Follow these steps for the ultimate benefit of this NEW Product ... STEP 1 ... Glue the leg with Sullivan’s Prime Time or Tail Adhesive STEP 2 ... Spray on White Powder’Ful (shake well) to build-up leg and thicken the hair follicles. It also provides a brighter visual for clipping. STEP 3 ... Use Powder’Ful to build your leg alternating it with small amounts of Tail Adhesive. If you are building a black leg use Black Powder’Ful. This will allow for better coverage when you paint. STEP 4 ... Once you are done building the leg with Powder’Ful, the final step is to completely cover the leg with Black Finisher for a natural black look. Powder’Ful also works excellent on the tail heads and building loins & bellies.

Fresh & Feminine

TM

“The secret to eye appealing show cattle!”

This exciting new product has been is proven with results and the demand for repeat orders has been tremendous. In fact, many of the major steer and heifer show winners from this fall have feed FRESH & FEMININE™, the secret to eye appealing show cattle!” Feminine shape and freshness throughout the front end of your show animal spells ultimate success or failure in the show ring today. FRESH & FEMININE™ is not just another supplement. Tried and true for many years, FRESH & FEMININE™ has been the secret, fed at Sullivan Farms for over 10 years. It has been an integral part of their feeding regiment and credited with producing outstanding freshness and ultimate show ring success of their cattle at major shows year-in and year-out. This is how this feed supplement works … the superior science of FRESH & FEMININE™ features a combination of strategic vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and a high concentration of by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fat burning in the body that targets spe- cific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. The animal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, high energy show cattle diets. All natural and fertility safe for open heifers, bred heifers, steers and bulls. Simply top dress 6 oz. per head per day of this pelleted supplement on your current ration until desired freshness has been achieved.

Sullivan’s

“The simple science to freshen-up a front end while maintaining the body capacity desired. We have had tremendous success with Fresh & Feminine™ for over 10 years. Now available to the public for the first time. You will noticeably see the results.”

Hair Dye

Leaves the hair with more body and an incredible, brilliant black shine. Proven safe. No hair burn. Black Velvet is designed specifically for cattle hair. Black Velvet hair dye turns grey, red-tinted or faded hair into a beautiful jet-black color. Black Velvet infuses the hair with more softness, body and incredible shine. Very easy to use. Apply at home to clean, dry hair. You will need three to four kits of Black Velvet for a 1,000 pound animal. Simply combine the entire contents of the Dye (black bottle) and Activator (red bottle) into a spray bottle or blower fogger, shake well and apply liberally onto hair coat. Gently work into hair coat with a Smart Comb. Leave the dye in the hair for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse out with water until the water runs clear. Will not towel off. For long lasting beauty and color, Black Velvet is truly brilliant.

WASHING & RINSING CATTLE DURING WINTER MONTHS A dilemma many of us face during winter months is whether or not to wash or rinse our calves. Is it okay to wash when it it's cold out? How cold is too cold? To make a long story short, it comes down to using your best judgment and common sense based on your calf, the washing setup you have at home (warm vs. cold water), the washing environment (indoor vs. outdoor), etc. However, here are a few tips we use at our house:

When in doubt, blow them out.

• We typically wash our calves only once a week in the heated wash rack. We don't like to wash too much because it can dry out the hide and hair due to the lower humidity and cooler temps. • The weather pattern can affect your rinsing/ washing schedule since temps can fluctuate drastically in the winter.

• Rinsing/washing can open the door for sickness, so be sure your calf is bone dry before turning it out. • Cattle will get lots cleaner in winter months if you use warm water. Cattle produce a natural protectant in the winter months that builds up over time. You will be able to see it on your combs. Warm water helps break down the

dirt and grime from the buildup while also helping the shampoo perform better. • If you don't have heated wash racks or warm water, a good temperature gauge is 45°. At 45° and below, you are much better off simply blowing them out to get rid of some of the dirt. • Use conditioning products like a ProCharge/ProPolish mixture to keep the hide and hair soft. • If you prefer aerosols, blow in products like ProPink or ProGloss to

condition and protect the hide and hair. • We like to use ProConditioner after any kind of washing because it is light and silky yet substantial enough to nourish the hide. • Remember to store all liquids and aerosols in a heated tack room or space to prevent the products from freezing. • Make sure there is ample bedding for your calves during colder months to keep them cleaner, warmer and help with overall maintenance. • Again, always remember, when in doubt, blow them out.

DREAM BIG

PERFORMANCES, CATTLE SHOWS & GOD GIVEN TALENTS BY CAITLYN OSCHNER, CO

Caitlyn Oschner performing the National Anthem at the 2014 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, NV.

I

t all started the summer of 2011 at the Limousin Junior Nationals in Amarillo, Texas. The Colorado Limousin Association was responsible for planning the Opening Ceremonies, and I had been invited to sing the National Anthem to kick it all off. Until then, I had only sung at Cowboy Churches and local rodeos. Although I was very excited for the opportunity, it still felt like a pretty daunting task. After making the extremely long and hot drive to Texas, with a trailer full of cattle just a few days before, the evening of Opening Ceremonies had finally arrived. Just about an hour before opening ceremonies would start, I had the chance to rehearse on the stage in the arena. Unfortunately, my practice run didn’t go as well as planned and I walked away feeling completely defeated. It sounded terrible! All of that time I had spent practicing seemed to have just gone to waste. I was so frustrated! As I walked out of the arena and into the corridor around the arena, tears came rolling down

my cheeks. At this point, that negative voice inside my head seemed to be attacking me from all angles. “Caitlyn, what kind of National Anthem was that? That was horrible! What if you completely mess up tonight? What if you forget the words? How will you be able to sing in front of all those people?” After listening to that voice, I started to believe all the lies I was being told. . . But then, in the distance, and in the midst of all that negativity, I heard that still, small voice in my heart. “My child,” The voice said. “Why are you so afraid? Why is your heart so troubled? I am the Giver of all gifts, and I have given you this gift so that you can touch the hearts of others. Try it again. I believe in you.” After hearing this, I took a breath, wiped the tears from my eyes, and started practicing again. As I was about half way through practicing the National Anthem, I heard feet coming down the stairs in front of me. The footsteps stopped when they heard I was singing, and stood completely still until I had finished.

As I turned around, I saw two ladies walking down the stairs telling me how beautiful I had just sang. They told me they were custodians at the fairgrounds and were just upstairs making their rounds cleaning, before they left for the day. I told them how nervous I was to sing the National Anthem that night, and how discouraged I was with the way my practice had gone. I asked them to say a prayer for me that night, and both of them said they would. Then they gave me a hug and walked out of the door. Just as I was about ready to head the other way to continue practicing, I heard the door open once again. One of the ladies had come back inside, walked up to me, looked me straight in the eye and said, “Baby girl, just remember. . . You can do ALL things through Christ who gives you strength.” At that moment, I knew I could do it. The performance went better than I ever imagined and I received many kind compliments and encouragement from my Limousin family.

“Wow! Baby girl, that was amazing!”

Since that life-changing experience, I

“Caitlyn’s favorite show moment is depicted in the picture with Ashlyn. It was very special that the girls were showing together with a cow/calf pair (that was Ashlyn’s favorite cow) when they won Supreme Breeding Female at the 2013 Nebraska State Fair. I love the emotion that Show Champions captured that night.” - Julie Oschner (Caitlyn’s Mother)

have been extremely blessed with numerous opportunities that have helped shaped me as a young person. Although the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas feels like a world away from Kersey, Colorado where cattle outnumber people, I realize all my experiences growing up in the cattle industry and rural America have prepared me for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the National Finals Rodeo. Growing up on my family’s registered Limousin and Lim-Flex cow/ calf operation and having an opportunity to show cattle at local, state, and national shows, has helped me develop a strong work ethic and a dedication to persevering through challenges to achieve a goal. As an active 4-H and FFA member, I have participated on the Weld County Livestock Judging Team for 7 years and had the opportunity to compete in the National FFA Creed Speaking Contest. Little did I know that all the hours I have spent giving oral reasons and preparing for the National FFA Creed Speaking Contest would give me the confidence to stand in front of an audience and sing and prepare me to answer questions during radio and newspaper interviews following my performance at the National Finals Rodeo. Undoubtedly, the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas was an experience I won’t soon forget. Ever since I was a

little girl, I have dreamed of singing at the NFR. No words can begin to describe the Patriotism I felt as I walked out onto a red carpet into an arena being lit in red, white, and blue with a horse and rider walking out into the spotlight carrying our Nation’s flag. What an honor it was to sing the Anthem in an arena full of rodeo fans and professional cowboys that embody the values our country was founded upon! I sincerely thank all of our friends, many of whom are in the cattle industry, who have encouraged me along the way and given me opportunities to develop and use my God-given talents. As I look to the future, I hope to pursue an occupation that allows me to combine my Christian faith, agricultural upbringing, and love of music. Following High School Graduation next year, I am considering attending Belmont Christian University in Nashville, TN to study music. I feel very blessed to have grown up in the cattle industry, and I hope that I can continue to be an advocate for agriculture and a spokesperson for the industry we all love! If there’s one thing I’ve learned so far on my journey, it is that no matter how big your dreams are, with hard work, determination, and Faith guiding your footsteps, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! ▪

Rex and Jody Buck own and operate their family cattle ranch on the Colorado/Nebraska border east of Wray CO. They are each 4th generation cattle ranchers. Both are graduates of Colorado State University and are involved in their Wray Cattle and Ranch companies, investments, and real estate. They have four kids - Brady a graduate of Duke and now at Magnum Feedyard; Molly a CSU graduate working for Land Energy Partners, Coby a junior at Harvard, and Baylor a freshman at Oklahoma State University. The Bucks have shown cattle throughout the country and extensively in Colorado.

WRAY CATTLE CO.

CHEESEBURGER SOUP INGREDIENTS

1/2 pound ground beef 3/4 cup chopped onions 3/4 cup shredded carrots 3/4 diced celery 1 tsp dried basil 1 tsp dried parsley flakes 4 T butter or margarine - divided 3 cups chicken broth 1/2 salsa 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 12 or so oz. cubed processed American cheese (I use Velveeta) 1 - 1 1/2 cups milk 3/4 tsp salt 1/4-1/2 tsp pepper 1/4-1/2 tsp red pepper flakes or to taste 1/4-1/2 tsp lemon pepper or to taste dash of Tabasco 1/4 cup Sour Cream

DIRECTIONS

In a saucepan, brown the beef; drain and set aside. In the same saucepan, saute the onion, carrots, celery, basil, and parsley until vegetables are slightly tender in 1 T of butter or margarine - about 10 minutes. Place vegetable mixture in soup pot. Add broth, salsa, and beef; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes. Meanwhile in a small skillet, melt remaining butter. Whisk in flour forming a paste. Cook and stir for 3-5 minutes or until bubbly. Gradually whisk into soup; bring soup to boil.

Cook and stir for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low then add cheese, milk, and remaining seasonings. Cook and stir until cheese melts. Remove from heat; blend in sour cream. Serve with tortilla chips. Variations - You can add as much or as little salsa and Tabasco as you desire. You can also add 4 cups diced, peeled potatoes with the broth and beef. Just make sure you simmer mixture long enough to cook potatoes.

JOE EPPERLY

WE ASKED JOE TO FILL IN THE BLANKS. BY JOE EPPERLY

1. I would never... own a hog. I’ve worked with about every species imaginable (cattle to emus to llamas) and I just can’t stand pigs. It goes back to being bitten by one in my family’s livestock market when I was 12. I’ve been trying to rid the world of them since…one bacon strip at a time. 2. I wish I were better at... making small talk. If I’ve got something to say or ask you about, I can talk for hours. With new people, I can tend to be pretty nervous and awkward. It’s something I try to work on every day. 3. My favorite show is... National Western Stock Show. It is the granddaddy of them all for a reason. From the “yards” to the “hill”, it’s an atmosphere unlike any other. The whole cattle industry converged into one location for 14 days is truly something special. 4. My favorite hobby is... golf. I play around 3-4 times a week when I’m in Denver and the weather is good (300 days of sunshine!). Two things are always in the back of my

SUV, my clipper bag and my golf clubs. 5. I always make sure I... take time to step back and look at the big picture. Whether it’s clipping stock, dealing with people or my day-to-day breed association work, a step back to evaluate things from a different perspective always helps. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, be it a judge, our friend or a computer programmer, gives insight into what they want or need and can help you make a decision accordingly. 6. My biggest fear is... sharks. I can’t get into the ocean past my knees without hearing the theme music from Jaws. 7. I never go to a show without... scrotal tape. It’s my job to measure scrotal circumference on all the Limousin bulls at the major shows throughout the year so I’ve always got a tape with me. The Limousin junior board actually made me a special “Scrotal Man” cape to wear at shows because of this habit.

fill in the blanks

8. My perfect day is... announcing a cattle show in the morning (you don’t have to wake up as early as exhibitors that way), playing a round of golf in the afternoon, and finding a good steak at the end of the day. 9. My favorite sports team is... the Virginia Tech Hokies football team. Though we have had an up and down couple of years, it’s my alma mater as well as my parent’s alma mater. I’ve been bleeding orange and maroon since I was knee high to a grasshopper and that won’t change. 10. I would love to travel to... Australia. I’ve traveled most of North America (46 states, 2 Canadian provinces and 1 Mexican state) and went to Argentina this fall, but Australia still tops the list. Ever since I saw the Man from Snowy River as a kid I’ve always wanted to go. I’ve just got to figure out if there’s a way to bring a koala bear back when I go. 11. If I could judge one show it'd be... the Open Angus show at NAILE or any show at Louisville for that matter. Growing up in the Angus breed, that was the pinnacle show and there is nothing like coming down that tunnel and walking on the green shavings. Sorting the stock in that ring would be a pinnacle to my career. 12. The easiest way to make me angry is... sit around and watch someone do

your work. I just despise laziness, especially at a cattle show. Sitting around and letting cattle lay in manure at a show was treated as close to a hanging offense in my family. So when I see someone just waiting for someone else to do their work or ordering someone to do something that’s their responsibility, I just see red. 13. My favorite song is... Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show (the Darius Rucker version doesn’t count). It’s a great two stepping sound that talks about home since I was born in Raleigh and grew up near Roanoke. 14. My greatest accomplishment is... hopefully still to come. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be an FFA chapter president, State FFA Officer, National Junior Angus Association Director, Beef Improvement Federation Board Member and now the International Limousin Council, but the real accomplishment has come from the people that I’ve been able to be around. The great and talented people whose lives I’ve been able to be a small part of is what has meant the most to me. 15. If I could meet one person it would be... the person God wants me to be.

My how time flies! The National Western Stock Show in Denver is here! Needless to say, I can’t wait to get to the Mile High City and see some old friends and catch up on things that have happened in the last couple of months. And wouldn’t you know it, I gotta eat while I’m there. I have to thank the Reid family for giving me the opportunity to share some of my favorite places to dine at while on the road. With that said, I would also like to let you know that I’m always open to suggestions from the rest of the stock show crowd about where you like to dine while on the road - so please feel free to share them with me. I’m starting off this time with a local Mexican food favorite of the Reid’s that Betty shared with me a couple of years ago. “El Jardin” is an authentic Mexican food restaurant just down the road in Commerce City that is well worth the drive. The food is awesome. From the tacos to the fajitas this place is the whole enchilada!! The quantities and pricing make this a place you can take the family or a group of stock show kids to enjoy a great meal.

Next up is close to being my favorite in Denver - “Cinzetti’s Italian Market Restaurant.” The menu here is so diversified I really don’t know how to explain it! There is an Italian side featuring pastas, pizzas, soups and salads; and also American items on the menu such as fish, chicken, fried potatoes and last, but not least, the dessert bar with hot cobblers and ice cream. I did save the best for last - the fresh made while you wait crepe station!! The selection is out of this world! It is all in a buffet type setting so you serve yourself and get as much as what you like as you want!! This is the stock show family’s dream come true there is something for everybody at this place!

I may have saved the best for the last - “Texas De Brazil.” There is nothing like going out to eat after a long hard day at the show and finding a place like this. There are eight different cuts of meat - yes I said 8 cuts of meat brought to your table on a skewer for you to select from. If you can’t find what you like out of those then I’d say you’re just too hard to please! There is also a soup and salad bar that I have not been able to match anywhere. The quality of service and food is hard to beat; so you better bring a healthy appetite and maybe a little extra cash if you bring the whole crew here - but man is it ever good!!!

"I don't have words to describe it. I guess it's an emotional deal for us, for what went on in South Dakota this Spring. We are so happy to be here in honor of Nick. The calf came from Nick, and that was the calf he picked for Bayley after Denver last year. Bayley truly believed that she won because of Nick." 1 HEIFER, 2 SHOWS

KENNEDY ACCOMPLISHES THE RARE FEAT OF WINNING SUPREME CHAMPION FEMALE AT 2 NATIONAL SHOWS! BY KENNEDY CORE, PLEASANTVILLE, IA

After graduating next spring I plan to attend Iowa State University in the fall, and major in Ag Communications with a minor in event management.

y name is Kennedy Core I am 18 years old and live in Pleasantville, Iowa. My parents are Mark and Deb Core and I have one sister Bailey. I currently go to Pleasantville High School where I am involved in volleyball, basketball, track, speech and drama, National Honor Society, FFA, student council and other various clubs and organizations.

When Lisa asked me to write how I felt after I won the American Royal and NAILE, I wasn't quite sure how I was going to be able to put it into words. Winning one of these shows let alone two was something my family has always dreamed of doing. After being selected supreme female at The American Royal my family and I were over joyed and filled with many emotions. Winning one of the “majors” is something we had never done before. After that day I thought my year with my heifer “Emily” could not get any better. Little did I know… It was about to get even better

than I ever could imagined. After winning the Sim Angus/Sim Solution show in Louisville I was just more than excited to be able to show in the Supreme Drive in Freedom Hall. For any cattle kid, it does not get much better. It was about 10:30 at night when we finally walked down the ramp onto the green shavings. I said my prayer, wrote my lucky number 14 into the dirt, and headed into the ring. Just about 20 minutes later, I received “the handshake.” I immediately broke down into tears. I couldn’t believe it. I had always thought this was something I would just

dream of doing. But on that night, it became reality. To explain how I felt in one word all I can say is blessed. The good Lord above blessed my family with these moments that we can’t even begin to explain how thankful we are for. Even though I was the one lucky enough to be on the halter there are many people who helped make this possible. First off, Jared Boyert for all the clipping and fitting you have done on her, you rock and I wouldn’t want anyone else to do it. To Tim, Emily, and the whole Schaeffer crew, I can’t thank you guys enough for your help and

support. And finally to my family, even though I was the one on the halter I can’t thank you guys enough for absolutely everything. We live this crazy dream together and if it wasn’t for them I would have never got to experience these moments. One last thing, to all those kids out there if there is one thing I can tell you, it would be to always DREAM BIG. With hard work, dedication, family, and most importantly faith anything is possible. Dreams do come true. Always believe that. ▪

TIM SHARES HIS THOUGHTS ON WHAT WINNING THE AMERICAN ROYAL AND THE NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL LIVESTOCK EXPO MEANT TO HIM. S&S SELENA I-80 X S&S MS SMARTY PANTS K1 BY TIM SCHAEFFER, IN

T

o sum up emotionally how winning Supreme Champion Female at both the American Royal and the NAILE felt to our family would be like winning the Daytona 500 or the Super Bowl. I grew up on a horse farm until I was 14, and at that time purchased my first heifer. Now, 16 years later at the age of 30, being able to raise a heifer to accomplish that means more than probably anything I have done in this business. At the age of 15, my dad Paul purchased what would be Selena’s grandmother “WAR O'Fancy Pants.” In our first two years of showing she was selected Champion Simmental at the

American Royal. Her first calf born was “S&S Ms Smarty Pants K1.” She was basically my first show heifer we had raised and was a division winner at Louisville herself both years. To bring a daughter back to Louisville, having raised her, and claim to me what is the biggest show was phenomenal; and then on top of that to have raised her dam felt like an even bigger accomplishment. From 15 on, the only thing I wanted to do or focus on was showing and raising cattle. Eight years ago I took a big risk, at a time in our lives that was pretty shaky for our family, and started Schaeffer Show Cattle. Although there were some real low spots, with the help of my family, friends and some very good help,

AMERICAN ROYAL our business grew and has become very successful. I owe most of the success to some very good old cows that where the backbone of our operation. To see them still be able to get it done, like K1, was another highlight of those two victories. I stress in our program that 1: you have to have good cattle genetically and phenotypically. 2: you have to treat people well and take care of your customers 3: you have to have a little luck and, lastly 4: it is your family that got you there and you need to enjoy it with them. To sum up everything I build my business around is to take care of my family, be able to work with them and do what I love while still being able to make a good income, and then in the end being able to be competitive in the show ring. The first time I walked down the ramp at Louisville to the green shavings and the organ playing was with Fancy Pants, Selena’s grandmother. I knew right then and there that that was "the show" I wanted to win. I have been fortunate with this win and prior, but I remember and tell others "When you get one of those banners - be humble and cherish it. You never know if you will get another one, because it’s tough and there are so many talented people and great cattle" To be able to win both those shows with one out of my old show heifer, in a business where I give it my all,

and to do it with my wife Emily, my son Braylen and my mom and dad Paul and Tracy who have supported me and worked right beside me the whole time was incredible. In addition to this, the family support and teamwork with the Core Family was second to none. The way they all work together and have their own parts to the team is truly admirable. I would have never had the opportunity to write this if that heifer was not in there barn. Then comes the luck. At the time my son was born I was actually selling “S&S Ms Smarty Pants K1” eggs in my embryo sale. A good friend Jake Hege purchased the eggs and chose to put them in at my place. We only stuck one. That one went on to be the heifer that I sold for Hege in our fall pasture sale to Mark and Deb Core. So to this date (obviously many full sibs on the way this spring), that is the only I-80 x K1 in existence. All of this put together is a moment I will never forget. I am very fortunate and humbled at the same time, because it took a lot to get where it ended up. I would like to put a big thanks to my wife Emily and son Braylen, my mom and dad Tracy and Paul Schaeffer, and the entire Core family, Mark, Deb, Bailey and Kennedy. Also, without the help of Ian Mckenzie, Nate Tice, Jared Boyert, and everyone else along the way, none of this would have been possible. ▪

GRAND WETHER SELLS FOR $12,000 BY KATHERINE LOOMIS, NAILE WRITER

he Sale of Champions at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) featured a Grand Champion Wether owned by Alexandra Raute, age 16, from Carmel, IN. Alexandra has shown for 5 years. This is her first win that has gone to the big sale, but not the first in her family. Her sister, Samantha Raute, has won Grand Champion or Reserve Champion Wether for the past 4 years. Alexandra hopes the youngest Raute sister will follow in the family footsteps of raising and showing champions. Success was earned through a good deal of hard work. Her family actually does not live on the farm where their sheep are raised. Instead, they commute 45 minutes to the barn 2-4 days a week and spend up to 9 hours each day preparing to show. While the road to success was not the easiest, Alexandra believes it was worth every

second and every ounce of effort. She aspires to continue showing and winning. Alexandra Raute and her family not only show excellent sheep, they are also top notch showmen. Practicing good showmanship is as high a priority as is raising good quality lambs. Alexandra says some important things to keep in mind when showing are that not everything goes to plan and how you practice in the barn is going to be very different in the show ring. Some advice she has

to any aspiring sheep exhibitor is to “put in the effort and try to have fun”. The Grand Champion Wether was a Hampshire sheep that sold for $12,000. Buyers included Crown Plaza & Galt House Hotels, Mike and Carol Hancock, Ketcham’s Sheep Equipment, Willoughby Sales, and the Agribusiness Industry Network. MAKING DREAMS A REALITY GRAND CHAMPION STEER

BY KAYLA MORROW, NEVADA, MO

I

got started showing livestock from my dad’s (Kevin Morrow) love and passion for the show industry. He had a great eye in picking out quality livestock for me to exhibit and the passion just stuck with me from there. First we exhibited locally at the county fair and Ozark Empire Fair and as we got more involved with showing we started competing at bigger shows. In 2009, we bought our first show steer from Goretska Show Steers. It’s been a dream and a goal of mine to win the Badger Kickoff Classic from the first time we exhibited steers there. The show and competition is second to none. The numbers are big and the competition is deep. Many great cattle are exhibited there that go on to have a very successful show season. It is a first class ran show and I give many thanks to the show committee that put on such a successful and great show each year. Winning that show meant everything to me. It was a feeling

that was indescribable I can’t put into words all the emotions and feelings I was going thru when I got the slap from judge Jack Ward for Grand Champion Market Animal. Without the love and support of my dad Kevin none of this would be possible. I couldn’t thank him enough for what he has done for me. Also this would never be a possibility without the help, support, teaching, learning and intensity from Tracy, Jake, Tyler, Chad and everyone else that is associated with Goretska Show Steers. I couldn’t ask for a better team on show day and throughout the year making my steers look the best they possibly can. Steer sire is a Heatwave out of a kryptonite cow that was raised by Chad Thompson. Brad Otto purchased it from his pasture sale and then resold it to Tracy Goretska. We are going to show him this winter and spring at numerous shows in the Midwest. Hopefully he feeds into a great fat steer that we can take to a major show next winter.

WORKING HERSELF UP THE RANKS GRAND CHAMPION HEIFER

I

BY STERLING REICHENBACH

’m 18 years old and I’m from Bath, Michigan. I’m a first generation cattle woman. Neither my parents grew up around livestock. What started as a hobby soon turned into a lifestyle when I decided to show Angus and Shorthorn cattle at the age of eleven. With going to college six hours away at Black Hawk College, it’s hard managing show cattle at

home. I’m beyond thankful for the team at Circle N and the Nowatzke family for all they’ve done to help me. Three hours is a long drive every weekend, but being able to work on my heifers and alongside one of the best herdsman in the country is unbeatable. ▪

A FAMILY AFFAIR

HANNAH WINEGARDNER JUDGES SENIOR SHOWMANSHIP WITH HER DAD BRAD.

B

BY HANNAH WINEGARDNER, OH

eing able to judge the Hoosier Beef Congress Senior showmanship with my Dad was a complete honor. Showmanship has always been highly important to my dad and I, so judging such a highly competitive group of juniors was an incredible opportunity not to mention a memory that we will have forever. I have been the showman on the other side of this story more times than I can count but I must admit that it was just as nerve-wracking to sort through these juniors. We saw so many talented young people go through that ring in the two days we were there. The state of Indiana should truly be proud of the talent they have raised! â–Ş Showmanship Champion Senior Showman

BARRY NOWATZKE, IN

Tracy’s passion for cattle sparked at a young age where he was active in 4-H showing cattle and grew up on a farm. Dave Jennison helped Tracy get started showing and clipping as a child. He later worked for Lavern Massman when Lavern was having sales. “Lavern gave me the opportunity to work for him. He showed me the ropes and taught me invaluable lessons for which I’ve always been thankful,” Tracy recalled. “Clipping was how I started out – I clipped a lot of sales all over the Midwest, including for Bob May, where I learned a lot.” Tracy also did a lot of clipping in Nebraska; where he became friends with Dave Stoltz. “I always hoped I would be able to clip half as well as he could!” Tracy spoke a lot about how much he admired and looked up to Davey. In 1996 and 1997, he and Barry Nowatzke hosted a sale together in Michigan City, Indiana. In 1998, Tracy decided to try to sell a few calves out of his home in Russell, Iowa, where he has had his annual fall sale ever since. ▪

FAVORITE PART OF WHAT HE DOES...

...being able to make a living doing what he loves to do. He loves going to shows with his daughter Macey and looks forward to when his son Cash is old enough to show.

BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT...

...the overall accomplishment is just being able to do it. He is thankful that Goretska Show Steers has had some success over the years.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS...

...Work hard. Take small steps – it doesn’t happen overnight. Don’t get discouraged.

FUTURE GOALS...

...to continue to sell the highest quality of cattle we can.

I have known Tracy for over 25 years. I have been associated with him on many different levels from competitor to co-worker to partner and mostly as a friend. From the first time I worked with Tracy, it was clear to me that he had such a passion that he will settle for nothing less than perfection. With that passion and unparalleled talent, he is nearly unmatched in the Show Steer Industry for his ability to find them, sell them, fit them, and make them win. There are few that have the ability to do those things on the level Tracy does, let alone do all those things on that level. The mark he has made on the Show steer Industry will be everlasting. There are a lot of young fitters and clippers that look up to Tracy and want to clip like him. Good luck with that! LOL! We all know Tracy is a great clipper. What everyone needs to know is that that is only a small reason why he is so successful. His work ethic is second to none. He always pays attention to the little things that some people take for granted. He conducts his business as a professional and has earned the respect from his peers and customers by doing so. He is the kind of positive role model we need in today’s society. ▪

WADE RODGERS, IA I’ve known Tracy since I was about the age of 15. He is someone that I have always looked up to. It was constantly my hope that I could someday be able to achieve the talents of presenting show cattle at the level of quality that he can. Tracy has a very good eye for cattle and an unmatched work ethic. He is a true example of how doing honest and truthful business will lead to success. I’m very fortunate to have been able to meet and role model myself after several great people in the show cattle industry at a young age. After all of the people I’ve had the pleasure of doing business with in my short time, he’s still at the top of the list!! ▪

STACEY KERSTEN

A NEBRASKA SHOW MOM SHARES HER STORY.

BY STACEY KERSTEN, NE

day in the life of a Show Mom!

D

ecember 14, 8:00 p.m. and the article requested of me is due tomorrow! Here I am on my drive home from getting a show heifer’s hooves trimmed as the showman is at home doing her homework in preparation for finals week! Oh yeah, and “Mom, when you get home, after supper, will you proof my essay for English?” Guess this is just another

So, how did I end up with this crazy lifestyle as a Show Mom? Kind of hard to trace back exactly as I grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in south central South Dakota on a farm with commercial cattle. I went to college on a volleyball and basketball scholarship. My ultimate goal was to become a certified athletic trainer and physical therapist. During my second year of physical therapy school, I met a fella at The Starlight Ballroom in Wahoo, NE! Now, doesn’t that sound like the type of place one should meet their future husband! I’m pretty sure the handshake that would seal the deal, so to say, is what my dad said when Kevin asked him if he would bless our engagement, “All sales are final, there are NO RETURNS!” That must have been it! Now after darn near 22 years of marriage, Kevin and I have 2 wonderful daughters, Stephanie age 16 and Korie age 6. Kevin grew up right where live and began his show career showing cattle and pigs. He was fortunate to have shown at the county

and state fair, as well as participated in Ak-Sar-Ben approximately 30 years ago. Now here we are instead of chasing kids with soccer balls, we are chasing kids and cattle! I wouldn’t trade it for the world! We, along with Kevin’s parents, Larry & Judy, are partners in Kersten Cattle Co. We live between Omaha & Lincoln, NE in what I call the foothills of Interstate 80! Our operation is a bit of everything. We started with primarily Maine Anjou cattle, and have added Simmentals to the mix. Plus we have a few club calves, a few bulls to keep the operation interesting and last but not least, a small herd of Miniature Herefords! These are Korie’s project, but what a confidence booster they have been! When asked if I considered myself a Show Mom, I wouldn’t say I feel as experienced as those before me. I admire them greatly and marvel at the organization, patience, and appearance of ease they make their positions appear! I feel I learn each time we go to a show and visit with them whether it be about my role as Show Mom, wife, or hired hand. I look to others for advice and guidance as I make decisions that will have a substantial impact on my family as we move forward within our

industry. It is with heartfelt gratitude that I say thank you to them for paving the way for rookies like myself! During my ongoing tenure as Show Mom, I have enjoyed building a closer bond with my daughters. We have had a few family discussions about how things should be done, but isn’t that how lessons are learned? I wouldn’t trade this opportunity to be able to work side by side with our kids. Kevin and I get to teach them many lessons they will never read about in a book; work ethic, responsibility, determination, dedication to a goal, sacrifice, financial well being, in general, the basic ups and downs of life through an experience in agriculture. As we look back on the memories we have made over

the years, we smile, and laugh about many! Korie’s spray bath with the garden hose at junior nationals or the potty break she decided to take in the make-up ring at the American Royal! Even so, we know as we move forward on our journey, we have many more experiences to share and lessons to learn. We are so blessed to have developed relationships with an extended show family that stretches from state to state with “Aunts”, “Uncles” & “Cousins” too numerous to name! We are excited about being able to spend time with each person as we know from personal experience, life can be cut way too short, way too soon! You never know what kind of impact you can or will have on another! We wish to extend our best wishes to each of you for a prosperous and blessed 2015! Hope to see you soon! ▪

HARLEY SARGENT A GIRL WHO IS HOOKED ON SHOWING CATTLE AND IS PART OF THE FUTURE OF THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY! BY HARLEY SARGENT

M

y name is Harley Sargent I am from Denison, Texas. Denison is a small town located just North of Dallas on the Texas Oklahoma line. I am the Daughter of Jeff and Kim Sargent and I attend Texoma Christian School in Sherman, Texas, where I am currently a sophomore. At my school we do not have FFA; therefore, I am a member of the Grayson County 4-H. I have been around cattle my entire life. I attended my first cattle show at the age of two weeks old and started showing cattle at the age of eight years old. The first stock show I participated in was a Saturday Jackpot in McKinney, Texas with my show heifer Harriet, who was named for the amount of hair she had. Harriet and I were fortunate enough to come out on top and win Champion ORB. That was all it took for me to get hooked and realize this was something I wanted

to pursue and take to another level. To this point some of my biggest accomplishments have been starting in 2009 with winning the Shorthorn Plus show in Louisville and the Fort Worth Open Show. Since then I have managed to have Champion Simmental Heifer at Fort Worth Junior Show and Champion Prospect Steer at Shorthorn Junior Nationals Five years in a row. The past year was the biggest year as a whole where I showed my favorite heifer LFL Candy Corn, raised by Bruce Lawrence of Anton, Texas. Candy and I were fortunate enough to win Champion Limousin Heifer at Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston as well as Supreme Champion at the Houston Livestock Show. A long the way I have been showing steers at some of the major shows in Texas and I have been very fortunate to put a few in the sale at Fort Worth. One of my goals yet to reach is to win a breed champion at a major steer show in Texas. Along with showing I enjoy playing Basketball, Volleyball and Softball at my High School, spending time with my grandparents and taking care of my two dogs and cat. I hope to attend Texas A & M University or Texas Tech University and major in AgriBusiness. I owe all of my success to the breeders who have helped me make wise decisions about my show calves and to my family for always being there and supporting me in everything I do from sports and academics to showing. I cannot honestly thank all of you enough I would not be the person I am today if it was not for each and every one of you. â–Ş

collegiate livestock judging

Hometown: San Luis Obispo, CA Judging Team: Oklahoma State University Achievement: High Individual 2014 NAILE Sr. Collegite Livestock Judging Contest Quote: “You can do anything you put your mind to. The only person limiting you from your own success is yourself.”

SHLEY JUD E California Girl Reigns Supreme in Louisville.

I

f you had one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted, would you take it or just let it slip?” I found this quote to be very suiting for how I felt going into judge at Louisville. More than anything, I feel completely humbled to have not only won the N.A.I.L.E., but more so blessed to have been given so many opportunities in my eight year judging career. My collegiate coaches, Clay Elliot and Blake Bloomberg, are not only amazing teachers but more importantly, talented and great individuals. Neither of them ever hesitated taking a chance on a young lady from California like myself. They molded me and pushed me to achieve all that I could and to never give up. The people who have influenced me the most however,

are easily my parents. My mom, Becky Judge, gave up many things to be my coach in high school. My family taught me the value of hard work, dedication and having a will to win that has carried through in every aspect of my life. Without these people supporting me, a win at N.A.I.L.E. would have never been possible. I encourage all those who judge or want to judge, either in high school or college, to one, have faith in your abilities and two, never give up. Especially young ladies and women involved in the livestock industry. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t evaluate animals, you can’t talk stock and you won’t ever judge a show. You can do anything you put your mind to. The only person limiting you from your own success is yourself.

THE FINAL JUDGEMENT

FROM A CONTEST OFFICIAL’S POINT-OF-VIEW

H

aving the opportunity to serve as an official for a national judging contest is quite the honor. Collegiate judging teams from across the country practice countless hours outside the classroom, all while trying to achieve their academic goals, in hopes that the official evaluation is a sound, correct one. Quite the task rides on your shoulders to ensure that each class is placed correctly, and makes sense from an industry and production perspective. Knowing that fellow industry professionals trust your judgement of the livestock you are asked to evaluate is a very rewarding, and full-circle accomplishment from a career standpoint.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE BUILT ON? THIS ISSUE, BRAD DISCUSSES WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO BUILD YOUR LIFE ON A ROCK. BY BRAD HENDERSON, CO

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. Luke 6: 46-49:2

Y

our life is so much like a building. It’s only as good as the foundation it’s built on.

Jesus starts the verses above with a tough question – basically, if you call me your Lord, why don’t you do the things I tell you to do? And he follows it up explaining that His teachings aren’t something to just give lip service to- His teachings are Truth and they will stand when the storms come. We’ve talked a lot about Jesus paying the price, in full, for your salvation and there’s nothing you can add to what He’s done for you. The debt for your sin is paid the instant you accept the sacrifice He made for you. His innocent blood covers all your sin. And now that you’ve been saved from the law that sin equals death there is something you can do… don’t stop at Christ being your Savior… make Him the Lord of your life.

Our culture is filled with traps and snares just waiting to wrap you up in chains and tie you down. And it’s filled with quick sand. If you don’t have a firm base, a rock that is infinite and unmovable, you will get blown wherever the wind wants to take you. And take it from this old guy; it takes a long time to clean up from bad decisions. No matter how good they seemed at the time. Some decisions are irreversible and you will carry those scars forever. But if you can stand firmly on His strong foundation and filter every decision through His teachings, you’ll still be standing when everything around you has been carried away. God doesn’t change and neither do His rules of right and wrong. Our culture is in a lot of trouble right now. From our public schools to our government “leaders” they have all cut the mooring lines to moral Truth and have decided they know what is right and wrong, just and unjust, good and evil. The Truth isn’t someone’s opinion and

isn’t open to interpretation. If it was, then it wouldn’t be the Truth. Murder, theft, lies, adultery are wrong and they will always be wrong. Just one example- The United States Supreme Court may rule, and the government may pass a law saying, some forms of murder are legal but the destruction to lives goes far beyond anything they could have imagined. What God says is wrong, will always be wrong, and the consequences for not following His teachings are dire, both as a society and as an individual. When the storms come, and they are coming, the only ones left standing will be those whose lives are tied off hard and fast to God’s unchanging Word. Jesus wants you to live an extraordinary life, and He’s given you the road map to not just live but soar. Don’t build your life on this world’s constantly shifting sands. Build your life on the eternal Rock that has always been and will always be. ▪

BIBLE VERSES Proverbs 28:1 “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.” Ecclesiastes 12:1314 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His

commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

The Official Buckle Company of The Showtimes Magazine

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A COMPANY THAT SUPPLIES QUALITY CUSTOM BUCKLES, PRODUCTS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE, THERE IS NO BETTER OPTION THAN TRES RIOS SILVER. BY LISA REID

W

hile there is always the excitement of holding the Champion banner at the end of a show, there is something truly special and rewarding about being awarded a custom made belt buckle. Tres Rios Silver has been a main staple in the buckle industry since it was founded by Vicki ChristensenO’Shieles in 1997. Vicki and her family’s passion for the rodeo and livestock industry is evident in the craftsmanship and quality of their work. Her expertise in buckle design and creation dates back to 1987; and her history in the rodeo and livestock industry stems from growing up in the rodeo circuit where her father, Robert Christensen, is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. While Vicki’s family has stayed involved in rodeo on a competition level - her son, Brett Tatum, was a professional bull rider for eight years. His wife, Keylie, was the 2008 WPRA World Champion Team Roper. And their son, Pecos, was the American Junior Rodeo Association AllAround Cowboy for the 8-and-

under division – Tres Rios Silver has allowed the family to form a permanent connection with the industry that they love. Although Vicki is still involved in the business, she is in the process of passing the torch onto Brett and Keylie. Tres Rios Silver not only specializes in custom belt buckles, but knives, rodeo crowns, pendants, tack and other accessories as well. Located in Llano, Texas, the company has eight employees, five of which who are full time designers. Every item they sell is built by hand by 45 silversmiths. While the size of buckles has not changed much in the 17 years since starting the business, Vicki and Tres Rios designers are constantly working to come up with fresh and new ideas. Their attention to detail and customer service is unmistakable in everything that has their stamp on it. Vicki emphasizes how they value truly getting to

know their customers. Throughout the years, many of the people who have come to Tres Rios as customers have left as friends. The Showtimes Magazine has used Tres Rios for all of their buckle needs over the years. From the Blackout Jackpot to AkSar-Ben and the Colorado State Fair Champion buckles, the end products received were truly show stopping. If you are looking for a company that supplies quality custom buckles, products and customer service, there is no better option than Tres Rios Silver. ▪
