Last season’s offerings of sunflower-print men’s swim trunks and silk pocket squares have been expanded to a full range of men’s handmade contemporary wear and Greg’s fiancé, Stacy Volkov, has collaborated on the design for the women’s collection. A wall showcases the works of local artists along with photos of the area’s landscape and Greg’s own family snapshots. Sure to be especially poignant, considering that tragically, Greg’s father, investment banker Ted Ammon, was murdered in 2001 in a notorious case in which their mother’s lover was accused

Not So Sweet Home For more than a century, a 1750 saltbox on Main Street in East Hampton has been billed as the inspiration for the popular 19th-century ditty, “Home Sweet Home.” But the sentimental notion has been dispelled. Despite prior claims, the song’s lyricist, John Howard Payne (1791-1852), never lived in the house, according to Home Sweet Home museum director Hugh King – though his mother was born in town, his father taught across the street at Clinton Academy, and his aunt once inhabited the seven-room cottage. Revisionism is underway. “The site is now less about Payne and his song, and more about Gustav and Hannah Buek, a wealthy couple from Brooklyn who purchased the house in 1907 partly because they were charmed by the “Home Sweet Home” legend, according to the New York Times.

New real estate firm on the block Compass has continued its foray into the Hamptons by acquiring the Mrs. Condie Lamb Agency, the oldest continuously operating real estate firm in East Hampton, which was founded by Elizabeth Lamb in 1963. The boutique brokerage, which has specialized in high-end summer rentals, was helmed by Kim Hovey, who took the reins in 1994 and has now joined the Compass team. The purchase comes on the heels of a huge sale for the company – hedgefunder Scott Bommer’s three Lily Pond Lane parcels that sold for $110 million last winter. That deal was brokered by former Sotheby’s bigwig Ed Petrie, one of Compass’s high-profile recruits.

Renewal An important local landmark, the Lyzon Hat Shop in Hampton Bays, is finally undergoing restoration after resting on steel beams for a decade. Originally

a general store, the structure was built in 1896 and turned into a popular hat shop in the early 1900s where it sold hats designed and made by famous milliner Walter King. Overseen by Amagansett restorers extraordinaire, Robert Strada and Richard Ward Baxter, of Strada Baxter Design/Build, LLC, the project, which will cost just north of half a million, is slated to be finished by the end of the summer.

The Name Game Homeowners on Bridgehampton’s Hildreth Avenue in Bridgehampton have changed the name of their historic street. According to Sandra Taylor, who led the petition to the Town of Southampton that granted the change, there are just too many roads named after Hildreth, an early local settler. Now that the number of Hildreth throughways has been reduced from eight to seven, residents of the Avenue are hoping that emergency services – and the much-needed UPS driver – will have an easier time navigating

to their street. The new name is Audubon, after the ornithologist. We only counted a few roads with that name on the South Fork.

Condos or Park? Manhattan’s Greystone Development, which owns several waterfront properties on Sag Harbor’s Ferry Road that it wants to turn into condos, has purchased another desirable parcel on up-and-coming West Water Street - that big white albatross catty-corner from the post office.The price: $4.94 million. Ryan Serhant of Nest Seekers International has been tapped to exclusively market and sell the residences. While the developers are looking to create a staggered row of houses harking back to the village’s roots as a whaling port, the Village is hoping for a public park. It is considering a proposal by village homeowner and landscape architect Edmund D. Hollander that features two beaches, a fishing and boat pier and trails.

ith the arrival of spring, the Hamptons real estate market has been heating up. The rental season has been very active, while sales have also been brisk. New construction is popular and Westhampton Beach, Montauk, and Sag Harbor are hot. Prices are holding steady and inventory is shrinking. Buyers are looking for value and there is plenty of it in the Hamptons! Judi Desiderio of Town & Country Real Estate says, “Rentals began the season fast and furious this year with thankfully longer terms than in the recent past. Sales are steady in all markets — particularly west of the canal (easy access to NYC). The $20M and up market scales are tipped in favor of the buyers. Hot areas are Westhampton Beach, Montauk, and East Hampton and Southampton Villages. Only the high end is listing heavy — most markets are balanced and under $1M needs more inventory.” Judi believes, “Sales and rentals are inversely related and sales are steady but not as feverish as it has been in prior years. Over 75% of our clientele comes from Manhattan. Either they will buy or rent to give them some much needed exhale time.” Presented by Town & Country Real Estate

I think people are beginning to notice that Hampton Bays, of all East End communities, offers the best upside potential! New construction is very good. Prices have risen a bit, not much. ARTISTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BY HEATHER BRYCE Renaissance Man There aren’t too many Hamptons real estate professionals (if any) who can claim to be both a working artist and have an entry on Internet Movie Data Base (IMDb.) After pursuing an acting career in New York, Joseph De Sane moved to the South Fork where the thespian switched to a career in real estate, a move that has led to his current position as a manager at Compass. More on his IMDB credits later.

Real estate enabled him to support his three kids and return to painting, a calling he’d left behind after graduating from the Long Island University Southampton Campus with a Bachelor of Fine Arts many years before. De Sane’s large abstract paintings reflect his penchant for the “raw and heavily textured.” The more a work is “gritty or imperfect – not perfectly formed and shaped,” the more it appeals to his aesthetic. “There’s something about art that allows itself to make mistakes,” says the artist who uses brushes from the hardware store to work professional quality oil paints. “You’ll see all kinds of bristles lost in my work.” He also employs a palette knife or ragged pieces of metal to scratch the surface. “Clean lines are not for me.” Yet he’s always had an eye for the decorative, a word he admits is “dangerous.” He layers his canvases with many colors, starting with a dark gesso primer and adding white and other colors that he scratches

through to reveal heavily textured geometric shapes – circles or squares. As for that film career, De Sane wrote, directed and acted in Mulligan Farm, a movie that was shot in the old Halsey farmhouse in Water Mill (since demolished). He has also found an abundance of “meaty roles” on the boards at Guild Hall and other local venues. With his art pieces being gobbled up by collectors, De Sane doesn’t need to act the part of a Renaissance man.

Powerful Forms After studying fine art at Cooper Union, Steven Kinder got swallowed up in the secure world of high finance, where he used his talents to head marketing and sales for a Wall Street investment firm. But even while promoting the benefits of stocks and bonds, the artist-at-heart worked on plaster molds in his office. His coworkers became so used to seeing his artsy projects that “no one flinched.” His artistic muse flourished during those wilderness years. While renovating bungalows in Noyac, he got his hands dirty with clay, creating a series of “rocks” the size of bowling balls and firing them in his own kilns “till they cracked.” He welded for a while. And he manufactured his own tiles – with images of local flora such as oak leaves and acorns – to line the bathroom and kitchen surfaces of his renovation projects.

There needs to be an exchange.” - Steven Kinder Three years ago Kinder picked up where he’d left off decades before and since then has executed hundreds of paintings on canvas and paper. He works both in a Water Mill studio and in a working Williamsburg factory loft where he’s begun to have studio visits from curators. While he had painted family portraits at school, his content has evolved into bold abstract works, featuring original color combinations.“I like the language of colors speaking to each other,” he says. “Just putting them next to each other, without even shapes, they can be soothing or angry.” He approached his latest oeuvre by first creating what he calls “icons--powerful forms” with impact such as circles, drips and bulls’ eyes. Their role is to “suck the viewer in.” “I believe art has to entertain,” he says. “I create performances for viewers to participate in. It’s not always about pleasure, it evokes emotion. There needs to be an exchange.”

Storytelling You might have seen Carol Saxe’s work on a poster, perhaps one of her paintings of dogs on the beach – wearing sunglasses, sitting on deck chairs, surfing. Or perhaps you’ve even purchased one of her prints of Main Beach or a lifeguard chair in Montauk. Those were for sale at the now defunct bookstore in East Hampton and the new owner has expressed interest in carrying them again. Despite an abstract phase in her early career, her “heart and soul” is in representational work, which she executes in acrylics. (She’s allergic to oils, literally not figuratively.) Saxe prefers expressing a narrative, and has many stories to tell. From beach-y scenes to boats quietly moored, most of her paintings incorporate water. On her studio wall hangs a painting of a crashing wave so true to life you feel you could get wet. In the past she focused on architecture, capturing

the essence of Manhattan townhouses and French cafés. Her local renderings include spot on paintings of such iconic locale as the American Hotel, The Lobster Roll and Guild Hall. These days she’s doing a lot of windows framed by filmy curtains blowing in the breeze. All overlook water including four she did of Billy Joel’s former Sagaponack oceanfront house. “My work is trending more minimal,” says the Springs artist, holding up a sail boat moored on the calm glassy surface of Three Mile Harbor, its mirror-like reflection the only other shape on the canvas besides water and sky. The award-winning painter is looking for local representation though she is shown in a handful of galleries from Maine to Jamesport on the North Fork. A gallery on Fisher’s Island helps her land many commissions – of scenic views, country clubs, boats – which she transports to the island by catching a ride in a friend’s plane. Meanwhile, she’s irked by Chinese companies that are blatantly pirating her works and selling them as “original Carol Saxes.” She gets no royalties, but isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

LOW MAINTENANCE LANDSCAPING BY ANNE HALPIN

S

urrounding your home with a beautiful landscape not only integrates your home into its setting and enhances the view from your windows; studies have shown repeatedly that good landscaping also enhances property values. But keeping the landscape looking good throughout the season and year after year requires work. Savvy homeowners can take advantage of some strategies for reducing the amount of maintenance while still having a beautiful landscape. Whether you do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you, here are some ways to lighten the landscaping load. Try groundcovers. In areas that don’t get foot traffic, plant groundcovers instead of lawn. Groundcovers don’t need mowing, need less fertilizing and watering, and suffer fewer diseases than a lawn, and some of them offer the bonus of flowers. A few good groundcovers for sunny locations (and all of which are considered deer resistant) include ajuga, or bugleweed, bearberry, ceratostigma (which bears electric-blue flowers in late summer), lysimachia and creeping thyme. In a shady location your choices include wild ginger, pachysandra (a classic, very tough and adaptable), vinca (also called periwinkle, it bears violet flowers in early spring, but can spread where you don’t necessarily want it to in amenable conditions), bunchberry (which bears bright red berries), sweet woodruff (small white flowers in spring and a gentle aromatic scent) and lamiastrum (some varieties have silvery leaves). Plant a screen instead of a hedge. Instead of a formal hedge that needs meticulous shearing to retain its clean lines and manicured look, you can define property lines with an informal screen of shrubs that don’t need pruning. If you’re looking for tall evergreens, Leyland cypress, junipers and hollies are

some likely candidates. Arborvitae has long been a favorite among East End homeowners, but it has also become a favorite of deer, and is best planted on fenced properties where deer are excluded. If you don’t use your home in winter, a screen of flowering shrubs such as forsythia, bridalwreath spiraea, Japanese spiraea, lilacs or rhododendrons may do the trick. Or you can plant ornamental grasses, which are resilient and low in maintenance, needing only an annual cutting back. Some widely planted varieties, mostly miscanthus,

Susan, peonies, yarrow (Achillea) and Russian sage (Perovskia). For a shady location, some good choices are heucheras (which have beautifully colored and patterned leaves), hellebores (which bloom in late winter), columbines (Aquilegia), astilbe, bleeding heart (Dicentra), ferns and if you don’t have deer, hostas (which offer foliage in many shades and combinations of green, gold and white). All these plants grow well in our area, and they’re readily available at local nurseries and from online sources.

Grow long-blooming perennials in beds and borders. If you love flowers and crave a perennial garden of flowers that return year after year, seek out varieties that are long blooming and don’t need frequent deadheading (removal of old blossoms) to look their best. Low maintenance perennials for a sunny spot include Siberian iris, alliums (ornamental relatives of onions), purple coneflower (Echinacea), black-eyed

Grow resilient roses. If roses are your pleasure, planting the tough, carefree landscape roses that have hit the market in recent years, such as the Knockout roses, which bloom all summer, instead of finicky hybrid teas that need regular upkeep to look their best, is a real work saver. Landscape roses grow about 3 feet tall, are disease resistant, and produce flowers throughout summer and into fall. Taking a little time to strategize ways to decrease the time it takes to keep your landscape looking beautiful will let you enjoy more time at the beach, save some money, or just appreciate your beautiful surroundings.

nother year, another game of restaurant musical chairs. Where, oh where, will our favorite eats be this year? Here’s the scoop ... information gathered by our network of spies, especially commercial real estate honcho Hal Zwick of Town & Country Real Estate.

micro-brews and casual eats since 1996, will be leaving 40 Bowden Square. The good news is that they’re not going far; they will be taking over the Jobs Lane space where the Driver’s Seat has been for eons. We hear that a Mexican restaurant will be populating their vacated spot. Bueno!

Undoubtedly the most delicious fare will be had at Topping Rose House, the upscale inn whose restaurant was launched in 2012 with star chef Tom Colicchio at the helm.This season the supernova chef Jean-George Vongerichten will be taking the reins and South Fork foodies are poised in anticipation. Oops. Well, at least that’s what Page Six reported and which “news” several other publications also ran with.

Zach Erdem, the owner of Southampton’s 75 Main (at whose sidewalk café Southamptonites like to see and be seen) has added – not one, but two – other establishments to his portfolio. He’s taking over the quaint Southampton spot where Nammos Estiatorio dished out fish, and before that Nello Balans (formerly of Madison Avenue’s Nello’s) served up Italian fare. The deal is especially sweet for Erdem who admits to long ago having been fired by Nello. He will also try his hand at the former barn at 125 Tuckahoe Lane that has been the site for many a nightclub over the years including the long-lived Tavern, and most recently 1Oak, which is not returning for a third season.

But a call to the Bridgehampton hotel reveals that the story “was leaked” and “nothing has been written in stone yet.” One thing is certain: there have been many changes afoot in the handsome white Greek Revival manse, what with general managers and other staff coming and going over the past few months. At press time we can only hope that Vongerichten will add Topping Rose to his roster of four-star culinary destinations. Ciao Circo What a shame. After only one season in business, son of New York’s Le Cirque powerhouse Sirio Maccione, Mario, has closed the Southampton branch of Circo, the circus-theme eatery he and his brother Mauro launched in New York in the ‘90s.We will miss the blue and yellow striped walls and velvety tomato soup. Circo Southampton had followed on the heels of another failed enterprise, a Hamptons branch of Delmonico’s, the Manhattan restaurant that was founded in 1837. Let’s hope that restaurateur Stratis Morfogen, who will be opening a branch of the Jue Lan Club, his Chelsea Chinese restaurant, will fare better. Winston’s Bar & Grill, another one-season wonder, will also be calling it quits. The Caribbean-themed restaurant, which last year took over Nichol’s in East Hampton, is gone. We hear that serial restaurateur Michael Gluckman, who has opened and closed many a local hotspot – most recently Sag Harbor’s Madison and Main – is partnering with Shane

Dyckman, whose Sag Harbor coffee house Sag Town, is a popular meeting place for caffeine devotees. The scuttlebutt has it that they will be calling their place Service Station, and have conceived it as a yearround casual hangout serving downhome American food – not unlike Nichol’s, which left the space in 2014 after 15 years as a local watering hole. After a mere year in business, Doppio East, the Sag Harbor outpost of a Long Island chain of Italian trattorias, was closed last summer by state tax collectors looking to collect a sales tax debt of more than $17,000. We hear that it won’t be returning this year. Goodbye to Ciao by the Beach in Montauk, which will be replaced by Arbor, a new spot that promises to serve fresh, local and homemade food. Amagansett favorite coffee hangout, Jack’s Stir Brew, is opening on Division Street in Sag Harbor where Juicy Naam used to dole out smoothies. “He

has a cult following,” says Zwick. An understatement to be sure. Now that Fishbar is gone from the dock on Montauk’s East Lake Drive, Dave’s Grill will be moving into the space. Hearts and palates were clutched when Espresso, the popular Italian takeout shop in Sag Harbor closed its doors two years ago, after nearly two decades in business. Hurrah! It’s back, but this time with a different name – Espresso da Asporto (whatever that means) – in a new space, the former Cigar Bar on Sag Harbor’s Main Street. It’s been open a few months and is bustling with customers in search of fresh focaccias and pies from their pizza oven. Rumors are swirling about the place on Sag Harbor’s wharf that housed B. Smith for ages and Harlow more recently. Some say the property was bought by Ron Perlman. Others swear that Harlow is coming back. If you know anything, please give us the scoop.

Zap-a-Dee-Doo-Dah No one warned me about the handsome quotient of Southampton dermatologist Elliott Weiss. Suffice it so say that when I walked into his office, my heart skipped a beat. When I could stop ogling his chiseled face, I was able to focus, somewhat, on what he was saying. Did I mention he’s a Harvard grad?

I was in search of a major improvement to my face and he spelled out the options. Weiss is quite keen on Fraxel DUAL, his most popular procedure, which he describes as “refreshing the skin.” He employs two wavelengths. One goes deep to trigger collagen production and diminish fine lines and scars. The second removes sun damage for smooth and even skin tone. What’s not to like? And yet, I’m after dramatic results. DUAL is for patients who don’t want to “be out of commission.” After a few days of swelling and looking “bronzed,” you’re party ready. My lined and sagging flesh needs the big guns. I point out the vertical lines above my top lip, the result of a lifetime of talking. (Is there any way to shut up?) And the forest of etchings around my bottom lip that look like a Rembrandt Weiss, MD drawing. Dr. Peel Good I can’t stop looking at my face.The skin is aglow, almost shiny (in a good way). My cheeks are abloom. (What would Jane Austen write about them, I wonder?) I have just left Spa Hamptons, a candlelit refuge in a private Southampton house, and am gazing at my face in the rearview mirror with such intensity that I’m afraid I’ll get into a fender bender. Spa Hamptons is the beauty haven of Bobbi Terzi, a lovely and vivacious medical aesthetician whose clientele includes Southampton’s ladies who lunch and a roster of celebrities including a famous Hamptons

Yes, she can do the usual pampering spa facials, but she also performs “all levels of medical peels, natural and chemical.” My head is awhirl as she lists the various peels she can perform. There’s a fruit salad of options: pomegranate, papaya, pumpkin. Or other more elaborate names: salicylic, glycolic, BX Lift, Jessner. She also wields a microdermabrasion wand connected to a $30,000 machine.“Not lightweight.” And she uses “wave lights” to push products deep into the skin -- blue for healing acne and red for stimulating collagen. “It all sounds like a science experiment,” she says. “But there is no doubt you will come out looking better than before.” She chooses the treatment based on skin type. Using both the healing essence of plant extracts and medicalgrade skin care products, she works with patients with scars, hyperpigmentation or who have sun damage, acne or wrinkles. For my first visit she applies Neova, a light peel of glycolic and lactic acids to turn over cells to allow fresh ones to come to the surface. Always ready with a quip, she refers to new cells as “rising to the occasion.” It will also allow her to “get to know” my skin. “I like to control the process by doing it in stages.”

For regular clients, she often changes products in order to “fool the skin.” On my second visit she gets down to business, employing her strongest weapon: the Vi Peel, a concentrated blend of chemicals that is so powerful it contains a pain-defying anesthetic that confers a light numbing and tingling. This “super-duper peel diminishes deep wrinkles and discoloration.Your new skin comes to the rescue,” she says. I’m amazed at how my forehead lines seem to shrink and at how plump and glowing the skin is. She recommends it once or twice a year.
