Why Choose North Fork?

The transparency and clarity contained within the NFWW proposal far surpassed anything we received elsewhere. Additionally, Scott and Kyle were both flexible and positive about very particular items we were adamant about using and constructing...The resulting product of all their efforts is a home that is truly our dream home, one we had envisioned for 20 years. I can’t thank them enough for being in business!”

Greenport’s 34th Annual Maritime Festival

Greenport’s Annual Maritime Festival celebrates all things nautical and marks the end of the summer season on the East End. Cosponsored by Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital and benefitting the East End Seaport Museum, this annual event is scheduled for the weekend of September 21-22. In addition to the Parade and all the fun, this annual Festival serves an important, historical purpose by showcasing Greenport’s maritime heritage through displays of traditional boat-building techniques, maritime artifacts, and historical exhibits, ensuring that the region’s naval legacy remains alive and celebrated.

The Land & Sea Gala – the traditional Friday night kick-off to the weekend’s events and fundraiser for the East End Seaport and Marine Foundation – has had a change of date as well as a change in location. Now scheduled for the prior Friday evening (September 14) at its new location at Safe Harbor Greenport Boatyard, 500 Beach Road, Greenport, the Gala has very limited tickets. VIP tickets cost $225 with early admission at 5:30 p.m.; general admission tickets are $175 with access to the Gala at 6:30 p.m.

The first 150 VIP attendees will receive a limited edition commemorative poster; discounts for Museum members are available for a limited time. For the last several years, tickets have sold out prior to the event so it’s not likely that tickets will be available at the door. For additional information, to buy tickets and/or join the Museum, visit eastendseaport.org. Proceeds from the Gala go to support the East End Seaport Museum (located at 103 3rd Street), the Village Blacksmith Shop (located at First and Front Streets behind the Schoolhouse) and the Long Beach Bar Lighthouse (more familiarly known as the “Bug Light”). Sponsors include Claudio’s Greenport, Portobello Restaurant, LiV Vodka and other local restaurants and businesses.

Following the Land & Sea Gala will be a rocking after party at Claudio’s Greenport. Just take a stroll down the street to the Claudio’s wharf for more cocktails, live music and dancing! Additional details available at claudios.com.

Without a doubt, Saturday’s highlight is the Merry Merfolk Parade! Starting at 11am, the parade will wend its way down Main Street to Front Street. Be on the lookout for the Merry Merfolk Boat Float, as well as the usual East End parade participants: donkeys, floats, fire trucks, representatives of local fire departments, social clubs, American Legion halls, Girls Scout and Boy Scout troops – and plenty of marching bands. Come show your support of our local waters dressed as your favorite sea creature, mermaid or pirate while helping to draw attention to the importance of the marine ecosystem. There’s an awards ceremony following the parade, with prizes for best costume and other categories. For more details visit eastendseaport.org

After the parade, wander among more than 100 artisan craft and food vendors selling their wares throughout the Village on both Saturday and Sunday; if you’ve got kids with you, head for Captain Kid’s Alley in Mitchell Park for games, arts & crafts and a treasure chest. Also on the schedule: kayak and cardboard regatta races, sea shanty performances and lots of live music. Look for high-stepping Irish dance performances on Saturday and Sunday, as well as coffee sack races. Saturday wraps up with DJ music and dancing in Mitchell Park Bandshell from 7-9 pm. At the waterfront, see classic wooden boats or participate in kayak races; along Front Street and in Mitchell Park, see wood carving and model ship building demonstrations. Don’t forget to take a spin on the historic Greenport Carousel. Rides are $2.50; win a free ride by grabbing the golden ring!

Not interested in all the fanfare of the Festival?

Browse the many shops and galleries along Main Street and Front Street. The Nova Constellatio Gallery at 419 Main Street features the work of local artist Isabel Haran Leonardi; grab a drink while viewing the latest exhibits at The Gallery Hotel, a boutique hotel located nearby at 439 Main Street. VSOP Art & Design Projects at 311 Front Street features artwork in multiple media alongside a selection of modern and vintage objets d’art and furniture. Other galleries: Roysendpost (18 South Street), Natali/Keyes Gallery (207 Main Street) and The South Street Gallery (18 South Street).

Looking for other things to do? At any time you can visit the Tall Ship Columbia or visit the classic wooden boats and ice boats out on the docks. Or take a harbor cruise on the classic ship Glory, a completely green, solar-powered tour boat. Head to one of Greenport’s numerous restaurants or bars or browse the boutiques and shops along Main and Front Streets. Just don’t forget to wear your mermaid tail…

Where to eat before and after the Maritime Festival

Every September, Greenport hosts the epic Maritime Festival, a weekend-long party, of sorts, with street vendors, activities, a gala, and plenty of things to see, do, and, yes, eat. But after the Festival is over, you may want to grab a sit-down bite at an actual restaurant. Greenport proper can get crowded during this weekend event, but that doesn’t mean that the North Fork isn’t full of delicious options when it comes to Festival time. Read on for some of our favorite options for 2024, and don’t forget to eat early and often.

At Nookies, the new year-round spot operating from the iconic Silver Sands Motel, elevated diner cuisine is all the rage. An all-day morning menu includes breakfast sandwiches, homemade biscuits, and superlative hash browns, as well as locally harvested oysters (they appear in an oyster chowder, and also on the half-shell, with a mignonette). Smash

burgers. Fish and chips. BLTs. The menu is nothing if not a recitation of delicious comfort classics, executed with precision, but still made in a way that feels neither stuffy nor derivative. It’s a delight to dine at a place like this in the wake of an equally casual street festival. Take our word for it.

Legends Restaurant, long a New Suffolk standby, has recently changed hands, and the new iteration is a welcome refresh. It’s a cozier version of the previous Legends, with a menu that feels thoughtful, though not erudite. There’s a small emphasis on seafood, with a raw bar section that favors classics like tuna tartare, shrimp cocktail, and little necks on the half-shell. From there, the menu is very much bistro-style, with proteins (steaks, chicken, fish) cooked a la carte, and offered with accompanying sauces and sides.

Continue the party that is the Maritime Festival with dinner at the brand-new Branch Brewing Co., in Mattituck. The beautiful and spacious taproom offers plenty of craft beers on-tap, as well as a petite menu that complements the scenic space. Smokehouse

pulled pork sliders are served with piping hot fries, the farmstand arugula salad comes with tomatoes and goat cheese, and the Bavarian pretzel is amplified by an outrageous house-made beer cheese sauce, perfect for dipping. Branch Brewing also serves up a variety of delectable flatbreads — fig jam and arugula; bacon, chicken, and ranch; and even Neapolitan — for those who prefer to have myriad culinary options before them.

If you do opt to stay in downtown Greenport, that’s great, too. At Ellen’s on Front, which is within walking distance from the whole Festival, dig into a plate of honey butter chips with honey butter sauce; grilled shishito peppers with sesame miso and cotija cheese; and pork bao buns with kimchi and cucumber. The sweet tea-brined fried chicken is a go-to for a reason (it comes with hot sauce honey butter, and, for a little extra, a choice of two sides), but you won’t be disappointed with the braised lamb flatbread, either, which is served with grilled peaches, burrata, pickled red onion, and a parsley and mint salad.

Step into the North Fork’s hottest new “Tasting Room” where the elegance of the 1920s meets modern sophistication.

Oenophiles rejoice! A stunning new tasting room has opened, nestled in the scenic heart of the North Fork in Jamesport. Main & Mill House offers a picturesque escape into Long Island’s rich wine culture with 66 acres of vines located nearby Main & Mill Vineyards in Mattituck, New York.

Main & Mill House recently opened to the public this summer with a completely reimagined Main Road property that last played host to Sherwood House tasting room in Jamesport. The ownership team behind Main & Mill are the über popular Croteaux and Rose Hill vineyards in Southold and Mattituck. “Welcome to our third gem: Main & Mill House,” shares the team. “Step into our new tasting room, where the elegance of the 1920s meets modern sophistication, designed exclusively for those who seek an unparalleled, high-end experience on the North Fork.”

Engage with a story that harmonizes tradition with sophistication, inviting you to become an integral part of a tale that blends the timeless heritage of the North Fork with modern opulence and elegance. Main & Mill Vineyard’s interior is a thoughtful blend of the old and the new, reflecting both the vineyard’s agricultural roots and its forward-thinking approach to winemaking.

The space has been updated throughout, and for all seasons. The

interior design of Main & Mill House perfectly embodies the elegance that defines the North Fork wine region. Designers Brooke Cantone and John Mazur of LUMBER+Salt created the stunning space. LUMBER+Salt in Jamesport is a renowned treasure trove of antiquities and design specializing in creating a raw and refined aesthetic that speaks to both a preservation of the past and a sustainability for the future. They share, “We wanted to create a space that feels a little Beverly Hills Hotel, meets Chateaux Marmont, meets Fifth Avenue Hotel on the North Fork.”

Stepping into the tasting room, visitors are immediately struck by the warm, welcoming atmosphere, which combines the charm of the original 1890s farmhouse with a contemporary aesthetic. The blue velvet couches anchoring the marble fireplace make it cozy and homelike, paired with a regal bar that was created from architectural salvage from the Italian Embassy. The rooms are filled with many iconic landmark hotel nods throughout.

The vineyard also offers a carefully curated selection of light fare designed to complement the wines. The menu typically includes caviar & tater tots, pigs in a blanket and a variety of artisanal cheeses, charcuterie boards, fresh bread, and seasonal produce sourced from local farms. The focus on local, fresh ingredients in their food offerings reflects the vineyard’s commitment to sustainability and community, creating an experience that is as authentic as it is delicious!

To complement the wine tasting experience this property is also home to the fine arts gallery, William Ris Gallery, and quiet luxury fashion brand thesalting hosted by LUMBER+Salt. So much to enjoy!

Sustainability, Biophilic Design, and Multifunctional Space: The Architectural Trends of 2024

As architects move into a new and improved era of design, their focus has shifted toward sustainability, green spaces, and a more flexible way of living. This year, we’re exploring the architectural trends of 2024, including what’s new, what’s hot, and what’s on the minds of architects and homeowners across the country and across the North Fork.

Over the course of the past few years, sustainability has become increasingly important to homeowners when is has come to home design. Architects have also been taking steps to ensure that their work is carbon-neutral, eliminating greenhouse gases in their building and seeking to contribute less to factors associated with climate change. One way to do this has been through the incorporation of eco-friendly materials into home design. Expect to see even more reclaimed wood, recycled steel, bamboo, and even recycled plastic as substitutes for traditional hardwoods, which can result in deforestation and other wide-scale carbonemitting events.

Tied into this trend is vintage design.

Vintage — or salvaged — tile, countertops, and even pieces of older homes rescued from estate sales are showing up in new builds, as consumers become more conscious about consumption and about their role in creating new paths toward building and toward creating. Architects, too, have become savvy marketers of the restoration of older goods, and this trend is only growing with a younger market of buyers.

Other sustainability initiatives in home design include an increased reliance on smart technologies, which not only improve a home’s wow factor, but also can enhance energy efficiency and functionality. Homes with smart capability can adapt to a homeowner’s needs, using less energy during times when no one is home, and conserving valuable resources. Smart technology can also be used to reduce waste in a refrigerator, to assist in cooking (saving valuable energy there, too), and even as a home alert system, saving a homeowner money, time, and resources.

Biophilic design — the idea of connecting people to nature in architecture — has

risen in popularity this year. Living walls, potted plants, and earth-based materials are capturing the hearts and minds of homeowners and architects alike. Bringing a little of nature inside is a great way to promote sustainability, and it has reinforced the design trend of the past few years: neutral spaces that draw the eye toward the surroundings, as opposed to maximalist indoor spaces.

Beginning during the pandemic, flexible design remains a central and popular theme among architects and homeowners alike. Singularly dedicated spaces — an office that is only an office, for instance, or a media room that is only a media room — are no longer as popular as they were five or 10 years ago. Designers now seek to make rooms as purposeful as possible, full of possibility. Homeowners may need to change the use of a room down the line, may decide they want to use a space differently, or may want to use a room for more than one purpose in a designated period of time, and so flexible use spaces are becoming increasingly popular in the design and execution of homes.
