— with an early summer opening planned. Founder Andrea Tese’s goal is to operate a fully sustainable and ecologically low-impact restaurant; to this end, rumour has it that the décor will include found and reclaimed items from in and around the North Fork — from wood paneling to mismatched silverware. To-go containers will be glass and returnable to the restaurant after use. Chef Cheo Avila is creating a locally sourced menu which will highlight fish native to the East End and not caught in traps or nets, which are environmentally unsound.

Here comes summer, 2023. The North Fork’s seasonal restaurants are back for the year, and some of our favorite spots are planning their grand return. We’re excited to make it back to some of our tried-and-true favorites for the warm weather eats of the season. Read on for what’s new this month on the North Fork.
The fourth season of Duryea’s Orient Point opens this year on May 18th, welcoming guests back to the sand and sea either by boat or by car. Expect classics from this always-lovely and iconic establishment: classic seafood towers, some of the best views in all of the North Fork, and feet-in-the-sand enjoyment with fresh seafood and even fresher vibes. Say yes to rosé and yes to all that summer has to offer from May through the end of summer at this de rigueur warm weather experience.
The century-old Claudio’s Restaurant on Main opens in May for the summer season. Old world charm meets a classic menu at this more
formal style restaurant, which sits right in the heart of downtown Greenport (those who prefer to sit outside can enjoy the restaurant’s back patio, which faces the marina). Fish and chips, whole steamed lobster, and North Fork oysters are all menu staples that will be back this spring and summer.
SELINGERGeorge Giannaris began working at the Snack Bar when he was only 10-years-old and has continued there ever since. Classics like the Hellenic’s salad (the same since 1976) are on the menu: iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, onions, Kalamata olives, feta, anchovies, and John’s original dressing. Shrimp saganaki, pork and lamb souvlaki, and a host of delightful burgers are also worth stopping in for. For dessert, don’t miss the walnut- and almondrich baklava, or the epic galaktoboureko, filo dough stuffed with a warm custard filling and amplified with cinnamon syrup.
After a winter hiatus, Southold Social by Francois Payard is back. The bistro-style restaurant, which focuses on local produce, fresh-caught fish, and the chef’s signature, house-made pasta, reopened on April 7th for the season. A regularly changing spring, summer, and fall menu will feature items like black squid ink linguine with lobster bisque, shrimp, and parsley; local Little Ram oysters with a mignonette and Holy Schmitt’s horseradish; and a bi-color beet tartare with Sabatino truffles, goat cheese, and a balsamic reduction.
The Hellenic Snack Bar, in Greenport, reopened in February and is ready for visitors this spring and summer. Chef and owner
Get out (well, practically) on the water at Crabby Jerry’s, in Greenport, which offers both casual dining and music events through spring and summer. The music season launches on May 19th with Sahara, and continues on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through the end of the season. Fish is the name of the game at Crabby Jerry’s. Try the lobster roll, either Claudio’s-, Connecticut-, or Cajun-style, on a potato bun. The fry shack serves up delicious fried seafood, like clam strips and fish and chips. And the lobster quesadilla, served with sour cream and pico de gallo, is an excellent way to honor this much-beloved crustacean.

Dahlias are excellent additions to East End flower gardens, in the ground or in containers. The plants bloom nonstop all summer until frost shuts them down; they reach their peak in many gardens in August and September. There’s a range of warm colors available from pastels to brights: shades of red, rose, pink, yellow, orange, and white, and a variety of flower forms — from full, round pompoms to single and daisylike to slender petaled and spidery. The flowers come in many sizes, too, although the big dinner-plate types are hard to mix with other plants in the garden. Plants range in size from foot-high dwarfs to 3- and 4-footers. Use dwarf dahlias in the front of the garden beds and borders or in pots. Taller varieties can go into the middle ground of a sunny bed or border, or you can combine them with other annuals in large containers. Dahlias combine well with daisylike flowers such as coreopsis, spiky blossoms like salvia and veronica, smallflowered baby’s breath, and many other flowers.
Dahlias are not true annuals; they grow from tuberous roots that are tender. But you can dig them up in fall and store them indoors over winter to replant in spring. The plants grow best in soil that’s fertile and moist but well drained. Amend the soil with compost in fall for planting the following spring. Good drainage is important; dahlias will rot in soggy soil.
Local nurseries and garden centers sell blooming-size dahlias for summer planting. If you decide to save the tubers to plant again next year, store them in a cool place and plant them outdoors when the danger of a late heavy frost is past. Plants from a nursery or garden center should be planted at the same depth they were growing in their container.
Dahlias are heavy feeders in the garden, so feed them every couple of weeks with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer. Water the plants during dry weather. Plants growing in containers may need daily watering during
hot weather, depending on the size of the pot. Tall varieties may need staking. Clip off faded flowers to keep the plants blooming freely. And enjoy those beautiful colors all summer and into the fall!
Down a graceful country road, on the North Fork of Long Island your dream home awaits. Sprawling over 13 acres with 354 feet of waterfront on Arshamomaque Pond leading out to the Peconic Bay. My husband and I have been redesigning our outdoor space, with the help of Yardzen, an online platform that essentially works as a stand-in for a landscape architect. I wanted to know a little bit more about the year’s trends and attitudes toward outdoor furniture, in particular, as I planned my own great outdoor escape. “Homeowners are investing in outdoor projects that increase their enjoyment at home,” says Kendra Poppy, Trends Expert and Head of Brand at Yardzen. “With high interest rates, many homeowners are delaying an imminent move and investing in creating landscaping that makes them feel happy, whole, and connected.”
Yardzen, which recently released its 2023 annual trend report, has recognized a tack toward “unfussy” styles, as well as sustainable design solutions that blend in with the native surroundings. That means hard lines, symmetry, organic shapes, and textures, the report concludes. It also means long dining tables for shared meals, an emphasis on outdoor living rooms, and an increase in plunge pools. When it comes to actual furniture, homeowners are leaning toward wellness-related pieces, like pergola daybeds, yoga platforms, and pieces that do double duty, creating a spa-like oasis (or a makeshift gym) outside.
Major furniture retailers, like Pottery Barn, have introduced bespoke pieces (the Madera Teak Daybed, which retails for $7,499, offers a space inside for suspended interior lighting, a built-in table for drinks, and cushions and curtains that can be customized with Sunbrella fabric). And the brand is even making waves with its Shelter Co. Canvas Tent ($1,299), a cotton and polyester tent that can function as a semi-permanent outdoor structure. It’s a neutral enough addition to the yard to blend in with the landscaping and can also function as a shady pool house for guests; it’s large enough to house a queen-sized bed, couch, and even features four screened windows.
France & Son’s sleek-lined teak outdoor furniture blends in seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The Zen Teak Platform Bed ($3,600) comes with single-color cushions and a long, luxurious footprint for lounging. Those who prefer to sit in the shade can also choose from the company’s line of sun loungers, including the top-of-the-line Savannah Twin Outdoor Sun Lounger Set with Canopy
($8,999), which comes with its own table for cocktailing.
Since the plunge pool is of-the-moment in 2023, so is pool-friendly seating. At Rove Concepts, sustainable chairs — small enough to fit around even a petite pool — are the name of the game. The Jericho Sling Chairs ($427), available in both black and gray fabrics, are perfect for any color scheme. The chair frames are a neutral wicker and can easily fold for compact off-season storage. For a larger footprint, consider the brand’s Francis Outdoor Lounger ($1,213), a streamlined lounge chair with space on the side for a drink.
And homeowners should think big — for their tables, that is. Yardzen found that 68 percent of homeowners were increasing their outdoor dining tables to accommodate over eight people. For that task, only the Crate & Barrel Alfresco 103” table ($1,399) will do. Bon Appétit.
