The ins and outs of Fitted Showmanship Suits
With Kevin Garcia

In Showmanship there are two distinct styles of people, the suits vs the sparkle. Both are equally acceptable looks in the arena but yet completely different. Not unlike a cocktail party where some women will be most comfortable dressed in an impeccably fitted little black dress and others will choose a bold color or heavily embellished look. Style is as individual and those wearing the look. Showmanship is a class that requires great attention to every aspect of your presentation. From your horse’s appearance and performance to your own look, the details matter. Style must also mix with performance as you need to look impeccable standing still, but also running a half marathon in deep arena sand.

We have often featured what goes into the embellished sparkle heavy designs, but we wanted to take a closer look at the Showmanship suits that are so desirable and how they are made. We connected with Kevin Garcia of Kevin Garcia Originals to learn all about the process of designing and fitting his impeccably tailored suits.
Do you feel there is a body type or age that suits the suit look?
“We sell suits to all ages and body types from youth to plus sizes. We also sell both ladies’ and men’s suits. Because the suits button under the bust line and hits at the natural waist they are very flattering for an hourglass figure, but with custom fitting they look outstanding on all body types.”
I think we all know in showmanship fit is critical. How do you get your signature perfect fit?
“Measurements are key to a quality fit. You need to be measured by a qualified professional to ensure the fit. Some of our clients even fly in to me to measure them to be sure they will get the perfect

fit.” Kevin offers a measurement diagram on his website that shows your local tailor exactly the type of measurements needed to get your perfect custom fit.
Do you have any advice for exhibitors trying to decide between sparkle or the clean suit look?
“You should wear what you are most comfortable with and what suits your personality. In my opinion you can never go wrong with a simple clean design.”
How do you help your clients stand out when they choose to go with the fitted suit route?
“Pairing your perfectly tailored showmanship suit with a hat and shirt in contrasting color can really make your look pop. We do some stunning embellished lapels as well for those that want a little bit of sparkle or a pop of
Are people limited to plain suits or do you have fabric options beyond the typical solids and stripes?

“We create suits in a wide range of fabrics, right now bold colors, plaids and patterned materials are really popular.” Kevin has recently completed suits ranging from a bold burgundy plaid to stunning solid charcoal with Swarovski embellishment on the lapel and buttons.
What type of material do you use for your suits? Do you use something with stretch for movement or just perfectly fit your suits?
“Traditional embellished showmanship outfits are made with a stretch base but our fitted suits are made with traditional high end Italian suiting fabrics. These do not have stretch and that is why proper measurements are crucial.” Kevin explains that a well-constructed and well fitted suit will not need stretch to be comfortable and flattering in the showmanship pen.
Do you have a favorite look you have designed? Can you describe it?
“I find simple geometrical designs very eye catching for showmanship whether it is the pattern of a
plaid in a suit or the lines of crystals in a heavily embellished showmanship jacket. I try to design an elegant look that places the emphasis of the exhibitor’s personality.”
Do you have any advice for people looking for their next showmanship style?
“Look at your personal style outside of the show ring, what looks are you most comfortable in.” Do you prefer that little black dress that is perfectly fitted or something colorful or that sparkles? When you know your style, it is easy to build from there. Kevin suggests you “think about your personal style and what is most flattering for your body type.”
You can also spend some time looking online at photos and in person at shows to see which looks appeal to you and what looks great on people with your body type and with your horse’s color. You can take elements from the outfits you love to inspire your next look.
