SUMMER SALES SURGE The Wall Street Journal recently published a report from Douglas Elliman that despite concerns over rising interest rates and economic uncertainty, the Hamptons saw an uptick in third-quarter sales compared to the previous quarter. Transactions in the region, jumped 11.6% in the third quarter compared to the three months between April and June, the data showed. For luxury deals — the top 10% of the market — sales were up 11.5% compared to the summer. “Sales rose from the second to the third quarter for only the second time in 18 years,” Jonathan Miller, president and CEO of the appraisal

company Miller Samuel, said in the report. Still, the number of deals declined for the ninth consecutive time on an annual basis, and prices have come down from the same time last year, although they “remained sharply higher than prepandemic levels,” the report said. A lack of supply is partly to blame. Although inventory rose annually for the fourth
straight quarter, it remains limited after the rush of sales that closed during the height of the pandemic. Because of that, bidding wars occurred on nearly one in five sales, according to the brokerage. Meanwhile, the median sale price of a residence on the East End was $1.4 million, down 2.2% since the summer and a fall of 11.4% annually, the figures
showed. For luxury, the median price was just under $6.2 million, a 3.2% quarterly decline and an 18.5% year-over-year drop. AMERICA’S MOST EXPENSIVE ZIPS Property Shark has released their annual survey featuring the most expensive zip codes in the country. Once again, the Hamptons were featured prominently for 2023. In particular, Sagaponack’s 11962 zip code and Water Mill’s 11976 zip code earned places among the nation’s top 10 most exclusive areas, coming in at #2 and #6, respectively. Both zip codes saw significant increases in median sale prices with Sagaponack registering a remarkable 40% rise and Water Mill experiencing a 22% YoY increase. Despite a national slowdown, the Hamptons market continues to show strong price trends.

t’s almost the end of another year. It’s been a bit rocky for many in the world. We continue to be thankful for what we have here on the East End.
ROW, ROW, ROW Dune Deck and Discovery Land backer George Clooney has what’s sure to be another hit on the horizon with his next movie, The Boys in the Boat. Set to be released on Christmas Day, the film is about a group of down-but-not-out rowers from Washington State who competed and won against the country’s most elite schools, and eventually for gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936.
Cheers are also in order for two Hampton Bays filmmakers. Adam Baranello recently won a Gold Achievement Award at the International Film Festival of Manhattan for his latest independent film, The Weird Ones. And bravas to documentarian Christiane Arbesu, who just premiered her latest, I Am Judit, about the extraordinary life of Holocaust Survivor and the East End’s own Judy Sleed.
Set during the Great Depression, it’s a story built on necessity, grit and teamwork. Based on the novel by Daniel James Brown and produced and directed by Mr. Clooney, the film stars Joel Edgerton and Callum Turner. Grab your hankies for this thrilling underdog tale. NEW STORIES Former Southampton resident Rachel Ray has ventured out of the kitchen and landed herself a great big home reno show. Titled Rachel Ray’s Rebuild, the new Hulu series focuses on families in need of constructive advice and construction work after losing their homes from uncontrollable circumstances. After having lived through a fire at her own home at Lake Luzerne in upstate New York in 2020, Ms. Ray says the experience opened her eyes to all that it takes to rebuild a residence. The 10-episode series will feature her and construction professional Anthony Carrion from HGTV’s Kitchen Cousins as they tackle reconstructing from the ground up, from natural disasters, and freak accidents.

TAKE TWO The Hamptons Doc Fest is back for its 16 year and rolling films from November 30 to December 6 at Bay Street Theater and the Sag Harbor Cinema in Sag Harbor. th
Highlights from this year’s festival include a Pennebaker Career Achievement Award for director Matthew Heineman, screenings of American Symphony and Obsessed with Light, and a special tribute to filmmaker Nancy Buirski. Additionally, the festival will honor the work of Artemis Rising Foundation and Regina Scully.
And lastly, high fives at the net to Julia Stabile and Matilda Buchen. The Westhampton Beach teens recently took home the New York State Doubles Trophy at the NYSPHSAA Girls Championships. We just love that! LOVE & LIGHT Wishing a warm and peaceful sendoff to East Hampton’s Lois Erdmann Wright. The former artist, author, and palmist, passed in October. A colorful presence here on the East End, she will forever be remembered for her contributions as LTV’s longest-running host, to the world of Grey Gardens Americana and her many celebrity palm and tarot readings.
PAGE TURNER Bridgehampton resident and former Macmillan CEO John Sargent has turned the tables and written a memoir himself. In Turning Pages: The Adventures and Misadventures of a Publisher, the literary veteran shares stories from his 40 years in the book business. In his autobiography, the surfing enthusiast and current chairman of the Ocean Conservancy includes snippets from his life and lots of juicy insider tales of working with some of the biggest names in the publishing world. Avid readers will be sure to glean some interesting details about Sargent’s interactions with everyone from James Baldwin to Monica Lewinsky.

hristian Siriano is known for the old-school glamour of his women’s wear collections. A few years ago, however, without fuss or fanfare he quietly established an interior design practice. It so happens that Siriano is also a dab hand at interior decoration and furniture design. For proof of his talent, one need look no further than his own ultramodern getaway in Westport, Connecticut. When Siriano first set eyes on the angular six thousand-square-foot wood and stucco structure (designed by RAAD Studio in collaboration with the architect Bolek Ryzinski) he realized it was ready-made — ready-made for him, that was. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a wine cellar, an open living room, a principal bedroom with its own capacious decking overlooking a verdant garden, and a pool set on 3.5 acres more than met his requirements. Looking out at the surrounding landscape, Siriano felt as though he’d left the metropolis behind.
That dual sensibility is on display in his Westport house, especially in the living room, which Siriano considers the property’s center of gravity. Indeed, only a fashion tastemaker would think of pairing slouchy Mario Bellini chairs, a pouff-y Pierre Paulin-ish sofa, and a mid-century wood-framed couch upholstered in shearling — all upholstered with sartorial flare. The walls are gallery-white, a foil for his art collection of works by Eser Gündüz, Gee Gee Collins, Josh Young, and others, in addition to his own paintings. “There’s no TV,” he says, “and everyone hangs out there and we talk and look at books. It became a beautiful room, which doesn’t happen all the time.” There’s beauty in the kitchen, too, with its natural wood cabinets and jet-black Pietra Cardosa countertops. The impact of the natural stone
Best of all, the house didn’t require any structural work, even though he recently elected to build an extension (a wing where “family and friends can be silly and messy without ruining my things”). He didn’t even need to go shopping, having acquired heaps of vintage finds and lovely objects from sources far and wide. And then there were his own quirky pieces from his debut furniture line: whimsical rectilinear tables and chairs that have an almost creaturely presence. Positioned throughout the house, they look at home in the space, appearing to stand guard over it like sentinels. “I treat my furniture like sculpture,” says Siriano, who recently brought out a second, more comprehensive collection comprised of Art Deco-inspired sofas, coffee tables, and chaises upholstered in silk and silk blends. “At the same time,” he continues, “I’m trying to introduce fashion elements into the home.” To this end, Siriano is attentive to the ways in which “the curve and shape and line of a sofa can suggest the silhouette of a dress,” or, conversely, the clean lines of a piece of furniture can influence the cut of a suit. “Interior design is my palate-cleanser,” he says. “I work with so much color and texture and fantasy so this is a way for me to use a different part of my brain. I’m minimalist in my interior design — clean and modern — and it’s a bit different from my clothes.” In other words, he says, fashion inspires interiors and vice versa. “Doing both at the same time has been really fun.”

is striking enough to make you reconsider the trend for quartz-clad work surfaces. Many of his clients share his affinity for such elemental materials, a number of whom have houses in the Hamptons. On that front, he’s currently completing the interiors of a new-build in Water Mill for a client who shares his love of vintage furniture. “We started it during the pandemic and at that time we went clean and neutral. But now we’re changing it a bit, introducing pinks and blues
to make it cozier and livelier. It’s not your typical white Hamptons house!” Siriano says that although he’s by no means “a coastal designer”, he really likes the relaxed feel of beach style. In fact, the common denominator in all his undertakings is a sense of ease. He jokes: “I like to say, ‘You have a piece of Siriano in your closet. Now you can have a piece of Siriano in your living room. It’s a full take-over.’”

I was selling high-end luxury real estate in La Jolla, California alongside a topproducing broker and loving every second of it! Sunshine and surfers aside, I couldn't help but wonder if I was missing an opportunity by not selling where I was born and raised. My grandfather was a well-known builder out east and this industry is in my blood. My aunt and her daughter are local realtors, my sister-in-law is an interior designer, and my brother and uncle are both builders, all in the East End market. I have never been one to wonder "what if", so I packed my bags, my apartment, and my sunny life up and headed east. If I could handle La Jolla, I was confident I could tackle the Hamptons. HRES: What qualities or certifications set you apart from other agents? I have a degree from the College of Charleston in community planning and preservation. The program included field work over traditional classroom study. I have hands-on experience in drafting, restoration, design-build, town planning, interior design, and sales. But that is the boring stuff. What honestly sets me apart is my personal approach to sales. Quite simply, it goes back to kindergarten and the Golden Rule. Every
single person in a transaction, no matter what side of the deal you are on, is a human being. That warrants respect and honesty. I go the extra mile to make sure everyone involved feels taken care of and heard. My deals are fun! HRES: Could you share a recent success story or a challenging situation you encountered in the real estate market and how you navigated it? My most challenging situations have actually been dealing with some of the other agents in this market. My goal is to change the dynamic of broker relationships in the Hamptons. Out with the sharks and in with the… dolphins? There is more than enough business to go around, collaborate, share, and celebrate in each other’s success. As the new girl on the block, I have of course dealt with some criticism and skepticism. I laid low, marched on and in just one month in what some are calling a historically-slow market, I sold 3 houses, put 2 more in contract and just listed another totaling $9.4M. I have sold $77.9M since 2020. HRES: What strategies do you employ to stay updated with the latest market trends and developments in real estate and how do you apply this knowledge to benefit your clients? Everyone who knows me, knows I love to talk. So, in work, I use it to my benefit — to talk about real estate. I wake up every day, study the market trends and ask myself: How am I going to tackle the newest challenge and adjust my approach? Then, I talk honestly and openly to my clients. I don’t dismiss their concerns or deny factual data just to close a deal. Instead, I use the data to best explain either a sale number, purchase price or negotiation. I do this by showing them. Not telling them. I hear their concerns, acknowledge and address them, and then make an honest game plan to achieve their goal together.

Her exhibits at the Arts Center at Duck Creek in East Hampton and currently at the Long Island Museum for the SOMOS exhibit showcase her earth-based caskets, urns and shrouds, an artistic and magical green interpretation of the traditional funeral home offerings. She incorporates moss, soap, sand, seaweed and beeswax. The incredibly peaceful setting in nature where the Arts Center hosts both musical and artistic exhibitions in traditional barns only added to the contemplative experience. Safe space is key. This project titled Aquí Descansamos honors the dead while creating space to imagine a future where we rest

alongside them, an opportunity for empowerment. “I know we live in a death and grief averse society which is one reason I want the pieces to be beautiful and ease the social taboo,” she explains, “A grave doesn’t need to be a concrete slab.” Green burial is actually an evolving and popular alternative to elaborate caskets, using materials that are organic, biodegradable and ephemeral. Hernández makes her funerial creations with reinforced cardboard and natural materials to be more personal and imaginative such as The Fairy Garden with purple reindeer moss and shitake mushroom accents. The wonderful whimsical realm of fairy tales which soothed our fears as children comes full circle to reassure us as adults. Reactions to the work have ranged the gamut. “Some are drawn to the beauty of the material and find it welcoming. Some get really emotional but appreciate it from afar. And other people are really taken aback and apprehensive.” The reactions explore the fear of what is one of the most common experiences which we all ultimately face in others and ourselves. Hernández credits her late mother Sylvia with always encouraging her artistic talents and education. She grew up between Texas and Wisconsin where her family did migrant work then earned her undergraduate degree from Columbia College in Chicago and masters from Kendall School of Art
and Design in Michigan. “I thought I was going to be a painter, but then I ended up making soap urns,” she says with a laugh, “I embrace the changes in my artistic path.” The East End is a relatively new home for her, and being around both artists she studied and admired as well as their legacy is an inspiration. She also works as Director of Curation and Board Secretary at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation and as Assistant Curator at the Parrish Art Museum. She embraces the local artistic community which makes her feel, “warm and cared for” and for those opportunities she enjoys and creates for other artists. “It feels very dynamic with a lot of forward movement.” Because, of course, the other end of understanding death is to embrace the day and live. ou wouldn’t necessarily guess that the subject matter for a bright and vibrant young artist with a contagious positive attitude would be death. Yet for Brianna L. Hernández, the experience of losing her mother to cancer five and a half years ago and being her caretaker in her final year profoundly affected her emotionally and artistically. “I was learning about my own grief and also others’ grief,” she explains, “I needed to find healing through my art since my experience is not unique, especially with cancer. I wanted to have a more accessible conversation around death, a catharsis for those who have already gone through it but also to create a space of education and conversation for those who haven’t.” Grief is both a personal experience and a communal one so Hernández communicates via her individual artistic tune while striking a responsive chord with others.

Foodies in-the-know are probably already in on the not-so-secret secret that is Hen of the Woods Market in Southampton. Owned by Jonathan Bernard, who originally made his business selling mushrooms to chefs on the East End, the specialty store is now filled with culinary delights that can be found almost nowhere else on eastern Long Island. basket or find that one special item that your foodie friend has been seeking out. This store has it all. Bridgehampton’s L&W Market serves delicious breakfast and lunch daily. But the store’s market is also a treasure trove when it comes to foodoriented holiday shopping. In addition to a full line of pantry items, the store stocks its own proprietary bottled goods, under both Almond and #KimchiJews. Pick up Sriracha mayo, bulgogi steak marinade, Maldon salt, smoked almonds, tomatillo salsa verde, Aleppo pepper, sweet chili garlic sauce, harissa, chili oil, and even citruscured olives for a locally sourced selection of snacks that will delight any food-obsessed giftee in your life. At Carissa’s — visit either the Amagansett location, on Pantigo Road, or the Sag Harbor location, on Bay Street — the wide world of gifting extends far beyond homemade breads and pastries. A Leset apron, loose and linencolored, is an ideal pick for that family member who spends plenty of time in the kitchen but who still wants to look chic while cooking.

he Fall 2024 High Point Market, one of the most anticipated events in the interior design and home furnishing industry, once again provided a glimpse into the future of home décor. “This year's High Point furniture market showcased a significant shift in colors, transitioning from vibrant blues to olive sage greens and earth tones. The textiles and fabrics on display were elevated, highlighting beautiful textures. Highpoint is undeniably back in full fashion,” says Jeannine Price of Redbarn Designworks. Here are the top design trends that stole the spotlight at the event: Biophilic Bliss: Building on the trend from previous years, Fall 2024 continued to emphasize biophilic design. Nature-inspired elements were abundant, with materials such as reclaimed wood, stone, and organic textiles taking center stage. Living walls, indoor water features, and expansive windows were prominent features, bringing the outdoors in and creating a sense of harmony and tranquility.

Hybrid Workspaces: The ongoing shift towards remote work and hybrid work models has led to a surge in home office design. wo of Miami’s most exciting art events are just around the corner: Miami Art Week held December 6-10 and Art Basel Miami Beach held December 8 -10. international art fairs in and around Miami. With a dizzying array of gallery presentations, fairs, and culinary events to choose from, we’ve got the inside scoop on what you should check out at this year’s festivals. ART AROUND TOWN Festivals to check out beyond the Art Basel festival
at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The Mana Wynwood Convention Center is home to two of Art Week’s longest-running fairs, Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami. This year, the Museum of Graffiti in Wynwood is celebrating its fourth anniversary with a lineup of exhibitions and events during Art Week. On December 6, LA-based graffiti artist turned oil painter Mear One will open a solo exhibition entitled Metaphysical Surrealism which will showcase 8-12 oil and acrylic paintings, ranging from small to large canvases. Now in its 16th year, the INK Miami Art Fair focuses on works printed on paper. Held from December 6-10 at The Dorchester Hotel in Miami Beach, the festival includes printed works by internationally renowned artists. The highly anticipated Context Art Miami fair features innovative, cutting-edge art, ideal for collectors looking for fresh work. The fair takes place December 5-10 and showcases new art by boundary-pushing artists. CULINARY EVENTS These can’t miss events are a delicious combination of art and food. Head to Miami’s Design District for the “Art After Dark” event at the Michelin-starred and James Beard-nominated COTE Miami restaurant. From December 7-10, guests will have the chance to dine on a specially curated menu and see a showcase of world-class art from private collectors.

On December 6, The Balfour Hotel will host “Interstellar Rhapsody: Harmonizing Roots & Cosmos”, featuring local artist Gustavo Oviedo. The event will include passed bites, complimentary beverages, and live entertainment. From December 7-10, two blocks in Wynwood will be transformed into a Hive: A Culinary and Cocktail Village, a one-of-a-kind destination for enjoying food, music, and art.
If you want to be immersed in art, check into Faena Hotel Miami Beach. The opulent beachfront hotel was founded by Argentinian art collector Alan Faena, and the hotel’s trademark piece of art is the Damien Hirst-created gilded wooly mammoth skeleton.
In Downtown Miami Kimpton EPIC Hotel will feature a special menu during Art Week that pays tribute to artist Liv Dockerty, whose work is currently on display at the hotel as part of the property’s artist residency program, EPIC Art. During Art Week, the hotel’s Area 31 restaurant will feature dishes and cocktails inspired by Dockery’s “Liv in the Clouds” series. ART FORWARD ACCOMMODATIONS Experience a bit of art with your stay at these hotels. Sonder’s The Deco opened in June and the hotel is just steps from the beach. Housed across four Art Deco buildings designed by famed architect Henry Hohauser, the modern hotel features a charming pool with breezy cabanas.
