GoldSTANDARD GCC
X615
The of Maternal
The longer we are around Gold Standard daughters the more value we place in them. Regardless of breed, he adds value, he adds maternal, he adds rib, substance, and style. He is one of the only bulls we know of that will change a cow in one generation. His dam has made donors, she has made herd bulls, and consistently produces great ones time and again. The great secret to our success is our Angus cow base. Gold Standard not just a calving ease bull, he’s a money making, proven producer.
Where Maternal Matters
Hold your calving ease bulls to a “Gold Standard.” Don’t just expect it, demand it. With a dose of style, and deep bred maternal, Gold Standard leaves you a generation to build a base on.

County O has made a stir this past year, he was the highlight of the Embry o’s On Snow in 2018. His initial live display in Denver never happened till thi s past year and it’s pretty easy to see why he had the bu zz going in the Yard’s. We all have those cows that need a little more foot size, power, bone, and overall style, this is the bull to add it! Calf reports have been aw esome with small to moderate bw , hairy, good looking.
Style, Correctness, and Balance throughout, with the masters stamp of approval. Jump on bo ard boy's, he's the real deal!

Blessed with the best... you are only as good as those you are surrounded with. And, we are surrounded by the best! We’re so proud of these junior exhibitors their hard work and commitment is second to none. Thank you to the parents for trusting us with your kids and their projects, it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. Thank you everyone who has shown interest in our program, we appreciate you. Thank you to the livestock show committees, junior breed associations and livestock judges - you certainly have an important and sometime thankless job but your dedication to the industry is extremely important to it’s continued success. Lastly, thank you to our talented team and our families - without you nothing is possible.

Our move to Show Cattle Connection this year was seamless. We enjoy the user interface, which allows sellers to input their own information for lots including pictures and video links. We can adjust sale order and be responsive to questions on our site with more control, especially during holiday seasons. Response time by the Show Cattle Connection team was awesome. Maddie is a great customer service representative and helped us have a professional sale! We are very happy with our experience using this new system and would recommend it to anyone.” —

who’s judging
ONE
What made you want to be a judge?
Like many young people, I grew up in and around the showring envying the “man with the microphone.” So many of them had an impact on my childhood and as my experiences through livestock judging expanded, I hoped to someday work with young people in that same fashion. TWO
How many shows have you judged?
To date, I’ve had the opportunity to judge over 600 shows in 43 states and Canada. THREE
What is your background in the livestock industry.
I grew up on a diversified farming operation in central Maryland where my family raised Hereford and Angus cattle and ran a small feedyard. My siblings and I were all heavily involved in 4-H programs, raising and showing all species. The Hereford breed has always been a passion and opened
many doors for my family to travel the country exhibiting cattle and learning from some of the greats in our breed. Personally, it also gave me some leadership opportunities as part of our national junior board while developing an incredible network of people that shared my cattle interest. Livestock judging was also a big part of my upbringing and sparked the interest to compete at a collegiate level. That experience, along with the chance to coach collegiate teams over the past 20+ years have shaped my personality and evaluation skills. FOUR
What does your ideal market steer look like?
One thing I love about those with the ability to breed and raise great livestock is that the bar continues to rise. What is “ideal” today may not be quite good enough even next year. However, the fundamentals with which I start my evaluation remain constant. Sound, muscular, appropriately finished market
CHRIS WILL BE JUDGING THE FORT WORTH STEER SHOW FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW IN 2020!
steers will always get the first look from me. From there, I love a goodlooking one, but not at the sacrifice of function and potential carcass value. I am not a judge that prescribes to a certain weight being ideal. Now more than ever, our industry accepts a wide range of end weights. A steer’s frame, muscle and maturity pattern determine its ideal terminal weight and that is different for every calf. I’m not a judge that needs a steer to be extreme in any one area. Bring me a complete one and you will be in the hunt.
together and often times failing together. As I get older, I realize how important those days were in creating the man and evaluator I am today. He remains an incredible resource for me today and talking cattle with him never gets old. EIGHT
What do you do on the mornings before you judge a major show?
Nothing special. Just try to get a little more sleep than my three kids at home would typically allow! NINE

Do you have a certain judging style or judging routine?

FIVE
What are you looking forward to the most at the Fort Worth Stock Show?
Honestly, coming back for a second time, I think my answer is different than if you’d asked me that same question last year. A year ago, I would have said I couldn’t wait to see the steers. Everyone has their opinion, but if anyone argues this isn’t amongst the greatest steer shows in the world than they don’t know great livestock! Again, I can’t wait to see those cattle. But after last year, I can’t explain what it’s like to watch those young people enter the ring. The minute they make eye contact, it’s as if I can see a year’s worth of work for that young person and their family riding on this one lap. You quickly realize how important your job is and the magnitude of this moment. I can’t wait to make that eye contact! SIX
What are your goals for the future? Be the best father, husband and
Christian I can, while continuing to recruit and educate young people that represent Kansas State University the way it deserves to be! SEVEN
What has made the biggest impact on you as a livestock evaluator?
I could write a book on this question. The role of my parents has been unbelievable. Not so much with direct evaluation skills, but more in helping me define goals, develop a competitive nature and find the conviction to always do what is right in the ring. Amongst the many great coaches I’ve had, Dr. Scott Schaake’s impact goes without saying. In the past 20 years, I also attribute my growth as an evaluator in large part to my judging teams. To be a relevant teacher, I have to continually expose myself to great breeders and livestock minds. Finally, I would have to say the biggest impact has been my brother Randy. We are two years apart and grew up working together, competing
Not really. I believe the venue should dictate the routine. Judging a show can be a very isolated feeling at times, unless you find ways to engage the exhibitors, ring help and spectators. How you do that varies from one show to another and is quite different at a county fair versus the Fort Worth Stock Show. Generally, I like to move quickly, but still give every animal and exhibitor a fair evaluation. On the mic, you will never hear a “canned” description. Every animal is different and I will do my best to describe those differences with real world, practical terminology that hopefully any onlooker can see and understand. TEN
This is why I judge...
It’s exhilarating, it’s challenging and it’s so much fun! Most importantly, I’m a people person, a livestock junkie and an educator. The showring allows me to blend the things I love most! • Thanks Chris for answering our ten questions for our readers! The Showtimes coverage of the 2020 Fort Worth Steer Show begins February 6th! We will have photos, updates, Live Videos and a new Show Center Video!

“I’m delicious ground meat made from potato, coconut, wheat and heme. I taste like beef, look like beef and can even sizzle but I have no cholesterol. I’m all burger baby.”
BY: TUCKER A. STEWART, KS
I almost committed a grave cattleman sin and ordered a veggie burger. Before I read the above quote on the back side of a table tent sitting at a bar and grill in Kansas City, I had no idea that the Impossible Burger wasn’t a burger at all. The front side had a big picture of what looked like a hamburger with a list of the fixings I like and had a small sticker that said “MADE FROM PLANTS.” I chuckled and thought; That’s clever
considering all beef is technically made from plants. Then, I flipped over the tent and discovered the horrifying reality that this “beef ” wasn’t beef at all. This was nothing but a highly processed product masquerading as meat, using shady marketing to trick unsuspecting consumers. After that experience, the lawyer in me was left with a question, What can a state do to protect consumers? The Supremacy Clause in the U.S. Constitution establishes federal law as the supreme law of the land and states are prohibited from interfering with the federal government’s exercise of its constitutional powers. A federal law will “preempt” a conflicting state law because of the Supremacy

Clause making the conflicting state law unconstitutional. In the food labeling world, the federal constitutional power at work is the Commerce Clause. The Commerce Clause gives the federal government authority to regulate goods in interstate commerce. It is important to note that there are two federal agencies that deal with food labeling. The Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) gives jurisdiction over meat labeling to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) gives jurisdiction over all other food labeling to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
There are major differences in both food safety requirements and labeling requirements between the two. USDA requires labels to be preapproved and has robust food safety inspections. FDA typically does not preapprove labels, enforcement is lackluster, and food safety inspections occur less frequently than for meat. Under FMIA, state labeling requirements of cell-cultured meat that are different than the USDA are likely unconstitutional because USDA has jurisdiction over lab-grown meat and there is specific language preempting states from requiring labeling that is different than the USDA. While
lab-grown meat is off the table, states have some wiggle room to provide clarity to consumers concerning plant products masquerading as “meat.” FDCA does include express preemption language, but that language is for only specific labeling components. Because the FDA has not created specific labeling requirements for the plant-based fake meat products, states have an opening until the FDA creates a standard. Even with preemption barring certain state activity, states can pass identical labeling standards. This is important, especially when you consider the lackluster enforcement by FDA of products mimicking dairy. If they pass such standards, states can then enforce federal standards when the federal government fails to do so. Outside of preemption, fake meat companies have sued Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi challenging their labeling restrictions on other grounds. Their argument is that those laws were passed with the intent to commercially harm the fake meat industry and those laws regulate the content of speech in violation of the first amendment. The first amendment right to free speech extends to businesses’ commercial speech, but not to the same level as individual speech. Think, statements on a food label is commercial speech and your protest sign is individual speech. It’s a very high bar for a state or
the federal government to restrict individual speech. On the other hand, states and the federal government have a greater ability to restrict commercial speech that is false, deceptive, or misleading. If the commercial speech is not false or misleading, then the government may only restrict the speech if it serves a substantial government interest, and the restriction is narrowly tailored to serve that interest.
As this topic progresses, cattlemen should advocate for legislation that is meaningful and aims to protect the unsuspecting consumer. •
Associate Counsel Kansas Livestock Association Tucker A. Stewart is associate counsel at the Kansas Livestock Association where he uses his cattleman’s background and legal education to assist KLA members with legal questions and advocate for the livestock industry at the state Capitol. Born and raised in Kansas, Stewart is the son of Gregg Stewart and grew up on the nationally known Mid Continent Farms, which was inducted into The Showtimes’ Hall of Fame in 2016. Being directly involved with farming and ranching gives him a unique producer perspective in the practice of law.
65 THE SHOWTIMES
Because of these potential constitutional issues, crafting the
At the federal level, NCBA and KLA worked closely together to craft language introduced in the House of Representatives and Senate with bipartisan support. The Real Marketing Edible Artificials Truthfully Act of 2019 was introduced by Dr. Roger Marshall in the House and Senator Deb Fischer in the Senate. The Real MEAT Act will be no easy lift, but NCBA and KLA will continue to drive support for it. The bill would codify the definition of beef for labeling purposes, require fake meats to be labeled as “imitation” products, protect consumers from deceptive marketing practices, and ensure that USDA has authority to enforce fake meat labels if the FDA fails to act.
Tucker A. Stewart
JAN/FEB 2020
The free speech challenge makes the reasons behind passing legislation important. States should not advocate for barring new technology from entering the marketplace. Personally, I am quite amazed at the technology that is going into food innovation in the 21st century. However, many new companies are mixing in false statements, misleading labeling, and anti-animal agriculture rhetoric to push their products. Because of these tactics, protecting the consumer is especially important. The consumer confusion on fake meat is supported by surveys done by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) showing that nearly one-third of consumers think the Impossible Burger and Beyond Beef contain meat and over half believe the products contain some form of animal products.
legislation for states is certainly hard, but not impossible. In Kansas, the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) is advancing legislation to protect consumers from the misleading labeling of fake meat products by requiring a conspicuous disclaimer that the product does not contain meat. Focusing on a disclaimer rather than an outright prohibition of certain terms should combat both the preemption and first amendment challenges.

The biggest change I’ve witnessed in the livestock industry is…
The prices and quality of show cattle and the amount of customer service that comes with selling show cattle.

Howe High School a good friend introduced me to Bill and Becky Rasor, WHR Shorthorns. Eventually in the year 2000 after helping at cattle shows and working the WHR Shorthorn annual heifer sale, I became full time show and sale cattle manager. Not only has this been an exciting opportunity for me to continue my passion of working with cattle, it has allowed me to meet and
help many good families across the United States and Canada. Through this job opportunity, other avenues opened for me; such as Judging various cattle shows and being able to watch my daughter grow up and have very competitive cattle showing career. The cattle industry has been a fulfilling opportunity for me, and I could not imagine doing anything different. •

Leaning on the Lord.
When I was growing up, I was constantly told to toughen up. I might’ve been pushing
a big calf down the chute, riding a green broke horse, or halter breaking a yearling bull, but in all cases, being weak wasn’t an option. I had to stay strong.
BY: JENNIFER BRUNS, TX
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken. Evil will slay the wicked; the foes of the righteous will be condemned. The LORD will rescue his servants; no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
Fortunately, I made it through my childhood with no broken bones, and I’m thankful I was taught to stay strong as a kid, but there are times in life that it’s okay to be weak. True strength can sometimes mean being strong enough to admit you’re weak. The children’s song “Jesus Loves Me” sums it up well, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong.” We are all His children and His strength will carry us through anything. •

Psalms 34:17-22 reads:
If you haven’t been facing any hardships, moving into the new year, I would encourage you to seek out those that are having a rough time. For someone that’s struggling, the smallest kind gesture in someone else’s day can make all the difference in the world. Hebrews 3:13 teaches us “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
JAN/FEB 2020
As we wrap up Christmas and bring on the new year, the list of people I know that have recently lost a loved one is long. The list of people I care about that have recently been diagnosed with cancer is also long. For these people, my heart aches that Christmas time makes their circumstances even tougher than normal. Christmas has a way of magnifying whatever the situation is that we have going on in our lives. It’s ok to hurt and it’s ok to grieve. Even though our society tells us we should be joyful, December can be the longest month of the year. The world tells us to be strong but being weak and leaning on the Lord is ok.
If you’re one of those people that’s hurting, turning to the Lord is the only place to find comfort. If you don’t know what that looks like, talk to a Christian friend or a pastor that can help you find the way. The most important thing is not to keep it bottled up inside, or to turn to things of the world that might help dull the pain temporarily, but really only hurt worse in the end. Hiding from your hurt won’t help it heal. God gives you hope when nothing else will.

ittsfield FFA may have been voted the Best FFA Chapter in America; however, The Showtimes crew won the ultimate prize. December 10th, my family and I left a 2:00 AM to make the trek East to visit a school that rallied over 50,000 total votes in our highly publicized contest this past Fall. As a part of their prize for the Best FFA Chapter title, we were going to spend the day speaking to the Pittsfield FFA Chapter as well as the school’s marketing class about ourselves and our business. What we didn’t expect, was the overwhelming welcome we received as we pulled into this town located just east of the Mississippi River. We could see the creativity and feel the excitement for Agriculture as soon as we arrived. The Chapter, led by their advisor Jody Heavner, greeted us “We Are Champions” playing, a rolled out green carpet, a chicken, cow, FFA men and a three man security team. After being welcomed to Pittsfield by the school principal and other FFA members, we made our way to the FFA room where we were treated to lunch and settled in for the day’s adventure. •

We were gifted with a custom Showtimes spirit stick!

The Chapter received a Showtimes congratulates banner as well a T-shirts for all of its 137 members!
Showtimes Hall of Fame member, Cindy CagwinJohnston met us in Pittsfield. She captured the day with her camera as well as contributed to the conversation, visiting with the Chapter. She added such a special flare to the day!
After meeting with the Chapter, the entire school gathered for an assembly to highlight Pittsfield FFA, the voted on Best FFA Chapter in America!

My name is and I am currently a junior in high school from Elmwood, IL. My steer Stew was just selected as the Grand Champion Steer at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Though I feel beyond fortunate to have been given this opportunity, I am particularly humbled by the fact that this was my second big win in Louisville. I could spend time talking about the moments that it took to get to that point, but honestly, I would prefer to focus on those that managed to get me where I am today. Those people that stood in the background. The ones who cheered from afar. The people who never got near the recognition that they deserved. My family. My friends. To each and every person who worked their tails off to make this win happen — thank you. As the years and show opportunities pass by I would like to take this opportunity to remind exhibitors to be ultra thankful for what they have. The opportunities are endless. Work hard and hold tight to those that you love. •

Hi my name is , I am 17 years old and a junior in high school. My parents are John and Dede Sullivan and I have a 10 year old sister named Sage. I recently exhibited Supreme Champion Heifer at NAILE in Louisville. I have been showing cattle since I was about 6 years old and have loved every second of it. Louisville is easily my favorite show of the year. I love the competitiveness of the show and the memories I have made there. Even though she had an attitude, my Percentage Simmental heifer was very special and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to show and work on her. Winning both at Junior Nationals and Louisville with her this year was a dream come true and I will never forget it. None of this could be done without the support system I
have behind me. I am so grateful for the whole Sullivan Farms crew, they are truly the best of the best and I can’t thank them enough for their support and hard work. I’d also like to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to continue my passion of showing cattle. They are my biggest fans and supporters. I’d especially like to thank my dad for all that he does for me and giving me all the opportunities he can. He’s my biggest inspiration and the hardest worker I know. I am extremely grateful for everyone who has got me where I am. In my opinion nothing compares to this industry. It has taught me so much and the lessons I have learned I will carry with me forever. I plan to stay active in this industry and continue to educate others on its importance and relevance however I can so I can give back what it has given to me. •

ennie and I might be some of the most passionate people about this industry. No, we’re not a milliondollar operation nor do we have 1,000 head of cows on 10,000 acres, but nearly everything we do revolves around show cattle.
JAN/FEB 2020
We love this industry and God has blessed us with show cattle as a way to provide for our family, serve others and do it all as a family. When it comes to our girls, my dad once said, “are you raising cows or raising kids?” In our lives,

the cows are helping raise our kids! My parents invested the time and money for me to be involved in this business and God has blessed me with the ability. I feel it’s an obligation for me to use what’s given to me to serve others. I’m beyond blessed to have a wife and two girls to pursue this passion with. The back of trailer and business cards have Proverbs 3 :5-6 on it. We strive to live by this.
“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING, IN ALL YOUR WAYS SUBMIT TO HIM AND HE WILL MAKE YOUR PATHS STRAIGHT.” PROVERBS 3:5-6
Jason’s Background
-Spent most of my childhood on the family farm in NW Kansas where we had a commercial cattle operation and wheat farm. -We lost my dad in a tragic auto accident involving a late spring snowstorm when I was 10 years old. -My Mom, brother (Justin) and I continued to operate our farm four years after dad passed away before relocating to NW Oklahoma. -Parents - Linda and Russell Miller and the late Rodney Schlepp. -Involved in 4-H, Rodeo and sports. -Graduated Oklahoma State in 2000. -Taught 5th-6th grade for 6 years before returning to our place to pursue our passion together of raising our girls & starting ECS.
Family
- Married in 2003. - Daughter Pepper 13 years old. - Daughter Tylee 9 years old.
Involvement in Industry / ECS
-Everything is done as a family with only part time help. Truth is, Jennie runs EVERYTHING at home since I’m
Special People and Events
-I could never name just a few people. I was raised in the show barns and have looked up to countless people and continue to learn from many of them. -Jennie and the girls have probably shaped me as much as anyone. Jen keeps me focused and positive, and the girls keep me driving for more. -Events... Countless shows. Being in the barns is home to me. We know more people at a show than we do in our home town. -NWSS, I think I’ve been there every year of my life.

on the road so much. This year 180 nights away from home. -Raise, show and sell show heifers and bulls. -Own and operate (ECS) a custom fitting and marketing service for purebred cattle. We take cattle in to prepare them for shows, sales and promotion. -Raise cattle for our Fall and Spring Sales. -Show our own cattle on the state and national level. -Both daughters show. -Judge numerous shows. -Work as a member of The Cattle Prostaff for Weaver Livestock. -Conduct approximately 25 show cattle clinics a year for groups all over the country. -Working for Weaver was never in the plans for ECS, but it fits us so PERFECTLY.
JAN/FEB 2020
-Grew up on our family farm in Wiley Co where we raised and showed dominantly Simmental cattle and raised Alfalfa. -Parents - Ben & Jo Elmore, brother Elgin. -Very involved in 4-H, FFA and sports. -Attended Connors State College and was a member of the National Champion Jr College Livestock Judging Team. -Graduated Oklahoma State in 2001. -Managed a purebred Angus ranch for 6 years . -Started Elmore Cattle Services in 2006.
-Winning our 1st National show (being Denver). It almost created an addiction, a drive and a passion to do it again and again! -Watching our girls succeed in something they also love.
Goals & Why
JAN/FEB 2020
-We’re doing what we love and love what we do. We do it because we love it, we live and breath this business. Our goal is to continue with what we feel God has led us to do, use show cattle to raise our family and serve others. We hope it helps shape and mold our girls for what the future holds for them!

Whole Bovine Colostrum
The only active ingredient in LubriSyn LVS is hyaluronan! Hyaluronan (HA) is naturally found in their body as part of synovial fluid, the viscous substance that cushions and lubricates their joints. Synovial fluid allows two adjacent cartilage caps to glide upon one another with minimal friction.
is nature’s solution to total animal health. Our colostrum is sourced from Grade A dairies and sterilized in its whole state. It is never heat processed or broken down to degrade valuable constituents. When used as a supplement, Re-Borne supports muscle health, weight gain, intestinal health, and greater endurance in horses, livestock, and pets.

If you have the opportunity, make sure to make reservations to enjoy tea with the Grand Champion Market Steer from the National Western! Lisa had the opportunity to bring her steer along with Ky Stierwalt’s Grand Champion back in 2009. This is a one of a kind event that you should be sure to attend if you have never been before. You can even have your picture taken with the champion steer. THE DENVER ZOO The Denver Zoo is an 80 acre facility located in City Park that was founded in 1896. With thousands of animals and exhibits, it is fun for the entire family. NATIONAL WESTERN RODEO AND PBR The National Western Stock Show’s rodeo is one of the best in the country! LASAGNA JAN/FEB 2020
BY: LAURIE REID, SHOWTIMES
230
• 1 1/2 lbs. Ground Beef • 1 Onion, finely chopped • 28oz. can Diced Tomatoes • 6oz. can Tomato Paste • 16oz. Cottage Cheese, Small Curd • 8-10oz. Mozzarella Cheese, Shredded • 16oz. Box Lasagna Noodles • Salt/Pepper to Taste DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet, brown ground beef, onions and salt/pepper to taste. Add diced tomatoes and tomato paste. Simmer while you cook pasta. When pasta is almost done, add cottage cheese to meat sauce. Once pasta is al dente (follow box instructions) remove from heat but keep noodles in pasta water while you assemble lasagna. In a large casserole dish start with a spoonful of sauce on the bottom so noodles do not stick. Next add one layer of lasagna noodles. Salt noodle layer. Add layer of meat sauce. Repeat until you are out of ingredients. Top lasagna with shredded mozzarella cheese. Bake in oven until cheese is melted. Cut lasagna into desired portion sizes, serve and enjoy!

THE BIG THINGS IN LIFE
...livestock judging not only builds long lasting friendships, and instills imperative life skills, but ultimately has a unique way of bettering people.
HAYNES TOPS THE CHARTS IN LOUISVILLE
MATTIE LYNN
Following graduation in May 2020, I plan to attend Oklahoma State University, as an agriculture-business major with an option in pre-law. Being a cowboy, and attending a university of such agricultural prestige has always been a dream. After all, the Lord did say he would lead us by “still-waterâ€?. If plans go accordingly, I aspire to attend law school and pursue a career that advocates for the industry that built me. When I opened that steno for my first practice and struggled through a set of Market Lambs, I could not have imagined what was in store. I am a firm believer that the big things in life are the seemingly mundane things, and that could not be more applicable here. It is astonishing to me how livestock judging not only builds long lasting friendships, and instills imperative life skills, but ultimately has a unique way of bettering people. Words cannot express how gracious I am to have parents who provide unwavering support throughout all of my endeavors, and to serve a God who always prevails and love unconditionally. To say I am humbled thus far would be a drastic understatement! •
237 THE SHOWTIMES
When the time came to decide where to attend college, it is safe to say that God had a place for me at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Oklahoma. Though my parents loved the idea of me being close to home, and I thought I was only going to college for academics and livestock judging. I quickly realized NEO would mean so much more! I found an agriculture department where I am surrounded by people that support and encourage me to pursue my aspirations, and above all feels like home. I also met eleven teammates from across the country who have become some of dearest friends. I cannot imagine sharing trials, triumphs,
and riding in the van with any other group of people.
JAN/FEB 2020
vividly remember my first livestock judging practice. As a nervous eight-year-old girl, I tried to place a class of market lambs, and then did my best to give the set. I grew up in the northeast corner of Oklahoma in a small town named Jay, where roots of agricultural, family, and faith run deep. I was blessed to be raised here, by extremely supportive parents, and a tight knit family that truly cultivated me to who I am today. Just as most kids in agriculture, I was fortunate enough to be heavily involved in 4H, FFA, and exhibit sheep, hogs, and goats.

BY: JOHN RAYFIELD, TX
y involvement with the junior livestock industry started at the age of nine with my first show steer. Growing up in rural, central Alabama, the opportunities to show cattle where limited. My brother Fred and I showed steers at our county, district, and state livestock shows throughout our 4-H and FFA careers. We knew there were regional and national shows, but we never showed cattle outside of the state of Alabama. We knew very little about raising or showing cattle. Our family had a small herd of commercial cows and as we got more experience in show ring, we started to expand our cow herd and started raising and selling
show cattle. As is the case with most families, being the younger sibling, I benefited from showing longer and expanding my showing career into the heifer barn. I had some success showing Angus and Chi heifers which made me want to explore the breeding side of the cattle industry. This fueled my desire to continue showing cattle at all levels, but also gave me the drive to pursue livestock judging as more than just a 4-H activity.
the three years I worked as an extension agent, I took three teams to national competitions. All three teams placed in the top ten and the most notable team was the 1993 Georgia 4-H team that placed 5th at the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. I loved every minute I worked in Extension, but there was little room for advancement or a more competitive salary. I was asked to apply for an ag teaching position at Worth County Middle School in Sylvester, GA in the summer of 1996. After the contest I I was certified to teach was approached by from my undergraduate several collegiate degree, but I was hesitant coaches asking me to give up the freedom where I was going to I had as an extension judge in college. I had For the next six years, enrolled at Auburn I taught ag at Worth University and had County Middle School promised Tim Osborn and loved every minute that I would judge for of it! We had a very him. I never wavered in successful FFA chapter that decision and had and livestock showing a successful collegiate program. We fed 30-40 livestock judging career head of cattle per year, at Auburn. 80-100 market hogs, and 20 -25 market lambs. After graduating from During that time frame, Auburn, I took a position we had 4 state champion as a county extension livestock judging teams, agent in Georgia. I still state champion market had livestock judging lamb, two reserve fever from college but champions at the state now I was a coach instead market hog show, and of a competitor. had 3 members on it. He asked if I would join the team and judge in the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. Without a doubt, that phone call changed my path forever! We practiced most of the fall leading up to the contest in Louisville. I had no idea if we could be competitive or not. I thought we were good, but Smokey would remind us all the time, the Texans and Okies
will destroy us when we get to Louisville. He had the most effective way to ground us all, I just wasn’t smart enough to understand his tactics as a coach. When the dust settled at the 1990 National 4-H Contest, Alabama was high team in oral reasons, 8th high team overall and I was 4th high individual in the entire contest. I believe our team is still the highest placing team from the state of Alabama at the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest.
JAN/FEB 2020
The opportunities afforded to the Rayfield boys growing up can all be attributed to our parents Fred and Bonnie Rayfield who pushed us to excel in everything we did. Our parents insisted that we become involved in 4-H and FFA activities. 4-H was an outlet for my brother and me to compete and network with youth who had common interests and goals. We were both state 4-H project winners in public speaking and both served on the state 4-H Council. These experiences led us to pursue degrees in agricultural education at Auburn University. A pivotal moment for me was the summer
before I entered Auburn University in the fall of 1990. I received a phone call from Smokey Spears who was the County Extension Agent in Lee County, AL (county that Auburn University is in). Smokey was and still is a legend in training 4-H livestock judging teams in Alabama. His team had won the state 4-H Livestock Judging Contest that summer, which I had participated in, but his team only

With great kids, supportive parents, and a teacher who believed in the kids, the program achieved more than many thought was possible from a program that had four ag teachers in four years prior to my hiring at the school.

Not only did my time at Worth County Middle School bring me a sense of great accomplishment, it also brought me my best friend, my closest confidant and my biggest fan, my wife Kelly Young Rayfield! We were married in the fall of 2001. Little did she or I know of the adventures we had ahead of us. She has been by my side through thick and thin. We have moved from Georgia to Lubbock, TX, Lubbock to Raleigh, NC, Raleigh to College Station, TX and College Station back to Lubbock. It has been a heck of a ride and I thank God every day that she has been with me every step of the way. In 2002, I had the opportunity to move up to the high school ranks and teach at Lee County High School in Leesburg,
GA from 2002-2004. It was chance to build a program from ground up and while those two years didn’t garner the awards and accolades that my previous experiences did, I became a much stronger classroom teacher and program manager which were skills that served me well for the next phase of my career. In 2004, I was offered an assistantship to pursue my doctoral degree at Texas Tech University. Dr. Steve Fraze was my major professor and was also the superintendent of the National FFA Livestock Judging Contest. My dissertation research was on factors leading to success at the National FFA Livestock Judging Contest. Dr. Fraze was also responsible for getting me to join the National FFA Livestock Judging committee where I served as associate superintendent for eight years and as superintendent for three years. 2004 was a year of great change in the Rayfield household. I started my doctoral program, Kelly and I moved half way across the country, and our oldest daughter Karley was born. Being a poor graduate student, one of the only ways to make extra income was
to judge shows. I judged every county show and jackpot that I could to make ends meet. I started getting calls to judge more prestigious shows like the Fall Classic, the scramble heifer show at Houston and the Belt Buckle Bonanza. The time we spent in Lubbock while was working on my doctorate was pivotal in my judging career. After completing my doctorate in 2006, my first faculty role was at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. I worked with many amazing people at NC State and began shaping my career as a teacher educator. After three years in Raleigh, Texas A&M had an opening and Kelly and I really wanted to get back to Texas, especially if the girls were going to show livestock. Kendall, our youngest daughter was born right after we moved to College Station. We spent seven years in College Station and I had the opportunity to work with many great people. Dr. Chris Skaggs continues to be one of my best friends and mentors in the business. I had many amazing students like Clay Zwilling, Brant Poe, Jake Franke, and Joseph Rathmann to name a few. Texas A&M made me a much better faculty member and
I’m thankful for the experience I had there. In 2016, Dr. Steve Fraze who was my major professor at Texas Tech was now the department chair of the agricultural education and communications department. He informed me that he had an opening in agricultural education and that I should apply. The rest is history, we moved back to Lubbock in 2016 and I became the program coordinator for agricultural education. Lubbock is an awesome community and a great place to raise a family. Moving to Lubbock provided us the opportunity to expand our cattle showing enterprise which is how we as a family invest most of our spare time. Karley, our oldest daughter showed her first steer in 2013. We fed only one animal that year and had many obstacles to overcome. Karley showed “Leroy” extensively throughout the summer and fall. We took him to Ft. Worth only to make the lap her first time at Ft. Worth. It was a blessing in disguise, Leroy was reserve champion Polled Hereford steer at Houston. I can’t remember being more excited at any time in my
life showing livestock! Karley is now a freshman in high school and she has hung a banner from every major livestock show it Texas. Anyone who knows me knows that I love to judge shows, but it pails in comparison to showing cattle with my girls.
I would like to thank the Showtimes Magazine for asking me to write an article. I am humbled to be featured by the premier outlet for showcasing junior livestock projects in the U.S. It doesn’t get any better than this! •
285 THE SHOWTIMES
I have been extremely blessed personally and professionally in my life. I get to do what I love doing every day, train future ag teachers. I get to raise my girls in a region of the U.S. where production agriculture is valued and treasured. We get to show cattle at the Texas majors which is an opportunity that many would jump at given the chance. I have been able to serve as superintendent of both the National FFA and National 4-H Livestock Judging Contests. I have judged shows at every level. If I never judge another show,

Kendall starting showing last year and had a great first year. We have five head in the show barn and are excited for this cycle of the Texas majors. Unfortunately, both of my girls have my competitive spirit. We don’t always win, but we want to be caught trying to win at every show we go to.
I’m thankful for the opportunities to share my opinion with so many great people in our industry. In 2013, I judged the heifers at the Oklahoma Youth Expo with Jack Ward, who I believe is one of the great cattle evaluators of our time. In my closing remarks that afternoon I said “It doesn’t get any better than this!” That is how I will conclude this article. To any young exhibitors reading this article, if you show livestock, thank your parents for the opportunity they are giving you. Never underestimate the power of the relationships or network you form while showing or judging livestock. Always be willing to help others, regardless of their status. You never know how that will come back to you!

BIGGER, BETTER, BEST JAN/FEB 2020
KICKING OFF THE BEST DECADE YET!
THE SHOWTIMES
292
here’s more to life than just having a passion. How you utilize your skills and love for something to influence those that share that same interest is was really defines you. The past decade has enabled my family and I to fine tune skills in marketing and design to best promote the livestock industry. If all we had was a passion for this lifestyle, every show would bring with it just another trip around the show ring; every issue just another set of ads and results. Instead, we have dedicated our life to utilizing our expertise to make each day, show and issue better than the one before. The Showtimes has become a platform for those in Agriculture. This is just the beginning. In 2020, we have big plans to go bigger and better than ever before! More Shows. More Coverage. More Photos. More Internships. Kicking things off in
Denver and Fort Worth, we don’t plan on slowing down. As The Showtimes 2020 Tour kicks into gear, I leave you with this wish for the year to come... “Count your blessings instead of your crosses. Count your gains instead of your losses. Count your joys instead of your woes. Count your friends instead of your foes. Count your smiles instead of your tears. Count your courage instead of your fears. Count your full times instead of your lean. Count your kind deeds instead of your mean. Count your health instead of your wealth. Love your neighbor as much as yourself.”
Let’s rock this decade! •
