HAUTE SPOT JULES FEIFFER DRAWS UPON HIS TALENTS
BY DAWN WATSON It's a lot. And there's more, including awards from The Writers Guild of America and the Outer Critics Circle, a George Polk Award, an Inkpot Award, an Obie Award, and special distinction from The Library of Congress for his "remarkable legacy." "The role I have been able to play at particular times to affect our politics and sensibilities has been a gift," he says, humbly, of his considerable contributions to the social and political fabric. Not one to rest on his laurels, the prolific changemaker, who jokes that he maintains "a 24hour workday ... with a few naps in between," has a slew of events slated for the summer.

First up is a pair of screenings and talks about the film Popeye at the Sag Harbor Cinema during the Memorial Day weekend. That feature-length musical comedy, which Feiffer wrote, was directed by Robert Altman and starred Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. The Keyes Gallery in Sag Harbor will be hosting an exhibition of Feiffer's work that will run concurrent with the event.
W
ith the stroke of his pen, Jules Feiffer has the ability to change the world. In fact, he's been doing just that, consistently, as well as professionally, for the past 70-plus years. And there's no sign of him slowing down any time soon. "I've known that I wanted to be a cartoonist from the time I was 3 or 4 years old," says the now-93year-old syndicated illustrator, who has been sharing his searing social and political commentary on the national stage since the 1940s and still draws every day. "It's something that I've not only gotten great joy from; it's also given me the opportunity to actually say something." The Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist, who lives on Shelter Island with his wife, JZ Holden,
is regarded as one of the most widely read satirists in the country. He's written more than 35 books, plays and screenplays and has seen his cartoons and illustrations regularly appear in such outlets as The Village Voice, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the London Observer, The New Yorker, Playboy, Esquire, and The Nation. Among his most notable achievements, Feiffer has been inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame; he's also written the Academy Award-winning animated short film Munro, the provocative and groundbreaking film, Carnal Knowledge, and the musical comedy feature-length film Popeye; as well as the stage plays Little Murders, Knock Knock, and Feiffer's People; and the books The Phantom Tollbooth, The Man in the Ceiling and Kill My Mother.
That same weekend, his work will hang in a group exhibition, "Once On This Island," curated by Margaret Garrett and in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Shelter Island Historical Society. The following month, he'll be giving a talk with author Robert Lipsyte at the Shelter Island Library. Looking to the future, Feiffer has two more children’s books that he's currently working on. One about a boy who is continually late for school and the other is about a kid who pretends that his finger is a gun. As evidenced by his massive body of work, they are both filled with outrageous exploits, a quick wit and Feiffer’s trademark joie de vivre. "I've always just wanted to do the work and I'm so grateful to still be doing it," he says, reflecting on his incredible success. "To my amazement, being able to realize these goals — even if I am half blind, stooped over and physically incapacitated in all sorts of ways ... I've had a wonderful, very happy life."

he Hamptons sales market continues its fevered pace. This month we can report on a million sale two million sales and one Sagaponack property last ask million now in contract. There are also several hotels and inns for sale and Mr. Million Dollar Listing yan Serhant expanding in the Hamptons.
YOU SAY POTATO, I SAY SOLD! Well in contract at least. The highest priced new listing in the past month or so was under contract before it even hit the market. 35 Potato oad and Daniels Lane in Sagaponack were listed by Christopher Covert and Chris Coleman at Compass. There are two separate parcels that add up to almost four acres which were marketed as a once in a generation opportunity to create a legacy estate compound by the sea. The otato oad property currently has a -s uare-foot seven-bedroom house along with feet of direct ocean frontage. But the
charms of the existing house almost certainly don t matter as the house will likely be hearing the siren song of the bulldozer before long. We ll be interested to see what is built on the property on both parcels.

A PAIR OF ECO-MINDED DESIGN ENTREPRENEURS BRING HIGH TROPICAL STYLE TO THE HAMPTONS BY KATYA RUSSELL

endé, piassava, pirarucu, and buriti are not part of the Hamptons design lexicon. What are they? If you correctly identified the first two as vegetable fibers the third as one of the largest freshwater fishes in the world and the fourth as the fruit of the moriche palm chances are you either know the tropics well or you ve spent time at the Heritage Brazil showroom in Southampton. The gallery deals in wildly inventive furniture and so goods from Brazil — some of which are made from raw materials that grow in the Amazon and the northeast of the country. My family is originally from the mazon and have a huge love for the area says Lilian ianna who founded the brand with her friend athiana eixeira. t had always been my dream to do something to bring awareness to this endangered part of the world. With the outbreak of the global health crisis ianna who had long worked in the fashion industry suddenly had the time to make that dream a reality. She was already pivoting toward home furnishings: high design pieces from Brazil that employed as she puts it slower forms of production that had a minimal footprint and which helped people.

“When the pandemic hit, I was stuck. I thought, oh my god, what am I going to do?” she recalled. That s when she decided to contact eixeira also from Brazil. In short order, the two women and their husbands, Michel Benarroch and lessandro eixeira banded together and hatched a plan. The eixeiras are best known locally as the founders of laina bouti ue tea company. s it happened they ran lain- out of a fantastic space — all white brick walls polished white concrete oors and fi eenfoot high ceilings — in a converted ice warehouse in Southampton, and they had room to spare. It proved the perfect backdrop for the bright colored rugs and “tropical” furniture that would soon be artfully displayed throughout. From the start, they decided that Heritage Brazil would do more than ust sell lovely things. Thus in addition to providing a showcase for ethicallyminded sustainable Brazilian cra s and design its founders support initiatives that help artisans. o this end their stable of makers includes small socially-responsible companies. For instance there s rapos & Fiapos which produces rugs woven from a mixture of cattails a plant fiber and goat leather cotton or the palm tree-derived buriti fiber. The doctor who started rapos & Fiapos realized that the people in her community didn t need medicine so much as they needed obs eixeira explains. This woman revived the ancestral tradition of rug weaving and she encourages the artisans to create their own designs.” Consider another Heritage Brazil staple: dyed “leather” skins that can be made into shoes and

hand bags from the once-endangered great aparaima gigas, commonly known as the pirarucu. At one time, says Vianna, the skins were discarded. Pirarucu stocks have since recovered and their trade provides extra income for indigenous people in the Amazon basin, who now sell the whole fish. We pay the right price a fair price she notes.

And then there is the collaboration between the designer Sérgio J. Matos and women from communities along the Rio Negro and the mazon iver. The women gather and soak piassava fibers in mud until they take on a deep terracotta hue and weave them into baskets of Matos’s design. According to the Heritage Brazil website, the project
helps the women rescue their cultural heritage. On the charitable front, there is the brand’s commitment to raising money for the Zagaia Foundation, which provides opportunities for indigenous women artisans, many of whom have been stru ling to stay a oat in the Covid era. The goal is to buy small motor boats so that people who live on the banks of the river can transport themselves says eixeira. f all the elements of earth air fire and water — it is water that has beguiled the human imagination, mostly because it is the element of emotion. Photographer Lynn Savarese beautifully captures this depth of expression in her fine art. She explains There is no better sub ect matter to convey the profound range of emotion we feel as humans — from tumultuous fury to ex uisite calmness to ecstasy and everything in between. Savarese who started her professional life as a corporate lawyer and then spent decades volunteering for different human rights organizations only discovered her passion for photography when she took an introductory photography class at the nd Street in Manhattan not uite ten years ago. GUT FEELINGS MICROBES HAVE A PROFOUND EFFECT ON OUR WELL-BEING

California, two groups of women were presented with stressful imagery via virtual reality and asked to perform tasks to solve the issues they were presented with. Those women with more diverse microbiomes showed a more active hippocampus. The hippocampus, thought to be the emotional center of the brain as well as the holder of both short- and long-term memory, is located under the cerebral cortex in the brain. Those women with more microbes were able to problem solve more effectively and showed less stress markers (high blood pressure and increased heart rate) than those women who had less diversity in their gut flora. he diversity and density of the flora in the gut has a direct relationship with the activity of the hippocampus. In other words — the gut brain connection.

here is a vast network of microbes that call your body home. We ac uire these microbes throughout our lifetime by breathing, touching, and eating. Such bacteria were the only inhabitants of earth for three billion years. Their chemical reactions supported the conditions that allowed for the development of multicellular organisms and, eventually, superorganisms like us. We evolved together, symbiotically supporting each other. hese fantastic flora do many essential obs in the body, but only recently have scientists begun to see ust how much they are actually responsible for. Studies with germ-free mice (mice raised in a sterile environment with no exposure to bacteria) have shown that the gut microbes play a role on human behavior and
emotions. The effects of stress on germ-free mice show that they are far less able to cope with stressful circumstances than their immunityac uired counterparts. dditionally those mice with minimized microbiomes are unable to solve problems the way their microbe-rich cousins can. n other words our gut microbes can influence how we think act and feel. nd considering how many more bacteria there are in our body than our own cells, it’s no surprise than they can have such a profound effect on our well-being. This phenomenon is due, in part, to the fact that the ma ority of our happy and zen hormones dopamine and serotonin, are synthesized in the gut with help from our microbe friends. These hormones help to regulate our emotions, which impact our decision making. In a study in

I am not saying that antibiotics or antibacterial sprays should never be used. Rather, they should be used more selectively and less universally to help preserve and protect the microbes that help us. When we do re uire an anti-microbial it is important that those microbes get replenished through probiotics and probiotic rich foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha so that the microbes can recolonize and continue doing their ob. his will make us all happier and healthier.

hen you're outdoors — in your yard, your garden, on the deck or patio, at a park, at the beach — take a minute to notice the world around you. Look at the owers in a garden and take in their colors — get up close and breathe in their fragrance really look at an individual ower see its different parts. f you love orchids look at them closely — the patterns inside them are visible to the insects that pollinate them in nature, and the patterns direct them toward the pollen. At the end of a beautiful day, watch the sun go down and notice the sunset colors in the sky and how they change. Go outdoors at night and look at the moon. Learn some constellations — the big and little dippers. This succulent wreath is an easy and inexpensive way to brighten up your space. ou can source the materials from your local cra shop and the succulents from any local nursery. Here are some simple steps to create this beautiful wreath:

STEP 1: Gather our Materials Wooden Wreath Moss including sphagnum moss Succulents Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks Floral Wire or Greening Pins Trimming Scissors STEP 2: Begin by hot gluing the moss to the base of the wreath. This will create a foundation that the succulents can rest on top of.

STEP 3: Cut your succulents where the stem meets the soil so youre le with ust the head of the succulent. ext cut a piece of oral wire that is long enough that it can wrap around the wreath. se the oral wire and wrap it around winding it between the petals around the base of the succulent. STEP 4: Lay out your succulents on the wreath before adhering them. ttach your succulent by wrapping the wire around the wreath and twisting the ends together at the back of the wreath. STEP 5: epeat. decided to only cover the base of the wreath with moss and succulents but you can continue around the entire wreath if you like. STEP 6: Mist the succulents once a week.
