HOME & GARDEN

GREEN SCENE

GIVE YOUR HOME AND GARDEN THE ROYAL GREEN TREATMENT BY HANNAH SELINGER

I

t’s August, the middle of summer and a month of verdant abundance. In that green spirit, we’ve compiled a list of environmentally sound solutions to common problems that plague the modern home and yard. You can still treat your home for ticks, clean your patio, and even grow a beautiful garden while still looking out for the planet. Here are our best tips for staying green this summer. TICK TREATMENT On the East End of Long Island, ticks are a persistent burden. But families with pets or small children might be reluctant to apply tick-repelling pesticides to their lawns. You can actually spray for ticks in a way that’s harmless to humans, plants, animals, and the earth as a whole, though. Essential oils, which you can purchase online or through wellness retailers, are effective repellents. Ticks are particularly sensitive to eucalyptus oil, rosemary oil, sage oil, lavender oil, pennyroyal oil, and mint oil. In a spray 10

container used for massive bug treatments — you can find these at landscaping stores — add 20 drops of oil to every four ounces of water. The result will be a lawn that does the work for you (and that smells great doing it). WATER-SAVING PLANTS Water usage is a common culprit when it comes to maintaining a green home and, of course, all plants need water. But if you’re looking to cut back on this essential resource, you can still live with some green in your life. Outdoor plants like Mexican feather grass, lavender, sage, common thyme, echinacea, and blue oat grass require very little water, even in the middle of summer. You can also plant succulents, like Angelina, which will thrive through blistering summer heat. Indoors, spider plants, snake plants, sago palms, orchids, and ZZ plants require minimal water, making them a greener option for your home and garden.

PEST PREVENTION Pesticides can have long-term impact on the quality and health of soil, and they can also cause undue harm to benevolent species, like deer. Plus, runoff from pesticides (and also fertilizer) is a proven agitator of high nitrogen and carbon levels in local waterways, precipitating everything from mass die-offs to species shifts. A simple solution of Borax and water (one tablespoon to one gallon) can ward off bugs — and it can also kill weeds. Onion and garlic spray, made from onion, water, garlic, and cayenne pepper, can be sprayed directly onto plant leaves to discourage bug infestations. Finally, chrysanthemum flower tea, which contains the natural pesticide known as pyrethrum, can be made by boiling dried flowers in hot water. Spray over plants and soil for a natural barrier against bugs. PATIO CLEANER The company

produces a line of environmentally sound household cleaner, has in its repertoire a series of outdoor cleaners that everyone should own. The Simple Green Oxy Solve Concrete and Driveway Pressure Washer Cleaner, which can be added directly to the tank of a pressure washer, cleans driveways, walkways, patios, and more. It is not harmful to plants and it can neutralize odors, too, from pets and other animals. It won’t harm your lawn, either, should some of the solution make its way over there. Indoors, there are plenty of sustainable products on the market. The relatively young Butlers Brand label is among the best. Developed by former domestic employees, the concentrated solution comes with a reusable metal bottle that won’t end up in a landfill. ABOUT THAT LAWN Lawns are widely considered to be nonsustainable, since they require a ton of maintenance (electricity or gas from a mower, fertilizer, pesticides, and, of course, water). There are, however, several options when it comes to maintaining a green space that isn’t a traditional lawn. First, you can replant grass with something that doesn’t need to be mowed, like a low-growing turf grass. You can also replace sections of the lawn with perennial plantings, trees, or other groundcovering greenery. Finally, some households are moving toward synthetic turf instead,

which offers the benefit of a usable space without the harmfulness of the traditional grass lawn. Although that’s a more expensive upgrade, it’s also one that will last. GROW YOUR OWN One green switch you can make this year — whether it’s inside or out — is converting to edible greenery. If you have a plot large enough, you can plant fruits and vegetables and eat a section of your own garden. Indoors, you can keep small plants and a wide array of herbs alive. You can also invest in a hydroponic system, like any of the Lettuce Grow vertical planters, which can be kept indoors (or moved outside when the weather changes). Some of these planters will require heaters to thrive, but you can still grow through them everything from lettuce to herbs to tomatoes to cucumbers to green beans. The more food you create in your own home is the less food you have to procure through the use of fossil fuels, like gasoline.

PEEKO OYSTERS Located in the town of New Suffolk, this oyster operation delivers some of the North Fork’s most delicious bivalves. Buy 25, 50, or 100 oysters, raised in Little Peconic Bay, on site or online, at www.peekooysters.com and revel in the briny, local magic of these North Fork jewels. Not only will you be supporting

1610 BAKEHOUSE The dedicated bakers at this North Fork bakery produce artisanal sourdough breads from a starter that began in 2015. Organic, stone-milled flour from upstate New York’s Farmer Ground Flour, combined with a rigorous, 36-hour baking process yields a nutritious, easily digestible, and particularly flavorful bread. Breads can be pre-ordered for pickup in Calverton, but buyer beware: they sell out quickly, so definitely plan ahead. Order your loaf at www.1610bakehouse.com.

GREENPORT FIRE Do yourself (and your palate) a favor and stop into Greenport Fire, where there’s no shortage of heat, regardless of the weather. The store stocks small-batch hot sauces (and even offers hot sauce subscriptions) for the strong-of-palate. Greenport makes their own sauce, and they also stock other sauces from other producers. Plus, they carry Greenport Jerky Company’s beef jerky, in signature flavors, like the tender Habanero beef jerky, a spicy snack that will really get the blood moving. If you can’t make it to the store, join the Hot Sauce of the Month club online, at www.feelthefireny.com.

LAVENDER BY THE BAY The Rozenbaum family has owned and operated this lavender farm, in East Marion, since 2002. The 17-acre farm has over 80,000 lavender plants, and they convert their purple fields into everything from essential oils to sachets to liquid hand soaps to flavored salts. In fact, the store has a whole culinary section, offering lavender extract, herbes d’Provence, lavender fleur de sel, edible dried lavender bunches, and dried lavender for cooking. An in-person visit unearths the complexity of this delicate flower, though you can also shop for

TY LLWYD FARM In Northville, you’ll find Ty Llwyd Farm (the name means brown house, in Welsh), home to brown eggs, seasonal produce, hay, potatoes, and raw milk. The farm is the only one permitted to legally sell raw milk on Long Island, and the creamy, delicious dairy product is a must-try for those who have only had homogenized, pasteurized milk. The historic farm, which was built in the 1870s by a great uncle of co-owner David Wines, is a picturesque place to pick up groceries. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, and the farm grows everything it sells.

LANDSCAPE

WINDOW BOX CHARM AN EASY WAY TO MAKE FLOWERS & GREENERY PART OF YOUR HOME BY ANNE HALPIN

I

f you live in a cottage or condo, you might not have the space – or inclination – to plant a garden. But you can still enjoy some flowers – or herbs for the kitchen – by planting window boxes, even if you’re just here for the summer. A garden shed, too, can be charming with a window box full of flowers. Window boxes are easy to install, simple to plant and fun to care for. They don’t need hours of digging, bending and weeding to maintain. Window boxes make flowers and greenery a part of your home, and even if you’ve never gardened before, planting a window box is an easy way to start. It can be a fun project to do with kids, too. Be aware of how much sun and shade your windows receive during the day, and how exposed they are to the wind. For a breezy location concentrate on low plants with sturdy stems, and make sure the boxes are securely mounted on strong brackets. If your window boxes will be in shade part of the day, you’ll have the most success with shade tolerant plants like impatiens, wax begonias, fuchsias, coleus, or hostas (if your property is fenced for deer).

When designing the planting, consider the heights and shapes of the plants. A row of plants all the same height looks boring and unnatural. Use plants of varying heights to give your window boxes a more naturalistic look. Place taller plants in the back of the box, shorter plants in the middle ground and low edging and trailing plants in the front. Letting the trailers spill over the front of the box enhances the charm factor. Stagger the plants instead of lining them up in rows, placing some a bit farther back and others slightly forward for a more natural look. A romantic, overflowing design with colorful plants that arch gracefully or cascade and tumble can look just right on a cottage or garden shed. The colors can be soft pastels or bold and bright, in combinations that are soft or bold. If the window box is in bright sun, clear, strong hues look best – pastels may look washed out. On the other hand, pastels and white are ideal for enlivening the shade. Special effects are also possible in window boxes. For a tropical look use a bold-leaved houseplant – Chinese evergreen, dracaena, dieffenbachia or Hawaiian ti plant. Vines like philodendron or pothos can trail over the edge. You might want a miniature rose garden in a sunny box, or a woodsy planting of ferns, primroses and violets in the shade. If herbs are your passion, consider anise, dill, fennel or sweet basil for the back of a large box, with chives, oregano, Italian parsley and marjoram in the middle ground, and curly parsley or thyme

16

for the front. Salad greens also grow happily in a window box, too. Try baby head lettuces such as Tom Thumb, leaf lettuces, arugula, sorrel or cress. You can also plant radishes, roundrooted carrots, and little beets in your window box farm. The universe of flowers for window boxes is surprisingly large, including annuals, perennials and even smaller bulbs. Small perennials such as evergreen candytuft and basket of gold will perform ably in a window box. But for lavish bloom over a longer time, annuals are the way to go. One of my favorite combinations is blue Salvia in the rear, silvery dusty miller and verbena in rose, pink and lavender in the center, and variegated vinca spilling over the front and sides. If you’re looking for a change from the ever-popular geraniums, petunias, impatiens and marigolds for summer, consider blue and purple-flowered ageratum, browallia, brachycome, felicia or nierembergia, or purples and reds of fuchsia, salvias and nicotiana. Sunny yellows and oranges are found in nasturtiums, coreopsis, celosia, and arctotis. Red and pink possibilities include dwarf snapdragons, verbena, China aster, phlox, gomphrena, portulaca and zinnia. The best soil for window boxes is the same light, porous but well-drained but water-retentive medium useful for pots and other types of containers. It’s important to include some organic matter to aid moisture retention. A good soil mix for window boxes is one part soil, one part crumbled compost or peat moss and one part vermiculite or perlite. Watering is critical – small containers dry out quickly, especially in hot, windy weather. Window boxes may need watering daily or even twice a day in summer. How to tell when they need watering? Poke a finger into the soil – if it’s dry it feels dry an inch below the surface, it’s probably time to water. Fertilize every few weeks with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer. To keep the plants blooming and looking their best, pick off old flowers and dead leaves regularly. Then enjoy the charm of your window boxes!

“RED GOLD” — THE HISTORY OF THE LONG ISLAND CRANBERRY BOGS BY ALICE PHILLIPS

T

hey called it “red gold” – and they didn’t mean potatoes, ducks, shellfish or other agricultural products commonly associated with Long Island. Red gold meant cranberries… No discussion about Long Island cranberries can start until there’s a basic understanding of the function of the Pine Barrens. East Enders talk about the “Pine Barrens” all the time, but what are they really? Not just a forest, the Pine Barrens is a unique ecosystem comprised of pitch pine woodlands, pitch pine-oak forests, coastal plain ponds, swamps, marshes, grasslands, and streams which exist above the aquifer (water permeable rock) and serve to purify East End drinking water. In order to thrive, cranberries require acidic soil, a stable supply of fresh water and low-lying areas often formed by glacial deposits – all characteristic features of the Long Island Pine Barrens. Late in the 19th century, some local inhabitants in and around the Pine Barrens recognized that the area provided favorable conditions for cranberry growth, especially along the Peconic River. By the late 1800s, nearly three dozen cranberry bogs existed on Long Island, most along the Peconic River. The largest

18

bog was known as the Woodhull Bog, which was started by the Woodhull brothers in 1885. Cranberry bushes take 4 years to mature until fruit-producing; the brothers harvested their first crop in 1889. By 1892, the Woodhull Cranberry Bog was singlehandedly producing over 21,000 bushels of cranberries each year and continued to be one of the most successful on Long Island for more than 40 years. By the turn of the 20th century, the East End was the 3rd largest cranberry producer in the United States; unfortunately, by mid-century, the East End cranberry growers struggled to remain competitive with other growers in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Wisconsin. Those states had manufacturing infrastructure including flash freezing processing plants; Long Island didn’t have a flash freezing plant and East End cranberries had to be manually sorted, picked and dried. This labor intensive process was expensive and time consuming; by 1976, the last remaining cranberry bog — the Davis Bog in Manorville — finally shuttered its remaining cranberry harvesting operations. The Davis Bog had been in operation since 1879.

stake in the cranberry industry, Long Islanders can still see the remnants of this once booming industry at Riverhead’s Cranberry Bog Nature Preserve, operated by the Suffolk County Parks Department. Cranberry Bog Nature Preserve is a 165-acre preserve located on what remains of the Woodhull Bog just off Lake Avenue in Riverhead. It’s a wonderful place to hike, with sights of the Little Peconic River, various plant life, bird species, reptiles and other local wildlife. The trail is 1.1 miles long, and hikers will come across what’s left of an old Woodhull pump house as well as the wooden bridge crossing over the bog.
