Southampton Village Home, Honed from Experience Southampton. When you design and build for some of the most discriminating people on such notable Hampton lanes such as Meadow, Great Plains, First Neck, Coopers Neck and Gibson, you learn a few things. So when it was time to perform a major renovation on his own residence, one of the Hamptons most respected luxury builders engaged Barnes & Coy for some of the design elements while incorporating many of those incredible finishes and amenities that he used elsewhere, creating an amazing residence for himself and his family. Spread out over 6,000 sq. feet on three levels of living space, this five bedroom traditional offers an incredible experience found in much larger and pricier venues. The intimate entry hall ushers you towards the living room and den/media room both warmed by fireplaces. Upstairs the expansive master suite features his and her walk in closets, separate dressing room with vanity, large bath with steam shower and her office with private deck. Two bedrooms and large hall bath complete the second floor. The lower level with 10 foot ceilings is a sanctuary unto itself with complete gym, sauna, staff bedroom, full bath, wine cellar by Miles Jaffe, cedar closet and large playroom. The infrastructure got an updating along with the rest and now features a 9 zone HVAC system powered by town gas, town water, a generator as well as sound system with Niles touch pads that supplies audio both in and outside the house. And the outside, with oversight by Edmund Hollander, was not neglected with a Tortorella 20 X 40 heated Gunite pool, separate spa, retractable awning and outdoor kitchen complete with Viking appliances including smoker oven, 2 burner range, refrigerator and a Capital 54” BBQ. Showcase. Following a long stretch of pandemic related restrictions, we are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. With more people being vaccinated, everyone is ready for a much different summer than last year. With many still staying close to home, it should be a banner season. As we approach the holiday weekend, let’s also take a moment to remember and honor our fallen military heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in freedom. We are forever grateful to all of them. Featured on this month’s front cover, Susan Breitenbach of The Corcoran Group presents a special oceanfront residence on iconic Meadow Lane in Southampton. Set on nearly four acres of ocean frontage on this most famous street, this home features expansive views of the ocean, dunes and amazing bayside sunsets. This represents an incredible investment opportunity for a new owner at this enviable location. Also in this issue, be sure to check out Dawn Watson’s “Summer Fun 2021,” for a curated list of great outdoor activities to enjoy this coming summer; Adrianna Nava’s Marketwatch report, detailing the continued strength of sales here in the Hamptons; Katya Russell’s designer showcase, “Let the Sunshine In,” featuring Amalia Graziani’s stylish gut renovation of a dated Amagansett cottage; Hannah Selinger’s “East End Eats,” for the latest dish on the South Fork restaurant scene; Kate C. Patchett’s spotlight on some of the best summer camps in the Hamptons; Anne Halpin’s “Plant a Potager,” a traditional French vegetable and herb garden surrounded by flowers; Richard Lewin’s “Balancing Salt and Fresh Water,” featuring the Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation and their work to protect beloved Georgica Pond; Laura Euler’s Realty Check, for the latest scoop on the Hamptons real estate scene; plus much more. paid for it in 2005. Back then, it was the most expensive home ever sold in New York State. The property first made headlines in 1996, selling to commodities trader David Campbell for a record setting $10 million. Campbell commissioned architect Francis Fleetwood to build the house, which was completed in 1999. Campbell then put the estate on the market in 2000, asking $50 million. (The name comes from a forest fire around the turn of the twentieth century that denuded the point.) The property offers 2,000 feet of frontage on Georgica Pond and views to the ocean. The house is a massive 18,000 square feet with eight bedrooms; part of it is a self-contained four bedroom and 4.5 bath guest wing with its own balcony and sitting room. Outside, there’s a tennis court with pavilion; pool, hot tub and waterfall; professional greenhouse; boat house; dock on a small beach; and a pretty waterside gazebo. We’re also slightly confused about what’s going on with the former Donald Trump Jr house. As previously reported, Don Jr and girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle supposedly sold their Kellis Way, Bridgehampton, house off-market for $8.14 million. Crazy price, as they paid $4.4 million for it in 2019. James Giugliano and Shawn Egan of Nest Seekers were reportedly the brokers on the deal. Nobody has seen an official transfer, so many brokers are wondering about it. Then we saw screenshots of a rental offering on the brokers’ site. As featured on our February front cover, the property offers 3.32 acres on the ocean side of Meadow Lane, with 200 feet of oceanfront and sunset views to the bay. There isn’t a tennis court, but there’s room for one if the buyer wants. No wonder the property, repped by Douglas Elliman’s Michaela Keszler and Madeline Hult Elghanayan was snapped up in just weeks. IT TAKES A WATER MILL VILLAGE We’re not entirely sure what’s going on with the next property. 794 Montauk Highway, Water Mill, is 6.4 acres of vacant land (immediately east of the Water Mill Shoppes). Since 1986 or so, the land has had various planned uses, including a supermarket. Most recently the plan was a project known as Water Mill Village. HAMPTON HABITUÉS GOOD NEWS GOSSIP ABOUT OUR NOTABLE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS
I
t’s been a tough year, we’re not gonna lie. It’s good to see the summertime and the sun shining again as we navigate this changed world.
AND … ACTION! With our pause abatement in sight, expect to see a logjam of movies coming out in the warmer months that have been held for release, in some cases for more than a year. One of which is Scarlett Johansson’s “Black Widow.” The Marvel Cinematic Universe film is scheduled to be released on Disney+ streaming and in cinemas just after July 4 weekend, after having been pushed from its original theatrical release date last May. Created way back in 1964 by Stan Lee, the character Natalia Alianovna “Natasha Romanoff” Romanova, aka “Black Widow,” was introduced as a Russian spy and Iron Man antagonist. In the nearly 60 years since, she’s defected to America and joined the spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. as a femme fatale and heroine. In this solo adventure, the former KGB agent, who sacrifices herself for the good of the universe in “Avengers: Endgame,” must deal with her complicated history and the broken relationships. It’s rumored that this film will mark the Amagansett resident’s final appearance as the titular character. Next up for her, a voice role in the animated film “Sing 2,” slated for a Christmas release. THE END, AGAIN Though we’re so sad to see “Younger” ride off into the sunset at the end of its seventh season, now streaming on Paramount+, we’re happy to see that it’s going out with style — with yet another Montauk appearance no less. In the series’ final season, the Darren Star-produced show — starring Sutton Foster, Peter Hermann, Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar, Nico Tortorella and Molly Bernard — finds Liza and her pals at loose ends as they try to figure out who they are and what they want out of life. In episode four, “Risky Business,” the now-seasoned book editor gets her shot at catching a few waves

of happiness with a sexy pro surfer during another momentous visit to The End. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to tune in for some glorious views of sand, sea and our gorgeous island. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? This summer also marks the end of an era for the Kardashians, who have been frequently seen out and about out East, most notably in “Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons.”

HEALTHY APPETITE Our favorite famous French chef, Eric Ripert, has a new project that we can’t wait to sink our teeth into. The chef and co-owner of Manhattan’s tripleMichelin-starred Le Bernadin has written an allvegetable cookbook. Yum!
Their long-running series, “Keeping Up with The Kardashians,” closes this year after a final 20th season. Word on the street is that Sag Harbor- and Amagansett property owner / Bravo BMOC Andy Cohen will air a special reunion catchup, a la “Real Housewives” style, with most of the family members. Set to air before the summer ends, the show is expected to includes clips and comments from the past two decades of all things Kardashian. DOUBLE LIFE With so much shut down due to the pandemic, the talented Tovah Feldshuh decided to make lemonade out of her time off. The Broadway, television and movie star used her time to write “Lilyville: Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I’ve Played.” The memoir tells the story of the talented actor’s life through the evolution of her relationship with her mother, Lillian Kaplan Feldshuh, who died in 2014. Fans will be thrilled to read some inside scoop about some of Feldshuh’s most iconic roles, from her big break as “Yentl” on Broadway to playing Israeli Prime Minister Gold Meir in “Golda’s Balcony.” Packed with behind-the-scenes anecdotes and personal memories, the autobiography is sure to please. But that’s not all, Tovah — who was named Teri Sue by her mother at birth but opted to use her Hebrew name for her career — has also written a television series based on the book. As written, she will play the parts of both mother and daughter. Double the roles, double the acting fun!

Named one of the Best Cookbooks of the Year by Publishers Weekly, “Vegetable Simple” features more than 200 pages of simply delicious vegetarian recipes by the Sag Harbor resident. Adding to its allure, the book is illustrated with stunning photos by renowned lensman Nigel Parry, whose images have set the standards for so many magazine covers out East. SAG HARBOR WEST? In other foodie news, this summer celebrity chef Laurent Tourondel, who also hails from France by the way, is moving west! Well, maybe not personally, but his business is. It turns out that Tourondel’s hugely popular LT Burger restaurant is opening up on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. That west-of-the-canal location, which is sure to make a big splash, comprises three East End eateries for Tourondel, who also owns LT Burger and Sag Pizza in Sag Harbor. It’s a smart move for the famed restaurateur — with its newly revamped Main Street and steadily rising property values, we’re predicting that the village is set to become the newest Hamptons hot spot.

MARKET AT HISTORICALLY HIGH LEVELS HAMPTONS PROPERTY VALUES CONTINUE TO INCREASE AS 2021 UNFOLDS BY ADRIANNA NAVA
A
s the 2020 season drew to a close, Hamptons’ buyers, sellers and agents were all eager to learn where the market would
head in 2021. Last year felt like, and statistically was, a rollercoaster, and 2021 promised to be a head start toward social and economic normalcy. Would 2020’s buyers pack their bags and head home in 2021? Listing supply decreased 18% through Q1 2021. Though early March saw a small injection of new listings, week to week throughout the quarter new listings were mostly in steady decline, while the number of properties going into contract continued to exceed the activity of recent pre-Covid years. Going into April, there was a 121% increase in new listings week to week, but it remains to be seen whether this second injection of inventory will continue long enough, or be enough, to satisfy buyer appetites. In the first quarter, it wasn’t. Utilizing available data, Hamptons Market Data examined properties that closed in Q1 2021 and had previously traded within the last 5 years. We then pulled out the properties that had little to no improvements beyond certain aesthetics such as refreshed paint, stain, fixtures or plantings, made between the previous purchase and closing this

MARKETWATCH Brown also represented the seller as a buyer when the home was purchased in January 2017, acknowledging that at the time of purchase, his client was getting a good deal at $1.75M. “It looks like a lot was done since then, but it was mostly paint and design,” Brown explained. “The home was new in 2008,” he continued. “The outside is where we were able to make the greatest impact,” said John Bjornen of Bjornen Design, who redesigned the home prior to its most recent sale. “The house was in great condition, but the orange hue of the pre-dipped shingles challenged the curb appeal. Staining the shingles a rich gray took it out of the suburbs and put it back into Sag Harbor’s

historic district. Most importantly, we kept the color palette consistent from the outside through the interiors of the house,” Bjornen continued. “We did replace the fireplaces and installed marble and stucco facades,” he confessed, “but I didn’t touch the bathrooms or kitchen and we didn’t reconfigure any rooms. It was a bit more than just paint, but we didn’t need to renovate.” With renovated properties coming in at an average increase of 115% in property value, and new construction showing a 255% price improvement average, without knowing and factoring for the investment amounts made to develop the properties, it is difficult to determine whether investors did any better than the average homeowner transacting in the recent market. “It’s not just land that has increased, the cost of building has also gone up,” said Thomas Cavallo of Douglas Elliman. More listings coming on the market may also not immediately translate into softening prices. The type of listing still matters when it comes to value percent increases, perhaps more so now than in 2020. “When we listed 12 Deer Trail Road in Southampton at the end of summer, we didn’t get as many showings as I had thought we would,” said Jennifer Wisner of Brown Harris Stevens. The seller was a builder who used high quality finishes and lived in the home after it was completed in 2018. “Buyers had been gravitating toward Southampton Village in 2020 and I think the location in Southampton North was a bit of a turnoff,” Wisner continued.

HAUTE SPOT “PEACEMAN” AND HIS “UNSTOPPABLE” FATHER BY DAWN WATSON
T
here’s no shortage of colorful characters here in the Hamptons. But there’s only one (that we know of) who personally claims the iconic title of “superhero.”
all to read in the book “Unstoppable: Siggi B. Wilzig’s Astonishing Journey from Auschwitz Survivor and Penniless Immigrant to Wall Street Legend” by Joshua M. Greene.
That’s Ivan Wilzig, aka “Peaceman.” The high-flying former banker, who also calls himself “Sir Ivan,” is perhaps best known for his outlandish exploits — such as donning an oversized peace sign necklace and cape while appearing on reality television shows and producing techno music videos of himself singing iconic peace songs — and outrageous parties at his giant moat-encircled mansion in Water Mill.
Getting his father’s biography out there has been a lifelong passion for Wilzig, who says that he and his brother, sister and late mother kept an archive of Siggi’s milestones and accomplishments. Inspired by his role model’s fortitude and tenacity, Wilzig says that his dad is the reason for so many of his own life choices, and that he’s overjoyed to share his rags-to-riches story with the world.
But there’s much more to the man than just over-the-top adventures and escapades. A philanthropist and advocate for social justice, Wilzig comes by his desire for harmony honestly. His father, Siegbert “Siggi” Wilzig, a Holocaust survivor and self-made success dedicated his life to speaking out against hatred and injustice. The senior Wilzig, who survived Auschwitz, Mauthausen and more than one death march, arrived in America with the equivalent of a few dollars in his pocket and 98 pounds on his emaciated frame. Through grit, determination, hard work and instinct, he built his own version of the American Dream.
Ivan, Siggi, and Alan Wilzig
During the span of his lifetime, the self-taught Siggi built a $4 billion empire in oil and banking, received honorary Doctorates of Law from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University and Hofstra University Law School, and became a founding Director and Fellow of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he endowed the Siggi B. Wilzig Center for Banking Law. A recipient of Israel’s Prime Minister’s Club Award medal, he was also founding member of the Holocaust Memorial Museum Council in Washington, gave testimony for the Steven Spielberg Shoah Foundation and received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Wilzig, who passed away in 2003 from multiple myeloma, also endowed the Wilzig Hospital at the Jersey City Medical Center, the Daughters of Miriam Center and the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center. His meteoric rise from penniless uneducated immigrant to the person whom Nobel Peace Prize Winner Elie Wiesel called “a man of courage and faith” had a profound effect on his son. And now, Wilzig’s extraordinary life story is being shared for

“The book epitomizes his resilience, hope, and coming back from the worst place imaginable,” he says. “My father had a grammar school education. Everything he did was self-taught. What he accomplished was like the equivalent of becoming a brain surgeon without ever having taken Biology 101.” From his music — which includes electronic dance music covers of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and The Youngbloods “Get Together,” among others — to his work with The Peaceman Foundation — a non-profit that battles hatred, violence and post-traumatic stress disorder — Wilzig has endeavored to take up the mantle in continuing his father’s legacy. “Everything I’ve done has been inspired by this,” he says. “My mission is peace of mind for all humankind.” With “Unstoppable” now published, Wilzig says that he hopes that the message of his father’s heroic commitment to peace, love and justice lives on. “He would be so proud to see this. For him, my biggest hope that the book becomes globally read like ‘The Diary of Anne Frank,’” says Wilzig. “Because in the end, it’s important to remember that kindness and love is contagious. If we do that, the world would be a better place.”

A NEWCOMER TO THE HAMPTONS REAL ESTATE SCENE BRINGS AN AMAGANSETT COTTAGE INTO THE LIGHT BY KATYA RUSSELL
A
s a girl growing up in California in the 1990s, Amalia Graziani, the founder of Noor Property Group, loved to watch her serial-renovator father blow out walls. Today she ascribes her confidence in the building trade to
that formative experience. Certainly, it emboldened Graziani to try her hand at residential wall-bashing and other stereotypically male pursuits. Before the advent of HGTV, home renovation was widely considered a man’s game. But the success of celebrity designer-builders like Joanna Gaines and Leanne Ford has changed public perception and encouraged other women to follow in their bootsteps. Count Graziana among them. For the last several years, she has been slowly adding properties in the Hamptons and in upstate New York to her small but exquisite real estate portfolio of houses she buys and renovates. It began as an experiment, in 2016, with a cottage on a leafy street, south of Montauk Highway, in Amagansett. By all accounts, the place was destined for the wrecking ball. Low ceilings, wall-to-wall carpet, small, inefficient windows, and a warren of close, dark rooms made the house feel claustrophobic. The amount of structural work to be done was daunting, to say nothing of the cost of land in that choice location. But
DESIGNER SHOWCASE
Graziani, who has an M.S. in real estate development and architecture from Columbia University and is an MBA candidate at NYU Stern, had a pretty good sense as to what she was in for. More to the point, she saw the property as a strategic purchase with strong potential that would serve as a design lab and eventually generate rental income. She made an offer. The renovation took a year, during which time she raised the ceiling, a move that both gave the place height and airiness and style, as it revealed the contours of the pitched rooflines. To highlight that feature, she installed on the ceiling of most rooms white beadboard overlaid

THE MAGIC OF WATER INTEGRATING WATER FEATURES INTO YOUR GARDEN BY ANNE HALPIN
W
ater animates a garden and brings it to life. Moving water brings its quiet music as it gurgles and splashes or shoots into the air and falls back into a pool below. Still water is hypnotic—a mirror that reflects the sky and trees overhead, then ripples and dances to scatter the image when touched by a breeze, only to re-form it once more. Water is an entirely delightful addition to the garden, especially when used with its inherent natural characteristics in mind. In nature, water is drawn by gravity to run downhill and pool in low spots. For the most successful design, use these inherent qualities when incorporating water features into the garden. Locate a pool or pond in a low spot where water would naturally collect. A pool on top of a slope will look somehow strange and out of place, no matter how carefully you shape it or how beautifully you plant around it. But placed at the foot of the hill, the pool will make a lot more sense. Similarly, a cascade needs to run from high ground to low; it would seem odd running across level ground. Water, both moving and still, is an essential element in Japanese gardens. Water can bring magic to your garden, too. Here are some guidelines for incorporating water features into your garden. Still Water: If you want to have a reflecting pool, be sure to locate where it will have something to reflect. Still water mirrors the clouds above and nearby plants, too. The glistening surface draws and holds your attention. A garden pool need not be deep to work its magic. Unless you want to have fish, your garden pool can be shallow — 2 feet is plenty. A shallow pool is less work to maintain than a deep one. A pool with a dark bottom or liner will have the most reflective surface, and the dark depths below will look mysterious. On the other hand, light colored undersurface lets you see right to the bottom, which can be a design feature in itself if you have a mosaic or other design on the bottom. You can add interest to a pool by including statuary, plants in or near it, or a fountain.
66
A pool in a partly shaded location will be easiest to manage. A location in full sun will encourage algae growth. A pool in a spot surrounded by lots of trees will fill up with leaves, which will have to be removed before they decay. Moving Water: Moving water animates the garden with its motion and musical sounds. Moving water can be as subtle as a slow trickle from a bamboo waterspout into a stone basin, or as dramatic as a fountain shooting a jet toward the sky. The quietest way to introduce moving water into your landscape is a simple waterspout that trickles into a catch basin below. There are single unit, wall mounted, or freestanding waterspouts that emanate from the head of a lion or cherub or other source and fall into a basin below. You can find these pieces in natural stone, cast or cultured stone, or lighter weight resin. There are also small bubblers to install in large olive jar or urn. All these devices use pumps to recirculate the water through the system.
You can find a wide variety of fountains, too, in many sizes and designs. A fountain captures the interplay of water and light. It can be small and subtle or big and dramatic, but it is not supposed to look like a natural feature. A fountain demands your attention. Its sound and motion draw you to it. Consider viewing angles when choosing a location for a fountain. A jet or spray is sublime when backlit by the sun. Also pay some heed to sightlines. How high and at what angle, should the water rise into the air in order to be visible from your chosen vantage point? Be mindful of scale and proportion, too. The basin or pool into which the water falls should be in scale with the rest of the landscape. Many styles of pools and fountains are available. Find one that works in the space you have available, and that complements the overall style of your landscape and your house. Then enjoy the magic of water.

THE PORTRAITS OF LINDSAY MORRIS BY HEATHER BUCHANAN
W
hat does it feel like to be seen, truly seen? The power of portraits resides not in the perfection of the subject but in the revelation of their true self. Sag Harbor based photographer Lindsay Morris is known for her incredibly vibrant and poignant work documenting everything from Little Leaguers to Rikers inmates gardening, her work appearing in TIME, the New York Times Magazine, Scientific American, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire and Elle. While her subjects are diverse, the honesty of her portrayals is universal. Morris describes her artistic process, “It’s exhilarating and intimidating at the same time. There is a vulnerability on both sides of the camera, and you affect each other. Ultimately it’s the way the photographer makes the subject feel that elicits the signature look.” Morris grew up with an ideation of photography stemming from National Geographic where the appropriate subjects were something far away and foreign. But for her compelling work, she draws from her own personal experience. “I choose what moves me in my daily life,” she says. Her photo essay of the camp for gender non-conforming youth stemmed from her son (turned into the book You are You and part of a new project) and the series of local farmers from her role as photo editor of Edible Magazine. Morris’ process is one that requires time: time to get to know her subjects, time to earn their trust, time to make them forget she is even there with her camera. She delicately peels off the layers of make up and masks and bravado to get to their core. “They trust I won’t
68
misrepresent them,” she explains. Her recent project Meet Your Neighbor, now online at the Townsend Gallery, pulled her out of her own comfort zone, propelling her to get to know her neighbors some of whom she had never met over her 27 years in the area. “People look at their phones and put up their hedges and we’ve all sort of disconnected,” Morris comments, “I became enthralled with how different my neighbors are and I wondered what their houses looked like on the inside and what was their day-to-day ritual.” Her approached stemmed from a single question, “If you were to abandon your home with just one object in your hand what would you take?” Thus began a meaningful conversation and connection resulting in a portrait of the neighbor paired with their object as well as a brief audio comment. “People really want to be heard and tell their stories,” Morris
comments, “I was surprised how much time they were willing to invest to talk to a stranger.” The objects ranged from an umbilical cord to a mother’s ashes kept in a tequila bottle to a tiny violin and a feather. The emotions ranged from joy to sorrow with five of her subjects having passed away since the portrait due to old age, cancer, or suicide. “They all gave so much thought into selecting their objects,” says Morris, “They went so deeply into themselves to tell their story.” We see Maymette at 102 with her great granddaughter Emma with a picture of her daughter who died young. Then there’s Ruby and Allen, Ruby choosing four tiny dresses she made by hand for her dolls when she was little and Allen’s nostalgia for his father’s shaving kit in which he keeps props for his magic tricks. Each of these is paired with a series of floating houses, reflecting how the environment has changed over time in the Hamptons. “It’s not that these were great examples of architecture,” Morris explains, “But they do harken back to a time that doesn’t exist anymore and I want us to remember and think about the space we take up.” Through the course of the project, Morris has considered it an honor to witness these stories and lives. “When I photograph my neighbors and present them with the portrait, it is the ultimate gift.”

PLANT A POTAGER BY ANNE HALPIN
G
rowing some of your own vegetables and herbs is a rewarding summer pastime and a great project to do with kids. Taking care of plants is enjoyable – even weeding can be a meditative experience. Spending some time in the fresh air and sunshine is a great break from staring at a screen indoors for work or school. And you get to eat the results of your efforts. Vegetable gardens are usually laid out in rows, like miniature farm fields, or in rectangular beds with paths between them. But there are other ways. For something different this year, why not make a potager?

A potager is a traditional French kitchen garden, where succulent vegetables, savory herbs and colorful flowers grow together in happy abandon. The potager is continually harvested and replanted to supply the needs of the kitchen throughout the growing season, including fresh bouquets to put on your dining table. This kind of compact, informal garden is perfect for gardeners who love to cook, and cooks who appreciate having the finest, freshest ingredients available right outside the door. It’s a real joy to go out to the garden and pick a basketful of your own fresh food for lunch or dinner. You can choose varieties that produce the juiciest tomatoes, the garden
Ideally your property is fenced for deer. Choose a sunny location for your potager and enclose it with a wood fence such as a picket fence that will let in plenty of light. A simple design can divide a square or circular plot into quadrants or wedges with walkways between them, of bricks or stones, or even wood chips or mulch. A fence doesn’t take up a lot of space and can provide support for tall growers like sunflowers and morning glories or climbing beans. Within each section of the garden, arrange plants in decorative patterns to follow the shape of the bed. Consider

GARDENING
BY JENN NEUBAUER Strawberries are not only delicious but they are versatile as well. When planting Strawberries we like to utilize the method of container planting. As a perennial plant, Strawberries if put in the ground will continue to spread in the area you choose to plant them. When you grow Strawberries in a vessel or hanging basket you get the joy of keeping them contained and enjoying their harvest. There are few plants that say summer quite like a Strawberry. We enjoy them on salads, making them into jams, infused into a cocktail or just as a daytime snack. Hoping this DIY planter inspires you to add Strawberries to your garden this year. Enjoy!
Here are the three types of classifications and some more common varieties of Strawberries. Everbearing - These will produce fruit throughout the entire growing season — a smaller delicious variety. As long as there is around 12 hours of daylight they will begin the production of berries. Types of Everbearing: Merlan, Loran, Alpine, Tarpan (great for containers) Day Neutral - These produce fruit 3 times per season or 3 sets of fruit: June, July & August. Types of Day Neutral: Albion, Elsanta, Elan
GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES • Three Terra Cotta Dish Planters. (I used three different sizes: 8.5”, 10.5” and 14.5”. • Organic Potting Soil • Gather your Organic Strawberry Plants (For this container I used 8 Plants) • Granular or Slow Release Fertilizer • Garden Gloves • Watering Can
TRANSPLANT YOUR STRAWBERRIES First stack your planters on top of one another to mark out the available space to transplant Strawberries into. To transplant your Strawberries you will want to remove them from their pot. Once removed you can gently squeeze the root base to release them. Place your Strawberry plants around the edge of the terra cotta dish making sure that the roots are completely covered by the soil. Water, water, water!
FILL YOUR CONTAINER Start by placing a piece of mesh or a piece of old screen over the holes on the bottom of the planters. This will prevent dirt from falling through. Next fill your vessels up ½ of the way with your Organic Soil. ADD IN YOUR FERTILIZER According to the directions on the back of your fertilizer add your fertilizer to your soil. I like to sprinkle it on top of the soil and use my hands to thoroughly mix it in.
84
COMPLETED STRAWBERRY PLANTER Place your planter in a spot with full sun and make sure it is well watered. You can fertilize your planter with an all-purpose fertilizer according to the instructions on the fertilizer.

SEASON OPENER THESE SEASONAL SOUTH FORK RESTAURANTS ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS BY HANNAH SELINGER
W
hat is the greatest joy of summer? It may just be the long-awaited reopening of the area’s best seasonal restaurants. Here are just a handful of the seasonal restaurants that are now open for business. Dust off your flip-flops and get ready for warm weather’s best dining options in the Hamptons. THE CROW’S NEST Opening two weeks before Memorial Day, this perfect Montauk space is back for its 12th season. Arrive before sunset and you’ll be treated to a light show on Lake Montauk. At dusk and beyond, carefully strung Edison bulbs over the restaurant’s pergolas provide delicate light. And don’t forget the food. The restaurant’s locally sourced menu draws its inspiration from the Mediterranean and beyond. MOBY’S Moby’s is the Hamptons gift that keeps on giving. In its incarnation, the seasonal restaurant was a popup in the Montauk parking lot adjacent to Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Café. In 2014, the restaurant moved to Pantigo Lane, in East Hampton, to the sprawling space that was once The Laundry. The restaurant called that space home for several seasons, until EMP Summer House took over. Moby’s spent a
summer on the water, at East Hampton Point, before returning to Pantigo. That’s where they will be this year, beginning in late April, serving coastal Italian cuisine in a cool, casual setting. BEACON There are few sunsets as magical as the one you catch from Beacon’s slim balcony — if you can get a table, that is. David Loewenberg’s Sag Harbor bistro on the water has been going strong for over two decades now, and the joy of eating there never subsides. Last summer, the restaurant offered reservations-only “sunset dinners,” a prix fixe, twocourse meal with the best view in town. Let’s hope that idea carries through to 2021.
HARBOR BISTRO In the Springs neighborhood of East Hampton, this seasonal restaurant reigns. Tucked into a marina, your dinner will include a peaceful view of the boats bobbing in the water at sunset. The restaurant will begin sit-down service on Memorial Day Weekend, though takeout is available before then. The restaurant’s nightly happy hour, from five to seven, features wine, cocktails, beer, and appetizers from $8 to $10. But you won’t want to miss out on the linguine with clams, made from bivalves caught right in East Hampton.
NAVY BEACH If you’re lucky enough to own a boat, you can pull right up to the rocky shores of Navy Beach, a seasonal Montauk restaurant on the bay that offers the best of both worlds: excellent food and excellent scenery. The 200-foot private beach that’s home to this iconic restaurant was once occupied by the U.S. Navy. Today, it’s the prime spot to grab a plate of Yunnan ribs (sticky, sweet, and hard to pass up), charred shishito peppers, and a jumbo lump crab cake with apple and chayote slaw.

f you are driving from The City to East Hampton Village or points farther east, you probably share the feeling with many others of “we are almost
there!” when you reach the traffic light on Montauk Highway in Wainscott. But that’s not all there is to Wainscott. The low profile, South of the Highway, hamlet has traditionally, and purposely, remained low key and, as much as possible, out of the limelight, despite being home to A-list celebrities and leaders of industry. Recent local breaking news stories have changed all that. South Fork Wind Farm’s proposal to bury a substantial cable under bucolic Beach Lane, Wainscott’s only public access to the Ocean
