from the President I recently had a friend who is a CPA for a big bank ask me, “So what exactly does ITA do?” At first, I wanted to tell him all about Showtime and how great it is, and how the ITA is a year-round resource, an advocate for our members when it comes to legislative action, regulation, banking, logistics and how the list goes on and on. I could have also told him about the ITA Educational Foundation and all the great things it is doing. Or explained programs such as the Virginia Jackson Design competition, industry tours, the ITA Founders Scholarship, and our partnerships with top universities in textile design. I realized I could go on and on about these phenomenal aspects of the ITA and its supporting members, but after careful thought I answered with this:

We help create emotion.

Now you can imagine the expression on his face, because the term emotion for an accountant is a foreign concept. So, I explained it to him in this way: Furniture, bedding, and window treatments are all large, important purchases for consumers—and therefore there’s a lot of emotion tied in with buying home furnishings. Whether it’s the couch the newlyweds excitedly buy for their first home, or the bedding you apprehensively help your daughter pick out for her freshman dorm room as she heads off to college, or the leather recliner you help your aging father prudently purchase because you know it might be his last—they’re emotional purchases.

But remember, I said we “help” create emotion. We don’t do it on our own. It’s through ITA members, and their partnerships with our buyers, that we “help” create that emotion. Together, we’re part of why the jewel-toned damask on the newlyweds’ sofa perfectly matches the stripe on the chair that was a wedding gift from a sibling. Or that the brightly hued floral print on your daughter’s dorm room bedding helps her express her personality in a new world away from home for the first time.

And that the smell and feel of the leather on your aging father’s recliner brings him warm memories of his baseball glove that he got for his 10th birthday, and the endless summer days of his youth playing with friends.

This is the emotion we help create, this is the emotion I told my friend about, this is the emotion that we are proud of and work hard to achieve. This is the emotion our ITA members thank you for helping us create.

Emerging advancements in other industries are paving the way for products and applications in home furnishings.

Here’s a look at innovations with the potential to influence and inspire smart home textiles.

Smart Textiles Smart textiles (or e-textiles) have been developing in various forms for decades and represent a multidisciplinary global area of research and product development. At the most basic level, they are textiles that provide added value to the wearer.

“Today’s smart fabrics integrate electronics into materials, garments and home textiles,” says Dr. Jesse Jur, Assistant Professor at NC State University’s College of Textiles.

“They can sense and harvest energy from the user, as well as act as communication platforms.”

Smart textiles can be aesthetic-enhancing or performance-enhancing. Aesthetic-enhancing fabrics may light up or change color. They can also gather energy from the user or environment by harnessing vibrations, sound or heat and react to these inputs.

Performance-enhancing textiles are one of the fastestgrowing segments and have significant potential in healthcare, athletics, and military applications.

In healthcare, clothes featuring integrated sensors measuring heart rate and respiration are already in use.

One of the earliest applications of smart fabrics is their use in hospitals to prevent bed sores. Technologies like these are also being tested in office environments to understand ergonomics.

A rapidly growing area of research is the use of textiles as communication mediums. “We’ve seen textile advancements come about in the past few years with the ability to perform low-power communications, low-power Bluetooth communications, and applications of IOT (internet of things),” says Jur. “IOT principles are a promising fit for home furnishings—the potential of having a connected home that can inform you of air quality in the house or the temperature in the refrigerator.”

Project Jacquard For insight into the real-life applications of smart textiles, check out the partnership between Google and Levi’s brand. Designed specifically for urban bike commuters, the collaboration resulted in the creation of The Levi’s® Commuter™ Jacket. It allows wearers to control their mobile experience and connect to a variety of services, such as music or maps, directly from the jacket. A tag wirelessly connects the conductive yarns in the jacket’s cuff to the wearer’s mobile device. Remove the tag, and the entire garment is as washable and durable as usual.

What’s a Smart Fabric?

Whether you call it a smart fabric or an e-textile, the terms refer to technically enhanced textiles that incorporate capabilities for sensing (biometric or external), communications (usually wireless), power transmission, and interconnection.

Design Matters In healthcare, the possibilities for smart fabrics are unlimited. Consider inventions such as drugreleasing textiles, anti-bacterial fabrics, wearables with built in neurofeedback systems, and smart fabrics that alert a parent when a baby stops breathing. The health and beauty industries aren’t far behind, with research currently underway on fabrics that transmit moisturizers, perfume, and antiaging properties.

a mundane activity sensual while challenging assumptions about form and function.

In “Textile Disobedience,” a project in collaboration with the Interactive Institute, PLAY Studio & the Swedish School of Textiles, University College of Boras, Sweden, the goal was to explore textile patterns that behave differently than what we typically expect. The “Rather Boring” tablecloth has hidden messages that become visible when the tablecloth is exposed to heat.

Applications in automotive, military and firefighting are also in development as science finds ways to perfect self-heating garments, CO2-sensing textiles, smart fabrics with integrated solar panels, lightembedded garments and fibers that generate electricity when in motion.

Innovations supporting elderly and handicap populations are also a good fit for smart fabrics. Imagine a garment that emits a signal when the wearer is in distress, sensors that aid the visually impaired, or a carpet fiber that emits an alert when a person has fallen and is not getting up.

Fun with Technology While much of today’s research focuses on using smart fabrics that improve performance, artists and designers are exploring the more experiential aspects of the technology.

At the 2011 Ambience conference in Sweden, science met interior design with an exhibition named: “Furniture that wants to hang out.” On display was a pouf that breathes and moves to keep its user company, purring to show its appreciation when someone sits on it. Another exhibit showed a chair that emulated an exotic bird—changing its color and emitting sound as visitors approached.

Pom Pom & Essential wall dimmers offer a fun and funky alternative to the traditional plastic dimmer switch. Touching these soft textile-covered switches dims the light. The product succeeds in making

On the interior design front, designers have created a wall that changes shape as you walk past it.

Researchers Delia Dumitrescu and Hanna Landin Small produced one utilizing programmed motors that rotate under the textile’s surface and react to movement in the surroundings.

The Face of Advancement The field of fibretronics explores how electronic and computational functionality can be integrated into textile fibers. In firstgeneration products, a sensor was attached to the apparel. Second-generation products embedded the sensor in the garment, and now, in third generation wearables, the garment is the sensor.

Sources of inspiration: I always draw inspiration from the Parisian fashion runway.

Colors or color combinations: Although I appreciate neutrals, I’m a bigger fan of wielding powerful, vibrant color choices in my work. Vivid jewel tones, like emerald green, navy blue and amethyst, always catch my eye.

Projects or collaborations: One of my favorite projects was featured in Traditional Home’s April 2016 issue. Another exciting collaboration is the national ad campaign for DXV and my furniture collection with Leathercraft.

“My goal is to ensure that my clients’ homes are always classic, chic and without an expiration date,” says interior designer Corey Damen Jenkins.

“I take cues from the fashion runway, so vibrant color, layered patterns and strong architectural bones are trademarks of my work.”

Jenkins’ career reached new heights in 2011 after television audiences voted him the winning design star of HGTV’s Showhouse Showdown. Since then, he’s been featured in Traditional Home, The Wall Street Journal, House Beautiful and more. In 2016, Jenkins’ premiered his first couture furniture collection, Corey Damen Jenkins Exclusively for Leathercraft.

Jenkins strongly believes in giving back to the design community. His firm supports a number of charities, including Housing Works: Design On A Dime, Variety For The Children, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and DIFFA: Dining By Design in New York City.

Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year reflects the serenity of nature.

At the crossroads of style and pattern is color—a key element in any successful home furnishings product. As consumers take an even greater interest and more interactive role in their home design, the importance of color grows. There’s no better tool for expressing personality or creating a point of view than color, and so it has become the foundation of today’s home interior products and design. Here’s a look at Pantone’s Color of the Year: Greenery, and a few of the palettes Pantone considers influential in the coming year.

“trans-seasonal” color works equally well with a variety of shades—as illustrated in Pantone’s 10 accompanying palettes for 2017. The groupings, ranging from pastels to neutrals, metallics and deeper shades, demonstrate its versatility.

Rebirth. Renewal. Revitalization. All words that come to mind with Pantone’s pick for 2017’s Color of the Year: Greenery.

In announcing the choice, Pantone Color Institute’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman said, “Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

The theory proposes that the more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their need to immerse themselves in nature-inspired beauty.

Green Peace A reflection of both foliage and the lushness of nature, Greenery is vital and refreshing. Described as “nature’s neutral,” the bright yellow-green makes a soothing yet crisp contrast when paired with airy whites. This

In the Fathomless palette, ocean blues and aquas surround Greenery and a darker shade of lime. Forest Floor has Greenery partnered with earthier tones of green as well as the self-describing shades of “Grape Kiss,” “Redwood,” and “Silt Green.” The Moody Blooms palette pairs the leafy green with other colors straight out of the garden, such as “Red Dahlia,” “Pink Yarrow,” and “Goji Berry.”

“Depending on the season, there are several colors that pair well with this year’s Pantone Color of the Year,” says Kerry Howard of KMH Interiors in Atlanta, Ga. “I see a lot of citrus and turquoise accents at retail right now that work well with this bright green. I think it’s a great shade that can just about complement any color.”

“Green is definitely a sign of growth, and in spring it’s visually appealing to see our landscape come to life overnight,” says Howard.

Today’s popular botanical and tropical-patterned textiles make it easy to integrate shades of green and bring nature indoors. While wall color and textiles are two of the most direct applications for the shade, natural greenery works as well.

“I think one of the best ways to introduce green into a space is by adding live plants... says Howard. “It’s always fun to add a fiddle leaf fig tree to any room that has natural light. I even love introducing succulents in small doses—not only do they add a pop of green, they’re easy to take care of.”

While many business owners want to protect their intellectual property, the process can be confusing and overwhelming. Understanding what is protectable and the steps required to secure or enforce those rights is just the beginning. Incorporate international protection issues and matters become even more complex.

For expert advice on the topic, we interviewed High Point, N.C.-based attorney Cory Rayborn.

What is the difference between a copyright, trademark and patent?

Great question, because in my experience many people use these terms interchangeably—yet they’re really not at all the same. Copyrights are generally used to protect creative works such as artwork, designs, music and film. A trademark is typically a word or logo used to differentiate one supplier of goods or services from any other supplier. Patents are reserved for inventions or developments and are basically a government-granted monopoly to the rights associated with such invention for a specified period of time.

How does the process differ for securing each of these and how long do those rights last?

Is there such thing as global/ international protection for a design?

Copyrights are typically the easiest protection to secure. They require the least amount of originality and generally last 70-120 years (depending on a few factors). Copyright applications are relatively simple and cheap and can be filled out online without an attorney, so I typically recommend people do it themselves. The average cost of filing for a copyright online is $35.

Sadly, there is no such beast as an “international copyright.” There are means by which a trademark application can be made into a multi-territory application. Costs are higher for those than for a United States-only application and those applications do have additional wrinkles.

Trademarks are a little more complicated. Once successfully registered, trademarks can last in perpetuity as long as you continue using the mark within commerce and maintain the necessary filings (essentially something has to be filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office every five years).

They cost $1,500 - $2,000 on average for an initial Federal application, including both application and legal fees. Depending on client needs, state trademark protection is also available.

Patents are the most difficult to obtain and require the most originality in thought and process. It’s not uncommon for a given application to take years to work through the registration process. Obtaining a patent can be expensive—aggregate costs in excess of $10,000 are not uncommon. Design patents are more common for furniture than textiles, and more applicable to three-dimensional products than twodimensional ones. Patents last approximately 20 years and after that time they can be utilized by anyone with no royalty required.

Can fabric designs be protected? If so, how?

Fabric designs can be hard to protect unless they are truly original. To the degree that a design is distinctive and original, you can file a copyright application.

I’ve had many people ask me how different a pattern or design must be to be considered safe. The bar for what is considered original isn’t very high. You just need to be able to look at it and see the distinction.

My recommendation is to improve on the original— make it a better design or produce a higher-quality product. Create something that adds value to your brand.

How can a company determine if it’s worth it to protect a design?

Really, it all depends on how big a part of the business that product is or will become, the life-cycle of products within the business, business models, and other factors. If nothing else, a copyright application is always relatively affordable and can help carve out a bit of space for your unique product in the industry.

How can a company know if the pattern or product they’re buying from an international supplier is truly original?

Unfortunately, there’s no way to know for sure, and many companies don’t find out that what they have purchased isn’t original until some third party hits them with a copyright infringement claim. My best advice to protect yourself is to have as strong of a relationship as possible with your vendors. The degree to which they will work with you to make matters “right” if something like this occurs can sometimes be your best recourse. Further, only work with suppliers who stand behind their claims of originality. You can also carry good insurance that could step in to assist with copyright infringement claims.

What is public domain?

Public domain refers to intellectual property assets that are not protected by otherwise applicable laws, and can be used by anyone without royalty.

Most often, materials are considered public domain because either the time that they could be protected has expired or the concept was never originally protected in the first place.

How do I find an attorney that truly specializes in these areas?

As with choosing any attorney, I recommend asking for references and a discussion of their experience.

Many attorneys offer copyright and trademark services; patent lawyers are a recognized specialty with extra credentialing, and can be harder to find.

Uniquely positioned at the epicenter of the textile, leather and trimmings industries, the International Textile Alliance (ITA; formerly ITMA) is focused on providing resources and opportunities that promote industry advancement through education, awareness, advocacy and technology to its membership.

The association is comprised of mills, converters, distributors, agents, tanneries and trimming manufacturers that produce decorative coverings for the home furnishings and related industries.

Industry suppliers are also accepted under a supplier membership.

Members pay an annual fee that funds the association’s industry events and education programs. A primary membership benefit is that only ITA members are permitted to exhibit at the biannual Showtime Market—the one and only biannual trade show dedicated to the growth and success of the textile industries.

In December 2016, the association underwent a rebranding, including a new name, International Textile Alliance, chosen by its board for its ability to communicate the organization’s many benefits beyond Showtime Market, with which it is most closely associated.

“We’ve worked closely with our board and members to hone our mission and define our reason for being,” says Catherine Morsell, executive director of ITA. “The result of this exploration is our new name: International Textile Alliance. We chose it for its ability to represent our commitment to our members and the industry year-round. Following that model, we have renamed our biannual event the ITA Showtime Market, and our education program is now called the ITA Educational Foundation.”

The association’s educational foundation ensures the future of the textile industries through education, scholarship and career development initiatives.

Along with its new name, the ITA also has a new logo that reflects the organization’s rebranding. With modern colors and a refreshed design, it features the organization’s new tagline: Connections Happen Here. The logos for ITA Showtime Market and ITA Educational Foundation have also been updated to reflect the association’s new direction.

“The association has always been, and continues to be, dedicated to investing in the future of the textile, trimming, and leather industries,” adds Todd Nifong, president and COO of Al Fresco Functional Fabrics.

Founders’ Scholarship Emma Becker, a high school senior at Tiverton School District, was awarded the first ever Founders’ Scholarship during the ITA Awards Gala in December 2016. She is the daughter of Paula Becker, an employee with Regal Fabrics.

She will be studying Theatre and Education at the University of Rhode Island.

The Founders’ Scholarship was established in 2016 by the ITA Board of Directors, along with the Educational Foundation, to further education and our industry’s future. It’s made possible by the founding board members of the ITA. The Founders’ Scholarship is an annual scholarship set up as a benefit for members and their children, as well as children of parents who are employed by a member. The scholarship recipient receives $2,500 for each of their first two years of college.

Savannah College of Art & Design The inspiration for this repeat pattern comes from learning to let the nuances of nature and the process of creating show through in a design.

I created mono-prints by rolling ink onto various sprigs and leaves and pressing them to paper, and one set stood out with its organic yet defined shapes. I then scanned in the image, inverted and filled the color and began rearranging the sprig to showcase the natural beauty of the monoprint that would not have been reached solely by drawing. The assignment for my screen-printing class was to utilize only two colors for the design, so I also played around with stretching the values and dimension with a half-tone effect of two different sizes for both a shadow and lattice-work structural grid.
