Boost Your Business Results: Three Breeders Share Profitable Business Models that Aren’t Dependent on Animal Sales Learn how they do it in this roundtable business discussion moderated by Ian Lutz of Cas-Cad-Nac Farm.
The Panel Kara McElroy is the owner of Buck Brook Alpacas in upstate NY, two hours from metropolitan NYC. Her farm, located in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, serves not only as an active alpaca breeding farm, but as a year-long agritourism destination. On the farm, the farm store operates with a very diverse line of alpaca products that showcase the appealing attributes of alpaca fiber. Kara will provide insight into running your farm as an agritourism destination that puts profitability back into your farm store.
Alvina Maynard is the owner operator of River Hill Ranch which exists to provide everyday luxury for your best life. Alongside laying hens, her kids and a dairy goat, she runs 100 alpacas for textiles, fiber and her award-winning alpaca meat products. River Hill Ranch hosts a thriving agritourism operation and retail store, where the public is invited to explore, shop and connect with her farm and each other. She is a trained sorter/grader, a shearer, a fiber artist and vends at several farmers’ markets and events throughout the year. Her operation helps to fill voids in a maturing alpaca livestock industry that she promotes by presenting at state and national agricultural events. Stacie Chavez and her husband Skip began breeding and showing Huacaya alpacas in 2009. In 2015 they moved to their current ranch, Sky Ridge Alpacas, in Tygh Valley, Oregon, where they have created a livestock model for alpaca ranching on the Oregon rangelands, following the same calling they had for the national fiber collection that they began – namely, to promote the development of a profitable livestock model for alpaca growers. They have a thriving, largely wholesale business in alpaca fiber and meat. Stacie also co-owns and operates Imperial Yarn, which produces and sells American-grown and made wool and alpaca yarns, knitwear and textiles.

Leverage Science for Better Breeding Outcomes: Breeding Better Alpacas in a Systems Context Dr. Mark Enns, Colorado State Univeristy
Mark grew up working on the family’s 4th generation wheat and cattle operation in northwest Oklahoma. Those early experiences stimulated his interest in livestock and agriculture and led him to undergraduate degrees from Tabor College, and Masters and Doctorate degrees in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Colorado State University. After completing his education, he worked two years in New Zealand as a visiting scientist for Landcorp Farming Ltd developing genetic improvement programs for beef cattle, deer, sheep, and goats. Subsequently, he spent 4 years at the University of Arizona and then joined the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University in 2001, where he teaches and runs an active research program focused on genetic evaluation and improvement of livestock using pedigree, performance and DNA marker information. The goal of his research program is to develop and improve genetic tools that enable breeders to make more accurate selection decisions. With that focus Mark and the team at what was then ARI, worked to develop expected progeny differences (EPD) for Huacaya and Suri animals in the AOA registry. Mark serves as co-leader of the CSU Center for Genetic Evaluation of Livestock—a center that calculates EPD for breed associations and producers groups both nationally and internationally. He is also the Western Region Secretary for the Beef Improvement Federation.

We aren’t making any more of these, and as a result the exceptional Princesa is the only offspring of her famous sire, the now-deceased Accoyo America Polaris, which we will offer for sale this year. A banner winner at her first show, Princesa has a fine, uniform fawn fleece that exhibits outstanding style and excellent density. She carries it on a correct, compact, well-balanced frame, and has a beautiful show-ring presence. But like all of our females, her true value lies in her genetics. Our Polaris daughters are outstanding production dams without exception, and central to our herd’s continued genetic progress on several fronts. And Princesa’s light fawn dam, the densely-fleeced Lancaster daughter Accoyo America Kore, is herself a champion whose fleece retains an AFD under 17 microns even now, in her production years. Princesa comes with a complimentary breeding to any of our sires when she is ready.

It is hard to part with this compelling Conopa’s Kahuna daughter! One of our best crias of 2016, Mockingbird has an extremely long-stapled, super fine fleece of outstanding micron uniformity. She is carrying excellent density and complete coverage from head to toe. Mockingbird is a substantial female with good bone, correct conformation and a true to type Huacaya head style. She comes with a complimentary breeding to any of our sires, and we would strongly recommend you consider our 5x champion and judge’s choice-winning brown male, CCNF Leviathan.
Lot 3 Mistic Superstition A Paca Fun Farm ARI: 35365556 DOB: 10/24/2016 Color: True Black Gender: Female Status: Maiden Sire: Casanova’s Silver Strike Dam: Red Granites Mystic By The Lad Looking for a typey young black female with tons of show potential? Look no further! Superstition is a picture perfect jet black female with lots of presence. She is the spitting image of her multi champion TB dam and blends in the fleece traits of the Snowmass Casanova line on her sire’s side. She carries a bright, dense fleece with a well defined crimp style that is uniformly expressed across her blanket. We expect her to follow in her dam’s footsteps in the show ring before becoming an excellent production female. She comes with a breeding to an A Paca Fun Farm or Paragon Alpacas herdsire. Depending on what color the buyer would like to produce we would recommend CCNF Elixir, A Paca Fun’s Ridiculous, or A Paca Fun’s Back in Black (true black Aussie .38 Special son).
Superstition’s multi champion dam.

Shaydee’s correct conformation, strong bone and impressive pedigree make her a perfect fit for any grey breeding program that wants to add stellar genetics. Her fleece is uniform, showing a high amplitude crimp architecture with excellent hand, and is consistent in color and staple length throughout her blanket. When you part her fiber you will see how bright and feel how buttery soft she is. Like her champion dam, sire and full sibling, Shaydee has style, presence and a sweet, easy going temperament. Her sire, Aussie .38 Special, is a one of a kind herdsire. His impressive fleece characteristics are expressed in Shaydee. Shaydee boasts a solid color foundation that will undoubtedly continue to produce excellence. If you are serious about your grey breeding program and want to add exceptional, proven genetics, Shaydee is for you. Nerissa’s dam Nautica has top 1% EPDs in five fleece categories and is full sister to our herdsire Accoyo America Kashmir, dam of our herdsire Accoyo America Spartacus, and grand-dam of our herdsire Accoyo America Arctic Warrior. Nerissa’s sire Snowmass Defiance has outstanding EPDs for almost every trait measured, and has made many stunning crias for us when bred to Accoyo America dams. One of them is Nerissa’s full sister, the multiple champion and Judge’s Choice winner Accoyo America Noepe. Nerissa herself carries an ultra fine, bright white fleece that is already showing excellent density and micron uniformity even as her secondaries continue to emerge. She is well puttogether with excellent substance of bone. This female should produce champions – and of course, she comes with a complimentary breeding. 2017 Histogram: AFD: 14.4, SD: 3.4, CV: 23.6, %>30: 0.5

He has a very bright, high amplitude, high frequency crimp style that is well organized and consistent throughout his blanket and into his extremities. His fleece has a wonderful soft handle and long staple. He is the fawn version of his multi-champion full sister, Alpaca Palace Houdini’s Issy, who sold at the 2016 POC auction. Her fleece is one of the most exquisite we’ve ever produced. We named her for the crystalline quality of her parted fleece—its stunning brightness combined with highly-crimped, individual bundling is reminiscent of her sire, Nautilus, and grandsire, Hemingway. Crystallina is a pleasing true-to-type female that will enhance fineness and fleece quality in any breeding program. Of course, she comes with a complimentary breeding. Licorice is an outstanding young female with a bright, fine-crimped, luxurious brown fleece. She’s a top show quality animal - really no surprise given that her true black dam Razzmatazz is the most decorated female in our herd, with seven championships to her name. That said, we also went out of the way to access the services of Licorice’s compelling sire, the Conopa son Xxxtreme Legacy XXX, to make this particular magic happen. In addition to her superior fleece attributes, Licorice has a solid frame with excellent substance of bone, beautiful coverage, and an attractive head style. Licorice will be a huge asset in a color breeding program. Like all of our maiden females, she comes with a complimentary breeding to any of our herdsires. We also appreciate the elite level of organization and character apparent across the blanket in this fleece. Leander boasts a strong, proportional frame with good bone, as well as the kind of macho presence that gives him the confident carriage of a proven sire even at age seven months in the photo at right. The less common genetic combination represented in his pedigree will create many options when you deploy Leander as a sire, while the phenotypic information submitted over years for his relatives will give him high EPD accuracies even after just one year of phenotypic data of his own, making it easier to use his particular genetics to best advantage right from the start. The fleece picture here says it all. Estela has an exquisitely bright, soft, finely crimped white fleece evidencing a high degree of organization, density and uniformity across her frame. Her dam Amariah’s pedigree includes some of our densest males along with a dam line that we particularly treasure, that of the El Nino sister Sunflower. Her sire Spartacus’s genetics reflect a combination of the fine Hemingway and Legacy lines that in Spartacus produced an animal that produces both high curvature and long staple in his offspring, a combination that is hard to find. Estela is a big female for her age, with correct, upright conformation and a pleasing presence. We would recommend breeding Estela to Snowmass Defiance or Accoyo America Arctic Warrior when she is ready. EPDs: Sire, Dam, Possible Service Sires

Zeus’ first round of offspring to hit the ground left us speechless. This is the first male that we have had in some years from El Nino’s Accoyo Ariel, and he is truly outstanding, packing all of the density we would expect from his dam’s exceptional line on a robust, heavy-boned frame. His fine, uniform fleece exhibits both a high crimp frequency and a long staple, extremely unusual in combination and traceable to his sire Spartacus, who also manifests these traits together. Our only disappointment with Aristotle is that he didn’t arrive on the East Coast in time for us to show him. That opportunity will be yours, along with the chance to integrate his valuable genetics into your breeding program.

It’s not uncommon that some of the best animals offered at auction are there in utero and so it was with Sybil when we purchased her dam, the Elite Legend daughter Rhythmic Romance, from Snowmass Alpacas at the 2016 Priority Auction. We felt Rhythmic would produce well paired with our sires, and certainly feel she did well by Sybil’s sire Seventh Samuri in the meantime: Sybil is an eye-catching, correct young female with a super bright, showy fleece that demonstrates excellent uniformity of micron and consistency of character across her frame. We love the depth of quality in her pedigree, particularly among the dams on both sides, and think she will make an excellent production asset when she is done showing. Sybil is the type of animal we like to take to one of our super dense, heavily- or full-Accoyo sires for the ultimate combination of fleece attributes - something to think about when she is ready for her complimentary breeding. And in case you were wondering: Born on the 4th of July, Sybil is named after a local Revolutionary war hero.

Lot 17 Hobby Horse Peruvian Solari Hobby Horse Farm ARI: 35252504 DOB: 07/12/2016 Color: Dark Fawn Gender: Female Status: Maiden Sire: Hobby Horse Tall Dark & Handsome Dam: NPA Leona
We strive for excellence in fleece qualities of fineness, uniformity, density, solid color, brightness, sound conformation, good temperament in a true-totype package. HOBBY HORSE PERUVIAN SOLARI is ALL THAT! Solari’s sire, our homebred uber-dense and fine TB herdsire (86 f/sqmm, 12:1SP, 7µ S-P) is the only black son of the highly regarded DDF Peruvian Rico Suave. Especially sought out to join our herd with outstanding EPDs for fineness, uniformity, and staple length her dam, NPA Leona (77 f/sqmm 11:1 SP, 3.6µ S-P), did not disappoint when she produced Solari! Solari was planned to have genetic strength for fineness and uniformity, decreased strong primaries, long staple length and high-density in bright, luscious color! This lovely girl covers black! Solari comes with a breeding to any solely owned Hobby Horse Herdsire. We recommend our 8X Champion and Judges Choice Hobby Horse Dancing on the Ceiling. But we really love this female for her combination of heavy-cutting fine fleece genetics. Angelfish’s dam, the champion Road Warrior daughter Treasure, sheared nearly 9 lbs of 20 micron fleece the same week she gave birth to Angelfish, her third cria, and Kingfish sheared well over 9 lbs of 19 micron fiber last spring himself. Angelfish is thus a perfect acquisition for a farm looking to upgrade fleece weights with zero compromise in lasting fineness and uniformity. And who doesn’t want to do that? Choosing a complimentary service sire for this versatile female will be particularly exciting, and our extensive list of sires virtually guarantees we have a male that can bring the right combination of attributes to meet your long-term development goals for your herd. 2017 Histogram: AFD: 13.5, SD: 2.4, CV: 17.9, %>30: 0.4 Awards: 1st Place and Champion, PAOBA 2016 2nd Place, NAAS 2017 2nd Place, NE Alpaca Expo 2017 EPDs: Sire, Dam, Possible Service Sires

She’d be a perfect fit for our own breeding program, with her fine, uniform fleece, excellent staple length, density, perfect balance and head. We wouldn’t bring anything less to the Parade of Champions. This time we matched Rocky with Snowmass Quechua’s Sarafina, one of our top-producing Peruvian dams. The result is just what we had in mind, and we know you’ll like her too. We’ve built our reputation by producing fleece that’s exceptionally fine and uniform with sparkling brightness, but, as we look to the future commercial market, we’ve put equal emphasis on increasing fleece length and density in our flock. Wing is evidence of how far we’ve come along that path. We’ll breed her this spring to our multiple champion fawn herdsire, TGF Royal Tribute (Snowmass Royal Challenger x Snowmass Adora Bella). She also qualifies for Xanadu Farm’s “Pedigree Enrichment Program” for ½ price breedings to any Xanadu Herdsire for as long as you own her. Bid high and take this beautiful female home with you.

Chaka Khan is a beautiful Snowmass Enlightenment rose-grey daughter that offers everything you could want in a grey alpaca. Her sire’s reputation speaks for itself, and her dam’s silver and rose grey pedigree are a perfect mix. Chaka Khan is a very upright girl with strong bone that carries a very fine, soft fleece with spectacular staple length. Her histogram, using a fleece sample from today, via a FibreLux, is recording an average micron of 19.0. Karakoram is worth a particularly close look with that in mind. We paired his sire Kashmir with one of our stud females, Delicata, to produce an animal with the genetic propensity to produce animals that are particularly uniform relative to their fineness. He’ll have high accuracy, elite EPDs for both traits, and will produce finely crimped fleeces in his offspring as well. His own ultra-fine, bright, uniform and beautifully organized fleece reflects this inheritance. Karakoram is the complete package, too, with a strong frame, good coverage and attractive head style. When we purchased the full Accoyo stud female Encore from Heather’s Acre last year, she came with a little fawn cria tagging alongside - and that cria, the Best Man’s Elite Reflection daughter Cinnamon, has impressed us more and more with each passing season. We just love her phenotype, with her rock-solid frame, classic wedge-shaped head, and stylish, dense, crimpy fleece. A top caliber fawn show female, she also represents a great opportunity to bring the genetics represented in her completely white pedigree to bear in a colored breeding program. When she’s ready, we would recommend you consider the fawn full Accoyo male Accoyo America Enterprise or the dark fawn Accoyo America Navigator for a colored cria, or Levi’s 501 or Accoyo America Kingfish for a higher probability of white.

We breed for females like the full Accoyo Dulcina for our foundation herd, and rarely offer them for sale. Dulcina was bred to maximize her genetic potential to produce dense offspring with high fleece weights relative to their fineness and staple length. Both her sire and dam are exceptionally dense and heavycutting animals, descending in turn from imports that were similarly distinguished even among their Accoyo import peers. We believe females like Dulcina are key to adding to the intrinsic value of alpacas now that the seed stock industry has largely reached the productive limits of fineness - and you will understand the incredible options her genetics create when you consider which of our herdsires to choose for her complimentary breeding. Levi’s 501, Defiance, and Kashmir are among those we believe would pair exceptionally well with this attractive female.

Kenene is a Swahili girl’s name that means “a little important thing,” because that’s how we felt when we saw this attractive young female hit the ground. Her genetics fuse two lines that are extremely important to advances in the uniformity of micron within our herd, that of the dam line Isidora through her dam, Kazuri, as well as those of her sire Defiance, both of whom have top 1% EPDs for SD. Kenene’s genetic legacy also ensures she will be a prepotent producer of dense, perennially finely-fleeced offspring -- and that’s what makes this little important thing too valuable to pass up. Show this correct, competitive white female in the show ring next fall, and then bring her to us in 2018 for her complimentary breeding to the sire of your choice to add to the number of little important things in your breeding program. Damselfish’s first fleece is exceptionally soft-handling and bright. It opens cleanly to reveal dense staples and a beautiful bold crimp style that carries across her frame and into her extremities. She is showing good density and producing a lot of staple length too, courtesy of her dam, the Ulysses daughter Ariadne, in particular. And with Accoyo America Ulysses on both sides of her pedigree, this is an animal we expect will both demonstrate outstanding maintenance of elite fleece characteristics throughout her life, and pass those traits on reliably to her offspring. Feminine and correct in conformation, and demonstrating real presence, Damselfish will be fun to breed. We would suggest breeding her to Levi’s 501 or Accoyo America North Star, but her genetics are diverse enough to pair with nearly any sire we own.

Fawn lovers can appreciate uniformity of true, rich, light fawn color. That’s only the tip of the tornado when it comes to what DHF Peruvian Irene has to offer. She is the best result yet from our fawn breeding group, expressing color dilution from both of her parents. Her dam Katrina, a Royal Fawn granddaughter, has been a top, consistent producer for us. Royal Fawn’s prepotency for elite color production and historic impact on the industry speaks for itself. Add to that Irene’s sire, our light fawn, 7/8 Accoyo, Accoyo America Samba who has IAO Supreme Champion Sequin as a grand dam and Camilio’s Accoyo Endurance as his sire. This unique blend of genetics is the platform for Irene, who displays an exceptionally bright, fine and well formed crimpy fleece on a compact strong frame. Pax is the product of a tried and true fleeceproduction combination, that of the Sunflower-line Accoyo America Heliantha with Snowmass Defiance, both of which have excellent EPDs, especially with regard to SDAFD, which we regard as the trait of most importance to the value maximization of alpaca fiber in the commercial marketplace. There’s plenty of lasting fineness and density in this pedigree also Pax’s sire is sporting an 18 micron fleece at age eight, and his dam a 20 micron fleece at age 7 - both of them with less than 1% of their fibers over 30 microns even in middle age. It was a great privilege at the 2016 Parade of Champions sale to offer our young Champion male, CCNF Leviathan, one of the first Elixir/Matrix Majesty crosses to have ever come out of our breeding program. Already the owner of multiple banners when he got up on stage at the POC, Leviathan kept winning Championships for his new owners - our friends at Stillmeadow Farm - last fall as well. Now we are pleased to introduce Leviathan’s maternal aunt! A regular member of our 2016/2017 show strings, CCNF Charmaine builds on last year’s narrative, as she is the full sister of CCNF Capuchin, Leviathan’s dam! Though lighter in color (beige vs., dark brown), than her older sibling, the goods are all there. With dense, bright, and uniform fleece on a beautifully conformed frame, we have little doubt that she will make an excellent foundation female. On the off-chance that no one understands what is being offered here, we will of course gladly bring her back to VT and use her in our breeding program. Either way, we will begin breeding this young female with Elixir as soon as he arrives home for the season around July 1st.

Buck Brook Viviana is a amazing female sired by 3x Judges Choice winner and 11x champion Beethoven’s Dorian. She exhibits stunning qualities in both fleece and conformation. Her fleece is uniform and bright with a long staple. She exhibits excellent architecture throughout her staple. The hand of this fleece is incredible, and speaks to its overall uniformity. Vivi, as we like to call her, has the beautiful phenotypic head style that her sire is most famous for throwing in his progeny. She has excellent conformation and substance of bone. Viviana will be great addition to your foundation. She has an amazing presence, fleece and is stocked with color genetics and will be an excellent addition to your show string and breeding stock. You may choose from any of our herdsires for Vivi’s complimentary breeding. We would recommend our go-to male for elite color, Snowmass Solar Paramount, or, to tap her black genetics, our champion black male Renaissance Ridge Cicero.
Lot 42 Accoyo America Brooklyn Little Creek Farm/Accoyo America ARI: 35126881 DOB: 04/26/2016 Color: White Gender: Female Status: Maiden Sire: Accoyo America Road Warrior Dam: Amber Autumn Lynette Brooklyn was bred to be a prepotent producer of dense, heavy-cutting offspring that retain elite fineness. Her dam Lynette is a daughter of the full Accoyo sire Accoyo America Saturn, an El Nino son out of an especially important Vengador daughter named Saturna. And Brooklyn’s sire is Road Warrior, who consistently conveys density to his offspring along with fineness and outstanding organization. Brooklyn’s attractive phenotype and elite fleece made her a shoo-in for our fall show string - in fact, we liked her so much that we rebred her dam to Road Warrior and skewed the odds in favor of a male cria this time. When she is ready to breed Brooklyn is the perfect match for a male like Accoyo America Kingfish or Accoyo America Polar Storm for her complimentary breeding. 2017 Histogram: AFD: 16.4, SD: 3.1, CV: 18.8, %>30: 0.5 Awards: 2nd Place, PAOBA 2016 EPDs: Sire, Dam, Possible Service Sires

Mayhems Apallonia is a very special young lady with tremendous genetic assets. The combination of Crescent Moon’s Sixtus and Beethoven in her pedigree, combined with a future complementary breeding to the renowned herdsire CCNF Man in Black…it’s difficult to say much more. This is a quality female with notable black genetics who brings with her a breeding to a sire that needs no introduction. That said, Apallonia does not just offer an outstanding pedigree, she brings an excellent phenotype to your program as well. She is conformationally spot-on and carries a very fine, soft-handling fleece with a lovely crimp style and excellent brightness. The average micron of her fleece is just 17.9, measured with Fibrelux. Apallonia will bring advantages to any black breeding program – add her to yours!

Talk about a genetic package: This attractive young female, the first cria out of our champion brown female TGF Tallulah, is not only the daughter of Snowmass Royal Challanger, but her granddam is the full sister of Beethoven’s Dorian. Picola Moon has a finely-crimped, bright brown fleece which shows good uniformity across her frame. We like this young female’s coverage, head style, and presence too. A compact, balanced young female with a true to type head and luxurious coverage, Blue Jean Baby has both the phenotype and the genotype to produce your next generation of show winners. That said, we really prize her for the combination of genetic attributes that will move the industry itself forward, namely the propensity to produce offspring with heavy, uniform fleeces that hit the market’s sweet spot with regard to fineness. Your choice of a complimentary herdsire for this female will be a particularly exciting one, as she will pair well with nearly any of the sire in our herd. 2017 Histogram: AFD: 18.3, SD: 3.4, CV: 18.7, %>30: 0.6 EPDs: Sire, Dam, Possible Service Sires

They were the best simply because neither density and shear weight nor fineness and uniformity were sacrificed, but maintained in a balanced combination. Captain Jack has that balanced combination. He is a handsome, well-conformed junior herdsire with a true-toalpaca type head and fleece to die for. His sire, Cherokee Warrior, is my favorite Road Warrior son, with a finecrimped, long staple fleece-a superlative, high-energy breeding herdsire. Grey runs through her dam’s side, and solid color runs through her sire’s side. Well proportioned, Lacey is a strong boned young female and at only 7 months she stands above many others of her age. She has a square frame, correct bite, uniform color and excellent coverage. Her honey colored fleece is consistent throughout, showing a high degree of brightness, impressive staple and a soft hand with a well defined crimp architecture. She is sired by multi-champion Crystal K-O, a proven champion line with strong color. Her dam offers Danko, Silverado, Salvador Dali and Linnea for grey genetics. This is a solid female with solid genetics for a grey breeding program. Lacey sells with a breeding to any of our herdsires. We think Aussie .38 Special will only enhance her inherent qualities.

She also inherited the square conformation and up right presence of her sire, and the soft handle of her dam. With all the powerhouse genetics behind her, we look forward to seeing what this girl will do! She comes with a breeding to an A Paca Fun Farm or Paragon Alpacas herdsire. Depending on the color the buyer is shooting for, we would recommend A Paca Fun’s Ridiculous, Aussie .38 Special or CCNF Elixir.

It was our quest to add more females with outstanding density and staple length to our herd that led us to acquire Felicity’s dam, the El Nino daughter Falissa. And we quite liked the breeding she had on her at the time, to the exceptionally fine and uniform full Accoyo male NPA Accoyo Antonio. Felicity is the result of that pairing. A well-built, nicely sized young female, Felicity has a heavy 17.9 AFD fleece that demonstrates excellent uniformity of micron and the staple length that is so valuable paired with many of the dominant sires now working, and her west coast genetics create diversification opportunities for breeders back east. A true production asset, we’d probably pair Felicity with Accoyo America Kingfish or Hobby Horse Rico’s Arctic Rendezvous as soon as she is ready. But as she is not closely related to our working males, you will have a large list of compelling herdsires from which to choose. EPDs: Dam, Possible Service Sires
