from the President So what constitutes performance?

A triathlete friend of mine told me he had just purchased a new high performance racing bike.

I also had another friend go on and on about his new high performance sports car that he custom ordered with all the bells and whistles.

Since that exhausts the extent of the friends that I have, I also read an article about the new Boeing 737 Max jet that Southwest Airlines plans on using and how the performance characteristics of the new jet will be the future of commercial air travel.

Now, I am not completely familiar with all aspects of these three modes of transportation, but I am going to make a safe bet that the performance of the bike, sports car, and jet are not the same.

So what exactly is performance? A description? A level of quality? Or is it more about the capabilities?

In our world of textiles, leather, and trimming, buzz words like performance, functional, durable, cleanable, resistant, contract grade, and the uses of a plethora of different fibers and treatments for different applications have left the buyer as confused as a chameleon in a bag of skittles.

To help sort through the confusion, the ITMA membership committee is hard at work addressing the issue at hand. We have reached out to professionals in the industry, testing agencies, and are seeking the wisdom of our member companies to come up with a set of standards that all buyers can easily understand and immediately recognize during the process of considering a product to purchase. Some people may ask: Why? Because the ITMA is an association that takes pride in its efforts to promote their members, provide them with support in an ongoing process, not only during Showtime, but also throughout the year. So enjoy the article on page 12, and feel free to share your opinion with us, and your fellow members and buyers, your input is greatly appreciated.

We work diligently throughout the year to put on the best show possible, and the December 2016 edition is no exception. We have a full slate of educational opportunities, an updated registration process, and on Monday evening we will be holding the ITMA Awards Gala benefiting the Educational Foundation. If you did not attend the inaugural gala, you do not want to miss out on this year’s event.

The ITMA has planned an evening that will applaud our members, award the best and brightest in our industry, and announce initiatives that will change the course for a sustained and bright future of our association, and our industry as a whole.

Sophisticated Colors Meet Classic Design Following an amazing debut this summer, the Somerset Bay Collection by Abercrombie Textiles is appearing for its second season at Showtime. In June of 2016, Abercrombie Textiles teamed up with Somerset Bay to launch the collection and garnered an overwhelming response. This market, the company is introducing even more distinctive patterns and colorways.

Somerset Bay’s brand-DNA has always been about sophisticated colors paired with classic American design. The Abercrombie Textiles design team expanded on that identity by focusing on cotton constructions in a mixture of bright and natural colors. Textured stripes are featured throughout the collection and lend themselves to both casual and finely tailored furniture. The introductions create a palette of colors and patterns that embody a life well-lived.

Also big news at Abercrombie Textiles is the upcoming expansion of its wide-width fabric offerings. In early 2017 the company will launch its new wide-width finishing line, creating numerous possibilities for

applications in the hospitality and home furnishings markets.

While wide-width weaving capabilities—of up to 130 inches—have always distinguished the mill within the U.S., the company has only recently begun to finish wide fabrics in its own plant. Once the company opens the finishing line at its Cliffside, N.C. weaving plant, it will be able to offer turnkey solutions to its customers.

“We’ve been hearing the calls from the industry that they want someone to figure out how to weave and finish jacquard duvets and bedding in the U.S.,” says Chip Stroup, President of Residential Fabrics at Abercrombie. “Having our own finishing line is a huge step forward in logistics and cost-savings. We see tremendous growth opportunities for wide-weaving, particularly in hospitality bedding, drapery and napery.”

THE PEAK of PERFORMANCE How today’s hottest textiles are changing the face of the industry.

As the performance textile market grows and evolves, it creates both challenges and opportunities.

While it’s generating consumer appeal and growth for manufacturers and retailers, its progress also illuminates the lack of definition of the ‘performance’ designation within the home furnishings industry.

What Constitutes Performance?

Today’s definition of performance fabrics and leathers varies widely. At its broadest, a consumer might describe it as a material that’s stain-resistant or easy-to-clean. Yet within the industry, the term has a variety of meanings.

“Performance can be anything that makes a fabric easier to live with, use, or design with,” says Randy Rubin, chairman, The Crypton Companies. “Crypton® technology begins at the molecular level and makes fabrics moisture-, odor-, and stain-resistant. They repel and release stains easily including oil-based stains, and they stop odors from spreading.”

At Culp, performance fabrics utilize technology that combines performance fibers and yarns with chemistry encapsulations to provide moisture repellency and stain

resistance. “A performance fabric is one that passes all ATMA requirements, plus has a water repellency of 80 and a cleanability code of 4/5,” says Liam Waters, executive vice president of sales at Culp.

Performance fabrics at Prismatek must be stainresistant, antibacterial, breathable, oil-repellant, easyto-clean, and have high double-rubs, says Anke Kondek, president and owner. “In the past, performance fabric was notoriously rough and had a different texture than untreated fabrics; now you can’t even feel the difference.”

A recognized pioneer in the field, Sunbrella® has performance features developed to withstand difficult environments such as prolonged direct sunlight and saltwater exposure, says Greg Rosendale, market manager for residential furniture fabrics for Glen Raven.

“For the interiors market, performance isn’t worth discussing if the fabric isn’t comfortable or attractive.

Sunbrella’s design and performance brings the best combination to the marketplace,” he says.

At STI, the performance story has a different angle.

“Our Revolution Performance Fabrics are not only easy

to clean and very durable, but also free of PFC chemicals, constructed from upcycled fibers that are inherently stain-resistant and 100 percent made in the U.S.A.,” says Katherine Shoaf, director of design and merchandising at STI. In the leather segment, Conneaut Leathers Powered by Crypton offers leathers that are specially treated to have unique, stronger performance characteristics than similar untreated products, says Jack Prause, president of Conneaut Leather. “Our customers focus on three primary performance characteristics: stain-resistance, cleanability (stain-removal), and superior wear-resistance. Of course, the look and feel need to be similar to non-performance leather in order for the product to be useful or desirable.”

Design Matters Though technological advancements are at the forefront of this evolving category, aesthetics are equally important. Consumers must be attracted to a sofa or chair before they will stop to hear about the performance story of its cover.

“We also understand the tremendous value design brings to the equation,” says Rosendale of Glen Raven.

“In applications where end-users value comfort and aesthetics, the assurance of durability and cleanability becomes more attractive. We now have a combined team of over 30 designers who work with our R&D teams to bring our highly fade-resistant, easy care and bleach-cleanable technologies to upholstery fabrics without compromising luxury and softness.”

Designed specifically for interiors, Culp’s Livesmart performance fabrics are available in a wide variety of popular interior upholstery fabrics, including velvets, textures, chenilles, jacquards, prints, and PU constructions.

At STI, design is a priority. “We are constantly innovating our designs, from different constructions to developing yarns that are not currently in the marketplace,” says Shoaf.

location, says Kondek. “That said, they are designed with hospitality locations, manufacturers, and even families with kids and pets in mind.”

“For us, creating performance fabrics for the home that allow the use of natural fibers, including cotton and linen, as well as home fabrics in luxury textures such as suede, velvet, and leather are great breakthroughs,” says Crypton’s Rubin.

Game-Changing Innovation From durability and cleanability to technical innovation, the advanced solutions available from today’s performance textiles continue to evolve.

STI recently introduced its Revolution Plus Performance Fabrics that include all of the same qualities of its Revolution products, plus the added benefit of being machine-washable.

“Our most unique performance fabrics are Active Line and Aqua Clean,” says Kondek of Prismatek.

“Between their green treatment processes, natural texture, and pure cleaning processes, they are utilizing cutting-edge technology.”

“Performance can be anything that makes a fabric easier to live with, use, or design with,” says Rubin.

The longevity of the Sunbrella brand validates its technological capabilities. “The specific fiber formulations, color recipes, UV packages, and finishing technologies have been tested over time to ensure the best performance possible,” says Rosendale.

“Our fabrics stand up to indoor entities such as markers, crayons, salad dressing, soda, coffee, and so forth,” says Crypton’s Rubin. “They afford people the freedom to allow pets on the furniture without worry about odors and stains, and they hold up amazingly.

Our contract fabrics also have a barrier that prevents moisture from getting past the fabric into the furniture substrate or cushions.”

While the primary market for its leather with Crypton is residential furniture, Conneaut Leather has experienced a sharp uptick in demand from designers in hospitality and healthcare—where the ability to keep furniture sanitary by cleaning with bleach is valued tremendously.

Growth Potential With consumers and designers increasingly embracing ‘performance’ as a must-have characteristic for upholstered furnishings, textile features originally seen only in outdoor and commercial applications are now becoming standard.

“People are busier than ever. They are looking for anything that will make their lives a little easier,” says Shoaf of STI. Consumer awareness and desire for performance fabrics has lead to increasing demand for performance leathers as well. In addition to customers asking for the material, much of Conneaut Leather’s growth has come

from furniture companies who appreciate the flexibility of having a leather they can use on all their furniture, says Prause. Performance leathers are moving from a niche product to widely available in the colors and looks everyone wants, he adds. This year the company has launched three new performance leather lines that come standard with Crypton.

“Performance fabrics have come of age,” says Waters of Culp. “It has become very obvious that the consumer now demands performance. As the leading supplier of upholstery fabric in the U.S. today, Culp believes it fulfills this demand at a value never seen before in the true performance category.”

As consumers learn more about the advantages and availability of performance fabrics, they’ll likely become as prevalent in home furnishings as they are in athletic apparel.

“Now that performance fabrics are visually and in a tactile way indistinguishable from ordinary fabrics, people who know about them no longer want to settle for non-performance,” says Rubin of Crypton.

“Performance is no longer an added benefit; rather, it has become essential in designing interiors for the way people live. For young families, pet owners and people who entertain at home, it is crucial. In the contract market, it is required. We see the future market share for performance growing to eclipse that of non-performance goods. Once the public at large is educated in the technical, sustainability, and aesthetic advances in performance for home textiles, they won’t want to purchase fabrics unless they have performance characteristics.”

Mary Catherine’s Sources of inspiration: My travels abroad are main influencers in my designs, especially Asia.

I also get inspired by fashion, architecture and even periods in time – I adore the Roaring 20’s.

Colors or color combinations: Drawing on her traditional Southern roots, Mary Catherine Folmar folds in exotic Asian themes to create designs for living. Throughout her career, Folmar has woven the traditional and the unexpected together to achieve her own signature look. Her inspiration comes from travel across Europe, Asia and the U.S. Folmar is a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Industrial Design; her inspirations are fashion, architecture and eras like the Roaring 20s.

A big step for Folmar came in 2012 when she introduced Cotton & Quill, a hand-illustrated collection of home textiles, wall coverings and trimmings. Her offerings are featured in 27 stores throughout the U.S. and the Dominican Republic.

In 2016, she opened the Cotton & Quill flagship store in Mountain Brook, Ala. Through this store, Folmar is able to work one-on-one with interior designers and their clients to craft rooms with vivid colors, unique patterns and refreshing style.

I love mixing blues and greens, especially navy and turquoise hues… I’ve even been known to throw in pops of melon and orchid.

Dana Gibson

Dana’s Sources of inspiration: Movies, art, historical references like textiles or decorating books and fashion.

Colors or color combinations: I like two tones of the same color – turquoise and periwinkle. Jade green and lime. Using the cool and hot versions of the same color is unexpected and can be seismic.

Dana Gibson has spent 20 years molding her style and refining her eye. She started out by creating her own line of handcrafted porcelainware. As major retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Saks picked up her line, she turned her hand to other kinds of home furnishings, including decorative accessories, fine prints, furniture, fabric, trimmings and wallpaper.

As demand for her inimitable style grew, Gibson licensed her designs to companies like Stroheim, The MT Company, Soicher Marin and Caspari.

Although she likes the hustle and bustle of city life, inspiration for many floral and pastoral themes springs from a love of country life. All of these influences can be seen in her vivid brushstrokes, with classical motifs played out in bold colors. Through her work, she has been able to transform countless homes with her unique combination of blended themes and unmatched style.

Room in your home: My bedroom. It’s light, bright and airy with painted floors and oversized windows.

Quote/words of wisdom: “Beauty will save the world” by Dostoevsky. This not only validates what I do, it’s what I believe.

Snack: Greek Yogurt.

Project or collaboration: Designing fabric and trimmings for Stroheim has been a lot of fun.

My color palette and love for large-scale pattern and global design has come to life in a new fabric collection and soon to be offered wovens.

Books (business or pleasure): I read a biography of Edie Sedgewick in my twenties. Reading about famous people like Winston Churchill and Andre Agassi fascinates me.

Vacation destination: Pawley’s Island used to be our favorite spot to vacation because of how untouched it is. We now have a humble cottage on the Rappahannock River and it’s a pretty nice place to relax.

Things to do when you’re not working: Taking walks, hot yoga, shopping and reading.

Despite a diminishing skilled labor force industry-wide, window treatments—like these designed by designer Tobi Fairley—continue to be a key element in well-designed rooms.

Like many parts of the home furnishings industry, the window coverings segment is experiencing a decline in skilled labor. As its current workforce ages, fewer and fewer young workers are pursuing training or entering the field.

“Who’s going to keep these businesses alive?” asks Sandra VanSickel, national treasurer of the Window Covering Association of America (WCAA). “We’re not effectively bringing the youth into the industry. We need to be asking ourselves: ‘How do they find us?’ and ‘How do they get the necessary training?’”

As owner of a custom window treatment fabrication business, Sew What’s New, in Apex, N.C., VanSickel has personally experienced the lack of skilled labor. “It’s hard to find industrial machinists, and people who can operate and repair industrial sewing machines,” she says.

Now that once-standard classes such as home economics and woodshop are no longer a staple in the public school curriculum, students have limited exposure to these types of industry and career opportunities. Most of today’s workroom employees have a family member who was in the trade or had some type of first-hand exposure to it, explains VanSickel. “We need to raise awareness of the field and its opportunities.”

A Model Program When several of today’s leading furniture manufacturers identified skilled labor shortages in their area, they turned to Catawba Valley Community College for assistance. “It’s a continuing education program designed to train a younger workforce,” says Mary Reynolds, public information officer for Catawba Valley Community College. In partnership with Century Furniture, Lee Industries, Lexington Home Brands, Sherrill Furniture, and Vanguard Furniture, the college developed its now highly regarded Catawba Valley Furniture Academy.

“Our mission is to serve the needs of our community and its industries,” says Reynolds. “These companies came to us and said, ‘We need these PHOTO CREDIT: people and we need them Catawba Valley Furniture Academy to come work for us.’” The college responded by developing an industry-driven training program designed to prepare students for skilled positions that are currently in high demand.

The Furniture Academy offers a series of classes such as pattern making, manual cutting, automated cutting, sewing, and upholstery. The program also helps students explore specific career paths by providing plant tours, career previews, and assessments to help them identify their best career options. And it has a simulated furniture manufacturing facility that provides hands-on training opportunities.

Launched in 2014, the Catawba Valley Furniture Academy has been extremely successful, with a 100 percent job placement record, says Reynolds. Based on it success, a second program—the Alexander Country Furniture Academy—was launched in summer of 2016.

Nurturing Future Generations In an effort to find and recruit young talent for all areas of the textile industry, ITMA offers an internship program designed to let students see and experience a variety of industry-related careers first-hand. Led by its Educational Foundation, a committee of leaders throughout the industry, the internship program pairs students with ITMA member company sponsors.

Most internships are paid eight-week positions, although other opportunities can be available.

Financial assistance may be available through the ITMA Educational Foundation for sponsor companies, including $2,000 salary per intern and an additional $2,000 travel and housing stipend. Internships are open to upperclassmen and graduate students who have declared a major in textile design.

An Interior Designers’ Perspective While the workforce is diminishing, the need for high-quality window coverings is not. They continue to be a key component in today’s design plans. “I honestly don’t think a room is complete without window treatments,” says Tobi Fairley, of Arkansas-based Tobi Fairley Interior TOBI FAIRLEY Design. “They add a warmth and coziness to a room, and they really finish the design. I would say they are one of my signature design elements.”

For many, the value of the designerworkroom relationship goes beyond just that of a typical client and vendor. Window treatment fabricators and workrooms are an integral part of a designer’s business. “I have a person that I contract with to do all of my window treatments,” says Fairley. “He knows me so well that he is always one step ahead of what I want or need in a project. He’s so critical to my business that I joke that I would fire myself before I would fire him!

And I’m actually not joking.”

Looking ahead to small parcel shipping in 2017, many companies will be facing challenging—and costly—new rate calculations. Although an annual General Rate Increase (GRI) from UPS and FedEx is typical, an analysis of this year’s increases reveals unusual changes. These new charges and calculations apply to all shippers, even those under contract, and could have a major impact on transportation and logistics budgets.

What’s Unusual for 2017?

There are a number of notably unusual elements of the 2017 rate increase for both carriers. First, the changes were announced earlier than usual. The UPS rate increase also goes into effect earlier than normal—on December 26, 2016—while FedEx’s increases begin January 2, 2017.

Another notable change is that the rate increases vary significantly between carriers. Rate increases in past years were almost identical, yet this year there are key differences between the two carriers— most notably in DIM charge calculations and with residential packages.

When is 4.9% not 4.9%?

Accessorial Charges Both carriers have increased multiple accessorial charges. A few examples from UPS include: The Residential Surcharge for UPS Ground Services will increase $0.15 (4.6 percent) to $3.40; the Residential Surcharge for UPS Air Services will increase $0.35 (9.6 percent) to $4.00; the Additional Handling charge will increase $0.35 (3.3 percent) to $10.85; and effective January 8, 2017, an Additional Handling Surcharge will apply to UPS SurePost packages.

The published rate increase for both UPS and FedEx for 2017 is 4.9 percent (for FedEx ground and home delivery), and 3.9 percent (for air and international). Many shippers assume adding 4.9 percent to their 2016 shipping spend will accurately predict their 2017 expense. Unfortunately, this is typically an underestimation. The rate increase is non-linear; it isn’t a flat 4.9 percent increase across all weights, zones and service levels. Rates for many zone and weight combinations will increase significantly more than 4.9 percent.

FedEx DIM Changes FedEx has introduced a new change to its DIM Weight calculation. It has reduced its DIM Divisor from 166 to 139—increasing the billable weight on all DIM-weighted packages. The new calculation results in a higher billed weight, which will fall into the newly increased ground rate chart, effectively hitting DIM-weighted packages

Defending the Bottom Line

There are several tactics for managing these impending increases. Carrier audits, contract renegotiations, packaging practice reviews and supply chain analysis can all yield savings. A professional, comprehensive contract review and negotiation is also important for mitigating carrier increases. These carriers employ trained and knowledgeable pricing professionals to construct and negotiate contracts on their behalf, and shippers should employ the same tools in their defense.

A free shuttle ride takes you to the buildings, and then it’s easy to walk between the HFRC (formerly the Fabric Center) – shown above –, RC, and surrounding venues.
