EAST END EATS
LET THE SEASON BEGIN! THESE NORTH FORK RESTAURANTS WILL BE OPEN SOON BY HANNAH SELINGER
W
Kicking off their third season on the North Fork on May 19th is Duryea’s Orient, Orient, offering diners a seafood-centric waterfront experience that is accessible either by land or by sea. In June, the restaurant will launch their Beach Club, which will feature waterfront tables on the beach. A 1966 Holiday Rambler trailer, stocked to the brim with a raw bar and snack menu — and offering wine, beer, and soft drinks — will cap off the experience. On weekends, a DJ will spin tunes for the ultimate outdoor beach vibe. The century-old Claudio’s Restaurant on Main opens on May 21st for the summer season. With its old world charm and seafood-

ith summer nearly here, the North Fork’s restaurants are gearing up for the season. That means that seasonal spots are planning their return for the year. Some of our favorite restaurants are about to re-open their doors for the 2022 season. And we’re just as excited as ever to visit these East End spots for some warm weather eats.
Duryea’s Orient
centric menu, Claudio’s remains a Greenport favorite, year after year. The North Fork oysters Claudio, featuring spinach, pancetta, and Parmesan, is always a must, but house specialties also include the whole Canadian steamed lobster (served with a baked potato and local steamed corn) and the Greenport Harbor porter-battered fish and chips with fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce. KonTiki brings the tiki vibe to the North Fork, with retro-themed drinks and snacks. Located within Greenport’s Gallery Hotel, the seasonal spot is gearing for a reopen. Diners can expect a fun menu full of Pacific-inspired items, like the short rib bao buns — braised short ribs with kimchi and scallions — and the coconut curry with kaffir lime, white rice, and Asian vegetables. Drinks are similarly themed: the coconut island is a frozen piña colada with fresh lime, while the signature shark attack marries a frozen margarita with passion fruit and spicy red pepper.

Greenport’s Sound View Hotel may be open all year long — as is its signature dining venue,
the Halyard — but Jack’s Shack, Shack, the casual beach dining venue at the hotel’s pool, is warm weather-only. But, come Memorial Day, you can enjoy everything from whipped ricotta on homemade focaccia to New England-style clam chowder with bacon by the hotel’s picture perfect pool, which just happens to abut the Sound. Incredibly fresh seafood is also on the rotating menu. Shrimp cocktail, ceviche, and more are available, depending on the day. Crabby Jerry’s, Jerry’s, on the water in Greenport, opens for the season on May 12th. The casual service restaurant offers everything from raw bar items (clams, oysters, and shrimp cocktail are all on the menu) to fish-centric sandwiches (the lobster roll, naturally, is a fan favorite, and it can be enjoyed either Claudio’s, Connecticut, or Cajun-style, served on a potato bun) to fry shack dishes, like popcorn shrimp, clam strips, and local fish and chips. The famous lobster bash — two pound-and-a-half lobsters, served with steamed clams, mussels, shrimp, corn, and coleslaw — is definitely worth the price of admission.

SPOTLIGHT
SUMMER WITH EINSTEIN BY ALICE PHILLIPS explain the relationship between gravity and electromagnetism. To date, this theory has never been proven. As for the rest of his days on the North Fork, Einstein loved to sail and to play the violin. He kept his 15-foot sailboat in Horseshoe Cove. The boat was called “Tineff” – which means worthless in Yiddish. Reportedly, Einstein was no sailor — local lore is rife with stories of Southold residents having to rescue Einstein after tipping over in his boat. Another fun fact: Einstein couldn’t swim.
Albert Einstein with David Rothman, Southold 1939
W
alking down the south side of Main Road in Southold brings you past Einstein Square, a pleasant seating area next to Southold General. There’s a statue and plaque commemorating Einstein as well as a large, painted mural of Einstein with local Southold business owner David Rothman on the neighboring building, the former site of Rothman’s Department Store. Einstein? In Southold? Well, yes. During the summers of 1938 and 1939, Einstein traveled to the North Fork to do what so many of us like to do in summertime: leave the hustle and bustle behind and enjoy the peace and quiet of the idyllic beaches and waters of the Peconic Bay. He rented a small beach house on Old Cove Road in Nassau Point (now known as West Cove Road) for himself, his sister Maja, his step-daughter Margot, his son Hans, and his secretary Helen Dukas. At least part of each day, Einstein worked out his theories and thoughts on a blackboard in the cottage’s tiny living room. At the time, Einstein was searching for the “unified field theory” — a single formula to
16
In 1939, Einstein befriended David Rothman, the owner of Rothman’s Department Store on Main Street in Southold. As the story goes, Einstein went into Rothman’s looking for “sundials” — it took a minute for Rothman to understand that his new customer, in thicklyaccented English, was asking for sandals. Einstein purchased the sandals — in a ladies’ size 11 for $1.35 — which became an integral part of his North Fork summer uniform of shorts held up with a piece of rope and a white sport shirt. While at the store that day, Einstein and Rothman spoke of their mutual love of classical music. Rothman shared that he and his friends meet weekly to play Mozart and Beethoven in string quartet; Einstein, a trained violinist, joined the group. Rothman arranged many musical evenings at his Southold home where Einstein and a few friends would play. During that summer, World War II was not yet on the American doorstep and life still seemed carefree. However, a group of physicists led by exiled Hungarians Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner and Edward Teller, were gravely concerned about German advances in splitting the atom. Alarmed that the Germans may develop an atomic weapon in advance of the Americans, the Hungarian scientists convinced Einstein to write a letter outlining these concerns to President Franklin Roosevelt. Einstein wrote
this famed letter to FDR on August 2, 1939, warning of new developments in nuclear physics which could lead to the development of powerful weapons and hinted that the Germans might be working on an atomic bomb. This letter, which Einstein would later regret writing, is widely credited as the underlying cause of the Manhattan Project, which was the U.S. government effort to build the first atomic weapon to be used in armed conflict. A copy of this letter can be viewed at the Southold Historical Society, as well as a letter Einstein sent to David Rothman claiming that 1939 was his “happiest summer ever,” and calling the local bay “the most beautiful sailing ground I ever experienced.” Einstein never again returned to summer on the North Fork — so Rothman sent him a new pair of “sundials” every year.

North Fork | East Marion. You remember the feeling. You’re on holiday on the coast of some Caribbean isle or on the cliff of a European town overlooking the Mediterranean. Each morning when your head leaves the pillow you know you are on vacation with broad expanses of water dotted with boats and vistas of other shores. Much closer to home, only 100 miles from Manhattan, you can recreate that feeling each and every day when you develop this very private, nearly 12 acre waterfront, meadow-like parcel composed of two 5.7 acres lots spanning 350’ along the North Fork’s Long Island Sound. With permits pending, a savvy buyer would save hundreds of thousands of dollars and months of waiting to begin construction of a significant

Like You’re on Vacation Everyday house, waterside pool, tennis court and even a guest house for those who would undoubtedly flock to help you enjoy your grand, new estate. The low, but stable bluff, provides easy access down a gentle pebbled path to the beach from where you’ll enjoy an abundance of aquatic activities while conversation and laughter will resound around the inevitable nighttime beach fires. The property affords ample opportunity to create your own vineyard, apple orchard or a field of wildflowers through which your driveway will meander right to your front door. Only a few miles from both the ferries of Greenport and Orient Point, this well positioned property provides easy access to everything that has made the North Fork the new sought after destination. At night, go into town for dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants overlooking Shelter Island or head to one of the many vineyards for a wine tasting. But on clear evenings, eat early as you might want to get back for some of the most beautiful sunsets anywhere, as the sun seems to disappear somewhere into the Sound leaving the horizon a purplish haze. MID-CENTURY IS BACK WITH A LUXURY BENT FURNITURE DESIGNER JOYBIRD BRINGS COLOR, CUSTOMIZATION, AND MODERNITY TO THE FIELD BY HANNAH SELINGER furniture that felt unique, with varying levels of customization.” The founding team, Walker says, “loved the vibrant colors that were so prominent during the mid-1900s,” and looked to lean into those colors “during a time where many online retailers were promoting more neutral options.” The brand’s success has dovetailed with other trends in furniture and home décor: a move away from white, gray, and black; a reliance upon statement pieces and customization; and a full-throated investment in color and texture.
O
ne trend in furnishing that has shown no sign of slowing down? The reinvention of mid-century modern design. And one brand, in particular, that has a finger on the pulse of this particularly hot trend is Joybird, a company that was established in 2014 by Alex Del Toro, Andres Hinostroza, Joshua Stellin, and Christopher Stormer. Customizable, comfortable, and — this is key — colorful furniture is ordered directly from Joybird via the company’s website. Color swatches (fabrics come in a veritable rainbow of colors and materials) can also be ordered in advance. Come for the consoles, stay for the sofas, which are available in well over 25 different styles, and countless configurations. “At the time, there were very few direct-to-consumer furniture brands,” says Gifty Walker, Director of Merchandising and Sourcing at Joybird. “The idea was to offer
22
The brand’s most popular design to date, Walker says, is the Soto apartment chair, which was inspired by the iconic 1960s-era Z chair. “Since Joybird started,” Walker says, “the Soto chair has been our number oneselling chair, and we see it both in homes that are exclusively mid-century modern and homes that have more of an updated, modern aesthetic.” The chair, Walker says, has a crossappeal that, notably, checks numerous boxes. “It’s just that chair that works no matter where it is.”
deliveries, limitless backorders — Joybird does seem to have their system down to a science. Despite the fact that pieces are often made-toorder, production is running smoothly, with couches shipping roughly two to three months after they have been ordered, a far cry from the five-, six-, and 12-month delays that some larger brands have experienced since the start of the pandemic. “Our agile manufacturing team really has been able to step up to the plate and deliver for our customers,” Walker says. “One big advantage is that we do our manufacturing in North America. With consistent rises in demand, we increased capacity at our factory, along with being able to retain our staff and train new team members.” With options galore and lightning-fast turnaround time, Joybird is modern luxury with a hint of the past. As Walker says, the brand is “bold, unique, and always willing to take chances.” The good news? Whatever your style, there’s a color and a fabric for that.
Although Joybird’s broad portfolio — which also includes lamps, rugs, bedframes, and dining sets — does follow the broad strokes of mid-century design, Walker says that the brand’s appeal is timeless. “The silhouettes offer clean lines with details that work well with other styles and can serve as an accent or conversation piece in a room setting,” Walker says. “Customers like the thought of owning something that will garner attention but also work throughout the years, as trends continue to evolve.” In a year of furniture mishaps — delayed

GARDEN BLUES COOL COLORS ARE CALMING AND RESTFUL
BY ANNE HALPIN
Hydrangeas – In summer blue hydrangeas are everywhere, echoing the color of the summer sky. Classic varieties need to be pruned, if needed, shortly after the plants finish blooming. Newer varieties will produce flowers no matter when you prune them. Scilla Siberica, Siberian Squills – These are small bulbs planted in fall. Among the earliest flowers to bloom in spring – along with crocuses – these little charmers burst forth with true blue flowers while most of the garden is still asleep. Plant lots of them. Deer don’t bother them. Bachelor’s Button – These old fashioned annual flowers are planted from seed in spring and bloom for a long time in summer, producing lots of ethereal blue flowers.
Heavenly Blue Morning Glory
B
lue is the most unusual color in the plant world, and one to be treasured. Blue flowers and foliage bring special qualities to the garden. Cool colors like blue, green, purple and violet are calming and restful. Blue appears to recede in space, and creates a feeling of serenity and peace. This color of the sea and the sky calms us and makes us feel cool. Planting blue and purple flowers in the back of a garden can make the garden appear larger and deeper than it actually is. A garden of blues and purples seems somehow cool, even in hot sun. Deep blues and purples bring a hint of mystery, too, like the sky at twilight or the depths of a still pool. Blue flowers, and blue and blue-gray foliage, can create the feeling of an island of tranquility, especially around a small pool or fountain, or in a seating area. Cool pink flowers are lovely with blues and purples in the garden, especially when accompanied by silvery foliage; when the colors are pastels the effect can be soft and misty. And flowers aren’t the only source of blues for the garden – it can come from foliage, too. There are hostas with blue-green and bluish silver leaves that can add form and volume to gardens where deer are excluded. Whether you are growing your 24
flowers in the garden or in pots and tubs on a deck or patio, you can combine colors in the way that suits your disposition, and/or that harmonizes or accents the color of your house. To create a garden built around blue, it’s helpful to plan your color scheme in advance of heading to the local nursery or garden center, or visiting an online catalog. There are many ways to include blue in your garden. If you’d like a harmonious feeling, combine blue flowers and/or foliage with shades of pink, from soft pastels to richer rosy tones. Add some purple. Mixing in some silver foliage will pull the colors together for a pleasant, quiet harmony. Blue and peach or salmon is another lovely combination; add a shot of yellow for a sunnier effect. For a color contrast, you can mix blue and yellow flowers, or blue and orange. For a more classic look, blue and white can create a formal, quiet feeling. To soften it, mix in some creamy ivory tones. Or go patriotic with red, white and blue flowers. Here are some terrific blue plants to consider adding to your landscape design this year.
Ceratostigma – Also known as plumbago or leadwort, these low-growing perennials are quiet front-of-the border plants most of the season, then burst forth with flowers of brilliant electric blue in late summer and fall. Johnson’s Blue Hardy Geranium – Not to be confused with the geraniums that are everywhere in summer pots, this is perennial relative sends out blue blossoms in spring and summer. A lovely addition to partly shady gardens. Heavenly Blue Morning Glory – One of my favorite plants in the world, this carefree vine needs a place to climb. Its summer flowers truly justify its name. They keep on coming until the weather gets too cool in fall. Salvia – Salvias come in a range of colors, but my favorite is the annual mealycup sage, Salvia farinacea. Like other salvias, its tiny flowers are gathered into vertical spikes. Many salvias are purple or violet, but this one is real blue. If you can find it, grow it! Hostas - If you can keep the deer out of your garden, you can enjoy hostas. Their foliage adds form and texture to the shade garden, and they bloom, too. Seek out the bluer varieties to add a cool note to your garden.

Succulent Summer Wreaths
A
BY JENN NEUBAUER
s we get ready for summer we also welcome a decor reset that accents all of the beautiful flowers and plants that have become available. This succulent wreath is an easy and inexpensive way to brighten up your space. You can source the materials from your local craft shop and the succulents from any local nursery. Here are some simple steps to create this beautiful wreath:
1
2
Jenn Neubauer can be found in her East End garden year round. She is a Garden Coach and documents her journey on her urban homestead with tips and education through her Instagram feed @hookandgarden.
STEP 1: Gather Your Materials Wooden Wreath | Moss (including sphagnum moss) Succulents | Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks Floral Wire or Greening Pins | Trimming Scissors
3
4
STEP 2: Begin by hot gluing the moss to the base of the wreath. This will create a foundation that the succulents can rest on top of. STEP 3: Cut your succulents where the stem meets the soil so you’re left with just the head of the succulent. Next, cut a piece of floral wire that is long enough that it can wrap around the wreath. Use the floral wire and wrap it around, winding it between the petals around the base of the succulent.
5
STEP 4: Lay out your succulents on the wreath before adhering them. Attach your succulent by wrapping the wire around the wreath and twisting the ends together at the back of the wreath . STEP 5: Repeat. I decided to only cover the base of the wreath with moss and succulents but you can continue around the entire wreath if you like. STEP 6: Mist the succulents once a week. Hope you have great success making your very own succulent wreath. For a step by step guide you can head over to my Instagram page @hookandgarden for a “how to” video. Enjoy!

LIGHT IT UP
MID-CENTURY DESIGNS ARE TRENDING IN THE LUXURY LIGHTING MARKET BY HANNAH SELINGER too. To that end, black is also back, with matte fixtures ushering in a sleeker, more streamlined look. Mixing different types of metals in a single light fixture (think chandeliers boasting different types and colors) is also en vogue, and it’s a good way to blend rooms that may feature transitional design features. Go Vertical Chandeliers are expanding into the vertical field, with a series of popular shapes that are capturing often ignored vertical space. Some of the most common examples of these trending fixtures are the omnipresent “sputnik” style fixtures that emerging lighting designers like Ellen DeGeneres (yes, that Ellen DeGeneres; the comedian and television star recently launched a top-notch lighting brand called ED Ellen DeGeneres) have latched onto. Basket style Chandelier
I
f you’re looking to update your lighting this year, you may want to have your finger on the pulse of the latest trends in design and décor. Here’s what’s out: large, flashy light fixtures made from cut crystal descending in tiers. Here’s what’s decidedly in: mid-century-inspired pieces constructed in brushed and polished brass. New designers have emerged, cornering a luxury market. And a series of minimalist shapes have captured designers and homeowners’ attention as they seek to reimagine familiar spaces. Here’s the rundown of what’s currently hot in lighting. Midcentury Metals Although cut crystal once spoke to luxury when it came to light fixtures, today’s hotter trends are metals in all shapes and colors. Brass — both polished and brushed — has ruled the roost for several years now, but antiqued brass is making a comeback,
28
Hardwire It Nothing says luxury quite like a hardwired sconce, and sconces are definitely back. Sconces add romantic bedside lighting, sophisticated bathroom lighting, and a wholesale finished look to pretty much every room in the house. These clutter-reducing light fixtures quickly boost beauty, and they’re very much on trend right now. Milk
glass, wicker, round, and sculptural sconces are particularly zeitgeisty in home design. Flush Mounts Take risks with statement-making flush mounts that make the ceiling a centerpiece of your home. Basket-woven flush mount light fixtures allow for light to pour through, providing a visual point of interest where you least expect it. Organic materials — wood, shells, found materials, recycled glass — are making their way into all types of light fixtures, including flush mounts, for a focus on a look that’s more rooted in nature. So where can you find these of-the-moment styles when it comes to light fixtures? Here on the North Fork there are myriad options. Consider a few: In Riverhead and Southold, Revco Lighting offers a beachy take on luxury design, leaning into organic material and brass-toned light fixtures (a natural complement to the North Fork’s wateradjacent homes). Both locations provide bespoke lighting for a cosmopolitan crowd. Antique shops can also be a great starting point if you’re interested in revisiting past trends that are enjoying a revival. Brass fixtures with patina can easily be restored to like-new condition.
