Why Choose North Fork?
The transparency and clarity contained within the NFWW proposal far surpassed anything we received elsewhere. Additionally, Scott and Kyle were both flexible and positive about very particular items we were adamant about using and constructing...The resulting product of all their efforts is a home that is truly our dream home, one we had envisioned for 20 years. Take lunch or dinner outside at these stunning outdoor dining spots on the North Fork
BY HANNAH SELINGER
The North Fork is lovely, magical, and practically perfect in July, August, and September. And although many of the restaurants we love are great indoors, the summer and early fall months are also an ideal time to take your dinner outside. With café-style seating, waterfront options, and everything in between, this Fork is the place to go if you’re thinking of dining al fresco. As far as where to go when the weather warms up, we’ve compiled some of our most beloved spots that have outdoor options. Read on for our outdoor dining recommendations for this season.
At 1943 Pizza Bar, in Greenport, you can have your pie and eat it, too. Although the pizza oven makes for a devilishly hot companion, you won’t have to worry about that while sitting on the restaurant’s petite outdoor patio. There, enjoy Neapolitan-style, 14-inch,
wood-fired pies, all cooked off in a domed oven (you can still admire it from the passthrough; the windows open to the restaurant inside). The pizza hot spot offers classics, like a margherita with fresh mozzarella, and even bar snacks, like bewitching meatballs, also cooked off in the wood oven.
In Orient Point, Duryea’s, open only during the season, draws diners who are eager to spend afternoons and evenings out on the water. With its own beach club, a dock that welcomes those approaching by sea, and a dining area outfitted in neutrals and shades of blue, Duryea’s is the ultimate summer hangout for anyone in need of a little outdoor summer respite. Views of Gardiner’s Bay abound, as does the consummate selection of lobster rolls, raw shellfish, crudités, and Mediterranean spreads. With a glass of rosé in hand and your feet in the sand — the Beach Bar is perfect for a cocktail before or after dinner, in fact — there’s no denying that this spot provides one of the best outdoor dining experiences on the North Fork.
With a slightly more urban feel — if you can
define Greenport as urban — Pearl Restaurant & Bar, on Main Street, offers up Koreaninflected tapas with a heavy emphasis on local seafood. Inside, an intimate restaurant awaits, but diners can also sit on the outdoor patio, overlooking the street itself. Shrimp and chive dumplings (served with a ginger-soy dipping sauce), sweet-and-sour glazed pork ribs, and a bulgogi beef stir-fry are all standouts on a menu that prides itself on local sourcing and the thoughtful and considered execution of dishes.
And, for a more casual meal, there’s always Jack’s Shack, the seasonal spot at the Sound View, in Greenport. This poolside spot offers delightful bites, like a fluke ceviche made with passion fruit, coconut milk, red onion, cucumber, and cilantro; a hearty lobster roll amplified by a tarragon aioli and served on a toasted brioche bun; and a sweet pea hummus with roasted garlic, mint, lemon, and Tajin. Wash it all down with a Jungle Bird: dark rum, pineapple, Campari, lime, and demerara sugar. And make sure to come when the day is sunny and clear, so you can enjoy the best of the summer weather.

Make your outdoor dinners better than ever this summer.
This summer, you can make your outdoor space a space to remember with a few simple upgrades. Investing in a few bespoke pieces — from furniture to accents to select hardscaping — can help improve the overall feel of your outdoor dining space. Here’s where to start.
Consider the lighting first. Although candlelight is a great way to dine, you may want to think through a more permanent structure, particularly if you have a long table beneath a pergola, awning, or deck. Edison string bulbs are one way to go, but
you can also install an outdoor chandelier with the help of an electrician, which adds sophistication and whimsy to any outdoor dining area (for outdoor-appropriate lighting options, check out Visual Comfort & Co., which has a Southampton showroom; the retailer also sells products online, like the midcentury-style Hilo outdoor chandelier, and the farmhouse-style Allier outdoor chandelier).
Although you may not want a firepit within the actual confines of your dining or seating area, new-and-improved tabletop fire features can bring warmth — and warm vibes — to any dinner party. Solo Stove makes several small sizes of tabletop stove, and they are even available in different colorways, allowing you to match the stove to your outdoor décor. Heat diffusers, which are sold separately, can be used to help warm up an entire dining area. And, at the end of a meal, you can even invite guests to toast marshmallows over them, right at the table.
Add the feeling of indoors to your outdoor dining scene with a cozy rug. West Elm’s indoor/outdoor rugs come in a variety of colors and sizes (the bright blue or bright yellow Marimekko Papajo indoor/outdoor rug, available in sizes up to 9 x 12, is a stunning example) and can make your dining
BY HANNAH SELINGER
space outside feel just as cozy and intimate as your indoor dining room. To add to the coziness and intimacy of the space, consider matching the linens of your dining space to your chosen rug. Throw pillows, blankets, and even linen outdoor napkins can bring the entire look together.
Shade your outdoor dining area — and make it more private — with the addition of an umbrella or pergola. A large umbrella with an adjustable stand can provide screening from the rest of the yard and can section off the space so that it feels like its own serene dining area. Patio.com, in Southampton, offers a wide array of high-quality umbrella options for in-person shopping.
Or, if you have the space, opt for a pergola, where you can train vines up the sides for added shade (and a touch of floral décor). Those interested in building a pergola may want to consider working with a specialist like Walpole Outdoors. Their expert staff can transform professional drawings, simple sketches, or ideas into custom structures that perfectly complement your taste, needs, and the architecture of your space. Additionally, Walpole offers complimentary design services, ensuring that every detail aligns with your vision for a seamless integration into your outdoor environment.
Permits In Place On Each 6 Acre Lot
LOT
1 LOT 2
You remember the feeling. You’re on holiday on the coast of some Caribbean isle or on the cliff of a European town overlooking the Mediterranean. Each morning when your head leaves the pillow you know you are on vacation with broad expanses of water dotted with boats and vistas of other shores. Much closer to home, only 100 miles from Manhattan, you can recreate that feeling each and every day when you develop this very private, nearly 12 acre waterfront, meadow-like parcel composed of two 5.7 acres lots spanning 350’ along the North Fork’s Long Island Sound. With all permitting work done on each lot, a savvy buyer would save hundreds of thousands of dollars and months of waiting to begin construction of a significant house, waterside pool, tennis court and even a guest house for those who would undoubtedly flock to help you enjoy your grand, new estate. The low, but stable bluff, provides easy access down a gentle pebbled path to the beach from where you’ll enjoy an abundance of aquatic activities while conversation and laughter will resound around the inevitable nighttime beach fires. The property affords ample opportunity to create your own vineyard, apple orchard or a field of wildflowers through which your driveway will meander right to your front door. Only a few miles from both the ferries of Greenport and Orient Point, this well positioned property provides easy access to everything that has made the North Fork the new sought after destination. At night, go into town for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants overlooking Shelter Island or head to one of the many vineyards for a wine tasting. But on clear evenings, eat early as you might want to get back for some of the most beautiful sunsets anywhere, as the sun seems to disappear somewhere into the Sound leaving the horizon a purplish haze. Best of all, you won’t need a passport, a pat down or a plane ticket. Just get in your car and head East. When you get there, you’ll know...and remember.
6 Wellness Trends to Embrace in Home Design.
BY
In recent years, the concept of wellness has transcended traditional notions of health and fitness to encompass a holistic approach to living that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As people increasingly prioritize wellness in their lives, this trend is also influencing home design. From incorporating natural elements to embracing technology for relaxation and mindfulness, here are some of the latest wellness trends in home design.
BIOPHILIC DESIGN
Biophilic design is all about bringing nature indoors. This trend emphasizes the use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, and plants, to create a sense of connection to the natural world. Biophilic design can include features like living green walls, indoor gardens, and large windows that offer views of nature. These elements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a home but also promote a sense of calm and well-being.
MINDFUL SPACES
Creating spaces that promote mindfulness and relaxation is another key trend in wellnessfocused home design. This can include dedicated meditation rooms, yoga studios, or simply cozy nooks where homeowners can unwind and de-stress. Design elements like soft
lighting, comfortable seating, and soothing colors can help create a tranquil atmosphere conducive to relaxation and reflection.
SMART TECHNOLOGY FOR WELLNESS
Technology is increasingly being used to enhance wellness in the home. Smart lighting systems that mimic natural daylight patterns can help regulate circadian rhythms and improve sleep quality. Similarly, smart thermostats can create optimal indoor environments for comfort and well-being. Apps and devices that promote mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation are also becoming more popular, allowing homeowners to easily incorporate wellness practices into their daily routines.
AIR AND WATER QUALITY
Improving indoor air and water quality is a growing concern for many homeowners, especially those with allergies or respiratory issues. Design features like air purifiers, water filtration systems, and natural ventilation can help create a healthier indoor environment. Additionally, incorporating plants into the home can help improve air quality and add a touch of nature to indoor spaces.
ERGONOMIC AND ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN
Wellness-focused design also encompasses
considerations for ergonomics and sustainability. Ergonomic furniture and layouts can help reduce physical strain and promote better posture and comfort. Eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient appliances can reduce the home’s environmental impact and create a healthier living space for occupants.
PERSONALIZED WELLNESS SPACES
As wellness becomes increasingly personalized, homeowners are seeking ways to customize their living spaces to meet their specific needs and preferences. This can include features like adjustable lighting, sound systems, and temperature controls that can be tailored to individual preferences. Creating personalized wellness spaces allows homeowners to create environments that support their unique wellness goals and lifestyles.
Overall, the latest wellness trends in home design reflect a growing awareness of the importance of creating spaces that promote health, happiness, and well-being. By incorporating natural elements, embracing smart technology, and prioritizing comfort and sustainability, homeowners can create living spaces that not only look beautiful but also support their overall wellness goals.

You Know You Love Your Pool When You Build It
A House.
BY HEATHER SENISON
On the North Fork, pool houses aren’t a new trend, but how they’re designed changed with the stay-athome culture ushered in by the pandemic, designers say. Once utilitarian spaces to store towels, tools and noodles, they’ve morphed into multifunctional living spaces where you can watch TV, have a drink and eat. “Pool houses have become more of an extension of the home and another place of solace,” said interior designer Debra Geller.
“With so many people spending more extended amounts of time at home, and therefore wanting to make their homes as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, pool houses definitely surged in demand and value,” said Kathy Kuo, founder and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home. “The trend towards upgrading poolside patios and pool houses — and turning them into chic and comfortable sanctuaries — fit naturally into this movement of making the most of a home’s amenities and luxuries,” she said.
Nothing sums up indoor/outdoor living like a pool house, added Amy Kalikow, founder of Amy Kalikow Design. These days, they’re often built “with large sliding doors so you feel a part of the outdoors while being indoors,” she said.
POOL HOUSE MUST-HAVES
When asked for the one thing that must be in a pool house, Geller’s response was quick: “A washer/dryer.” And don’t forget, added Kuo: it is a pool area, and dangers abound. “It’s necessary to provide proper safety precautions in and around the pool area especially if you have children,” she said. “It’s
Sufficient storage for towels, pool toys and furniture, when it needs to come in, is key too, designers said, as are flooring and carpets that can hold up to high traffic and moisture.
DON’T FORGET THE AESTHETIC
When it comes to what a pool house should look like, “it depends on what you’re using it for,” Kalikow said. Some of her clients want an outdoor spa, so their pool houses include features like a sauna and massage area. In a recent project, she focused on ample storage to keep the interior nice and neat. “We extended the millwork to incorporate more storage so everything was put away and accessible,” she explained. “You want to feel relaxed at home so having clutter around is never a great idea.”
Some trends have sunk in the last few years — thankfully, Kuo said. “I think we’ve seen the last of pool areas with different colored lights and over-the top tropical or nautical design motifs,” she noted. “The most stylish and serene pool houses serve as a graceful extension of both the pool itself and the interior design of the main house.”
But it doesn’t have to be too matchy-matchy,
Geller added. “I usually make them similar to the main house but a little bit different,” she said of her pool house designs. “Sometimes I try to make them a little architecturally different and a bit more funky so it’s complementary but not the same.”
THINK OUTSIDE THE ‘HOUSE’
Be creative with your ideas, designers said. After all, the typical household pool is the center of fun.
For a recent client on the North Fork, Geller included a full kitchen with a walk-up bar window, “like at the beach,” she said. With that approach, folks can hang in the shade but partake in the poolside activities, she explained.
“My team and I recently worked on a gorgeous pool house that is the ultimate combination of stylish and functional,” Kuo added. The property features a white house surrounded by lush greenery with an expansive outdoor space perfect for al fresco dinner parties, she recalled. Organic materials and a neutral color scheme accommodated a wabi-sabi scheme both in the main home and the pool house. “The effect was relaxing and elevated,” Kuo said. “It made the pool house feel like a natural and effortless extension of the home as a whole.”
The Art of Gavin Zeigler
BY HEATHER BUCHANAN
For artist Gavin Zeigler time is not necessarily linear but layered. His studio of 22 years on Shelter Island is an old auto body shop he discovered while riding by on his motorcycle. Pictures dating back to the 1920’s show it in its heyday, and the bays where cars were repaired or painted hold the energy of the past. His mixed media paintings also bear the imprint of human touch over time.
What appears from a distance as a beautiful abstract painting upon closer inspection reveals pennies or keys or various paper objects from stamps to old stock certificates to cancelled checks transformed with paint and design into a compelling collage.
“I collect old documents from family and friends in Tennessee who would buy them before they were shredded. I love the quality of the paper and the random marks and signatures. There’s a history and act of discovery that is central to my work. It is not only about the color and composition but how many times someone has held the objects incorporated into it.”
Zeigler had a thirty-year retrospective where famed gallerist Peter Marcell commented, “Gavin immediately stood out to me because of his innovation and ingenuity. There is no question that he is a skilled artist, but his brilliance lies in his fresh, creative spirit.”
Zeigler’s training reflects his range of talents, “I had a scholarship to the Atlanta School of Art then came up to New York and got a certificate of graphic design from Pratt and a degree in art history from Fordham then went to woodworking school in Maine.”
The act of choosing one of his 8” x 10” cradled wooden panels is an entertaining process in itself, with tables full of them enclosed in labeled cardboard boxes. An incredible wordsmith, Zeigler names each work with titles including: They give you this but you paid for that, Purple pain, Hell no, Trouble sleeping, or Passive aggressive. “People really get a kick out of it – they come in and ask what is in there, often drawn first to the title then the work.” Each of these individual pieces can also be mixed and matched from grouping of a few to filling
a whole wall. Zeigler describe his process, “I start with collage material then paint on top of it. They start off as a panel and I gesso them and sand them and apply what I want to use in epoxy and then put them in a bag press to flatten them.”
This continuous act of layering keeps presenting fresh perspectives to the viewer. There is an organization however to the chaos of 1,000 pieces in titled cardboard boxes and the raw materials including the old documents and acrylic paint. Zeigler says with a smile that although some ask if he is a hoarder, he knows exactly where each element belongs. While having exhibited and been collected locally to internationally, he still finds his intriguing studio on the main stretch on Shelter Island to be a source of buyers. “I have an open studio on the weekend and you never know who’s going to come in. Once it was a German princess and her husband who was in Hollywood who strolled in.”
While time may not seem linear in the endlessly fascinating studio, neither is the process for Zeiger. “I will have forty paintings out at the same time on the table – it’s easier than one staring at you. Even though not alike they talk to each other and learn from each other.” So, what is the most difficult part of the passion project? “It’s an interesting process because you have to know when to stop – when enough is enough. It’s all in the way they dance together.”
