Two locations – one on the Main Road and the other on Sound Avenue – makes this farmstand option very convenient for a fall afternoon on the North Fork. Owned and operated by the Reeve family for seven generations, Bayview Farms sits on 150 acres of prime Peconic Bay waterfront. Originally, the Reeve family sold their produce from the back of their truck, later building a small farmstand called “Little Chief”. In 2002, the farmstand was expanded to its current footprint; in 2014, the Reeve family opened the Sound Avenue location in Jamesport. Local produce offerings include sweet corn, sunflowers, lettuce, zucchini, peaches, green beans, melons, tomatoes, eggplant, berries and beets. Pumpkins and mums abound, and weather permitting, roasted corn. Visit Bayview’s market shop for such local NoFo foodstuffs as duckling, cheese and milk. And

Rest and commune with nature mid-field in the shaded pavilions. Visit the farm stores for a variety of lavender gifts and goods, like essential and aromatherapy oils and bath and body products; culinary lavender offerings include Herbes de Provence, fleur de sel and extracts.

Sang Lee Farm

25180 County Rd 48, Peconic Open daily 9:00 am - 6:00 pm (5:00 pm on Wednesday)

to East Moriches and then ultimately to Peconic in 1987. The Lee family continues to take its obligation to the environment and sustainable agriculture very seriously, no longer farming for wholesale and using only Certified Organic Growing Practices. Visit the farmstand for more than 100 varieties of specialty vegetables, heirloom tomatoes, baby greens and herbs as well as such Asian produce as Chinese cabbage, greens and radishes. 12 Acre North Fork Soundfront Permits In Place On Each 6 Acre Lot

North Fork | East Marion. You remember the feeling. You’re on holiday on the coast of some Caribbean isle or on the cliff of a European town overlooking the Mediterranean. Each morning when your head leaves the pillow you know you are on vacation with broad expanses of water dotted with boats and vistas of other shores. Much closer to home, only 100 miles from Manhattan, you can recreate that feeling each and every day when you develop this very private, nearly 12 acre waterfront, meadow-like parcel composed of two 5.7 acres lots spanning 350’ along the North Fork’s Long Island Sound. With all permitting work done on each lot, a savvy buyer would save hundreds of thousands of dollars and months of waiting to begin construction of a significant house, waterside pool, tennis court and even a guest house for those who would undoubtedly flock to help you enjoy your grand, new estate. The low, but stable bluff, provides easy access down a gentle pebbled path to the beach from where you’ll enjoy an abundance of aquatic activities while conversation and laughter will resound around the inevitable nighttime beach fires. The property affords ample opportunity to create your own vineyard, apple orchard or a field of wildflowers through which your driveway will meander right to your front door. Only a few miles from both the ferries of Greenport and Orient Point, this well positioned property provides easy access to everything that has made the North Fork the new sought after destination. At night, go into town for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants overlooking Shelter Island or head to one of the many vineyards for a wine tasting. But on clear evenings, eat early as you might want to get back for some of the most beautiful sunsets anywhere, as the sun seems to disappear somewhere into the Sound leaving the horizon a purplish haze. Best of all, you won’t need a passport, a pat down or a plane ticket. Just get in your car and head East. When you get there, you’ll know...and remember.

SUMMER’S SWAN SONG

WHERE TO SHOP FOR PRODUCE ON THE NORTH FORK THIS FALL BY HANNAH SELINGER

With the cooler weather comes another growing season. The corn will keep giving through October, and the winter squash and melons will continue going strong until the hard frost sets in. As we transition from summer into fall, you may be wondering which farmstands are best for purchasing fall produce.

On the North Fork, there’s hardly a bad answer when it comes to farmstand hopping. But you can be strategic if you’re looking for something in particular in the produce department. From corn to squash to decorative flowers, we know which stands have what. We’ve curated the crème de la crème, when it comes to fall produce on the North Fork. Here’s the ultimate guide to reining in the fall haul.

Capture the last of the fall melons at Wesnofske Farms, in Peconic, a farm known for their superlative fruits. Wesnofske grows tomatoes, corn, squash, and other veggies, but they are a must-visit for some of the best end-of-season watermelons and cantaloupes, and September can be a great time to check in to see what’s still available. For more locally grown fruit, check out Wickham’s Fruit Farm, in Cutchogue, where late-season berries and apples are in season.

You can pick up all the corn and September tomatoes your heart can possibly desire at Sep’s Farm, in East Marion (Sep’s also has an online platform, which specifies which products are grown locally). Also in season in September and October: peppers, potatoes, summer and winter squash, broccoli and cauliflower, and the beginning of root vegetables. While you’re there, consider picking up a fresh pie, too, or some of the farmstand’s New York State-grown grass-fed beef, duck, or chicken.

On the way to the Cross Sound Ferry, in Orient, find Latham Farms, where you can meet all of your floral needs. In September, Latham’s dahlias are at their peak, so consider this the perfect time to purchase a bouquet of these stunning blooms for your home. The farmstand also sells preserved goods, fresh fruit (look for prune plums, September’s jewel), and vegetables, of course.

In Southold, KK The Farm is a biodynamic farm run by KK and Ira Hapsel. In September, you can find some of the North Fork’s finest tomatoes at KK, along with sunflowers and zinnias. It’s worth the stop for these three items alone. (The farm also sells homemade Bloody Mary kits, potatoes, mushrooms, beets, garlic, and more.)

Find some less traditional produce in Peconic, at Sang Lee Farms. This iconic farm has been growing Asian varieties for years, and it’s a goto for produce that is not grown anywhere else on Long Island (daikon radish, Japanese sweet potato, fresh ginger, Korean moo radish, just to name a few). When it comes to cabbage, radish, and obscure root vegetables, this is the place to be. Sang Lee is also certified organic, and takes great care in managing the health of their farm. Come for the daikon, stay for the prepared foods, late-season tomato varieties, and even the sweet melons. Bon appétit.

THE GARDEN IN FALL

Overthe past couple of years many of us have been spending more time at home. We’re doing more cooking, baking, and lots of gardening.

Gardening is a rewarding and even healing activity, and also gives us the benefit of freshpicked food, beautiful flowers and soothing greenery, not to mention time spent in the fresh air instead of in front of a screen. It can also be a source of gentle exercise. Pulling weeds and cutting off old, faded blossoms from the plants in your garden is rewarding. The plants look better for it, and the repetition of such a simple activity lets your mind rest, and worries recede, at least for a while. Here are some things to do in your garden and landscape this fall.

First, water deeply when the weather is dry. And especially, make sure your shrubs and other permanent plants are well watered as the weather cools before they go into dormancy for the winter. Lay fresh mulch in garden beds and borders. Have the hedges trimmed. Watch for signs of pests and diseases. Fertilize and aerate the lawn if it

wasn’t done in spring. Keep the lawn mowed as needed.

If you have a flower garden, take time to remove old faded flowers. Don’t just snip off the flowerhead. On a bushy plant, cut back the stem to the nearest set of leaves, or cut the stems back to their base if the stems are long and straight. If your garden includes lilies, cut them back to the ground when the stalks die back. Plan ahead for flowers next spring by planting bulbs of daffodils, crocuses, and tulips if deer are not present on your property. Plant pansies, too — many local nurseries and garden centers sell them in fall, and fall-planted pansies often bloom again in early spring.

When impatiens and other annual flowers (that don’t survive over winter) die back, pull them and, if they’re not damaged by pests or disease, put them on the compost pile. Clean up the garden beds and borders. Add some compost to the soil.

In the herb garden, cut stems of plants like thyme, oregano, tarragon and basil to dry for

winter use; parsley loses much of its flavor when dried. The best time to harvest herbs for drying is late morning, just before noon when volatile oils that give herbs their flavor are a maximum concentration. Hot afternoon sun will draw out some of the oils. Tie the stems in bunches and hang in a warm, dark place to dry — I use my attic.

If you have a rose garden, water when the weather is dry. Watch for signs of pests and disease and take action if you notice damage. Pick up any fallen leaves. Fertilize roses one last time six weeks before the average date of the first fall frost. If you plan to add some new roses to your garden, dig planting holes for them, and plant them when the weather cools.

If you have rhododendrons, boxwood or other broad-leaved evergreens, spray them with an antidesiccant produce to protect them from drying winter winds.

For vegetable gardeners, it’s time to clean up the garden when the plants finish producing. If you grew pumpkins or winter squash, harvest them before the first frost. Take down trellises and stakes, clean and store them for next year. Spread compost in empty parts of the garden.

Fall can be a time for planting, too. You can plant ornamental grasses and groundcovers, as well as new trees and shrubs. Be sure to water new plants regularly if we don’t get rain — it has been a dry summer this year.

When it’s time to rake fall leaves, if you have kids be sure to leave the piles around for a while for jumping into. Better yet, get the kids to help rake and re-rake the piles for more jumping.

When the garden is put to bed, you can start thinking about what new plants to add to your landscape next year.

OPEN MIND

was so funny to walk into this mall and then having this totally different experience.”

For Clark her art also expresses her life philosophy. “I love what creativity does for the brain. It opens up physically and metaphorically another part of our brain. As adults we tend to ignore that. When we are open ended and abstract, we see through our intuition and feelings as well as our eyes. Abstraction is a gateway to living intuitively and emotionally. My expression is part of learning to live very openly and empathetically and when people see my work, I hope they can see and feel some of that.”

NaomiClark embarked on her artistic journey by thinking outside the box, literally. An avid snow boarder from Colorado, she started college with an industrial design major but when she botched her box making assignment twice she decided, “I don’t think that precision work is where I was meant to be.” This change in focus led her to a major in painting at the University of Colorado, Boulder and opened up a whole new world. “Painting immediately felt like home,” Clark explains, “I love the freedom and expression, color and lack of boundaries.” She continued with a graduate degree at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and spread her wings and canvases from painting murals on her walls to reinventing paintings as household objects.

Clark even had the chance to recreate a Victoria’s Secret store as an art installation. A 1980’s mall in South Street Seaport was set to be demolished after flooding from Hurricane Sandy and artists were invited to transform the different stores into their own visions. “I was given the store which was 10,000 square feet with pink carpet,” she says, “I painted the whole thing: the ceiling, the floors, the checkout counter and built different installations. It

Painting has been a road to many different projects for Clark. With her friends Nana Spears and Noah Spencer she formed New York-based Fort Makers in 2008, “a playful, multidisciplinary and immersive art brand,” which features hand-made objects across different disciplines, everything from furniture to table top to jewelry to lighting to textiles.

“We had a mutual love for looking at objects as art and through many different lenses from what we wear to what we live with,” Clark comments. The artistic collaboration includes design partnerships, stage and interiors.

Clark thinks not only out of the box but out of the gallery. After living in Colorado with “about one week of greenery,” she found great

solace in the lushness of the East End including the water. “I like to take artwork out to the Sound and find different ways to float things and photograph them.” Having support as an artist is also a key to success and aside from finding her audience on social media she also takes a “boots on the ground” approach to connect in person with other artists and shows. Gallerist Jonathan Weiskopf of VSOP Projects in Greenport discovered her work and became a great resource. Clark comments, “He has a wide breadth of work he shows. He is an art enthusiast and art professional and an artist. He sees it through all those different lenses.” For her show at his gallery at 311 Front Street which runs October 1 to November 13, she will display different forms of work from paintings to water mobiles to painted fabric as well as pop-up installations around Greenport.

To achieve goals as an artist Clark acknowledges a deep sense of intentionality. She abides by the adage, “creativity shouldn’t be left for the stolen moments.” She says, “I make art in my life a priority, not something I get to after everything else is done. We have all these things to do, tasks to perform and we forget to nurture our creative side. I hope my work can help people to do that.”

A DESK OF ONE’S OWN

“The pandemic changed people’s working habits profoundly. At this stage, even though many of our clients are back to their offices, the time that people WFH is much longer than before,” says Alex Xie of Stelle, Lomont, Rouhani Architects.

“Working space at home is more demanding; not necessarily a home office, but a multi-function room with desk surface, Peloton bike, and murphy bed that can support more at-home activity can also be ideal for WFH. And enclosed spaces enable people to have virtual meetings without disturbing others sharing the living space.”

A desk is the starting point. “We like desks that are modest and can blend in with the existing design easily. But that also depends on the clients’ needs; for instance, a more practical desk is preferred if the client has more than one monitor in the office,” says Xie.
