By Donna Nabors Organized on April 21, 1929, the original Rock Creek Riding Club didn’t hold its first horse show until 1933 and the participants were restricted to members only. Four years later it was a two day event and open to the general public .C. J. Cronan, Jr., Helen and Charles Crabtree, Harold Morgeson, Herman Miles, Cornelia Serpell and K. K. Gutridge are just some of the names that have ties to the early days of the facility. Now, the five day event has a large number of entries from all over the country, but the old-time ambience is still there. This statement doesn’t refer to the potato fields that once surrounded the show grounds, but rather the stately old trees, the colorful tents, concession stands, vendor tents and charming clubhouse that pre-dates to the Civil War. With the proliferation of horse shows every weekend in some town or city, Rock Creek has had to share those horses that can and do eventually go on to make their mark in Saddlebred history. At one time, Rock Creek was one of the places a competitor had to go to make a name for their horse. But even with the share and share alike philosophy prevalent today, a win a Rock Creek still deserves respect and admiration from anybody familiar with the high caliber competition that shows up outside of Louisville every June. Trainers are starting to fine tune their mounts for the shows leading up to the World Championships, and everyone is aware that Rock Creek is still the perfect place to acquire experience needed to make a good impression in the upcoming shows. The 2012 Rock Creek Horse Show defied tradition in that the weather cooperated every day of the show. Over the years, the rain seemed to be a regular visitor to the show grounds, but this year it was dry and temperatures were very pleasant the whole week. Golden Creek Farm led the way of owners who had something to cheer about. Eleven times their horses or ponies paraded through the entrance gate and came back with either a first, second, third or fourth place ribbon. Carl Fischer got to add 10 more ribbons of various colors to his collection, thanks to Peter Palmer. Shelby Farm & Stable, LLC collected eight ribbons for their efforts, as did Hillcroft Farm. Susan Olcott garnered seven ribbons during the show, and Carol Hillenbrand and Terri Dolan both had six ribbons to show off. Five ribbons each were awarded to Amy Dix Rock, Fox Grape Farm, Elisabeth Goth, Sondra Kipper, Payton walker, LLC, Kay Marschel and Sandra Surber. Whether a competitor left the ring with a ribbon or not, everyone would have to agree that this year’s Rock Creek Horse Show was one for the record books, if for no other reason than for the special memories each left with.

Show horSe ASSociAtionS ASking for trAinerS/exhibitorS Attention Lexington, Kentucky - The United Professional Horsemen’s Association (UPHA) hopes that everyone is enjoying a great start to the 2012 show season. Please note that there is a possibility that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be attending and observing at several of the American Saddlebred, Morgan and Hackney Pony horse shows across the country. As you meet and greet these Federal employees please be kind and courteous and represent our breeds with the class they deserve. The UPHA, along with officials from the American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA), the American Hackney Horse Society (AHHS), and the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA), are reminding all horsemen of the importance to fully understand the rules and regulations contained in the Horse Protection Act (HPA). The HPA applies to all horsemen at all times. The rules and regulations contained in this Federal Law can be found here. With the recent heightened sensitivity regarding equine welfare, we need to remind the outside world how much effort and care goes into the welfare of our horses and exhibit those same actions at all times. As always, the UPHA prides itself in keeping its membership fully informed and up to date on the daily happenings within the equine industry. Please remember the foundation slogan of the organization is “Horsemen Helping Horsemen,” so let’s all work together to help each other not only abide by the rules set forth in the Horse Protection Act, but also keep the general public’s perception at the forefront at all times. Best of luck this show season!

uSef high SchooL equeStriAn AthLete ProgrAm Lexington, Kentucky - Letterman jackets and varsity letters have long been a tradition of the American high school experience. Whether it’s from track and field or basketball, earning your letter and wearing it proudly is a rite of passage but until recently, equestrian student athletes were left out of these acknowledged ranks. Today’s equestrians have more opportunities than ever before to compete on interscholastic equestrian teams, and now, thanks to the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) increasingly popular High School Equestrian Athlete program, teens interested in earning their letter in equestrian have got it made. 12 & Under W/T Pleasure Champions Madison Alley and Irish Hill’s Mountain Star DUBLIN, VA- The New River Valley Horse Show took place at the New River Valley Fairgrounds in Dublin, VA on May 24-26. Memorial weekend is always a special weekend to spend with friends and family to celebrate our freedom and to thank those who serve, or have served, for all they do. We would not be where we are today without them. Everyone got a kick out of a visit from the Goodyear Blimp at the Airport next door. The NRV Horse Show featured multi-breed classes to suit everyone. Saddlebreds, hackneys, racking, western and hunt seat were featured. The classes were filled with some fierce competition and Paul Boone, from Concord, NC, had some very tough decisions to make. Saturday evening featured the Retirement Ceremony for Not A Moment Too Soon. Melanie Carroll rode and unsaddled “Bubba” in the ring for a final time. For 22 he still had some moves. The entire weekend was filled with exciting and competitive classes. Looking forward to an even better show next year.

Introducing Walden Bullard By Donna Nabors As with everything that goes on in life, one generation follows another. Over the years, the older generation is replaced by the younger, and the decades move on. Everything from businesses and industries to governments and sports, success so often depends on the younger generation learning everything they can from the ones before them. This same philosophy applies to the Saddlebred world. Trainers with the name of Robertson, Moore, Bass, Simmons, Lee, Harris, Teater, Shifflet, just to mention a few, were wellknown and respected in their time. They’ve been replaced by their sons or daughters or assistant trainers, and those same people are grooming the next generation of Saddlebred trainers. Once they feel they have learned as much as they can, the “trainers-in-waiting” strike out on their own, trusting that the knowledge and experience they’ve garnered from their mentors will merit the trust of future clients who will put their dreams of a future world champion in their ready and capable hands. Such is the scenario with Walden Bullard. Growing up as a boy in North Carolina, Walt didn’t have any specific direction in his life, but he knew he loved horses from the time he could walk and talk. The native Lumbee Indian started his equine experiences with a Morgan gelding named Buck. He went to a racking horse show (sandlappers are they are fondly referred to in that area) and eventually landed a job at a Walking horse barn during his high school years. But his life was destined to change when he saw Elisabeth Goth riding Hollywood Excellence at the Walking Horse Celebration. Nothing would do except to pursue his new-found love with American Saddlebreds. He honed his experiences with a few different barns, talking a wealth of knowledge with him each time. After landing a job with George Knight in Lexington, Kentucky, Walt spent 10 years surrounded by numerous champion and high caliber horses, from That Kind of Woman, HS Daydreams’ Celebrity and HS Dignitary to If The Tiara Fits, Rachel Zoe and Along Came A Spider, just to name a few. Walt doesn’t hesitate to proclaim Spider as his favorite horse of all time. As with all new adventures, Walt anticipated both excitement and interpretation by going out on his own. The latter didn’t last long. The former is still going strong. Today he trains a small number of horses, a conscious choice on his part. He prefers to give each horse his individual attention, no matter how long that takes, each day. Not one to hurry a horse along, Walt’s days start early and end late, but he’s enjoying every minute of every hour. Nestled along a tree lined lane near Versailles, Kentucky, the 18 stall barn is an ample size, and very well kept. Not lamenting the fact there is no formal riding ring on the 18 acre property, he uses the picturesque grounds around the house he owns not far from the barn to exercise his students. No way a horse is going to get “ring sour” working out at Birchwood Farm. Walt has a preference for the younger horses that he can shape and mold the way he thinks best. Only when he is 100% sure that he’ll be presenting his horses to the best of their ability will he venture into the public eye. Walden Bullard has the desire to make something of himself. He has the talent to make something of the horses he trains. The next generation of Saddlebred trainers is here, and Walden Bullard will have his name listed along with all the other up-and-coming young men and women who are devoting their lives to the success of the American Saddlebred. Russell Springs Show
Roberto Binoasenor, Bing Crosby, and Greg Reason with SHOWTIME SADDLEBREDS By: Donna Nabors The Russell Springs Jaycees deserve a big “Atta-boy” for their efforts to make their 2012 Fair and Horse Show a successful event. Picture perfect weather helped to bring out large crowds to enjoy the rides, food, games, entertainment and shows. While there were a variety of horse breeds participating in Saturday night’s show, the Saddlebreds seemed to be the standouts. Thirty-two classes were scheduled, with 9 dedicated to Saddlebreds; the rest of the night’s competitions were minis and gaited horses. Although not exactly on the beaten path for the majority of Saddlebred barns, there was still a respectable number of trainers bringing nice horses to compete. Chris Reiser Stables, Showtime Saddlebreds, Kentucky Creek Saddlebreds, HOPE Stables and Iron Horseshoe Farm were just a few of the training facilities that had representatives in the pleasure, driving, three gaited or five gaited classes. Even in the open breed classes, the Saddlebreds showed everyone how a blue ribbon gets won.

The Best Little Horse Show in Texas By Kelley Reason Irving, TX-Let me tell you about the Best Little Horse Show in Texas that took place on May 3 through May 6, 2012 in Irving, Texas. It’s about everything that’s good in the Lone Star State. It’s about fun. It’s about the big hearts of a group of equestrian enthusiasts who use their passion for horses to assist those of their community in need. For the last 41 years, the Big D Charity Horse Show has been able to raise over $415,000.00 for Metroplex charities. Each year several hundred horsemen make their way from East to West to support Big D in its effort to reach out to others and this year was no different. Spectators, exhibitors, and sponsors witnessed the excitement of American Saddlebreds, Racking Horses, and Tennessee Walking Horses competing for trophies and prizes. They enjoyed great food, fun parties, and entertainment at the Las Colinas Equestrian Center. All this was teamed with exciting competition and set the stage for the best little horse show in Texas to maintain its claim to fame.

The 29th Annual Asheville Lion’s Club Benefit Horse Show 2012
By Dana Wise Although we all hope for ribbons and other prizes, first places and reserves when we head to our shows, I was reminded this weekend of our “true” prize, the love, respect, and loyalty of our faithful steeds. “Retire to your left” is one of my favorite times to photograph horse and rider. It is when the athletes get a moment’s rest before the placing is called. It is also when you see the hard work, up close, winner or not, in each horse and rider, but more importantly where you see the quiet bond between the pair. I watch riders pat their mounts, telling them subtly – good job – a silent appreciation of their partner. I see horses and riders exhale simultaneously, as if they were breathing as one, and a calmness come over both, although anxiety is at its peak. When the placing is called, I watch the exhibitor’s faces, and rarely do I see a frown or disappointed look on any rider. This past weekend at the Lion’s Club Benefit show was no exception to the positive horsemanship displayed at every show. The Lion’s Club Benefit Show was held at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher, NC on May 16-19, 2012. This show is one of the most well attended shows in the Carolinas. The competition is high, with many competitors at all levels of riding. Once again, teams came from all over the US, ready to give there all, and show off their talents as riders, and the skill and beauty of their horses. Through all of the nervousness and excitement last weekend, I listened to trainers on the sidelines instruct and praise their riders and horses. One trainer, whose horse did not place, said to another trainer, that the horse looked the best it has ever looked, and the rider did great! It is this positive feeling, and respect and love for the “show” that bring people back. Where no matter where you place, you still leave with the greatest prize of all, your horse! Page 44

Midwest Contenders Battle It Out SPRINGFIELD, IL - The 71st Annual Midwest Charity Horse Show welcomed some of the nation’s top competitors on June 13-16 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois. Soaring temperatures and humidity did not dampen the enthusiasm for this event, which is accepted as one of the premier showplaces for Saddlebreds. Classes were filled with show stars that will undoubtedly have ribbons on their bridles at the Kentucky State Fair. The show committee again rolled out the red carpet of hospitality with a delicious meal served each evening in the hospitality room. The ever popular “best of show”, was awarded to the horse or pony that made the biggest impression on the judges, trainers, and spectators. The Best Again Battled It Out At Midwest
The History of the Midwest Charity
Four years after the cavalry’s Amateur Show, The Midwest Horse Show was organized. The show became an annual event through 1941. When World War II broke out, the U.S. Army Air Corps took over the state fairgrounds and the shows were suspended for the duration. In 1946, the show returned and in the late 1940s and early 1950s, new ideas were added to the pageantry surrounding the “Midwest.” A kickoff parade through downtown Springfield became an annual even. A queen contest was held in area high schools, resulting in a coronation ceremony and fashion show held, prior to the show’s opening, at the old Abraham Lincoln Hotel. The selected queen received a scholarship award from Springfield Marine Bank. During this period, citizens’ committees of businessmen and women selected which service organizations were to be the recipients of the proceeds of each annual event. In 1958, the Midwest Horse Show was chartered as a non-profit corporation, with a 15-member board of directors. The name was officially changed to “The Midwest Charity Horse Show.” At that time, the board decided to choose one organization each year to be the recipient of the profits made on the shows and to act as a sponsor of the show. Over the years, The Boys Club, Ansar Shrine, Chamberlain Park, Th% Service Club, and Cerebral Palsy have all received the benefits of the show. As the direction of the Midwest Charity Horse Show changed, the association and St. John’s Hospital Guild teamed up for a successful partnership that raised over $60,000 for St. John’s Hospital in the late 1970s. At the end of the 1990s, the show born in the 1930s with a mixture of a few cavalry and civilian horses now attracts approximately 700 performing horses from around North America. Breeds participating include American Saddlebreds, Hackney-Harness Ponies, Roaster Horses, Morgans and Arabians. The show has been named Best in Illinois by the United Professional Horsemen’s Association and Best in the Country by the American Saddlebred Horse Breeder’s Association. The original enthusiasm of the people involved in those early years still lives, in many third-and fourth-generation families of exhibitors and sponsors. The exhibitors and their beautiful show horses provide five days of continuous family entertainment to residents of Springfield and surrounding communities. In addition to the entertainment value of this event, those participating in the Midwest Charity Horse Show offer a substantial economic boost to the Springfield area: during the show the exhibitors spend over $1.3 million on goods, services and accommodations. Studies conducted by the State of Illinois indicate that every dollar spent in the community generates an additional dollar, bringing the total economic impact to $2.6 million annually. Since 1989, the Midwest Charity Horse Show Association has had as its co-sponsor, the Southern Illinois University, School of Medicine Foundation. An endowment fund has been established by Midwest Charity Horse Show Association, and all proceeds from the Midwest Charity Horse Show are donated to the COCO Children’s Cancer Fund, a project of the SIU School of Medicine whose primary project is Camp COCO, a one-week summer camp for children with cancer and blood diseases and their siblings. We honor those who have supported the Midwest Charity Horse Show, and express our appreciation to our co-sponsor and all those who have contributed.

The Burlington
Spring Horse Show By Donna Nabors
The 2012 Burlington Horse Show is always a good place to take that inexperienced horse in the show barn. The classes are not overflowing, but the competition is such that winning a blue ribbon there is not always a guarantee for the seasoned entries. While there are numerous shows going on practically every weekend starting in May, this show just outside Cincinnati, Ohio brings competitors from a wide area. Sometimes it looks like “old home week”, as it may have been the previous Burlington show in the fall that people saw each other last. Without the festival atmosphere that accompanies the Burlington Fair and Horse Show later in the season, the focus stays on the ever-improving horses and their riders, keeping in mind the big payoff that waits for those worthy enough to make the trip to the Kentucky State Fair and World Championships less than three months away. The Friday and Saturday night classes were numerous and showed a wide variety of talents, both with the Saddlebreds and Arabians. Announcer Ron Burcham is always informing the crowd of the type of class and qualifications of the entries, which always seems to be well received by the spectators who aren’t familiar with saddleseat riding or driving requirements. While the evening classes were geared mainly toward the adults, both amateur and professional, Saturday’s daytime classes were all about the youngsters and adults working their way up the ranks in the competitions. Louisville Equestrian Center, Besty Webb Stables, Little Britian and Sandy Run stables all brought their students to duke it out with the likes of Zubrod, Spring Hill and Showtime stables. All in the name of good fun and friendly competition, nearly everyone had a ribbon by the end of the day. It’s no doubt that many of these neophytes will be making their victory pass aboard their own pride and joy in a future show.
Lilly Justice, Claire Giffis, Isabelle Fuchs, and Katie Maxwell are definately enjoying themselves at the show.

News
The USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program began in the fall of 2009 and was born out of a growing number of high school students wanting their sport of choice - equestrian - to get the same recognition as all the other traditionally recognized sports. “What initiated the program,” says Jennifer Mellenkamp, Director of National Breed/Discipline Affiliates and Youth Programs at the USEF, “was simply supply and demand. We were receiving phone calls from parents saying, ‘Is there anything offered that would recognize high school equestrian athletes? They spend just as much time training or competing as football and basketball players,’” recalls Mellenkamp.
The program quickly found its stride, and the response has been overwhelming. “Right now we have nearly 5,000 students enrolled.” says Mellenkamp. “Parents have told us the school systems don’t understand the training and dedication that is involved to be an equestrian athlete” adds Mellenkamp, “and there is often no recognition for these athletes within their school systems. We felt we needed to start something to give all equestrian athletes the acknowledgment they deserve.”
Skylar Rowan of Knoxville, Tennessee was another student enrolled in the program. When asked what the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program meant to her, Rowan responded, “What the (program) has given to me is validation and recognition from those who truly understand this amazing sport. By earning my varsity letter every year, I can also say to the world that I am an athlete... not just the girl who leaves school every day to ‘ride horses.’ Riding is my life, my passion and my sport. Yes, it would be great if my school was able to recognize me in the way that they do the other student athletes. But because of the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program, I now feel every bit as empowered as those that parade across the stage each May to pick up a letter.” For more information about the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program, please visitwww.usef.org/highschool or email highschoolequestrianathlete@usef.org. Please send in application forms to the American Saddlebred Horse Association’s Brenda Newell at 4083 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY, 40511. She can be reached by email at b.newell@asha.net or by phone at (859) 475-1461.
The USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program was created as a means for students to receive recognition for their individual achievements regardless of if their school recognizes equestrian as a sport. Students are responsible for tracking their own hours and competitions which means support from the student’s school is not necessary to participate. Individuals who do compete interscholastically are able to use their team practice hours and competitions towards meeting the annual requirements. The program does provide schools with updates and information about the students. “We’re hoping this will initiate conversations with the schools,” says Mellenkamp, “and that they will start taking notice of the equestrians that are enrolled.”

The requirements for the USEF High School Equestrian Athlete program are simple: High school students must belong to USEF, log at least 100 hours of time training and participate in three competitions during the program year. If you’re currently enrolled in grades 9-12 and just now hearing about the program, you’re not too late to get started and earn a letter for all four years. The program was expanded to allow any current high school student the opportunity to earn a varsity letter retroactively. You can also get started in the middle of the program year, which runs from June 1 through May 31, and use hours and competitions from before you enrolled.

Robertson Equine Sales has announced that their fall auction will be Monday and Tuesday, October 29th and 30th in the Bradley Barn at the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Shelbyville, Kentucky. The auction will be held prior to The National Horse Show, Oct 31- Nov 4, 2012, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. This year’s auction will include the American Saddlebred, Hackneys and Roadsters in various divisions. Entries for the auction are being accepted until Sept. 17, 2012.

The benefits of the program reach far beyond the varsity letterman patch, lapel pin, and Certificate of Achievement students receive upon completing the program. Laura Orr of Topsail Beach, North Carolina, completed all four years of the program and described it as “an avenue through which kids in the equestrian sport can verify the time, sweat, hard work, victories and losses they have experienced as part of the world of horses. It’s how the girl who takes her math assignments to every show, the young man that spends his time between classes studying Chemistry, and the homeschooled kid can be part of something bigger than themselves.” Page 55

WHERE CHAMPIONS MEET
By: Kelley Reason
Devon, PA- Many champion riders and horses met again at Devon for their annual horse show held May 24-June 3, 2012 in Devon, PA. Classes were full of exciting teams and kept spectators on the edge of their seats. In 1896, the Devon Horse Show started as a one-day show. Now, years later, it has become the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed competition in the United States. It is internationally recognized, USEF-A rated, and one of the most exciting events to happen in the PA area. While it draws top competitors from around the world, the show continues to reflect the local traditions and lifestyles of the Philadelphia Main Line. In 2010 Devon had become just the fourth American horse show to be honored with the designation as a USEF Heritage Competition. This award is reserved for those competitions that have been in existence for more than a quarter century, promoted and grown the equestrian sport, and made a contribution to the community outside the gates of the horse show by achieving, maintaining and promoting the equestrian ideals of sportsmanship and competition. Devon was also recognized for the second consecutive year by the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame as the Horse Show of the Year. Devon has captured this national title over fifty percent of the time it has been awarded. In addition to the Horse Show Devon hosts a County Fair. The Country Fair is made up of over 28 committees that work together to help raise money for Bryn Mawr Hospital. There are over 2,000 volunteers that work on each committee, selling souvenirs, programs, candy, hamburgers hot dogs, ice cream, sodas and much more. Volunteers receive a special badge and are asked to work two shifts during the show.

By Donna Nabors The 2012 May Classic at the Shelbyville, Kentucky show grounds looked to be the start of a highly competitive horse show season. Despite other bigger shows going on during the same weekend, most classes had a very respectable turnout and the entries were of a high quality, something not always seen this early in the season. As usual, the pleasure-related classes had the most interest and at times the ring gave the resemblance of bumper cars going around. Fourteen competed in the Country Pleasure Novice Pleasure class, ten in the Country Pleasure Driving class, fifteen showed in the Three Gaited Show Pleasure class, eleven went in the 3-Gaited Show Pleasure and thirteen were in the Adult Country Pleasure class. It’s quite obvious that the popularity of these pleasure classes are growing and one can only surmise that the bigger shows have even more entries competing. A.J. Bruwer did well for his barn, taking a win in the Five Gaited Novice Class riding Without Any Doubt , a second in the Open Three Gaited class aboard Liberty’s Magic, a first in the Open Fine Harness guiding Three Gables Cracklin Rose, and another first in the Open Five Gaited class on New York’s real Magic. Although the Saturday night’s classes had a drizzling to contend with, there was still a good turnout of people in the covered stands and they didn’t hesitate to let the judge know who they thought deserved the blue ribbons. Not even the “Southern dew” can keep diehard Saddlebred lovers away from supporting their favorites now that the 2012 horse show season is in full swing.
