Gerhard Richter b. 1932, Dresden, Germany | lives in Cologne 1932 Born on February 9. 1951–56 Studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden. Paints a mural in the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden as his final project before graduation. 1961 After a trip to Moscow, leaves East Germany to settle in Düsseldorf. Enrolls at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he will study under Karl Otto Götz until 1963 and meet Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, and Konrad Fischer (also known as Konrad Lueg). 1962 Creates his first photograph-based paintings. 1963 Holds a solo exhibition at Möbelhaus Berges in Düsseldorf. 1964 Holds his a solo exhibition, at Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf. 1965 Creates his first etching, Hund, in an edition of eight. 1966 Exhibits with Sigmar Polke at Galerie h in Hannover, Germany. Begins to paint his color charts series. 1967 Works as a guest teacher at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg. Receives the Kunstpreis Junger Westen from the city of Recklinghausen, Germany. Creates his first monochrome Graue Malereien. 1969 Exhibits for the first time in New York, in Nine Young Artists, Theodoron Awards at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Begins to gather all the materials he has used in his paintings, such as photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, and so on, assembling them into a work he calls Atlas. He will continue to add to Atlas over the years. 1970 Richter’s graphic work is shown at the Museum Folkwang in Essen. 1971 Begins to teach at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, a position he will hold until 1994. 1972 Exhibits his Forty-Eight Portraits, a series of paintings of intellectuals based on photographs from an encyclopedia, made last year at the Biennale di Venezia. 1 page

Participates in Documenta 5 in Kassel, Germany. Exhibits Atlas at the Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and at the Suermondt Museum, Aachen. Represents Germany at the XXXVI Biennale di Venezia. 1973 Holds his first solo exhibition in New York, at Reinhard Onnasch Gallery. 1974 The Städtisches Museum Abteiberg in Mönchen- gladbach, Germany, organizes an exhibition of Richter’s work. 1975 Exhibits at the Kunstverein Braunschweig in Braun- schweig, Germany, and the Kunsthalle Bremen in Bremen, Germany. 1976 Atlas is shown at the Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld, Germany. 1977 The Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris presents an exhibition of Richter’s work. Takes up watercolors again and includes them in Atlas. Takes part in Documenta 6 in Kassel, Germany. 1978 Invited to teach at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada. Exhibits recent work at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The show will travel to the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London the following year. 1980 Exhibits again at the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. 1981 Receives the Arnold-Bode-Preis in Kassel. Richter’s work is featured in A New Spirit in Painting at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. 1982 Takes part in Documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany. The Kunsthalle Bielefeld in Bielefeld, Germany, organizes a show of Richter’s work that will later travel to the Mannheimer Kunstverein in Mannheim, Germany. 1983 Moves to Cologne. 1984 Exhibits at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Industrie in Saint-Étienne, France. 1985 Receives the Oskar-Kokoschka-Preis in Vienna. 1986 The first retrospective of Richter’s work opens at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and later travels to Berlin, Bern, and Vienna. 2 page

1987 A selection of Richter’s notes are published for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition Gerhard Richter: Werken op papier 1983–1986, notities 1982–1986, at the Museum Overholland in Amsterdam. 1988 A retrospective exhibition of Richter’s paintings is presented at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto and later travels to museums in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. Paints the 18. Oktober 1977 series, which portrays members of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group. Receives the Kaiserring prize from the city of Goslar, Germany. 1989 18. Oktober 1977 is exhibited at the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, Germany, and then travels to London, Frankfurt, New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. 1990 Atlas is displayed at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. 1991 The Tate Gallery in London holds a retrospective exhibition of Richter’s work. 1992 Participates in Documenta 9 in Kassel, Germany. 1993 The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris mounts an extensive retrospective exhibition of Richter’s work that later travels to the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. 1995 Exhibits at the Dia Center for the Arts in New York. Paints the S. mit Kind series. Receives the Wolf Prize from the Wolf Foundation. 1997 Takes part in the XLVII Biennale di Venezia, where he wins the Leone d’Oro. Exhibits abstract paintings at Documenta 10 in Kassel, Germany. Receives the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association. Richter’s work is included in the inaugural exhibition of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao,

2001 Awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts by the Université Catholique de Louvainla-Neuve in Belgium. 2002 The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds a large- scale retrospective of Richter’s work that spans forty years of his career. The exhibition later travels to the Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Creates Acht Grau, commissioned by Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, where the work is shown. 2004 The Galerie Neue Meister, Albertinum in Dresden opens three rooms dedicated to the artist’s work. Acht Grau is shown in the exhibition Gerhard Richter, Lawrence Weiner, Rachel Whiteread at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. 2005 The exhibition Gerhard Richter: Image after Image is presented at the Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst in Humlebaek, Denmark. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf mounts an exhibition of Richter’s work that will later travel to several museums in Japan. 2006 The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul and the Museumsberg Flensburg in Flensburg, Germany, present exhibitions of Richter’s work. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Passages: Beuys, Darboven, Kiefer, Richter. Participates in the II Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla in Seville. The solo exhibition Survey travels to various venues in Russia. 2007 Richter’s work is featured in the exhibition What Is Painting? Contemporary Art from the Collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany, and the 52nd Biennale di Venezia. The Museum Ludwig in Cologne shows his work Stained Glass Window for the Cologne Cathedral and publishes a book based on this project. 2008 The National Art Museum of China in Beijing presents an exhibition of the artist’s paintings from 1963 to 2007. The Städtisches Museum Schloß Morsbroich in Leverkusen, Germany, presents Gerhard Richter: Übermalte Fotografien, which includes more than five hundred works by the artist. The exhibition Gerhard Richter: Abstract Paintings is shown simultaneously at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Richter’s work is featured in the exhibition Here Is Every: Four Decades of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. 2009 A retrospective of the artist’s work, including sixty- three oil paintings and ninety works on paper, is shown at the Albertina in Vienna. 4 page

The National Portrait Gallery in London exhibits portraits by the artist from the 1960s to the present. Richter’s work is featured in the exhibition Colour Chart: Reinventing Colour, 1950 to Today at Tate Liverpool. 2010 The traveling exhibition Gerhard Richter. Sinopse was displayed at the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Montevideo, the Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo, Buenos Aires, and Casa Andrade Muricy, Curitiba, Brazil. His work is also shown at the Tokyo gallery Wako Works of Art, The Drawing Center, New York, the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester, UK, and the Kunstmuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland. 2011 The Tate Modern, London, inaugurates a major exhibition called Gerhard Richter: Panorama. The exhibition Gerhard Richter. Sinopse travels to CAIXA Cultural, Brasilia, Brazil, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, and Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul Ado Malagoli, Porto Alegre. His work is exhibited at Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburg, Germany, and The FLAG Art Foundation, New York.
