce their flowers as heads of tiny florets. When they first develop they resemble heads of broccoli. In late summer, these green clusters of flower buds begin to lighten to light green, then very gradually they turn light pink and slowly deepen, over a span of weeks, toward a salmony bronze color (in the variety Autumn Joy) or hot pink (in newer varieties like Neon and Brilliant). These flowers light up the late summer garden and last for many weeks. As fall settles in, the color deepens further, eventually becoming brown. Some gardeners leave the old flower stalks in the garden all winter, for their sculptural interest. Perhaps the most carefree of all summer flowers are the group of roses collectively called landscape roses. Knock Out roses are the best known. These plants will bloom happily all summer, all by themselves. All you need to do is water them in dry weather, and fertilize occasionally. Including these long bloomers in your flower garden, or even building a garden around them, will reward you with reliable color year after year, without having to replant your garden every spring.
