VICKI WEEKS & WHIZKY ON THE ROCKS

When and where did you first see your roan, how did you end up with him as yours, and how long have you owned her?

I had been looking for a new horse for about a year. I had just gone through some tough times with multiple surgeries on my feet. I had not shown in about 7 years. Wanted to get back into showing. I was looking for a bay overo paint as that was my dream horse. Roans were not even my favorite color for a horse. I also wasn’t looking for a young horse. Being older (in my 60s) and having a hereditary condition called CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth) which causes muscle weakness and causes tendons to contract. So I wanted something that was a been there done that kind of horse. I have always rode horses which helps my legs stay as strong as possible. I saw this video of Whizky on Facebook. Liked how he moved. Wasn’t sure of his age though being not quite three. Also he was a roan and not a bay overo paint. Something though kept nagging me to go try him out. So I wrangled up my two girls to go with me. On our way there I kept seeing signs that would have the words Whiskey on them. I joked to the girls it must be a sign that I was doing the right thing to go see him. I struggled to get on Whizky only because of having almost a year of not being able to ride because of my recent surgeries. I was tentative about riding him. He wasn’t quite 3 years old yet. Was I surprised, we trotted off at a beautiful smooth trot. He was so

quiet. I heard my girls say don’t lope mom just get him lol. I asked the lady that owned him what were his cues to lope. They were similar to what I did with my horses in the past. He went right into it. Just a nice slow lope not fighting him to get into the right gait or to keep him slow, he was just smooth as silk. I fell in love.

This all happened just before the pandemic. I was so glad I had him to ride during the shut down. He is such a cool horse. Even as young as he is, he is one of the best horses I have owned. Every time I get on him he just starts off the same no matter how much time is between the rides.

I have owned him for 2 years. Where, what level, and in what classes do you show your roan?

I have shown horses for years, but have been out of showing for about 7 years before getting my roan. Currently we show only the western classes. Pleasure and horsemanship. Some halter and trail classes. We may try some english this year. What is your favorite thing to do with your roan horse? Showing and also trail. What is your favorite memory with your roan horse? Winning my first walk, trot, lope western pleasure and horsemanship class

What are your thoughts about the American Roan Horse Association?

I love knowing that I have the option to show in a different breed Association besides quarter horse.
