Welcome to the May issue of North Fork Real Estate Showcase. Featured on this month’s front cover, John Vitello of Brown Harris Stevens presents Willow Tree Farm, a premier equestrian facility located in the heart of the North Fork. This 21 plus acre property is comprised of two separate lots, including a 17-acre horse farm with an indoor riding arena, outdoor riding ring, 24 individual stalls, tack rooms and indoor riding arena. Included in the sale is a renovated farmhouse on a separate 4.5 acre lot. This could be your perfect opportunity to live the equestrian lifestyle on the North Fork! This being our Garden issue, Rachel Bosworth spoke with three North Fork garden center pros about what plants thrive in our location so that you can have that perfect summer garden. She also takes a look at some great accessories you can use to enhance your garden scenery. Also in this issue, be sure to check out Ruth Thomas’ latest Best Deals feature for some great real estate values here on the North Fork - just in time to enjoy for the upcoming summer season; Rachel Bosworth’s feature on the long anticipated sale of Claudio’s in Greenport, and what the new owners and chefs are planning for the Memorial Day weekend opening; and our monthly Sound Bytes feature, which takes a look at some of the North Fork and Shelter Island restaurants and businesses that will be opening their doors for the upcoming season this month. Don’t forget to visit our completely redesigned website at NorthForkRealEstateShowcase.com to view our digital magazine (with all of our past issues archived), the latest news about the North Fork real estate scene, home design, lifestyle and much more. SOUND BYTES BEGINNING TO BLOOM ON THE NORTH FORK

BY RACHEL BOSWORTH

S

lowly waking from its winter slumber, the North Fork comes alive again now that we are well into spring. With this also comes a wave of seasonal visitors looking for rest and relaxation, and a little fun in the calm before summer. Being a seasonal area, many restaurants and businesses break for the off season to reset and refocus, while others prepare to open for the first time. Monthly events, art show openings, and old favorites back for another season are just a few things to look forward to this month as doors open for spring. Here are our picks for May… ORENDA Inspired by feminine strength, the history of adornments, and the power of rituals, Orenda has opened its doors on Front Street in Greenport. The fine jewelry shop is run and curated by designer Susan Pridham of Blue Ruth and jeweler Alexa Suess of Common Ground Adornments. The duo each create their own unique pieces honoring globalism, humanism, and all things female, while also sourcing pieces that reflect these ideals from other women designers and creatives. The shop alone offers inspiration for those looking for a little harmony in their lives with wall hangings, crystals, wood carvings, leather bound journals, accessories, and more. It’ll be hard to walk in and walk out empty handed. Rest assured, there is a little something beautiful for everyone inside Orenda.

Spaghetti con Granchio at Barba Bianca

LOVE LANE FIRST FRIDAYS RETURN This month marks the return of Love Lane First Fridays which will run on the first Friday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. now through October. Walk the quaint little street as it closes and local businesses popup for summer and fall fun. Try bites and sips from local shops like Love Lane

Kitchen, Lombardi’s Love Lane Market, The Village Cheese Shop, Roanoke Vineyards, and more while listening to live music. It’s a great family event where the kids can get their faces painted and adults can shop goods from local artisans. Oh, and it’s free. Kick start your summer weekend on Love Lane. NORTH FORK ART SHOWS Local artists help define the culture of the North Fork. This month, be sure to check out these shows and take it all in. Fine artist Kelly Franké’s charcoal drawings will be on display at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery in Jamesport. To celebrate the arrival of sunnier times, “Here Comes the Sun” juried art show will be on view at the East End Arts Gallery in Riverhead. “White Paintings,” an exhibition of new works by Brooklyn and Long Islandbased artist Jacqueline Ferrante is on now view at VSOP Projects in Greenport. A group show of women artists, “Solely Women,” will have its opening reception this month at the William Ris Gallery in Jamesport. RESTAURANTS REOPENING We could not possibly wait any longer for these North Fork restaurants to reopen their doors for the summer. This month, regional Italian restaurant Barba Bianca will be back with chef Frank DeCarlo at the helm of this waterfront hotspot right on Preston’s Dock in Greenport. The Claudio’s empire will reopen Memorial Day weekend under new ownership, honoring the restaurant’s history and simultaneously looking toward the future. Salt on Shelter Island and its sister restaurant, Port in Greenport, will soon join in opening for the summer season as well. Bonus: all of these restaurants offer water views. All the more reason to love the month of May!

THE NORTH FORK GARDEN PLANTING TRENDS TO TRY THIS SEASON

S

pring has sprung and those with a green thumb have been eager to get their hands in the ground and dirty to revamp their outdoor living spaces. The summer season will be here before we know it, and now is the time to get plants, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and more into your gardens. Three North Fork garden centers and pros are sharing their tips on what thrives locally and what makes for a perfectly designed garden and landscape. With an appreciation of the earth and mission to operate as sustainably as possible, Garden of Eve Farm in Riverhead grows numerous varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers, all without harmful chemicals. It’s a practice owner and farmer Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, who owns the farm with her husband Chris, is passionate about as an environmental advocate. This translates into their organic products that they are able to offer customers for their own gardens. When starting

a garden, Kaplan-Walbrecht says there are some important things to consider. “The number one thing to think about is how you are going to water your garden,” KaplanWalbrecht says. “You want to be realistic about how much time you want to spend watering your garden. If you don’t want to stand there with a hose every day, you may want to invest in a drip watering system. You won’t get a lot of nice produce if you don’t water during the heat of summer.” The ground itself is equally important. Starting with good soil, something Kaplan-Walbrecht says most people are conscious about, is essential as you don’t want to plant everything into backyard dirt. Adding a lot of compost is helpful and leads to better success in a garden as it helps loosen and lighten things up, and fertilizing won’t be as necessary if you compost every year.

Peter Clarke of Clarke’s Garden and Home in Greenport agrees understanding the condition of the soil is important and says that investing in a soil test with Cornell Cooperative Extension is worth it. Explaining that heavy clay soils are rich in nutrients but retain water and may need to be amended to drain, while sandy, loose soils drain quickly and do not hold nutrients and may need compost, Clarke also says gardeners need to be realistic with how much work you will be likely to perform in the garden and plan well. “For some, container gardens may be a great way to add color and beauty to the areas immediately around the house, like the porches and patios,” Clarke says. “If you are unsure of your knowledge, invest in a professional or take a class. We offer full-service container garden design as well as herb and vegetable garden design and smaller scale landscape design.”

Deer resistant perennials are popular in North Fork gardens Gabrielsen says. It is an important category for those that live out east as deer are prevalent, and hungry, in the spring and summer months for the beautiful flowers that make our gardens standout. Gabrielsen suggests natural deer spray as well such as Deer Out to keep the deer from eating plants. Gabrielsen’s multi-generational farm also offers a variety of plants and flowers, and she shares that catmint, lavender, and blue salvia are North Fork favorites. “Succulents have become popular,” she explains. “Herb planters are a great way to have fresh herbs all winter because you can bring them in for the winter months. Succulents do well throughout the seasons as well as indoor plants such as Boston fern, peace lily, Purple Wandering Jew and ivy.” Of the vegetable variety, Kaplan-Walbrecht defers to the local summer favorite. “Cherry tomatoes have become really popular, very justifiably,” she explains. “We try to convert people to cherry tomatoes a lot of the time even if they’re looking for a beefsteak variety. They come in earlier and have better flavor than an even bigger tomato. Sungold is super sweet, Matt’s wild cherry is

really delicious, and chocolate cherry which is purple. It’s fun for kids to pick too. The plants are hardy and you get a lot of fruit. Bigger tomatoes need more time and a lot can happen by the time they’re ready for harvest.” The herbs and vegetables at Clarke’s Garden and Home are organic as well. “We believe that foods that we ingest should be free of the toxic load of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides that, sadly, permeate the national food chain,” Clarke says. “Many of our local growers have taken a lead to provide these options which are free from these noxious chemicals. We also provide organic potting soil for containers intended for edibles.”

Lavender is a North Fork favorite.

Clarke also says that butterfly weeds - Asclepias incarnata, tuberosa and purpurescens – are an important food source for the threatened Monarch butterfly, and he encourages people to add these plants to their gardens. “North Fork growers have been leaders in the native plant movement,” he says. “This focus on plants that are indigenous to the area provides a back bone in the garden that is relatively maintenance free. It also provides pollinators, like butterflies, moths and bees, with important food sources.” With these tips and tricks to prepare your gardens for warmer weather, here’s one last idea to create the perfect outdoor experience in your own backyard from interior design Norine Pennacchia of touchGOODS in Southold: “Adding outdoor furniture to a garden allows you to expand your living space! It will give you more reason to spend time outdoors, and outdoor furniture in jewel toned colors can help add bright pops to your garden.” Happy planting!

Kristina Gabrielsen of Gabrielsen’s Country Farm in Jamesport explains that a good mix of plants and flowers create a beautiful and unique outdoor space. “It is best to plant a mixed garden with shrubs and perennials that have varied bloom times as well as a border of annuals for a splash of color that lasts all season,” she says. “Also group plantings in odd numbers for an appealing look for your garden.”

Tora Matsuoka and Stephen Loffredo will manage Claudio’s under the new ownership

A NEW CHAPTER FOR CLAUDIO’S HONORING HISTORY AND LOOKING FORWARD

T

BY RACHEL BOSWORTH

he long-anticipated sale of the Claudio’s, Claudio’s Clam Bar, and Crabby Jerry’s left many wondering what’s next for the Greenport staple. Touted as the longest family owned and operated restaurant in the United States, the 148-year reign came to an end this year as the Claudio family passed the three waterfront restaurants onto new owners. With a deep appreciation for the small seaside village and what very well may be a pinnacle of local culture, the new proprietors aim to offer a fresh take on a historical brand. Perry Weitz, his son David Weitz, Ian Behar, and Ryan Sasson are bringing their three families together to continue the legacy of Claudio’s. As self-described Greenport loyalists, they are committed to maintaining the local experience they too have always enjoyed. To honor this legacy, the new owners are placing Tora Matsuoka, owner of Sen Restaurant in Sag Harbor, and restaurateur Stephen Loffredo at the helm.

With generations of the Claudio family burgeoning its history, the family business aspect is one that will be of great importance for the new owners. Respectively, each come from owning family businesses, as well as Matsuoka having a restaurant that has been in business for more than two decades. The crew has also spent copious amounts of time in Greenport and have long been fans of Claudio’s compound.

“The Claudio’s family built an incredible history of fun and friends – one of the main reasons why we love the brands so much,” the pair say. “We aren’t going to change any of that; we want to build on those foundations continuing to enhance the work environment for our incredible team and the overall guest experience for our loyal guests. When you have such a strong base to work with, it makes it all much easier.”

So, what will change? A restaurant’s formula for success is the complementation of elements, the most important of which is food and beverage. Matsuoka and Loffredo are adamant about honoring the history of the restaurants and their longtime staff, and share that the Clam Bar and Crabby Jerry’s menus will remain largely unchanged. Subtle adjustments will be made to emphasize local and seasonal flavors, with a menu that is fun and approachable.

“We are thrilled with this exciting evolution,” Claudio’s co-owners Kathy and Janice Claudio say. “The team of owners is committed to maintaining the values that have carried our family name for generations while also reinvigorating our legacy of success. For 148 years, Claudio’s has been synonymous with great food and an unforgettable dining experience. We are confident that these three families will take Claudio’s to the next level of customer experience with the same passion that has made our name a North Fork staple.”

“The lunch and dinner menus at Claudio’s Restaurant will have a cleaner, more direct approach,” explain Matsuoka and Loffredo, adding that they are happy to have the current chefs stay onboard. “The emphasis will be placed on simplicity, allowing for the natural flavors to shine. Ingredients will be sourced locally whenever possible. The lunch menu will see more entrée salads, creative sandwiches and seafood. The dinner menu will include an expanded steak selection.” Cocktail culture on the North Fork has grown over the years as local wine, beer, and spirits help define the region, while craft producers around the globe lend to themselves to the well-rounded beverage programs guests look for on menus. The Clam Bar will offer a slightly larger spirits selection, in addition to a new and bright, refreshing summer cocktail program. Wines by the glass will feature North Fork, West Coast, and Mediterranean selections, with Matsuoka and Loffredo saying the Wharf will continue its “great time” tradition. “The bar at Claudio’s Restaurant will expand, offering an extensive list of spirits including whiskeys, bourbons, rums, tequilas, and mezcals,” they say. “The wine by the glass program will continue at over 20 selections – but the wine list will grow, offering diners a balanced flavor profile and price point.” The Claudio’s compound is set to reopen by Memorial Day weekend.
