The ITMA board of directors has set forth a bold initiative to revitalize our mission to make Education First, and ensure the future of our industry through partnerships with universities, an enhanced internship program, educational events, and much more. The textile industry is a study in contrasts as it embraces tradition while adapting to meet today’s challenges. The need for high-quality, on-trend fabrics, leathers and trims is as great as ever, while the technology and marketplace continues to evolve.

Creating and delivering fabrics that offer the level of design and durability today’s consumers want is no small feat. Luckily, growing demand continues to fuel the industry. From online resources such as Houzz and Pinterest to HGTV and etailers’ flash sales, home improvement and interior decorating are hot topics.

“We have a broader audience than at any point in recent times,” says Zack Taylor, president of furniture manufacturer Wesley Hall. A former textile executive, Taylor says this trend has made a big impact on his high-end, design-driven business. “The popularity of Pinterest has consumers paying more attention to design and home fashion than ever before. It gives them a language to communicate what they like and don’t like, even if they can’t verbalize it.”

Another opportunity for differentiation at Wesley Hall is that its home furnishings are manufactured domestically.

A Shifting Marketplace While demand may be steady, the textiles marketplace has changed dramatically in recent years. “The growth of imports has diminished the role of middle to better textile manufacturers,” says Lee Kabat, president of Home Accent Fabrics. “Not only has the pie gotten smaller, but we’re now splitting the pie too many ways.”

Home Accent Fabrics responds to these challenges by keeping its overhead and staffing low. “We are very lean, we have a small infrastructure,” says Kabat. “Most importantly, we try not to be everything to all people—or else you’ll get swamped with inventory. We focus on being a boutique converter of decorative fabrics specializing in color, and we offer tightly coordinated lines.”

Embracing Innovation Holding on to traditional models while embracing new methodologies and technologies is the challenge for today’s textile and home furnishings producers.

Wesley Hall has embraced technology in its roles as both buyer and manufacturer. With the advent of fabrics such as Sunbrella® and Crypton®, the role of performance textiles has grown tremendously, says Taylor. “Performance textiles really resonate with consumers and are transforming the industry.”

Digital printing is also shaping the direction of the industry, says Kabat. “While the cost hasn’t yet caught up with the technology, the efficiencies over screen printing are significant.” Digital printing enables Home Accent Fabrics to produce lower minimum quantities while expanding its number of designs and colors.

Recruiting Talent “One of the main challenges I see our industry facing is the recruitment of new and fresh design talent,” says Todd Bowles, principal and CEO of Convergence, an NC-based textile design and merchandising consulting firm. “When I started my career there was young talent coming up behind me. But with the increase in offshore production, many domestic mills have shut down, making it difficult for young professionals to successfully make a living—so they abandon home textiles to pursue other design related careers or tragically, move out of design altogether.”

ITMA is addressing this challenge with its mixers, internship program and Educational Foundation.

“We need companies in our industry to attend ITMA’s events and realize the importance of hiring these talented individuals,” says Bowles. “They are ambitious, crazy-talented, and they are the future.

We must start teaching them and grooming them to take the reins.” h

The company continues to embrace new technology in its manufacturing operations as well, including recent investments in automated cutting machines.

“What I love about technology is you realize you can enhance and evolve your story, without sacrificing any part of it,” says Taylor. “People think about technology and have a job-loss mindset; that hasn’t been the case for us. Technology isn’t changing who we are, it’s supporting and enhancing who we are.”

Growing Future Leaders Recognizing the need to nurture and recruit young talent in the textile industry, ITMA has created its own Internship Program. Designed by ITMA’s Educational Foundation, the internship offers students opportunities to see and experience a variety of industry-related careers first-hand.

The ITMA Educational Foundation committee consists of a mix of industry representation including upper management from member companies, furniture industry liaisons and studio owners. The goal of the internship program is to partner as many students as possible with ITMA Member company sponsors. Most internships are paid positions that last for eight weeks, although other opportunities may be available.

Financial assistance may available through the ITMA Educational Foundation for sponsor companies, including $2,000 per intern for salary and an additional $2,000 stipend for travel and housing. The internship is open to upperclassmen and graduate students who have declared a major in textile design.

Joe Ruggiero Favorite sources of inspiration: My travels around the world and the world around me Throughout his 40-year career, Joe Ruggiero has become an innovator in identifying trends, and creating fresh, sophisticated yet practical ideas for consumers around the world. He brought home design to network television, teaching tens of millions of people worldwide how to take a design concept and turn it into a beautiful, practical living space.

Ruggiero launched his home collection in 2000 and it currently includes upholstery for Miles Talbott, wood furniture for Gat Creek and outdoor furniture for Terra Furniture, fabrics for Sunbrella® and all weather wicker for Viro. In 2009 Ruggiero added bedding and drapery for Casa Fiora, as well as a new Sunbrella decorative trims collection for Phoenix Trims.

Ruggiero is also in development for a new lighting collection for Wildwood Lamps. For Tobi, 2010 was a breakout year in that she introduced her DIY design service, InBox Interiors, and launched design and mentoring programs, which have risen in popularity ever since. Color’s immediacy makes it pivotal to great design and today’s color direction is firmly focused on pastels. An inspired option for homewares of all types, this on-trend palette celebrates a softer side of familiar hues. From shades of pink and blue to the purest whites, color experts attribute the popularity of these easygoing shades to consumers’ quest for calm. Offering a breath of fresh air in interior design, these delicate tints are prized for their ability to positively influence and counterbalance demanding lifestyles.

Pantone® advanced this momentum with its selection of Rose Quartz (13-1520) and Serenity (15-3919) for its 2016 co-colors of the year. Rose Quartz, a warm, gentle rose tone conveys compassion and a sense of composure while Serenity, a cool and tranquil blue, provides a calming effect. The pair were selected

by Pantone as ambassadors to represent today’s collective mindset and to provide a much-needed sense of tranquility and inner peace.

Transcending both soft and hard surfaces, Rose Quartz and Serenity bring a sense of calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes—matte, metallic and glossy—the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. For more splash and sparkle, combine them with silver or bright hues.

Challenging traditional perceptions of color association, the combination of these shades is groundbreaking. “Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

New Product Appeal

Increasing in popularity across all areas of design, pastel hues complement trending design influences such as nature, nostalgia and geometrics. These candy-colored palettes offer new possibilities as they are mixed and merged with timely patterns and design-forward shapes and silhouettes. Designers in textiles, consumer products and interiors have an expansive palette of soft shades to draw upon as they combine it with elements of texture, function and luxury to create new looks with fresh appeal.

Whites Come on Strong

It comes as no surprise that major paint manufacturers chose shades of white to represent them in 2016. According to Benjamin Moore, white frames and flatters and offers a guide that directs the eye to multiple color encounters. Its 2016 Color of the Year, Simply White (OC-117), encourages an interplay of whites and light and creates nuance and subtle beauty. When paired with black, white conveys intent and celebrates form as fearless, high chroma colors punctuate the black and white landscape.

Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year, Alabaster (SW 7008), is a true neutral symbolic of new beginnings.

In a frenzied world of overstimulation, Alabaster offers a sense of personal solace and revival to weary minds. “Alabaster represents Alabas a straightforward and necessary SW 70 ter 08 shift to mindfulness,” says Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams director of color marketing. “It provides an oasis of calmness, spirituality and ‘less is more’ visual relief.

Alabaster is neither stark nor overly warm, but rather an understated and alluring white.”

Whites can be used to set a tone for healing, rest and mediation in both residential and commercial spaces, offers Sherwin-Williams. They create a yin and yang harmony when paired with contrasting dark colors and can bridge transitional and traditional styles when used with light blushes or grays. Shades of white provide a neutral aesthetic, making it a versatile foundation for many design sensibilities.

Representing the lighter, gentler side of the red family, pink conveys a sense of innocence and romance. A welcoming shade, its optimism has long been noted in references such as “rosy cheeks” and “rose-colored glasses.”

2017 Home Color Palettes Color and design are at a crossroads, according to Pantone’s Eiseman. “We’re all familiar with consumers’ constant desire to see something new, yet they still want, in many cases, to have somewhat of a familiar comfort level,” said Eiseman. “We have to assess our customers’ aspirations by using credible forecasts as a guide to invigorated color design palettes that will inform and encourage new color directions. The question is:

ACQUIRED TASTE – Characterized by a mix of colors and textures not commonly seen together, the shades in Acquired Taste combine for a palette that is refined yet luxurious. It boasts Orange Chiffon, Mulberry, Brandied Melon, Pale Gold, a dove gray and a muted pink.

What can we do to tweak our color palettes to make consumers stop and take notice?”

FOREST BATHING – A stress-reducing collection of shades, these looks are inspired by the Japanese practice of forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku). Relating the calming and mood-elevating properties of a walk in the woods, this palette features several shades of green and blue-green contrasted with Grape Kiss and refreshing Acid Lime.

Eiseman unveiled the 2017 Pantone® View Home + Interiors color palettes at the 2016 International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago. By Trisha McBride Ferguson Who better to ask about the influence of textiles than a style leader in upholstered home furnishings? We talked with Holly Blalock, vice president of merchandising and marketing for CR Laine, about all things fabric and how they impact this design-driven manufacturer.

How important are textiles to your products?

Well, CR Laine’s mantra is “Style. Comfort. Color.”—so they are essential to our business. Color is a big part of who we are, and it’s the fabrics that bring the color to our furnishings. And for me personally, textiles are my first love.

Why do you believe fabrics are important in upholstered furnishings?

Textiles are the emotional part of the purchase—it’s the first thing that your eye is drawn to. If you walk into a room and you see a chair that has a fantastic pattern on it, when you go to tell your friends about it you’ll probably describe it as ‘the red floral chair’—not ‘the wing chair.’ Of course then you’re going to sit in the chair and decide if it’s the right size and softness, but I think the fabric definitely characterizes the emotion of the purchase.

How do your customers react to the textile aspect of your products?

When retailers and designers are looking at our line, they tell us they are attracted to both our fabrics and silhouettes—and like consumers, it is often the textiles that catch their attention first.

What colors are you excited about right now?

We have two color directions: we love our strong, bold colors and we’re also really embracing whispers of color. So you’ll see two color directions coming from us. You’ll see very light, icy blues—a palette we’re calling ‘Glacier.’ It includes leathers, sophisticated linens, and a polished cotton that has some surface sheen, yet no pattern—so it’s a modern solid. Also in this palette is a soft lilac, a blush and mint. In counterpoint to that, we’ve got our second color direction of richly saturated hues including cobalt and fuchsia. Additionally, we’ve got an exciting look using yellow ochre. It’s a saffron-like tone that pairs brilliantly with our deeper hues.

Can you describe some of the patterns you are using that inspire you?

I’m very excited about this fantastic cobalt and fuchsia agate pattern (Little Rock) from our upholstery collaborator Tobi Fairley’s signature collection with Duralee. Another favorite is a sophisticated watercolor-type tropical pattern (Oasis Midnight), a floral without a flower, in shades of blue—it’s designed by Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke of Madcap Cottage for Robert Allen. One of my top picks is a little irregular ‘X’ that almost looks sewn, like a cross-stitch, but it’s printed. And there’s a Venetian over-scaled damask pattern that appears stonewashed and weathered with a vintage patina, that also looks amazing. h

ITMA Educational Foundation Industry Tours

For three days in February, a packed tour bus shuttled among fabric mills, furniture plants and showrooms in North Carolina on an educational tour that brought eager textile students face-to-face with companies interested in meeting the next generation of talent.

A group of 36 students, from schools across the United States, took part in the twentieth annual “Fabric: From Concept to Consumer” educational tour sponsored by the International Textile Market Association. Participating companies included: Altizer & Co., Bennettsville Printing, Burlington Manufacturing Services, De Leo Textiles, Keystone Weaving, Se7en, and Wesley Hall. Thank you!

Textile Technology Center– Training Initiative

The Textile Technology Center at Gaston College has received $150,000 in additional funding from the NC state legislature.

This recurring money is targeted to help develop and train a skilled workforce for the textile industry, which has seen a dramatic resurgence in the past two years.

In 2014, the textile industry in NC saw $523 million in new investment and the creation of 1,020 new jobs.

As textile expansions are continuing, the need exists to train a new textile labor pool, as much of the available industry expertise and skill set has declined in recent years.

The NC State legislature, in response to this growing need, has selected the Textile Technology Center to develop a textile training program in response to customer input and identified needs. A multi-faceted program, focusing on hands-on operator training and technical education/skills, has been established and numerous training opportunities have been made available this year for NC textile industry personnel.

In addition to technical training by equipment vendors, textile educational seminars and training are also being offered to help educate new industry personnel on a variety of subjects (yarn data interpretation, fabric testing, and Textile 101 classes).

High school outreach programs are also underway to educate students about the rebound in the textile industry and the new career opportunities available, with the aim to create a wider labor pool.

The Textile Technology Center and its program participants are encouraged by the confidence and support displayed by the state legislature for this market segment and will continue to seek and respond to new training requests and needs.

This pattern developed out of an interest in my environment, specifically the variety of visual information found on the exteriors of houses in Savannah, Georgia. Each home with an individual set of colors, quirks, and textures collaborate to convey an independent personality. When viewed as a community of homes, however, they nestle seamlessly together.

Inspired by a handmade paper yarn, Japanese Shifu Kimono, I noticed writing from the original paper was visible on the surface of the cloth.

Thinking about this idea of hidden stories woven into fabric, I created a series that explored the transition of time and storytelling through hand-dyed color gradations and complex, layered surfaces. In this sample, I cut long orange yarn floats and used these tails to stuff the triangular pockets. Although parts of the story have been hidden within the fabric, evidence of their existence is visible through the orange edges on the triangles.

My focus was to capture these qualities by pulling elements from a mixture of the house exteriors and reimagine their interaction through a repeat pattern. These characteristics were then overlapped to evoke a similar experience of walking through the neighborhood streets of Savannah, Georgia.

RESOURCE CENTER & HOME FASHIONS “RC” RESOURCE CENTER “HFRC” or “the resource centers” These outlying buildings are located just a few blocks away on Wrenn and Hamilton Streets, and house another 15+ suppliers. A free shuttle ride takes you to the buildings, and then it’s easy to walk between the HFRC (formerly the Fabric Center) – shown above –, RC, and surrounding venues.

An easy walk from the Suites through Market Square takes you to the elevators for the tower, home to more than 40 of the larger mills and suppliers of leather and trim. Showtime appointments are common, but “walk-ins” can sometimes be accommodated.
