Welcome to the August issue of North Fork Real Estate Showcase. It’s hard to believe that we are half way through another summer! Of course, some of the best months on the North Fork still lie ahead. Featured on this month’s front cover, Gina Galante and Marianne Collins of Brown Harris Stevens present a magnificent soundfront estate on over three acres in Mattituck. With over 8,000 sq. ft. and 150 feet of water frontage, this European style villa is the ultimate North Fork private retreat. This being our special Shelter Island issue, take a look at our showcase feature spotlighting this very unique place. Rachel Bosworth takes an insider’s look at the island in her piece “Living History on Shelter Island.” Protected by the North and South Forks, Shelter Island is a gentle reminder of the slower pace of years gone by here on the East End. Also in this issue, be sure to check out Ruth Thomas’ “Best Deals on the North Fork,” for some truly great real estate opportunities; Anne Halpin’s “Long Bloomers.” for perennials that don’t have to be replanted every year; Samantha McConnell’s “Object Lessons,” featuring local ceramicist Chris Fanjul, who is part of a new wave of clay artisans; Will Hoban’s “Marais Modern,” for what to see and do in one of Paris’ most iconic neighborhoods; and finally back to Shelter Island with Rachel Bosworth’s “Unmatched Waterfront Dining at Pridwin Hotel,” featuring this iconic Gatsby-era lodging and dining venue. Please remember to check out our brand-new website at NorthForkRealEstateShowcase.com for all the latest on the North Fork and Shelter Island real estate scene. Crescent Beach, Shelter Island

LIVING HISTORY ON SHELTER ISLAND EXPLORING THE BEAUTY OF A HIDDEN GEM IN MODERN DAY

O

BY RACHEL BOSWORTH

n the East End, there’s the North Fork and there’s the South Fork, and then there’s a little something in between. Shelter Island was cool before becoming a hashtag on Instagram, you just didn’t know it unless you, well, knew it. Settled in the mid-1650s, around the same time as the towns lining the twin forks, this small town spans less than 30 square miles, and proudly belongs to neither the North Fork or the Hamptons. Shelter Island is its own entity, but at least has two ferries to get you on and off the island, should you ever so choose.

than you may expect with all of the stops you can, and should, make. Enter through the North Ferry from Greenport, the South Ferry from North Haven, or by boat, and you have access to some of the island’s most popular eateries. A historic and grand hotel, Chequit Inn, has undergone a needed facelift in the past few years, and now serves as one of the notable places to both stay and eat. Locals and visitors alike find French-inspired cuisine at Marie Eiffel Market overlooking Dering Harbor, while The Dory offers the true-local experience as a casual, classic American pub.

they encourage thought about the importance of food, culture, and place in our daily lives.

Shelter Island was once inhabited by a peaceful tribe of Native Americans, the Manhanset tribe, that called their home Manhansackaha-quash-awamock, which translates to “an island sheltered by islands.” Quickly inhabited by settlers, much of the island’s history is still present in the modern day, serving as a draw for people to now find their own home on Shelter Island, or just simply come and play.

With words like “local” and “organic” populating nearly every menu, farming and fisheries themselves play an essential role to the Shelter Island way of life. What began as a Native American hunting ground later becoming a historical and educational establishment throughout the course of history, is now known at Sylvester Manor Educational Farm. With a mission of cultivating, preserving, and sharing the land, buildings, and stories of the historical property,

“Our house concerts and historic house tours open the Manor doors to the public to enjoy the most intact plantation home north of Virginia,” Ms. Folks continues. “We encourage visitors to come with their lawn chair, family, friends and picnic baskets for any of our outdoor creek side concerts as well.”

The journey through Shelter Island is longer

“At Sylvester Manor Educational Farm, there is always something going on,” says the organization’s director of programs and community outreach, Kim Folks. “The key for us is to offer diverse programming yearround, and make it as accessible as possible.” With events including concerts with awardwinning musicians on and off premises, Shakespeare themed weekends, and more, there is much to enjoy.

Preservation of the island isn’t just of importance to the locals, but to the health of the environment on and around Shelter

Island. Mashomack Preserve encompasses nearly 2,100 acres and is home to hundreds of species of plants and wildlife. Marked trails are available to hikers only, and visitors are encouraged to only take out what they take in. The Nature Conservancy, which partners with many other environmental organizations, aims to keep the area beautiful and preserved while promoting the enjoyment and conservation of nature to all. A narrow road bordered by water on either side offers a beautiful drive to a secluded little spot that has a lot of – you guessed it – history. The Ram’s Head Inn, just off of Ram Island Drive, was built in 1929 as an inn, and is still used as one today. The original structure echoes with times past as a registered historic physics site. That’s right, in the mid-1940s several physicists held themselves up in the inn as they tackled some of the most important and complex problems of quantum physics, and succeeded in a fundamental understanding of what was previously a mystery to many. On the food side, The Ram’s Head Inn

Sylvester Manor

restaurant serves New American food that focuses on seasonal farm-to-table food, with lots of seafood of course. With executive chef Matt Murphy now at the helm, the season is sure to be a delicious one. “His passion for food and knowledge of the abundance of ‘local delicacies’ make him the perfect fit for the Ram’s Head,” shares owner Linda Eklund. Expect dishes like poached halibut, Long Island Crescent Farms duck confit, and rack of lamb, all accompanied by greens and herbs from the on-premises garden. Should your journey through Shelter Island take you on an alternate route, you will find more inviting restaurants and things to do. Venturing toward Shelter Island Sound you will come upon one hotspot that is very Hamptons-esque; Sunset Beach. Yellow and white awnings and beach umbrellas are the waterfront establishment’s signature, letting boaters know they’ve reached the right place before they even hit the shore. Messy and undone, yet sophisticated and oozing with summer cool, the bikini-clad

and happily tan are mingling in the restaurant and the sand just a few steps across the way. Owned by the famed hotelier André Balasz (think the infamous Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles), the boutique hotel, restaurant and bar offers coastal Italian fare and cuisine reminiscent of the French Riviera. And don’t forget that signature pink summer drink you just can’t say no to; the self-described “house elixir;” a chill glass of rosé. À votre santé! Traveling further down Shore Road, you will find the Pearlman Music Program and the Pridwin Hotel. Other notable establishments on Shelter Island include Vine Street Café, SALT restaurant, Shelter Island Country Club, Gardiner’s Bay Country Club, and seemingly endless beaches with access to numerous bays, harbors, and estuaries. To know the beauty of Shelter Island, you must experience it for yourself. Take the time to explore the ins and outs, sip and dine, and stay and play. Teeming with history and culture, Shelter Island is a gem of a place that no one should pass by.

rom the shores of the North Fork or from a boat traveling the Peconic River from the bay to the sound, a grand white structure sits peacefully atop a hill for all to see that pass by. A steep and lush green lawn spans the front of the building, while large trees shroud the surrounding property. It’s hidden away and protected by the surround waters of Shelter Island, with access granted to those who drive along Shore Road or arrive by boat to one of two docks. This is the Pridwin Hotel. For nearly a century, this American resort spanning ten acres on Crescent Beach has some of the most beautiful sunsets that just don’t seem to feel as magical anywhere else. Dubbed a Gatsby-era hotel, the Pridwin has become a prime location for weddings and other celebrations, weekend getaways, or even just a visit for lunch and dinner. Chef Swainson Brown’s cuisine marries the

26

tastes and flavors of both land and sea on the second level dining room overlooking the water. Touting elegant, rustic, and honest food, Pridwin menus include tuna burgers with roasted tomato, olive aioli, and lettuce; smoked brisket sandwich with barbecue sauce and spicy cucumber pickles; and of course an area favorite, fresh lobster roll with fine herbs, house-made pickles, and truffle mayo for lunch. A draw for many on both the North and South Forks, and Shelter Island residents, is the Wednesday night cookouts. Arrive by land or by sea, and enjoy live music, beer and wine, and an allyou-can-eat cookout menu on the lawn. Steamed clams, mussels, and fresh shrimp alongside grilled marinated tuna, smoked pork spare ribs, and barbecue beef kalbi ribs are just a few of the mouthwatering dishes to expect. Deliciously popular, reservations are strongly recommended as these events are a sellout nearly every week.

Enjoy an intimate evening of jazz on Tuesday nights this summer as well in the dining room. The regular dinner menu is available nightly, with mouthwatering dishes like slow cooked salmon with potato puree, asparagus, oven roasted tomato, and shallot vinaigrette, or coriander-thyme crusted tuna with eggplant caviar, onion tart, and nicoise vinaigrette. You could always opt for that amazing lobster roll too. A thoughtful wine list and specialty cocktails complement every meal night and day. For the weary traveler, or the staycationer, one of 40 rooms in the hotel or a stay at one of the nine cottages will have you feeling world’s away. Steal away to the serene Shelter Island and discover the delights of dining at one of the oldest running establishments on the East End. 81 Shore Road, Shelter Island pridwin.com

LONG BLOOMERS

P

PERENNIALS DON’T NEED TO BE REPLANTED EVERY YEAR

erennials are mainstays of many North Fork flower gardens, and for good reason. Unlike the annual impatiens and petunias and geraniums planted in pots and beds for the summer, perennials don’t need to be replanted every year. Perennials die back to the ground in winter but regrow the following spring. Their many colors from pastels to brights, flower forms and plant heights can be combined to create symphonies of bloom. The only problem with perennials is that most of them bloom for just a few all-too-brief weeks. The rest of the growing season they’re green and leafy. To have color in the flower garden from spring to fall you need to carefully orchestrate flowers with different blooming times to have something blooming throughout the growing season. The results can be breathtaking, but it does require planning, and who has enough time for that? To the rescue come a group of heroic perennials that bloom far longer than the 2- to 3-week average. Many of these stalwarts flower for a month or more, others will bloom again if you cut back the old flower stems when the blossoms fade, some when you trim back the plants themselves, and still others bloom off and on for much of the growing season with no help at all from the gardener. These terrific plants are real workhorses, and adding them to your garden can keep it colorful as other plants come into and out of bloom. Here are some long bloomers to

32

consider including in your flowery landscape beds and borders. They’ve all performed well for me in my own garden and those I’ve cared for across the North Fork. Achillea, or yarrow, bears large, flat-topped clusters of tiny flowers in rich golden yellow, pale yellow, pink, red, orange or white. They bloom atop tall, stiff stems lined with grayish green leaves, through much of the summer. Give them a sunny location, in soil that is well-drained, not soggy. Two personal favorite varieties are Coronation Gold, a classic whose flowers are rich golden yellow, and Moonshine, which has soft yellow flowerheads. Other varieties to look for include Paprika, orange-red like its namesake spice, and Gold Plate, whose flowers have a slightly mounded form. When the flowers fade, cut back the stems to a lower set of leaves, or just cut back the stems by half to stimulate another round of bloom. Daylilies are favorites in many gardens, their trumpet-shaped flowers carried in clusters on tall stems, with each individual flower lasting just a single day. Most varieties bloom for a few weeks, but some, especially lower growing ones such as Stella de Oro and Rosy Returns, will flower all summer. When all the flowers on a stem have finished, cut back the stem to its base and the plant will produce a new stem, and another round of flowers. These plants are nice additions

to the front of the garden. Ask your local nursery or garden center for other related varieties they carry. A real star of the perennial garden, and one that’s super easy to grow, is sedum. The flower garden sedums have thick, fleshy leaves and thick stems, and they slowly develop clusters of tiny florets that as they form look like small heads of broccoli, beginning as light green and gradually deepening over a couple of months to darker green, then turning pinkish, then taking on an orangey tinge that becomes salmon, deepening to rich russet and finally, brown in fall. Some gardeners like to leave the plants in the garden all winter long, standing as sculptures when other plants are gone. The first popular sedum of this type is Autumn Joy, which is still a standout in many gardens, including mine. It has been joined in more recent years by neon pink varieties such as Brilliant, which bring eyepopping color to late summer gardens. Another bonus is that these flowers attract bees, which are endangered now and whose continued survival is critical for pollinating a wide variety of the fruits and vegetables we depend on seeing in our farmers markets and grocery stores. Including these long blooming flowers in your garden is a great way to enjoy color all summer long.

ARTIST SHOWCASE

OBJECT LESSONS LOCAL CERAMICIST CHRIS FANJUL IS PART OF A NEW WAVE OF CLAY ARTISANS

N

orth Fork-based ceramicist Chris Fanjul is a winemaker’s apprentice gone wrong. A former cellar rat at Paumanok Vineyards, in Aquebogue, he quit the business when he realized that owning his own winery wasn’t in his immediate future. Having majored in anthropology in college, the cultural scientist in him longed to make things with his hands. But it wasn’t until 2013, when he attended a pottery workshop at the Brick House Ceramic Art Center, in Long Island City, that he discovered he had a feel for clay. “I loved the nature of the wheel,” he recently recalled from his Mattituck studio in the basement of his home. “It was magic.” He’s in good company for it seems that handmade pottery and ceramics are enjoying a renaissance in a big way. Not the heavy, clunky, chip-your-tooth on a coffee mug ceramics of the Sixties, but a more refined style that takes its design cues from places as far afield as Japan and Scandinavia. There are waiting lists for ceramics classes in Manhattan and Brooklyn, ceramicists who’ve ditched their day jobs to devote themselves to their craft, and celebrity collectors clamoring for their work. Lena Dunham, reports Vogue, cherishes her set of hand-built Seder plates which are rimmed (oy vey) in 22 k gold. As Fanjul notes, “There’s a hunger for

36

hand-made objects in our digitally-driven world.” And, by extension, for things that are imperfect and one-of-a-kind, and for the tactile experience that an electronic screen can’t provide. For ceramicists, there’s the process itself, the primal thrill of firing clay-mud and sand, really--in a kiln at temperatures of up to 2300 degrees fahrenheit.

Many ambitious chefs have been early adopters of the trend, commissioning hand-made plates on which to serve their food. Taylor Knapp, who runs Paw Paw Pop-Up in Greenport, commissioned Fanjul to make the tableware for his tasting menus. He made a set of jadecolored bowls, seven-inch chargers stippled

|

with native clay, and coffee cups into which he pressed black sand from a Cutchogue beach. Fanjul, whose style incorporates elements of both the Japanese and Scandinavian traditions, sells his pieces through word-of-mouth and via his online store on Etsy. (One of the pleasing paradoxes of the ‘maker’ movement is that its growth has been fuelled through social media and the Internet.) As he has deepened his knowledge of craft and technique, he’s acquired an appreciation for the hard-glazed surface of salt-fired clay and the idiosyncratic, unpredictable beauty of atmospheric firing. He finds it gratifying to incorporate small quantities of local stones and clay into his ceramics, but transporting it is hard work. Some it is dug from spots along the South Fork, where the brick industry thrived until the nine-thirties. “I carried seventy-five pounds of clay half a mile down the beach,” he recalls. “I couldn’t move my arms the next day.”

Fanjul remains fascinated by the cultural aspects of pottery. “I hope my work appeals to younger people who seek simplicity in their lives, and also depth,” he reflects. “In our disembodied world, we need objects that are made with intention and serve a purpose beyond the strictly functional. Objects that aren’t disposable.”

A

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN ONE OF PARIS’ MOST ICONIC NEIGHBORHOODS

ugust is an underrated time to visit Paris. In that month, it seems as though half the city has decamped to the beach. The streets are quiet, the blare of traffic having given way to a kind of Sundaymorning hush. And speaking of mornings, one of the nicest ways to spend it is with a stroll around the Marais in the third and fourth arrondissements. Once home to one of the city’s largest Jewish communities, the neighborhood has in recent years been a center of gay life, and, more recently, the favored haunt of the fashion crowd. There’s great shopping, good food, atmospheric cafés, and cobbled streets. Here are our favorite local spots:

38

1. Place des Vosges (Metro: Bastille) and admire the vast arcaded square with blue slate roof tiles, which was commissioned by Henri IV in 1605 and inaugurated in 1612. The Place des Vosges. Visit the Victor Hugo Museum at number 6. The building was once home to the great novelist. A few doors down, at number 11, is the former home of the successful courtesan Marion Delorme (1613 –1650) who kept company with some of the leading lights of the era, including George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, Cardinal Richelieu, and Louis II de Bourbon. 2. Rue des Francs Bourgeois, a long narrow

street just off the Place des Vosges with many fashionable shops, restaurants, and patisseries. On Sundays, it’s closed to vehicles and turns into a pedestrian street. 3.The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme (71 rue du Temple.) Housed in one of the finest private mansions in Paris, the holdings of this gem of a museum include the archives of the Dreyfus Affair, and art works by Chagall, Modigliani, and other important Jewish artists. 4. The Picasso Museum at 5 rue de Thorigny is another must-see. In addition to major

Musee N

paintings by the Cubist genius, the museum’s permanent collection also has works by Degas, Braque, and Matisse. 5. If looking at so much art quickens your acquisitional appetite, head to Broken Arm (12 rue Perrée). The high-fashion concept store showcases the work of both established designers (Raf Simons, Marni, Philip Lim) and up-and-coming talent in a minimalist white setting. 6. Lunch? L’Ilot (4 rue de la Corderie), serves divine shellfish at reasonable prices. To start try the cod roe taramasalata or the house-smoked salmon rillettes. The oysters with smoked Bordier butter are the stuff of last meals. Same goes for the fish soup, made with wild fish. And for dessert, the kouign amann, a traditional Bretagne cake, is particularly good. 7. Forego coffee and wander over to the nearby Marché des Enfants Rouge. Once there, get in line at the Moroccan food stand, and have a glass or two of excellent fresh mint tea. During off-hours, the owners might let you sit at a table. Otherwise, take it to go and walk on.
